Further Off The Map: Fifty-Three Tales of Adventure Along the Rougher Edges of American Wilderness (Off The Map Adventures) (Volume 2), by Bryan Snyder

Review Recently I came across a book byBryan Snyder titled Further Off the Mapthat would make the perfect Christmas present for those of you who love theoutdoors, especially places well off the beaten path. The book is easy reading,a series of 53 stories covering the past four years of Bryan's life, each takingyou into some of the wildest places in the western states. If there is a commontheme running through the book, it is his desire to share his sense ofadventure and to push himself to the limit in the process of discovering who heis and ultimately what life is all about. As you read through Bryan'sadventures scaling 14,000-foot pinnacles, sliding down rock-strewn chutes inRocky Mountain National Park or searching for the perfect hot springs, you begin to develop a sense of thisdis-ordinary character who'd rather be out on the edge challenging himself, pushing the limits of both time and distance. Further Off the Map is storytelling at its best. Bryan writes witha richness and depth that sucks you in. Before long you'll feel almost like acompanion along on the journey, sharing his misfortunes and celebrating hisescapes from situations almost certain to end in disaster.A self-described"environmental science teacher and professional generator of ill-conceivedplans," Bryan Snyder has a style of writing that will captivate you as you readalong. There is a self-effacing tone and humorous quality to the stories that impartan uplifting feeling to the adventures, even when the author is staring deathin the face.  Beprepared to sit back and enjoy Snyder's fifty-plus tales as he immerses you ina series of great misadventures throughout the western states.- Ray Ford, The Santa Barbara Independent

In this excellent anthology of adventures By Amazon Customer In this excellent anthology of adventures, we follow author Bryan Snyder through adventure-catastrophes of his own creation and come to understand his love for wildness in all its natural and artistic forms. His stories always communicate a part of his passion, a part of himself, and leave the reader nothing short of inspired. Snyder has a genuine flair for the craft and love of what he does. Highly recommended.

This is an awesome read from someone who’s obviously a consummate traveler By Robert Grant This is an awesome read from someone who’s obviously a consummate traveler. I’ve found a lot of the first-person travel/adventure memoir genre to be full of bluster. This book has plenty of danger and suspense without the posturing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Digestible Adventures By Jason Milligan These stories are more than disasters of the week. Each chapter is an eloquently written snapshot of one of the author's adventures—a condensed and digestible travelogue. Bryan throws the reader into the middle of each situation, lets you enjoy it for a few pages with him, and then moves on. No unnecessary buildup or background, just the core moments of an unique experience. Stuck at home and want to take a few minutes to pretend you’re on top of a mountain somewhere in the Rockies or at Burning Man or on the side of a road witnessing a terrible car crash, you can pick up his book, flip to one of the chapters, read it, and have that experience in a few minutes.

A one-way journey to Mars may be a mistake. Welcome to the first book of the On Mars series, a story of our near-future. Before you volunteer to settle on Mars, read Emma's struggle to slip the bonds of Earth and survive on a hostile planet. There are eight settlers on Mars until the colony's psychologist walks out an airlock to die on the cold, airless sands. Emma and her crewmates, the next mission of settlers, launch from Spaceport America despite the tragedy and despite their own misgivings. They take a tabby kitten with them, as requested by the survivors on Mars, and hope to revive the shocked colony. Emma leaves everything she knows behind, including a sometimes-boyfriend who's dropped from the next mission - all for a chance to explore the Martian surface in her robotic walkabout suit. Her arrival on Mars isn't welcomed by all the colonists, and the mission loses more lives and vital supplies in a crash landing that may not be an accident. Crippled by an inexplicable sense of desolation, they face an unforgiving planet and even Earth may hold danger. The question isn't if the colonists will explore, but if they'll survive at all.

Glory on Mars: Colonization Book 1 (Volume 1), by Kate Rauner

Review "The book is filled with wonderful descriptions of science and technology that will be required for space travel, building a colony on Mars, and exploring. It also has colorful descriptions of emotions experienced by the settlers. Frustration and anger show up more frequently than fear and joy. There are instances of satisfaction when something new is accomplished. I particularly liked the fact that the botanist is proud to show off her new cannabis plants; she had brought the seeds with the intention of using the plants to make a soothing tea for times when there is excess stress... The cat often shows up to entertain by chasing bits of material floating around, scratching the fingers of settlers playing with him (no "cat scratch fever," I assume) swiping at the tilapia that are being grown in a tank, and just acting like a cat in general."There are also moments of tenderness and hints of romance. The women have chips implanted to prevent pregnancy unless they chose to deactivate them. There is no sex described, but embryos have been transported to mars that can be used when it is time to begin populating the colony with children." Farrel D. Hobbs

From the Author Mars is becoming a real place for us Earthers. Our satellites circle the planet and our rovers explore the surface. Private organizations are seriously planning human missions - especially one-way colonization missions. Mars-One, The Mars Society, and SpaceX are all taking serious aim at placing humans on Mars - permanently - in our lifetimes.I couldn't ignore this opportunity to take science fiction to Mars - to the real Mars we know more about every day. I'm fascinated - what will it be like to be the first colonists? Why do they go? Given the shrinking concentration span of the media and popular culture, what will happen when Earth stops supporting the colony? Even the groups planning one-way missions don't seem to talk much about the long-term - how will a colony be able to expand, raise children, and make Mars their home? I give my colony some robotic and Artificial Intelligence technologies that are not yet on-the-shelf, but their survival is still tenuous.I think Mars will be very difficult to colonize, but humans persevere and build their lives wherever they find themselves. Despite dangers from other people and the hostile planet. Read the On Mars series, starting with Glory on Mars, to join them.

From the Back Cover A one-way journey to Mars may be a mistake. Colonization of Mars is in trouble when the colony psychologist, one of the first settlers, commits suicide. Four more settlers arrive bringing hope - and a cat. But Mars is a hostile planet, danger from Earth follows them, and an inexplicable sense of desolation cripples their efforts.Read this first book in the On Mars series to discover if humans can survive on Mars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. probably best described as Hard Science Fiction By BRIAN HENRY DINGLE Glory on Mars Kate Rauner ISBN: 9781310462115This book is Science Fiction, probably best described as Hard Science Fiction, and contains a small section on Speculative MedicineThe Story: The main story centers centers Emma, a scientist and robotics expert who is part os a staged colonization of Mars. Much of the book is a description of the problems involved in setting up a self-sufficient colony in terms of heat, power, shelter, transportation and food, as well as planning for population expansion. It is the hope that the colony will provide a stepping stone to the rest of the solar system, and space in general.Several sub-plots involve dangers faced by the colonists because of human criminal interference and natural disaster, as well as some minor relationship conflicts.Technical: The book is well constructed with very few technical problems, largely occasional typographical errors which were quite rare. There was nothing here to distract the reader. On rare occasion, attribution of dialog was ambiguous. Nevertheless, the dialog was realistic, often a difficult accomplishment for any author. There were some interesting internal links to media, poetry, explanations of material in the book that was not necessary to the flow of the book and so left ‘optional.Style. This is Hard Science Fiction, not Fantasy, and the author has taken pains to discuss various problems facing the colonists with reference to real science, planetology, atmospheric conditions. Nowhere did I find any magic or fantasy, but every unusual and interesting feature, and many are described, appears to be based in science.Ms. Rauner is a retired engineer with experience in America’s nuclear complex. She demonstrates authority in the science context of her writing. The description of problems in colony development is fascinating, although may cater to a certain segment of audience with a background and interest. It does not require extensive education in science, but it certainly requires interest. If the book falls down at all, it will be in the eyes of the beholder, that character and relationship development takes a back seat to the world ‘building,’ really world ‘description,’ because Ms. Rauner tries very hard to remain true to reality. And I missed the opportunity to name the cat ‘Glory’, but to my knowledge, the cat was never named.Speculative Medicine. https://drbriandingle.wordpress.com This, of course, is my interest, and one of the reasons for reviewing this book. There are references to the realistic risk of radiation damage because of lack of geomagnetic fields and atmosphere on Mars, particularly during solar flares.“Cancer wasn’t much of a problem on Earth anymore,” is a quote from one of her appendices and Emma relies on this knowledge, although never has to apply it during the story. Nanoparticles which grip each malignant cell individually (targeted therapy?), that help to discover single cells in the human body and irradiate them using radio frequency ablation (Kanzius effect) is not so far-fetched as you might think, given that current science is investigating detection of circulating cancer cells and single cell imaging, and bulk (although not single cell) radio frequency ablation is a well-established currently.Of course, we already have targeted therapy such as cell-lethal medications linked biochemically to monoclonal antibodies (magic bullets) which attack individual cells, so this too is not so far-fetched.I enjoyed this book very much. I was reminded often of Kim Stanley Robinson and his Mars series, which I mean as a compliment in the best possible way.I would give this book 4.6

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Hard Sci-Fi But Don't Expect Much from the Cat By Marcha Fox If you're a fan of hard science fiction, and I mean really HARD, then you will love this book. In fact, I'm inclined to say that it's only on the borderline of sci-fi, that it's more what I would call science faction, i.e. so close to being reality that it's not even that futuristic. Indeed, many people reading this book are likely to live to see a Mars colony in their lifetime. If you loved the movie "The Martian" then this story is a great follow-up to keep your imagination well-grounded on the Red Planet. The Mars base the author designed is brilliant. She has thought of just about everything imaginable and described it at a technical level detailed enough to make you feel as if you're there. She has hab modules, jumpships, walkabouts, surface suits and any number of other goodies. At the least, you know she's not just making this up but her engineering background truly shows. Since I worked as a NASA contractor for over 20 years I found many familiar things in this story, from the space technological presence in Noordwick, The Netherlands, since I'd been there more than once, and other terminology such as "frangible nuts" used with explosive to release their hold on various spacecraft.By the time you finish this story, you feel as if you've completed a tour of duty on Mars. Anyone who may aspire to go there someday can get a very sound idea of what it would be like, from eating worms to the various hazards that abound on a planet that is not fit for human habitation without serious, technical intervention. There are radiation issues, maintaining an appropriate pressurized volume with the correct oxygen mixture, psychological issues, vehicles for getting around on the surface, sometimes at a great distance, and so forth. In this respect it is exceptionally well-done. The author's knowledge and undoubtedly a whole lot of research is evident and available for readers to enjoy. The side stories were excellent as well, adding additional detail and background which I highly recommend readers take the time to enjoy. They're not required, but add to its richness. Thus, as an outstanding science fiction novel, I give this book a strong five stars. However, if you want a bit more than engineering and science in a story, there are a few things I would have recommended be included, had I been a beta reader for this book. I realize that all reviews have a high degree of subjectivity, and the comments that follow are strictly my opinion and may not be shared in the slightest by other readers, especially if all you want is hard sci-fi. Nonetheless, that's part of the point of a review, to share one's opinion, so here is why I bumped it down to four stars.I found the characters mostly faceless. There could have been more descriptions of their physical appearance. More of the story could have been explored through going into some of the other characters' point of view. I would expect a bit more conflict among a group of people under such confined, stressful and sometimes life-threatening situation; these folks were a bit too cool at times, which is not always true of engineers, something I know first-hand since I managed them in a previous lifetime.I also was greatly disappointed that the cat did not have a more interesting role. He didn't even warrant a name, which I thought a bit odd, especially since he was so prominently displayed on the cover, which was misleading and could even turn off readers who would devour the hard, technical details so beautifully described in the story. Redoing the cover with an illustration of the base and the main characters would be a great investment. In spite of all my grumbling above, I truly did enjoy and appreciate this book and what it took to write it. As a physicist and former "rocket scientist" myself, I found very few things I wondered about on the technical side. There were a few places where I thought about making a few calculations, then reminded myself it was only a novel and to lighten up! It provides a realistic view and excellent vicarious experience of what it would be like to be a space pioneer. For that, I highly recommend it. Just don't expect much from the cat.

Todays fiction is tomorrows non-fiction By Amazon Customer The author posed the question as to the readers preference of style; whether it be a detailed, in depth explanation on the how's and why's of the tale's science content or a more, perhaps, whimsical philosophy of "It just works, OK?".The author struck a perfect balance between the two in that the science is most definitely there in all it's glorious, taken for granted style. It is so flawlessly interwoven with the narrative that it becomes the backdrop of the story; part of the scenery, as it were, leaving the author free to tell a tale about life, love, strife and sacrifice instead of explaining just exactly how FTL or inter-dimensional travel is really possible. What makes this story so enjoyable is it's solid grounding in reality. The author makes fine use of technology that is in widespread use every day, tech that is in development right now and she quite intelligently extrapolates from that what will surely exist in the future.I love that I was able to sit down and read an engaging story that had a mystery that didn't involve Bug Eyed Monsters, conflict without violence and romance without sex. In the midst of it all, she reminds us, soberingly, of not only the true dangers of extraterrestrial exploration but of the fragility of human life.I thank her for giving me a bit of her imagination to enjoy and for giving me the ability to answer the question "Do you know of any good books?" with a reply of "Why yes. Yes I do."

Excerpt from Over the Border: Acadia, the Home of EvangelineHe said also of the unhappy people at that time, It hurts me to hear their weeping and wailing. So we conclude that the pleasant face did not belie the heart which it mirrored. It is a singular coincidence that, for being hostile to their country at the time of the Revolution, his own family were driven into exile twenty years after the deportation of the unhappy French people.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An adventurous rail exploration By Rick Mills Here is a charming little book which details the travels of a group of 8 people on an adventure by rail to Acadia (Nova Scotia, Canada), apparently in the late 1930's or early 1940's.The tale begins with a chronology of the history of Acadia, the expulsion of the Acadians during the French and Indian War (1755), and the return of the exiles - as told in the poem "Evangeline" by Maine native Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1847 - also available as a Kindle eBook). The trip is loosely planned by perusing rail schedules obtained by mail. The group departs from Bangor, Maine. It is not clear whether they took the steamboat across the Bay of Fundy or went the long way around by rail. They describe the Bay of Fundy and the Basin of Minas in detail, with their great tides and discuss their history. They stop in Port Royal, Annapolis, Digby, Halifax, Grand Pre, Clare and Mount Desert Island [Maine]. At each stop they explore with a favorite activity being reading epitaphs in cemeteries (many quoted), attempting conversation with the locals - especially children - in French, learning local history, and generally wandering around. The rail system gets more primitive as they get far into the countryside during their adventure, portions in a converted baggage car tacked onto a local freight train. The book conveys the quaint and quiet essence which is Acadia. Great preparation for a trip to the area. Occasional passages in French. 1203 locations.

It would probably be of interest to people no living in Northeastern America. It soon became boring for me - having never lived in that part ofthe woods

When young David and Mama and Papa are celebrating Hanukkah one frosty winter evening in Brooklyn, Papa sees a parakeet sitting on the window ledge. He lets the parakeet in and everyone is delighted to find that it speaks Yiddish. They name it Dreidel and it becomes part of their family. Many years later, when David is in college, he is at a party one night and tells Dreidel's story―only to discover that Zelda, a young woman at the party, owned the bird herself as a child. Papa and Mama are worried that they will have to give their beloved pet back, but then David and Zelda decide to get married after college, and everyone agrees that they should take Dreidel with them as they start their own family.

The Parakeet Named Dreidel, by Isaac Bashevis Singer

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—In this picture book version of a story first published by Singer as part of a collection, a father relates the story of the time, 10 years ago, that his young son David rescued a parakeet that appeared on their snowy windowsill on the last evening of Hanukkah. Dreidel, as the family named him, is a friendly, tame bird that even speaks a bit of Yiddish ("Zeldele, go to sleep"); the family is overjoyed when no one answers any of their notices advertising a lost bird. Ten years go by, with Dreidel a beloved family member, and then David goes off to college—where he tells the story of Dreidel at a party and a young woman exclaims, "I am this Zeldele!" David and Zelda get married and Dreidel the matchmaker goes off to live with them. VERDICT Friendly cartoon watercolor illustrations and the father's warm, understated narration make this a wonderful choice for a family lapsit and a read-aloud over the holiday season or anytime.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

Singer’s A Parakeet Named Dreidel. we can picture ourselves surprised at the parakeet’s first appearance and feel ourselves part of Dreidel and the family's experiences as they get to know and love each other. A touching story that now has its deserved separate existence for young and old to enjoy..

Amazing By Norwest It was really good because Isaac found the parakeet on Hanukkah and at first he wanted the owner to find it but they didn't so his son grew up with it and then his son went to a Hanukkah party and the original owners came to Isaac's house and the son and original owners daughter got married and they kept the parakeet.L

I had a business trip in Madrid, with only a couple of days where I could do any sightseeing. Rick led me right to the best sights (I'm an art fan) and the best pieces in the art museum, plus he gave me great hints for an evening of tapas munching and another evening of flamenco! I will buy Rick Steves' guides again and again!

A stolen starship and a dead man's demons threaten to ignite an intergalactic war, as an unlikely pact between a child genius and a wicked giant spawns a clone with a mind of its own.

The clone is on a secret mission, not to steal the kixassa payoff, but to travel to the planet of death - a planet that no one has visited for a thousand years.

Unscrambled ethics torment a man who comes back from the dead, only to find himself being kidnapped by a murderer.

Meanwhile, pheromones kick into overdrive with kissing cousins, multiple wives, and an adventurous visitor. The steamiest romance, however, is between a man and somebody else's memory.

Another love nest heats up when somebody tries to stop a Celtic wedding. Dwarves befriend giants, children befriend giants, but clones befriend nobody except themselves. When all is said and done, the Humans wish they'd never left Earth, because too many pirates are cruising the galaxy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four stars By Demelza Carlton This book delves deeper into the Norse and Druidic myths surrounding northern Europe and the British Isles - and flies them to the stars. Hell and the afterlife, non-corporeal life forms, racism rearing its ugly head and a fascinating Celtic wedding ceremony as circumstances take them back to the brink of war once more.On the whole, this story is happier than the second book in the series, Shades of Moloch, and some of that happiness does come Brigit's way, fortunately. Now, I don't do spoilers, so I can't say what shape it takes...simply that it does take shape. The fate of the Fomorians and Tirnogians (and all their allies) takes an unexpected turn in this book, and I'll be interested to see how the plot pans out in what I anticipate will be the next book in the series.

This book is about Grace, an amazing young sensuous woman who learns how to survive this ordeal by adapting and improvising her skills to stay alive. Amazing Grace has nothing to do with religion but there are excerpt that the survivors rely on to gather their strength or faith. Volume V of the El Nino prediction that has been linked with the arrival of the apocalyptic advent of the undead and zombies in our world. Whether you believe it or not, the havoc or chaos either one of these perfect storms brings to our society is worth reading about as the book is full with information on surviving the weather related disasters and the zombie attacks when such conflicts appear. There are no permanent solutions offered. Some is speculation, others are part of history. Much of the courageous and innovative wisdom comes from life’s experiences and those things these survivors have done in the past. Weather forecasters have predicted a severe and damp El Nino weather conditions, the extreme change in climate and the environmental impacted of the numerous flashfloods helped spread the fear and number of zombies and their lethal virus biting behaviors. We already know that in every disaster, calamity or disorder, zombies seem to appear as much as the plague does and options were given on how to defeat or defend yourself against these flesh eating undead creatures. Zombies, whether they are crawlers, creepers, walkers or mutants, thrive off adverse environmental conditions and attack the non-infected with bites that in turn infects them and multiplies their existence. Remember that victims are often created through circumstances. This storm is a serious disaster maker, which, by the implementation of martial law, causes massive evacuations and produces grave consequences related to flashfloods, mudslides etc. This novel is about numerous violent encounter with zombies under the perfect storms created by the El Nino weather phenomena predicted by forecasters to be the worst since 1998. All the prior written and released book volumes deal with individual cases that accumulatively leads up to the final story. Broken down into volumes so that the reader can break this phenomena up into chapters or series for their own pleasure. Those who believe climate change is real or pending, will be disappointed in the reality of the El Nino. Those who believe in zombies will be appreciative of the tips or hints given to survive such calamity. When all is said, this is a general fiction book with action and drama and sexually explicit scenes. This book is different as it deals with human emotions, sexual desires, violent encounters and all those chaotic events under pressure that deals with the stress, anxiety and other problems related to being attacked by a horde of walkers or water bloated zombies in Southern California during the El Nino produced flashfloods; now lasting longer than the landscape can handle and how stress, loneliness, sexual tension between the survivors impacts their behaviors while trying to find a cure or solution to the challenges at hand. In the end the book comes together as a common problem solver that gives tactics on how to cope with this disaster that destroyed and disrupted the lives of those affected by Mother Nature and the zombie virus.

The Beginning of Greatness By Charles Wheeler Perhaps, with the exception of Riders of the Purple Sage, Heritage of the Desert is the best western Zane Grey ever wrote. It combines every thing one expects to find in the genre, and then adds a little bit more you don't expect to find. It is the basic story of a young man, John Hare, who has come west to regain his health and to find his place in life only to be branded "Dene's spy" and becomes a hunted man. There is the Mormon element, only in this book they receive favorable treatment by Zane Grey; there are animal heros; a faithful Indian companion to the heroine, a half-Indian girl, Mescal; rustlers and land thieves; a favored son gone bad; and the canyon country of Utah described as only the master detailer can depict it in all of its glory and spendor. With this book Zane Grey set the standard by which he himself had to live up to with each succeeding novel, and HE DID.

His novels were written of the time when the west was being populated by people from the east. Each had a story behind them and how they got there. Zane Grey had spent time in the localities of his stories and writes in the venacular of the people. He never fails to enertain and keeps you interest burning. I enjoy Zane Grey and Louis Lamore as western writers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. How could you not enjoy another Zane Grey book By Ron Zane Grey is prolific. He has the ability to put you there with his vivid descriptions. I have not been to the north rim of the Grand Canyon until I read this book. The characters, mainly Mormons, who save the life of a young lunger. The family also has a half Navajo woman they raised. a worthless son who goes against his family and and assortment of rustlers with a couple of these guys who still have some morals. It is the usual story of greed. There is a wild stallion, a part wolf dog and a droopy eared burro who contribute to the story.. The Navajos are portrayed in a positive way and good since I have enjoyed interacting with them in the past. Overall it is a good read.

Ruskin in Florence By Amazon Customer Ruskin has great insights into medieval architecture especially in Italy but he is bigoted against the Renaissance so beware of that. Henry James took him to task for that and James was right. However, as long as you are aware of Ruskin's prejudicial views of Renaissance art and architecture his books can be interesting.

The Red and the Black, Stendhal’s masterpiece, is the story of Julien Sorel, a young dreamer from the provinces, fueled by Napoleonic ideals, whose desire to make his fortune sets in motion events both mesmerizing and tragic. Sorel’s quest to find himself, and the doomed love he encounters along the way, are delineated with an unprecedented psychological depth and realism. At the same time, Stendhal weaves together the social life and fraught political intrigues of post–Napoleonic France, bringing that world to unforgettable, full-color life. His portrait of Julien and early-nineteenth-century France remains an unsurpassed creation, one that brilliantly anticipates modern literature.

About the Author 1783 - 1842.

Excellent psychological novel By A Customer Strangely, all of my friends who were raised outside the United States are well aware of this book--everyone raised inside has no knowledge (even people who have taken three years of french in college!). If anyone has any theories on this I'd love to know. "Red and the Black" is a terrific look into the power structure of 19th century France, the wheeling and dealing of the church and aristocracy. Depictions of drawing room socials and seminary politics feel very right (though I wouldn't know much about either, as historical fact), and have a very engaging cynical edge to it.In addition, it is about a man who is pulled by two opposing forces: an ambition to gain power (either through the church or state; it matters little to him which), and intense passions that are in his heart. He realizes from a young age that in order to succeed in the world, he must master the art of hypocrisy. And as he reaches the age where he first begins to explore his passions, this desire for hypocrisy and conquest get horribly mixed up, leading to horrendous self-analysis on the part of the main character, followed by equally strange actions. The personality of the characters are wonderfully believable--the interactions of these people, full of all sorts of emotions and ideas, are a good study in interpersonal dynamics (in a sort of extreme case) and emotional growth. The characters are alive, they grow and learn, and their excesses of suffering and joy make this a page-turner. To sum up: a well-written, engaging work that depicts 19th century power struggles, incredibly interesting characters, and a few ideas about life to chew on as well.

Regarding The Translation: I Prefer By Taylor Rand Burton Raffel's modern translation to Scott-Moncreiff's 1926 version (that's the one you're looking at here). Raffel's Stendhal is more accessible and immediate - The Red and The Black becomes more of a novel than does S-M's nearly 100-year-old translation of a nearly 200-year-old text. However, S-M's translation may be closer to Stendhal's convoluted style (ironically, Stendhal's writing was, I believe, considered straightforward in his time). I've read the book in the original French - as a learning exercise - and it seems to me that S-M's work is a bit closer to the original. I'm no scholar, not a native French speaker nor a translator either, so I won't venture down that road very far.Anyhow, if you're looking for a good translation with a modern feel, I'd go with Raffel's. It's pricier (still cheap though), but I believe you'd get far more enjoyment and more of a connection with the book as a novel, rather than as a literary artifact from a long-past era.Actually, why not get both versions? S-M's translation is only a dollar and not without an antiquarian charm.

44 of 55 people found the following review helpful. in flagrante delicto By A Customer About halfway through this arch and amusing tale of the foolish, machiavellian Julien Sorel we read: "He almost went mad with joy on finding an edition of Voltaire. He ran and opened the library door so as not to be caught in the act. Next he gave himself the pleasure of opening each of the eighty volumes." You too will almost go mad with joy when you slip into a book that can startle with its pulse, its passion, its ability to seem like a forbidden pleasure. You will smile with glee as you run your hands across pages racy enough to make you feel like you could be caught in the act. You'll find yourself sighing on page 248 when you realize Julien has a full eighty volumes of Voltaire to keep his fires burning, while you only have 500 pages of the Red and the Black. But don't give into that familiar panic--that it might end, that you will spend years regretting those 500 pages of momentary pleasure--because it only gets better with each successive read. Like Cleopatra, it doesn't cloy where most it satisfies, but leaves you short of breath, wanting more-
