Just one performance or reading is completely inadequate; you must return again and again to mine out all the nuggets he has left behind. In this play, for example, his crack about fox hunting - the "unspeakable/uneatable" one - first appears, tossed off in a scene made up of the vacuous dialog of a bunch of English aristocrats. You've got to be on your toes or you'll miss it completely. And the same goes for the little crumbs of plot he scatters in such conversations. Only after you've finished the play and go back to reread it do you see them. He was a meticulous craftsman. Which makes it all the more painful to point out the one flaw I found - one which has no doubt generated a river of tenure-gaining footnotes over the past 120 years. The crashing third-act curtain line by Mrs. Arbuthnot is an actor's dream, but it is set up by one of the corniest exchanges I can remember. In a pure, mustache-twirling piece of Victorian melodrama, our gentle hero, Gerald, goes into a murderous rage in about four lines. Hester, a girl he has so far simply taken for a walk in the garden, runs on stage claiming she has just been "insulted" by Lord Illingworth, and Gerald goes ape. Now, "insult" might have meant far more to a late Victorian than it does to us, but it makes the whole scene look a bit ridiculous. Not worthy of the Master.

A nice little play By medina4me I have to say that although I am not a great fan of Oscar Wilde I do enjoy his plays. The Importance of Being EarnestThe Ideal HusbandLady Windemere's FanandA Woman of No ImportanceIf you like funny, cheeky comedies where people always say the opposite of what they mean and are never serious about anything serious then this is a good read. These little plays are not only fun and easy to read but they are short enough that they can be read in a day or even less (depends on your reading speed). There may be some subjects tackled that folks may not understand like Bimetalism and perhasp other 19th Century words used. However, those are easily researched and they don't confuse the subject or the play. I highly recommend this play especially since the price is free.

Sparkling wit combined with a big dose of bitter By Loving G-ma The play is filled with clever conversations and biting satire on the various high-society types, as well as some of the naive and struggling younger folk, whose idealistic aspirations collide with all manner of obstacles.Oscar Wilde's scathing wit is in evidence throughout. But the story has a a more negatively toned ending than many of his other sparkling and cleverly resolved episodes in the comedy of manners.Large helping of food for thought, but on the bitter side.
