Tom MacDonald's roaring good stories, fueled by marvelous characters, hits the gas on page one and never lets up. These book assures MacDonald a place in the top tier of New England suspense writers."Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times bestselling author of Through the Evil Days.
From the Author Have you always wanted to be an author?Being an author wasn't even a thought for me. In 1999 I went back to school for an MBA at Boston College, and while I was there I accidentally discovered writing. I learned an important lesson in the MBA program: I had neither the aptitude nor the interest to do well in business. But I also learned I had a talent for writing, and I went after it. After I graduated from BC, I was accepted into the MFA creative writing program at the Stonecoast Writing Seminars at the University of Southern Maine. The moment I got there I knew I was in my element. I have come full circle. I am now teaching creative writing at Boston College in the evening. What about the genre appeals the most to the writer in you?The pureness of the protagonist is what appeals to me. It's an American archetype, a hero beyond corruption. This doesn't mean the hero is perfect or moral or ethical in all areas of his life, but that he is a man of his word. He can't be bought off. Money isn't his yardstick. This type of hero focuses on the means, not the ends. It is how he accomplishes things, not what he accomplishes. His quest is personal, a test of character, and it's the test he obsesses on until it's done. The case is merely a prop, an obstacle he must overcome. These stories are highly individualistic, one man against the system. I think readers live vicariously through the hero - I always did.

The artwork at the beginning of each chapter was a nice addition; I enjoyed it.Tom has worked hard to develop his writing skills and I believe he is now one of the best in the thriller department. I couldn’t find a sour note anywhere in the book. He held my attention from start to finish. I read it very slowly because I didn’t want it to end.Tom MacDonald is hitting it out of the park with his Dermot Sparhawk series. I eagerly await the next installment.

By Amazon Customer This is the third book of Tom McDonald's that I have written. I find the this to be his best. His use of language has risen to another level. The style keeps me up at night reading when I should be getting some shut eye as I follow the twists and turns. The characters are great and I enjoy how he continues to weave and build upon the first two books and their great characters. The description of the city is the best. I grew up in the streets of Boston and Tom describes them with a great sense of familiarity. He has a gift and look forward to his next book.

I loved the first book, liked the second, and this third totally blew me out of the water. To have Dermot presented in the first person - the ONLY character so presented - is a stroke of genius. Everybody else is vital, of course, but once I started reading in the first person, I thought, "Aha! it's my buddy, Sparhawk, yahoo-oo!" The author's attention to the minutest detail is remarkable. Every facial twitch, bodily shift, brow furrow, to clumsily name a few, helps each character come to life on a deeply personal level, so that it does not take long before we really and truly KNOW this or that guy. Furthermore, that Liam McGrew, on his last legs, is sitting in Belfast throughout the entire story, directing and manipulating his "people" like a master puppeteer, is another brilliant concept, played out perfectly by this amazing Tom MacDonald. The book is a wonderful page-turner. While I was reading, all house-keeping and meal-preparations were put on hold! Already I'm looking forward to Tom's fourth book.
