BOHEMIANish, THE SILLY SELLING OF SEA SHELLS is about a very entertaining and even comical adventure that took place over the long summer of 2013. Dan Hagood took boxes full of his novel, “Follies of a Lazy Writer” and set sail in an RV. The plan was to sell copies door to door to pay for a 5 month coast to coast odyssey with his dog Sammy as his co-pilot. It's a crazy tale, and in telling it, he let's you in on much more of his “unconventional” life as well. It's a memorable read, and no doubt, you're sure to do lots of smiling... Have Fun! As someone who is familiar with adventure on a budget, I can identify with the notion that sometimes the budget is the adventure. In this latest installment of what this reader hopes will become a travelogue trilogy, Mr. Hagood chronicles a summer of selling his self-published book. When a writer self-publishes, they do so without the backing or guidance of one of the large literary houses. In general, there are no advances to be had, no editor advice to be sought, and there are certainly no cushy book tours. In short, a writer who self-publishes, must have courage. Ultimately, this is what makes Mr. Hagood's latest story such a compelling one. Not only did he write his book without knowing if it would have an audience, but he then turned around and sold his book door-to-door while traveling across the country in a rickety old RV. This adventure became the basis for the book I am reviewing here.Along the way we meet Mr Hagood's energetic young dog Sammy and his trustworthy old RV. We also meet an eclectic cast of characters that are either actively engaged in buying or refusing to buy a book from Mr. Hagood. This reader was frankly amazed at how interesting and lucrative these micro transactions could be.I thoroughly recommend this book.

It moves along smoothly and at a good pace. It's apparent that the writing of this work of "sci-fi" required a huge amount of ongoing research and the necessary rewrites that followed behind it. The characters are nicely developed and become personal to the reader as well as believable. I was really impressed that there were no apparent spelling nor any grammatical catastrophes, very unusual for a first book. A daunting task very well done! I hope we see a lot more from Don Sealy's vivid imagination.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex (Movie Tie-in), by Nathaniel Philbrick

Amazon.com Review The appeal of Dava Sobel's Longitude was, in part, that it illuminated a little-known piece of history through a series of captivating incidents and engaging personalities. Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea is certainly cast from the same mold, examining the 19th-century Pacific whaling industry through the arc of the sinking of the whaleship Essex by a boisterous sperm whale. The story that inspired Herman Melville's classic Moby-Dick has a lot going for it--derring-do, cannibalism, rescue--and Philbrick proves an amiable and well-informed narrator, providing both context and detail. We learn about the importance and mechanics of blubber production--a vital source of oil--and we get the nuts and bolts of harpooning and life aboard whalers. We are spared neither the nitty-gritty of open boats nor the sucking of human bones dry.

By sticking to the tried and tested Longitude formula, Philbrick has missed a slight trick or two. The epicenter of the whaling industry was Nantucket, a small island off Cape Cod; most of the whales were in the Pacific, necessitating a huge journey around the southernmost tip of South America. We never learn why no one ever tried to create an alternative whaling capital somewhere nearer. Similarly, Philbrick tells us that the story of the Essex was well known to Americans for decades, but he never explores how such legends fade from our consciousness. Philbrick would no doubt reply that such questions were beyond his remit, and you can't exactly accuse him of skimping on his research. By any standard, 50 pages of footnotes impress, though he wears his learning lightly. He doesn't get bogged down in turgid detail, and his narrative rattles along at a nice pace. When the storyline is as good as this, you can't really ask for more. --John Crace, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly In 1821, a whaling ship came upon a small boat off the coast of Chile containing two deranged men surrounded by human bones that they alternately chewed and clutched to their shriveled bodies. The two were survivors of one of the most well-known marine disasters of the 19th century: the sinking of a 240-ton Nantucket whaleship by an 80-ton sperm whale. A maritime historian, Philbrick recounts the hellish wreck of the Essex (which inspired Melville's Moby-Dick) and its sailors' struggle to make their way to South America, 2,000 miles away. Of the 20 men aboard the two boats, only eight would remain alive through the ravages of thirst, hunger and desperation that beset the voyage. With a gracefulness of language that rarely falters, Philbrick spins a ghastly, irresistible tale that draws upon archival material (including a cabin boy's journal discovered in 1960). Philbrick shows how the Quaker establishment of Nantucket ran a hugely profitable whaling industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and provides a detailed account of shipboard life. A champion sailboat racer himself, Philbrick has a particular affinity for his subject. His fastidious, extensive notes and bibliography will please historians, but it's his measured prose that superbly re-creates a cornerstone of the early American frontier ethos. 16 page photo insert not seen by PW. 15-city author tour; foreign rights sold to nine countries. From School Library Journal YA-In 1819, the Essex, a Nantucket whaleship carrying a crew of 20, began what all thought would be a normal, two-year voyage. Instead, after a year and a half of near-disasters, the ship was rammed by a sperm whale and sank in the Pacific. All hands got off in three whaleboats and were at sea for three unbearable months of short rations and little fresh water, leading to the death by starvation of some and the killing of others to provide food. One boat disappeared and the two remaining eventually became separated. When rescued off the coast of Chile, only five men were still alive, including the captain and first mate, as well as three rescued later from an island. Philbrick brings the era to life, giving readers a rounded picture of the whaling industry and its society. Relying mainly on two survivors' detailed accounts, one of which has just recently been found, he fleshes out the tale in an exciting manner that sweeps readers along. He includes modern medical knowledge of the physical and mental effects of starvation on humans. The book concludes with tales of other shipwrecks, a description of how the survivors lived the rest of their lives, and an introduction to the recent work of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. The contrast between today's touristy island paradise and yesterday's hard life will not be lost on teens.Judy McAloon, Potomac Library, Prince William County, VA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A gripping story of men lost at sea By Robert Oliver There have been many great stories of survival and tragedy on the seas, and this book is one of the best of them. At one time the story of the Whaleship Essex was well known in America, but gradually that story faded into memory. Nathaniel Philbrick brings that memory back to life again with his very well written book. The main events in this book took place in the time period of 1819-1821. The Essex was based on Nantucket Island, and in the first part of the book there is a very interesting history of Nantucket and the Whaling Trade. Enough information is given so that we understand the world that the men of the Essex lived in, and the ordeal that lay before them. The Essex was believed to be a lucky ship, but that reputation of good luck would soon be overwhelmed at sea. After several months at sea, the Essex was attacked and rammed by an eighty-five foot whale. It is fascinating to read about the attack of the giant whale on the ship, and to realize that the attacking whale was the actual basis for the whale in "Moby Dick". The Essex was severely damaged and in danger of sinking after the whale attack, and the crew faced the grim prospect of a desperate journey in open boats across the Pacific Ocean. The story of their battle for survival with little food or hope of rescue will grip your heart. Terrible choices of survival had to be made, and there are graphic accounts of starvation and cannibalism in the book. This is truly the story of a great tragedy at sea, but there is also the hope and endurance that can sometimes be found even in the darkest moments. There are moments of wonder with thoughts and descriptions of whales and the ever changing sea. I recommend this book to everyone that loves the history of the Sea, and the spirit of survival against all odds.

The ship sank and the crew was forced to sail across thousands of miles of the Pacific ocean fighting thirst and starvation. This was the story that inspired Melville's Moby Dick. It is absorbing, well researched, and reads like a good adventure novel, only it is true. It is elegant from start to finish and I say elegant because of its restraint. Philbrick had every chance to play this one for the bleacher seats, but didn't.We could have gotten a long saga of castaways dying of thirst and starvation with all of the drama of a potboiler. He could have given us a day by day description of the sea trek, but instead the trek is mercifully taken up in 90 pages. (Don't fret, you will get the anxiety wobblies during this phase of the book.) Philbrick has fully researched the physiology of dying of starvation and thirst and spares us none of the details. To survive, the crew resorted to the drawing of lots, execution and cannibalism. We learn about the history, quite plentiful in fact, of survival cannibalism from the Raft of the Medusa to the Andean plane crash. It is not a book for the squeamish. It is also a book about Nantucket, whaling, men at sea, celestial navigation, maritime commerce, and more. Never are the facts crammed down us like so many notecards in the author's collection, but are deliciously laid out in the context of the story. It is not a long book, but it doesn't seem to short either. Like most good books, it made me want to learn more about the subject, in this case the fascinating history of whaling.

By taking a rest All too often a book telling a story may also require that the equipment or the vessel used to be described. Much less frequent is the help of illustrations to let a reader who may know little to nothing about the construction (in this case) of a Whaling Vessel, understand the explanations and gain further enjoyment from the book. A further tribute to the Author is that the detail given of the ship The Essex and the implements of the Whaling Trade were of an appropriate length. Too long and the reader would have been lost in a maze of technical jargon, too little and understanding all that happened would not have been possible. For anyone desirous of going much deeper into the History of Nantucket, or of Whaling, there are 39 pages of notes written in prose form at the end of the book. They are organized by chapter, and they are further supplemented by a Bibliography.Mr. Philbrick clearly is a man qualified to relate this tale which records one of the more miserable tales of human suffering. It would have been easy and disappointing to let this story turn into a lurid 93 day telling of decisions and actions that no person should ever be forced to make. The Author maintained a scholarly approach, together with objectivity on some points of contention/speculation, of the events and how they may or may not actually have happened. He also offers insight into how these massive creatures communicate, and how that could have played a role in the collission. The Author also relates modern day medical study and facts about what physical and emotional torments the survivors endured. I thought this was a welcome addition to the understanding of just how horrible this experience was. This is the only book I have read on the History of the Essex. The book is readable even if your knowledge of ships, like mine, is near zero. And the story told without embellishment is both terrifying and amazing.A very enjoyable book.

Being a person who would rather be “out doing” then reading about it, I love this book. It cuts to the chase in a well-written, fun style without sacrificing detail.Whether reading cover to cover, flipping it open to browse randomly, or seeking out a specific section, it is thoroughly readable and useful. There are quick tips for planning your trip and the best ways to get around, “must see, don’t miss, and best of” call outs for every park, with beautiful, accurate, hand-drawn maps and fabulous photographs to help you envision it all.The book wraps up with a chapter of first hand visitor and cast member stories of the legendary Disney customer service and attention to detail. Don’t miss these! They are heartwarming, inspiring and just plain fun. There is an accompanying blog of the same name that expands on the stories and includes even more photos and videos. Anyone can add a story or experience, making it a little like Disney Party Central. Because of course, the next best thing to visiting Disney is sharing your adventures afterward! This is a book done right. Disney World is magical and meant to be discovered personally by each visitor, whether for the first or umpteenth time. Actual Factual Magic is a guide with a light hand that already is helping me plan a better next trip. I highly recommend it!

Enough information to be useful without bogging us down with too much detail. The illustrations are truly amazing, and the photos are also really well done. We didn't have time to do it all (does anyone ever?), but this guide helped us figure out what was important - the "don't miss this" info for each area was super helpful. This was a key factor in making our trip so memorable. The (low) price of this book is more than worth it for both first-timers and veterans to guarantee a "magical" trip.

I didn't like that it took a little while to get to the prayer, and sometimes Emma's communication with the reader was distracting (when she asks the reader a question and gives a response to your answer). That could've been left out. The illustrations are also not my favorite. They are just a little ... odd.In teaching very young children about the Lord's Prayer, though, this book does a good job. 3.5 starsI received a complimentary ebook in exchange for my honest opinion.

It is never too early to get children into the Word and never too early for them to commit it to memory. The book begins with a child named Emma calling you in for a playdate. You visit her room, you meet her teddy bear, you eat lunch, and then, finally, you learn about the Lord’s Prayer. Emma then takes you line by line through the prayer, explaining it as it goes. You then retreat to Emma’s room to teach the prayer to her teddy bear.I felt like the book was a little slow to start. It’s not until halfway through the book that the Lord’s Prayer is actually introduced. The purpose, I’m sure was to build the context for the prayer and to insert Emma as a Dora-the-Explorer-esque interactive character. Emma talks directly to the reader/listener and asks questions. This is all well and good, but, in my humble opinion, could have been condensed some.I do very much appreciate that the prayer is broken down line by line with an explanation of each concept. The goal of Scripture memorization should never be rote recitation but active understanding of the text. I wish that it would have gone further with this, taking time to explain the “big words” of the prayer. What does “hallowed” mean? Or a “debtor”? Or “temptation”? Be sure to your child understands what he or she is saying. That’s much more important than getting the exact words right. The book (and presumably the series) utilizes the English Standard Version (ESV), which is an “essentially literal” translation of Scripture. The ESV, on average, reads at an 8th grade level, which is why you see some of the “big” words in the prayer. For those unfamiliar (or take issue with) the ESV, the Lord’s Prayer is essentially the same in the more popular NIV. The only difference is the use of “this day” instead of “today” and “deliver us from evil” instead of “deliver us from the evil one.”Let’s Learn about the Lord’s Prayer also chose to include the addendum “For yours is the Kingdom, the power…etc.” This closing phrase has been removed from more recent translations (including the ESV and NIV) because it is not found in the earliest Greek manuscripts. Of course, this does not make the book unscriptural or wrong by including the phrase. I only make note of it in case you, as a parent, are following along in your own Bible—that phrase is not likely to be there.Overall, I get excited about teaching kids the Bible and I get excited about kids reading books and I get excited about Scripture. That makes me triply excited about this book. The key to memorization is repetition, repetition, repetition. Use this book as a launching pad to develop a system of teaching memory verses to your children. Train them up in the way they should go and, when they get old, it will not depart from them!

Excellent Children's Book to Teach Them The Lord's Prayer By jkelly821 Reading to my children at bed time was something I always wanted to make a "routine" in my house. I remember my mother reading to me as a small child, and I wanted that same special time each night with my own children. Plus, it gives them an opportunity to choose what book they want to hear that night. Sometimes in the life of a young child, it's a great privilege to make their own choices. Lately, my 3 year old has been choosing the same book over and over, and that book is Let's Learn About The Lord's Payer by Catherine DeVries (illustrated by Ryan Jackson). The main character is a 4 year old girl named Emma, who speaks right to the child as she teaches them the Lord's Payer and what it means.Let's Learn About The Lords Prayer is actually the first book in the HeartSmart series which was developed to teach children scripture in fun and engaging ways, allowing them to open their heart to God from a young age. What is unique about this series is that it pairs the scripture with song, so you can deliver the entertainment on another level too! The author, Catherine DeVries has written 20 books for children, so she is no newbie when it comes to pleasing their little ears and eyes. She is an associate publisher of Children's Resources at David C Cook, where she leads product development for The Action Bible collection, which has sold over a million copies! She lives with her husband, their three children and their large furry dog in the Colorado Mountains. My 3 year old daughter has been LOVING this book. Each night, without fail she requests that we read this book. She always answers the questions that "Emma" asks, and has been very successful at learning the Lord's Prayer. She just started preschool earlier this month where they are learning The Lord's Prayer, so this book helps us to practice a home what she is also learning in school. I cannot forget to mention the illustrations too. I feel that they are perfect for this title, and very engaging for the young children. The book itself is like a board book so it much sturdier than other books we have - this was smart thinking!I received this item complimentary for the purpose of an unbiased review.

An Interesting Tale By Awesome Indies Reviews Amy Spahn’s Preferred Dead is an interesting tale, a sort of tongue-in-cheek parody of interstellar exploration and alien invasion. The crew of the United Earth Law Enforcement (UELE) starship, Endurance, is exploring a hitherto unknown planet. On the surface, first officer, Lieutenant Viktor Ivanokoff reports ‘dead bodies that are drunk and disorderly.’ With this strange report, an even stranger chain of events is set off as the ship’s captain must make split second decisions with inspectors from headquarters, who are determined to remove Endurance from the roster of ships exploring interstellar space, breathe down his neck.Captain Thomas and his oddball crew find themselves facing off against a planet of undead—he doesn’t like calling them zombies—who are, in fact, a species that infected themselves with a toxin that killed all but their brain’s lower motor functions in order to escape death from a virus introduced into their atmosphere by the dreaded Haxozin Sovereignty—knights of the blood armor—who also happen to be at war with UELE.Despite the occasional data dump, explaining this or that technology, the book is funny throughout, until the rather chilling final chapter when the reader is finally given a firsthand look at the Haxozin. The author does a magnificent job with the interaction between and among the characters, achieving maximum comedic effect as their various eccentricities are played off against each other. The starship has the usual cast of characters, an insecure captain, a brooding hulk of a first officer devoid of emotion, an insecure security officer, a medic who got her training online, and an idiot-savant engineer who is forever tinkering with things. All of their skills somehow kludge together to solve the problem of the zombies on the planet Thassis—only initially. An enjoyable read but for a few wordsmithing issues that forced me on more than one occasion to stop and go back to make sure I understood what was happening and who was involved. The author mixes up character naming conventions to a point that readers are apt to get mixed up as well. For instance, Ivanokoff is ‘Ivanokoff’ at the beginning, and then suddenly he starts to alternate between being called Viktor and Ivanokoff in the same section of the narrative, which took me two read-throughs to sort out. A few of the other characters go through similar changes, and in the introduction of the ship’s captain, he’s listed by his first name, while everyone else is listed by last name—and, since his name’s Thomas, that, too, was confusing. The book also had a few wording oddities, such as ‘. . . it wrenched his attention behind himself. . .” which evokes an image of a near physical impossibility, if not improbability.Other than that the book was well-written and well-edited. It just squeezes into 4 stars.

As with the previous episodes, while there is action, humour and science none of that is more important than the characters. There are two point of view characters in this book, Thomas Withers and Viktor Ivanokoff. Thomas was the POV character in the first book and Viktor in the second. In revisiting these points of view the author is able to reveal more of their hopes and dreams, most especially for Viktor. This book opens a short time after the previous episode which ended with Areva’s decision to resign. Viktor desperately wants her to change her mind, but finds it just about impossible to tell Areva exactly how he feels. These moments of introspection deepen Viktor’s character, and show pathos as well as humour for his situation. The author uses the genre tropes well even down to the characters discussing their situation in this way. The book opens with Viktor, Areva and Chris Fish on a planet of zombies. Chris Fish, in his comically fearful fashion makes the point that Areva will likely die because she has resigned and doesn’t have much time left working on Endurance. Viktor obviously scoffs at this, but it becomes another of his worries.Things aren’t much easier for Thomas on board the Endurance as the ship and crew are being evaluated by two Oversight and Investigations ‘suits’.Up to now I haven't been a particular fan of zombie stories, but Amy Spahn has written a very different take on the usual zombie story, playing with it in her own humourous way. I won’t give away any spoilers, but the ending left me eager for the next episode.

By Tahlia Newland Amy Spahn has delivered another delightful installment of her Endurance series about the crew of a space ship sent to explore the far reaches of the universe because their bosses wanted to get them out of the way. The crew members are all there because they have failed in some way at other postings, and their captain’s aim is to prove that his team is not a bunch of no-hopers, but a useful part of the starship fleet. In Preferred Dead, the ship lands on a planet where the inhabitants are all zombies and the Endurance’s crew sets about the task of curing the populous of their affliction. Of course, all does not go according to plan, and though it looks very hopeful at one stage, a last moment twist delivers an unexpected outcome. Throughout the story two ‘suits’ hover around, evaluating the crew’s performance and adding another level of tension to the plot.Unlike Spahn’s previous books in this series, Preferred Dead really does need the background from the other books to be fully appreciated. This is because the themes of Victor’s relationship with the head of security and Thomas’s struggle with head command is an ongoing theme that has its roots in previous books. Preferred Dead is very much a mid-series book in that it relies on the previous books and sets up for a following book. I didn’t find the story as exciting as those in the earlier books and that is often the case with mid-series books. In summary, if you like light-weight space opera style series, then I recommend this one. The books are short, and I think best read in close succession.I received this book free of charge from the author for the purposes of an honest review.

THE NORTH OF ENGLAND Spring, 1644 There's a lot of miles between Essex and Cheshire.... and newly-promoted Colonel Hollie Babbitt is cursing the most recent additions to his company, for every step of them. A scarred lieutenant with a death wish, and they don't call him Hapless for nothing. Captain Drew Venning. And his dog. Captain Penitence Chedglow, last seen smashing up the inside of Worcester Cathedral in an excess of godly zeal, and his new companion in bigotry, the silent but violent Webb. The mysterious Trooper Gray, a one-man insurrection. Forced to leave a posting to Cromwell's Eastern Association as a result of some more than usually scatter-brained chivalric meddling by the posh poet Lucey Pettitt, Hollie finds himself up to the elbows in freezing mud at Nantwich, mired in intrigue and insubordination. When Hollie's old nemesis Prince Rupert relieves the siege at Newark, freeing up a cavalry force to hammer Fairfax's garrisons in Yorkshire, it looks as if the gallant Parliamentarian defenders will be overwhelmed in the North. But after a fierce attack is repulsed, the Northern Royalists retreat to their foothold at Selby, with its vital strategic command of both the Ouse and the road to York. It will be hard. It will surely be bloody. But will Hollie's rebel rabble be the difference between victory and defeat for Parliament in the North?

By Antoinette Sayer The Uncivil War series keeps getting better and better, and I think this is my favourite so far. I couldn't put it down, and read it in one glorious gulp. The characters are beautifully developed and I felt I was really getting to know them in this, the fourth book of the series. I find this period of English history fascinating - and tragic. Civil war is awful, but there comes a stage when it is inevitable. However there is a great deal of humour in the books - the focus is on the day to day life of the men, and not just on the battles. Longing for the next one , and almost envy anyone who hasn't yet begun the series.

Writing At Its Best By Evelyn Tidman - historical fiction author Here we go again with Hollie Babbit, Luce, Hapless and Gray in another adventure from the English Civil War, possibly the best yet. As the third book in the trilogy, I understand that timewise it fits between books one and two. As the third book also, the author has grown into her subject even more, is now experienced in her handling of the period, knows her characters inside out, back edge and sideways . . . and so does the reader. I love the way we are inside the heads of the different characters, particularly Hollie and Luce. This is writing at its best. As for the battle scenes, the writing conveys the chaos and agony, the sheer brutality, in a masterful way. The final battle as seen from Hollie's point of view, takes the reader into the thick of it, where the protagonists don't know what is going on, but fight through it anyway. We feel the fear, the exhaustion, the desperation of men fighting for their lives, expecting at any moment to die, or to lose their friends. The sheer terror and stupidity of the whole situation is vivid.I waited expectantly for this book to be published. It exceeded my expectations. I have enjoyed it immensely and heartily recommend it. I congratulate the author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More! Give me more! By Anna B This book – as the preceding ones – should come with a WARNING: ADDICTIVE label. Because once you pick it up, it is more or less impossible to put down, what with ”judas-haired” Hollie’s domestic bliss being derailed by Thankful’s utter misery and potential death, Luce’s determination to stand up for that weird little trooper nobody – nobody – likes, Hollie’s holier-than-thou father, and the general turmoil, mud, blood and gore of Civil War. Plus there is Het, Hollie’s wonderful, sensible wife, an evil-tempered stallion named Tyburn and a somewhat enervating dog that does not belong to Prince Rupert.Rich in historical detail, this book grabs the reader by the ears and drags him/her along on a fast-paced, rather dark, romp through the 17th century, accompanied by a cast of characters that by the end of the book have become almost as near and dear as flesh-and-blood family members – with the benefit of not having to wash all their bloodied, dirty linen…Can't wait for the next installment - and I sincerely hope it's a typo where it says I'll have to wait until 2017...

Fact mixes with fantasy as a hairless blue horse discovered in South Africa in 1860, grazing with a herd of zebra, becomes the object of a quest by a trio of unlikely time travelers. Rosina, an intrepid Victorian young lady, her fiance, Ned York, who was imprisoned in the Tower of London by his uncle, Richard III, and the irascible Olga from Czarist Russia must work together to obtain the horse from its owner, an amiable but none-too-bright English peer who has scandalized his neighbors by marrying a circus bareback rider. Along the way are visits to two bizarre fin de siecle Paris nightclubs and an encounter with a talking brass head who tells the worst ghost stories you have ever heard. There’s also a demanding, narcissistic twenty-fourth-century celebrity who wants to make a troupe of convincing-looking fairies appear to Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Rosina encounters an unexpected person on her trip to the past to obtain the blue horse: Her father. He’s only nineteen and has no idea who she is. Should she warn him of the railway accident that will kill him twenty-six years in the future and lead to her becoming a time traveler? Complicating things further is a shady character claiming to be an American millionaire who wants the blue horse for reasons of his own.

The Blue Horse, by Jill Hand

About the Author Jill Hand grew up in a little town on the New Jersey Shore where time moved at a more leisurely pace than it did elsewhere. She distinctly remembers a man who came around in the summers selling vegetables from a wagon drawn by a horse that wore a straw hat, and an Italian knife-grinder who went from door to door, singing opera and peddling a bicycle that pulled a little cart with a grindstone on the back. She drinks a lot of coffee, black, no sugar. Jill is keenly interested in history, especially the little things that don’t usually make it into the historical accounts. As a case in point, she once read the diary of one of her ancestors who operated an artillery piece during some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. He was at the Battle of Gettysburg, but he didn’t have much to say about it. Instead, he went on and on about some apple pie that a farmer gave him during a lull in the fighting. Those are the details that Jill likes to put into her stories; not how the battle turned out, but how good a piece of apple pie tasted to a gangly nineteen-year-old from rural New Jersey, who went off to war because his brothers and cousins were going and it seemed like the thing to do. Jill is a graduate of the College of New Jersey, with a degree in elementary education and minors in Spanish and psychology. Her psychology studies convinced her that everybody is a little bit crazy in one way or another. A former newspaper reporter and editor, Jill now writes speculative fiction. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including Another Realm, Aphelion, Bewildering Stories, Jersey Devil Press, Suspense, and Weird NJ. The Blue Horse is Jill’s first novella. It’s about employees of a twenty-fourth-century business that specializes in time travel and their quest for a remarkable animal that actually existed. She wholeheartedly believes that time travel will be possible someday and that, like television and the Internet, it will eventually be used primarily for entertainment purposes.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. grown quite comfortable and fond of the storyteller By Bill Bowler Jill Hand’s THE BLUE HORSE is a charming and entertaining story. It recounts the adventures of a band of “travel agents”, i.e., time travelers from the “agency”. The adventures are varied and detailed, with an abundance of plot, but there are so many stories, and stories within stories, and observations, and digressions, that save for the main event, the plot comes to take a back seat to the narration itself. And this is the real heart of the story. As they say, it’s the singer, not the song. The bright, gentle, feminine, hero-narrator tells her story, in all its meanderings, and asides, and observations about life, with good-natured humor that engages the reader not so much by what is being told, as by how. The characters and scenes, depicted from various epochs of history, are described as an intertwined, meandering kaleidoscope of events that, in its complexity, gradually gives way to the unifying voice and image of the narrator. She is curious, alert, knowledgeable, and kind. Her sudden and unexpected meeting with a figure from her past, while travelling in her own past, delivers emotional impact as the reader has, in listening to the leisurely but intricate tale, grown quite comfortable and fond of the storyteller.Bill BowlerCoordinating EditorBewildering Stories

Book #2 The first book of this trilogy was based on a true story, this one might be? Some parts of the story are based on true activities and some of the events are creations of the author’s vivid mind. The characters in this book are characters in real life, but the names and locations of these characters will always remain the authors secret. The location for this book is set in the sunny Caribbean around a set of fictitious islands, just off the coast of reality. There have been pirates there before and they just keep coming back to Goatan Island in the search of the booty. While on a return trip to the island the Capt’n in this book found more booty than he bargained for, the King’s golden booty, and the amazing booty on Miss Ana, a Spanish goddess. Sit back in your hammock, pour another Margarita from the pitcher and enjoy the book.

This joyful and reverent book was originally written for second graders to use in their Christmas program. The graceful couplets follow the letters of the alphabet and tell the story of the Nativity by introducing young readers to the events, people, and places associated with the birth of Jesus. The richly textured illustrations by acclaimed artist Elisa Kleven are mixed-media collages of watercolors, cut paper, and fine lines that depict the story in a folk-art style. Originally published in 1990, the book was selected as an American Bookseller Pick of the List and is being reintroduced for the 25th anniversary of its first publication.

B Is for Bethlehem: A Christmas Alphabet, by Isabel Winer, Elisa Kleven

From School Library Journal Originally written for second graders to perform, this rhyming alphabet introduces events, people, animals, and words associated with Christmas. Mixed-media collages use watercolor, cut paper, and fine lines to depict in a folk-art style the many tableaux. The background of each double-page spread features one color decorated in tiny starbursts of dots with rectangles of text and picture. Each couplet can be easily memorized by seven or eight year olds and would make a unique program; however, it would be a shame to miss the brightly colored, richly textured illustrations.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

It was written by a second grade teacher for her class to perform and it goes through each letter of the alphabet in order telling the Christmas story. "A is for Augustus who sent out the decree..." I originally discovered it because it was recommended in "The Godparent Book", when I found the library I was in awe. It is one of the few intelligent books the aims to tell the who Christmas story without dumbing it down or putting in overly cutetsy or sentimental pictures. The pictures are lavish and brightly colored. It goes far beyond the standard alphabet format so that even adults will enjoy reading and re-reading it year after year. My family reads one Christmas story every day leading upto the 25th, this is a definate must have for your collection if you do the same thing.
