She couldn't wait to get the next book when she was finished with one... Which thrilled me... Because she isn't one to just sit and read unless she really loves the book.. An attack on a Japanese warship brings Japan and China to the brink of war. Meanwhile top Covert-One operative Colonel Jon Smith is sent on a mission to recover mysterious material from the wreckage of the Fukushima nuclear reactor.

When Smith fails to return, CIA agent Randi Russell heads off on an unsanctioned mission to find him. She quickly discovers that the missing samples may be evidence that Japan, led by hawkish military chief of staff Masao Takahashi, has been secretly developing next-generation weapons systems in preparation for a conflict with China.

If the Covert-One team can't prevent General Takahashi from provoking a war, the entire world will be dragged into a battle certain to kill tens of millions of people and leave much of the planet uninhabitable for centuries.

Despite the appearance of the name "Jason Bourne" in the cover's largest font, this isn't a Jason Bourne novel. If you don't develop unfulfilled expectations based on the publisher's questionable marketing tactics, you'll find a reasonably entertaining Covert One novel written by Kyle Mills, one of the more reliable authors in the Ludlum factory. The premise is refreshing, in that it turns away from tired stories about Middle Eastern terrorists and focuses on a potential war between China and Japan which, if initiated by China, might require the United States to honor treaty obligations by coming to Japan's defense. The title doesn't have much to do with the story but the word "Patriot" apparently sells books so there it is.The story begins with a mad scientist's "What have I done?" moment in Japan. The Patriot Attack then turns to the present as Jon Smith dodges bullets and crossbow bolts to recover a package. The package leads to evidence that someone in Japan is about to unleash a weapon that risks the destruction of all life on the planet. As one of the characters notes, it's the sort of doomsday weapon that should never be developed, much less unleashed. The novel takes a sophisticated view of China's internal problems and the dilemma that the United States would face if China and Japan were at war. America is economically dependent on China, both as a manufacturer of consumer goods for American vendors and as a lender that holds a huge amount of American debt. America also has strong economic ties with Japan, not to mention a defense treaty. China arguably has an incentive to attack Japan as a means of winning the support of an increasingly restless population, although China has little incentive to take on the American military or to lose the income it receives from American businesses. On the other hand, Japan would be trounced if it started a war with China ... unless, of course, it had a convenient doomsday weapon and a madman who was willing to launch it.Series regular Randi Russell is given a prominent role while Fred Klein is relegated to infrequent appearances (which is fine since he's the kind of wooden character who speaks without moving his lips). The story is fanciful but it is told in a credible way that builds excitement. The ending is easier and more abrupt than Ludlum himself would have delivered, but as a factory-based novel, this one isn't bad. And, to its credit, the Ludlum factory doesn't outsource labor to China.

By Sharon Teeslink Robert Ludlum would never have written a novel like this with so little action and so much time spent with so many people doing little. OK some of that is necessary to produce the plot, but this was excessive. Very disappointed. Jon Smith is a good character but this book did not the extent of his capabilities. So far no one has come close to Ludlum's talents of action, plot development and character appeal. He was the master of intrigue and action!

Though Not Ludlum Quality, a Good Introduction to the Next Generation of Suspense, Action-Adventure Espionage Thrillers By Bill Anderson Length: 528 pages.I bought this book for two primary reasons. I loved Robert Ludlum's many varied novels and characters. The first novel I listened to, on cassette tape, was back during the late 1980's, I think. Possibly even before that. Point is, Ludlum was good at suspense and intrigue, plus excelled at developing characters.Which brings us to The Patriot Attack, ostensibly a Jason Bourne novel. Be forewarned, this is not a Bourne continuation. Not even remotely a Bourne novel. Strike one.Another reason I purchased this book was due to my pleasure from a just-released novel concerning Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp. Terrific stand alone that, I surmised, if Kyle Mills could replicate Rapp so well, yet produce a terrific stand alone sequel such as The Survivor, well, maybe I had better read the latest installment of Covert One. What Mills did so well with Rapp, he, uh, fell far short of the mark with The Patriot Attack. Why?The premise, Japan and China, is a brilliant stroke. What hurt was the initial setting of our heroine, Randi Russell, in Egypt pursuing American-born, Charles Hashem, who is of Iranian descent, At first take, this seemed plausible. Well, except that he is a Muslim named Charles, of Iranian descent, not Arab, set in Egypt.Despite its implausibility, for me, having lived in Egypt some 15 years and in Libya for another two, plus having spent time in Israel, Palestine and in the Gulf the setting of an Persian in Arabian Egypt was not well executed. But, then, I excused that as just an obligatory initial, get-the-feel sort of transition point to get us set to depart from, to go to the Orient. And, since I spent a good deal of time in nuclear energy (as a welding inspector) I found it a great idea to base this novel on the aftermath of Japan's quake and tsunami. Brilliant stroke, thought I.That premise was smart. Remains so. And, the novel actually is well-written so long as one forgets about Jason Bourne and Robert Ludlum and an Iranian terrorist in Egypt.A bigger mistake, it seems to me, is that Kyle Mills ended it with a stunning twist that may, or may not be, a cliffhanger. It seems to have been written with an eye to a sequel, but not necessarily so. Sort of a teaser ending reminding me of the lady and the tiger...Having ranted about what I did not enjoy, or at least, what I had to meander through at a snail's pace, my wriggling was actually well worth the effort, as will be seen by the balance of this review.Randi Russell is an interesting heroine that, I am sure, may become sort of a female Mitch Rapp, if there are actually more Covert One or Jason Bourne novels forthcoming. Perhaps Mills will sedgeway Rapp into a joint venture with Russell and, thereby, put a nail in the coffin, so to speak, in the Ludlum franchise. And, let's be honest here, Ludlum has been gone so long that it is time to create a fresh legacy in the line, rather than merely milk the legacy for a few dollars more.Except that The Patriot Attack is a bit fluffier than the story line justifies, and aside from the above noted strikes, this tome is not a strike out. Nor is it a home run. It is something in between these to points. It is worth reading and, I am sure, in time I will buy the audible.com version and enjoy listening to it.By all means, I do recommend reading this good novel. Bear in mind, though, it is clearly not Ludlum. Nor does it measure up to Ludlum's best work. If you do keep that in mind, I am betting you will find great pleasure in reading Robert Ludlum's The Patriot Attack.Note: I originally rated this at five stars. After a couple hours thinking it over, I raised the rating to five stars. Why? I think I was a bit too hard on Mills. In part, because Ludlum set such a high standard and, in part, because I was so delighted with his work with Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp that I thought he had done as well replicating one of my other favorite characters, Jason Bourne. In other words, I wasn't fairly grading Mills's writing of this book.

By Steph Laymon Once in awhile you come across one of those books that make you question your reading preferences, and this is one such book. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, but Future Winds by Kevin Laymon took me easily out of my comfort zone. This book is so much more than it's intended genre, although one hell of a science fiction ride it is. It is also a deeply written plot that makes the reader pause to think, question, ponder, and in the end walk away with something lasting. Planets don't just come to an end by themselves, and conquering a new planet doesn't just come along with no moral dilemma. The world building in combination with an original and well written story lends itself to the magic of taking unimaginable time, place, setting, and characters and molding them into something believable and easy to relate to. Yes, I fully related to the feelings of not only humans in this story, but aliens as well. The story is never predictable. I am telling you now, any damn thing can happen to any damn-body. Isn't that awesome? As for the end...yeah. I was happy with the full conclusion and the way that there are a couple of interesting side stories that aren't sewn up so tightly that there is no room for reader imagination and the hope for a sequel.Favorite Character: Kio-Kai, a native to plant Flare. His perspective makes me question some of the things that we do as a species.Favorite Supporting Character: Aries, Tyler's bot. She is pretty enlightened. You have to love a robot who takes all that programming and puts it in some sort of useful order.Bravest Character: Aisha, one of the first to land on Flare. If you love a badastic heroine, you are going to be all about her.

By Deva Long Good old school military sci-fi story about a space invasion gone wrong. If you like Starship Troopers and Old Man's War, you will like this one, as enhanced special forces fight vicious regenerating alien bugs. The characters are strong and well written, the action is plentiful and fast, and the story twists and turns like a sandworm, completing to a surpirse ending. One thing different about this book is the alien characters are as well defined as the human ones, and you'll fnd yourself caring what happens to a 7 foot praying-mantis thing and even the acid spewing maggots get in some good lines. There are some grusome scenes not for the faint of heart.Enjoyable read and I highly recomend!

By Amazon Customer Review also on Dannimae.comNormally, I’ll start writing a review immediately after I finish a book. I’ll brainstorm the points I want to make, and my overall thoughts. But with Future Winds.. after finishing I felt nothing but shock. Let me tell you, this book has one hell of an ending. Like Girl with all the Gifts style, but better. I wasn’t at all expecting what was going to happen, and it was like a cherry on a piece of sci-fi-pie. (Is that cheesy? It’s totally cheesy. I’m leaving it in there anyway.)As for the rest of the book, I was enamored. The characters alone had me hooked. Not only are they all incredibly diverse- from personality to ethnicity- they are all so unique. This was a multi-viewpoint book, and normally with those you have your “main character” and everything else is just flavor text. Not with Future Winds. Each character was so well written with their dynamics and their separate conflicts that Laymon could have written a story about any one of their perspectives, and it would still be interesting. My favorite character was Aries, an artificial intelligence drone. I loved the line between human and robot presented by this book, especially during one particular part that I’m not going to spoil, but that scene alone made me want a sequel. But to piece all of the viewpoints together gave so many perfect views of a world that is corrupt to the core, and seeing this from all these different eyes and angles creates a world that is completely three-dimensional.And that’s another thing! The world! It was so well written that I feel like I could easily draw every aspect of it. Everything was meticulously described, so it’s easy to imagine the kind of strange world the characters are entering, but it’s not detailed to the point of tediousness *cough* Ayn Rand *cough*. Nothing important was left to the imagination, and I think that maybe that’s why, days after reading it, I’m still constantly picturing this world and the characters in it. (Not that it’s at all a pleasant picture.)It is dark. There are a lot of gorey, nasty moments, but what’s really dark about the book is the overall tone. Laymon, through his novel, makes a commentary on government power, big corporations, and the darkness of the human nature. Reading it, I felt constantly trapped and anxious, and there were parts that made me gasp out loud even though no one else was in the room with me. (If anyone else has read this, message me. I need to talk about what happened to Lucas with somebody.)But it wasn’t all perfect! Things I didn’t like:Good God it’s not for children! Which isn’t really a flaw.. I just wasn’t prepared for the amount of gore I was getting myself into.I’m wishing the Overlords were elaborated on. Maybe there will be a sequel? *Crossing fingers*Everybody swears! Even, like, the stone-cold officials, which seemed out of place. But I think this was supposed to be a way of showing the unraveling of society.Future Winds just leaves so much to think about, particularly with the symbolism presented by the Overlords in the book, I definitely want a sequel! I feel like there was one chapter in the book that could have been an entire novel in and of itself, and I’d love to see the author elaborating on the world he’s created. This is a book for people that like to delve into the deeper meaning of things, that want to have an intellectual conversation about symbolism and secrets. If it didn’t have so much blood and cussing I’d recommend it for an English class. But if you’re not into that, it’s good at surface value, too.Overall, I loved Future Winds. It was brilliant in its realistic characters, inventive scenery, and underlying message. This debut shows an author with so much potential, and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

Fox has brought the phrase "stranger in a strange land" to life in Love and Vodka! Fox's tales of social/language barriers and culture shock are relatable to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider is some way. Additionally, Fox pours out his heart in stirring ways as he describes his adventures in the pursuit of love. Readers can expect to keep the pages turning, because Fox has managed to make his experiences so relatable to any individual who has ever been head over heels in love. After reading this book, I felt like I had a whole new understanding of the idea that the truth is stranger than fiction.

The brain undergoes similar changes, from the rational into the irrational, and the resulting pheromone chemical soup tastes like insanity.Dearborn-native (Michigan) and author R.J. Fox would probably not debate any of that. It took all of twenty minutes for him to fall in love with a foreign exchange student he spotted in a line for an amusement park ride. When she returned to her native Ukraine, he followed her, engagement ring in his pocket. And more madness ensued. In his memoir, Love and Vodka: My Surreal Adventures in Ukraine (Fish Out of Water Books, October 2015), Fox recounts that initial meeting with Katya and the trip he took to Ukraine a year later to bring her back to the States again—as his wife. His adventures on foreign soil as he works up the nerve toward a marriage proposal and earn the blessing of Katya’s family are both outrageous and hilarious.Babushka-wearing old women curse him, snarl and chase him, threaten to splatter him with bleach. Well-meaning hosts force vodka on him in toast after toast that he finds he cannot deny, resulting in drunken stupors, cold outdoor showers, and barefoot walks across sharp-edged rocks in his underwear. And so the story unfolds as Fox learns about a culture and a world far different than his own. Within its traditions and people, he finds himself in comical situations, but he also learns lessons about himself, love, and home. What has remained with him from that mad and maddening journey these many years later, Fox says, “is the immersive experience of being in a whole other world than the one I know. Out in general public, people had a distrust toward me because I was not from Ukraine. This was in 2001, so not too far removed from the Soviet years when Ukraine was the center of missile-building during the Cold War. The distrust—it was the closest to feeling discriminated against that I’d ever known in my lifetime.”In inner circles of what would increasingly become family, however, Fox found warmth, love, and family connection, not unlike what one would find in any family anywhere, and all liberally christened with yet more vodka. Although the resulting marriage would last only eight years—Fox is now remarried and has two children—he holds his memories of his Ukraine adventure close to his heart. The memoir is the first publication of a new Ann Arbor-based publisher, Fish Out of Water, run by Jon and Laurie Wilson.

If you like reading, especially non-fiction By Amazon Customer If you like reading, especially non-fiction, go out and pick up a copy of "Love and Vodka."It's a crazy whirlwind of a memoir written by R.J. "Foxy" Fox about how he met not just his wife, but the woman of his dreams. Before reading this, I thought I was a "hopeless romantic" (emphasis on hopeless?) But the love this man has after the "chance" (fateful) meeting he has one day at an amusement park is nothing short of extraordinary, only to be out done by what he does AFTER meeting her.If you've ever wanted to become more cultured in the world, but don't really want to leave the states (...kinda like me) this is GREAT book that explores and teaches a small, but crucial part of another culture! Not to mention getting to laugh as "Bobby" embarrasses himself countless times trying to learn a new things.Foxy was my high school teacher for a few classes and after reading this, I see him in a new, incredible light about what he's willing to do for love and passion (and yes, for the record, he talks just like he writes). Not too long, but more importantly, a great read from a great teacher and a better person.

From the Inside Flap Lieutenant Obergatz had fled in terror from the seeking vengeance of Tarzan of the Apes. And with him, by force, he had taken Tarzan's beloved mate, Jane. Now the ape-man was following the faint spoor of their flight, into a region no man had ever penetrated. The trail led across seemingly impassable marshes into Pal-ul-don -- a savage land where primitive Waz-don and Ho-don fought fiercely, wielding knives with their long, prehensile tails -- and where mighty triceratops still survived from the dim dawn of time . . . And far behind, relentlessly pursuing, came Korak the Killer.

From the Back Cover Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination.

Tarzan the Terrible, first published in 1921, is considered by devotees one of the best of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. Here, Tarzan sets off to rescue his beloved Jane, kidnapped by Lieutenant Obergatz, but the journey takes him across lands untamed and uncharted, inhabited by primitive tribes and archaic creatures from the depths of time.

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Tarzan tracks Jane to the strange land of Pal-ul-don By Lawrance Bernabo The original novel "Tarzan of the Apes" is clearly the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novel and the one you have to read if you read only one ERB pulp fiction adventure, but all things considered "Tarzan the Terrible" is a better example of what would be the typical Burroughs yarn. The eighth book in the Tarzan series, "Tarzan the Terrible" continues the adventure begun in "Tarzan the Untamed" when the Lord of the Jungle discovered the burnt corpse of his wife, Jane after German soldiers visit his African home. ERB never really did like Jane all that much (he though La of Opar would have been a better mate) and killed her off. However, he had no more success in keeping her dead than Arthur Conan Doyle did with killing off Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan learns that Jane was not murdered by the Germans but kidnapped and sets off in pursuit. Originally published as a seven-part serial in "Argosy All-Story Weekly" in February-March, 1921, "Tarzan the Terrible" continues his private war against the German invaders.Tarzan has spent two months tracking his mate to Pal-ul-don ("Land of Men"), a hidden valley in Zaire, when he finds a land of strange animals (dinosaurs) and a pair of strange humanoids with tails that he befriends. Ta-den, is a hairless, white skinned, Ho-don warrior, while O-mat is a hairy, black skinned, Waz-don, chief of the tribe of Kor-ul-ja. Of course, in this new world Tarzan becomes a captive but impresses his captors so well that they name him Tarzan-Jad-Guru ("Tarzan the Terrible") because of his skills and accomplishments. Meanwhile, a second visitor comes to Pal-ul-don, wearing only a loin cloth and carrying an Enfield rifle along with a long knife, bow and arrows (think about it). However, it is indeed in Pal-ul-don where Jane is now being held captive, a pawn in a religious power struggle that consumes the rest of the novel as Tarzan tries to rescue her and set things to right in the strange kingdom he has discovered."Tarzan the Terrible" has all of the elements you expect from your standard Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. The hero pursues his beloved and has to go through an extended series of fights and escapes to rescue her. Jane does exhibit a bit more spunk this time around (she captures, cleans, and eats a rabbit), so there is an effort to make her more worthy of her jungle mate than before. The religious and social customs of Pal-ul-don are worked out a bit more than we have seen previously in the Tarzan series, which would become more dependent on Tarzan discover more "lost cities" in the interior of darkest Africa with the descendants of Roman legionnaires, crusaders, or whatever. "Tarzan the Terrible" is almost as good as "Tarzan the Untamed," and in many ways represents the end of the glory days of Tarzan. You are only one-third of the way through the series at this point, but after this one the stories get a bit redundant and repetitive as ERB milks his romantic adventure formula for all its worth.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. excellent till the end By Jay This book is clearly more experimental for Burroughs in that there are traps the Ape-man can't escape from. Also, the depth of the Ho-don and Waz-don civilizations in Pal-ul-don is well fleshed out and because of this is somewhat reminiscent of the way Burroughs constructed his Martian countries. Too, Korak's last appearance as a major character in a Tarzan novel is well placed if too short. The ultimate failing of the book lies in something Burroughs did all too frequently with his characters be they Tarzan, John Carter, or David Innes: Tarzan doesn't get to exact personal revenge on the men who kidnaped and tried to rape his wife. Had Burroughs not chickened out at the end and given the just reprisal to another character, this would have been the quintessential Tarzan novel. Still, though, it is worth the read.

From the Author NOTE:This title is currently under revision by the author for a revised release. Only minor changes will be taking place, however, NO changes will be made to the main interior. These change are a result of a change in publishing agents. This information should be updated within the next two weeks. A quick note: This is my very first short chapter style book aimed at the elementary age (3rd to 5th grade). While book one "Treasures Beneath" opens the door to the life of our lead Character "Cody", it also opens the door to the imagination and determination of an autistic child. I hope you take the time to read this, and understand the story line as it is laid out. I am currently working on book three and book two is set to be released sometime in early to mid 2016. I hope as I embark on this new part of my life, that I can encourage others to never give up and to always try.

About the Author    Dennis received career diplomas in the field of Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education from Stratford Career Institute as well as an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology and an Advanced Certificate in Social Services from Glendale University. He is currently working as an after school teacher for his local School System where he has taught for seven years in the field as a substitute teacher until 2015 when he became dedicated to the after school programs.     As a single parent of a child with autism and developmental delays; he has become a strong advocate for child and adolescent development, autism support and awareness, as well as many other programs to support the youth. His professional interests focus on autism research and education, and his current projects include activity within social media sites to provide support and awareness.  In addition, he serves as senior pastor for New Life Family Worship Center.

And the history, so much history from far back ancient times. There's art, music, Irish culture, dance, museums, shopping, food, nature, castles, and so much more. You'll need a good travel guide like this one to decide what you're going to do before you leave. It would be overwhelming to try and decide once you're there. Although, you will probably be making changes to your itinerary once you're there. If you are planning to go to Ireland, bring this book with you and I am sure you will have a great vacation.

A sci-fi novel with characteristics of the human condition By Nadine Vassallo **no spoilers** When the author completely disappears from the narrative and in comes the persona you know you are in for a good read. I was so immersed in the story, I could only see the pristine white of the spaceship and people in my mind only donned their assigned uniforms. When I looked out of the spaceship windows I only saw the black void of space. When I looked at the characters I saw their face, personality and emotions. That is how it was with Dorian Ash and the Journey to Gatland. The author managed to create a fantastical yet believable 'world' and whisks you there, leaving everything behind on planet Earth. Although as distant from our present reality as the spaceship itself from Earth, the story is one of despair and hope. It is a struggle to survive within the context of the survival of the fittest, where the fittest have won a ticket to a hopeful future but by being so they could also bring about their ruin. If you are new to sci-fi then this is a good novel to start with - ethics, medicine, romance and human interaction all find their place in Dorian Ash's adventure.

By Amazon Customer I have watched a whole lot of Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly and many other Sci-Fi programs, but I've never experienced a story like this. Recolonization on other planets is something that fascinates me, and this book is about the journey through space to attempt just that. Imagine six thousand teenagers sharing a space. They are ruled by The Eye and know little else but to blindly obey. Their seemingly perfect system is quickly revealed to be a dystopian society and Dorian's life becomes endangered. The story was new and exciting for me, and I'd love to read a sequel!

A SyFy Novel Of a Super Sized Space Ship on a Colonial Mission By Amazon Customer RG had written a SyFy novel of the selection of thousands of Earth citizens to depart Earth to cross Space to a distant planet to colonize the planet. The Ship crosses space in three areas for the onboard people. The first year the people become familiar with the Ships operations. The 2nd phase is cryogenics. The third is where everyone is awake for the landing on their new planet. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
