It provided us with helpful suggestions everywhere we went. We didn't rely on it solely - we also had an excellent large map, suggestions from friends, and local suggestions at each stop. But as a general guide, we greatly appreciated it. Buy the paper version rather than the e-version because you'll consult it all the time, and it's just much easier to use.

  • A Woman of No Importance is a play by Irish playwright Oscar Wilde. The play premièred on 19 April 1893 at London's Haymarket Theatre. Like Wilde's other society plays, it satirizes English upper class society. It has been performed on stages in Europe and North America since his death in 1900.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Oscar, you're the greatest! By Perry B. Alers, aka peebee One thing I like about Oscar Wilde: he gets better each time you encounter him. Just one performance or reading is completely inadequate; you must return again and again to mine out all the nuggets he has left behind. In this play, for example, his crack about fox hunting - the "unspeakable/uneatable" one - first appears, tossed off in a scene made up of the vacuous dialog of a bunch of English aristocrats. You've got to be on your toes or you'll miss it completely. And the same goes for the little crumbs of plot he scatters in such conversations. Only after you've finished the play and go back to reread it do you see them. He was a meticulous craftsman. Which makes it all the more painful to point out the one flaw I found - one which has no doubt generated a river of tenure-gaining footnotes over the past 120 years. The crashing third-act curtain line by Mrs. Arbuthnot is an actor's dream, but it is set up by one of the corniest exchanges I can remember. In a pure, mustache-twirling piece of Victorian melodrama, our gentle hero, Gerald, goes into a murderous rage in about four lines. Hester, a girl he has so far simply taken for a walk in the garden, runs on stage claiming she has just been "insulted" by Lord Illingworth, and Gerald goes ape. Now, "insult" might have meant far more to a late Victorian than it does to us, but it makes the whole scene look a bit ridiculous. Not worthy of the Master.

A nice little play By medina4me I have to say that although I am not a great fan of Oscar Wilde I do enjoy his plays. The Importance of Being EarnestThe Ideal HusbandLady Windemere's FanandA Woman of No ImportanceIf you like funny, cheeky comedies where people always say the opposite of what they mean and are never serious about anything serious then this is a good read. These little plays are not only fun and easy to read but they are short enough that they can be read in a day or even less (depends on your reading speed). There may be some subjects tackled that folks may not understand like Bimetalism and perhasp other 19th Century words used. However, those are easily researched and they don't confuse the subject or the play. I highly recommend this play especially since the price is free.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sparkling wit combined with a big dose of bitter By Loving G-ma The play is filled with clever conversations and biting satire on the various high-society types, as well as some of the naive and struggling younger folk, whose idealistic aspirations collide with all manner of obstacles.Oscar Wilde's scathing wit is in evidence throughout. But the story has a a more negatively toned ending than many of his other sparkling and cleverly resolved episodes in the comedy of manners.Large helping of food for thought, but on the bitter side.

Review Reviews of ebook from Amazon.com: "Above the Labyrinth truly is a page-turner. I just had to know what happened to PT next. I hope Yeager is able to muster another adventure for this very realistic and believable character." Roger McCoy, Author of 'Ending In Ice' & 'On The Edge' "A wonderful adventure story full of action. A great read from a new author. Very Grisham like in the telling." "I couldn't put down, Michael Yeager's Above the Labyrinth...well crafted and keenly insightful novel. Anyone who wants to better understand the devastating effects of all wars, and the Vietnam War in particular, should read this book. I look forward to hearing more from Yeager." "WOW! This book is amazing! Buy it, start reading it and you won't put it down 'til you finish it....thank you to Mark Morris for sharing, and thank you Michael Yeager for writing this book." How come I can't find any other books by this author By paul h brehm Yeager must be a newcomer on the scene as evidenced by the fact that I can't find any other publications from him. This book was great reading and hard for me to put down. I hope to see more from this young author.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Truly this is a page turner. It's hard to put down. By Roger McCoy Michael Yeager's experience in Vietnam and his acquaintance with issues of post traumatic stress no doubt play a big role in making this exciting and engrossing book a good read. The reader watches as the protagonist, PT, moves from seemingly safe job flying for Air America into harrowing life or death situations. Yeager skillfully progresses PT from a carefree young flyer to a hardened veteran of life at its toughest in a war zone. PT faces those moments when a war involves civilians, and he has only a fraction of a second to make a decision on whether to pull the trigger. The experiences inevitably take their toll on PT and he eventually finds himself unsuited for the ordinary routines of civilian life. Even after returning from Vietnam, P.T feels the need to settle a score with an unsavory character from the war, and vows to "fix the problem." Yeager wisely leaves some details of the "fix" to the readers imagination, but leaves no doubt that the problem is solved. Above the Labyrinth truly is a page-turner. I just had to know what happened to PT next. I hope Yeager is able to muster another adventure for this very realistic and believable character,

Reads like the author is vary mature writer, gifted in keeping the readers interest in the various movements in the life of PT. Gives the reader a good sense what the experience of war in Vietnam s like up close and the inner struggle of a Veteran coming to terms with the experiences in the war zone. Character development is rich and varied. Look forward to Mike's next venture.

Review The Dermot Sparhawk series is one of Boston's finest, worthy of sharing the shelf with Robert B.Parker's iconic Spenser novels. Tom MacDonald's roaring good stories, fueled by marvelous characters, hits the gas on page one and never lets up. These book assures MacDonald a place in the top tier of New England suspense writers."Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times bestselling author of Through the Evil Days.

From the Author Have you always wanted to be an author?Being an author wasn't even a thought for me. In 1999 I went back to school for an MBA at Boston College, and while I was there I accidentally discovered writing. I learned an important lesson in the MBA program: I had neither the aptitude nor the interest to do well in business.  But I also learned I had a talent for writing, and I went after it. After I graduated from BC, I was accepted into the MFA creative writing program at the Stonecoast Writing Seminars at the University of Southern Maine. The moment I got there I knew I was in my element.  I have come full circle.  I am now teaching creative writing at Boston College in the evening. What about the genre appeals the most to the writer in you?The pureness of the protagonist is what appeals to me. It's an American archetype, a hero beyond corruption. This doesn't mean the hero is perfect or moral or ethical in all areas of his life, but that he is a man of his word. He can't be bought off. Money isn't his yardstick. This type of hero focuses on the means, not the ends. It is how he accomplishes things, not what he accomplishes. His quest is personal, a test of character, and it's the test he obsesses on until it's done. The case is merely a prop, an obstacle he must overcome. These stories are highly individualistic, one man against the system. I think readers live vicariously through the hero - I always did.

From the Inside Flap Boston native Dermot Sparhawk is at it again. The artwork at the beginning of each chapter was a nice addition; I enjoyed it.Tom has worked hard to develop his writing skills and I believe he is now one of the best in the thriller department. I couldn’t find a sour note anywhere in the book. He held my attention from start to finish. I read it very slowly because I didn’t want it to end.Tom MacDonald is hitting it out of the park with his Dermot Sparhawk series. I eagerly await the next installment.

By Amazon Customer This is the third book of Tom McDonald's that I have written. I find the this to be his best. His use of language has risen to another level. The style keeps me up at night reading when I should be getting some shut eye as I follow the twists and turns. The characters are great and I enjoy how he continues to weave and build upon the first two books and their great characters. The description of the city is the best. I grew up in the streets of Boston and Tom describes them with a great sense of familiarity. He has a gift and look forward to his next book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Who Needs Dinner or a Vacuumed Carpet? Dermot Sparhawk is in Town! By Margaret Liolin The Revenge of Liam McGrew was superb. I loved the first book, liked the second, and this third totally blew me out of the water. To have Dermot presented in the first person - the ONLY character so presented - is a stroke of genius. Everybody else is vital, of course, but once I started reading in the first person, I thought, "Aha! it's my buddy, Sparhawk, yahoo-oo!" The author's attention to the minutest detail is remarkable. Every facial twitch, bodily shift, brow furrow, to clumsily name a few, helps each character come to life on a deeply personal level, so that it does not take long before we really and truly KNOW this or that guy. Furthermore, that Liam McGrew, on his last legs, is sitting in Belfast throughout the entire story, directing and manipulating his "people" like a master puppeteer, is another brilliant concept, played out perfectly by this amazing Tom MacDonald. The book is a wonderful page-turner. While I was reading, all house-keeping and meal-preparations were put on hold! Already I'm looking forward to Tom's fourth book.

I am not even done reading it and already love it. I will post an update once I am done but can already say that this book is as great as the magnificent main character, Leo. This book is so beautifully written, you can visualize everything that is described, its as if you are there. I catch myself gasping out loud when intense situations come up in the book. You cannot stop reading it, it is so addicting and you're constantly thinking "I want to know what happens!" I love the character so much and how every other character's back story is given so you can understand their backgrounds and how each character goes hand in hand. It is amazing. This book really is a story, a novel, a thriller of its own kind. I really hope to see this become a movie in the future. GREAT writing! Thank you so much. :)UPDATEWow, just when I thought I new what to expect about this book, it still found ways of surprising me. I finally finished this incredible book. Even through the toughest times the book never failed to put me in a trance, drawing me in with its fascinating plot. You ever read a book that states certain things and you're left with questions going in your head like "how does that happen? what would they use to do this?" etc, well this book even adds in the tangent questions one would have within the readings of this book. What I love most about this book is its uniqueness, its not your average book, this book goes into the perspective of the animal, Leo the lion, to show you what he was thinking during his trials and tribulations. The colorful vocabulary and graceful use of descriptive adjectives added that extra oomf to the already immaculate story. You are constantly relating to the main character, you feel what he feels, emotionally and in terms of all the five senses. The ending of this book is so powerful, it leaves you with your mouth gaped open and your mind awakened, This story not only has a very fascinating plot, but it also has a very powerful message behind it that I think all humanity should learn. Thank you once again Hugo for writing this masterpiece. Best book ever. A story. A novel. A thriller of its own kind. I wish you lots of prosperity. :)

A story in a world of shifters, demons, vampires and witches so exciting you won’t be able to put it down. And when it’s over you’ll still want more.“Does anything happen in slow motion when you’re around?”With the threat of planekite – a mineral deadly to both humans and witches – as real as ever, Daire Dunne, a three century old enforcer of Coven Nine, has been working undercover in the Fire MC to try and track the distributors of the synthesized drug. Not making any headway and captivated by a petite blond at one of Fire’s parties, he decides to put her on the back of his bike and take her home. But not even his impassioned kiss would derail her from knocking him out in order to steal important information. Unable to let her get away with it, he springs into a chase that will change his life forever.“Her scent. That hyacinth sweet scent waft back, and his nostrils flared. Mine. Forgetting his job, forgetting formality, even forgetting diplomacy, he chased her.”Cee Cee might not have the typical abilities of her race, but she’s smart, cunning and determined. For decades she’s been patiently and methodically planning her revenge against the man that ruined her life and nothing will get in her way. Not her family and certainly not the overprotective, badass sexy witch who won’t let up and every time he catches up, he makes her feel more alive than ever before.“He was all fire and storm, and a part of her, a female part she’d denied for so long, wanted to feel the bluster and ride the burn.”Drugging him over and over hasn’t discouraged him. On the contrary, he seems more determined than ever to catch her, especially when it seems that the same man she’s after is behind the planekite mining. But how would he feel if he found out the whole truth about her family and what she knows about his?“Who knew that you’re a ruthless sweetheart with a penchant for trouble?”This thrilling and sexy sweet story will grab you right from the start and keep you interested until the very last page. I just love this world Rebecca Zanetti has created and want to know each and every species and fascinating character.I just love rough, bossy alpha males because the tougher they are the harder they fall. I really wanted to read about Daire because he made me laugh so much when he swore he would mate a delicate and compliant woman. I knew life would give him just the opposite and I loved how even though he fought it in the beginning, he completely embraced their bond and Cee Cee just as she is with her wild spirit.“He wanted that wildness, needed it set free and alive around him. Nothing in him, not one inch, wanted to tame that. He just wanted to ride it, be part of it.”Cee Cee is kind, intelligent, independent and head strong, the latter almost being her supernatural ability. I loved how unwavering she is in protecting her family and that same fierceness translated nicely into caring for Daire. The chemistry between them is instant and hotter than gasoline to fire. But the romance is even better. I just loved how the tough guy softened when it came to the wild temptress and how much she made him work for it. Come on, she drugged him three times and that’s not counting all the perilous situations she forced him into while he was after her.“He planted his mouth over hers and swept his tongue inside, taking what he wanted. Sensation bombarded him, stronger than before. Hunger. Need. Craving. Possessiveness. Protectiveness. He consumed her, feasting at her mouth like a starving man.”As with the previous book, I really liked reading about Garret, the bears and Logan. Like I mentioned earlier, I would jump at the chance to read about each and every one of these characters.Rebecca Zanetti continues to write amazing, action packed, and blazing hot romances. Wicked Edge is fast paced with head jerking twists and turns and swoon worthy moments. It is book #2 in the Real Enforcers series that can be read as a standalone with a happy ending, but readers would benefit from reading the series in order.

With each new book in this series Rebecca brings you characters that you will be in awe with. In Wicked Edge we meet Daire and Cee Cee.Daire being a protector of the Realm is ready to protect at a moment’s notice. He always knew what kind of mate he imagined himself with. Someone docile and tame. Well you don’t always get what you think you are looking for.Cee Cee is full of mystery and after a set-up, she now has the Daire a Realm protector on her heels. But there is more to Cee-Cee than meets the eye. This is action packed full of explosions and some fight scenes that will leave you breathless. The chemistry between Cee- Cee and Daire is extremely hot. Especially when you have an Alpha who is made to protect and Cee-Cee who wants to do her own thing with out protection. There are some great cameos from characters that we love from other Rebecca’s other series, and hints for possible books for her other characters.. The anticipation is killing me.

By GothicMoms This review and more can be seen at GothicMoms.blogspot.comFirst of all, let's try to clear up some of the rumors I've been hearing right now. Wicked Edge and the Realm Enforcer's Series as a whole, is NOT an MC contemporary novel. Far from it. It is a continuation of the incredible, delectable Dark Protector's series, with the focus being in the human world. The MC aspect only has to do with the Dunne brothers' ongoing investigation on the deadly drug taking out witches, Apollo. Don't get me wrong, Zanetti has used what little MC activity within these books to its full capacity making for some very adrenaline pumping fight scenes. And the rival MC? A group of Grizzly Bear shifters, so in no way shape or form are these contemporary novels. That being said, I'm loving it. The guest appearances, the tie ins, the relationships/matings that are continuously bonding the families that fans already know and love are fangtastic, without being overwhelmingly so. The Realm Enforcers is a strong enough series to develop a fan base on its own while more than enough to keep Dark Protector fans from going into withdrawals.Daire Dunne is more than sure that fate has planned for him to find a mate that will be obedient, docile and completely organized. He finds out just how far from the truth that is after he ends up being drugged by the "enhanced human" he brings home with him for a night of fun in the sack. What he gets is far more complications in his life than he ever thought possible, along with a possible lead on the witch helping with the making of Apollo. If he can survive the woman fate has brought kicking and screaming into his life, he may be a few steps closer to closing his case.Cee Cee has plenty more secrets than just what her name is and her true species, and she's very good at keeping them. She has been plotting for almost thirty years revenge against the demon who killed her mate, and the time has come to put all of those crazy plans to action. As strategically as she has everything planned there should be no complications, except for the deadly enforcer she pissed by drugging once, or twice. Not that she's really keeping count or anything. Cee Cee has had her life decided for her since birth due to not having the same powers as her brethren, but now her time has come to show everyone how strong she truly is. But will she survive to enjoy the outcome?Fast-paced, action packed edge of your seat plots and characters readers can't help but love. This is a Paranormal novel to be loved regardless of gender. A true must read, right along with the rest of the series.

‘Making Friends – A Spanish Memoir’ is a book of reminiscences based on real people and events, commencing in the late summer of the year 2000. A humorous, informative and sometimes poignant account of a young Englishman’s discovery of a whole new world beyond the boundaries of the expat teaching community, his friendships with Antonio, Dominic, Pedrín and others at first complicate then enrich his life in the Spanish city of Murcia. In an account that takes us from seedy bars, through rock group rehearsals, to valiant attempts to help the eccentric and rather unstable Antonio sell village houses and thus restore his self-esteem, the author makes his own journey of self-discovery which leaves him a wiser, more empathetic man. ***Please ‘look inside’ to sample the book before purchasing.***

If I were a man, I believe I would have enjoyed this book much more; I'm just not into the bar or rock & roll scene. The author's descriptions of the area and the characters he meets are very good and I did have a couple of chuckles while reading.

This second book in Lindsay Cummings’s Balance Keepers series explodes with just as much magic, mystery, friendship, and humor as Book One. Fans of books like Brandon Mull's The Candy Shop War or the Unwanteds series by Lisa McMann will love the action and imagination in this epic fantasy adventure series.

With both boy and girl main characters, creatures like Hammerfin sharks to battle, a traitor to expose, and a boarding school that could be described as Hogwarts underground, there's something for every reader to enjoy in this series reminiscent of the classic Journey to the Center of the Earth. An anti-bullying theme also makes this great for in-classroom reading.

In The Pillars of Ponderay, Balance Keepers Albert, Birdie, and Leroy enter the underground watery Realm of Ponderay along with their archrival, Hoyt, in an attempt to reset the Balance of the Realm. If they don’t succeed in time, all of California above could be consumed by tsunamis and hurricanes.

    From the Back Cover

Albert Flynn is psyched to return to the Core, the magical world at the center of the earth where Balance Keepers fix problems in three underground Realms. Last term, Albert and his Balance Keeper teammates Birdie and Leroy saved New York by fixing the Calderon Realm and were crowned First Unit, aka the Coolest Kids in the Core.

Now Albert and his teammates have been called to the Core for an emergency training session . . . along with their archenemy, Hoyt. There's a horrible Imbalance in the Ponderay Realm, and they have only seven days before California will be swallowed by hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

But things feel off in the Core. Their mentor Trey is acting super weird, and Hoyt is beating them fair and square in the training competitions. Even with the superpowers of Albert's Master Tile, Albert, Birdie, and Leroy just can't seem to get their First Unit mojo back.

Worse yet, the Imbalance is way too severe to have been caused by natural means—there's a traitor in their midst.

Will Albert, Leroy, and Birdie discover who's been putting the Core—and the world above—in danger? Can they save Ponderay before California becomes an underwater wasteland forever?

This second book in Lindsay Cummings's epic fantasy adventure series is packed with fantastical creatures, perilous journeys, and the magic of choosing to do what's right.

Three short stories guaranteed to have you smelling the salty breeze while you scan for cruising bull reds, or seeing your breath as you choose the perfect fly for a winter carp. See the fish, make the cast, the fish eats, set the hook, fight the fish, make the release. Sounds easy enough, right? Heeeeeck no. When it comes to fly fishing, you can count on more going wrong than right: soul-crushing tangles, trees that rudely interrupt your backcast, finicky fish, finicky weather, uncomfortably curious wildlife, uncommonly ignorant humans...you get the idea. Our perseverance is a testament to either addiction or madness, but for a few of us, fly fishing IS a drug. Better than drugs. It's a way of life. Journey with the author through flashy victory and utter defeat as he tells just a few of the fish stories he's collected along the way.

People belong to different parts of the world have distinct characteristics, cultural biases and specific ways to see the world in general. Journalists and other experts travel to different places, meet with local people and then describe about the cultures on the basis of their observations. Unfortunately, most of such experts’ problem is their lack of knowledge about the history – the history which shapes certain perceptions, practices and art etc. of that civilization. As a Pakistani-born American, I commonly observe how brutally, the experts on Pakistan here in the West, misinterpret what Pakistani really is. There are significant biases which can be seen – some are unintentional because of lack of knowledge but some are very intentional and deliberate. In The Green Ibn Battuta, Ali Hassan demonstrates sensitivity with sophistication while describing other cultures and touched sensitive issues, using the historical references, with subtlety and nuance. His book gives this feeling to the reader that what he wrote, are strictly his personal experiences and he somewhat left to the readers to judge instead of preaching and imposing his views on them. I highly recommend it.

Green Ibn Battuta is a great read filled with entertaining anecdotes By Riaz Haq We are used to reading world travel accounts written by western travelers; Ali Hasan Cemendtaur's Ibn Battuta is a rare exception as it sees the world through the eyes of a Pakistani. The title is a tribute to Ibn Battuta, the 14th century Muslim traveler from North Africa who wrote extensively about his travels of much of the known world at the time. Ali's Ibn Battuta covers his travels starting in 1990s.The Green Ibn Battuta is filled with entertaining anecdotes and insightful observations about many exotic places and interesting cultures. It is written in an easy to read and highly engaging style that will keep you absorbed and make you finish it in one sitting once you start reading it. I highly recommend it.http://www.riazhaq.com/2015/12/my-footloose-friend-ali-cemendtaurs.html

Due to his experience in journalism & knowledge of history, he is able to connect and explain significance of each spot he visited. For example, following are some of the interesting highlights of his journey which i enjoyed the most.-Azerbaijan - Visiting Qoh-i-Qaf mountain & Multan KarwanSaraye where he discovered old trade ties between the Pakistani city of Multan and the Central Asia region dating back to the 15th century.-Israel - Visiting holy land of all three Abraham religion. He highlights how he had to pass test to prove his Muslim identity before attending Juma prayer in Masjid AlAqsa. His travelogue includes his visit to Israel, Azerbaijan, bitter experience in Colombia, South Africa, North Korea, Cuba, Haiti, Western Europe, and Middle East.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested to learn about cultures, languages, religion, conflict zones, and rich history on planet Earth.

A Flawed Gem, Nearly Unknown But Worth The Read By A Customer I became interested in Off On A Comet through the old Classics Comics version, and I was able to track it down once in the late 1970's; this book is exceedingly rare. It concerns the travels of a French foreign legionnaire, his sidekick, and various others carried off on a comet which sideswipes the earth in the 1800's. This "comet" is a small, planetiod-like world with atmosphere, land, and ocean. The journey is utterly unbelievable in the light of present knowledge, but Verne is as scientifically correct relative to the knowledge of his day as he could be. Before the travelers are redeposited on the earth in another grazing collision, the comet's eccentric orbit carries them near Venus and Mars, causing them to suffer through terrible extremes of climate. Verne delights in the ability of human ingenuity to overdome obstacles, conflicts, and deprivation as they explore and edure their temporary home. The flights of imagination involved are remarkable and the characterizations are good. I was, however, surprised at the vicious anti-Semitism evident in the characters and the narrative. This will be an enormous problem for many readers, and is a major flaw in an otherwise superb work

By Dirk Nomad As with another reviewer, nostalgic recollection of the great Classics Illustrated Comic version of Off on a Comet prompted me to get the original from the library. Alas, Off on a Comet begins at a point near the end of the Classics Comics plot. Turns out all the good parts are in part one of Hector Servadac, called To the Sun. The library found me a volume called "The Space Novels of Jules Verne" (Dover publications, 1960) which contains both To the Sun? and Off on a Comet. Sometimes these are called Hector Servadac: Part One and Hector Servadac: Part Two, respectively.

I especially enjoy authors like Jules Verne, who had quite an imagination! One thing that is fun to do is compare his imaginative ideas with what we know today. For instance, this book is about traveling through our solar system on a comet. Of course we know much more about the solar system today, but it is fun to see how much more we know compared to a century ago. However, this book got pretty technical at times, talking about planet distances from the sun, time it would take to travel those distances in space, figuring out mass, diameter, etc. of the comet, all in great detail, and much of it was tedious and wrong. Having said that, I still enjoy how he writes. His characters have quite an adventure, and it was fun to go along for the ride!

Not quite a stand-alone book - but there is some great stuff in it By Mike Robbins This book does not easily stand on its own; it’s part of a series, and unfortunately I only read this volume. As a result I found bits of the storyline confusing and felt I was supposed to be more familiar with the characters than I was. This is a pity, because there is some really nice stuff in this book, and if I’d read the first volume, I think I’d have enjoyed it tremendously.P.J. McDermott's Rise of the Erlachi concerns an intergalactic crimefighter, Hickory Lace. She’s also an empath – someone who can divine the thoughts of other beings and sometimes influence them by the power of her mind. She is off to another planet with two friends and a pair of stellar smugglers to try and recover a sacred and magical sword that has been stolen in one part of the planet, and is about to be used to overthrow the rightful king of a neighbouring kingdom. I ran into problems straight away; there was a lot about Hickory, her friends and the smugglers that I would clearly have understood had I read the first book in the series. The same applied to the smugglers, and the planet and its people. But despite that, I found a lot to like in this book. It’s well-written and well-paced, and the author has a clear, literate style that is easy and pleasant to read. The descriptions of the planet, its ecosystem and its inhabitants are great fun. My favourites were the Violators: “Half as tall as a human and black as soot... The beast’s muscles rippled as it negotiated the steep gradient and its head swung slowly from side to side, low to the ground. Yellow eyes on opposite sides of its head swiveled back and forth. It snuffled the trail through a single nostril located high on its snout.” Great. And the homicidal paramour plant is one I’ll definitely avoid in Central Park. Best of all is a huge demon bird; the way this is introduced to the story is really chilling. This stuff is worthy of C.S. Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet. It’s exactly what you read good fantasy for. However, the storyline concerning the rebellion and the sacred sword didn’t grab me the way it should have done. I think it might have done if I’d read the first book in the series. Also, to judge from the blurbs for the first volume, there’s an innovative and intriguing storyline underlying the series – perhaps concerning the Teacher, one of the characters. But it doesn’t come over in this book.I’ve wound up marking this at a modest three stars, but that reflects my experience trying to read the book as a standalone story. On its own, Rise of the Erlachi didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Even so, there’s some nice stuff in it. I’d certainly give McDermott’s work another try; and I suspect that anyone who had read the first volume, Avanaux, and its prequel, The Second Coming, would enjoy this a lot.The author kindly supplied an ebook for review purposes.

We are drawn into this world from the very first paragraph, with well-drawn and believable characters. The prologue sets the reader up for what is to come – this will be an adventure book where the characters must rescue a powerful and magic sword stolen from a warring faction. As the book progresses, there are overtones of other themes found in the science fiction genre that we have come to love (think Star Wars) – father issues, a supreme teacher/leader, a corrupt/inept king, the struggle for power and how to keep it.There is excitement from the beginning of this quest, with a spaceship that almost crashes going through a meteorite storm to land on the planet where the quest will take place. The descriptions of the harsh alien natural world and the many dangers encountered by our group of heroes follow in quick succession after the landing. The “teacher” character provides a baseline philosophy for the work that turns out to be essential to the action that will end the novella.I occasionally had difficulty following the political details that were described, mostly because the names of the characters and their races/political factions/worlds are unique to this series. But, I would recommend it for those interested in the action/science fiction genre.I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

A Nice, Quick Read for Science Fiction/Fantasy Fans By Page LaRue In this quick read, Commander Hickory Lace and her group arrive on the planet Prosperine in a space ship. Their mission this time is to retrieve the stolen, magical (or not, depending on which of them you ask) Sword of Connat. The stakes grow higher as the story progresses and they are drawn into a war. This is the second book of a trilogy and I didn’t read the first one. So perhaps that accounts for the trouble I had following what was happening at first. But after a bit, I got into the swing of it and enjoyed the semi-sentient flowers, wild colorful weather, fish that required tornadoes for mating purposes, and other world building oddities. I rooted for Hickory’s team in their hardships and battles.I was given a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
