Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

About the Author Born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Robert Louis Stevenson traveled often, and his global wanderings lent themselves well to his brand of fiction. Stevenson developed a desire to write early in life, having no interest in the family business of lighthouse engineering. He was often abroad, usually for health reasons, and his journeys led to some of his early literary works. Publishing his first volume at the age of 28, Stevenson became a literary celebrity during his life when works such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were released to eager audiences. He died in Samoa in 1894.

This Italian Life is an unusual travel book. It’s not about what to see or which restaurants to eat in, it’s about the people journalist Phyllis Macchioni has met, and places she has gotten to know in her twenty-five years of living in Italy. In this book you will meet them just as she did, one person and one place at a time. Some of their stories will make you laugh, others will bring tears to your eyes, but one thing they will all do is touch your heart just as they touched hers. And they still do.

By Law Student John Honestly, this was one of the worst cookbooks I've ever used. I'm a fairly accomplished home cook. But these recipes were mind-boggling to read. Ingredient measurements were incredibly vague. The actual cooking instructions seemed to skip steps, and I was often forced to guess and fill in the gap. I have to wonder if this was a case of either this being a cookbook that completely relies on you already being an expert in Egyptian cuisine and leaving you a peak at how this famous Cairo restaurant prepares their dishes, or if it is purposely obtuse so that you will never be able to achieve the quality of this famous Cairo restaurant.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book By aly wally Got this book a week ago. The book covers the most famous Egyptian dishes prepared by Aboul Sid restaurant probably the best Egyptian restaurant in Cairo providing delicious Egyptian dishes in a local atmosphere for Egyptians, foreigners living in Egypt and foreigners travelling there. The book describes the famous Egyptian dishes in a very easy way to understand and with vivid pictures. What could have been done better is to add the number of units produced in each meal to make it easy for the cook to know the number of final product (e.g. number of vine leaves, kobeba...etc) and also to get to know an average calorie count for each meal. But overall, the book gives great insights into the richness of the Egyptian dishes. My recommendation: buy the book and try Aboul Sid. You will never regret both.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The recipes listed in this book are great! However By Amazon Customer The recipes listed in this book are great! However, there is a fundamental flaw in this book that makes it a pretty bad cook book. It lacks the level of detail required to make any recipe successful. For example, time doesn't seem to be of any importance. Many times its unclear how long you should wait for something to cook. Also, I doubt that the measurements are correct, especially the ones for the Bessara recipe. I also found instances where steps are incomplete and one is left guessing what to do. It seems to me like the author needs to redo every single recipe, because what's in this book is not simply not delicious.

If the Kazak Guardians had a recruiting poster, it would have read: WANTED: A select few insane men to fight professional Assassins with super-human abilities. Good medical plan provided. Because surviving the training program to graduation was dangerous, even the first challenge to gain entrance could get you killed. But training was the easy part. Staying alive afterward was the hard part. Kazaks guarded individuals whose lives were deemed critical to the security of the United States. These individuals attracted fanatics and the best professional Assassins money could buy—Liars who could tell lies you believed, Ghosts who could become nearly invisible, and Illusionists who could appear to be anyone, among others. But Lynn wanted no other life—the Kazak Guardians gave her life purpose. She had grown up in the foster care system, neglected and abused, at the mercy of people who didn’t care. Even when she finally ran away, her freedom wasn’t the renewal she had hoped. So when a friend told her about a unique organization that trained individuals to protect VIPs, she knew it was the life for her. She survived years of training and five deadly challenges to become a Kazak Guardian, and entered a world of extremists and assassins, where each assignment became a deadly contest between Kazak and assassin, with the prize the life of the VIP. In spite of the danger, she enjoyed every assignment with its interesting people, new environments, challenges, and best of all, the occasional opportunity to pretend to be someone other than a Kazak—a tiger in tabby garb.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Super Heroine Bodyguard By Brian B I'm not an not expert when it comes to bodyguard work. I've watched and read about stories about bodyguards and I have reflected on the duty, responsibility, and cost of being a bodyguard. Frankly, I'm suprised bodyguards in the real world are able to do as well as they do because its got to be one of world's toughest jobs.I read this book after reading C.R. Daems other novel - "The Shadow Ryana". Sadly, I was disappointed in this novel. Overall, nothing really meshed well. The inclusion of magical assassins was probably meant to make the story more exciting but I think it ruined it. My reason is that the assassins still use mostly handguns which seem to make the whole magic concept pointless. I think it would of been to include fancy tech instead of magic or at least make the magic more interesting.Next, the Kazak Guradians is suppose to be an elite and prestigious bodyguard agency. However, they get all worried and concerned when the person being protected complains over petty matters. Lynn's rules are of a passive nature and shouldn't really have resulted in so many complaints but it was an annoying reoccurance. Finally, at the beginning of the book Lynn's worst ability was her markmanship with firearms and yet she miraculously hits with almost every shot while doing acrobatic moves ... unlikely. Basically, I just found lots of little things that didn't mesh well together and just made the story merely okay.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Let me say..... By Jade First of all let me say that i did not finish this book. Therefore, my review will only be based on the first half of the book that I did read. The synopsis was good, so i requested a sample, the sample was better so I bought the book. And with every page after the sample the book started on a downward spiral that i was unwilling to continue to suffer through.PROs: The author seemed to be going somewhere with the storyline in the beginning. A young female runaway escaping abuse to carve out a life for herself. You feel for her. You quickly become invested in wanting to see her survive and rise above all that horror.CONs: unfortunately the development of the world in which the story takes place is not well thought out or developed. It seemed like modern day USA with a dash of supernatural thrown in there but we are not given much background on the world that the author is trying to create. The supporting characters as well as the villans are one dimensional at best. The heroine herself seems to come to a complete standstill in development once she finishes her training in the school. The heroine was dull. She doesn't spend money, doesn't have too many friends, no love life, just work, home, work, home, work, home. Which is not very different from my own life in reality which is why i read!!! Now why in God's name would i want to read that in book when i am living it?!?! There seems to be no attention paid to her healing the past once she finishes the school, it's forgotten. Instead the author chooses to focus her relationship with the clients which was the books undoing in my estimate because by the third time the heroine gets on a plane to protect some rude VIP it becomes too repetative for me, i felt as if the story was not going to go anywhere and I had to stop. I figured i had already wasted my $5 there was no need to also waste my time. I would skip this one if I were you.

The Moon Pool is a fantasy novel by Abraham Merritt (1884–1943). It originally appeared as two short stories in All-Story Weekly: "The Moon Pool" (1918) and its sequel, "Conquest of the Moon Pool" (1919). These were then reworked into a novel released in 1919. The protagonist, Dr. Goodwin, would later appear in Merritt's second novel The Metal Monster (1920). Although Merritt did not invent the "lost world" novel—he followed in the footsteps of Bulwer-Lytton, Conan Doyle, Burroughs, and others—this work extended the tradition. An advanced race which has developed within the Earth's core. Eventually their most intelligent members create an offspring. This created entity encompasses both great good and great evil, but it slowly turns away from its creators and towards evil. The entity is called either the Dweller or the Shining One. Eventually of the race which created it only three are left; these are called the Silent Ones, and they have been 'purged of dross' and can be described as higher, nobler, more angelic beings than are humankind. They have also been sentenced by the good among their race to remain in the world, and not to die, as punishment for their pride which was the source of the calamity called the Dweller, until such time as they destroy their creation—if they still can. And the reason they do not do so is simply that they continue to love it. The Dweller is in the habit of rising to the surface of the earth and capturing men and women which it holds in an unholy stasis and which in some wise feed it. It increases its knowledge and power constantly, but has a weakness, since it knows nothing of love. The scientist Dr. Goodwin and the half-Irish, half-American pilot Larry O'Keefe, and others, follow it down. Eventually they meet a woman, beautiful and evil, named Yolara, who in essence serves the Shining One, and the 'handmaiden' of the Silent Ones, beautiful and good, named Lakla. Both want O'Keefe and eventually battle over him. There is also a race of very powerful and handsome 'dwarves' and a race of humanoids whom the Silent Ones developed from a semi-sentient froglike species. There develops a battle between the forces of good and evil with not only the entire world, but perhaps even the existence of good itself is at stake. But can the forces of good prevail using fear as a weapon? Or will they have to rely upon love expressed by willing sacrifice?

Review "The Moon Pool is a lost-world novel in the tradition of Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. Rider Haggard, and James Hilton that manages to be spooky, spiritual, and silly all at once."--Belles Lettres

Review "This edition of The Moon Pool is a rare accomplishment: a scholarly edition of a piece of pulp fiction. Levy's edition does a service to the whole genre." (John Huntington, author of Rationalizing Genius)

About the Author Author of 15 science fiction and fantasy novels, ABRAHAM MERRITT (1884-1943) was the most popular genre writer of his time. His talent for fantasy and science fiction writing was first recognized when the novelette version of this story appeared in a 1918 issue of All-Story Weekly. MICHAEL LEVY currently serves as Chair of the Department of English and Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. From a guy that's been to the mine. By densbtly The plot of the book, and descriptions of its characters have been covered pretty well already so I'll skip that.I'm not a diver, nor have I ever cared to be one. I bought this book because of the story's location. I live just twenty or so minutes from the town of Bonne Terre, Mo, the location of the story's mine. Though the mine's name is changed in McCoy's fictional work, very much about the location is dead on. The Bonne Terre Mine is indeed filled with water and divers routinely train and explore there. As for me, an avid non-swimmer, I took the walking tour. The vastness of the rooms, blasted and carved out by thousands of men for nearly a hundred years is completely overwhelming. The great majority of the vast depth and breadth of the mine, with nearly eighty miles of passages and rooms is under water; crystal clear, current-less and virtually lifeless. (no sea lion, sorry, but there is a fish, a bass I think, but just one)In this book, McCoy captured the darkness, the immensity and the cold, dripping loneliness of the mine beautifully. The seemingly endless lightless passages could very well indeed hide a secret nearly forever.McCoy's descriptions of the regions were very accurate, and respectful. I truly appreciated the author not taking the easy low road, locals as rural rubes and hicks. Certainly there are some here at the eastern tip of the Ozarks, but no more than you would find in New Jersey or California. Yes there is one stereotypical racist and womanizing deputy, but I don't think that this would be hard to find in nearly every police force in the nation, rural or urban. My hat is off to Mr. McCoy for treating the region and its denizens fairly, respectfully, and accurately. As to the story itself, it was truly engaging. It is a splendid thriller, not at all like most of the popular boilerplate serial-murder novels. There's little blood splatter, contrived shock or overwhelming violence. It is the story that makes this book. The heroes and villains were human and believable; the technology discussions were informative and not overpowering or tedious. You will learn things from this book, things that you might not otherwise come to know. Not that you NEED to learn them if like me you never plan to strap a pressurized tank of gas (or gasses) to your back and jump into a dark underground lake the size of a city, but the brain does get stimulated by new knowledge. The victims are also treated with respect and value, not hapless giggling idiots. They have families and pasts and futures cut far too short.I recommend this book to anyone looking to cut away from the typical blockbuster big-city shock-thrillers that litter the shelves in bookstores. Aside from being just a really good read, and a marvelous story it is a refreshing glimpse of a part of America where real people live; that vast, rarely mentioned (in literature) and often exotic land somewhere between LA and New York City.

6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Moon Pool By L. Hobson Max McCoy will hold you on the edge of your chair as you journey into not only an under water grave site but the mind and body of a serial killer. At 400 feet deep you will find the victims hidden in what use to be an mining town that now finds itself covered with water and only a part of the past. The killing seems to have gone on for a very long time and a underwater crime scene investigator Richard Dahlgren is called in to handle the investigation. Where the story goes from here is where you come in, by reading this story, it will open your mind and you will enter the mind of a serial killer. Larry Hobson- Author "The Day Of The Rose"

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Moon Pool and cave diving By William Mixon I bought this book without very high expectations, because it was apparently published originally as a mass-market paperback. But I'd been told it had a hi-tech cave-diving theme, and it did turn out to mention several cave-divers I know. (But the scene is really a flooded mine.) It's not a mystery; you find out whodunit on the first page of the first chapter. I guess it's a suspense thriller. I found it readable, but the author's inclusion of lots of unnecessary facts in an effort to show off his research skills did get a bit tiresome. The author is better at technology than character development.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect Starter Activity Book By Lacie Kenner I bought this for my 2 year old and we love it so far!We do a couple pages together before nap each day, she loves stickers and does great with the activities. There are lots of simple vocabulary words (animals, vehicles, clothing, food, etc) and pages that show beginner skills like patterns, numbers, matching, etc; there are a couple pages with very simple mazes as well, which she doesn't understand - but she is only 2 and the book is "recommended" for 3+ so I can't complain! At 2 years old she needs a little guidance as to what she's supposed to do on some pages, but by 3 all they would need is for you to read the directions for each page and they would be able to figure it out from there. The stickers are on perforated pages in the back so they are easy to tear out as you need them, and labeled per page so they're easy to find.We would definitely buy more sticker activity books like this!

  • Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented is a novel by Thomas Hardy. It initially appeared in a censored and serialised version, published by the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic in 1891 and in book form in 1892. Though now considered a major nineteenth-century English novel and possibly Hardy's masterpiece, Tess of the d'Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England.

From Publishers Weekly Anna Bentinck ratchets up the melodrama for this full-blooded reading of Hardy's classic—a staple of high-school English classes everywhere. Students desperate to penetrate Hardy's notoriously slow masterpiece should turn to Bentinck, who gives it an intense emotional coloring. She makes Hardy sound like a brother to the Brontë sisters: passionate and brooding. Bentinck alternates between a crisp, precise narrative voice that sounds like Helen Mirren, and Tess's own voice, quavering, shallow and meek. Bentinck retains her composure throughout, and her assured performance may be a welcome rescue for struggling 11th graders across the country. From Library Journal This edition of the Hardy classic includes a complete authoritative text plus biographical and historical contexts, critical history, essays by five scholars, and a glossary. A fine scholarly edition for the academic crowd.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review THE STORY is well known, but listening to an unabridged reading will always illuminate fresh themes and details. It also highlights the range of Hardy's writing, which can move from the 'opalised light of the moon' in heavenscapes, through sweeping landscapes down to a single dewdrop. Anna Bentinck conveys superbly Hardy's nuances of tone from the locals' country accents to Angel Clare's fastidious correctness. D'Urberville sounds kindly - rather than just a wheedling cad - which gives the listener deeper understanding and sympathy for Tess's predicament. - Rachel Redford, The Oldie

432 of 462 people found the following review helpful. certainly one of the greatest novels ever written By mulcahey I was looking for another edition of TESS and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the "average customer rating" was only three stars. So I'm taking a moment to correct the balance.TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES must be as close to a perfect novel as anyone has written in English. It is a genuine tragedy with a girl/woman as tragic hero. It is about life on earth in a way that transcends mere sociology. It has the grandeur of Milton but concerns itself with the lives of mortal beings on earth, as much with sex as with dirt, blood, milk, dung, animal and vegetative energies. It concerns itself with only essential things the way the Bible does. It is almost a dark rendering of the Beatitudes. The story is built with such care and such genius that every incident, every paragraph, reverberates throughout the whole structure. Surely Hardy had an angel on his shoulder when he conceived and composed this work. Yet it was considered so immoral in its time that he had to bowdlerize his own creation in order to get it published, at first. Victorian readers were not prepared for the truth of the lives of ordinary women, or for a great many truths about themselves that Hardy presents. The use of British history as a hall of mirrors and the jawdropping detail of the landscape of "Wessex" make it the Great English Novel in the way we sometimes refer to MOBY DICK as the Great American Novel, though the works don't otherwise bear comparison. Melville's great white whale is a far punier creation.Hardy's style is like no one else's. It is not snappy, as Dickens can be. It is not fluid and elegant, like George Eliot's. It can feel labored and awkward and more archaic than either. It has no journalistic flavor, but is painfully pure and deliberate and dense, echoing Homer or the language of the Old Testament rather than anything we think of as "modern." Don't start with TESS but with FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, another very beautiful book, where Hardy is at his loosest and wittiest. Once you have the key to his style, then pick up a good edition of TESS with notes, e.g. Penguin, so you get the full richness of all the literary allusions. Hardy's lowly shepherds and farmhands move and breathe in a very ancient literary atmosphere. The effect is not pretentious but timeless. There is wisdom, poetry and majesty here. Tess stumbling through the dark and taking her last rest at Stonehenge will send chills up your spine like no other reading experience. I wonder if anyone can know why there are novels, why we care about them, or what they are capable of, without reading this one.

Its characters, especially Tess herself, are so alive and memorable that they stay in your mind long after you've finished the book. That being said, though, it's also not a novel for the casual reader. This book is so thought-provoking and, ultimately, heartbraking that it can't be easily forgotten, and will more than likely leave you with an overwhelming sadness for a long time afterward. I read a lot, and material with very different subject matters, so I'm not being melodramatic when I say that this book left me extremely choked up, and almost on the verge of tears. For a guy in his mid-20's who never gets emotional, I think that's saying quite a lot. It certainly left me with a lot of respect for the author. The reader comes to care so much about Tess, and agonize over the way her life turns out, that it becomes almost unbearable at times. For a fictional tale to have that effect on a person is quite incredible. Difficult or not, anyone who is interested in reading a brilliant and moving story that deserves to be called a classic should read Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Compellingly sad By Stacey M Jones Recently, my brother and I were discussing the "poverty penalty," the concept that the poor pay more for what they must buy because they have no bargaining power to invite competition, which drives down prices. This is obviously not a new phenomenon, because poor Tess Durbeyfield pays quite a poverty penalty through the course of Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. This is the first novel of Hardy's I have read, but I chose it after reading "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" by Daniel Pool, a fabulous book about 18th century daily life.Hardy's title, as quickly becomes evident, is tongue-in-cheek (he is author of my favorite title of a book, Jude the Obscure, which I haven't yet read) is ironic and mocking. Tess, the lovely and somewhat educated daughter of a cottager in Hardy's British district of Wessex, has the last name of Durbeyfield, but in the first pages of the book, her father, the ne'er-do-well, learns that he is descended from Norman aristocracy, the D'Urbervilles, and there aren't many of them left, except his clan, as the local reverend informs him. He instantly thinks himself very grand and takes it as an excuse to go carousing, which causes Tess and one of her many younger siblings to have to make an early morning journey with the horse for the family's means of making money. Sleeping on the journey, Tess wakes to find the horse impaled in a wreck and killed. Feeling guilty, she agrees to be sent as a poor relation to the Stoke-D'Urbervilles to seek assistance of some kind. (They are "new money" and have bought the name "D'Urberville" to build position for themselves, so they are actually no relation.)There she encounters Alec D'Urberville, who pursues her vigorously, though she repeatedly eschews his attentions. She takes a job for his mother, watching her fowl, but one evening, separated from her friends in the village on the way home from a Saturday night out in the village, Alec stops accepting no for an answer.Later she falls in mutual love with a gentleman (the son of a minister) who has rejected the pulpit himself in favor of learning the trade of dairy farming so that he may run his own farm some day. Angel Clare does fall in love with Tess, but at the same time, he doesn't seem to really know her, or want to... he thinks of her as a pure country maid, and has no idea about her past. When she tries to tell him, he shushes her, thinking he knows all about her. When she finally confides in him after the marriage, the results are disastrous and Tess is once again dealing with harsh reality.I won't recount the rest of the story, but it's clear that the bourgeois (Alec) and the gentry (Angel) have a great deal to do with the pain and hardship of Tess's life; they inflict the poverty penalty on her. The idea of the fluidity of the aristocracy in the 18th century -- Tess is descended from them, but has no rights thereof, Alec has taken the name due to his money, and Angel has rejected the career of his familial role in favor of farming whilst entertaining a very aristocratic (and inaccurate) view of the "peasantry" -- is prominent in the novel, with Tess's inability to care for herself and fulfill her perceived familial goals without resorting to asking for help from those who don't have her bloodline at all. The town of Kingsbere, where Tess's ancestors are said to be buried, figures somewhat in the novel, and one cannot help but think that this symbolizes their use to her as being just as dead as they are. There are some motifs of paganism in the book... Tess meets Angel for the first time at a May dance, a pagan rite, and she has another climactic plot moment at Stonehenge toward the end of the book. Angel himself seems to reject his father's Christian teachings, and the beliefs of Tess and her society are often deemed superstitious or quaint and encompassing of pagan belief systems. Tess often wishes to be free of her life of burdens, and who can blame her? She didn't cause the horse's death that plunged her into this chain of events, and yet she is punished and punished and punished.Hardy's writing is beautiful and engaging. The book, though long, seems to quickly move from event to event, and the author's descriptions are enlightening and complete. I really liked this book and look forward to reading more by Hardy.

Thus I didn’t know what the must visit places are and how to have a good vacation there. This book answered all my questions about Japan, helping me to identify the best places to visit, like the highest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji, and the the Himeji Castle in Osaka. It also helped me to understand the Japanese Culture and some of its traditions. What I like most about this book is that it introduced each city by illustrating what it is famous for and what things you shouldn’t miss when you visit it like the Okonomimura dish in local restaurants of Hiroshima.

  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an 1845 memoir and treatise on abolition written by famous orator and former slave Frederick Douglass. It is generally held to be the most famous of a number of narratives written by former slaves during the same period. In factual detail, the text describes the events of his life and is considered to be one of the most influential pieces of literature to fuel the abolitionist movement of the early 19th century in the United States. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass encompasses eleven chapters that recount Douglass' life as a slave and his ambition to become a free man.

Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass An American Slave: Golden Illustrated Classics (Comes with a Free Audiobook), by Frederick Douglass

From School Library Journal Grade 9 Up-This classic text in both American literature and American history is read by Pete Papageorge with deliberation and simplicity, allowing the author's words to bridge more than 160 years to today's listeners. Following a stirring preface by William Lloyd Garrison (who, nearly 20 years after he first met Douglass, would himself lead the black troops fighting from the North in the Civil War), the not-yet-30-year-old author recounts his life's story, showing effective and evocative use of language as well as unflinchingly examining many aspects of the Peculiar Institution of American Slavery. Douglass attributes his road to freedom as beginning with his being sent from the Maryland plantation of his birth to live in Baltimore as a young boy. There, he learned to read and, more importantly, learned the power of literacy. In early adolescence, he was returned to farm work, suffered abuse at the hands of cruel overseers, and witnessed abuse visited on fellow slaves. He shared his knowledge of reading with a secret "Sunday school" of 40 fellow slaves during his last years of bondage. In his early 20's, he ran away to the North and found refuge among New England abolitionists. Douglass, a reputed orator, combines concrete description of his circumstances with his own emerging analysis of slavery as a condition. This recording makes his rich work available to those who might feel encumbered by the printed page and belongs as an alternative in all school and public library collections.Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CACopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Frederick Douglass was born a slave, denied an education, and expected to work like a beast of the fields until the day he died. But Douglass's mind and spirit could not be imprisoned. As he secretly learned to read and write, Douglass looked ahead to the day he could escape the chains of slavery. Once free, he wrote this classic of American literature. It is a story that shocked the world with its first-hand account of the horror of slavery. --From the Publisher

Review "Having consistently used the book for almost a decade, I can say that it remains the most popular of my required books. The introduction places Douglass in a historical context comprehensible to undergraduates and offers students shrewd insights into how he drafted his autobiography."

Still a moving testimony By Adirondack Views I often believe it is easy to criticize nineteenth century Americans for not stepping up to the plate regarding the issue of slavery and race in America. Jefferson may well have agonized over the issue he called the "death knell of the nation" and which he labeled a "neccessary evil." Certainly he benefitted by the ownership of nearly 300 slaves, but he grew up in a world in which slavery was the norm. It takes a revoutionary and remarkable man to truly stand against the only world he knows and move to create a different world, so I usually defend Jefferson and his political vision which clearly transcended that world.Reading Frederick Douglass, however, makes me wonder how anyone with firsthand knowledge of the institution could not see the obvious pain and cruelty which existed right in front of his or her eyes. Douglass's narrative, and particularly his descriptions of the slave trade in Baltimore and the obvious place of the whip (whether used or not) as the principal vehicle of social control argues most eloquently that though the slave system may have been a social norm, the blinders had to be unbelievably thick not to see the horrors that the institution wrought. The relationship of slave and master perpetuated a most un-American (at least in terms of our professed values--cf. Douglass's later antislavery orations) tyranny and oppression. Douglass's narrative testifies that our ancestors could have seen much more and done much more and that 600,000 lives and a subsequent 120 years of racial schism and pain was too much a price to bear for the peculiar institution.

Roth This fiery autobiography, written as anti-slavery propaganda, told of his struggle to gain freedom, identified his "owner", and became a 19th century national bestseller. Long before Uncle Tom's Cabin opened the eyes of sentimental Northerners to the evils of slavery, Douglass' chronicle inspired the small abolitionist movement and challenged the conscience of the United States to live up to the heroic ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence... "all men are created equal."The publication of this masterpiece also forced Douglass into exile in England for two years to avoid capture by slave traders. British supporters eventually "purchased" Douglass allowing this great American to return to the United States and live in freedom. While the battle against slavery was won almost 150 years ago, this autobiography's remains a very powerful tool against racism, ignorance, and historical amnesia. Douglass links his quest for literacy with his need to be treated as a man - and become a free man. This book should be required reading, for all American schoolchildren, in the middle school and excerpts should be constantly used in high school and college courses. Adult literacy centers should find this story a powerful inspiration too.

I think it is a good book because it describes the harshness of slavery. I also think it is an interesting way to be informed. It is an excellent source of information. It has a vivid description of the work fields and how it feels to see a family member being ruthlessly whipped. It also gives you a feeling you are talking to Frederick himself. It suddenly makes you aware of the relationship between you and him. Everybody probably has a relation with him ranging from skin tones to hardship. We all have at least one if not 2or3 similarities.I think that this book is not for children younger than 9 because it has intense parts about naughty haywire masters. It is for the type of person who likes history . When you are reading this book, you may understand why people started the civil war. I think it made people start the civil war because they read this book and got very angry at slavery. Also I think it made the masters mad. That may have also started the civil warNathaniel age 9

I have been looking around recently for some kind of guide that doesn’t take that ‘cliché’ route that makes you believe that you will miss out if you don’t get to visit certain places in Paris. I think I found something to work with and I am following the guidelines from the book so hopefully I will enjoy my stay in ParisThe author clearly explains what you need before packing and where you should visit depending on your interests and budget. She also offers advice on how to get around easily and how to enjoy the French cuisine regardless of your budget. In addition to this, she also offers updated contacts and links to other resources.

Feeling The Touch Of Paris By Alan Richter Paris is considered by many to be the most romantic city, but I have also heard a lot of people say that Parisians can be really rude. I didn’t really know what to expect from this city and when I had made my plans to visit it, I knew I needed a real book which could prepare me for what I would see.I usually refrain from buying travel books because they are mostly full of facts which I can easily find on the internet. However, ‘Paris’ spoke out to be because it didn’t look to be a run of the mill account.I particularly love the lucidity with which things have been explained in the book. The foreword immediately grasped my attention because it started with the same dilemma that I was facing. The author is in discussion with two people who had a contrasting image of Paris and I knew that I had picked the right book.I have to add that the details present in the book will help you live Paris from the author’s eyes. The book touches every aspect ranging from how to plan your vacation to the history of the place along with other events worth knowing. Further, there is an in-depth mention of food, culture and even how romance is perceived in this city which is known to optimize romance and love. For me, it was a complete guide which gave me a new perspective on the city. I not only had an awesome vacation, but I am now qualified enough to guide someone else for a tour to this European city which deserves to be visited at least once. This book is for everyone who has ever loved Paris, regardless of whether or not you plan to go here. It has personified Paris and it will make you fall in love with the city, even with its imperfection. The book comes with great language, the flow of narration is apt and it comes with the right amount of details as well.

I am going to France next year and as I am planning, I am looking around for advice. This book is written in easy, conversational style, moreover, it is interactive: each chapter has questions you can answer to make your trip more tailored. I sure answered some and found out interesting connections. Like one of the questions is "what would you like to bring back from Paris?" My first response was "scarf", and to my great pleasure the chapter dealing with fashion and style has a few insights on accessories, including scarves. The book is an insight into a unique Paris experience, discussing each aspect of the city in a separate chapter.Back to scarves. The chapter on style gives the reader some tips on how to look like a Frenchwoman (or man), and talks not only about clothes, but about makeup, skin care, perfume and accessories. This is a book worth reading when you are getting ready to visit Paris, when you just came back to Paris, or if you are forever in love with Paris.

How daring is Chiyo prepared to be to keep the American Friendship Doll safe? Inspired by a little-known historical event, this engaging companion to Ship of Dolls is told from a Japanese girl’s point of view. When eleven-year-old Chiyo Tamura is sent from her home in a small Japanese mountain village to a girls’ school in the city of Tsuchiura, she never imagines that she will soon be in Tokyo helping to welcome more than twelve thousand Friendship Dolls from America—including Emily Grace, a gift to her own school. Nor could she dream that she’d have an important role in the crafting of Miss Tokyo, one of fifty-eight Japanese dolls to be sent to America in return. But when an excited Chiyo is asked to be Emily Grace’s official protector, one jealous classmate will stop at nothing to see her fail. How can Chiyo reveal the truth—and restore her own good name? In another heartwarming historical novel, the author of Ship of Dolls revisits the 1926 Friendship Doll exchange, in which teacher-missionary Sidney Gulick organized American children to send thousands of dolls to Japan in hopes of avoiding a future war.

Dolls Of Hope, by Shirley Parenteau

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Set in 1927 Japan, this companion book to Ship of Dolls (Candlewick, 2014) continues with the story of the Friendship Dolls project, an international exchange of dolls intended as a gesture of peace between America and Japan. When 11-year-old Chiyo disobeys her parents and sneaks along on a visit to see her sister's wealthy fiancé, she is sent by him to an exclusive boarding school in the city to learn "poise and dignity." Chiyo misses her rural home and family and struggles with issues of class and economic status at her new school. She is also bullied by Miyamoto, the esteemed daughter of a prestigious military general, who vigorously opposes the doll exchange as a sign of weakness. When Chiyo, Miyamoto, and a few other girls are selected to sing at the doll welcoming ceremony in Tokyo, Miyamoto's bullying escalates, culminating in the destruction of Emily Grace, the American doll meant for their school. When Chiyo is blamed for the incident, her expulsion from school imminent, she runs away seeking help from a master doll maker. The conflict is resolved just a little too tidily. However, readers will find no trouble connecting with Chiyo, an endearing main character who is struggling to find her way in the world while conforming to societal mores and expectations. This work is also a fascinating look at Japanese culture and customs in the 1920s. VERDICT Doll aficionados, those who like boarding school books, and fans of the first title will not be disappointed.—Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library
