Good, but use with caution and good maps By Henry Troup Since I haven't travelled all of the routes in this book, I can only rate it by the parts near me. I live (and cycle) near Ottawa. Mr. Katz's recommended route is just fine, but mis-described. He refers to Hope Side Road as regional road 49, which is Eagleson, March, and Almonte Roads, but not Hope Side Road. This description occurs twice in two different routes. The other obvious point is that this edition was published in 1994; amalgamation of municipalities and downloading of provincial roads with lots of changes of numbers makes a current local map even more necessary. And an older map might be handy for understanding some of the routes.

As such, I made heavy use of the "Across Province" routes, with some minor alterations. For the most part, this is a very good guide. Some of the routes are quite beautiful (particularly the section between Hawkesbury and Montreal) and nearly always have very little car traffic on them.I also cycled part of the Ottawa to Kingston section, and be prepared for the fact that the "new" highway 416 interrupts a couple of the roads in the route -- you should research the ways around the highway for any sections that used to cross what is marked as highway 16.There were are also some "quirks" not mentioned -- like how the Marie Victorin outside of Montreal inexplicably changes to a 4 lane highway with "No Bicycles" signed at one point. Since there appeared to be no obvious way around, I had to cycle on it. This turned out to be not as bad as one would think, but still an unexpected surprise -- and definitely something that should have been mentioned.Overall, I would recommend this book. It would also be very useful to motocyclists or even drivers who area interested in taking "the back ways" between points, rather than the well-travelled (and infinitely boring) main highways. In fact, I was hoping to buy an updated copy. It's a shame that there is no newer version available!

The gods think, therefore we are. The gods are mortal. The gods are starving. The Mexica-Aztec, The People of the Sun, lived under a terrible burden. Their role in the cosmos was to nurture the gods through human sacrifice. If they failed in their task, the gods would perish and the world would be laid to waste. You can deal with terrorists who are bargaining for money or political leverage. How do you reason with people who kill because they believe they are saving the world? Set in the recent past, the story opens with Colonel Crane extracting archaeologist, Ted Young, from a failed investigation of what seemed to be a small-time Mexican money laundering operation. As they flee Mexico, it becomes clear that Ted has stumbled into something much bigger. And it's radioactive.

If you are all about internal conflict and lengthy backstories, this is not for you. If you are about big explosions and high body counts... again, probably not your thing. And despite the sub-title, don't expect much in the way of supernatural elements. The basic plot at the heart of this is GREAT. A lot of the details in here are also just magnificent. Unlike most things I read, I'm pretty sure I am smarter for having read it. Extra points for the quote fro Virgil at the end. But the book is a bit lacking in polish also.Good:Interesting, novel concept. SUPERB details. Likable characters.Bad:Too much exposition. Some of the technology is a bit dated. The (academic) narrator knows more about military hardware than he has any reason to.Still very much worth a read, in my opinion.

After editing my book my sister wrote: “I love this book and feel you caught the deep beauty that seeps into you as you hike through nature.” That is exactly what I was trying to convey. I really do love the backpacking experience – with all its highs and lows. On the front cover of this book you will see a weary, grimy, very thirsty hiker with parched lips. The Continental Divide Trail was beating me up and I was hurting. Badly! Within minutes of taking the picture I saw a windmill with its blades spinning in the breeze. When I reached the windmill I drank two quarts right on the spot. The fresh-out-of-the-ground water tasted wonderful. I attempted to thru-hike the Continental Divide Trail in 2014 and hiked all of New Mexico plus the Great Divide Basin from South Pass City, Wyoming to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The snow depth in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado was beyond my ability and ended my hike. I don’t remember feeling overly disappointed. It had been a very enjoyable fifty-five day adventure that left me with great memories. What a fun way to spend my retirement! Come with me as we dodge creosote bushes, cactus, thorny plants, and prairie dog holes on our way through the dry, rocky, sandy, prickly, New Mexico desert. We'll not see another thru-hiker on the Trail for twenty-three straight days – and enjoy the experience. Before falling asleep we'll listen to the mournful cry of a coyote or the piercing call of an elk while gazing up into a dazzling display of stars. We'll cross the Gila River over 200 times, climb canyon walls steep enough that we won’t want to look down, savor chocolate cream pie in Pie Town, New Mexico, meet kind, generous Nita Larronde and stay at her famous Toaster House, hike through gorgeous sandstone canyons, feel the thirst that develops in ninety degree heat after two straight water sources are dry, slosh through lush green spruce lined meadows in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, visit hiker friendly Ghost Ranch and feast on their all-you-can-eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, watch wild horses gallop through thick sage in the vast, isolated Great Divide Basin, fight to stay upright while encased in a huge dust devil, posthole through thick snow before Bridger Peak, and experience a white knuckle ride down the mountain to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. These are just a few of the things that made this hike special to me that I'd like to share with you. After thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and hiking 980 miles of the Continental Divide Trail I have gained experience that has improved my hiking efficiency even as I have gotten older and slower. Through trial and error I have learned what works and doesn’t work for me. When I find something that works, I stick with it. I am eagerly looking forward to thru-hiking the Continental Divide Trail in 2016. The route I have chosen will be 2,850 miles. That’s a long way. I need to use my experience to maximize my enjoyment, minimize the wear and tear on my body, and successfully complete the hike. At the end of the book I tell about some of the things that work for me and how I plan to use them to successfully thru-hike the Continental Divide Trail.

His descriptions of the food he ate at each town made me hungry and now I want to visit the resturants he visited. (Not sure if Jim Hill likes hiking or Mexican food best.)This sentence from chapter two sums it up best: "I felt lucky to be hiking the CDT while it was still untamed."The author's unlimited positivity made this book a joy to read.

I enjoyed the accounts of Hill’s AT and PCT hikes By Al Stone This book, about a hundred pages long, is an account of Jim Hill’s abbreviated Continental Divide Trail hike. The hike is 980 miles (some on the road around snow-packed mountains) or about one-third of the trail. The trek then is discontinued because of the improbability of reaching Canada by season’s end. I enjoyed the accounts of Hill’s AT and PCT hikes. This volume, however, is not so interesting. Most of it is mundane (guidebook type) information relating the day’s hike and the evening’s camp with some personal notes. A part of the narrative is about searching for water and staying in town; however, this is also less than enthralling. Maybe Jim’s 2016 CDT journey (and book?) will be better

The Scarlet Letter: Golden Illustrated Classics (Comes with a Free Audiobook), by Nathaniel Hawthorne

From School Library Journal Grade 9-Up Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel of Puritanism giving rise to twisted gender politics, hypocrisy, and strength of character in the face of public scorn is well realized in this reading by Annie Wauters. She gives individual tone and rhythm to each of the main characters, while keeping the passages of narrative relatively uninflected. While this suits the author's own sometimes dry writing, it means that listeners must get to the second hour before the story truly gets underway. Since this lengthy forepart fits almost entirely onto the first disk, and each chapter is clearly marked as to track number on the packaging, it is possible to simply skip ahead rather than give up what becomes a delightfully lively listening experience once the romance gets going. Because the reading adheres so entirely to the print in spirit as well as in word, this is an excellent choice for students who cannot access print or who would like to accomplish college prep reading while undertaking other activities. Sturdy packaging makes this a shelf ready purchase.Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

    Review

“Anyone interested in how novels refract history will be enriched by the Broadview edition of The Scarlet Letter. The valuable introduction and extensive archival material will give readers a great foundation for using Hawthorne’s historicist methodology as a model for discussing the complexities of history and storytelling not only for Hawthorne but for contemporary readers as well.” ― Lauren Berlant, University of Chicago

“John Stephen Martin’s meticulously prepared edition of The Scarlet Letter offers both students and general readers the most comprehensive introduction to Hawthorne’s life and work currently available in one volume. With its historical contextualization, enormously helpful annotations, and judicious assessment of Hawthorne’s greatest work, it establishes itself as the single best guide to this great American masterpiece.” ― Joel Porte, Cornell University

“This edition is the most effective teaching tool for Hawthorne’s text that I know. Contained within a single volume, students have everything that is necessary for a rich understanding of one of the most important moments in American literary history. Especially donative are the substantial contextualizations provided here―literary, social, and historical―and in turn, these contextualizations ground the principal issues with which Hawthorne’s romance engages. Supplementary to all this is the extensive bibliography, far-ranging and comprehensive. This edition is easily the most comprehensive introduction to the work that is currently available.” ― Ian Bell, Keele University

(Lauren Berlant )"John Stephen Martin's meticulously prepared edition of The Scarlet Letter offers both students and general readers the most comprehensive introduction to Hawthorne's life and work currently available in one volume. With its historical contextualization, enormously helpful annotations, and judicious assessment of Hawthorne's greatest work, it establishes itself as the single best guide to this great American masterpiece." (Joel Porte )"This edition is the most effective teaching tool for Hawthorne's text that I know. Contained within a single volume, students have everything that is necessary for a rich understanding of one of the most important moments in American literary history. Especially donative are the substantial contextualizations provided here—literary, social, and historical—and in turn, these contextualizations ground the principal issues with which Hawthorne's romance engages. Supplementary to all this is the extensive bibliography, far-ranging and comprehensive. This edition is easily the most comprehensive introduction to the work that is currently available." (Ian Bell )

Gates There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, really, nor is it about religion in any technical sense. The only comparison that really fits is that of love story, or love triangle, or maybe love square. (I told you it is complicated.) In all of literature, there are very few writers who have penned characters so incredibly real and well-rounded. When you finish the novel, you KNOW these people. Certainly there is some minor societal commentary, but the real story here is about these people. Now, I'm assuming that many people looking at this page have been told they must read this book for high school English. As a former teacher of said subject, I have some pointers.(1) Make sure you read the book for yourself. Chances are (in our current educational system) your teacher is going to have a flat interpretation of this book, likely gleaned from some ready-made teaching packet. (If you have another kind of teacher, consider yourself lucky.) You can have some very interesting class discussions if you actually read the material and challenge some of the majority opinions about the novel. Be a rebel. Have some fun in English.(2) Read *The Custom House* introduction, but wait until after you've finished the book. It's only good in that it explains Hawthorne's view of his own book (difficult and painful) and reveals his struggle to write it. The writing style, however, is decidedly un-Hawthorne and more difficult to read than the rest of the book. If you read it first, you will be unfairly biased against the novel.(3)Read it SLOWLY, if at all possible. The storyline is complex and should be read with care. I would also recommend underlining and taking notes, if your copy of the book allows it. You will develop a truly deep appreciation of the work.(4) Finally, avoid the Demi Moore 1995 adaptation AT ALL COSTS. Words cannot describe how awful it is. And if your hope is to find something to help you on the test, the only real similarities are the character's names and the red patch on Hester's dress. If you must see a film version, find the PBS miniseries with John Heard and Meg Foster (made in the 1970s). It does the best job that a film possibly could with this material.

It was one of the first books I downloaded when I got my kindle 2. The character portrayals are superb. It analyses the thoughts, motivations, strengths and weaknesses of the four major characters in the story - Hester Prynn, the vengeful doctor, the hapless minister and Hester's vivacious and elf-like daughter Pearl. The description of the little girl and how she copes with being ostracized with her mother by a rigid puritanical society, is especially moving. While there are some descriptions of nature that are quite vivid, most of the text goes into developing these four characters and is a fascinating psychological study, though at times it's little slow.Overall, a well-crafted story and a good read. The book though is hard to navigate on the kindle because it has no active table of contents. I therefore would not purchase this version at regular price. Luckily, it's free!

However, unlike many reviewers here, I have a much different view of the story. As some people have said before, Hawthorne's book takes a good deal of concentration, effort, and strength to understand. Not only to understand, but to finish. The story can drag sometimes, it is true, and Hawthorne's style of writing occasionally leaves something to be desired (I don't think I've ever seen that many commas, 15 letter words, or page long paragraphs before), but we simply must look past these minor issues. Overall, the plot is highly creative and intense, despite the writing.\Ok, ok, I agree that the first chapter, "The Custom-House", was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad and boring that I drifted off to sleep several times while reading it! The first chapter has little relevancy with the story, so, unless you have to, I would suggest skipping that part of the text. The rest is exceptionally good, and the quality of the plot cannot be overlooked. My advice is to just lay off the first chapter; that way you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the book without difficulty. The story itself deals with sin and adultery, a subject that isn't very popular right now. Hawthorne does an excellent job of telling us about this, but he leaves the reader with many questions floating around in his mind at the conclusion. At the end of the story you're not 100% sure if Hawthorne was condemning the Puritan society, or if he was commending it. He leaves that for the reader to figure out, which is a thing authors seldom do. That's a major reason I believe this work is so unique and timeless. The story involves a women named Hester Prynne, living in the New World in the late 17th century. She has committed adultery with someone unknown, and, since the Puritan society considered the Bible to be their ultimate source of law, the punishment was quite severe for such an act. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her attire at all times, as a sign to everyone that she has sinned deeply. And so she must carry out the rest of her life this way. That's the major gist of the plot, although there's much more. I won't give it anyway, though, you'll have to read the book to find out.Let's face it: at some time or another we all are going to probably have to read this book, voluntarily or involuntarily. Shouldn't we try to make the best of it? Read it for its enjoyment, anything else would be missing the point.
