The Farmer's Wife – the story of how a woman retrieves an apple from a hole in the ground – is one of the many Sufi tales for children. For over a thousand years it has entertained young people who join in the chant of this cumulative tale and, at the same time, learn its valuable lessons about the nature of problem solving and discovery. For more than 30 years Idries Shah's collections of Teaching-Stories and narratives from the Sufi tradition have captivated the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. Shah selected the majority of these tales from oral sources. They are repeated in homes, courts and caravanserais throughout the Middle East and Central Asia.

The Farmer's Wife, by Idries Shah

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-While the folk art illustrations are boldly attractive, this cumulative tale falls short of the mark. While picking apples, a farmer's wife drops one down a hole in the ground. She asks a bird to get it for her, but the bird refuses. She asks a cat to jump at the bird so it will retrieve the fruit, but it refuses. She continues to seek help to no avail. Finally, she returns to the bird, who sets off the sequence of events readers have been waiting for. Oddly, though, it is the wind that finally blows the apple out of the hole. This story lacks the simple, effective rhythm of tales such as "The Old Woman and Her Pig." The striking pictures of golden hills, brilliant blue skies, and the woman's Middle Eastern dress are the highlight here.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA

Review "Enjoy ... new bright collections featuring different illustrators ... fine stories!" -- REVIEWER'S CHOICE, The Children's Bookwatch "Its pleasantly repetitive language makes it an ideal tool for developing reading readiness and beginning reading skills." -- Denise Nessel, Ph.D., National Urban Alliance for Effective Education "These stories ... help in the development of children's cognitive abilities." -- Robert Ornstein, Ph.D.

From the Publisher Beautifully illustrated in stunning color, this award-winning series of large-format children's books by Idries Shah presents tales from a rich tradition of storytelling. All books were well reviewed and one received a National Parenting Publications Honors Award.

For thousands of years all over the Middle East and Central Asia children have been entertained and taught by these stories and have continued to tell them in adult life. Until his death in 1996, Shah collected hundreds of such stories and adapted them to contemporary Western culture. His adult books continue to attract millions of readers from all over the world.

Sufi tradition affirms that there is a continuum of the children's story, the entertainment story, and the teaching story. A story can help young children deal with difficult situations and give them something to hold on to. Adults can at the same time understand it on a more spiritual level. Through repeated readings of this rich body of oral and written material both children and adults can now learn to develop the capacity to be more flexible, as well as get fresh insights into many things about themselves and about life.

By A Customer This is a new twist on the types of stories that kids love to read and hear over and over. It begins with a lady making a simple request...she just wants her apple. The chain of events that results though, teaches cause and effect in a fun way. What really makes the book a lasting treasure is the art work. We found ourselves going through the book both from front to back and back to front just exploring the colorful and playful art. I highly recommend this book for kids or even adults who like the playful prose and pictures. Two thumbs up for Mary Rose Santiago and Idries Shah. I look forward to seeing more of their works.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Blindness of the academics By Kristian L. Blom The editorial review laughably misses the rhythm and the deeper layers of this story. May I gently suggest that it was reviewed in haste? This book is a tour de force in higher order thinking, randomness and unforeseen outcomes.A story for children at first glance that is actually a blueprint.Children get this story. Why can not some adults even begin to scratch the surface of what is available here?Let your child decide! Buy this book for them, read it, ask questions as to what is occuring in the tale. Then watch and listen to your child. You may be surprised at the insights of your youngster!

Not just that if you keep at something you might persevere. But also that our ultimate success often comes by way something or someone outside ourselves - when we least expect it!

Somewhere over the rainbow...an adventure is waiting By Storywraps Lucy Stillwater-Smith is twelve years old and her best friend, Alyssa Jones, has moved away to America leaving her feeling so alone and sad. Her doctor parents work long hours, totally aborbed in their research, leaving her constantly with her nanny Abigail. She longs for adventure and some excitement in her life. Then one day she notices a package outside her front door and rushes out to claim it. Unfortunately it is not addressed to her but everything inside of her screams..."It's mine!"She quickly opens up the gift and low and behold she discovers a loom - not an ordinary loom - but a golden magic one. Delighted she follows the looms promptings which leads her to an old dusty bookcase and through a secret passageway into a world like non-other she had ever seen before. It is a magical, enchanted world with colourful creatures, castles and landscapes. Lucy finds herself needing the help of the loom as she encounters many challenges. Together they build a bridge, distract a giant beast, weave wings to fly and even rescue a girl imprisoned in a castle.Lucy uses her imagination and her looming skills to get her out of some very precarious situations in that bewitched world she finds herself in. The story emphasizes kindness and a giving spirit. The personalties of the charcters in the book are more developed. The story is action packed with alot of twists and turns. Like James Bond 007, Lucas gets in and out of alot of difficult situations. Lucas's secret weapon is his grappling hook. It is interesting to see how he uses it to get himself out of situations. The end of the book leaves the reader wanting to read more to see what happens. If you want an action book with twists and turns, this is a must read for you.

The story keeps twisting and turning so the suspense is maintained until last. Recommend it for reading. The writer could do a sequence two, it would be interesting for sure.

A lovely piece By Mitchelle While I read through the book and looked through the writer's eyes what she was trying to describe and the experience she was trying to convey to the reader, I felt a surge of excitement as I myself could not wait to go on my own trip and experience it too. I have traveled a number of times and have had beautiful experiences, but sometimes it ends too early because of low budget and the beautiful experience does not last so long.I have learned some really important tips about travelling. While this book was not written the way I expected it to have been written, I still ended up appreciating the pattern in which it was written and I love the idea; it felt somewhat relaxing

Some of the focus points are more self analysis prompts rather than instructions on what to do and what not to do. Anyone serious about living in an RV would have considered several of these points already. Nevertheless this is targeted at beginners, I just felt it wouldn't be so basic. It could prove useful to some people so for the price it's most likely worth taking a chance on.

There is a certain cultural affiliation with living on the road that appeals to many Americans and Australians. Whether it is the amount of open spaces upon which to travel in these countries or the wanderlust of spirit, but RV living in the United States and Australia have become exceedingly popular. The problem is that RVs are not inexpensive and while however appealing it is to consider a life on the open road, spending upwards of $80,000 is not an option for most. Van Dwelling and Living off the Grid, the latest book by Stacey Jaiden, hopes to access those feelings and provide an alternative that many not yet have considered: living in a large van.

The idea for this came from reading a book by Albert Bigelow Paine about those who lived in "vans" or covered wagons during the move west, says Jaiden. It sort of resonated with me the concept of living encapsulated in a small space and yet at the same time experiencing more freedom than one could possibly have in a large but stationary space.

Van Dwelling and Living off the Grid walks the listener through the various mechanics of choosing a vehicle, where to find one, how to pick the right one, and how to fit that van with all of the various things that someone will need to live comfortably between stops. It further describes how to find places to park for the night, as well as, how to deal with issues of hygiene while on the open road. Jaiden hopes the book will encourage people to follow their dreams of seeing the country and experiencing the freedom of the open road.

Everything it says is completely obvious and common sense, down to telling you that solar panels are devices that capture the sun's rays and turn it into electricity and that you could use solar panels or generators for power. You could get a lot more spending 5-10 minutes on blogs or google searches. The entire book could have been written by someone who has never tried vandwelling, just going down an outline and giving you the simplest basic advice that would be obvious to anyone spending five minutes to consider it.

And some suspicious unexpected happened could occur that's why i was so afraid to stay in vehicle. This book reduce me lots of suspicious thing to stay in vehicle. Really logical it's to know if i stay in vehicle in travel time so that i can save lots of money and vehicle parking cost etc. So it's convenient to stay in vehicle. But just need to be careful for something and this book teach me to about those thing. This is very good to read it.

Chong Living off the grid opens up my eye to a whole new world of living life debt free and filled with freedom to go anywhere. Stacey gives lots of useful tips on the item that we need to have when hitting the road such as food supplies, proper sanitation and hygiene products. Of course, living in a van does come with some downsides, you may need to find enough cash to support the traveling lifestyle, However, the author has given some very good tips on how to earn some part time money when you are on an RV roll.

I found the book to be an engrossing tale of triumph over adversity. As both a sailor and a pilot I could relate to much of Roberto's experiences, but even if I had been neither, it still would be a good read. There were times when I had trouble putting the book down because I wanted to find out what would happen next. Roberto's writing was descriptive and introspective... I really got the feeling of "being there". I would highly recommend it.

Roughing It In The Bush, by Susanna Moodie

About the Author Susanna Moodie (1803-1885) is the Canadian pioneer and critically acclaimed author of Roughing it in the Bush and Life in the Bush Versus the Clearings, frank portrayals of life as a settler in 19th century Canada. She was the younger sister of writers Agnes Strickland and Catharine Parr Traill, who also wrote about her experience as a Canadian settler in The Backwoods of Canada. Before immigrating to Canada Susanna Moodie was a successful author of such children s books as The Little Quaker and The Sailor Brother, and was an active abolitionist. Moodie s works continue to influence contemporary writers like Margaret Atwood, and her contribution to Canadian literature was commemorated on a Canadian postage stamp in 2003.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The early part of the winter of 1837, a year never to be forgotten in the annals of Canadian history, was very severe…. The morning of the seventh was so intensely cold that everything liquid froze in the house. The wood that had been drawn for the fire was green, and it ignited too slowly to satisfy the shivering impatience of women and children; I vented mine in audibly grumbling over the wretched fire, at which I in vain endeavoured to thaw frozen bread, and to dress crying children….After dressing, I found the air so keen that I could not venture out without some risk to my nose, and my husband kindly volunteered to go in my stead.I had hired a young Irish girl the day before. Her friends were only just located in our vicinity, and she had never seen a stove until she came to our house. After Moodie left, I suffered the fire to die away in the Franklin stove in the parlour, and went into the kitchen to prepare bread for the oven. The girl, who was a good-natured creature, had heard me complain bitterly of the cold, and the impossibility of getting the green wood to burn, and she thought that she would see if she could not make a good fire for me and the children, against my work was done. Without saying one word about her intention, she slipped out through a door that opened from the parlour into the garden, ran round to the wood-yard, filled her lap with cedar chips, and, not knowing the nature of the stove, filled it entirely with the light wood. Before I had the least idea of my danger I was aroused from the completion of my task by the crackling and roaring of a large fire, and a suffocating smell of burning soot. I looked up at the kitchen cooking-stove. All was right there. I knew I had left no fire in the parlour stove; but not being able to account for the smoke and smell of burning, I opened the door, and to my dismay found the stove red-hot, from the front plate to the topmost pipe that let out the smoke through the roof.My first impulse was to plunge a blanket, snatched from the servant’s bed, which stood in the kitchen, into cold water. This I thrust into the stove, and upon it I threw water, until all was cool below. I then ran up to the loft, and by exhausting all the water in the house, even to that contained in the boilers upon the fire, contrived to cool down the pipes which passed through the loft. I then sent the girl out of doors to look at the roof, which, as a very deep fall of snow had taken place the day before, I hoped would be completely covered, and safe from all danger of fire. She quickly returned, stamping and tearing her hair, and making a variety of uncouth outcries, from which I gathered that the roof was in flames.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Superlative By Sam Hill This story is from the 1830's onwards and its setting is the (then) British colony of Canada.Adopting various formats including that of a novel, a romance, a diary and a history, embroidered with poems, the book relates Moodie's experiences as an immigrant settled with her husband to a primitive and penniless pioneering life near present-day Peterborough, Ontario, in forests that were, at the time, remote and near-impenetrable. Moodie opens with a grim warning that a settler's life is extremely harsh; and a condemnation of the glib promoters urging Englishmen to emigrate and thereby accede to wealth and a life of ease, which in fact becomes nothing but a tragic pipe dream for the vast majority. The author is manifestly an intelligent, compassionate, sensitive and observant person with a marked talent for writing and poetry. Her education had most certainly not been of a common sort. Her character inspired Margaret Atwood's fine book of poems in our era, "The Journals of Susanna Moodie".It is no surprise, then, that Moodie's book was a best-seller in its day and is, even now, of enduring interest, especially to a Canadian. I liked most particularly her sympathetic vignettes of Canada's native peoples that she had encountered. "Nature's gentlemen", she called them, in contrast to the noisy bedraggled multitudes flooding the shores from Europe. The mind-numbing hardships and poverty endured by Canada's early pioneers, so vividly described by the author, are a phase of history one tends to gloss over in modern times. It needed a particular mindset, motivation, and formidable physical attributes to become a thriving hewer of wood, drawer of water and ultimately a farmer in the primeval wilderness. A great many of the immigrants just did not have that moxie, nor the benign helping hand of fortune (although there were others too, of course, who did have it in spades). Her remark in the early part of the book, which I copied (from an audio version) and reproduce here, made me understand so much better my own parents' feelings as immigrants to this same land, whom I had, as a callow youth, classified cavalierly as perpetual exiles: "My heart yearned intensely for my absent home. Home! The word had ceased to belong to my present. It was doomed to live forever in the past. For what immigrant ever regarded the country of his exile as his home? To the land that he has left that name belongs forever, and in no instance does he bestow it upon another. 'I have got a letter from home ...'; 'I have seen a friend from home...'; 'I dreamt last night that I was at home...'; are expressions of everyday occurrence to prove that the heart acknowledges no other home than the land of its birth". How aptly, how touchingly put!Moodie provides insights helpful to the understanding of other authors' works from that same era; for instance, those of Rudyard Kipling. We infer that British officers who retired early due to battlefield injuries received only half-pension, which made it virtually impossible for them to live decently back in England and often served as a powerful spur towards emigration. Having been schooled by the Empire to command and to be obeyed, they had little aptitude for _living _with_ those they had been raised to rule. Dr. Watson shared his Baker Street digs with the legendary Sherlock Holmes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous series for precisely that reason. On his invalid's pension, Capt (Ret.) Watson would have had a very tough time indeed of survival in London on his own, if he wished to continue rubbing elbows with those of his own class. Watson was a fictional personage, to be sure; but his case was typical.Such folks were easy marks for promoters urging them to "Go West". That is why the Moodie family emigrated to the colony of Canada, which destination, at that time, was the infatuation of the day. Military retirees on tight budgets such as he were in demand and they went in droves, even though unfit for the rough labouring life of a pioneer, credulously buying into yarns about castles in the sky. This led, far more often than not, to their ultimate sorrow.Regrettably, the Table of Contents, while well and truly provided, is not linked to the corresponding pages. This obviates the possibility of being able to browse through the book. Accordingly, I am obliged to give my review of this e-book edition only 4 stars, instead of the 5 (and plus!) that it merits. Nevertheless I still highly recommend this work.

This is a treasure By Fran Stewart This gem of a volume starts with cholera, and ends with a plea for families in the 1800s not to emigrate to the New World. Camping it most certainly isn't. We're talking life and death situations.I would have made a lousy pioneer; ROUGHING IT IN THE BUSH simply fortifies that knowledge. Susanna Moodie did not choose to move from England to Canada. Like so many women of her times, the choice was made by her husband, and she had no recourse but to follow him. Her staunch attitude that refused to be overcome by despair despite the very real hardships she had to endure, makes her, in my mind, a model of the kind of strength women have and often do not recognize until we are called upon to test it.

She writes in a natural, unaffected way, and documents her journey from England to Canada, where she and her husband started a farm and raised a family. She brings to life the hardships, the worries, and the day to day routines of these settlers, in now familiar places.

Sid Carter is an American CPA who receives a letter from a stranger in Nigeria offering him a generous percentage if Sid will only help him export his $60 million fortune out of Africa. Acting on a whim, Sid finds himself drawn into a world of intrigue that takes him to Paris, the Sahara desert, Switzerland and finally into the Islamic mosques of Cleveland. At the same time that Sid is helping the Nigerian retrieve his money, agents from Homeland Security are tracking a sinister cell of Islamic jihadists who are planning a major act of terror to mark the anniversary of September 11th. Agent Jasmine Bloom has become an expert on Arab terrorism ever since her husband and two children were brutally murdered by jihadists in their London home. She has traced the roots of the Moslem Brotherhood back to Hitler's Nazi party and the Arab divisions in the Waffen-SS and she is determined that their evil shall not be repeated. Following the interception of a truck carrying a nuclear bomb, high in the French Alps, the action moves swiftly towards its unexpected heart-wrenching conclusion in a luxury yacht moored in the placid waters of Monte Carlo harbor.

The writer is extremely adept at having the reader visualize what is happening. Someone should make this into a movie. The dialogue is snappy and smart. You can also relate to the characters and feel for them. The book also deals with terrorism in a rational and real way. I highly recommend it.

He wrote a great guide to Proust which we use in the class and we asked him if he'd published anything else. He mentioned that he had a couple of books that he was shopping around to publishers. We suggested he try publishing an ebook on KIndle and here it is!It's kind of a Dan Brown like thriller set in exotic locales around the world. Very timely as it involves Mideast terrorism and even the Muslim Brotherhood.Well written and obviously well researched. He manages to convey the flavor of the various international settings. My first e-book purchase, I read it in a day! Very entertaining!Well done Prof Alexander! Can't wait for the next one.

The book is well written with lots of action in exotic places that are described as if you were there. The dialogue is lively, there are plot twists and turns, drama, intrigue and a fascinating background on the Moslem Brotherhood. And a great ending.

An enthralling saga about one man's struggle to survive By Midwest Book Review A novel set during the beginning of the Jamestown Colony, Salute To Adventurers is an enthralling saga about one man's struggle to survive and even find love in a land beset by trade controls with England enforced by pirates, religious strife manifested through a fanatic who stirs Indian tribes to attack settlers, harsh environmental conditions, the unending chores of daily life, and much more. Painting a vivid picture of what it was once like to earn a living in untamed lands, Salute To Adventure is an exciting chronicle featuring conflicts of man vs. nature and man vs. man alike. Action, self-discovery, and the resolve to make the most of one's life distinguish this involving narrative.

Sherman John Buchan, a Scotsman, provides us with another good read, starting in Scotland and ending up in the New America, Jamestown. An adventure yarn with Indians, pirates, good guys and bad guys, and a lovely little romance all tossed in together. For a touch of American history including some Indian tales, try this book out. And check on Kindle, there are other John Buchan works available. Kindle is a good source for historical fiction.

Dolan I love the way John Buchan begins many of his stories with an interesting experience that appears unrelated to the larger story, but isn't at all. He helps you really understand the "character" of the actors. This one could have easily had a sequel!

Author Deborah Hodge has spent more than forty years on the west coast, frequently visiting the Pacific Rim region, and she knows it intimately. From A to Z she describes in vivid language the rainforest, ocean and beach, and a great variety of animals that a child might see walking along the shore — from tiny sea jellies to inquisitive sandpipers to leaping orcas. Illustrator Karen Reczuch brings her remarkable talent to the book, and has created image after image that is simply breathtaking. The text and art have been carefully checked for scientific accuracy. The book also includes a note about the Pacific West Coast and suggestions for exploring the region and further reading.
