In this tale of kindness and giving, a peddler attempts to sell a fine, handcrafted bed, guaranteed to never squeak, to a little man who has no bed at all. The Peddler's Bed, by Lauri Fortino

Review "The Peddler's Bed is a delicious story for children, rich with humor and warm with compassion. A peddler with a fine bed on his cart rode by an old man working in his small garden with his dog, Happy. The man admired the fine bed, which the peddler informed him was for sale. The bed was so sturdily made it would never squeak, the peddler assured the old man. Unfortunately, the old man had not even one penny to give for the fine new bed, though he would have loved to have it. The peddler made him an offer: he could have the bed free if he could find a way to make it squeak by sunset. There followed an amazing series of kindly, sharing actions and events that had the sound of little squeaks always present as the old man proceeded to offer water, a meal, and hospitality to the peddler and his pony. The little old man worked very hard, with well worn, squeaky furniture and tools to make a simple soup supper for the peddler, sharing vegetables from his garden, meat from his larder, and water from his well. The peddler enjoyed every moment of the old man's squeaky, creaky hospitality and kindness. Then he asked if he could rest awhile on the fine bed, which the peddler had gotten down from his wagon to demonstrate. A truly touching ending transpires to this quirky little tale that expresses the core message of kindness and hospitality, sharing what you have with others, no matter how humble or how fine. Splendidly expressive illustrations, lit with clownish joy and humor, enshrine the message of "The Peddler's Bed" for readers of any age."-Midwest Book Review

Who, really, is the peddler in the yellow bow tie?

A little old man is watering his garden when a squeak squeak squeak gets his attention. In the distance on the narrow country road, he sees a peddler driving his cart. The old man's dog, Happy, barks in welcome. The old man notices a beautiful bed on the top of the cart, and the courtly peddler, whose blue tailcoat matches his bowler, is happy to bring it down―but the old man hasn’t any way to pay for it. The peddler makes a bargain: if the old man can make it squeak by the end of the day, it will be his. But the bed is so sturdy it never squeaks, unlike the door of the old man's house, his water pump, a field mouse being chased by Happy, and so on. The old man invites the peddler in for a cup of tea and a bit of conversation, giving the peddler a chance to see the extent of the old man’s humble circumstances. The old man is never able to make the bed squeak, but a little kind trickery from the peddler ensures his peaceful rest. Fortino's subtle story of kindness and courtesy features plenty of read-aloud–friendly repetition and onomatopoeia. Redila's palette has the color and clarity of stained glass, and his figures are slightly exaggerated, suggesting Baum's original Oz.

Lovely. (Picture book. 6-9)

This is the third book I've purchased from them and like Too Many Tables and The Gentleman Bat, The Peddler's Bed did not disappoint. It's a remarkable tale of kindness. I did not expect to tear up at the end. I am very impressed with the publisher's vision for their catalog of stories. I am happy to learn that the illustrator is Filipino like myself who grew up in the Philippines. Please check out all of RGP's titles!

This book is about Grace, an amazing young sensuous woman who learns how to survive this ordeal by adapting and improvising her skills to stay alive. Amazing Grace has nothing to do with religion but there are excerpt that the survivors rely on to gather their strength or faith. The Final Story of the El Nino prediction that has been linked with the arrival of the apocalyptic advent of the undead and zombies in our world. Whether you believe it or not, the havoc or chaos either one of these perfect storms brings to our society is worth reading about as the book is full with information on surviving the weather related disasters and the zombie attacks when such conflicts appear. There are no permanent solutions offered. Some is speculation, others are part of history. Much of the courageous and innovative wisdom comes from life’s experiences and those things these survivors have done in the past. Weather forecasters have predicted a severe and damp El Nino weather conditions, the extreme change in climate and the environmental impacted of the numerous flashfloods helped spread the fear and number of zombies and their lethal virus biting behaviors. We already know that in every disaster, calamity or disorder, zombies seem to appear as much as the plague does and options were given on how to defeat or defend yourself against these flesh eating undead creatures. Zombies, whether they are crawlers, creepers, walkers or mutants, thrive off adverse environmental conditions and attack the non-infected with bites that in turn infects them and multiplies their existence. Remember that victims are often created through circumstances. This storm is a serious disaster maker, which, by the implementation of martial law, causes massive evacuations and produces grave consequences related to flashfloods, mudslides etc. This novel is about numerous violent encounter with zombies under the perfect storms created by the El Nino weather phenomena predicted by forecasters to be the worst since 1998. All the prior written and released book volumes deal with individual cases that accumulatively leads up to the final story. Broken down into volumes so that the reader can break this phenomena up into chapters or series for their own pleasure. Those who believe climate change is real or pending, will be disappointed in the reality of the El Nino. Those who believe in zombies will be appreciative of the tips or hints given to survive such calamity. When all is said, this is a general fiction book with action and drama and sexually explicit scenes. This book is different as it deals with human emotions, sexual desires, violent encounters and all those chaotic events under pressure that deals with the stress, anxiety and other problems related to being attacked by a horde of walkers or water bloated zombies in Southern California during the El Nino produced flashfloods; now lasting longer than the landscape can handle and how stress, loneliness, sexual tension between the survivors impacts their behaviors while trying to find a cure or solution to the challenges at hand. In the end the book comes together as a common problem solver that gives tactics on how to cope with this disaster that destroyed and disrupted the lives of those affected by Mother Nature and the zombie virus.

    From the Back Cover

From a master storyteller of Old West adventures comes this novel of romance and redemption. Zane Grey, author of Riders of the Purple Sage, introduces Hell-Bent Wade, a gunfighter with a shadowy past. Wade arrives at a Colorado homestead where a young woman is being pressured into matrimony. Rancher Bill believes that marriage to Columbine, his foster daughter, will steady his wild and unruly son, Jack. Columbine is torn between her feelings of duty and affection for the old man, who raised her as his own child, and her blossoming love for a young ranch hand, Wilson Moore. Columbine's dilemma seems impossible to resolve—until tragedy, fate, and the mysterious rider intervene.Readers with a taste for classic Westerns will appreciate this story's spirited, well-drawn characters and its evocative descriptions of the frontier's natural beauty.Dover (2014) republication of the edition originally published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1921.See every Dover book in print atwww.doverpublications.com

Entertaining Tale from the Master of Western By ubalu The Mysterious Rider is the story of Columbine, a orphan girl raised by her adoptive father Rancher Bill. Out of feeling obligated to Bill, Columbine agrees to marry his son Jack who is a drunkard, gambler, and coward. But her true love is Wilson Moore, who loves her in return..... But there is one more character with a secret- Columbine's actual father....The master of Western, Zane Grey (1872-1939), brings in romance in his novels, but the insightful way he describes the geography, social customs and practices, the way of life in the West, the American Indian, cowboy, and rancher characters makes the reader so involved. The stories provide not only adventure and entertainment, but the remarkable history of the West.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Classic American writing By Pinto On the surface, this book could be considered dull. But what one must realize, is the era in which this book was written, in the 1920's. For lack of a better way to say it, people, especially children, did not get out much back then. They needed to escape, and thinking of the wild west, was a good a way as any.I found the book very enjoyable. The book is not for children, if for no other reason, it it is not written for them, more for young adults. If you want to read a western about shootouts, and that sort of thing, then this is not your book. But for a good, descriptive drama, that grabs you and makes the pages turn, then this is the book for you.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. wstrnnut By George Banks I found this little gem at a yard sale in southern Oklahoma. It is an earlier Zane Grey work (1921 copyright) but it is well worth the reading. This little green hardback gave me a good contrast between what was written as western fiction then, and what is written now. The title is somewhat misleading in that the mysterious rider is not who you would think it would be. I would highly recommend it for the younger generation, boys or girls.

I have only actually used one sticker thusly, and I put it on the back of my Surface Pro 3. I have noticed some small "bubbles"/indents/ or such and hopefully this is not a sign of weak adhesive properties. I like my stickers to really STICK! So we shall see in the future if these stickers retain their stickiness.

The man reached in his pocket and drew forth several small coins. He threw them on the ground and after they bounced to a stop, the unbelievable happened. The coins began to transform. One folded and refolded like origami into a scorpion the size of a car, the next spun and faded and in its place left a flying creature with glittering eyes and wicked claws. The last erupted into a hulking, dusky beast on two legs carrying a massive stone club. The man signaled with his hand and the creatures closed in… Everything Chance knew about the world has changed. His quiet, peaceful life with his father on their ranch, a lie. The death of his mother, a lie. Even his last name “Clayton” is actually “Mallory.” Not to mention that the fate of every soul on earth now depends on something that fits in the palm of his hand… In one life-altering moment Chance is swept up in an ancient war between those who wish to control life on earth and those who wish to protect it. The War of Coins. Scattered throughout the world there exist a variety of powerful coin-shaped artifacts. From within each coin an avatar can be summoned and controlled by whoever throws the coin – these users are also knows as Wielders. The avatars summoned can be used for evil or benefit, which is also determined by the Wielder. This secret war that has been played out on the landscape of humanity for centuries becomes Chance’s legacy when the nefarious Solomon Drake attacks his home destroying all Chance knows and holds dear. Chance’s father sacrifices himself to save Chance giving him a single coin and making Chance swear to protect it at all costs. Chance is spirited away to the mother he never knew, Alana, a key player in the war siding with those who protect humanity from wielders of diabolical intent. She informs Chance that the coin he has is The Coin of War one of a set of five that if thrown together can unleash The Hammer of the Void – a single, great titan whose powers are such that it would rend the wielder invincible. Solomon is clearly trying to assemble the set and it’s up to her and her team of experts to stop him. Chance is hesitant to join this woman who abandoned him, but more reluctant to disobey his father’s orders to protect The Coin of War. Hence, Chance is introduced to the team: Karl, a weapons man and the best wielder among them. Morgan Lafayette, a young girl whose seemingly bubbly personality betrays her expertise as a wielder of fae-specific coins. Thomas Song, a calm Asian man wise beyond his years and deadly at throwing combo-creature coins. And Mara Coronado, the beautiful guardian of the Coin of Storms, a woman with an astonishing secret and a score to settle with Solomon Drake. The adventure takes the team on an exotic, global scavenger hunt to find the Coins of the Void before Solomon does. They’re one step behind him as their journey leads everywhere from the Amazon to the Himalayas to a small island in Polynesia. The wonders of the secret world of coins unfold before Chance, as do his feelings for his teammate Mara. But greater challenges await him as well – evil mercenaries known as the Banner are hired to seek out and kill. A religious fanatic group known as The Purifiers – devoted to the destruction of coins and wielders – seek to form a tenuous alliance with Alana and the group. But can they be trusted? And ultimately there is more to Solomon’s scheme than the group ever could have imagined. Solomon will put Chance to the ultimate test challenging everything he believes along with his ability to sacrifice for those he loves. The world of Coins is unlike anything ever witnessed – a realm of limitless fantasy, compelling characters and mind-blowing spectacle.

It has characters full of heart, and it's so inventive with its use of coins and fantasy elements. There were so many clever plot twists and puzzles that kept me turning pages. And I was happy to see that the book didn't fall into Rothfuss' trap of just being one long setup for a second book as many fantasy novels do. The story stands on its own with an exciting payoff that is hopefully the first of many stories in this vivid world.

I made two traditional soda breads — Spotted Dog with the delicious flavors of caraway seed and raisins and Kinsale Brown Soda Bread, a dense whole wheat bread made extra special with the addition of some local honey. Monday night’s dinner was accompanied by Spinach with Walnuts, a family favorite dish made a bit more special and Dauphinoise Potatoes, a diet-busting concoction of heavy cream and cheese that was worth every last calorie. I am making Croissant Blueberry Bread Pudding for my book club. While the recipes take center stage in most cookbooks, Favorite Flavors of Ireland also has beautiful photographs and interesting information on Irish culture, food and festivals. Divided by seasons, this cookbook is perfect for the adventurous cook — no special skills required! I loved browsing its pages and creating satisfying food. So if you want to find out more about Ireland and enjoy cooking up tasty treats for friends and family, I recommend you get this book. And if you have a Kindle, it is currently available for only $2.99!Highly recommended.(Thanks to Ambassador International for a review copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

I love that the sections are broken down by seasons By Renee K This is a gorgeous cookbook with full colored photographs of many of the recipes, and of the country of Ireland. This is a softbound book with a 189 pages.I love that the sections are broken down by seasons. I like that they have cooking measurements in both US/Imperial and metric units. Many of the recipes are easy to make. Nothing fancy and most of the ingredients can be found at your local store. The only exception is a few items like using Kerrygold butter, and Irish breakfast bacon. She explains the difference to some of the ingredients. There is also some recommended apples and pears to use. What's inside:IntroductionA Note on the RecipesChapter NO. 1 Spring: AN T-EarrachChapter NO. 2 Summer: AN SamhradhChapter NO. 3 Autumn: AN FomharChapter NO. 4 Winter: AN GeimhreadhGlossaryFood, Drink, Tourism WebsitesIndexA coupon was provided for Kerrygold products. I was able to find Kerrygold at my local health store. I used the coupon for butter and bought some cheese thanks to all the tempting samples they provided. The butter had a much richer flavor than the butter that I already had. There are many recipes I look forward to trying. One I plan on using for Passover: New Season Lamb with Port and Mint Sauce.I made Carrot Cake with Irish Cream Cheese IcingCake:½ cup granulated sugar2/3 cup Sunflower Oil3 large eggs1 cup all-purpose flour1 tsp. baking soda1 tsp. baking powderPinch of salt2 tsp. ground cinnamon½ tsp. ground nutmeg½ tsp. ground cloves1 cup of grated carrots1 cup of chopped walnuts½ cup of sultanas (golden raisins)1 cup crushed pineapple drainedIcing:8 tbsp. unsalted Kerrygold Irish butter, at room temperature4 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature2 tbsp. Irish cream liqueur (I used homemade vanilla)1 cup confectioners’ sugarPreheat oven to 350*. Grease 9 inch round baking pan. Dust with flour, remove the excess. In a large bowl, beat the sugar, oil, and eggs with an electric mixer on medium until smooth. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Add to the oil mixture and beat until combined.Stir in the carrots, raisins, walnuts, and pineapple. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Invert the cake onto a plate. To make the icing mix in a large bowl the butter, cream cheese, Irish Cream liqueur, with an electric mixer on medium until smooth. Gradually mix in the confectioners’ sugar until smooth and fluffy.Spread the icing over the top and sides of the cake. Beautiful & traditional dishes, easy to follow recipes By EpicFehlReader In the past 30 years, Margaret Johnson has taken nearly 70 trips just to Ireland. She's also authored 9 other cookbooks prior to this one. In her introductory essay, Johnson says the inspiration for Favorite Flavors of Ireland was to put together recipes that would answer the questions about her Ireland trips that she's been repeatedly asked for so many years such as What's your favorite dish? or What do you like best about Ireland? While many of the recipes have been previously been featured in other publications, there are also new additions from some of her more recent trips as well as some suggestions from Irish friends. The recipes also feature measurements in both standard and metric. Johnson divides the recipes up by seasons (what's most popular in Spring, Summer, etc..). I thought it was cool that with each section's opening, she also gives details into the customs and traditions of the corresponding Celtic festival for that time of year. For instance, the descriptions of what all goes into the Beltaine celebrations (in the US we know it as May Day but Beltaine runs from April 30-May 1st), Beltaine being, as Johnson explains, "the celebration of growth, fertility, and the early promise of plenty." One common practice is jumping over a fire as a symbol of chasing away the evil spirits of winter ("tine" being Gaelic for "fire").Heads up, the recipes themselves are definitely NOT vegan friendly. There are recipes that could work for vegetarians, as far as the soups, salads, breads and the desserts, and I imagine some of the meat-based recipes could be adapted to be suitable to vegetarian diets. But yeah, the majority of the recipes are pretty heavily meat based. For meat eaters though, there's a nice mix --- she covers everything from chicken to lamb to seafood. It was interesting to learn that Irish bacon has 65% less fat than American varieties! I don't eat a ton of pork products in general but it was cool to learn that just the same. No surprise that there is also a recipe for classic Fish & Chips but I liked that she also included a recipe for making a side of mushy peas. Also -- those rhubarb recipes! I myself am not all that familiar with cooking or baking with rhubarb (though I've eaten it before in pies, jellies, etc.) but those recipes definitely had me curious to get experiment. The majority of the recipes in this collection seem pretty straight-forward, calling for mostly everyday kind of ingredients. I love those kind of down-to-earth cookbooks! And, of course, I like the little nerdy / bookish bits. Each section starts with a quote from classic literature and, as you might imagine, there's also many references to James Joyce and his works throughout the book. It was also neat to learn that brownies (fresh baked brownies -- my food kryptonite! One of them, anyway :-P) were first introduced in Chicago, in the Women's Pavillion at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition.Maybe also worth noting is the fact that several of these recipes call for small amounts of alcohol. Not surprising, considering this is a collection of Irish recipes, but thought I'd mention it for those who prefer to abstain from alcohol as a whole. It's possible that the alcohol could be left out without affecting the recipes too much, but I can't say for sure as I haven't experimented with that myself. Just something to be aware of, though.Good food, easy to follow recipes, lovely photographs. Great addition to your culinary bookshelf, I'd say!FTC Disclaimer: Ambassador International kindly provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions above are entirely my own.

When I look, it disappears. Wait. There it is again, at the cornfield.

    Some movement, some thing.

    But this place is different.

This place is full of secrets. And they won't leave me alone.

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Cameron and his mother have been on the run from Cameron's father for years. His mother's terror is palpable, but Cameron doesn't quite remember what his dad did to cause all this fear. That's not to say that the teen isn't haunted—when their latest move lands them in a creepy old farmhouse, Cameron's nightmares, irritable behavior, and his burgeoning friendship with a dead child who used to live on the farm point to either a sensitivity to the supernatural or a descent into mental illness. As the protagonist becomes more interested in the property's grisly past, he turns a blind eye to the terror and trauma of his own past, to a dangerous end. Cameron's earnest, straightforward narration takes some of the energy out of what should be, detail by detail, a satisfying horror story. It's only through Cameron's chilling phone conversations with his estranged father that readers will get that electric charge. The tone and structure of the novel indicate a younger readership, but the specifics of the story are fairly grim. VERDICT Psychological family horror for those not quite ready for Daniel Kraus's Scowler (Delacorte, 2013).—Beth McIntyre, Madison Public Library, WI

Review "A real page-turner... [The "Dogs"] stayed with me for days, author Allan Stratton having created an unsettled aura the likes of which Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King routinely built into their work, too... Stratton's depiction of setting and characters is masterful, and his ability to create tension and keep readers on edge is equally strong." - Montreal Gazette

This is a ghost story that has some creepiness, but is one of those that you feel good about when everything is finally revealed.Cameron and his mom move around a lot. They are always running from Cameron's dad who seems to not be a nice guy. This final move brings them to the old farmhouse that seems like it needs to be demolished by the way Cameron describes it. Needless to say he's not happy at having to leave his friends behind this last time and has a hard time making friends at the new school. One of the boys he talks to says the place is haunted, a man was killed there by his own guard dogs.Cameron starts seeing things, first just movements here and there. But then, he sees a little boy and starts talking to him. In between thinking he is losing his mind, Cameron starts on a search for the people that used to live there. He gets some information from their landlord that lives on the farm next door. He gets more information in different places. But when he starts acting strange his mom and her new boyfriend wonder if something is happening to him. Is he going crazy like his father?Read this wonderful little book and find out what really happened on the farm and who the ghosts are and how everything comes to a bitter-sweet end.I love the book and I love that creepy house on the cover. :)MY REVIEWS:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1318782353http://melissa413readsalot.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-dogs-by-allan-stratton.html

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Paranormal read By Live Outside I was excited to grab this book at the library the other day as I have heard it was creepy and scary. After reading it, I feel that this novel will appeal to the younger YA crowd than to the older crowd based on its content. I enjoyed the story and I liked how the author told the story. As you move through the novel, the author releases the details slowly and adds them to the storyline, there are no big dumps of information and all the information is pertinent to the novel. As the main character starts to unravel or clarify the information on the mystery he was solving, the author does a fantastic job explaining how everything fits together. I always find it frustrating when I’m reading a novel and as the mystery is getting solved, the author is not clear how the pieces fit together. For a YA novel, Allan Stratton could not have done a better job on making this clearer for his readers. I didn’t find the book as thrilling or as riveting as I expected it to be but the paranormal aspect of the book was wonderful. I am used to the creeper aspect of paranormal activity than the mysterious side which I feel this novel undertook so I feel this toned the novel down in intensity for me. For Cameron sees Jacky, he calls to him and sometimes he answers and other times, he doesn’t but Jacky is a part of Cameron’s life now. Cameron’s dad, he’s not a part of Cameron’s life and that is a choice that Cameron’s mom made as she moves Cameron and herself around, for she fears that he is there….somewhere out there watching and he will be back. The farmhouse seems like a nice place to settle down for a while, it’s remote and yet it’s close to a city. The house has a history and Cameron; he’s bound and determined to find out what it is before he becomes a part of it.

I always imagine Russian history, suggests American writer and veteran expatriate, Jennifer Eremeeva, on a huge, 3D IMAX screen, surround sound booming with a jumbo bucket of popcorn in your lap and huge blue drink at your side. Eremeeva should know: as a former tour guide and Ivy League-educated historian, Eremeeva is adept at making Russia's complex history both entertaining and digestible for non-academics. She strolls expertly but lightly through her material, tracing the winning formula for Russia's effective rulers back to the Tatar Mongols: revealing why Ivan may not have been so Terrible; explaining why Catherine so totally awesome; and asserting that neither Peter the Great nor Stalin would ever tweet anything.

Eremeeva encourages us to peek inside Empress Elizabeth's baroque boudoir; she deconstructs Gorbachev's curiously-split personality, and shows us exactly where the bodies are buried. Eremeeva's unique fusion of humor and history, and inimitable writing style brings the riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma that is Russia into hilarious focus in this compact and highly enjoyable guide to 13 centuries of her history.

Fans of Eremeeva's blogs, columns, and her full-length book, Lenin Lives Next Door: Marriage, Martinis, and Mayhem in Moscow are sure to enjoy this further exploration of Russia's soft and hilarious underbelly. For listeners embarking on a visit to Russia or an exploration of the country's rich literature and culture, Have Personality Disorder, Will Rule Russia offers a succinct, informative, and highly entertaining introduction to the country's complex and expansive history.

By KJ I never thought of history in such a fascinating manner as personality disorders. Now North Korea and a certain red headed candidate are really resonating this way. It's small but pithy and will give me a different perspective when I am in Russia this summer. Thank you for the entertainment and the unique education.

Hart This is definitely worth the read if you're into Russian history/Russian current events. Her theory that most of Russia's "successful rulers" had issues is pretty spot on.She has a good grasp on how Russians have historically viewed their leaders: "Western historians see these aspects of Ivan the Terrible’s character as negative. Foreigners see Ivan as a paranoid, power-hungry lunatic who eliminated his enemies by fear, intimidation, and outright slaughter, but Russians see him as a strong and positive leader. Stalin certainly saw him as a role model, and it is safe to assume that Vladimir Putin has glanced at Ivan’s playbook."She also touches on the current situtations with Ukraine and Crimea, as well as the cheerful Russian acceptance of conspiracy theories because it's the only was to cope.It is pretty funny, especially if you already have a good grasp on Russian history.

By Catherine Mulligan's A.M. 75% of the novel only knows dry-land So for it to be called a tale of the sea is somewhat misleading. For those who want to read the first American author pen the first American novel, this read is for you. I would suggest that you read it slow; it took about 20% of the book before I was in cadence. It would have been easy to say forget it.... but I didn't.... Which meant a lot of re-reading Classic tale of good versus evil.

The Pilot By Robert T Ericson The Pilot is excellent reading for anyone who enjoys history and, in particular the history of the period of the American Revolution. Written by James Fennimore Cooper, author of the Leatherstocking Tales (Last of the Mohicans, et al), The Pilot, while fiction, is detail-authentic insofar as Cooper lived during and experienced that period of history. The Pilot tells the story of rebel American Naval ships and their crews as they actually invade English soil intending to capture and hold prominent British citizens as a negotiating chip in the war. Intertwined is a sub-story of the loves of the young American Naval officers, their struggles, successes and failures as the attempt to rescue their lady-loves and fulfill their strategic mission. The Pilot is an entertaining historical fiction written in the times in which the novel is set.

The early Cooper novels are wonderfully written and so descriptive of the people and how they lived. I love getting the perspective of the Revolutionary War from an author who was so close to it. An interesting and exciting story.

By tom4416 This book is tedious to the extreme, it consists of page after page of narrative with only minimal, and uninteresting, dialogue sprinkled in. The story moves at a snails pace and all I wanted the author to do was get on with the story. I was reminded of James Michener spending ten pages describing a sea of sawgrass in Chesapeake. I wouldn't pick up the sequels for free, it really was that bad and one of the few books that I've ever put down halfway through. Unfortunately, I knew before the never ending prologue was over that this was not going to be a book I'd enjoy. Should have downloaded the free sample first and I would have save a whopping dollar. To make matters worse, this was an inexcusably bad job of editing! I understand that Kindle formatting usually leaves some debris scattered throughout the novel, even when converting big name bestsellers but hardly a page went by when there wasn't some issue with formatting. Even spell and grammar check would have caught many of them so I'm not sure how it all slipped through. It's as if whoever transposed the manuscript to e-format just typed it exactly as it was submitted, warts and all.

This fast paced thriller is a fun romp through a drug cartel with a protagonist and his side kick that are so completely likable that you can't wait to find out what happens next. It goes from one incredible situation to another with Bond-like gizmos and Rambo-like tenacity. I can't wait to read the next one!

A friend recommended this book,"Sound of Shadows" to me... so I tucked it into my carry-on bag before my last trip. The cover wasn't especially inticing, but don't let that stop you... I couldn't put this book down. What a ride! Deke Gannon, the protagonist and an especially likable fellow, is fascinating. The story is wonderfully written and the author, Ned Millis, is a master story writer! Watch out Tom Clancy! Deke Gannon has arrived! Pick this one up... trust me, you won't be disappointed! My only regret is waiting for a sequel...
