Red is 16 and lives with Granny in a cottage in the village, where boarding up the house and hiding during wolftime is a means of survival. Red help's Granny with Granny's baked good business, catering as well as door-to-door (in a basket) sales. Red has a constant internal battle between her wild side and her strict, overprotective upbringing, and the issue of "control" as she discovers she has a hot temper when the "mean girls" push her too far. ("When we learn to control it, we needn't fear it," Rumpelstiltskin says in the series.) She has flashbacks to her 13th year when she recieved her cloak and the nickname "Red." She is plagued by nightmares that she doesn't understand, but the Once Upon a Time fans will recognize them as her wolf side coming. Also, the forest creatures that used to accompany her on her deliveries are suddenly afraid of her once she turns 13. She'll be taller and faster than the others at her school, and witty and strong on the outside, though she has a soft side as well. Red balances the difficult times with Granny at home and the girls at school with an emerging and satisfying romance with Peter.

A fun companion to an addictive show By Moriah Bolyard Review originally posted @ http://feelyourbooks.blogspot.comThis book serves as a companion to the hit TV show all about fairy tale retellings, Once Upon a Time, while giving us a peek into Red's life as a young girl. I haven't rewatched Season 1 in quite a while, so the timing of this book as a refresher was perfect. I remembered loving Red's story in the Enchanted Forest as told on the show, but I had forgotten nearly all of it over these past few years.Red is an empathetic girl whose life is built upon tragedy. Her parents died before she ever got to know them at the claws of a horrible beast which plagues her dreams every month around the time of the full moon (which the villagers refer to as "Wolfstime"). The other girls at school bully her relentlessly for everything from her clothing to her overprotective Granny. Every time she starts to pick herself up and move forward, something always manages to beat her right back down. So, naturally, she has developed a bit of a temper which causes her to make mistakes in her reflexive attempts to fight back. The one small speck of light in her life is her childhood friend, Peter. Their slow-building love is believable for their young ages and the pressures laid upon them by their families. Red has to remember to put her widowed Granny first as there is nobody else in the family alive to help with her baked goods business which requires extra hands for making deliveries, purchasing ingredients, tending to the chickens, and so on. Peter is apprentice to the family blacksmith business with a lot to learn about the trade, keeping him just as busy.Red dreams of someday leaving the village and finally going out into the world, but it doesn't seem like that could ever be a possibility with everything going on at this time in her life.To those who have not yet started watching the show, I'd say this book is perfectly safe to read as far as spoilers go. This book borrows elements from Red's story, but it is detached enough from the "future" so that old and new fans alike can enjoy it. Unfortunately, it leaves off on an incomplete ending, and I can't for the life of me remember if it ends up being resolved in the show. I may be due for another rewatch. One thing I was especially disappointed in was the lack of characters outside the traditional tales of Red Riding Hood. Those familiar with the show may feel let down by the total lack of crossover characters--as was the case with me. Also, I went into this book thinking it was supposed to be directed at a YA audience, but it read a lot more like middle grade. It wasn't bad, and I rarely felt totally bored while reading it. Some parts just felt particularly juvenile and watered down.

The story goes back in flashbacks on how Red received her red cloak and why they must live in fear for a couple days out of a month due to monster wolfs coming out and killing everything in their path. Along the way, Red discovers why Granny is so protective of her and Red finds who she is when things get a little crazy.I found this book to be great in the sense that I watch Once Upon A Time and love to see Red & her Granny bickering in the background and always thought they deserved a bigger part in that series so I'm happy they have a book to tell their story.Thank You to Wendy Toliver for telling this story and I'm looking forward to see if there will be anymore Once Upon A Time series books come out!!I received this book from the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

The Princess and the Foal, by Stacy Gregg

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—A tale based on the real experiences of a Jordanian princess, this girl and horse story has all the classic elements. Seven-year-old Haya loses her mother to a helicopter accident; her father gives her an orphan foal to raise. The foal grows into a talented mare; the girl grows into a feisty horsewoman even in the face of her severe governess, who thinks girls should only be ladylike. At 12, Haya is sent to a British boarding school, where she thrives—until images of the events of 9/11 on TV throw her into a breakdown. A page later she wakes up back home in Jordan, weak but thrilled to be reunited with her horse. Almost immediately, she determines to join the stable team in a traditional and very high stakes competition involving horses; her training for this event is much condensed as she works hard to develop her raw talent quickly. Of course, this being a fairy tale, she leads her team to victory. Much of the story reads like Walter Farley's The Black Stallion—but her breakdown is jarring, unexplained, and confusing. Told in third person until the crisis of the competition day, the book's format then changes to a letter to her mother, italicized and in first person, a disruption in perspective. The connection to the true story of the real but unfamiliar princess the protagonist is based on doesn't give it more substance.—Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston, TX

By southern heritage All though I am not a prepper, this book gives a new type of spin on government take overs and Marshall Law. It's a good read with FYI of being careful who you elect. Right now this is definitely the kind of government we would have should something happen. I like the fact it's not over the top in weirdness.

“It’s in the math. The equation of life which surrounds him. We often jokingly call it the Crane Equation. There is no formula for it, but take a problem, add Jeffery Crane to the equation then stand back and observe the results. Sometimes you sit back and say ‘why didn’t I think of that’ and other times you are amazed with the results. Then you remember he is just a man with a passion for life.”

A Classic Adventure Novel - The Complete Classic - The Four Feathers By A.E.W. Mason - The novel tells the story of a British officer, Harry Faversham, who resigns from his commission in the Royal North Surrey Regiment just after Lord Garnet Wolseley's 1882 expedition to Egypt to suppress the rising of Colonel Ahmed Orabi. He is censured for cowardice by three of his comrades, Captain Trench as well as Lieutenants Castleton and Willoughby, which is signified by their delivery of three white feathers to him. His fiancée, Ethne Eustace, breaks off their engagement and also gives him a white feather. His best friend in the regiment, Captain Durrance, becomes a rival for Ethne. Harry talks with Lieutenant Sutch, a friend of his father, who is an imposing retired general. He questions his own motives, but says he will redeem himself by acts that will convince his critics to take back the feathers. He travels on his own to Egypt and Sudan, where in 1882 Muhammad Ahmed proclaimed himself the Mahdi (Guided One) and raised a Holy War. On 26 January 1885, his Dervish forces captured Khartoum and killed its British governor, General Charles George Gordon. Most of the action over the next six years takes place in the eastern Sudan, where the British and Egyptians held Suakin. Durrance is blinded by sunstroke and invalided. Castleton is reportedly killed at Tamai, where a British square is briefly broken by a Mahdi attack. Harry's first success comes when he recovers lost letters of Gordon. He is aided by a Sudanese Arab, Abou Fatma. Later, disguised as a mad Greek musician, Harry gets imprisoned in Omdurman, where he rescues Captain Trench, who had been captured on a reconnaissance mission. They escape. Learning of his actions, Willoughby and Trench give Ethne the feathers they had taken back from Harry. He returns to England, and sees Ethne for what he thinks is one last time, as she has decided to devote herself to the blind Durrance. But Durrance tells her his blindness is incurable and frees her for Harry. Ethne and Harry wed, and Durrance travels to "the East" as a civilian. The story is rich in characters and subplots, which the filmed versions trim. Some versions have made major changes in the story line. The best-known 1939 version is set at the time of the 1898 campaign and battle of Omdurman, but this is a future event only hinted at in the novel.

From Library Journal Mason's 1902 classic adventure about British army officer Harry Feversham's endeavor to overcome the false label of "coward" is back again in an affordable paperback. Review "Action on every page. Maybe in every paragraph."--Kirkus Reviews on Larry Bond's First Team  "The technothriller has a new ace and his name is Larry Bond."--Tom Clancy "[A] fast-paced, complex thriller." --Publishers Weekly on Larry Bond's First Team: Angels of Wrath

About the Author Alfred Edward Wooley Mason was born in 1865. He was educated at Dulwich College before going up to Oxford University. Once his formal education was completed, Mason went on to become an actor, which had been an ambition since schooldays. He began his writing career with historical fiction, but then moved into the arena of politics, becoming a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry in 1906. However, his love of writing stayed with him and Mason further developed his repertoire and style to incorporate detective fiction, introducing one of the earliest fictional detectives, Inspector Hanaud, the Gallic counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. His detective fiction contains material clues and spontaneity. Throughout the course of his life Mason produced over thirty titles. The most enduring work is ‘The Four Feathers’ which is the most filmed work of any writer in the 20th century, with seven versions in all. There have also been many other films and plays based on his novels, including the Hanaud series. A.E.W. Mason died in 1948.

49 of 50 people found the following review helpful. One of the Greatest Book Forgotten and Misunderstood By Amazon Customer The front cover of the book might lead you to misunderstanding that "Four Feathers" is a book about war; actually, though it deals with the war in the Sudan in late 19th century, the book consists of superb descriptions of complicated psychology found in the hero, the heroine and their mutual friend. "Four Feathers" as a whole is not a book like "She" or "Beau Geste," but it is rather a special kind of romance which could be found only in this era.To disprove his disgrace, the hero Harry Feversham, who quit his regiment just before being sent to the Sudan, decides to go to Africa, disguising himself as a Greek, and firmly is determined to give back three white feathers sent to him as a symbol of his being a coward. One clever touch is given here; his fiancee also added one feather to them, and rejected him in the face before their marriage. Now you think Harry must prove that he does not deserve such an act. And probably, you expect the book to draw you into the world full of adventure. No, you're wrong. There are certainly descriptions of adventure under the sizzling sun of Africa, but you must wait. Before they come, we are introduced to the complex relationship between Harry and other characters that are involved in his action. Various feelings of love, regret, courage, and suspicion, all caused as aftermath of the crucial action of sending white feathers, follow with a surprisingly and deeply psychological insight. Though the story is, as you expect, very melodramatic and sentimental, the characters are well-drawn and convincing, and if not as insightful as Henry James, surely deserves much serious attention. The adventure scenes come in the last third of the book, but the suspense is a little diminished due to the rather hasty ending of the book. (If you want to read a book full of adventure in Africa, I recommend P. C. Wren's "Beau Geste," which I found a gripping tale, too.) Still, the descriptions of the House of Stone, concentration camp of POW, (where the author himself visited after the war ended) are still realistic and shocking, and will haunt your mind after reading, and as an adeventure story too, you won't be disappointed. In short, "Four Feathers" is one of the greatest forgotten bestsellers in the English literature.

The Real Four Feathers - Different Than the Movie Versions By Roger Kennedy This book is full of noble ideas and notions of Victorian honor in the days of the British Empire. Those who come to this book after seeing the 1939 Korda classic, or even the more stark 1979 re-make might be in for a suprise. Even as this review is written yet another cineamtic foray is being planned with a Fall 2002 re-re-make. No doubt 21st century notions of Political Correctness shall be heavy handed on this 19th Century classic.Still, I think readers will be in for a bit of a disappointment here. Not for the book itself which is a sublime piece of writing, a work typical ot the pathos of the time, but because of the lack of action contained therein. This is a pyschological and emotional work. The main charcters have many inner feelings to deal with. The plot moves slowly at times, building to a gradual crescendo typical of Victorian novels of the day before it resolves itself in rapid sequences. The film versions convey the general impression of the book, but there are not big clamatic battles of Omdurman or prison breaks which made the Korda movie such a rousing epic. Here Harry Faversham is very much on his own to resolve his fears and inner emotions, as are his friends. Its good to see a book like this revived, but readers who come to it from the movie theater or video are apt to be suprised at what they find here. Lets hope the find the suprise a pleasant and interesting one. I know I did.

Wonderful read By Jenonthetrain I read this book in anticipation of the Sept. 2002 Shekar Kapur movie of the same title.I found The Four Feathers to be an engrossing character examination, with a bit of action as the background. The romance at the center was a bonus, as was the detailed glimpse of life in Britain at that time, the expectations that men and women held for one another and themselves.I was, however, disappointed by the inaccuracy in the synopsis on the book's back cover and repeated on this website which states that Harry Faversham saves the lives of the three men who gave him the white feathers in order to be redemeed.I'm not sure where the writer of the synopsis came by that idea but it sure doesn't happen like that in the book. Not to spoil the story for you, but Harry proves his bravery in rather more complex ways.I also was pleasantly surprised that much of the book is told from the perspective of Ethne, Harry's beloved. Her struggle to "do the right thing" is just as compelling as Harry's struggle to make up for the one time he didn't.

It's the end of the Reagan years, with Iran-contra still smoldering, and G.H.W. Bush looking like a winner in the ‘88 elections. Rob Price is a Nam vet with attitude who's lost his Wall Street job and takes one with a small obscure government agency. When he smells Mossad and a fellow agent is killed, he disappears himself with a satchel of black money. When he turns whistleblower he finds himself with a corporate tiger by the tail and a Eurasian martial artist girlfriend that other guys envy.

Epstein's Pancake: a political thriller, by Bjarne Rostaing

From the Back Cover EPSTEIN'S PANCAKE is as close to Le Carré as we've got on this side of the Atlantic. It's historical fiction in the form of a highly charged political thriller, set in the political and financial corruption of Iran-contra. Like Ricki Tarr in The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Rob Price is a junior guy who lets his private life get mixed up in his agency work. Then he knows too much and his ethics kick in. The pace is relentless, friends die, and the climax is horrific. This is a harsh, driven tale by an unusual new writer.                       -- MICHAEL SEGEDY, author of A Lethal Partnership, Hampton Road

About the Author Bjarne Rostaing was an editor at the SoHo Weekly News, won a First Place AFI Award for a sports video and worked with Uma Thurman in Kiss Daddy Goodnight. As a sports writer, he exposed the 1984 US Olympic blood doping scandal in Sports Illustrated. His previous books include Breeders (St. Marks Press), Phantom of the Paradise with Brian DePalma (Dell) and Bill Walton's Book of Bicycling (Bantam). He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Closest You Can Get to the Life of a Spy Without Being One! By LuAnn Braley Reagan. HW. Iran-Contra. North. Viet Nam. Wow, those names take me back!I appreciate the fact that sometimes governments have to do things that rank-and-file 'good citizens' might find distasteful. The bitter disappointment comes in when it seems that a (vast?) majority of our representatives (US/World) are in power as much or more for themselves as for their constituents - and are willing to protect or improve their perceived situation - no matter the cost to others!Historical fiction that highlights the lives of ordinary (and extraordinary) folks against a backdrop of a famous event has quickly become a favorite of mine. I can think of no better example of this than Bjarne Rostaing's political thriller, Epstein's Pancake. At first, the title threw me. How could any book with the word 'pancake' in the title be a thriller? Heretofore any book I read whose title included the work 'pancake' usually was something like "101 of the Food Channel's Favorite Pancake Recipes". Epstein isn't even mentioned in the first two-thirds of the story and his pancake doesn't make an entrance until later. And don't even unpack your syrup because there will be no taste-testing today.Actually, the pancake refers to an emerging technology that most of the powers that be in the world were ready to bribe, blackmail, steal or kill to get their hands on - before anyone else.Enter Rob Price, a veteran of the Viet Nam era, who was recruited to be a courier for a small, unnamed (at the time) government agency. (If someone, someday approaches you with the same offer, you better hope your bicycle is heavily armored and has a few weapons caches, because you will not just be transporting packets of information from one spot to another.)The security agencies (aka spies) of several nations are on Rob from almost day one. His brushes with death become closer and closer as the book goes on, and it is only his professional paranoia, make that skills of observation, that keep him alive. What Price endures in the book makes it hard to understand how anyone with a conscience would want to be a spy. The place where you live has to be your little secret. No friends, nor even co-workers can know its location. The people with whom you work are almost certainly 'more' than the public face they present - and you really don't know from one day to the next who might turn on you.All this ethically messy morality of the Iran-Contra era is masterfully written up by Bjarne Rostaing. Having lived through that time, I can honestly say that he pegs the history perfectly. I became more and more intellectually and psychologically involved as the chapter numbers grew, and experienced (nearly) the same emotions Rob did at each adverse event that happened to him.I read a lot of historical fiction and cozy mystery books, where the endings are 99% 'Happily Ever After'. That is not the case in this book, but then life is rarely all hearts and flowers either. This story could easily play out in real life.If you enjoyed the 'Jack Ryan' series of books and movies, or anything with the name 'John le Carre' attached to it, you will enjoy Epstein's Pancake.(Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an objective review.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. his metaphors are original and wonderfully descriptive. Who else would describe a Metro arrival ... By Charles Kelly Bjarne Rostaing has worn some interesting hats. He has been a jazz musician, sports writer, bike shop manager, and recently a novelist -- this is his second one. Born to leftist parents, his politics remain in the vicinity of of Pete Seeger, though he did his military time in Army Intelligence."Epsteins's Pancake" is set in the 1988 election of the first Bush administration, and Rostaing's distaste for the Bush clan is apparent. The book is a first-person narrative by Nam-vet Rob Price, an ordinary sort of guy with an attitude that came with that war. Rob is broke, out of his Wall Street job, and he starts his education in the spook world by accepting an offer from a tough, cynical agency man. Life becomes interesting, an then dangerous for Rob as he finds himself working under assumed names for his little agency, which is not exactly what it seems to be.The "pancake" in question is an artificial intelligence concept created by the eponymous Epstein, being sold to official-maybe agents. Rob is enlisted to handle and pay a French scientist with the key piece, but if it was that simple it wouldn't be much of a story. No matter how he tries to keep his activities under cover, everyone seems to know what he is doing, including Mossad. Everyone that is, except Rob.Rob's life is complicated by a family situation involving an estranged daughter, which adds a few detours, dangers and complications to a life already complicated and precarious. His emotional connection to the daughter he didn't help raise and hasn't seen in years is the kind of detail that makes him more human than just a character on a page.Epstein's Pancake is a conspiracy tale, with a giant corporation lurking off-stage, and Price's role becomes complicated as unexpected complications pile up. He is navigating a dangerous world in which nothing is what it seems to be, and no one is who he or she claims to be. The book leaves most genre works behind with a depth of writing, character development and descriptive passages that almost overwhelm the reader. Rostaing's eye for detail in setting a scene is almost photographic, his metaphors are original and wonderfully descriptive. Who else would describe a Metro arrival as a train, "grumbling into the station?" The scenes all have a flavor of their own. Rostaing spent years in bicycle racing and uses his experience as background, setting a scene at a six-day race in Ghent, and another in a nightmare when he's on the run. This is not a book to knock off in an evening or two. Imbued with and framed by Rostaing's knowledge of the Iran-contra scandal and other illicit espionage activity of the 1980s, the book is rich in real history, and should be read slowly for the atmosphere of the times and the unnerving complexity of the plot. The political implications, the graphic violence, and the carefully created, three-dimensional characters are very convincing, and his major characters have lives outside the plot that give them depth.Yes, it's a spy novel. But no, it is not an ordinary one. It ranks with the best of the genre, and with the best of current fiction in general. Whatever a reader wants from a work of fiction, this one delivers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but he’s good at it By Jill Yesko Bjarne Rostaing is an interesting writer, and I never lose interest in his tales. His first book, Breeders, was about horse racing and race, Epstein’s Pancake is about spooks circa Iran-contra. It has the same black humor, though, and strong characters, and a view from the bottom rather than the top. It’s got what thrillers live on – plot, action, and violence, but it turns the genre on its head.Rob Price is a desperate sour guy who takes an agency job because he has to, but he’s good at it, but another man begins to emerge, quirky and detached, with strong opinions that don’t go with the job. He did a hitch in Nam, and it left a bad taste. The other characters are sharply drawn, and move the book along: a nut-case anti-Semite scientist, a casual jaded boss who likes cocaine, and an estranged daughter who is older than her years and sees through her dad. Also his tailor, whom he can no longer afford, who unexpectedly hooks him up with an old friend and a new jobRostaing doesn’t get his characters from central casting. The figurehead boss of his agency is a classic privileged WASP blowhard, and the real boss is a tough, smart, ambiguous man who gets Price’s respect. His Eurasian martial-artist love interest may be the best, smarter than him in many ways, and she saves his inexperienced butt when he gets in over his head playing Don Quixote with a Texas arms merchant as the windmill. The conflict with that corporation is the core of the book, and entitles Rostaing to call his book A Political Thriller. As he fights it, Rob goes from an unfocused resentful man to a fighting liberal, which is a new type for American thrillers. Smacks of late Le Carré, but the flavor is American. Good reading for a long flight.

Science-obsessed fourth grader Nora has ants all figured out—now she just has to try to understand her fellow humans!   The trouble with ants is . . . . . . people think they’re boring. . . . they are not cuddly. . . . who would ever want them for a pet?   Nora Alpers is using her new notebook to record the behavior of ants. Why? Because they are fascinating! Unfortunately, no one agrees with her. Her mom is not happy about them being in the house, and when Nora brings her ant farm to school for show and tell, her classmates are not very impressed. They are more interested in cat videos, basketball practice, or trying to set a Guinness World Record (although Nora wouldn’t mind that).   Mostly they are distracted by the assignment their teacher Coach Joe has given them—to write a persuasive speech and change people’s minds about something. Will Nora convince her friends that ants are as interesting as she thinks they are? Or will everyone still think of ants as nothing but trouble?   With real science facts, a classroom backdrop, an emphasis on friendship, and appealing black-and-white interior illustrations from artist Katie Kath, The Nora Notebooks is perfect for newly independent readers—especially budding scientists like Nora!—and adults who want to encourage awareness of STEM subjects in young readers.

The Nora Notebooks, Book 1: The Trouble with Ants, by Claudia Mills

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Nora Alpers is not your typical fourth grader. While her classmates enjoy talking about cute, cuddly cats, she is obsessed with facts, especially interesting facts about ants. Nora keeps a notebook in which she writes down all sorts of information about the everyday happenings of ants. Her parents are both scientists and this inspires Nora to study ants in an ant farm in order to write an article about them. She hopes to submit it to a major scientific journal. Unfortunately, none of girls in Nora's class are interested in her aspirations, though her basketball coach, Coach Joe, is a source of encouragement, as well as her friends Mason and Brody. Will Nora find success as a published writer and break the world record for youngest published author of a professional journal? Readers will be drawn into the story by the sincere and realistic characters Mills has created, as well as the pleasing and appealing illustrations found in every chapter. Patrons will be anxiously waiting to find out what the subject of Nora's next notebook will be. VERDICT A solid additional purchase where younger middle grade fiction is needed.—Martha Rico, El Paso ISD, TX

Review “In drily funny writing and b&w illustrations, Mills (the Franklin School Friends series) and Kath capture Nora’s delightful enterprising and willingness to push the boundaries—sometimes (she knows the limit when it comes to sitting with the boys at lunch). Nora’s genuine love for ants will resonate with children who have a passion for something out of the ordinary.” —Publishers Weekly starred review   “Readers will be drawn into the story by the sincere and realistic characters Mills has created, as well as the pleasing and appealing illustrations found in every chapter.” —School Library Journal   “The bright and charming Nora . . . displays independent thought, vision, and passion, while letting the reader know . . . that science is unassailably cool.” —Booklist   “Middle-grade readers will hope for more Nora Notebooks, soon.” —Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Claudia Mills is the author of over fifty books for young readers. She does not personally keep an ant farm, but she does have a cat, Snickers, with whom she curls up on her couch at home in Boulder, Colorado, drinking hot chocolate and writing.

Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club. com By Cynthia Hudson Nora Alpers likes making observations and collecting facts, particularly about the ants in her ant farm. As a budding scientist, she knows that facts can be used to draw logical conclusions. Nora is happy to help her friends take care of their dog or watch her classmate’s cat videos, but she’d really like to get more people interested in ants.Ants aren’t the only things Nora is good at observing. She notices that two of her classmates argue a lot but seem to secretly like each other. She sees that some girls in her fourth-grade class are more interested in boys, clothes, and tea parties than others. And she learns from a school assignment that persuasive arguments can get people to change their minds.Claudia Mills has created an inspiring heroine in her debut book for The Nora Notebooks series, The Trouble With Ants. Nora is thoughtful, inquisitive, creative, and she is engaged with people and the world around her. She’s a good friend, even when her friends are into things that don’t interest her. Nora’s love of science, and her observations about girls and women in science, are good issues to discuss. They may also inspire girls to look at science a little differently than they did before. The Trouble With Ants is a great start for a promising series. I highly recommend it for readers aged 8 to 12.The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A girl protagonist who is passionate about science By Janet Hamilton Summary: Nora’s parents and two older siblings are all scientists, and Nora knows that she is going to grow up to be a scientist, too. Her field of study is ants, and she keeps careful notes on her ant farm. Some of her friends think ants are gross, but this doesn’t deter Nora from continuing her studies. One of her experiments proves so interesting that she decides to write up her results and send them to Nature. A few weeks later, she gets a kindly rejection letter, which makes her consider giving up on her ants forever. Fortunately, a school assignment results in her writing a persuasive essay about girls studying science, her teacher sends it to the local paper, and Nora becomes a published author at last. Grades 2-5.Pros: It’s refreshing to find a girl protagonist who is passionate about science, while at the same time enjoying basketball and a large group of friends. Fans of Judy Blume or Megan McDonald will want to get acquainted with Nora.Cons: This is one of those books that you know kids would enjoy, but that lacks a flashy hook to get them to pick it up.

By Jeannette Tanaka This was a fun book, filled with diverse characters and entertaining yet real situations young readers will themselves encounter in school. Mills does an excellent job of portraying a variety of kids with a variety of beliefs and interests, without characterizing any of them as petty or ridiculous. All of the kids, even the ones Nora doesn't see eye to eye with, in the end are portrayed as valid in their own way. This is a great book to encourage kids to follow their passion--whatever that passion is, and will be especially loved by girls who want to pursue paths other than the "popular" one.

Stay! A Top Dog Story, by Alex Latimer

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Ben thinks that Buster is "the best dog in the whole world," but illustrations tell another story. When his parents decide to go on a vacation and leave Buster with Grandpa, Ben writes and draws many notes to let Grandpa know about Buster's needs and preferences, such as "Belly tickles, dog biscuits with peanut butter [and] sleeping on Dad's pillow." While on vacation Ben sends postcards for further information. Fluent readers will enjoy reading the notes, looking at the postcards, and deciphering some notes, which are partially concealed. The engaging images are bold and energetic with lots of detail. While Ben is away, Grandpa begins to train Buster and readers will enjoy seeing the results. VERDICT A wonderful follow-up to Charise Mericle Harper's Henry's Heart (Holt, 2011) and a great companion to Mark Teague's Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School (Scholastic, 2002)—and a welcome addition to most picture book collections.—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

Review "Kid-friendly and full of action and gentle suspense, this selection will be a favorite of dog lovers and reluctant readers alike" ----Kirkus Reviews"...a funny take on loving an 'exhausting' dog, and the way that training can help make big strides with its behavior. Most of the time." ----Publishers Weekly

By Grateful Grandma Stay! is a wonderful book with great illustrations and a lesson for children who want or have a dog. This is the story of Ben's dog, Buster. You don't really need to own a dog to understand this, but if you do have one, then this is even better. Buster has not been trained and the family is tired of the stunts he pulls so, when they do on vacation, they leave him home with grandpa. Ben is worried that grandpa will not know how to take care of Buster and he talks to his dad. Dad tells him to write notes to grandpa. This is where the cute begins. The notes Ben writes and later the postcards are a list of all his faults and misadventures. When grandpa and Buster have a misadventure, he decided it is time to train Buster. When Ben comes home, grandpa shows him what to do to make Buster listen and of course, the next vacation the family takes, Buster gets to go.This is a good story for showing that dogs need to be trained, just like people need to learn manners and skills. No dog is bad, just poorly trained. This could be a good story for showing children how much responsibility is involved in owning a dog, and how important that training is, as well as keeping up with that training. The art work is wonderful filled with detail and expression as well as vibrant colours. I loved how Alex Latimer was able to show the anxiety Ben felt when leaving his best friend with grandpa. A delightful story that I highly recommend.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

When it's time to go on vacation, though, Ben's parents decide that Buster won't be coming along. He gets to stay with Grampa for the week. Ben is quite concerned about Buster's care, and leaves lots of notes for Grampa, as well as sending postcards from vacation with tips and reminders. The one thing Ben forgot: Don't take Buster to the post office! After their visit to the post office, Grampa decides that Buster could use some training. By the time Ben gets back from vacation, Buster has learned a few lessons from Grampa. Ben's parents even let him go on the next vacation.Latimer's illustrations are colorful and fun. Several of the pages feature Ben's artwork and notes to Grampa, adding variety and interest. I think just about any dog owner can relate to Ben. Dogs are fun, but can be a pain when the tear things up. Even when they tear things up, we can't help but love them! Stay! is "A Top Dog Story." Maybe we'll hear more from this "top dog" in future stories! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

When Ben's parents decide to go on vacation, they remember their last trip with Buster. This time, Buster has to stay with Grampa. Ben makes sure to leave Grampa plenty of notes about Buster, and he sends postcards from the trip to tell him more. In the end, Grampa found a way to help Buster become a great dog... most of the time.I have said it before, but I love this author/illustrator. The stories are cute but still teach a lesson. The illustrations are clean (even when the story is messy!) In this tale, you knew something was going to happen. Ben kept trying to remember the big thing he was forgetting. In the end, there is a great lesson on dog care. This one has too much going on with the letters to share in story time, but it is still an awesome book. Kids will like all the antics Buster gets into, and parents will love the story about the importance of training your dog. It's definitely a win!Free ARC provided through NetGalley for an honest review.

A fascinating read though dark and disturbing at times By Siobhan Davis Valoria (not her real name) and her sister Lena are kidnapped and taken to a mysterious island where the rich and powerful rule supreme. If you are not one of the elite you are either a slave or a recruit/warrior. Valoria doesn't know where her sister is so she makes a deal with her captor Dominus and becomes his most prized warrior possession.I was intrigued when I read the premise and couldn't resist requesting a review copy, even though I hoped it wouldn't be too gruesome. The themes are dark and twisted but not too graphic, thank God; I would not have had the disposition to read it otherwise. The elite are disgustingly depraved and most of their actions were totally deplorable. Valoria was a great MC. She had to make some very tough choices, but her sole motivation was her desire to find and rescue her little sister. She tried hard to hold onto her sanity, her conscience, and her humanity. Not an easy task in a world without morality. At first I struggled to visualize the world and I was a little confused as to what was going on - was it all a fantasy or an actual real place? As the story progressed, it was made clear that it was an actual place, hidden from society at large, where the rich could indulge their sick fantasies. The scary thing is I don't think this is beyond the realm of plausibility. (Shivering profusely.)The author keeps us guessing over Alexior and his real agenda - was he a friend or a foe? Initially, I thought Camille had a dual agenda as she told Valoria that Dominus had bought her sister when that wasn't the case. But it all made sense in the end. Character development is strong and there are some very decent secondary characters. The first half of the book dragged a little in parts and I found myself skimming but the second half more than made up for that, and I really enjoyed the last few chapters in particular. The very end felt rushed and I would have liked more of a glimpse into the future - I can't imagine the trauma and stress of having lived through an experience like that and I wonder how the characters adjusted. The writing was very good and overall this was an enjoyable read. Thanks to the author and Inkslinger PR for providing a review copy in exchange for my honest review. Her only concern is finding what has happened to her little sister and trying to get back to her so she tries to be bought from the person she thinks has her sister. After the bidding Valoria is taken to a private island owned by the rich and sadistic. For a price those in charge can get their darkest desires, they hunt humans for game, attend gladiator-style fights, or participate in elaborate orgies all within a cosplay environment of ancient times. Valoria finds herself fighting to the death to try to buy her freedom off the island and save her sister.Vanquished came with the warning that it was for mature audiences only and it certainly needed that label. A new twist on human trafficking where people are taken from their lives and tossed into living in a hellish environment all for the enjoyment of the rich. It wasn't too overly graphic but there is a lot of sex and violence in it despite not being overly described. The entire read is action packed from start to finish as Valoria has to fight for her life and the life of her little sister right from the start. What it really could have used to help the story out though was a bit better world building within the story. Having the main character wake up and immediately be tossed into this world it almost felt like a dystopian or fantasy read but is actually set in the real world but the island is like one giant role playing area, this could have been explained a bit better in the book early on.Overall, a pretty twisted, action packed, page turner following a strong female fighting to survive a world that defies imagination.I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A Riveting and Interesting Book, but Fair-Warning: it's Quite Dark By Sam Short Version: Vanquished is a suspenseful book, and stands out as having an original plot. There are many moments of cruelty that make the book feel ''heavy'' at times. All in, though, the story moves quickly, the characters are compelling, and the darkness makes the reader feel more attached to the protagonists. If you're looking for a captivating book and are OK with it being set in a truly abhorrent world, read this one!More details: As many of the reviews explain, Vanquished has a dark plot and setting. The book is filled with moments of rampant cruelty and disregard for the value of human life, and at times I wanted to put the book down for a few moments to take a deep breath before continuing. However, this cruelty does not read as if written for the sake of writing about cruelty, or as if written so that the book ends up being for mature readers. Instead, it draws the reader into the book and provokes an emotional reaction. You'll feel attached to the protagonists, believe in them, and truly hope for their success. In short, the setting may be dark, but Green uses it to quickly pull readers into the story and to create an emotional attachment to it.The plot itself is suspenseful, and it's the kind of book that you might finish in a day. While the gist of it (good people in an evil world) is typical of the genre, the story itself is original. It's absolutely not just another hunger games rip-off, and the world it's set in is unlike any I'd previously read about. There were a few small parts of the book that I found disappointing. Mostly, some of the plot around the main romance was relatively predicable and bland. However, the romance plays a very minor part in the book, and a predictable romance is certainly better than a surprise romance that seems forced. Given the nature of the book, I think it's very appropriate that the romance was secondary, and perhaps the blandness comes because the romance was too-foreshadowed. Still, this is a pretty petty complaint given the rest of the book. All in, I'd strongly recommend this book for mature YA readers. If you're looking for a book that's just light and fun, or that's all about romance, then this probably isn't the book for you. If, however, you're looking for an engaging, suspenseful, and original book that will grip you emotionally, then definitely read it!
