This is the story of a four-day breakneck journey by air, land and finally by sea from Peninsula Papagayo in northern Costa Rica to the port city of Golfito on the Panamanian border in southern Costa Rica…and back. The mission is to retrieve a sport-fishing boat shipped on the deck of a giant yacht transport from the Jersey Shore through the Panama Canal to Golfito. To retrieve the boat, the owner’s designated representative would have to possess an American passport and would have to appear in Glofito at precisely 2:30 p.m. on the appointed day to pay fees and sign customs documents. Then, the next morning at precisely 6:30 a.m., the boat has to be retrieved from the deck of that huge transport ship, and sailed up the Pacific coast to Papagayo…in precisely two days. The boat owner’s kid sister, Ann, who will be the designated representative in Golfito, and she is accompanied on the air and land portions of this madcap race by her boyfriend (the story’s narrator) and Henry, a young Costa Rican employed as her driver and interpreter – and to sail the boat back up the coast. Ann takes an airplane! Ann’s boyfriend is swept up in this adventure and finds himself playing a come-along role as bewildered at times as a spectator at a foreign movie without subtitles. When tropical rainstorms lead to a canceled flight, the trio rents an SUV and sets out on a wild ride through a buzzing, darting blizzard of the ubiquitous motorbikes in San Juan’s rush-hour traffic. By dark, having survived the San Juan traffic, the trio head into the mountains on one-lane roller-coaster mud-slick roads encountering washed out bridges, police-enforced roadblocks, a malfunctioning GPS, sinister characters gathered in the shadows…. And I haven’t even mentioned the deep-sea adventures awaiting Henry and Ann’s boyfriend as they navigate the boat up the coast for the rendezvous with another deadline at Papagayo.
