A mundane Monday morning for U.S. Senator Jeffrey Daniels takes a drastic turn when he discovers that his son has been kidnapped by a domestic terrorist group. Under the terms of the group’s ransom, Daniels is unable to turn to law enforcement for help out of fear that his son might be killed. In desperation, the senator contacts his brother in law, Seth Matthews, who leads a team of former military, CIA, and FBI personnel who specialize in asset retrieval called The White Knights. But instead of the kidnapping victim being a prince or a random dignitary’s daughter, Matthews must scramble to save his own nephew in a game of high stakes that turns deeply personal for both him and the rest of his team. With explosive action and edge-of-your-seat tension, The Senator’s Choice will leave you breathless and wanting more in the first thrilling novel in this series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's a Bible! Nothing to do w/ the Frozen Movie. By Happy Elf Mom Clearly, the publisher is trying to milk the hysteria surrounding the Frozen movie. It's a Bible, folks. No witches with super-frosty magical powers here! I haven't run across Elsa and her little snowman friend, or anything even vaguely wintry in this book. In fact, I don't think it snowed anywhere in the Bible at all. Lemme know if you find a passage; that would be useful to look at during Christmas time because why not?So that aside, it is a beautiful Bible for all the scripturally unrelated hype. And if you have a little girl who likes snowflakes and wintry stuff and might like a Bible for Christmas? This is your book, right here. It's the International Children's Bible, a full 1312 pages and a hardcover book at that. Hefty. The suggested age range is from seven to ten, but I find it would be suitable for anyone who can read well, perhaps third grade and up. It comes with a tote, which is super-handy if you like bringing your Bible to church.I think calling it a "children's Bible" is not really a fair description. It's true that some passages are explained or simplified, and there is a useful timeline included, but it truly is a Bible worthy of study and contemplation. I received this book for free from BookLook bloggers, but was not required to give a positive review.

By Aleah Helton We received the Frost Bible from Booklookbloggers in exchange for our honest review. Our daughter opened this bible and immediately fell in love. She has been asking for a new bible for months, so this came along at the perfect time. The cover is so attractive to young girls - a beautiful blue with pretty sparkles. The inside offers basic bible verses, just like any other bible. The suggested age range is 7-10, with my daughter being almost 9, it's the perfect fit for her. She was so excited to take this Bible to church and use it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Cover and Great Resources - not associated with the movie By seasons of grace Personally, I really liked this Bible. After reading a few reviews, I was a little leary of getting it. I really wanted to cute Bible for a girl that needed one. She had seen one my daughter had purchased at a yard sale that came with a little bag and wanted one like it.Here's what I like about this Bible:The cover is gorgeous! Sparkly silver snowflakes on a light baby blue background.A bag with a clear front so the glittery cover will show through. (I wouldn't say its the best quality in the world - its made out of that reusable shopping bag fabric)On the inside, some of the pages, such as, the place where you write your name, family tree, and other important stuff are a very pretty purple and blue design. It includes a illustrated timeline from Creation to the death of Christ. It includes pages on How to Pray, How to Study Your Bible, How to Know Jesus Loves Me, Bible Verses to Know, etc..In the back there are maps, names of God, miracles and disciples of JesusIt is written in a version kids can understand - The International Children's VersionThis is what throws people off, "What little girl who has seen the incredibly popular animated wintery movie doesn't want to be transported to a fabulous crystal ice palace?" Naturally, people assume this means that the Bible is associated with the movie Frozen. But the only thing that really would portray that would be the beautiful snowflakes on the cover. I think any parent or daughter would like this Bible if they did not start off with that impression. If they did, then likely they will be disappointed. This Bible is full of great resources for kids. There are life verses to memorize, promises, and even a dictionary. I really liked it. And the girl I gave it to loves it! She was not disappointed, she was thrilled. I think it deserves five starts. If my daughter did not already have one, I would have given it to her!I received this Bible from BookLook bloggers in exchange for my honest opinion. I was in no way required to review it positively.

With clarity and humor, Martin Jenkins and Satoshi Kitamura take readers on a fascinating tour of the history of money. What can take the form of a stone with a hole in the middle, a string of shells, a piece of paper, or a plastic card? The answer is money, of course. But when did we start using it? And why? What does money have to do with writing? And how do taxes and interest work? From the Stone Age to modern banking, this lighthearted and engaging account traces the history of the stuff that makes the world go round.

The History of Money: From Bartering to Banking, by Martin Jenkins

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—This book takes readers on an engaging exploration of the history of money. The journey starts in the Stone Age (Chapter One: "In Which Nobody Has Any Money") and concludes in the Digital Age (Chapter Sixteen: "In Which We Discover That Even When Money Doesn't Disappear, You Still Can't Pin It Down"). Brief chapters feature an easy-to-follow narrative, complemented by Kitamura's gentle, cartoonlike watercolors. The author touches on examples of currency that include shells, clay tokens, clay tablet IOUs, bullion, precious metals, coins, and paper bank notes. He introduces economic concepts, such as taxes, interest, exchange rates, and hyperinflation. Jenkins also incorporates interesting tidbits, such as the fact that in 1946 the value of the Hungarian pengö plummeted nearly hourly. This book encourages critical thinking about the concept of money, the different forms of currency, and concerns about the importance placed on money. For lower grades, David A. Adler's Money Madness (Holiday House, 2009) introduces the history of trade, early forms, and contemporary types of currency.—June Shimonishi, Torrance Public Library, CA

Review This book takes readers on an engaging exploration of the history of money. ... Brief chapters feature an easy-to-follow narrative, complemented by Kitamura’s gentle, cartoonlike watercolors. ... This book encourages critical thinking about the concept of money, the different forms of currency, and concerns about the importance placed on money.—School Library JournalA snappy course in the evolution of exchange. [Jenkins] offers lively explanations... It’s all related in a simple, colloquial style that will keep readers engaged... The text is urged along by the fine illustrations of Kitamura, which sometimes hint at the old Johnny Hart comic strip "B.C.," with its touch of subversive humor. ... A thoughtful and entertaining story of how we got from trading a pig for a sack of rye to "Chapter Fifteen: In which we discover how easy it is for money to disappear."—Kirkus ReviewsAn engaging story it is thanks to Jenkins’s clear, easy-to-read text. ... Jenkins succeeds in presenting challenging ideas, each following naturally from the one before, and includes helpful back matter (an author’s note, bibliography, and an index). Kitamura’s tidy watercolors (spot art and panel illustrations) add humor and help illustrate the concepts. This is not a book for a quick report, but the open format, approachable typeface, and plethora of illustrations make it one a student can read in a single sitting without feeling overwhelmed.—Horn BookThis is not your standard children’s review of the historical shift from barter to currency, with emphasis on exotic media for trade, culminating in our own paper and coinage. Instead, this is a post-2008 financial meltdown essay, broken into short, lively chapters tinged with tart humor, that walks kids through development of money and money-lending. ... A spacious layout and Kitamura’s delightful cartoon vignettes make the dense topics of taxation, interest, and inflation, and international currency valuation less daunting.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksThis cleverly designed picture book uses just the right balance of information and explanation to guide students through both the global history of currency and the application of market pressures on exchange methods. ... Of particular note is the cogent and accessible way Kitamura’s cartoonish drawings help illustrate Jenkins’ discussions of money’s symbolic worth and the ways accounting led to the development of written language. Jenkins’ straightforward, breezy tone and simple examples help make a confounding topic just a little clearer.—BooklistA rich and interesting perspective. ... Anyone who thinks financial discussions cure insomnia will be set straight by this quirky but reasoned book.—Virginian-Pilot

The art is just so-so and the content is OK but I seriously doubt it would really hold a youngster's attention. I approached this from a teacher's point of view (since I taught for 40 years) and asked myself if there is enough material here for a student to do a report using this book. The answer? Only if the child wanted a C grade. If you want a very general account of how money came into use and why this book will work. But for real content you might want to look elsewhere.Book provided by publisher.

By Dad of Divas Martin Jenkins has written a detailed account of the history of our money system from the beginning where goods and services were exchanged to our monetary system today. He began his account with the men and women who were cave dwellers. They relied on the community and the people's expertise in order to survive. It was interesting to note when IOU's came into existence and that the Romans made the first coins which lead to our money system.Martin explains well the idea of inflation and how banking became a system we rely on today also. This is a very good reference book to use if you need details about the history of money. I can see how it could be used with children to develop a unit of discovery about money.*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The History of Money details the evolution of money, from bartering to the currency we're familiar with today. By Young Mensan BookParade As its name suggests, The History of Money details the evolution of money, from bartering to the currency we're familiar with today.I enjoyed this book because it gave many interesting and little-known facts about the origins of money - something that we take for granted in everyday life. For example, a law made by King Eshnunna of Mesopotamia 4,000 years ago stated that if you bit someone's nose you would pay a fine of 1 mina. However, most people didn't make that kind of money: harvesters made 12se or 1,000th of a mina per day, so if you bit someone's nose, you'd have to work for three years straight with no days off just to pay that fine! While we associate coins with currency, coins only began to be used widely starting around 600 BCE. I collect coins from different countries, and time periods - I even have a coin from ancient Rome - so to learn more about them was very appealing. Prior to the time coins were widely minted, people used to barter for goods and services for many years.Later on, around the year 1,000 the Chinese made the first paper money, as it became more expensive for rulers to mint coins. When the Chinese government first produced paper, most of the citizens of China thought it was a bad idea to make paper money. In all, I really enjoyed the facts this book provided and the illustrations in it. I would rate this book 5 stars because it is fun and can teach you about money. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn something new.Review by Young Mensan Evan I., age 10, Greater New York Mensa

A catastrophic biological terrorist attack has struck the United States, bringing about a rabies-like plague that's turning many citizens into creatures that resemble zombies. Further attacks have triggered World War III and left only the prepared and fortunate alive. John Angelite and his family are among them as they bunker down in a hollowed-out space in the mountains, but they choose to leave their safe haven to rescue his niece Maggie and her friends. Simon, an ex-military biologist, grapples with the question of why some zombies are faster, more aggressive, and able to adapt and survive. After a zombie bites one of his family members, Simon races tirelessly to find an answer. The military wants his secrets—supposedly to find a cure—but Simon doubts their intentions. Soon a devastating snowstorm freezes the zombies—giving them the much-needed time they need to take action. But will it be enough, or is it already too late? The Ark of Attrition, the second book in Scott Kotrous’s Ark Series trilogy, is a suspenseful story of the fight for survival against insurmountable odds.

Every scene was exciting and worth the read and re-read. I just could not get enough of each character in this story, all so interesting. You have the weak that proved to be strong when it comes down to the nitty gritty and you have the badass fighters or the disgusting zombies and the a-holes who prey on the weak, freeloaders. Amazing how one story addressed so many things, so many events, so many news worthy situation that unfolded in this tale, simply amazing. Phenomenal, the author included everything in his story that touched the mind of every person out there, thinking about the crisis we are facing and the worries we anticipate will happen eventually and governments myths which turned out to be true. Paranoia or truth, you choose, hmm . . . Just the inner works of each scene from Maggie’s situation and the potheads to her Uncle John and his Ark and the rescue mission to Simon and his son Peter to whom is being hunted. Things unfold and truth be told, only to be put aside because something more deadly will wreck HAVOC upon them once it warms up. Hemp for fuel, super soldier, ooh . . . there’s more to discuss so much more but it would behoove you to read it for yourself. I was so entertained with the precise breathtaking action, the search, the hunt and the attack and rescue recovery. Thank you, best read so far!!! This story can continue on because so much material to go around, especially now I gotta know. I received a free digital download in exchange for an honest review and this is my honest review. He and his son Peter and their neighbors leave their bunker to journey to the lab of a former colleague of Simon's to better stu By Joanne Garbato Ark of Attrition is the second book in the Ark series and is as well written and highly suspenseful as the first. It continues to follow the three main groups of characters in the aftermath of a nuclear/biological war and their fight to survive. It introduces another major group - Major Alec Stevens and his military group from a secret underground facility.John has left the Ark with a specially trained team on a rescue mission to retrieve his niece Maggie and her friends.Simon has been examining and studying the zombies. He and his son Peter and their neighbors leave their bunker to journey to the lab of a former colleague of Simon's to better study the zombies.Maggie and her friends become the victims of a home invasion. The military want Simon and Peter and the secrets they hold. The book ends with a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read Book 3 to see what happens next.Recommended reading.

Interesting, but not as good as the first book By Patricia This was sent to me by the author for an unbiased review -To be honest, I didn't like this one as well as the first in the series. In fact, the first book detailed the construction of an underground facility that would actually house family, employees, and friends with all amenities. The Ark, as it was named, protected people from outside attacks. This current book is a continuing effort to fight the infected and to rescue a relative by the name of Maggie. The ending leaves the story hanging as to the future of the good guys. I found parts of the book good, and other parts a little trite. Toward the end, it became more exciting and then left me hanging. I am curious about the rest of the story.

. Learning how to have reading practice is like learning to try for consuming something that you really don't really want. It will certainly need more times to help. Additionally, it will certainly also little force to offer the food to your mouth and swallow it. Well, as checking out a publication , sometimes, if you ought to review something for your brand-new tasks, you will certainly really feel so lightheaded of it. Even it is a publication like ; it will make you feel so bad.

Cerridwen and Trevly have found support by two men from Hailing on their way to find the mural Cerridwens mother described on her deathbed. Not only adventures await them. They have to race against the party around bewitching Sasha who craves for treasure. She collects men and wants to make them her knights. But she has to fight dark memories. Instead of confronting herself with them, she wants to fill the gaps in her soul with riches.

By Rosalie Skinner Knights in Dark Leather is set in the far distant future of Corn World after the flood that changed the world.Cerridwen and Trevly's search now centers on a ring that will somehow help her change the world, but Sasha and her knights, Aaron and Boris are also keen to find the 'treasure'.As we turn each page the search increases pace and danger seems to lurk around every corner.Knights in Dark Leather continues Edith Parzefall and Francene Stanley's remarkable tale about a search for knowledge, power, wealth and stability in an unstable world, while exploring human experiences and reactions. Each character and 'knight' has their own attributes and flaws that at times help or hinder the respective journeys. Trust, compassion, strength of commitment as well as physical strength v mental acumen, fear and faith are all explored while the travellers' search keeps us rivetted on their progress.Never a dull moment Cerridwen's primitive but future world. Knights in Dark Leather is a terrific continuation of the Higher Ground series.I am impatient to read book three!!

I ampretty sure it would also be enjoyable to anyone who has not read the firstbook in the series. With my failing memory, I'd have been lost without theskillfully integrated background in the first few chapters, whichreintroduces the characters and refreshed the storyline, but without adreaded background dump.Stanley and Parzefall are at least as powerful storytellers as their heroineCerridwen. Their story enthralls the reader, pulling you along on thecharacters' adventures in the Corn World of the future. Like Cerridwen'stales, it provides excellent distraction from any pain and discomfort and anescape from everyday life. Throughout I felt as though I am another memberof the travelers' party. I am impatient for the adventures to continue. The characters are well-rounded and interesting. Some I wish I could meetand others I'm quite happy only to meet in the story, although I can seeaspects of them in the real world. The fantasy elements integrate well andthe world feels complete and comfortable.

As men gather in a final battle that will determine the fate of mankind in a land torn by war, Isaac looks back on the events that led to this pivotal point as he makes his way with an army of men to the Abyss of Rorrah to fight a being with the power of a god.

Born with a gift, unique to a few, known as Anamerians, Isaac learns that he was a counterpoint on events that affected humanity before it happens.

Trained by a patron named Gabram, he is given charge of an elite group of warriors known as Acklans and sent to find three youths that were their hope of stopping an impending war that if not stopped could end in the annihilation of humanity.

In his quest, Isaac finds himself in a small town where everyone was killed by creatures that appear and disappear without a trace. He finds an only survivor in one of these mysterious attacks - a young man named Samuel who managed to escape - and soon they both discovered how tied their fates are to the oncoming battle.

An "action" packed fantasy thriller with great description, power and magic for the imagination By Draegon "The Sliver Arrow" by Larry ItejereAn exciting and action packed fantasy thriller. A couple of young boys, Iseac and Samuel, both with a key in saving the world from the powerful evil. The story development is solid. The author structures the history well, proving a strong foundation of information to help keep you connected and informed. Yet the history is not overwhelming. I liked that I didn't get lost or bogged down. The character construction was very good in that you grew with each of the main characters. I found myself developing sadness at the loss of some of the secondary characters. I became clearly connected to the main characters wanting them to be around for awhile. The story flowed because the sentence structure; grammar and typesetting didn't cause distraction potentially causing disruption or having to reread. The typesetting was excellent in that the font and paragraph structure was easy to read on my device. It didn't require frequent adjusting of the screen. It was consistent. The author was very thorough, which I liked in describing all aspects of the story, the characters, the interactions and landscape descriptions. I was clearly able to imagine and feel I was there.Being a fantasy lover, the amount of magic and magical powers created was to my liking. It was comforted to know there was an relative balance, yet slightly in the favor of good. The only part of the story I didn't like was some of the battles were short. I was able to predict the outcome after several instances. I would have preferred to have been surprised or at least led a little further; left hanging on the chain creating a bit of uncertainty about the result.Overall, I would give this 4.5 out of 5 stars. I am totally looking forward to the next chapter in their quest. If you like fantasy, this story will keep you connected and engaged wanting more.

The main character, Isaac, learns as a young boy of his special gifts. He belongs to a secret group called Anamerians. Creatures have been killing the people in towns and villages, leaving behind charred, concave rings. The empire is in trouble. It is Isaac's duty to find three youths to help him save mankind. He is given a group of guardians or Ackalans to serve him in his daunting task. He meets Samuel, a fellow youth gifted with powers. Their journey brings them closer together.Their enemy is Death's Soul, who was once an innocent youth like them. His name was Sullivan. He touched something that gave him extreme powers and a blood lust to acquire immortality. He seeks the keys to creation and has acquired, according to legend, most of them.Once they are all acquired, he will become immortal and indestructible. He descends upon towns with his followers as balls of fire and leave as quickly as the wind. These legends have the people terrified.Isaac is brave and leads his army with representatives from the Four Kingdoms on his quest to save mankind. There are battles and a love story. There is enough adventure in the book to keep its teen audience happy and interested.

I didn't check the rating on this one, so dove in expecting something written for adults. This is not the case, and once I had adjusted my thinking, the book became much better. This is one of the rare books written specifically for younger readers. Probably around late grade school through middle school. The characters are well written, with enough complexity to make them interesting, but not so complex that the younger reader would be put off. The settings are well crafted, though there is a tad bit of redundancy. Again, for a younger reader, the extra description can help them visualize what is going on better. For an adult reader, the pace may feel a bit like two steps forward, one step back because of the descriptions. The overall story is very well crafted, and even before I approached the writing style with the correct mindset, I was enjoying it. The pace is well set, and flows smoothly between elements and scenes. No obvious jars to kick the reader out of the world being crafted by Larry for this work.Over all, it is a good book for younger readers, and one I wouldn't mind handing to any of my younger cousins.
