Gunpowder magic, steam-power, adventure, and intrigue... Carrtog, landless third son of Tsingallik and warrior trained in the use of powder magic, intends to make his way as a mercenary for hire. On his travels north, he and his personal guardsman stumble upon the royal christening of an expansion to Cragmor’s burgeoning railway –– in this case a gift from the King as a sign of goodwill to the conquered north of old. When the gathered populace prove they are not there to be pacified, Carrtog isn’t about to standby and do nothing. Cloaks sweep back, swords and pistols are drawn. Luckily for Carrtog, charging in might be his best chance of earning a name. But then the trap springs around the royal party and Carrtog realizes his eagerness may lead to his demise. Worse, if he manages to survive the ensorcelled contraption and rescue the King from the depths of the rebellious north, he might find that holding the King’s favor could prove more dangerous than any duel against a combat magician in the haze of battlefield smoke. He’ll need more than a little wit and inventiveness to survive this uprising. Steam engines, railway lines, gunpowder magic, and the advent of flight merge this flintlock fantasy adventure with the well tested machinations of steampunk –– a true confluence of invention and rebellion.

By Mariesky This was a fast read and the fantasy and slight steam punk elements kept it interesting enough to continue. There were a couple of downsides. Some scenarios get repetitive, both from the trial and error of developing new machines as well as some characters who seem capable of only one type of behavior. I would also have liked to see more context for some events mentioned only in passing, such as prior wars, to better explain the actions of some of the present-day characters. Overall, a nice and fast escape.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced fantasy adventure By Nicholas Mele I don't read much fantasy, but this novel promised and delivered a world wherein magic and technology coexist and reinforce one another, for example, firing a pistol or rifle provides energy for some magic spells, and the protagonist uses a mixture of technology and magic to creat viable gliders. The characters were not well-developed, imo, but the world is interesting and well conceived, the action is almost non-stop, and the title is a play on words. Great read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. OK, not great. My biggest problems with Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion was its repetitiveness By Frank Errington Review copyOn the surface Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion seems like it could be a lot of fun. Part fantasy, part adventure, part steampunk, magic, even a touch of romance. What's not to like? There were a number of things I enjoyed in this work. For example, the story is solid. A magician, named Cartogg, and his armsman come to the aid of the king when he is ambushed at the opening of a railway he has had built for his people. Cartogg proves himself worthy and is soon in the service of the king. It's a good thing the king has Cartogg, since the rebels have magicians of their own. Aside from magic, the magician also shows an aptitude for steam engines and gliders and soon incorporates both into the king's arsenal. My biggest problems with Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion was its repetitiveness. Again and again, throughout the story, Cartogg is worried that he will lose favor with the king and the possible consequences of such an occurrence. I can understand his feelings, but not the author's need to remind us incessantly. The writing is capable, but I found the storytelling to be lackluster. What strengths there were in this book were found in the relationships between the characters. In the end, I'm glad I read Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion, but if there is a sequel I don't think I'd be likely to go there.Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion is available as an e-book from EDGE-Lite, an imprint of Hades Publications, Inc.Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion has been published posthumously, as the author passed away in 2015, my condolences to his family and friends.

For a troubled Chris Griffiths, the last thing on his mind was travel. His world was his dog, Pip. The only borders he crossed were in his garden. The thought of international travel was as alien as going to the moon. So, when he found himself in the vastness of Arizona, it could only mean one thing – disaster. It wasn’t long before he found something that he thought he would never find – peace. There began a love story and an unforgettable journey between one man, one state and the people of that majestic and beautiful part of the world.

He is such an interesting individual who has come so far in his "journey of life". This is an excellent book. I wrote this on November 30th, on the UK Amazon -- repeating it here for us USA types:I have just ordered it, haven't received it yet, but I can tell by the title and cover, AND by having read the first two books (How Grim Was My Valley and The Furry Angel) this will be the most shining of them all he's written so far. THANK YOU MR. CHRIS !!! xxxxAnd now, after delightedly reading the book -- I was right!!! It IS the most shining so far, and truly has the most 'Laugh-out-louds'! I have so many pages marked for the places I like best.In his easy, ambling, sweet-with-underlying-sadness way, Chris takes us by the hand and lets us walk along with him on his wonderful journey. A privilege and a joy to walk with you, Mr. Chris. A nod and a tip o' the hat to ye!

Best Ebook PDF Huguenot Roots-cum-Six Continent Odyssey: Lived, worked 17 years in Africa, 14 years in Muslim countries, adventure travels worldwide, by John Richard Perrott

Huguenot Roots-cum-Six Continent Odyssey (2015) is my 3rd book. My 1st book was to alert the world Bushman of Botswana as seen in the 1986 US version (vs. Afrikaans original) of The Gods Must Be Crazy movie). That’s of our earth’s oldest now endangered human species facing extinction while we are on about spotted owls and snail darters. The Bushman subject is updated in book’s three’s (Cpt 32). My 2nd book was creating a 914 Sq Mi National Park from an offered 63 Sq Mi Mozambique beach peninsula. A development via a 99 year MZB Gov develop-operate land lease concession. But our New Orleans developer threw craps, did not perform. My Save Mozambique’s Elephant Coast (2007) book was to revise our development to a 4000 Sq Mi NP to connecting N with by then the Grand Limpopo Trans Frontier Park (GLTP) the world’s largest at 34,500 Sq Mi (of three country International wildlife NPs). Our 4000 Sq Mi version was all in the UN Maputaland Center of Plant Diversity botanical treasure per the International Biodiversity Accord as created at the Rio 1992 Earth Summit. This story is updated in this book 3’s (Cpt 37) as I try to locate a billionaire to get the 4000 Sq Mi Mozambique and Botswana enlarged wildlife-Bushman NP both going for his (or her) enduring living legacy. Back to this current 2015 book, It is double barreled. It traces family roots back through the 1500s as two million Protestant Huguenots were forced out of France by 16 million French Catholics after Paris’s 1574 Bartholomew Massacre. My roots got from France to UK. Then Protestants English sent them on to Ireland to receive land taken from Irish. My great-great grandfather sailed Cork Ireland to NY in 1824, to get as far west as Michigan. My great grandfather went on west to establish our N Cal cattle ranch. I was of the 4th generation on it with smashing Pacific Ocean view. Our 2nd Cal generation was big in the Save the Redwoods era (world’s up to 379” tallest trees) to save some of the best stands “native and unspoiled for future generations.” My odyssey started with a football scholarship to Oregon State (my folks’ alma mater), then rugby at Cal Berkeley to get my engineering degree. I did military (US Navy flight training), got out early via a Wash DC political “reduction in forces” (RIF). 1958 I joined international Bechtel for 30 plud years of key man on major projects, 17 years in Africa, 14 years in Muslim countries. I was the kickoff Alaska Bechtel site manager on the 800 mile 1970s Arctic to Pacific crude oil 48” diameter pipeline an eventual $8 billion project. Later I provided a revised Bechtel plan to put out the Saddam Hussein’s set 800 1990s Kuwait oil wells. Our plan kept oil burn off at $30 billion loss vs.$90 billion via the original less adroit plan. I killed a man-eating lion in Kenya in 1965 (Outdoor Life cover story Dec 65). I later hunted in Tanzania after finishing Bechtel projects for near a year in the bush in three dry seasons to face a wounded lion charge with a jammed rifle. My real death defying experience was a Cape buffalo charge at 14 paces, to die from my .458 slug at seven paces, elapsed time 0.4 of one second surely thanks to divine intervention. I got more into adventure travel as North Pole in 1988, after two prior year’s trips to Chinese occupied (devastated) Tibet. At North Pole, last 16 miles was in a Soviet military helicopter, for a story inside a story. I scuba dove the Israel Red Sea, then Coral Sea (et al) to face a circling tiger shark (second to Great Whites) on the shark man-eater list. Book gives insights into international pipeline industry, other happening, then adventure travel events as a four day Indian Himalayas white water rafting from 16,000’ (Padum, Zanskar River) down to Indus River at 10,000’, a few other “stranger than fiction’ odyssey events in this non-fiction book. I hope the provided tales proved an interesting reading adventure for those who give it a try.

Huguenot Roots-cum-Six Continent Odyssey: Lived, worked 17 years in Africa, 14 years in Muslim countries, adventure travels worldwide, by John Richard Perrott

About the Author I’m not a literary-journalist-book type per se, rather from an engineering-cum-construction Project Manager career in international pipeline construction (nonfiction) . I was born Sagittarian in Nov 1932, grew up on a Pacific view cattle ranch (4th generation) in northern Cal. I hunted in Africa--killing a Kenya man-eating lion in 1965. Later did international adventure travel shoehorned in between or after construction projects. I attended Oregon State (football), Cal Berkeley (rugby) for a civil engineering degree. After US Navy flight training in Pensacola Florida (1957) a year ahead of Senator John McCain, four of us drove (car ferry) to Cuba on a last fling. We chanced to meet our hero Earnest Hemingway there a year before Castro replaced Batista as Cuba’s ruler. From 1958 on mine was a 30 plus year career of international mega construction odyssey with Bechtel 17 years in Africa in Hemingway’s, Teddy Roosevelt’s haunts dreamed of from childhood. Then 14 years in Muslim countries (Including Indonesia) on every continent but Antarctica. I worked with head hunters in Irian Jaya (W New Guinea). We lost an American guy to anti-government rebels in Columbia and Sumatra each but made successes of difficult projects. This is my 3rd book after earlier Africa-green-cause’ books of (1) Kalahari Bushman in 1992, about (2) creating a huge wildlife National Park in Mozambique in 2007. Both books now belong to created IRS 501( c) (3) not-for-profit causes. See www.savethesan.org (Bushman), www.savemec.org (Save Mozambique’s Elephant Coast). This book revisites both projects in Cpt 32, Cpt 35 as available hoped for international wildlife National Park projects if the right billionaire is enticed to become involved in an enduring-living-legacy’ effort of protecting the sites “native and unspoiled for future generations”. This book is double barreled non-fiction, (1) back to Protestant Huguenots roots in France in the 1500s to USA via our family’s generations stop off in Ireland emigrating to USA in 1824 ahead of the 1840 Irish potato crop failures. Then (2) forward from 1932, in Northern Cal, a worldwide odyssey then into adventure travel, relating more interesting affairs as the 1973 Cape buffalo charge at 14 paces. He died at seven paces, in less than a full second. That’s too much to ever expect otherwise of divine intervention. I hope readers find the selected tales interesting.

Chris Day is a fairly ordinary guy from the UK. He enjoys cycling and has undertaken a number of multi-day cycle tours in the UK, and has also had a long standing fascination with the USA. This, coupled with the fact that he was feeling a bit 'stuck in a rut' in his professional life, somehow caused him in 2013 to take the dramatic - some might say crazy - decision to shake up his life in the most drastic way possible by taking a three month sabbatical from his job and cycling solo across the USA from San Diego to Washington DC. During that time he encountered weather from intense heat to bitter cold, marvelled at the beautiful, diverse landscapes of America and met a myriad of colourful characters. He also experienced intense episodes of self-doubt, isolation, fear and loneliness but was regularly touched by the kindness of strangers and amazed at the way that good fortune seemed to make a habit of falling into his lap whenever he needed it the most. This is his story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Enjoyable! By Bill Rogan I really enjoyed living vicariously through Chris Day's book. Excellent descriptions of his journey made me feel like I was right there with him. It is an inspiring book and the author pours out his emotions, both good and bad. You feel his frustration over flat tires or missing a turn. You feel his love of cycling on days when everything goes according to plan. The planning of and execution of his trip is a must read for anyone who aspires to ride a bike across the United States. Even if you have no desire to pedal across the USA, I have no doubt you will enjoy this fun adventure. Well done Chris.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A bit boring; couldn't finish it By D. M. I am an avid road cyclist. Last year I cycled 5,600 miles on local New England roads. Reading this book makes me NOT want to cycle from point A to point Z across America. The author seemed more interested in getting into his next bathtub and "comfy bed" than riding his bike. I admit it was quite an accomplishment riding across the U.S. but as far as putting his experience into book form, I found it frustrating reading - as a cyclist myself - who so enjoys being on my bike.

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

From AudioFile One sometimes forgets how skilled how skilled a writer Grey was; this is a two-part story of a youth turned gunman turned Texas Ranger. Gene Engene has a choppy vocal style; he is given to unexpected pauses, stresses in odd places, and vocalizations that are not entirely full but inject character all the same. The general pace is slow, but his Western cadences fit this Zane Grey oat opera rather well. Engene is effective in delivering distinctive men's voices, often harsh and guttural; he is not so competent with the women, who all sound pretty much the same. Still, readers/listeners of Westerns will generally like this sharply recorded, quality presentation. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A great adventure yarn By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Practically born with a gun in his hand, it was inevitable that Buck Duane would end up a wanted man. But, even if not a peaceful man, Duane is an honorable one. And now, there is a highly respected Texas Ranger captain on his heels, and this Captain McNally wants a personal meeting with him. It’s been a long and hard life for Buck Duane, and he is no fool, not for the law and not for the outlaws.Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the giants of the Western genre, and this was his fourteenth novel published – by this time he was really hitting his stride. The book itself falls naturally into two parts, almost like two novellas published together. As you would expect with Zane Grey, the main character is tough and unrelenting, and the action is great. So, if you like a good Western, then you will like this book. It’s good, solid Zane Grey – which means that it’s a great adventure yarn that will keep you turning the pages.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. None By V. L. Smith This is the same story as Rustlers of Pecos County. The names are different and it starts with more of a history on the ranger but other than that the plot and most of the dialogue are exactly the same. Good thing it was free or I would be crying foul.

Keep Riding and Enjoying By Amazon Customer As the daughter, girlfriend, and the wife of a motorcycle rider, never a rider but always a passenger I totally enjoyed Stuarts book. His description of events and things were so true to life. I would have to stop reading to wipe away tears as I was laughing so hard, or stop to catch my breath, as I was sure my heart had stopped beating. Although I don't think I have logged near as many miles, I know I haven't but I do know my father sure did, there is a certain call to the open road that nothing can replace. My biggest adventure was a cross Canada trip on the back of my fathers Indian at age 13 that can never be replaced by anything. Stuart, never stop riding, as long as it is safe for you and Carol Ann will let you, and please keep writing of your adventures.

He describes so clearly his emotions and feelings about the reintroduction of motorcycling into his life that I, as a fellow rider, am able to take the journey right along with him. Since, as Dr. Kirk vividly portrays, motorcycling is in large part a social activity, I am pleased to call Stuart a personal friend, who I also ride with. It certainly makes riding a more fulfilling, and all encompassing, passion when there are interesting people to enjoy the time with between rides, over meals, and at the end of a long day on two wheels. Great read. Buy several copies because you will want to share this book with friends while retaining one for yourself.Photo: Dr Kirk and friends pause for a backcountry view of Cochiti Reservoir in northern New Mexico: September 2014

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful read for riders. By Rudy I'm not much of a book reviewer. I love motorcycling as well as hearing and reading about the thoughts and experiences of other riders. This book was written by a MOTORCYCLIST in the vein I use it. Books about how to ride and weight transfer are interesting but this book captures the, hate to use this word, zen of motorcycling some of us experience. Those who haven't at times felt the out of body surreal experiences that occur while riding will still "get" this books idea, but some us relate to the author's experiences in another way. I think I just used a lot of words and not said anything but so be it.

Out of the south the biplane came winging back toward the camp, a black speck against the dazzling white of the vast ice-fields that extended unbroken to the horizon on every side. It came out of the south, and yet, a hundred miles further back along the course on which it flew, it could not have proceeded in any direction except northward. For a hundred miles south lay the south pole, the goal toward which the Travers Expeditions had been pressing for the better part of that year. Not that they could not have reached it sooner. As a matter of fact, the pole had been crossed and re-crossed, according to the estimate of Tommy Travers, aviator, and nephew of the old millionaire who stood fairy uncle to the expedition. But one of the things that was being sought was the exact site of the pole. Not within a couple of miles or so, but within the fraction of an inch. THEOPHANIA PUBLISHING

The Beetle Horde, by Victor Rousseau

About the Author From Wikipedia: Victor Rousseau Emanuel (1879-1960) was a writer of pulp fiction who was active in Great Britain and the United States in the first half of the 20th century. He wrote under the pen names "Victor Rousseau" and "H. M. Egbert". Emanuel first came to the U.S. in 1901. He also lived in Canada from 1912 to 1916, a period during which he wrote most of his best works. Although he began his career as a novelist, he gained popularity for his works of pulp fiction. After an early career as a reporter for the New York World and as an editor of Harper's Weekly, he became a fiction writer. He wrote in a variety of genres, including historical fiction, frontier stories, western romance and crime fiction, but was probably best known as an early exponent of science fiction and fantasy. His best known novels in those genres were The Messiah of the Cylinder, a story of a man placed in suspended animation for 100 years, and The Eye of Balamok, a lost-race novel. Several of his stories were adapted for Western films, and he was the author of one silent film screenplay, The Devil's Tower, based on one of his stories.

"The next moment . . . the hideous monster launched itself into the air straight toward them" By Mark Louis Baumgart After an exploratory trip Tommy Travers and Jim Dodd of the Travers Antarctic Expedition end up back to the expedition's campsite all in a dither as they have made a fantastic find. They have found a giant five foot beetle shell/fossil. The Travers Expedition are searching for the true North Pole, and they are following the path of the disastrous Greystoke Expedition in which the brilliant, insane, and possible junkie Bram was lost. The next day the leader of the expedition gives permission to Travers & Dodd to go back to the spot where they found the beetle's shell and look for more evidence, only the two will then get lost in a whiteout in their biplane, and end up . . . somewhere. Somewhere else, as the plane crashes on a lost tropic landscape in the Antarctic. After the crash the two explorers are separated, and Tommy finds Haidia, a winsome lass, an old man, and Jim, only to be attacked by a bunch of living beetles and all are captured and taken prisoner. Then, after being taken underground to the beetle's hive they are affronted by the still insane Bram, who is in control of the prehistoric insects. There will be a tussle, with Dodd being hurt by Bram, but Haidia will be saved. Bram and his horde live in the underground land of Submundia where Bram keeps the remnants of the native human populace as slaves for breeding, working, and for food for the insects. Soon, Bram will escape from the bowls of the earth bringing trillions of these mad insects with him as he destroys all that he comes across in an effort to create an apocalypse. Forget logic and logistics, "The Beetle Horde" is without a doubt, melodramatic pulp madness at its best. Rapidly paced, and bloody violent at its end, which admittedly is a bit anti-climactic. This is why I became a Victor Rousseau fan in the first place. Yes, he may have been a hack, but like Murray Leinster, Hugh B. Cave, and others, he was often a talented one. This is one of those crazy pulp fictions that lay dormant for a long time until the recent explosion of print-on-demand books. Although they made a ton of movies like this during the fifties, and they have been a staple of the Scy-Fy channel, and the direct to video/disc for decades. Here's your chance to read what sf pulp was like at its beginning. It's got giant man-eating beetles, two feet long eel-like and tentacled piranhas, giant praying mantises, an ego-maniacal drug fiend trying to destroy the world, romance, action, thrills, chills and spills, airplane crashes, people eating insects, insects eating people, mass murder, etc. There's even an element of satire, as Dodd is just as egotistical and as impulsive as the mad Bram as he just can't control his temper, as he shows the emotional maturity of a backward fourteen-year-old. We are treated to Bram and Dodd screaming at each other like a pair of children as they constantly argue some archeological technicality in a Swiftian manner as neither will give an inch, or to give quarter to the other, even if it means the destruction of the world. An example of their arguments go like this: "'You lie! You lie!' screamed Bram. 'I have shown to all the world that phascalotherium, amphitherium, amblotherium, spalacoatherium, and many other orders are to be found Upper Jurassic rocks of England.'" Say what?!? Oh well. This review is based on the "Astounding Stories Of Super-Science" serial and not this chapterbook. Still, lesser authors have turned such material into long-winded tomes and series. Here, it's a short, fast ride. Enjoy. I have also for this site have also reviewed these giant monster books:Crogian by John Leahy. The Cryptid Hunters #1: Cryptid Hunters by Roland Smith. The Cryptid Hunters #2: Tentacles by Roland Smith. The Cryptid Hunters #3: Chupacabra (Cryptid Hunters) by Roland Smith.Dead Sea by Tim Curran.Devils Coach Horse by Richard Lewis.Fangtooth by Shaun Jeffrey. The Lake by R. Gods of Mars is the second novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs' amazing Barsoom series. It is set ten years after The Princess of Mars. John Carter has returned to Mars, but this time he finds himself in the Valley Dor; while some think of it as Heaven, Carter discovers it is more akin to Hell. This edition has a new introduction by World Fantasy Award winner Darrell Schweitzer. Schweitzer, the former Editor of Weird Tales and a pre-emanate scholar of fantastic fiction, places the Barsoom novels in their proper context. These novels will transport you to a lush Mars that never was. A Mars filled with strange and wonderful flora and fauna; giants and monsters; and, most importantly, maidens in distress and fabulous adventures.

The Gods of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Review "Exceedingly well done." ---Library Journal Audio Review

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

Van Court Still naked, still thinking with his muscles, and still sword in hand.Returning to Mars in the second book of the Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series, John Carter finds that his beloved Dejah Thoris has made the journey to the valley of the gods of Mars, a journey without return. He ventures forth to rescue her, meeting old friends, new friends, new enemies, disrupting the religion of Mars, fighting to the death, and hanging from cliffs again. And all his efforts wind up in the supreme cliff-hanger of literary history.Like the first book of the Mars series, A Princess of Mars (Penguin Classics), there are feats of courage and recklessness, non-stop action, cliff hangers, and a complete absense of political correctness.Old school, first rate fun that leaves you ready for the next volume of this light weight adventure.E. M. Van Court

By Pen Name This is, by far, the best book for children dedicated to our Mother Earth. The illustrations and the messages make my skin crawl in a very positive way! Cant wait for my children to enjoy it and all the other kiddos out there!
