Part memoir, part travelogue, part natural and cultural history, Into the Carpathians describes a four-month-long hiking and wildlife research expedition along the length of the Carpathian Mountains, from Romania to Poland, some 1,700 miles as the crow flies. As readers follow the author and his companions on this intriguing journey, they will encounter the many natural wonders and colorful inhabitants of the Carpathian landscape--both human and non-human--while gaining deep insights into the historical and mythological forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, the nations, cultures, and psyches along the way. (This volume, Part 1, covers the first half of the journey, through Romania and Ukraine.) Evocative, thoroughly-researched essays paint the cultural terrain of the Carpathian Mountains from a rich palette of topics, including: a brief history of werewolves; the exploits and the end of Attila the Hun; the mystical foundations of Kievan Rus'; the rich pantheon of Slavic mythology; the earthy traditions of Carpathian folklore; and the roots of the relationship between Ukraine and Russia that are sprouting thorny shoots today. The narrative is enhanced with 63 beautiful color photographs.

I enjoyed especially the Appendices By Ray Stanford I enjoyed especially the Appendices, with extensive information about the geographic and political history of the entire region, which was missing in the course on Western Civilizations I took in college! It covered Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece, directly to the south, so I think that was a significant omission on the topic of Western History.

By Reader Travel and adventure do not usually appeal to me, but in this case, I was drawn by the chance to see into the Carpathian mountains. My immigrant grandparents came from there, and I have seldom been able to learn much about their roots. I was lucky here. The travel narrative is engaging, and it is well-written. What stands out, though, is the interweaving of the regional history and culture, along with photographs that truly give a sense of the writer's experiences.I look forward to "part 2" which will describe the rest of the journey.

Unexpected Adventure: Wounded Beauty of Eastern Europe By david murray It fails as a coherent whole, because it is a compound of two books, travelogue and compendium of history. But it completely delights as an adventure and a tour of a gripping, beautiful world. The vignettes haunt me weeks later; if you know this land of deep history, myth, and utter tragedy, and wish to see it today, the book is indispensable. I have just shared with Ukrainian friend to her delight. Hope that the journey goes on to another volume.

I love reading books about shifters, but I’ve never read a book about Gargoyles before. I wasn’t disappointed one bit though, they are just as hot and ornery as all the other shifters out there.Kennedy doesn’t have the most welcoming night when she first arrives in the city of Woodland Creek. She falls of a building and then from there, her entire life as she knew it changes. She now sees that humans aren’t the only ones walking the streets of Woodland Creek, and she isn’t the least bit happy about it.However Kennedy is in for more surprises, after one of the hottest nights she’s ever had with the Gargoyle shifter Isaac (who also just happens to be the mayor of Woodland Creek), she can’t seem to keep him out of her head, as much as she hates herself for it. Not only that, but after that night (which she had no control of, well…. Maybe she had a choice at the end, but you’d have to read the story to understand what I’m talking about) she also loses her boyfriend that she thought was the one.Kennedy and Isaac have quite a few surprises in store for them, including this magnetic attraction they have for each other. The question is, are they prepared to handle everything that comes at them and concur it together, or will it all be too much and they let the pieces fall where they may? From the very beginning, it was impossible for me to put this book down! Scarlett does such an amazing job pulling you into the story and connecting you with the characters that you’re left begging for more at the end. I really hope we get to see more of Kennedy and Isaac, or even the Stone family. I have a feeling find the ONE isn’t going to be easy for anyone in that family. Congrats Scarlett on an amazing story, and I can’t wait to read more of what you have in store for us!

Enjoying this Novella series By Karen I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book so I chose it as one of the Woodland Creek Novella's to review, Having already read The Beast Within by Rachel M. RaithbyI had some idea of the world that these stories are themed on. So I think in someways this was an advantage, but if I had read this book first, I think I would have been a bit lost.I am going to break this down to my thoughts as I read. A shifter made of stone. And wings. A human bent on free love. And drunk. Any joke could be made with those two lines. But the town of Woodland Creek, it's no laughing matter. Hostile and magical residents guard their secrets. It's too easy to be found out. When Isaac Stone first meets Kennedy Kirk, he's tempted to shove her off the clock tower. After all, she is gripping his private parts to lean over and see his town. One little push is all it would take... Isaac never anticipated he'd be the one to fall.Beginning - Started off good, the prologue had me wanting more and I was eager to read on, having started it at night, I ended up reading later than expected. The gargoyles sounded arrogant and superior to the silly drunk human grappling over them as they sat on watch over the town up on the tower, and when Kennedy falls and is saved, I wanted to carry on and see what the prophecy was supposed to mean.It sort of went downhill after that really.Chapter 1 opens with Kennedy delivering a package, no time frame is given, it could have been a few days or a few months after her drunken fall? But obviously Kennedy is wary of being around these 'shifters, witches and other paranormal beings' that she can now see.The 'wave of lust' that hits the town just as she was delivering the package reminded me of a scene out of the True blood series, when the Maenad who gets the town drunk on lust to bring about the rising of the of Dionysus. As Erotic scenes go it was OK but after they sneak out to their own lives, the storyline seemed to drift.its only half way through the book we find out more about Kennedy, on how she was delivering the package in the first place ( she has 2 part time jobs one as a courier and then also working in a flower shop) both were used as reasons to why she went unnoticed as a human at first. The story went way off base for me during the scene where Kennedy's estranged boyfriend finally comes over to her apartment - and I really didn't get why he deliberately took their dog and made a fuss over it.I don't want to spoil the story, so I can't go into it too much.I will finish in saying that I loved the overall idea of this story, but that I feel that the backstories could have been better placed at the beginning of the novella, rather than later, and that if written into a Novel, with more time for character development, back stories about the characters, ie Boyfriend and also the 'Baddie' causing all the magic upheaval in the story it would make a 4 or 5 star read. This is the first book I have read from the author, but a friend loves Scarlett Dawn PNR books so I will be checking out her full Novel series.I do think the idea of this series is a very good one and I am looking forward to reading more from the collaborating authors.Gargoyle (Woodland Creek)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Spellbinding and Steamy Read By Melyssa Winchester This book drew me in for two reasons. One, I’ve never read a book featuring a gargoyle. Hell, if I’m being honest, I’m kind of behind in experiencing shifter books as well, so this was a double whammy. Add in that this was an author I’d never had the pleasure of experiencing before, and a pretty kick ass looking cover and I was sold.I enjoyed this short little read immensely. I have to admit that I wished it were longer, but for what was here, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t like anything I’d read before and I enjoyed quite a few of the characters, both the main ones as well as those that served a greater purpose from the background.Carter and Mike stood out at times even more than Kennedy and Isaac did. I’m not entirely sure if that was the author’s intent, but she definitely sold me on wanting more of those two. The entire family really. They all had aspects of their personalities that came through strong and made me want even more with them. Even the mother that I wanted to hate but couldn't lol. What I enjoyed most had to be the way Kennedy was presented.Often times in books and I say this because even in my own writing endeavors, I’ve fallen victim to this, the heroine usually comes across meek and mild. In this, Kennedy was a lot tougher than I went in expecting her to be and it drew me in even more. She was capable of giving back as good as she got, even when she was swept up and often times lost in what was going on around her. She was tough and I enjoyed that, especially with the way she was shown in the opening scene.I wanted to hate Isaac, but in the end couldn’t. Sure, he was kind of a cocky ass, but the reasoning for it worked and in the end, the payoff I wanted right from the first scene was given to me in spades by books end. His protectiveness came through, his affection and in the end, what appeared to be caused by magic and power, turned out to be about a whole lot more for both him and Kennedy. It was humorous on top of being spellbinding, and all sorts of steamy. The steaminess of it actually taking me off guard as in the paranormal stories I’ve read in the past, there wasn’t a whole lot of face time given to this aspect. But that, along with all of the other elements present here came together and created one hell of a read.I’m glad I took the chance with this book and with this author. Her style of writing, and the pacing of this story definitely made me a fan and now I’m eager to see what else she’s written and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll get even more of these characters.I think if you’re a fan of short reads, paranormal/fantasy style reads or this author, you’ll enjoy this.

The Bitter End (The Em Ridge Mystery Series) (Volume 2), by Linda Hall

About the Author Linda Hall spent the early years of her writing career as a journalist and freelance writer. She also worked in the field of adult literacy and wrote curriculum materials for adults reading at basic reading levels. In 1990 Linda decided to do something she’d always dreamed of doing, she began working on her first novel. The book she wrote, The Josiah Files was published in 1992. Since that time she’s written twenty-one more mystery and suspense novels and many short stories and essays. Most of her novels have something to do with the sea. Linda grew up in New Jersey and her love of the ocean was born there. When she was a little girl Linda remembers sitting on the shore and watching the waves and contemplating what was beyond. She could do that for hours. Linda has roots in two countries. In 1971, she married a Canadian who loves the water just as much as she does. They moved to Canada and have lived there ever since. One of the things they enjoy is sailing. In the summer they basically move aboard their 34’ sailboat, aptly named - Mystery. Both Linda’s husband Rik and Linda have achieved the rank of Senior Navigator, the highest rank possible in CPS. The U.S. sister organization is the U.S.P.S. Linda’s Senior Navigator diploma hangs proudly on her office wall. What this all means is that she knows how to use a sextant and can ‘theoretically’ find her way home by looking at the stars. Rik and Linda have two grown children, seven grandchildren and one very spoiled cat.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not a Single Dull Moment By Jim Davis Having read and enjoyed the first book in this series, I eagerly awaited the release of the next book and immediately purchased a copy upon its release. This second story in the series did not disappoint. I really like, Em Ridge, the main character. Em Ridge is a boat captain who comes across as authentic and believable. This mystery has plenty of twists and turns to delight even the most discerning mystery lover. The story begins in the Bermuda Triangle. After an abandoned sailboat is found, a mystery compounds upon another mystery, which begins to unfold about Em's uncle, a man Em adored, but apparently did not know as well as she previously thought in her younger years. When Em sets out to find out what happened to her missing uncle, she learns he and a female friend of Em's had a bit of a history neither had mentioned to her previously. What else was he hiding, a murder, stolen money? This story is fast paced and held my attention from the first paragraph until the last sentence. I read the story in one day, basically, because I could not put it down for long.I loved both books in this series, but The Bitter End was my favorite of the two stories. Probably because I felt like I already knew the main character from reading the first book. I am looking forward to reading more stories about this highly skilled and intelligent female boat captain, who is a survivor in the most dire circumstances.I highly recommend The Bitter End and now eagerly look forward to the third book in this series. An excellent writing style and compelling stories make for enjoyable reads. This author has moved up to the top tier level of my favorite authors.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quietly gripping and better than #1... By Steve Moore Emmeline (Em) Ridge is a female boat delivery captain. In other words, she’ll follow rich people around the oceans and deliver their sailing yachts to them because they want to get from point A to B faster. In the first book in this series, she had just lost her husband but still managed to solve a mystery. Fate gives her another blow by involving her in a new mystery related to an uncle’s disappearance. Here we go again. Ready for a fun ride? Sailing we will go.Sequels are always suspect. First, there’s the question of whether the book can stand alone. This one does, and it does it very well. There’s enough back story to bring the reader quickly up-to-date. A few characters are the same—Em, of course, her cop friend, her old neighbors, and so forth, persons who are almost part of that Maine landscape, and the author does a good job of describing them anew without belaboring the point. A new protagonist, Em’s uncle Ferd (short for Ferdinand), is mostly absent except for back story, but he plays the important role of a potential victim. He’s also accused of murder, but maybe he’s really dead, and Em stubbornly pursues the case, even over the protests of her sage but conflicted cop friend.Like the first book in the series, the characters here are complex, so much so that many can be considered persons of interest as Em struggles to prove her uncle’s innocence and discover whether he’s still alive. Because this is written in first person, the reader shares all her doubts and suspicions and will experience directly the clues as they are found. The author throws in enough misdirects to satisfy any reader of mysteries, though, confusing Em as well. (I was able to guess most of the story before long, but maybe I have an unfair advantage—I write mysteries too.) This book is probably better than the first, so that failure of some sequels is also avoided. In fact, it’s a first-rate mystery with great plot, characters, and settings. The visit to the scene of the crime deep in the heart of Pennsylvania is a wee bit unusual. Em is most comfortable on a boat, while the people in the Pennsylvania town are mostly clueless about sailing. It’s almost like first contact between Terrans and ETs! (I’ve also experienced some of that in Pennsylvania, a microcosm of the U.S. with big cities Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and a lot of rural Americana in between.) Otherwise, most of the novel occurs on and around the ocean, from Bermuda to Maine. The meaning of the title is explained at the beginning of the novel—it’s a sailing term—but any lover of the sea and sailing will smile at Hall’s authentic portrayals of action on the water.I was expecting more about the Bermuda Triangle. It really plays a minor role, although it provides a bit of strangeness at the beginning of the novel. That’s where Ferd disappears, and Em finds his empty boat with only his cat Bear on board. I also thought her temporary employer, the reality star and her reason for being there, would play more of a role, but he doesn’t. Count these things as misdirects too, I guess. The first adds eeriness; the second a bit of comedy (the reality show is about conspiracy theories).Hall’s action scenes are good and add thrills to this mystery, which also has plenty of suspense. I would have spent more pages on the final confrontation with the killer, though. The earlier confrontation with his associate gets more attention. It seemed like the author was in a rush to finish. While many details aren’t learned until the end, reminding me of those old Agatha Christie tales where everyone gathers around and hears Miss Marple or Poirot explain what happened, the denouement doesn’t contain any cliffhangers. The next Em book will have to be a fresh story, always a good thing—I’m looking forward to it.The Christie remembrance is fitting for another reason. Besides the importance of family, there really aren’t earth-shaking themes here. And the real lesson is that events many years in your past, even ones unknown to you, can come back and haunt you. So there’s a lot of old classical mystery flavor in this novel. It also leaves you thinking: what stories about your old relatives are true? All of the genealogical databases in the world would have trouble answering that question, so Em’s confusion about memories of her uncle not matching those of others in her circle of family and friends are probably not rare even in the real world. In this book, that only adds to the intrigue.(The reviewer received a free .mobi file of this book in return for an honest review.)

When Em, a boat captain, accepts a job with “Papa” for twelve days, transporting him all over the area in her boat for a documentary, they come upon an abandoned sailboat with a tear in its mast and no one on board. After finding a cat on board, alone, and then realizing it’s her uncle’s boat, Em begins a desperate search for her favorite uncle. The trouble was, no one else was looking for him. The other relatives and friends thought she was crazy and even her mom didn’t really believe that he was missing. Most of them thought he was just in debt and ran away, implying to Em that she didn’t really know her Uncle Ferd. But Em wouldn’t give up. While searching, Em’s uncle is accused of murder and of stealing thousands of dollars. Along the way of looking for Uncle Ferd, Em came across two old girlfriends, a gun-toting muscle man who wouldn’t quit following and shooting at her, a few people who the police said were dead, an abused young wife, and [something I’ll keep secret].I was literally stumped through the book until the end, and I can usually figure out a mystery puzzle fairly quickly. I loved trying to figure out the pieces of the puzzle as I read and tried to figure out the riddles. There was a lot of action too, without seeming too far-fetched. There were a few smiles and laughs too, like this one, after Em pushes a bad guys off her boat: “Can you swim?” I called to him over the wind. “No.” He came up sputtering. “Well,” I called, “good thing you’re wearing a life jacket then . . .”I liked that there was a hint of a “wanna be” romance: “I would need to be more careful in the future about where I placed my heart.” I could tell that the author loved being on the water and that made the story all the more credible. The author has a knack for creating characters that are likeable and characters who I can care about. I was really cheering Em on and I felt like I really got to know Uncle Ferd how Em saw him. The Bitter End was a very entertaining story.“Ahead of us, the sun sparkled on the water like scattered sequins.”

Sewing in Circles (Sew Zoey), by Chloe Taylor

Review "An aspiring fashion designer is the affable heroine of this first book in the Sew Zoey series. . . . In a smoothly written story of overcoming challenges with ingenuity and style, Taylor shows a knack for characterization and dialogue, and her detailed descriptions of Zoey’s designs will entice young fashionistas." (Publishers Weekly)"Most novels about fashion end up being more about little divas than about the clothing; this is an exception. This story celebrates the rewards of personal creativity and risks of self-expression. . . . This book will appeal to a middle-grade crowd that isn’t into vampires and dystopias, as well as to those who create art with their hands." (Kirkus Reviews)"Zoey Webber is a funky fashionista stuck in a gray-polyester-uniform world. The first book in a delightful new series, this will appeal to any girl finding her own style. Zoey is a bubbly and vivacious character who doesn’t let insecurities take command." (Booklist)"The characters are enjoyable and well developed, and the plot is humorous and entertaining. The black-and-white drawings that open each chapter add a bit of fashion flair. With a touching ending that will leave readers with a warm, fuzzy feeling, this novel will appeal to young fashionistas." (School Library Journal)

CHAPTER 1

Hearts for a Sweetheart Exciting news! There’s going to be a new member of the family—a baby cousin. Aunt Lulu and Uncle John don’t know yet if it’s going to be a boy—or a girl. Or if they do, they’re not telling—so I designed a unisex onesie that will work either way. Baby clothes are so cute, don’t you think? It’s hard to believe that right this minute, inside Aunt Lulu’s bump, there’s a tiny little person growing who is going to be wearing them someday. It’s hard to believe Marcus and I were once newborns, but Dad’s got the pictures to prove it. We spent a fun, but bittersweet, night looking at our baby albums. Marcus is so lucky because he actually remembers things about Mom. Me, I only know her through what other people have told me. The one thing pretty much everyone’s told me is that I’ve inherited her creativity for making clothes. What’s the sewing equivalent of a “chip off the old block”? “Hey, Zoey, do you think these buttons would look cute as decorations for a little cross-body purse?” Zoey Webber and Allie Lovallo—a fellow fashion blogger who until recently had dated Zoey’s older brother, Marcus—were browsing at their favorite store, A Stitch in Time. Even though they’d been friends before Allie and Marcus had started dating, the fact that Allie was seeing someone else and had hurt Marcus so much caused a rift in their friendship, one that Allie was trying to mend by regularly inviting Zoey to hang out. “Those are cute, but maybe a little big?” Zoey said. “I’d be afraid they might catch on a door handle and break or something. What about these instead?” She pointed to some iridescent purple and blue glass buttons. “Good point,” Allie said. “And those are fab.” She took a few sets and put them in her shopping basket. Zoey found small heart-shaped buttons she was thinking of using for the baby outfit she was making for her cousin-to-be. “Those are adorable!” Allie exclaimed. “You’re going to have so much fun making things for your new cousin.” “I know,” Zoey said, grabbing plastic snaps and zippers. “I went to Peek-a-Boo to get some ideas, and everything there was just soooooo cute and teensy, like little doll’s clothes.” The two girls went to the cash register to pay Jan, the owner of A Stitch in Time, for their fashion finds. “I like your choices,” Jan said. “And of course, my favorite young designers get the special up-and-comer discount.” “Thanks, Jan!” Zoey said. Jan’s discounts really helped her get more for her money. “Thanks, Jan,” Allie echoed. “Hey, Zoey, can I buy you a hot chocolate with the money I just saved?” “Sounds yummy!” Zoey said. “But, Allie, you don’t have to do that . . . .” Allie paused. “I want to.” “Whatever you do, enjoy!” Jan called after them as they waved good-bye. “And get extra whipped cream.” At the nearby coffee shop, Allie and Zoey settled into two plush chairs near the front window with their mugs of hot chocolate. The girls chatted about fashions they’d seen in the latest issue of Très Chic, which they’d both received in the mail the previous day. During a lull in the conversation, Allie picked at a loose thread on the chair’s upholstery. “So . . . have you ever thought about getting a booth at the Mapleton gift fair?” she asked as Zoey took a cautious sip from her still-steaming mug. “I did it last year, and it was really fun.” Allie blew on her hot chocolate to cool it. “I also sold a lot of stuff. Maybe you should apply for a booth this year!” Zoey considered the idea. It wasn’t something she’d ever thought of doing, but now that Allie mentioned it, she could see the possibilities. “It would be kind of cool to sell directly to people for a change,” she said. Zoey had only ever sold her clothing online and to friends and neighbors—never in an actual store. “It’s also a great way to get customer feedback,” Allie said. “Even when people don’t buy things, you get to see which items they pick up and look at the most.” Zoey placed her hot chocolate on the table as she got to the question that was really worrying her about the idea. “Is it expensive to rent a booth?” she asked. “You can pick a booth size that fits your budget when you fill out the application,” Allie replied. She went on to explain that the organizers of the gift fair asked applicants to send pictures of their work, and they tried not to accept too many vendors with the same kind of merchandise. It was a carefully curated gift fair. “Do you think I’d have a chance with a Sew Zoey booth?” Zoey asked. “Yes! You should apply!” Allie said. “It would be fun to do the fair together.” “I’ll definitely think about it,” Zoey said. “Great,” Allie said. She looked down at her phone and smiled. Something about the look on her face made Zoey think it was about Oliver, the boy Allie had started seeing when she’d broken up with Marcus. “Are you still seeing that guy?” Zoey asked. Allie blushed and put away her phone. “Yes, we’re still going out.” Zoey decided to change the subject back to the safer topic of clothes. They spent the rest of the time talking about their current design projects. Zoey enjoyed being able to talk to someone who understood fashion the way Allie did—so much that she was able to relax and almost forget that Allie had ever dated her brother and hurt his feelings by breaking up with him. Well, at least until Allie pulled into the driveway to drop her back home. “So . . . how’s Marcus doing these days?” Allie asked. There was an awkward silence as Zoey tried to figure out what she should or shouldn’t say. She wished they could agree to not discuss her brother if they were going to stay friends. “He’s okay,” Zoey said finally. “You know, he’s . . . moving on.” “That’s good to hear,” Allie said. Zoey really didn’t want to talk about her brother with his ex-girlfriend. She’d spent enough time playing an uncomfortable intermediary between the two of them. “Well, gotta go,” Zoey said, opening the car door to get out. “It was good to hang out again,” Allie called after her. “And don’t forget to think about the gift fair!” “I won’t!” Zoey promised, and shut the door. As Allie drove off, Zoey wondered how long it would take before things were 100 percent back to normal between them. She hoped it was sooner rather than later. Being in friendship limbo was really awkward. Marcus was in the kitchen snacking on peanut butter and an apple when Zoey walked in. “Was that Allie’s car?” he asked. “Yeah,” Zoey said, hoping he wouldn’t ask any uncomfortable questions. “She wants me to apply for a booth at the gift fair.” “Did she ask about me?” “She asked how you were.” Zoey sighed. “What did you say?” “I said you were moving on,” Zoey said. “And what did she say?” Marcus asked. “She said ‘good,’ or something like that,” Zoey said. “That’s all?” Marcus looked disappointed that Allie hadn’t been more interested in the topic of, well, him. “Yeah, that’s all,” Zoey said. “I’m going upstairs.” “Hey, Zo?” Zoey stopped in the doorway and then turned back to face her brother. “I’m glad you guys are hanging out again despite . . . you know, everything,” he said. “I know Allie’s one of the few people who understands what it’s like to be a fashion whiz.” Zoey breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m glad too,” she said. “I missed talking to her.” “I just want you to know I’m okay with it,” Marcus said. “At least, I’m trying really hard to be all mature and grown-up and everything.” “Thanks, Marcus,” Zoey said. “I appreciate it. I really do!” “Enough to let me eat the last brownie, even though I’ve already had three?” Marcus asked with a hopeful grin. “Wow, that’s a tough call,” Zoey said. But then she smiled. “Yeah, go ahead. I’m full from the hot chocolate, anyway!” During lunch in school the next day, Zoey floated the idea of the gift fair to her friends. “What do you think?” she asked. “I like the idea, but I’m worried about all the money I’d have to lay out in advance for the booth. What happens if I don’t sell enough to cover it?” “I think it’s a fashiontastic idea! It’ll be like a real clothing store!” Priti Holbrooke said. “Why haven’t you done something like this before?” “She’s sold her clothes on Etsy,” Kate Mackey pointed out. “And Allie and I did the pop-up store on Etsy, too,” Zoey said. “But this would be the first time people could see your clothes in person,” Priti countered. The girls considered this as they ate their lunches. “I guess that’s true. Shopping’s more fun when you can really see what you’re getting,” Libby Flynn said. “Especially when it comes to clothes.” “But what if I don’t make back the money I have to pay for the booth?” Zoey worried. “Also, I’m jumping the gun. You have to apply to be selected.” “You took a risk with Doggie Duds, and that worked out,” Kate reminded her. Zoey thought back on all the risky projects she’d attempted in the last year or so. They certainly hadn’t been without their nail-biting moments, but they’d always turned out okay in the end. “Why wouldn’t they select you for the gift fair?” Priti argued. “You’ve been on Fashion Showdown! Bryn Allen was on the cover of Celebrity magazine, wearing one of your designs. I mean, you’re practically . . . world famous!” Zoey burst out laughing. “Stop, Priti! You’re making me blush!” she said. “I’m hardly world famous.” Zoey reached into her backpack. “Speaking of gift fairs, I’ve got some gifts for you guys.” She handed each of her friends unique versions of the fabric bracelet she’d previously copied for Ivy Wallace when Emily Gooding was nagging Ivy to buy one. The bracelets were all the rage after having been featured in a recent issue of Très Chic magazine. Libby’s was made of two different fabrics—one printed with little candies and the other with little carrots—to remind her of how hard she’d worked for the local food pantry for her Bat Mitzvah project. Kate’s fabric was covered in daisies, because those were her favorite flowers. Zoey figured a flowery bracelet was a subtle way for Kate to bring florals into her look. And Zoey had made Priti’s bracelet with a fabric printed with stars, to signify her friend’s love of being in the spotlight. “Wow!” Libby said. “I love it! I’ve been wanting one of these bracelets ever since I saw them in Très Chic!” “These are just like the ones Emily brags about all the time,” Kate, who was more into reading about sports than fashion, said. “I love mine!” Priti said. “It’s so me!” “I’m touched you remembered daisies are my favorite flowers, Zoey,” Kate said. “But . . . why did you buy us presents when it’s not anyone’s birthday?” “I didn’t buy them,” Zoey explained. “I made them.” Priti and Libby stared at her, shocked. “I knew I hadn’t seen these fabric patterns before, but I thought you had some kind of special connection or something,” Libby said. “Like, maybe you got them before the general public could.” “No,” Zoey said. “I just made them myself, inspired by the ones in Très Chic and, well, everywhere.” “Are you allowed to do that?” Priti asked. “Why not?” Zoey said. Priti shrugged. “I don’t know. Never mind.” She put on her bracelet and held out her arm. “I love the design, though.” “Oh! Now I get the design on mine,” Libby said. “It’s about my mitzvah project, right?” “That’s right!” Zoey said. “The candy is for the sweets theme, and the carrots are because you grew vegetables and raised the money for the new fridge for the food pantry.” “That’s so cool!” Libby said. “Although I have to admit that I’m glad my Bat Mitzvah is over—well, except for writing all the thank-you notes. That’s taking forever.” “You must have hundreds to write,” Priti said. “I haven’t counted, but it’s a lot!” Libby said. “I’m pacing myself. I try to do a few every night and then some on the weekends, when I’m not volunteering at the food pantry, just so I can get them over with.” She looked over at Kate. “That reminds me . . . I haven’t seen you and Tyler at the food pantry lately.” “That’s because we’re not going out anymore,” Kate said. “Wait, what?!” Priti exclaimed. “When did that happen? And why?” “We decided about a week ago,” Kate said. “And you didn’t tell us?” Priti said. Kate shrugged. “But why did you break up?” Zoey asked. “Don’t get me wrong—Tyler’s a nice guy and all. But it’s not like we spent that much time together,” Kate explained. “And then we fought at Libby’s Bat Mitzvah—” “But you worked that out, didn’t you?” Zoey said. “Kind of,” Kate said. “But in the end, we realized we were better off as friends.” She looked around the table at the other girls’ concerned faces. “It’s the best thing. Really.” “Are you sure?” Libby asked. “You guys seemed to have fun together at the food pantry.” “We can still have fun, but as friends,” Kate said. She smiled. “I’m okay with it. Really, I am.” Kate’s smile was genuine, but Zoey couldn’t help wondering if her friend seemed just a little . . . too okay. She resolved to investigate further.

When they were too impoverished to raise their families, ancient Sumerians sold their children into bondage. Slave women in Rome faced never-ending household drudgery. The ninth-century Zanj were transported from East Africa to work the salt marshes of Iraq. Cotton pickers worked under terrible duress in the American South.Ancient history? Tragically, no. In our time, slavery wears many faces. James Kofi Annan's parents in Ghana sold him because they could not feed him. Beatrice Fernando had to work almost around the clock in Lebanon. Julia Gabriel was trafficked from Arizona to the cucumber fields of South Carolina.Five Thousand Years of Slavery provides the suspense and emotional engagement of a great novel. It is an excellent resource with its comprehensive historical narrative, firsthand accounts, maps, archival photos, paintings and posters, an index, and suggestions for further reading. Much more than a reference work, it is a brilliant exploration of the worst - and the best - in human society.

High school through college and general lending collections will find this a winning survey By Midwest Book Review Five Thousand Years of Slavery provides a powerful history of world slavery processes as a whole, from ancient Sumerians who sold their children to slave women in Rome and American blacks. History accounts, firsthand accounts, maps, photos and paintings explore circumstances of slavery in human culture, with a special focus on world slavery today linking past to present. Any library strong in world history and social issues from high school through college and general lending collections will find this a winning survey.

Expanding Your Knowledge about Slavery By Henry Zoob Five Thousand Years of Slavery really expanded my perception of the depth and breadth of slavery. I was surprised to learn how extensive slavery was in the ancient world and how pervasive it is in the world today. The book is well written and the format and illustrations are excellent. I think that the book is an ideal survey about slavery for adults and children from the age of twelve up.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A decent resource By April Perlowski Five Thousand Years of SlaveryMarjorie Gann and Janet WillenTundra Books2011A Librarything Early Reviewer book.Five Thousand Years of Slavery is a non-fiction history of slavery aimed at a young adult audience.Areas covered are: The Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece and Rome, Europe in the Middle Ages, Slavery under Islam, Africa, The Americas, South America and the Caribbean, British Abolition, North America, The United States, Asia and the Southern Pacific, and The Modern World. This is a very ambitious amount of information to try to cover in 159 pages of texts. In the end, some subjects are covered sparingly while others are covered in depth. Most of the book is focused on the middle ages to the 20th century. The areas it covers well, it covers very well. I am now much more familiar with slavery in the British and French colonies. What the book doesn't do well, is retain the interest of the reader (or at least, this one). The text is very dry.The section on the modern world is very short and sparse. I expected more, based on the cover and the afterword.A note on the bibliography: It is in an awkward format and incomplete, the authors recommend going to their website to view the full works cited. What I would have liked to see: more on modern slavery and human trafficking, and "for further information" works listed to the side of the text. All in all, a dry, but interesting and informative resource on slavery.3 1/2 stars.

This is the story of a four-day breakneck journey by air, land and finally by sea from Peninsula Papagayo in northern Costa Rica to the port city of Golfito on the Panamanian border in southern Costa Rica…and back. The mission is to retrieve a sport-fishing boat shipped on the deck of a giant yacht transport from the Jersey Shore through the Panama Canal to Golfito. To retrieve the boat, the owner’s designated representative would have to possess an American passport and would have to appear in Glofito at precisely 2:30 p.m. on the appointed day to pay fees and sign customs documents. Then, the next morning at precisely 6:30 a.m., the boat has to be retrieved from the deck of that huge transport ship, and sailed up the Pacific coast to Papagayo…in precisely two days. The boat owner’s kid sister, Ann, who will be the designated representative in Golfito, and she is accompanied on the air and land portions of this madcap race by her boyfriend (the story’s narrator) and Henry, a young Costa Rican employed as her driver and interpreter – and to sail the boat back up the coast. Ann takes an airplane! Ann’s boyfriend is swept up in this adventure and finds himself playing a come-along role as bewildered at times as a spectator at a foreign movie without subtitles. When tropical rainstorms lead to a canceled flight, the trio rents an SUV and sets out on a wild ride through a buzzing, darting blizzard of the ubiquitous motorbikes in San Juan’s rush-hour traffic. By dark, having survived the San Juan traffic, the trio head into the mountains on one-lane roller-coaster mud-slick roads encountering washed out bridges, police-enforced roadblocks, a malfunctioning GPS, sinister characters gathered in the shadows…. And I haven’t even mentioned the deep-sea adventures awaiting Henry and Ann’s boyfriend as they navigate the boat up the coast for the rendezvous with another deadline at Papagayo.

Praise for Teen Boat!    “While I am not the John Green who illustrated this book, I am a John Green who ABSOLUTELY LOVES the unadulterated brilliance that is Teen Boat!” —John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars   Teen Boat has always felt different from the other kids, which makes sense, since he’s the only one who can transform into a yacht. Now, just before his high school graduation, he embarks on an epic quest of self-discovery. He learns of a mysterious city called Boatlantis, where boats are at the top of the social ladder. Can it be true? Has he finally found the place where a half boy/half boat belongs? Or will he always be torn between two worlds?

Teen Boat! The Race for Boatlantis, by Dave Roman

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Teen Boat, a teen boy who can transform into a yacht, returns for another adventure in this sequel to Teen Boat! (Clarion, 2012). When given the chance to live full-time as a boat in Boatlantis with his submarine father, he is torn. Is he a boat or a boy? Teen Boat also finds a nemesis in TeenBot, a boy who's part-boy, part-robot, and part captain's chair. Then Teen Boat finds out that his best friend Joey descends from a boat's mortal enemy: icebergs. Older, savvier readers may not embrace the goofy concept, but younger tweens and teens will enjoy the numerous boat puns and the bright, cheerful cartoon illustrations. With its wholesome hero and high school love triangles, this work is "Archie" (DC Comics) with boats. VERDICT A light, silly read with middle school appeal.—Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library

By Shevi Teen Boat is a graphic novel for kids about a teenage boy named Teen Boat, who can turn into a small yacht. He doesn't know that his best friend--a girl named Joey Steinberg--has a crush on him. T.B. has a crush on another girl in school, and Joey is heart-broken and angry when, instead of asking her to the prom, T.B. tries to get Joey to help him ask the other girl out for him. Joey befriends the new boy in school, a rich kid with robotic parts, nicknamed Teen Bot. A boat race is announced, and Teen Boat discovers that the winner of the race will get to go to the secret city of Boatlantis, where sentient boats live. Who will win the race? Who will end up together? And what's the story behind Boatlantis? The first half of this graphic novel isn't that interesting, feeling something like an Archie comic, if Archie were some kind of Transformer that turned into a small yacht. The story makes little sense and is inconsistent. For example, in beginning of the story, T.B. can't help turning into a boat when he gets wet and can't turn back into a human until he completely dries. Later when he is on a ramp at sea, though, he turns into a boat and back into a human instantly at will. The second half of the graphic novel is much better, but it feels rushed. T.B. is a rather self-absorbed main character, and not very likable, though he does become more likable as the story progresses. There are lots of jokes, although none of them are laugh-out-loud funny. I don't want to give anything away, but there are some things that happen in the story more because they're common cliches rather than because they make sense for the story. And they don't make sense. Neither does the idea of people being married to and having kids with objects, even if they are sentient. The story is weak and uneven, but it does end well. The drawings, on the other hand, are very good. The artist does a brilliant job of drawing a boy turning into a boat, not an easy task. The artist also manages to draw each character differently, which I like. Some cartoonists will give every character essentially the same face and body, but here each character has a different face shape, features, and stance. I like that. There's one panel with a goof in that Teen Bot's hand is drawn backward, but aside from that small mistake, the drawings are first rate. This isn't a great children's book, but it is fun enough. I imagine that boys between nine and twelve who like graphic novels and boats will love this.

It's a boy that transforms into a boat. It's pretty immature and silly stupid. My dad would have loved it when he was a kid, but he was the type of man who thought the Police Academy movies were hilarious... But I guess I did watch "Turbo Teen" when I was little which is about a boy who turns into a car.I'm not saying it's bad. It's a fun light read. I'm not sad I read it before letting my son read it. I definitely smiled a few times. But my eyes rolled back into my head a number of times too!I really didn't like the euphenism exclaimed: "Motha Ruddar". I don't want my son to start thinking of things he can say close to other curse words. I don't think the exclamation was necessary or added to the story. If the kids don't get it, they don't get it. But I got it and it bothers me that it's in my kid's book. Other than that, there's not much objectionable. The teen boat has his first kiss. Authority figures are kinda blown off but not disobeyed (mainly not present). It has some teen focus with the prom, liking a girl, and the first kiss. I'm not sure if my pre-teen son will like that focus, but I think he's really love the imaginative immaturity level of the rest of the book. I think a young teen would fit in with the plot better, but I'm not sure if they would be willing to go along with the whole kid/boat thing (and the "stupid" things just keep coming throughout the book). But overall, it's a pretty fun little diversion. I think my son will like reading it, so still suggest it.

The premise alone, the only boy in the school that can morph from a boy to a boat is a pretty random way to set up a book for teen conformity angst. And it gets even more whacked from there, while somehow staying in a real world setting of a high school and community. The maturity level is strangely eclectic as well. The wackiness seems fit for 8-12, the high school setting and drama seems to be 14-17, and some of the jokes are clearly sent over their heads to parents. There were a few things I felt were perhaps a little mature for young readers like nautical puns for swear words and (spoiler alert) a woman who is impregnated by a submarine. But all in all, it is so ridiculous that it holds all readers. It is a quick read, very visual with very good, although almost computer generatedly clean graphics. It lacks an artistic looseness, but is visually wonderful. The dialogue is cleanly written and was easy for all readers from 8 to middle aged. None of us really put it down after we picked it up. Great, engaging book. We use these for road trips and it did the trick of passing 30-45 minutes per reader.

There is more action packed into the almost 200 pages than you get in novels twice or more that length. I though each of the characters very real but the adventures encountered by the main character with her friends, her cousin and her brother was a 'real cloak and dagger' style lots of twists and turns leaving the reader riveted to the book.

West Texas is such a unique place and the story made me think of all those who had to be strong to survive. I am hoping that Odyssey has many more adventures and I will get to enjoy them all.

I'm giving a copy to my twelve year-old granddaughter because I think she'll enjoy reading it and even learn a bit about a place and time (WWII) that she doesn't know.

Contained some helpful information and links that I'm following up on. Having never been to NZ, out would really help if the book contained map references to each city. It was not always clear whether a location was on the north island or the south island. Glad for the link to the railroads, but wish there were also links to RV rental companies and tours, which is the way I would like to see the country.
