England,1939.

The Second World War threatens to destroy the Sheridan family.

Sir Christopher Sheridan, a dashing hero of the First World War, is back in khaki. His brilliant intelligence skills are desperately needed by the War Office.

David, his son, obsessed by the legend of his father’s brother, a Royal Flying Corps ace, takes to the air to fight the Luftwaffe.

Despite his best efforts, he is dogged by failure and succumbs to the pleasures of Singapore and the lovely Su Lim.

Vesta, David’s sister, embittered by a destructive romance with a Polish flier, joins the ATS and learns the hard way how a woman copes alone in war.

Passion, anger and pain are set against the turmoil of war at home and abroad.

'And in the Morning' charts the lives and loves of the Sheridan family, from the quiet Dorset village of Tarrant Royal, to the heat and fury of the Far East, out to the haunting and unforgettable desert.

‘Moving romance’, Yorkshire Evening Post

Elizabeth Darrell is the pen-name of Emma Drummond, born in 1931. Her father was a member of the British Army stationed in Hong Kong, where Drummond spent the early years of her life. As well as writing books, she worked in the Women’s Royal Army Corps.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

And in the Morning, by Elizabeth Darrell

From Publishers Weekly As in At the Going Down of the Sun, Darrell portrays the Sheridans, an English clan whose alienation from each other increases during WW II. The serenity of his estate in the village of Tarrant Royal doesn't soothe Sir Christopher Sheridan, an esthete accused by his wife, Marion, of ignoring the family's needs. Training secret agents does absorb Chris, whose son, David, becomes an RAF fighter pilot. Although many revere Chris's intellect, David despises his father for briefly deserting him and Marion years ago. Additional problems befall David after he accidentally shoots down a colleague's plane, so he transfers to Singapore, where Japanese invaders endanger his life. David's sister, Vesta, was a gullible idealist before a suitor mistreated her. Scorning all men, Vesta joins the army and witnesses horrifying carnage, an experience that leaves her more disillusioned and determined to resist a beguiling journalist's romantic overtures. Instead of using war as a mere backdrop, Darrell brilliantly shows how its exigencies and perils transform the characters' personalities. Detailed historical sidelights add to the novel's appeal. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The saga of the aristocratic Sheridan family began in the World War I drama At the Going Down of the Sun. Now World War II has broken out, and Chris Sheridan is called again to military intelligence work, which he must keep secret from his increasingly estranged wife, Marion. Their son and daughter also enter the war effort. Dissatisfied, rakish David joins the Royal Air Force, while Vesta, an army corporal and a gifted painter, brings to life on canvas the war in the Middle East. How Chris, David, and Vesta eventually find love despite, or perhaps because of, the horrors of war is a vivid, enthralling story. The reader comes to care deeply about them and experiences with them the terrible toll war takes on those fighting and those left behind. A beautiful and moving historical romance that skillfully blends fact and fiction. A.M.B. Amantia, Population Crisis Committee Lib., Washington, D.C.Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

SPOILERS: Chris's son David and daughter Vesta take on WWII and have grim adventures in so doing. Wife Marion shows a weaker side than we saw in the first novel of the trilogy--perhaps too weak to be convincing. David is injured and disfigured, but manages to fly again and, after one bad marriage, find love. Vesta becomes a painter of battle scenes and plans to marry an obnoxious "ugly American" news correspondent. Chris finds what he thinks is the perfect woman, but is killed near the end of the book. A complex, intelligent, gripping story of "love and war." If you read this, you must read the third novel in the series, "We Will Remember," in which many things change.

Everything went straight to hell after Boiler’s first day on the job. Her first assignment for the Fugitive Retrieval Agency went off without a hitch. With her bounty-hunting career off to a fantastic start, she planned to celebrate first with her family, then later with a pair of her high-school crushes, hoping one thing would lead to another, before accepting her next gig in the morning. There was nowhere to go from here but upward and onward. But only a few hours later, fallout from that first success dropped on her like a meteorite, and her whole world imploded on her. Targeted by a vengeful local crime lord, the hunter became the hunted. With bounty hunters, assassins, and mercenaries coming after Boiler, her family, her friends, and her two lovers, there’s no safe place on Earth. Their flight takes them to the jumpgate and starship construction station in orbit above Io, where they lay low and hope the situation back home blows over. There, Boiler slowly finds her place on the station’s security team, makes new friends, and begins to build a new life with her boyfriend and girlfriend. But even five hundred million miles from Earth, Boiler can't remain hidden forever.

What’s even worse, is that it’s your first day on the job. Yep, this is the kind of luck Boiler has. What could get worse? Yeah you’re not supposed to ask that! Now Boiler has been targeted by a local crime lord- yep that’s worse! Now she isn’t even safe on Earth. This is not something Boiler is used to, she is usually the one doing to the hunting, not the hunted. You see, that was what Boiler job entailed, she is a bounty hunter. Always has been, and is usually damn good at her job. Well, at least until she has a bad day….Upon realizing she is no longer safe on Earth, Boiler decides to make a safer heading elsewhere. She heads to a starship construction station, where she hopes to remain safely, until everything clears up.In the meantime, while there, Boiler finds her place on the stations security team. Here she makes some new friends, and even better, a new boy friend and girl friend. Now she hopes to make a better start, and feel safe, and enable everyone else's safety at the same time.In the meantime, will the crime lord find her again? Is she really safe? What do you think could happen? You need to read to find out! This is an extremely fun book, that will keep you on the tip of your chair. You are truly worried about Boiler and what will become of her. Boiler has a great personality, and you will enjoy her. Therefore I give this book, Chaser five stars. Fred has entertained me once again! I feel he will do the same to you, so give his book a look, see! You will be glad you did!

Jack London was an American author, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories ”To Build a Fire”, ”An Odyssey of the North”, and ”Love of Life”. He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as ”The Pearls of Parlay” and ”The Heathen”, and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was part of the radical literary group, ”The Crowd”, in San Francisco, and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes.

Lefcourte A little corny but a great read for Dog Lovers. The sequel is "Michael, Brother of Jerry". If you like London's tales, especially his dog stories or South Seas stories you'll like this. If you've owned an Irish Terrier you'll know how accurate London is, he definitely had owned one and, from the preface, one very similar to Jerry.Jerry is born on a plantation in the Solomon Islands, accompanies a White Trader and lives among the natives. The book is filled with South Sea Islands lore of the turn of the century before last. Right up there with Conrad and Stevenson for lovers of that millieu.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. jerry of the islands By Dale Smith Jerry of the Islands is a good book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, it is not for everyone. If you can get past the archaic, and sometimes objectionable use of the language. You will like this book.In the author's defense, this story was written in 1914, and the terms used at that time were considered to be more acceptable.I like this book because I used to own an Irish Terrier, and I considered the dog to be the most splendid animal in all the world. This book brought back memories of the types of things that my dog would, and would not do. So if you have a fondness for dogs, especially Irish Terriers. You will enjoy this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Cool Dog and the South Seas!!! By Bill Chadwell How can you go wrong with a combination like that? Jerry is a rough haired Irish Terrier that has ALL the terrier traits in his DNA. Rough, tough, sometimes scoundrel and sometimes clown sometimes protector and sometimes attacker. Jack London has been one of my favorite authors for almost fifty years since I read my first London book "Call of the Wild" when I was about twelve years old. Needles to say I am a dog lover and in that book Buck was to me the king of dogs and the book itself the king of dog tales. Since I have now read "Jerry of the Islands" I may have to retract that statement as Jerry had my undivided attention throughout the story. Like Buck, Jerry shares his adventures with a wide range of characters some good some terribly bad. You think you know where the story is heading then it takes a turn and heads off in a direction quite different but exciting. After "Jerry of the Islands" I just had to read "Michael, Brother of Jerry". Racially sensitive individuals won't appreciate the language in the book but keep in mind this book was written at the turn of the 20th century and it obviously how people spoke back then. At least people in the South Seas anyway. I highly recommend this book if you like dogs, the South Sea Islands, sailing, and adventure. It's a story every bit an equal to "Call of the Wild".

By Mean panda It is true that this scholar , Professor of Zoology at The Imperial University of Japan among other placesand scholarly interests -- such as Ethnography and the Arts Including identification and cataloging AsianCeramics and ancient Pottery -- carries a currently politically incorrect bluntness in his observations of19 Century China . The careful reader understands such personal preferences and finds a Treasure Trove of long ago travel lore replete with his own drawn illustrations . Look for his masterwork JapaneseHomes And Their Surroundings . Read both .

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Racist and misguided publication that was indicative of the times - a total waste of money, but not time By Kleaning K In this day and age to read the author's 1902's flagrantly prejudiced observations, skewed analysis and biased comparisons of China (where he spent perhaps a few weeks) versus his observations of his beloved and so-called more superior country, Japan (where he spent years), is to glimpse the embarrassing and pathetic ignorance of a so-called educated man whose condescending manner of observations is exceeded only by his offensive ignorance that a few experiences with a handful of Chinese persons out of the hundreds of millions who lived hand-to-mouth daily could define what China is. The author further shames himself by ignoring the fact that so much of China's "degradation" and filth" and "poverty" came at the brutal hands of foreigners such as himself and other White devils who imperialized the country. It becomes a painful read when an elitist and classist pig like Mr. Morse puts his racist, judgmental views on paper for all to mock, often drawing incorrect assumptions and conclusions during the process. As offensive as the book is, it serves as a good example of the arrogance of foreigners who dared to judge a country and its people after bringing it to its knees during decades of imperialism. It did not help that his naive and rose-colored view of Japan would not fortell the brutality and systemic attempts to wipe out the nation the Japanese would inflict on China (in many ways, far more brutal and barbaric than the Europeans ever conceived) and the rest of the world in fewer than three decades' time after the publication of the book. However, this book has one merit and that is some of his concessions of the damage inflicted by foreigners albeit delivered as sanctimoniously and as pompously as one would expect of his ilk. The book's content is not worth the price of anger that it elicits, but is still worth a read (but don't waste your money - borrow it at the library or look for a free version online) if only to educate one how not to behave or perceive a culture like the author has in a world that is supposed to be equal and colorblind. It is a perfect illustration of how an elitist education can be when wasted on the wrong sort of person.

Retracing My Father's WWII Path Can you really travel for nearly a month in Europe taking no more than a pair of swim shorts, a cell phone and a few toiletries? Absolutely! But my trip was so much more than just an exercise in traveling light. In an unforgettable solo journey through Europe, I retraced my father’s WWII path in the Czech Republic and was embraced by the people of Plzen and shared in the tears of a grateful nation, even 70 years later. I also discovered my family's roots in a small town in Southwest Czech Republic, and saw the homes of my Great-Grandfather and his father, and sat in the pew where 6 generations of my family previously attended church. unencumbered My trip was thoroughly enhanced by the fact I had no luggage, or any kind of bag to carry at all. And not once did I ever feel the need for more stuff. In this book I record this emotional journey, as well as tips on how to travel so light and still have clean clothes every morning. My trip was truly a trip of a lifetime, and I whole heartedly encourage everyone to experience the freedom of traveling light!

By Mandy Hawkins Through all my 65 years of living, 47 of them married to the same man, I've never once considered traveling minimal...until now. Not that I'm ready to strike out on a two day escapade, much less go halfway around the world with only one shirt, a jacket, one pair of shoes, a pair of socks and no extra undies--Oh, and let's not forget the shorts--but perhaps now I'll reconsider packing half of my medicine cabinet, just in case.RK Pernsteiner clearly proved his point that not only could it be done, but because of traveling minimal, he was able to go places and be the free spirit most of us in our 60's were sure we'd lost 20 years ago.Kudos to Pernsteiner's wife for allowing him to take his dream trip. And bravo to RK Pernsteiner for sharing his trip with such vivid description and pictures that took us along for the ride. From the country that had lost and regained its freedom, to the chaotic streets of France, he painted his experience of traveling with so little and yet he gained so much. He has helped this reader see that owning abundance can sometimes be a burden. I can't wait to see the look on my husband's face next time we head out on some quiet get-away and I hand him ONE, and only one, small bag.

I got the electronic version and read it on my Kindle so the photos were almost impossible to see. I am intrigued by the minimalist approach but don't know if I could take it on whole heartedly. I would probably try a smallish back pack with a small IPad in it along with my prescriptions. I could only do this if I traveled without my wife, there is no way I could convince her to try this. The one comment Bob made about seeing overweight people and finding them to usually being American tourists really hit home. This is definitely a cultural aspect that we need to try and improve. Bob is lucky that his father kept a diary (log) of his war time travels. My father was in the Navy during WWII but did not keep a diary and seldom talked about his wartime experiences. He and my mother are both dead now so that opportunity is gone. I am envious of Bob and his experiences.

By John Pernsteiner To be honest, the author is my father, so I'm completely biased! But it truly is a great read if you've ever wondered what minimalist travel really looks like (something my father practiced for decades). But what really makes it a compelling read is the journey this trip took him on to see a world and discover stories truly anywhere.

But, it is not all about footbal, it is abour most stunning architecture, well known business centre, warm climate all year around makes any time good time to visit Barcelona. One can never thing about getting bored when in Barcelona. Neighborhoods of Barcelona worth visiting would be Barri Gotic, Las Ramblas, El Raval, La Ribera, Eixample, Gracia..May and June are the best months to visit Barcelona, there is plenty of infor for acommodation and transport in Barcelona. I liked top 10 attractions mentioned in the book like Camp Nou, Museu Picasso, Font Magica, Casa Barllo, Barceloneta, Casa Mila..Beautiful city, with lot of shopping regions for everyone to enjoy.

I find this Barcelona guide useful, and it definitely helped me get more out of my 3 days in Barcelona. The guide contains a list of the top and amazing tourist attractions in Barcelona, and a brief description, photos, and a map for each. Each attraction also has the opening hours and further contact info, which made a big difference when I was planning my trip. This is not just a 700+ page book, this is a condensed guide that gets to the point without overloading your brain with information, for me it was perfect.

  • Jude the Obscure, the last completed of Thomas Hardy's novels, began as a magazine serial in December 1894 and was first published in book form in 1895. Its protagonist, Jude Fawley, is a working-class young man, a stonemason, who dreams of becoming a scholar. The other main character is his cousin, Sue Bridehead, who is also his central love interest. The novel is concerned in particular with issues of class, education, religion and marriage.

Jude the Obscure: Illustrated Platinum Edition (Free Audiobook Included), by Thomas Hardy

From Publishers Weekly The controversial tale of Jude Fawley and his unconventional relationship with his cousin, Sue Bridehead, is as fascinating today as it was when Hardy published the novel in 1895. Beautifully narrated by the gifted Neville Jason, this story of repression, judgment, and true love will appeal to listeners who love the classics. Jason's proper tone and slow pacing is a perfect fit for Hardy's prose. As Jude, Jason shifts his voice to become, by turns, optimistic and lovelorn, while the supporting characters are equally well crafted. The result is a truly memorable literary experience that demands repeated listens. (May)

From Library Journal Jude the Obscure created storms of scandal and protest for the author upon its publication. Hardy, disgusted and disappointed, devoted the remainder of his life to poetry and never wrote another novel. Today, the material is far less shocking. Jude Fawley, a poor stone carver with aspirations toward an academic career, is thwarted at every turn and is finally forced to give up his dreams of a university education. He is tricked into an unwise marriage, and when his wife deserts him, he begins a relationship with a free-spirited cousin. With this begins the descent into bleak tragedy as the couple alternately defy and succumb to the pressures of a deeply disapproving society. Hardy's characters have a fascinating ambiguity: they are victimized by a stern moral code, but they are also selfish and weak-willed creatures who bring on much of their own difficulties through their own vacillations and submissions to impulse. The abridgment speeds Jude's fall to considerable dramatic effect, but it also deletes the author's agonizing logic. Instead of the meticulous weaving of Jude's destiny, we get a somewhat incoherent summary that preserves the major plot points but fails to draw us into the tragedy. Michael Pennington reads resonantly and skillfully, his voice perfectly matching the grim music of Hardy's prose, but this recording can only be recommended for larger public libraries.-John Owen, Advanced Micro Devices, Sunnyvale, CA Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Excellent text, appropriate aids (intro, notes), and an incredible price. This is an impressive bargain."--Robert Beckett, Southwest Missouri State University

"Ingham's introduction, editing, and explanatory notes are unusually balanced, sound, and helpful in understanding this pivotal Victorian novel."--Frances Mayhew Rippy, Ball State University

"Jude the Obscure" is about a group of people whose every hope and dream is gradually crushed to a fine powder and blown away by the winds of despair. Hardy is his usual unforgiving self in this grim, discomforting tale of educational goals thwarted, marital bliss destroyed, childhood innocence corrupted, and spiritual redemption viciously mocked. Those who might suspect that this is a recent example of the current cultural debasement of family values would be amazed to know that this novel was written not in 1995 but in 1895. Upon its publication, Hardy was criticized for his pessimism when all he was did was herald the arrival of the pessimistic twentieth century."Jude the Obscure" is not an indictment of education, marriage, family, or religion, but rather Hardy's bitter commentary on how society misuses these institutions to defend its shaky beliefs and practices. Jude Fawley, the title character and society's puppet, is a young man trying in vain to transcend his environment. A stonemason by trade, he dauntlessly studies Latin and Greek with the rigorous mind of a classical scholar in preparation for entering the ivy-covered Gothic halls of Christminster, a college town supposed to evoke Oxford. Two things stand in his way: He is too poor to afford the tuition, and he marries an ignorant farm girl named Arabella who discourages his academic aspirations.Separated from Arabella but still legally married, Jude begins a relationship with his pretty cousin, Sue Bridehead, after he moves to Christminster to be nearer his goal, supporting himself with various stonemasonry jobs. Sue marries Jude's former teacher, Richard Phillotson, many years her senior, also rejected by Christminster and now a local schoolmaster. When Phillotson realizes that Sue's heart belongs to Jude, he sorrowfully but graciously cuts her loose, whereupon she goes to live with her lover. The irony that Hardy emphasizes is that the two couples in the novel who were never meant to be--Jude and Arabella, and Phillotson and Sue--were the ones who married, while Jude and Sue, the only mutually happy couple, are unmarriageable to each other.Sue is the most interesting, and arguably the most tragic, figure in the novel. At first she appears to be a devout Christian, working in a shop that makes religious ornamentation; but she soon reveals herself to be as cynical as Jude is earnest, acknowledging that she and Jude are descendants of a fractured family for whom marriage seems not to be intended. However, towards the end of the novel her character is transformed by a misfortune so violent and sickening that it has the power to convince her that she is being punished for her sinful ways. A pious person would be probably cheered by choosing conventional morality after such an incident, but Sue, fearful of the wrath of a divine force she can't know or control, is only made more miserable by feeling pressured to accept the undesirable situation of living with her lawful husband."Jude the Obscure," even more so than Hardy's other famous novels, is swamped in loneliness, frustration, disillusion, anger, and hopelessness, all delivered by the relentless fist of fate, and it is exhausting to imagine the emotional abysses he would have had to plumb had he decided against all critical opposition to continue this avenue of his career. Hardy, like Jude an autodidact but unlike Jude a professional success nonetheless, is plaintive about a social system that prevents talented people of poverty from realizing their potential while requiring them to live holy lives. His response was to write a book that would shock the public, not to shame them, but into seeing what he saw.

Hardy's Last Novel By frumiousb Supposedly, this book was burned by the Bishop of Wakefield when it was first released, and Hardy's wife was furious at him because people would think it was autobiographical. The response to the book was the final nail in the coffin that caused Hardy to stop writing novels.Jude Hawley is born into a changing world-- a world that's changed enough that a poor boy can dream about a university eduction and a professional future. However, it hadn't changed enough for that dream to yet be realizable. Hawley instead is entrapped into a hasty marriage and sacrifices his dreams of further education. Even after the marriage is dissolved by the wife removing herself to Australia, Jude continues to be haunted for the rest of his life by his early mistake-- dooming himself and his true love to a lifetime of misery. The book is bleak. The characters (Jude and Sue, primarily) can't live with the choices that law and religion demands, but they can't live outside them either and their attempts to do so only drive them down deeper. The central thesis of the book, and the one that was so shocking a the time, was that these moral and legal strictures prevented people from fulfilling their dreams and living happy lives. Jude the Obscure challenges the sanctity of marriage by building a tragedy about people trapped by its convention. An important and challenging book. It continues to be relevant today.

Appreciating Hardy's work requires a little work and the ability to pay attention and to think a little along the way. But the effort pays off. Jude the Obscure is a great book about the human condition, at least as it exists for many people. Like other Hardy characters, Jude Fawley makes a mistake early in his life and continues to pay the price until the day he dies. He commits an act of folly that seals his doom, and nothing he can do can make it right. This would be merely sad or melodramatic were if not for the fact that Jude is a truly good man with truly good intentions. It is this that makes his story truly tragic. Not only is he trapped by the consequences of his early act of foolishness, but he is also trapped and eventually dragged down by the conventions of a society that is more concerned with status and class than with character and ability and more devoted to mindless tradition than to a considered morality. Most of what can be said of Jude also be said of his love, Sue Bridehead, although I found her to be a less believable and sympathetic character. I was surprised by the frankness with which Hardy deals with sexuality in 1895, and I can understand now the furor this book apparently caused in Britain and America upon publication. Hardy is a writer of great power and insight. He also knows how to build a great story. And he is a novelist of ideas. He has his faults, of course. At his worst, he is wordy, obscure, and pedantic. But at his best, he is one of the most emotionally moving of writers. At times his books flash briliantly with passion. At times, he is heartbreaking. Jude the Obscure is a novel that no lover of fine writing and a great story can afford to miss. The novel has haunted me for weeks since I read it, and it probably will for a long time.

A fantastic read and an interesting journey from a metropolitan to a country town in the outback of Australia By Amazon Customer Tin Town is a terrific read. Lane has gone well and truly off the beaten track to explore a part of Australia rarely seen, the hot dusty outback and the fabled city of Broken Hill.WTF and laugh-out-loud moments abound but you don't have to be at all familiar with Australia to appreciate and enjoy this book.Lane recounts numerous historical and trivial anecdotes which, together with his unique view of the world, elevate the book well above the mere travel genre. Tin Town is insightful and informative but most of all it’s fun.I will be certainly planning a trip to visit Broken Hill in the near future.

Freed from his bondage, set loose upon the sundered worlds, Maul, the self-proclaimed One True King of Men, has his eyes set on a single goal: Regaining his throne. But the journey back to his home world is an arduous one, as Maul must contend with savage halfling cannibals, elven warpriests, a heaving, unspeakable horror and the worsening condition of his splintered, broken mind. Fans of classic sword & sorcery, like Robert E. Howard's Conan, as well as the more psychedelic variety, like Michael Moorcock's Elric, will feel right at home with SKALD, as will readers who find themselves craving a little more blood, guts, fire and steel in their fantasy literature. This trippy, brutal, psychedelic, nihilistic tale is not for the faint of heart. This volume contains the second cycle – episodes 017 through 032 – of SKALD, the spoken word, sword & sorcery serial. The original audio of these, prior and subsequent episodes are all available for free on iTunes, Stitcher and Podomatic.

By Sunflower4 Thrilled to add Vol II to my Kindle library -- the Character development in this story is brilliant ... I eagerly await the release of each new chapter in weekly podcast. Sometimes the narration is so exciting, intense, and passionate that I have to remind myself to take a breath. I almost always listen twice. With the publication of the written version, I find I not only use the copy as a reference but also enjoy reading at my own pace. For first-timers, get ready for an exhilarating read; Skald listeners, the book version will enhance your Skald experience even more. Sitterson's delivery is rich, passionate, intense, and he proves himself as a master wordsmith. The story reads like a favorite series that keeps you watching for the next release.

By J.Prather With it's bold, bright, digital illustrations and it's spare text, Job Site is a perfect choice for sharing with a group of toddlers. It features a bulldozer, excavator, loader, dump truck, compactor, mixer, and crane as they go about performing their functions at a job site. We have a boss that shouts commands like "dig a hole" and "dump some gravel here" before finally telling everyone "this job is done". This is a great first look at what each piece of equipment does and how they work together to reach a finished product. The varying perspectives on each spread present just enough of a visual challenge to keep young story listeners paying close attention. A superb effort and an enthusiastic recommend for toddler story groups or for any fan of things that dump, load, scoop, hoist and pour.

By Amazon Customer Just when I thought my 5-year-old boy was giving up picture books for chapter books, we got this book at the library. Instantly, this book became his favorite, and we've read it nearly every night for a week. There aren't many words, but what he loves is that every other page begins with "Boss says . . ." along with whatever command the boss gives his crew. When we get to these pages, my son "reads" this part out loud. He uses a big, deep voice, and he even stands up on the bed to act big and tall. Sometimes he cracks himself up by whispering the words. The illustrations are great, too. For boys who love construction equipment, there is one of everything here. The inky-black dump truck especially fascinated my son, since dump trucks are usually done in yellow. Also, the new style cement mixer is shown, the kind where the cement comes out of the end that goes over the driver's cab. My son was quick to point this out. The final 2-page spread is wordless and shows what the boss and his crew built, and there are lots of fun details to pick out and talk about. What a fun book! I would recommend this book for kids ages 2 to at least 5 (my experience doesn't go past age 5 yet!). And yes, we plan to buy our own copy. When he outgrows the book, I plan to use it as a base for a scrapbook for his age-5 year; I'll glue cropped photos and quotes and journaling on the pages in the large blocks of color, without covering up the story.

Bircher This little book provides an overview for preschool children about the procedure required for construction work at a job site. It is simple and to the point without too much detail that would distract from the process of conducting a major construction project from start to finish. I especially enjoyed the last page of the text which is wordless but shows the completed job site, a beautiful park the whole community is enjoying.I also liked that the "boss" is portrayed as an African American man who is very much assured of his place at the job site. Finally, this same "boss" is shown on the last page of the text at the completed job site enjoying time with his family. It is a great text to demonstrate to children the satisfaction of a job well-done.

Jake Cane was foolish to think he could drive all night. To stay awake he had detoured from the interstate highway and was relieving himself in a hedge adjacent to a used car lot. Jake had made a lot of good decisions in his life and one particularly bad one. He was about to make another bad decision. A decision that would land him in a world he was ill-equipped to enter. A world filled with death, danger, and mystery.

Your story moves along at a very good pace and causes one to want to not put the book down until it is over. Though I am not a follower of country and western music, your reference to songs in each chapter is a unique way to blend this into the story. Your description of the past and present in the venues adds to the enjoyment especially for those readers, like me, who were born in Shreveport and also know a little about New Orleans area. Like some novels, you can often determine what will happen next, but you offer some creative out-of-the-norm twists.I compliment you on writing this suspense novel which readers will enjoy the easy read. I look forward to reading the additional two novels of your trilogy soon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun read. Quick paced and "no filler" By Amazon Customer fun read. Quick paced and "no filler". I come from a family of readers --taught English at college level yrs ago. I learned to "fast forward" thru parts that meant nothing to the story "just filler". Canes Break reminds me of a Elmore Leonard book.. fun characters, borderline good/bad characters and when you finish you want to visit the surviving characters again. At no point did I "fast forward" ..looking forward to next book with these characters

Like most children, Renata Haberer loved the train. The sound of the whistle. The gentle hum of wheels hugging the tracks. Chatting with passengers she did not know. Renata loved it all. But all that changed on an October day in 1940 when German soldiers forced Renata’s family and her town’s fellow Jews on a different kind of train for a destination unknown. It wasn’t just Renata’s love of trains that changed that day. Everything she cherished would never be the same. Based on actual events, Renata tells the story of a German girl born as Adolph Hitler comes to power. At first shielded by her parents of Nazi abuses and a world collapsing around them, Renata’s facade of a normal childhood begins to crumble with Kristallnacht. Soon one horrific change after another shatters Renata’s life, leading to a separation from her parents and ultimately a race to the Swiss border with a German soldier at her heels. No longer did Renata wish for a new doll or a new party dress—all she wished for was to be with her family. Geared to readers ages ten and up, Renata is authored by Helen Stein Behr, a long-time elementary school educator who approaches this true Holocaust story with a prose and sensitivity appropriate for readers of any age. Adults and children alike will find Renata to be a page-turning and riveting story of a young girl’s despair, hope and courage – and a joyful ending that defied the odds.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a way to teach the holocaust before high school By English Teacher I am a sixth grade English teacher and I've been searching for the right novel to teach the holocaust to my students. Behr's Renata is brilliant. The greats: Weisel's Night, Spiegelman's Maus, and Anne Frank's diary are obviously terrific, but my sixth graders aren't ready for them. The parents and administration voice objections not to novels pertaining to the holocaust specifically, but oppose exposing today's 11 year olds to death, and blood, and carnage, and murder. Thus the middle school classroom has become this cleansed version of what it used to be--I teach a "literature-lite" curriculum rife with adventure novels, as long as they aren't too dangerous, passionate love poems, as long as the writing isn't too revealing, and non-fiction excerpts, as long as the pieces aren't too honest. Of course the inverse is happening at home, while the classroom becomes more and more censored, the video games and movies these children are consuming outside of school pollute their young minds with more sex and violence than I would ever expose them to in a classic novel. I digress.Behr's novel allows the teacher to teach the holocaust, its horrors and nightmares, without stepping the bounds of contemporary society's rules. Renata accomplishes this feat cleverly, not by diluting or changing the events and experiences, but by viewing the holocaust through the lenses of a young child, Renata. Renata's vantage point is one of naiveté and innocence, she is not yet wise to ways of the world or to man's capacity for evil. Thus, this is the perfect novel to introduce the holocaust to children. !!SPOILER ALERT!!: none of the main characters die. They do experience the death trains and the death camps, they do lose complete control of their lives, they are separated from their family, and Renata does spend many of her formidable and impressionable years completely on her own. Hitler's evil is still very much there. In addition to the holocaust setting, the novel is a complete one. The main character, Renata, is perfectly flawed and changes and grows throughout the story. Behr eloquently captures the wonderment and anxiety that must have existed in any young child who had to suffer from her picturesque world being torn out from beneath her feet. I am sure that my students will be able to relate to Renata's character on an almost personal level. One scene in particular, Renata and her mother embracing on what they thought would be their last night together, brought me to tears. Behr even captures some of the German soldiers performing humanizing and merciful actions. The plot moves quickly and is easy to follow (which will certainly captivate and hold the attention of young readers), and the climax is a nail-biting scene of Renata escaping into Switzerland on a dark and dangerous night.I am so excited to have found a novel that I will be able to incorporate into my curriculum, to allow my students to wade into the shallow end of the holocaust before being tossed into the deep end once in high school. I recommend this book to anyone, though. It is beautifully wrought, and an honest account of one of the darkest periods of the 20th century.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. at how much I enjoyed this fact-based story By Karen I bought this book for my 11 year old cousin, but thought that I should read it first. I was surprised, even though it was written for middle schoolers, at how much I enjoyed this fact-based story. It is a moving story of a young girl and how everything changes when Hitler comes to power. My cousin was captivated by this book. She loved Renata and her spunky personality. The book gives a nice timeline of what happened in Germany from 1938, till the end of the war, without being overwhelmingly sad or scary. While my cousin related to Renata, I could relate to her parents plight of trying to protect their young daughters at all costs. A good read for all.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You see a soft yet terrifying view of the holocaust from one of the fortunate ones, who as a young child escaped with ... By Philip Although it is a young adult book and I am almost half a century beyond young adulthood, I found it a thoroughly engrossing read. You see a soft yet terrifying view of the holocaust from one of the fortunate ones, who as a young child escaped with her still younger sister to Switzerland. There is a parallel story involving her parents, who escaped from a concentration camp and worked with the partisans, although this part of the story is again through the prism of a young girl. The heroine's story is put into historical context.
