This issue brought forth some astoundibg scifi tinged with film noir, Wild West, battle of the sexes, and a hint of original Star Trek. My favorites were "The Brides of Rack and Ruin" by Jill Hand, and "Things in the Shadows". Fiction Magazines makes some good story choices, as this issue seemed to have a running theme. I wonder if it was intentional? Either way, very good reading that lifted my spirit during a rough week.

By Jam Diaz If you are the type of person who enjoys a lot of variety and is open to trying anything and everything, then New York is the best go-to-city for you. And what better way to explore a new place than having your very own handy dandy guidebook, right? Well, this book is that. Or at least it tries to be. I got this for free and was really excited to peruse every page because I've only been to New York twice, both instances were work-related, and I was hoping to learn more about the city through this book. However, the author's style is too generalized for my liking. If you are going to do a quick rendezvous in the city that never sleeps, then this book may be of help. But if you plan to stay longer to really experience what the city can offer then you might find this book lacking some vital information. I've read quite a few guidebooks because I do travel a lot for work, and what I have noticed is that this author's style veered towards a more simplified approach. It would have been great if he was able to provide more options for each category. Take in food trucks, hotels, and dining establishments for example. He could have cited 5 examples AT LEAST for each with specific details like what are the "must-try foods", contact details for reservation purposes, etc. What I also noticed is that it lacks in terms of its visual aspect. Since it is a guidebook, I was expecting to see a picture or two for each category just so the readers could visualize the city better. On the contrary, I like that author put emphasis on the "touristy" spots that can be found in the city that would most likely be very helpful especially to first-time goers. Also, plus points for mentioning instances when to avoid visiting a certain area due to crowd control issues. Over-all, this guidebook served its purpose but still has a room for improvement, hence, I’m giving it 4 stars, for now. I hope the author/publisher will put into consideration the lacking points I've mentioned above. Maybe they can include those if they plan to publish a 3rd edition. :)

Heelped me make better plans By Mitchelle I was in New York last year for the holiday but I could not stay for long because I was running low on funds. My trip, although planned for, did not turn out as expected and I spent more than I had hoped. I did not even get the chance to see all the places I had in mind because I was becoming on comfortable and had to leave. This was due to the fact that I spent too much in unnecessary things and did not have enough for the other things I had planned for. With this book, I realize that I could have saved more and have more fun if I had a guide like this while I was preparing for my trip last year. I took it upon myself to get the best out of this holiday this season and so when my friend told me she was going to New York, and has got a travel guide on Amazon, I decided to check out the book on her kindle. It is quite fascinating how your view about a place can change when you have a travel guide this good with you.I am now planning to give NY another chance and I borrowed this book from my friend. It has helped me with a lot of my plans. This is a great guide, if not, I would not even be writing a review on it

You'll learn and also enjoy a lot while reading this book and I must like to appreciate the author as well because the way he explained it is super awesome and everything is done in a comprehensive way in this book. You'll also get to know how you can save your money if you're on budget in New York and Of Course almost about all good places which you can visit in New York. I really liked this book and found this book so much informative even I go often there but I was also not aware with somethings and I was little surprised as well when I read those from this book. I think this book is one of the best guide books available on amazon on New York.

A family member has vanished and is possibly dead and now Tharren blames Tyler for it. And in his heart, Tyler agrees with him. But what’s the real story? A.J. Blackwood has given the readers an interesting yet flawed superhero in Tyler, who has the power of becoming a fly on the wall. But this cool ability isn’t without its drawbacks—he suffers from excruciating headaches, and when it’s not used to its fullest capacity, there are casualties. Worse, Tharren is jealous and more than one family member is missing—likely because of Tyler. This is a wonderfully written short novel of these two brothers and what they must overcome to get not only their family members back, but to regain their relationship. Blackwood has a knack for creating relatable characters through his natural sounding dialogue and vivid, yet strangely familiar settings. He makes the reader comfortable in his world and then they’re along for the ride. With an unpredictable plot and an array of entertaining side characters, I was hooked from page one. This is the perfect download for anyone who loves damaged but resilient superheroes.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. fast pace adventure By Just a Teacher I think this book is written at an appropriate level for adults or young adults maybe even middle school. The story is told about a boy named Tyler with special abilities. From the start we're drawn into his world of colors and swirls and being able to embed while he uses his powers to help the police he feels inefficient and pushed on partially by his relationship with his brother.I don't want to give too much away because I kind of ruined the story but I think you'll really enjoy the way that the characters develop the friendships that grow the backstory and the utter and complete lack of magic :-pThis is a fast read for most adults and I think that young adults and even reluctant readers might get into it since it's really really fast-paced. Definitely a good addition for any middle or high school library.

Tyler has a special gift that has spread down the family line which he viewed as both a blessing and a curse. I loved the difficult relationship between him and his brother that lead to lots of interesting scenarios. The story takes you into an entirely new world about halfway through and then throws and unexpected but happy twist! I was a little confused by the ending, but I would presume there is a sequel?Tyler's journey is an unique one that makes for an intriguing read.

After the story arc capping events in book #6, this one starts out in a seeming fog as characters shift their focus to new things. There are intriguing new story lines, continuations of subplots...but not quite the twists and turns of previous books. It's a good story with more character development, any fans of the series will enjoy it. It lays some framework and offers some hints for things to come...the calm before the next storm?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good story; looking forward to next one By L. Christensen Another great segment of the Landon series. The characters are so realistic. The interactions between them are natural and can be funny or serious. My only thing is I wish there was a bit of background from previous books to remind me of what happened. I forgot all about Wyatt and how Josie and Cooper got together. Don't need a lot, a few sentences would help. This story had plenty of bullet flying action, some really bad guys and a teaser for the next book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Do the want to ride together? By Topper Very good continuation of the Landon story. Lee is an anti-hero who may come in line and be respectable. But, then do we really want him too? Also, are all the men settling down? And the series coming to an end. It's what women do to good Cowboys. Can't wait for the next installment.

"I was stopped by a messenger from Blackstone," Sylvie said simply and held out a folded sheet of paper that had been sealed with black wax, the crest of the main guild of the city impressed into it. "Seems urgent." Siobhan broke the seal with a quick twist of her fingers before unfolding the paper. Deepwoods had strong ties to Blackstone, the master guild of Goldschmidt, and often took on minor jobs for them. To be given a message like this wasn't unusual. To get it this late in the day, however, spoke of impending trouble. She scanned through the letter quickly and unease coiled into a cold lump in her stomach. "Listen up," she called to the table, not taking her eyes from the letter. A hush instantly descended. "This came directly from Guildmaster Darrens. His daughter Lirah has gone missing." "Missing?!" several people repeated in shock. "She apparently was going to Sateren to negotiate something for her father but she never got there. He's verified that she went through Island Pass so she at least got to Wynngaard, but it's now three days past when she was meant to arrive and there's no sign of her." She raised her head and looked around the table, stating what everyone had already guessed. "He's asked us to go after her."

Highly recommended for adventure/fantasy lovers By Amazon Customer Whenever I see Honor Raconteur is the author of a book, I know I'm pretty much guaranteed to enjoy it, and Deepwoods is no exception. The characters are engaging, the world well-developed, and the plot intriguing. Like all of Raconteur's books, it's a clean read, so it's appropriate for just about any age. This particular story is set in a low-magic world where a city's guild, rather than a monarch, holds sway. The protagonist, Siobhan, leads one such guild, a relatively small collection of members with diverse histories and expertise, and they take on a job that turns out to be far more complicated than it first appeared. Readers can expect to enjoy a satisfying mix of action, mystery, drama, and humor.I will note there are a few errors the editor let slip through (e.g. your/you're and commas), but it wasn't frequent enough to diminish my enjoyment of the story. No, the only real problem I have with this book is that the second one isn't out yet! I look forward to it with great anticipation!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Decent but dull. By Hierarchy I like some of Honor's books. But this one did nothing for me. The tale plodded along. And too much emphasis was placed on the mother hen (feel good - tolerance through-line) qualities of the main hero. That worked fine in the Witch Central books. but Honor didn't pull it off.Momma came across a bit dull witted. The magic was not pivotal to the story. The world was not interesting. In truth, I did not read the very end of the book. Because, after struggling through 5/6ths of the book, I lost faith in the tale. It was boring all the way through. So who cares how it ends.So. I was surprised. This book felt very lackluster, and was of lower quality than other Honor books. Will I read the next book in the series? No. Will I read any other Honor books? Yes.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of Raconteur's best By Jay Dominguez This...this is the book I would say is Raconteur's best to date (that I've read, I did just recently discover a book of hers that I haven't read yet. I'll amend this mistake immediately). I was first introduced to this author through her Advent Mage series, which I had and still thoroughly enjoy, but had some flaws. One of the biggest and most prevalent of those flaws was the age of the characters (*ahem* young *ahem*), and I liked the fact that in this book the characters were all a little older. But I digress. The story starts with the introduction of the Deepwoods Guild, run by Siobahn Maley. There's quite a bit of exposition here, but it is forgivable since it is all being explained to the newest member of the guild. Once all the characters are properly introduced we jump strait into the plot, the guild is hired to search and possibly rescue the daughter of the Blackstone Guildmaster, who runs the entire city.As with all of Raconteur's books, this book is mostly character driven. Yes there is a plot, but most of the story is dedicated to the characters and their personal interactions. This can be a huge turnoff for people who are plot driven, since the plot isn't very compelling or complex, but if you are like me, who is very character driven, you will enjoy the book just fine. Each character is distinct and developed, with differing personalities, speech styles, and degrees of craziness that make them memorable. This is good because, even though Deepwoods is a 'small' guild, there are eleven guild members to keep track of, but you never mistake one for the other. If there any real flaws, it is that Raconteur has fallen back into a few of her bad writing habits. She has a few habit, found in every book, that aren't really 'bad' bad, like overusing certain words or having annoying character, but do detract from the story. The characters are all very nice, and immediately identify our characters as 'good guys' with very little evedince or real rational suspicion and are very amenable to helping the Deepwoods crew most of the time. That's not really how the world works. Raconteur also doesn't handle dark subjects well. In the other books I've read by her its not really an issue since none of the characters have a really 'dark' past that keeps coming back to haunt them, but in this book there are characters were were former slaves, mercinaries, and assasins, and their pasts keep coming up in often uncomfortable ways. The book also brings up subjects of racism, sexual assault, slavery, prostitution, and a myriad of other topics often, and Raconteur usually glosses over them. I realize that these topics are uncomfortable, but if the author doesn't want to or doesn't feel equipped to talk about them then don't bring it up so often. Not being able to handle dark subjects is not a literary sin, but having them in the story without being willing to deal with them is.Otherwise I thouroughly enjoyed the book, the characters, and the world the book is in. The characters are diverse, dynamic, and a lot of fun to read about, and I look forward to seeing where the story goes in future additions to the series.

Across the Blue Pacific: A World War II Story, by Louise Borden

From School Library Journal Grade 2-5 The author of The Greatest Skating Race (S & S, 2004) has teamed up with Parker to produce a successful and moving piece of historical fiction. This story is told as an American girl's reminiscence of her experiences during World War II. Molly's much-admired neighbor, navy man Ted Walker, is serving on a submarine in the Pacific, but to her, Orchard Road seemed the safest place on earth, and the war...well, the war was something far away. The text is deceptively simple and understated. Borden evokes the era through small details, word choices, and descriptions of everyday activities, such as building a snowman, the first day of school, writing letters to Ted, and spending summer days on the porch drinking lemonade and listening to baseball games on the radio. The war remains distant until the fateful telegram arrives. Parker alternates scenes of Molly's life with images of Ted on the USS Albacore. The artist's characteristic loose-lined ink-and-watercolor paintings capture the sense of a once-secure and orderly world becoming less stable. The lyrical prose and evocative pictures create a poignant slice-of-life tale that resonates with the emotions of the friends and family members on the homefront. The story will provide a human perspective to nonfiction accounts and may also touch a chord with children who have loved ones serving abroad. From Booklist *Starred Review* Gr. 3-5. In this fully illustrated, fictional memoir, a woman, Molly, recalls her childhood war years on the American home front. World War II seems far away to Molly, but her fourth-grade teacher brings it close by painting an enormous map on the wall so that the class can follow its progress, and asking the children to write letters to the servicemen. Molly writes to her next-door neighbor Ted, a friendly young man on a submarine in the Pacific. Unfortunately, Ted does not come home, but the war ends and life goes on. Beautifully written in an understated tone, the story offers a believable picture of life during the war. Tangible details of everyday activities make the arrival of the telegram relaying Ted's death and the reactions of his family and friends all the more poignant. A typical page of text, formed into free-verse stanzas, faces a full-page watercolor painting illustrating a scene in the children's school or neighborhood or, in a few instances, showing a submarine in the Pacific. Restrained yet expressive, the artwork conveys moods and mindsets as well as a strong sense of the time and place. The relatively short, graceful text and the evocative art offer an effective introduction to the period and to the profound effects that even a faraway war can have on those at home. Review "Though this story of loss is set in the 1940s, its message is timeless. . . . The retrospective narrative lends Molly's sorrow distance without diluting its significance; it also allows her to commend the wisdom of such remembrance." --Horn Book Horn Book"This elegant book speaks to the far-reaching effects of war and the healing power of memory." She captures the historical facts and gives them an immediacy that her readers can relate to. This is the story of Ted Walker, a young sailor who perished when his submarine was destroyed during World War II, told as a memory of an older woman, but through her eyes as a young neighbor girl whose classmates wrote letters to him. It's a coming-of-age story, gently told and gently remembered.

Her favorite neighbor is Ted Walker. All the kids in the neighborhood look up to him as their hero. He is a naval officer of the submarine USS Albacore. One day the navy sends word to Ted's mom that he is missing in action. The story ends and Molly is grown now. She still remembers Ted and his fellow crew men who made the ultimate scarafice for our freedom.

Review "I've been waiting for a series to come along that could knock Wimpy Kid off its pedestal as the most popular series in my library. Well, this may be it: the Aldo Zelnick Comic Novels. Save room on your shelves for 26 volumes!" — Donna Dannenmiller, elementary librarian"This terrific series will be enjoyed by all readers and constantly in demand. Highly recommended."— South Sound Book Review Council"As a teacher of 20 years, I have never come across a series that has engaged readers so intensely, so quickly. The boys in my reading group devoured the books and were sad when they finished the most recent one."— Cheryl Weber, elementary teacher"We recommend A is for Aldo! Hilarious stories, goofy drawings, and even sneaky new vocabulary words. If you are an admirer of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you'll adore Aldo Zelnick."— Oak Park Public Library"The Aldo Zelnick books are consistently better written and better illustrated than any Wimpy Kid book. Aldo is a lovable character with realistic child-like thoughts. His stories have lots of heart and learning opportunities, and they’re lots of fun to read.”— Katie Fitzgerald, children's librarian"These books made my son enjoy reading, and I can't thank you enough!"— Melanie Ault"This is a fun series that my students adore."— Katherine Sokolowski, 5th grade teacher"Every library that serves Wimpy Kid fans (which, honestly, is every library, period) should have the Aldo Zelnick series on its shelves."— Katie Ahearn, children's librarian, Washington, DC"Aldo is an endearing narrator. His deadpan sense of humor is enjoyable even for adults. Each book is a fast-paced, light read, perfect for the kid looking for a transition from comics to chapter books."— Sarah, children's buyer, Left Bank Books"You will laugh out loud—I guarantee it. The books are THAT funny."— Becky Bilby, In the Pages reviews"Amazing. Totally blows Wimpy Kid out of the water."— a Barnes & Noble reviewer"This book will appeal to kids not yet ready for the middle-school life portrayed in Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series but who have aged out of the irreverent potty humor of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series.— Kathleen Meulen Ellison in School Library Journal"When I am reading an Aldo Zelnick book in RTI, I don't want to go back to my classroom. Somehow I want to keep reading...and I don't like reading." — an elementary student

By Young Mensan BookParade This book’s title suits it well, it definitely is a great kerfuffle! A kerfuffle is a commotion and this book surely is one. With knights and Easter parties (and possibly a juvenile criminal!) it is written to be extremely funny (which it really, truly is). Aldo Zelnick’s grade, the fifth to be exact, hosts an annual medieval tournament. So, he and his two friends become knights. Amazing deeds, dragons, heroics, glory! But, there's a problem, where do you begin? And then there’s the Easter bunny thing. After a hilarious incident during Aldo’s childhood, the Easter bunny is the main character on “Easter’s most wanted”. This is a great book for kids and adults older than 7 years old. This great book has a funny plot and wonderful pictures to match.Review by Masha, age 10, Boston Mensa

By Boulder Rocks It's amazing how this series that started out great with "Artsy-Fartsy" just keeps getting better. Against a backdrop of a the Dana Elementary 5th-grader's medieval fair, our favorite characters decide to be the heroic knights of Jackalope Junction. In this Easter episode (with no Easter Bunny spoilers), they solve mysteries and confront the complexities of human nature, all with laugh-out-loud hilarity (and a great recipe for apricot kiffels). My 9-year-old son says "this is really awesome. I recommend it for anyone who likes suspense and mystery and silliness." As a parent, I love how the authors subtly sneak apt and amusing vocabulary into the stories, and how the characters are multi-dimensional. (This series is vastly superior to the "Wimpy Kid" series and other popular series, both artistically and as engaging and enriching literature.)We'll be sending this book to lots of family friends for Easter this year. Can't wait for the next one!

The Day

The day was like any other day—until it became “The Day.” At 4:05 p.m. the United States was attacked with an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) weapon. A 20 mega-ton nuclear warhead was detonated high in the atmosphere above Kansas, blanketing most of the contiguous United States and parts of Canada and Mexico with an electro-magnetic pulse that damaged nearly all microprocessors and electronic controls beyond repair. Nearly every system that depends on computers and electronics has ceased to work. The electrical grid goes down. The water system goes down. The sewer system goes down. The phone system goes down. The cellular system goes down. Cars stop. Tractors stop. Radio and TV stations go dark. The internet is no more. No more ambulance services. No more emergency services. No more government services. No more 911. In the twinkle of an eye America is sent back deep into the 19th century.

Jill Barnes, a single mom, finds herself stranded on the side of Interstate 485 near Birmingham, Alabama. Jack Chance, a bank vice-president, is stranded on Interstate 85 near Montgomery, Alabama. John Carter, a contractor, finds himself stranded near Leeds, Alabama. Each must travel home to Clarke County in rural southwest Alabama. Follow them as they each make their decisions and journey home while the fabric of American society is torn asunder and criminals run amok. The story is exciting and enlightening, compelling and fast moving, infuriating and redemptive, heart-rending and heart-warming. Keep some tissue close to hand, just in case . . . .

Review ". . . I want to express my admiration for what you have written. You have a fine sense of plot and development plus a mastery of interesting details. There is drama, action, romance, and humor. The ending is both moving and startling. It provides a brilliant transition to the next volume in this series." . . . R. Creel, Author of Religion & Doubt and Editor of The Keys by Frank Wilem "The story kept my interest all the way through, and I'm not a big reader. It's so good, because as a woman, I loved how tough Jill is. She just grabs her Glock and shoots the fire out of em! And then she has that feminine side that makes John have to stay focused to not be distracted by her. You got your he-man John that men AND women enjoy reading about. He's tough, he's brave, he's dependable, smart, always ready for whatever, but he's also very sweet and lovable. And he's gonna take care of his woman." . . . B. Dolbear Jones "The way you have written this book makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of all that is going on." . . . G. Allen

By Andy What would happen to our country if we lost all our electronics and electrical grid? Our vehicles would quit, our radios and telephones wouldn’t work, we would have no lighting or heating in our houses, stores would have no way to replenish food supplies, farmers couldn’t cultivate their crops, city water supplies would dry up because they could no longer pump water, and banks would lose records of our deposits. Our way of life would change immediately. People would die of thirst then starvation. There would be wide spread desperation and lawlessness. As an engineer and scientist, I know this is plausible because of electromagnetic pulse weapons that kill electronics but not people. In my opinion, this book accurately depicts one such scenario. It is educational in that it shows how you can be prepared for this event, and it is also a great read! You’ll be on the edge of your seat most of the time. This book was written from the second person point of view but not in the conventional sense. It took me a few pages to get accustomed to the style but after that it seemed natural. I highly recommend it.

International volunteering changed me, my overview of the world, and how by understanding other cultures, we can make a difference. Chad, despite its nickname, is a country alive and the hearts of its people continue beating to overcome the odds.

It's easy to become a superhero. First, discover a superpower. It might take a while to get used to, though --- especially if it's something as weird as being your twin brother half the time. Second, recruit a sidekick. Or, two. It'd be nice if they weren't a pyromaniacal sycophant and a foul-mouthed midget, but you get what you get. Third, and most important, hire a mentor --- preferably not a vicious mobster with a God complex, however, this may, realistically, be your only choice. Finally: go forth and fight crime. Try not to get shot, beaten, tortured, or apprehended in the process. Good luck!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A gritty, action-packed novel with a sense of humor By CLacy According to Merriam-Webster “dimorphic” means “occurring in two distinct forms or combining qualities of two kinds of individuals in one.” In this novel you have a female main character, Judith, who inhabits her twin brother Ethan’s body when she’s asleep. (Read the novel to find out why.) Judith wants to make the world a better place and decides that being Ethan by night might allow her to become a superhero, of sorts. But her plans run into some significant obstacles, in the form of a Chinese mafia, a zealous FBI agent who appears to be in love with her, a foul-mouthed black midget and various other questionable characters on the seamy underside of metro Atlanta. State secrets are being sold and Judith is sucked into the dizzying mystery of who’s selling what to whom. But even when the going gets tough, there’s a lot of smart-ass banter and X-rated name calling. It’s an action-packed story complete with characters who use Parkour to get around – tumbling and leaping through the urban landscape – where guns seem to be standard issue and where comic book conventions, like the words “wham,” “whoosh,” and “boom” get tossed in to let you know what’s happening at any given moment. In fact, it reminds me of a comic book in novel form – for readers who enjoy a fast-paced story with a gritty heroine who learns what it’s like to be a man.

The plot involves fraternal twins, one who dies in a motocross accident and his sister, the protagonist. The brother lies brain dead, and she begins to have strange dreams that she's morphing into her brother. Hence the title. She wakes up to discover that it's not a dream. Intrigued? I was. It's a good, quick read. The chapters are short, and the characters aren't complexly drawn--which is great as it's mostly about the story. Basically, the sister is a klutz, while the brother was (?) a polished athlete. This sets up interesting possibilities for the sister to use her brother's ability as her own. This involves hopping from tree to tree and running across rooftops. Something was bound to go wrong, and the FBI soon becomes involved. I'm not sure that they would be involved in a missing body case, but hey you decide. Believability is further strained by the May-September nature of a relationship that the Special Agent has with our hero. There seems to be a plot inconsistency from Chapter three to four about the location of the brother, and certain plot developments are not fully explained—such as how two women would easily move a two hundred pound body. My wife swears she could, but a furniture mover she isn't. The funny thing is it could have been addressed by one line about bringing a hand truck from the junk yard or they could have complained how arduous it was, but not to address it strains credibility. Still, it's a decent read, and there are some interesting characters, such as a little person with dreadlocks who runs a comic book store and a punk gal whose mother owns a junk yard. I think you see where the story is venturing, and I don’t want to run the risk of spoiling your fun, so pick up a copy. I don't think the author was trying for an epic story, but it's still an enjoyable read.

She goes home to absorb the impact of his sudden death and perhaps to gather the strength to let the hospital take him off the life support that maintains only his organs, not his brain.Something happens. Judith somehow slips into Ethan’s body in her sleep. Thus bolstered, she becomes the super-hero she always wanted to be, or something like it, sometimes, anyway. This novel is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek, somewhat bawdy account of her adventures. While it’s not my usual reading fare, I have to say Dimorphic was a fun read, and exceptionally well written.I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an impartial review.

Treasure Island: Titan Illustrated Classics, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Amazon.com Review Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. --Naomi Gesinger

From School Library Journal Grade 6-10-- The striking jacket of this new edition of an old classic promises more than it delivers. Thirty-one plates, full-color but predominantly in earth-tone hues, are dropped into the text, sometimes mindlessly. For example, the cover art, a pirate digging in sand among pieces of eight, reappears on page 61, facing text that sketches the lives of pirates, "gentlemen of fortune." The text never relates to the art. Ingpen's style is impressionistic but evocative of N. C. Wyeth's illustrations for the same title (Scribners, 1911, reissued by Time Warner, 1992); his plate of Blind Pow shows the subject in much the same pose. In some paintings, Ingpen uses angle and perspective effectively; interest is added by superimposing people upon background, or vice-versa. Spot line drawings, some used more than once, accent many pages. Unfortunately, in some cases, a subject is not recognizable from one page to the next, and the hazy impressionistic style makes it difficult to interpret some pictures. Although superficially handsome, this title has stiff competition from many other editions of Treasure Island , the Wyeth edition, especially. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MACopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 5-9. This is one of the best in the picture-book-size Scribner Storybook Classic series. True to the spirit of Stevenson's timeless novel, Timothy Meis' abridged retelling captures the bloody action of mutiny on the high seas and the cutthroat quest for hidden treasure. The story is told through the eyes of brave cabin boy Jim, who fights off the murderous pirates and bonds with their one-legged leader, Long John Silver. Wyeth's thrilling, handsomely reproduced paintings, originally done in 1911, will attract a variety of readers, including some older high-schoolers. In dark shades of brown and red, the pictures focus on the grim, exciting struggle on board the ship and on the island. At the same time, there's a burning golden glow in the background of almost every scene, keeping readers in mind of the treasure that drives the wild action. The most unforgettable painting--and one of Wyeth's most famous--is the melancholy scene of Jim leaving home as his mother weeps in the background. It's the elemental adventure. A bit slow and full of nautical terms I'd never heard and were hard to picture without running to Google, but overall, a welcomed escape to an island of good versus bad. It was interesting to see how much of today's ideas about pirates come straight from this book, and also how the characters seemingly change allegiance and blur the line between friend and enemy. I'm glad I read it!

What if Albert Einstein is correct and we can't ever exceed the speed of light? Approach it, but not exceed it. What kind of government could maintain the authority to mold the growing diversity of mankind into a single civilization separated in both space and time? The Empire of Mankind was established in the year 6042, 4000 years ago, after humans had managed to colonize 48 other worlds. And the Emperor had returned. The Olympics were in full swing in all of the six colonies of the solar system. Elections for Imperial Senate had begun. Virtual reality tradeshows were broadcasting twenty-four hours over the Cloud where people could experience the new technologies and entertainment the Emperor brought from the other forty-nine planets. The whole world had gone nuts for the Empire. It only makes sense because once he was gone, it would be another thousand years before the old guy made another circuit. Into this reverent time came the Rock'n Roll Bandit. He had to be an egomaniac, some kind of insane exhibitionist. His modus operand was to invade the homes of wealthy people and steal jewelry and art, and then he tied his victims up and sang to them! The music had grown so popular that copycat performers were duplicating the sound. They called it Kintala. You could hear it in any city in the solar system, and it was sucking the air out of the excitement over the Emperor's arrival. Police Special Forces Agent Amadee Kane was in charge of an investigation that would uncover a secret society that could threaten the Empire, and lead him on a journey through space and time.

  • "The Adventure of the Dying Detective", in some editions simply titled "The Dying Detective", is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Together with seven other stories, it is collected as His Last Bow.Dr. Watson is called to 221B Baker Street to tend Holmes, who is apparently dying of a rare Asian disease contracted while he was on a case at Rotherhithe. Watson is shocked, having heard nothing about his friend’s illness. Mrs. Hudson says that he has neither eaten nor drunk anything in three days. Upon arriving, Watson finds Holmes in his bed looking very ill and gaunt indeed, and Holmes proceeds to make several odd demands of Watson. He is not to come near Holmes, for the illness is highly contagious. He will seek no help save from the man whom Holmes names. He will wait until six o’clock before Holmes names him. When Watson objects and tries to leave for help, Holmes musters enough strength to leap out of bed, and lock the door, taking the key. So, Watson is forced to wait. Holmes seems delirious at times.

This tale occurs quite late in the series and only serves as a very short story showcasing Holmes's taste for the dramatic. A surprise at the end makes for a hearty chuckle at Holmes's wit.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Holmes Plays Possum By Scrapple8 Watson described this adventure as one that occurred in the second year of his married life, which probably means that it occurred during the time of `The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.' Holmes lived alone at Baker Street, but Mrs. Hudson checked up on her tenant. In this adventure, a concerned Mrs. Hudson brought Dr. Watson to Baker Street, where he found Holmes delirious, sometimes incoherent, and possibly on his death-bed. Holmes steadfastly refused to see a doctor, but after a period of cajoling, Watson finally secured a promise from Holmes to see someone - a specialist in Eastern disease named Culverton Smith. It is the master of deception at his peak, and his manipulation of the villain is artistic, but there is not much detection in this case, which ultimately makes this case somewhat unsatisfying.`The Adventure of the Dying Detective is the fifth of the eight cases published in His Last Bow, a collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories published in 1917.

It is one of our favorites to read. I bought it as a gift for my youngest boy who isn't quite 2 years old yet. It turns out that my other kids also enjoy it and regularly pick it for a nightly story. You will not be disappointed!

The book follows several families as babies or toddlers are breastfed, on outings to the beach or the shops, as the family waits for a new baby to arrive or celebrates an ill newborn getting stronger and leaving the hospital, at a birthday party or just eating a family meal at home. There are older siblings who appear to have weaned and families with just the mother shown. The ethnic backgrounds of the characters are also diverse. So much crammed into one book! The rhymes don't feel forced as I find children's books often are, and the illustrations are beautiful. The characters are all named at the end, and we were delighted to find that two had the same names as my nurslings. There's no 'goal' to this book, like trying to help children night wean or prepare for a younger sibling: it just celebrates many different aspects of normal, everyday life for a breastfeeding family. We highly recommend it! My son even just walked over, gave me the sweetest grin and said, "Mummy, can I have a milky moment, please?" Buy one for yourself and one for your expectant friend who's planning to breastfeed!

No longer a stigma, the book re-affirms the importance of this experience in the home and out in public.
