With humor and sensitivity, a debut novelist explores the coming of age of a girl caught between two cultures as she finds the courage to forge a new destiny."Miss, will you be my Amiga?" Amiga means "friend" in Spanish, but at the youth center, it meant a lady to take you places. I never asked myself if two people as different as Miss and me could ever really be amigas. When Jacinta Juarez is paired with a rich, famous mentor, she is swept away from the diapers and dishes of her own daily life into a world of new experiences. But crossing la linea into Miss’s world is scary. Half of Jacinta aches for the comfort of Mamá and the familiar safety of the barrio, while the other half longs to embrace a future that offers more than cleaning stuff for white people. When her family is torn apart, Jacinta needs to bring the two halves of herself together to win back everything she's lost. Can she channel the power she’s gained from her mentor and the strength she’s inherited from Mamá to save her shattered home life?

Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco, by Judith Robbins Rose

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Jacinta may not know much about the world outside the barrio, but she knows how to grab a chance with both hands and make it work for her. When a well-known news anchorwoman comes to report on her youth center, Jacinta uses a combination of luck, cunning, and raw emotion to guilt "Miss" into becoming her amiga and mentor. As she and and Miss get closer and come to know each other's families over the next year, they frustrate and learn from one another, and ultimately precipitate a crisis in Jacinta's already fraught life. Miss is also far from perfect, and she struggles openly with professional, personal, and financial issues, but Jacinta's dangers tend to be more immediate—her parents are both undocumented, and her family faces eviction, deportation, and the violence and uncertainty of re-entry. The story is narrated from Jacinta's point of view after the fact, with both additional exposition and regretful foreshadowing. This allows the author a greater range of perspective, but makes Jacinta's experiences less immediate, more told than shown. The plotting is rough and choppy but the characters burn through the page. Jacinta with her fierce neediness, Miss with her irritability, fear, condescension/confusion, and basic decency. It's as pleasurable to watch these characters take one another by surprise as it is horribly anxiety-producing to see them hurt, stumble, insult, and misunderstand nearly every situation requiring contextual awareness. Rose doesn't sugarcoat the hypocrisies and tough realities of the relationship, and of the very real reasons that they mistrust one another. Nearly everyone in the book makes some some pretty serious and unforgivable mistakes, but as flawed humans they are allowed to wear their flaws, to make mature decisions and stupid childish ones. Rather than writing an "issue book," Rose presents characters in crisis, whose stories are personal, rather than broadly representative, and the book is better for it. Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. VERDICT An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

Review Rose presents characters in crisis, whose stories are personal, rather than broadly representative, and the book is better for it. Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—School Library JournalRose convincingly depicts Jacinta’s struggles as she explores aspects of upper-middle-class culture—French and gymnastics lessons, theater and ballet performances—while coping with the instability and grimness of barrio life and desperately missing her mother...A moving portrayal of a girl’s effort to embrace both her Mexican roots and the possibilities of American life, as well as an affecting look at an important contemporary issue.—Publishers WeeklyThis smart debut is a poignant exploration of cultural variations and family ties through the eyes of a lovable and funny narrator. Timely in its look at the plight of undocumented immigrants and their American-born children, it is a story of empowerment against the shadows of life in the barrio.—BooklistJacinta’s story gives readers insight into the world of immigrant families and their difficult lives: the fear of discovery, the poverty, distrust of anyone who is not Mexican.—VOYAI loved "Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco" for its passionate story telling and unflagging integrity. I kept on turning the page thinking there's no way the author can sustain the tension and feeling without resorting to cliches and sentimentality, but somehow she does.—Chicago TribuneA valiant effort that wrestles with important, complex themes.—Kirkus Reviews

With all of the inflammatory rhetoric in the news about illegal immigration, this a great story that humanizes the issue. A really good story with complex characters.

My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed by Peter Raber was purchased as a stocking stuffer for my nephew. He loves it, and perhaps more importantly, his parents and and his aunt and uncle thought it was great. Mr. Raber's humorous story of a little bear who's parents are pretty relatable to a night owl like myself is matched by adorable illustrations that Raber inked himself. I have seen Raber's/Heartdrive Media's other work via their iOS app Pete's Robot. Mr. Raber obviously understands children and has a knack for telling a story - I'd recommend My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed to anyone and everyone.

We received this book as a gift and we're so excited to read it simply because the title is hilarious and such a funny concept! Our son is 9 months old and we read books with him every night. He LOVED this book. Not because he could understand it (we parents loved it because of how fun-loving and silly it is), but because of the fun illustration. He was literally bouncing up and down and waving his hands around while we read it to him. I would HIGHLY recommend this cute children's book. It's different than anything else out there and such a fun read.

Double Mayhem is fast-paced with fun plot twists and vivid character development By Jesster While this could stand alone, it is a sequel which follows evenly from the first book, Double Mayhem, which really should be read first. Double Mayhem is fast-paced with fun plot twists and vivid character development, particularly Doris and Della Jamay. Both return in the sequel, and we learn more about them as they are drawn to New Orleans and ultimately the Caymans to rescue Della Jamay's niece, who has been kidnapped by a sex-slavery ring. The dark arenas of voodoo and sex-trafficking are well balanced with humor and universal family dynamics as Della Jamay, an extremely private, possibly sociopathic, assassin reluctantly invites Doris to spend time with her immediate relations. Fun, escapist reading. Ready for the next one!

I am sold to visiting this wonderful city soon. The night destinations listed are complete with links to their websites, making it easier for a traveler to get more information about the places especially if the book is viewed on a mobile device with an internet connection. It would have been better if the author also included photos of each establishment for easy location.

Deadwood, South Dakota, held a place in the pantheon of frontier hellholes. Even to a man like Wild Bill Hickok, it was the toughest town in the west, a town where only the strongest and most daring could survive. But that’s exactly where Bill had to go, whether he liked it or not. He was sent there by the Pinkerton Agency to investigate reports of stealing at a particularly dangerous mine—dangerous even by Deadwood standards. The mine was guarded by Regulators, vicious hard cases who made sure no one interfered with their plans. Three Pinkerton men had already been killed when Bill went up against the Regulators—and he was determined not to be the fourth! Judd Cole is the pseudonym used by John Edward Ames (who has also written 31 books as Judd Cole including the popular Cheyenne series) lives in New Orleans and has been a fulltime writer since 1986, when he sold his first novel, The Force. Since quitting his job teaching English composition at the University of New Mexico, he has written 83 published books (and six more as a ghostwriter). He has written one nonfiction book, The Real Deadwood, as John Ames. He is also a freelance journalist and has appeared in many national and large urban newspapers, Including The Christian Science Monitor, as well as dozens of Web sites. "More than anybody now writing about that long-ago time and place of the Old West, John Edward Ames most reminds me of my old friend and mentor, Will Henry. I can truly think of no higher compliment to give either man." Terry C. Johnston, author of Winter Rain

It is one of the most unique and reality bending books I have ever read. It has found it's way into my top ten with one reading. It will not be the last time I read it. I'm sure I missed a lot the first time through.

The storylines are well intertwined and will hook you. Being a big Kaufman fan I found the book interesting and well written. Even if you don't know Kaufman the book works as a coming of age tale of friendships and how they can go right and wrong.

By Writer Who Reads I bought this book directly from the publisher, but loved it so much I am compelled to post a review here because I want everyone to read this book.I wasn't an Andy Kaufman fan before, so the reason I picked up this book is because I subscribe to the publisher's newsletter and became intrigued by the author's personal journey of being a cancer survivor, and how writing this book was a transformative experience. So it was the author's personal story that intrigued me, and I'm glad I took a chance on his work.At any rate, this weird book did not disappoint. A trippy fictional road trip story of searching for Andy Kaufman as the protagonist's potential father, it definitely had that Kaufmanesque quality of bending your perception of reality. The book kept me guessing, what is truth?I loved this book so much I'm considering starting a club where I share this book around the world.Though I'm crazy busy...please forgive me if I don't end up having the time. Some day...though...Also, thanks to this book, I am now an Andy Kaufman fan. I will never see an Elvis impersonator the same way again. :)ANDY LIVES!

Elmer and the Flood (Elmer Books), by David McKee

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Elmer, the patchwork elephant, returns for another installment in McKee's popular series. In his latest adventure, a rainstorm has caused Elmer and his herd to be cooped up in a cave for several days. Elmer, growing tired of hearing nothing but "complaints and bad jokes" about the weather from his herd, decides to take a walk in the rain to look for "some peace and quiet." On his walk, he discovers the rain has triggered flooding, which has led to an elephant named Young being trapped on a patch of land now surrounded by water. Elmer uses some clever thinking to rescue Young with help from his herd and the other animals in the jungle but soon finds himself stuck alone on the island instead. However, in a surprise ending, Elmer happily decides to remain on the island until the water subsides in a few days so he can at last get his peace and quiet. Elmer is a likable protagonist, who's resourceful enough to help his friends when they are in trouble and confident enough to stand apart from the herd. McKee's illustrations remain constant and comparable to other entries in the series, and the design of Elmer continues to be cheery, vibrant, and appealing. The humorous conclusion rings true and will be appreciated by those children who value the occasional alone time. VERDICT Another winning entry from the series.—Laura J. Giunta, Garden City Public Library, NY

By Deb Elmer and a wide-eyed herd of elephants were hanging out in a cave. All it had been doing outside was rain, rain, rain, and more rain! There were plenty of “bad jokes and complaints about the weather,” enough so that Elmer simply wanted to get out of that cave. Enough was enough and out he went exclaiming, “I need some peace and quiet.” Elmer really didn’t care if there was rain, rain, and more rain because he needed quiet, quiet, quiet, and more quiet. The rain kept coming down and he passed caves full of animals. There was Zebra, Tiger, Lion, Giraffe, and even Hedgehog.“Come inside, Elmer,” they beckoned to him. “It’s raining!” It sure was, but Elmer needed some quiet and kept on strolling through the rain. The crocodiles were having a grand old time (of course) and so were the ducks, but there were two very worried elephants. They were missing Young elephant and didn’t know what to do. Elmer would keep on looking, but as luck would have it the ducks had spotted Young stranded on an island. Rain, rain, rain had made a mess of things, but would Elmer the patchwork elephant be able to rescue Young before he drowned?Fans of Elmer will certainly love this new addition to the series. Elmer strikes out on his own, tired of all the jokes, seeking a bit of quiet time. Like many children, Elmer found it really hard to stay inside during inclement weather. Some of the animals, those who were water critters, had no problems with the rain. There’s a bit of excitement when Young needs to be rescued, but also a really fun and interesting twist at the end. I do love the little bits of humor in this tale, especially when Elmer meets up with the ducks, who exclaim the weather is lovely. Of course Elmer claims it’s lovely ... “For ducks.” The artwork is typical eye-popping, fun Elmer art, just perfect for young fans. As usual, anything “Elmer” is perfect to read during circle or storytime!ELMER BOOKS:ElmerElmer’s Colors (board book)Elmer and RoseElmer’s Special DayElmer’s ChristmasElmer and the RainbowElmer and the HipposElmer’s First Counting BookElmer’s OppositesElmer and the Birthday QuakeThis book courtesy of the publisher.

This is one of the favorites- talks to personal space, which is hard for young minds to wrap their knowledge base around sometimes- provides talking points for young students in an engaging manner and the length of the story is "just right"- well done again David McKee

To go backpacking around Asia on crutches only three weeks after having surgery to repair a smashed-up foot was, at the least, ill-advised, foolhardy, and a potential recipe for disaster, - if not just plain stupid. As it turns out, the trip proves to be one of Bill and Anita's best adventures ever and just the tonic they needed. Struggling to adapt to the heat, the discomfort, and the problems that come with the new-found disability, they meet a host of wonderful people and are reminded that the world really is filled with love, care and compassion. And while having lots of fun and making marvellous memories, Bill gradually discovers that it's more than just his foot that needed healing.

Every traveler sets out driven by different desires. Some are simply hoping to explore and enjoy the world's wonders, snag some souvenirs, snap some photos and safely return home, with one more pin in the map... this is not a story about them.

There are others, you see... drifters, vagabonds, tramps and hustlers, not to mention runaways, vultures, sex addicts and saints, who creep along the fringe of the backpacker culture, barely noticeable at a glance, never out-numbering the hordes on holiday... except in one legendary locale, where- for a while- the laws of the trail were defied.

This is a celebration of that moment, a tribute to the cast of crazies behind the curtains, and an inquiry into the methods and motivation of the modern traveler.

Do yourself something good - read this book By Titi Bourke This lovely piece of work is both melancholic and awfully funny, the witty and metaphorical language use runs like a thread throughout the story, stimulating one's imagination to a great exten and making it difficult not to keep on thinking about the characters and the plot even after you've finished reading. What makes this book such an exciting read is the fact that it captures the atmosphere in the hostel so well where there are people coming and going every day and so many things happening. Hilarious and even more captivating is the fact the characters, which are described with great attention to detail, really exist and the events really took place. With the cover actually faintly resembling a book i'd find in the university library, this kind of sociological study is the most interesting one i've ever read. The author takes you on a trip, and after you've finished you can't wait to travel again.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent ! By Lukas Firstly, I have to pass a compliment. I have read the book just in a few days (2 or 3 I guess) since it was so interesting. The book is about a "traveler" which tries to find his luck in the big city of Rio de Janeiro. As he is walking through the city in order to find a hostel to rent, he found THE place. The story tells how the hostel project has started and gives you a nice impression of the hostel which is called "Piratas de Ipanema". (Really special place btw, people who have been there will approve...unfortunately doesn't exist anymore)The book really makes you feel going abroad and traveling! It also offers great conversations and great stories of a wide variety of people. In summary, it is a excellent book !

Dear Mr. Franklin,First of all, let me just say that this Assignment is Stupid. You are Dead. Why am I writing a letter to Some dead guy I've never even met? This is the start to a most unlikely pen pal relationship between thirteen-year-old Franklin Isaac Saturday (Ike) and Benjamin Franklin. Before the fateful extra credit assignment that started it all, Ike's life was pretty normal. He was avoiding the popularity contests of middle school, crushing hard on Clare Wanzandae and trying not roll his eyes at his stepfather, Dirk-the-Jerk's lame jokes. But all that changes when, in a successful effort to make Claire Wanzandae laugh, Ike mails his homework assignment to Ben Franklin and he writes back. Soon, things go awry. After Ike has an embarrassing moment of epic proportions in front of Claire involving a playground, non-alcoholic beer, and a lot of kettle corn, Ike decides he needs to find a way to win Claire back. With some help from his new friend, B-Fizzle, can Ike get the girl and make his mark in history?

Two paragraphs in it is clear the author did 0 research on Ben Franklin. A few pages in and you realize his view of the average 7th grader comes from a Disney channel tween program. If you want your child to think stealing beer and sneaking out to meet a girl in 7th grade is what 7th graders do, then by all means let them read this. If you want them to believe the lie that Ben Franklin was a libertine, by all means, have them read this book.

Stephane Kirkland gives an engrossing account of Napoleon III, Baron Haussmann, and one of the greatest transformations of a major city in modern history

Traditionally known as a dirty, congested, and dangerous city, 19th Century Paris, France was transformed in an extraordinary period from 1848 to 1870, when the government launched a huge campaign to build streets, squares, parks, churches, and public buildings. The Louvre Palace was expanded, Notre-Dame Cathedral was restored and the French masterpiece of the Second Empire, the Opéra Garnier, was built. A very large part of what we see when we visit Paris today originates from this short span of twenty-two years.

The vision for the new Nineteenth Century Paris belonged to Napoleon III, who had led a long and difficult climb to absolute power. But his plans faltered until he brought in a civil servant, Georges-Eugène Haussmann, to take charge of the implementation. Heedless of controversy, at tremendous cost, Haussmann pressed ahead with the giant undertaking until, in 1870, his political enemies brought him down, just months before the collapse of the whole regime brought about the end of an era.

Paris Reborn is a must-read for anyone who ever wondered how Paris, the city universally admired as a standard of urban beauty, became what it is.

Paris Reborn: Napoléon III, Baron Haussmann, and the Quest to Build a Modern City, by Stephane Kirkland

From Booklist According to accepted wisdom, it was Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann, who during the reign of Emperor Napoléon III was the emperor’s prefect of the Seine district (which included Paris), who wrested the French capital from its centuries-old squalor and transformed it into the Second Empire showcase of monumental beauty that we know today. Kirkland sees the situation a little differently, preferring to emphasize the importance of the emperor’s own vision for elevating Paris to great heights of beauty and efficiency. In other words, Baron Haussmann actually took his cues from the emperor’s wishes. Consequently, the story that this author tells, infusing a compelling narrative with vibrant information, begins with the advent of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, nephew of the first Emperor Napoléon, into French politics as he gained election to the presidency of the Second Republic. To that office, the junior Napoléon brought not only his distinguished name but also his great ambition for making Paris a capital worthy of French glory. Louis-Napoléon soon declared himself emperor and finally found in Baron Haussmann the man he was looking for, one who was capable of executing the emperor’s grand plan. --Brad Hooper

Review

“In the course of two decades in the mid-nineteenth century, Paris was transformed from a medieval town into a modern city. . . an astonishing makeover, which displaced three hunred and fifty thousand Parisians and razed most of the historic city. . . . Wide-ranging and readable history.” ―The New Yorker

“A fine account of the reconstruction of Paris. . . . Kirkland clearly knows Paris intimately, writes lucid and engaging prose, and is both spirited in his advocacy of Napoleon III and clear-eyed about how he was able to do what he did. . . . In the end Kirkland tells a cautionary tale. While it is an immense pleasure to accompany him as he leads us through the planning and building of the great boulevards, the construction of the Opera House and the reconstruction of the Louvre, it is also sobering to realize that in the process of gaining much, Paris lost much as well, in particular medieval neighborhoods that had profoundly influenced the city's character.” ―Washington Post

“Scrupulously researched . . . Fascinating and highly readable, Paris Reborn is strongly recommended for Francophiles, travelers, and students of urban history and planning.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

“Long before Robert Moses set about sculpting New York City, Baron Haussmann--with the blessings of Napoleon III (the Napoleon's nephew)--transformed Paris from a medieval maze into a modern metropolis. . . . Kirkland is an able navigator of architectural history--vivid descriptions abound, and the evolution of the city's infrastructure, public spaces, and other amenities is a testament to the oft overlooked reign of Napoleon III. Lovers of the City of Light and urban planners alike will find Kirkland's survey illuminating.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Stephane Kirkland succeeds in linking strands of politics and finance, to those of history, art and beauty, with a skill that lends his book a most contemporary cutting edge.” ―Alistair Horne, author of Seven Ages of Paris

“Destined to become a classic . . . Kirkland's authoritative study sparkles with little-known gems . . . un-put-down-able.” ―David Downie, author of Paris, Paris

“In this richly illustrated, broadly researched volume we follow, step by audacious step, as these two men raze neighborhoods, float bond measures, and, through daring, gamesmanship, even corruption, craft the modern City of Light.” ―Penelope Rowlands, author of Paris Was Ours

If you are a lover of Paris and wish to know the story of how it came to resemble the city of our collective dreams, the author has written the definitive work on the subject. If you love history for its own sake, Kirkland dives deep into 19th century politics and comes out with one of the most insightful studies in the English language of any foreign political system. Moreover, if you are looking at the modern predicament of sprawl and peak oil, this book could not be better timed in its detail of how real structural change happens. The language is crisp and exciting, always giving the color of the times along with the technical details of governance and city planning. This book is a tour de force. Bravo to Stephane Kirkland.

Bundy Kirkland's Paris Reborn is a fascinating look at the Second Empire, with revealing portraits of the major players, politics, and policy. However, be warned, this book, ostensibly about the rebuilding of Paris 1850-1870, contains not one single map, illustrating before or after various major transformations. Lots of street names, but nary a single diagram. The book is decorated with endpapers of a Paris map, 1871, but the scale is too small to be of any use in understanding what Haussmann wrought. Hence, if you are not familiar with every street in Paris, old and new, you are lost. I had hoped to find maps, engineering details, and other "impersonal" information, but was disappointed. As a history of movers and shakers, it's fine, but don't expect to learn much about the physical transformation of the city.

It is very interesting, and I am confident that it will enrich my next visit to Paris. Napolean III and Hausmann were visionaries who transformed Paris into the city that the world has come to love. It is a fascinating story of urban planning and architectural design. On the negative side of the ledger, the writing lacks the verve that David McCollough or Steven Ambrose would have brought to the subject. There is an eight-page section with photos, mostly portraits of individuals who played a key role in the redevelopment of Paris. I found myself frequently referring to Google Maps and Google images to see where the new boulevards were placed and to see pictures of monumental buildings and public spaces. It would have been nice to have more graphic content since the subject is so visual in nature. Bottom line: Good but not great.

As a child Pete Armstrong lost his beloved father twice over: first when his father became paralysed following an accident at work, and finally three years later when his father died. As an adult he worked to come to terms with his own grief. As a therapist he also worked with others who were grieving. He thought he knew the territory well, but in time he came to feel that the task of finding meaning and understanding might never be finished. So as an older man he undertook a journey by bicycle across northern England, visiting places linked to his childhood, in order to see what more he could learn about the nature of grief and healing in the face of childhood loss. The journey starts in a gale, but it is in returning to face the feelings which have stayed with him from childhood that he encounters the real storm. To what degree can he find resolution, peace, and reconciliation? Join him on the journey to find out.

I realised half-way through that this eccentric and courageous bike ride is a pilgrimage. I normally associate that word with ‘spiritual’ or ‘religious’ quest, such as the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pete Armstrong’s pilgrimage is ‘psycho-spiritual’: an inner journey to re-connect with his father, who died when he Armstrong was just 9, a search for an inner place which might embrace that terrible loss.It is wonderful to see how Armstrong’s clear intention, his desire to face the pain of his loss, and his ability to shine the light of his awareness on his unfolding inner process, together with the physical act of travelling up hill and down dale, in all weathers, with his trusty bike, enable him to travel hard roads in his psyche, and emerge from dark places with new light of insight, and openness of heart. As I read, I marvelled at the strength and intelligence of the force within Armstrong, which must lie within us all, which leads him to work through difficult feelings to a sense of a great wholeness, and blessedness; the incredible beauty of the healing which can come if we have the courage to face the things that seem to us most difficult. His journey is inspiring, and said to me: “You can do this, if you choose. You can make your journey. It may be hard at times, but it is precisely in riding on through the storm, in deliberately seeking out that which seems most painful, and finding that you can handle it, that the beauty in you can really shine forth.”

Honey is a sweet gift from nature ALL of nature, actually. Honey is linked in a very real way to dandelions, earthworms, mushrooms, the old oak tree and even the blue jays squawking in its branches. Take another look at honey. If you love nature's honey, you are sure to love nature too. How sweet it is! The author fell in love with bees as an amateur beekeeper, and then learned to appreciate flowering plants even ones she once considered weeds as an important nectar source. And then she realized how the plants were connected to insects and soil. A simple but accurate diagram in the back matter explains how bees make honey and also pollinate plants, as well as the role of beneficial insects and decomposers. Also presented are activities and a recipe for children.

If You Love Honey, by Martha Sullivan

Review "If You Love Honey is vibrant and engaging with warm, lifelike, and impressively accurate art that remembers the young audience the book is written for. Parallel sections of text throughout the book effectively lead the reader through the pages. The theme text is repetitive and playful, while the more instructional sections are informative but still easily accessible and interesting to a young audience" --Randy L. Seagraves, Curriculum Coordinator, International Junior Master Gardener Program"If You Love Honey takes its readers on a beautifully illustrated adventure through the intertwining natural world around us. It highlights the work of our bees, linking golden honey on bread to the earthworms crawling underground, and everything in-between. Children will be fascinated by this tale." --Sarah Red-Laird, Bee Girl, Executive Director, American Beekeeping Federation, Kids and Bees Program Director

Nature Connections Featuring Bees and Honey By Annette Lamb IF YOU LOVE HONEY by Martha Sullivan is an amazing informational science picture exploring connections in nature. Each page of the story begins with some variation of “if you love…, then you…”. Readers are taken through a series of connected flora and fauna starting with honey and ending with children at a picnic. Supplemental information on each page describes the importance of each aspect of nature including insects, birds, and soils. In addition to the narrative, readers will enjoy additional information and activities at the end of the book including an I-Spy game; information about pollination and honey; and bee activities. While many science books for children focus on a single topic or gloss over the big picture, this beautifully illustrated picture book manages to pack in dozens of essential science concepts into an engaging narrative.Librarians will find lots of connections to the science curriculum. Use this book to kick off an exploration for each of the creatures in the story.
