Amazon.com Review Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2011: In a return to the eye-popping style of his Caldecott-award winner,The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick’s latest masterpiece, Wonderstruck, is a vision of imagination and storytelling . In the first of two alternating stories, Ben is struck deaf moments after discovering a clue to his father’s identity, but undaunted, he follows the clue’s trail to the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City. Flash to Rose’s story, told simultaneously through pictures, who has also followed the trail of a loved one to the museum--only 50 years before Ben. Selnick’s beautifully detailed illustrations draw the reader inside the museum’s myriad curiosities and wonders, following Ben and Rose in their search for connection. Ultimately, their lives collide in a surprising and inspired twist that is breathtaking and life-affirming. --Seira Wilson

At over 600 pages, Wonderstruck is, physically, a brick of a book but it is filled with poetry of intertwining prose and picture and will, hopefully, leave you as 'Wonderstruck' as it left me.It is 1977 in Gunflint Lake, Minnesota, and Ben Wilson is a young boy who has lost his mother. He now lives with his well-meaning aunt and uncle who are struggling financially, sharing a room with a resentful and bullying cousin, Robby, and wishing for the one thing that he can never have. Robby, partially deaf, has grown up in the sheltered world created by his mom, a single mother and librarian who fed his fascination with outer space and covered their fridge with her favorite quotations, and she isn't coming back. "The North Star was the last star in the tail of the Little Dipper, and the book said that travelers had used this star for centuries to find their way when they were lost. "If you are ever lost," his mom said when he showed her the book, "just find the North Star and it will lead you home." His mom smiled, and pointed to a bulletin board next to her desk. Unlike the refrigerator at home, it had just one quote taped to it. Ben read it out loud: "'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.'" Because his mom was the town librarian, Ben was used to being surrounded by quotes from books, many of which he didn't fully understand. But this one struck him as particularly strange." (p.21-22)One night, while looking up at the stars from the window of his cousin's room, Ben sees a light in his mother's window that, for him, is the beginning of a journey to find what has always been missing from his life.Interspersed with Ben's story is that of a young girl, told only in pictures. Her story begins enigmatically- a small girl sitting at a desk, surrounded by models of skyscrapers which appear to be made after the view from her window of the 1927 New York City skyline. Why does she write a note with the words "Help Me" on it? Is she a prisoner in this room where she must have spent so many painstaking hours creating the models around her? Why does she seem fixated on a famous actress, enough so to climb down the tree outside her window to sneak off to see one of her silent films at the movie theater?Selznick has intricately woven the two stories together- two separate stories that parallel one another so completely they help to tell the other, eventually merging into one larger image. This story will grab you by the heart, break it and then put it back together again and make it want to sing. It is lovely and different- both a work of literature and a work of art. When you pick this book up and flip through it, it will appear to be a sort of overblown picture book. As you read, however, you will find that, while there are more pages of pictures than of text(I mean that seriously- there are 460 pages of artwork out of the 600+, so if you are not interested in a book with a largely graphic component, this may not be for you), the story is richly layered and full of small, important details, both in words and pictures.Even though you will likely find this book classified among the young reader's section and it is a story about two children, the book is like a 'Cabinet of Wonder' that Ben reads about in one of his mother's books- an ornate piece of furniture "with dozens of tiny doors and drawers and hidden spaces filled with a nearly infinite variety of amazing items". Adults should find themselves more than sufficiently challenged to delve into all the symbolism and fine details. Kids and adults will be captured by the compelling prose and beautiful pencil drawings- I went back and looked at various pictures often several times, sometimes scanning for more clues, more details, but often just to marvel at the story unfolding in front of me.I cannot wait to share this with my 8 and 11 year-old daughters- my 11-year-old has already absconded with it but I think we will be reading it again, storybook style, as a family over the next few days. This is the kind of book that provides a strong argument against getting rid of 'real' books in favor of e-books. I know this will be among my more treasured volumes and will remain on my shelf, even as I cull other books from the 'herd'. I hope that readers will not pass on this because it looks too much like a 'children's book', really, I believe it is an 'everyone's book'.

Awestruck at "Wonderstruck" By James Hiller Many of my friends are just discovering Brian Selznick's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, perhaps because of the movie coming out in a few months time. In that delightful tale, we are whisked away to a Parisian train station, a boy with a few secrets, an even more secretive marvelous machine, and the redemptive powers of it all. Selznick somehow managed to blend a few of my favorite things in that story (trains! silent movies! kids!) into quite a modern and engaging story. The question is: would lightening strike again? The answer is, I'm so happy to report, a resounding yes. "Wonderstruck" is a blessing, a marvel, another masterstroke from this author/artist.In this book, we meet Ben, deaf in one ear, mourning the loss of his librarian mother from icy roads in Northern Minnesota in the 1970's. Living with aunt and uncle now, Ben longs to unlock many of his own mysteries, from his dreaming about wolves to the identity of his father. Ben starts his journey by returning one night to his house, in which going through his mother's things, he uncovers many things she had kept hidden from him, which soon launches his quest. In a second story, told not through text but pictures, we meet Rose, a girl living in 1920's New Jersey with views of New York City, who is starstruck by a silent film actress and longs to see her. Wonderstruck tells and shows the stories of these two people in ways that surprise and delight the reader through the story, none of which shall be revealed here.Selznick does many things in this book that, beyond the marvelous story he tells, show true craftsmanship. First, as it was true with Hugo Cabret, his illustrations are heartfelt and glorious. As an artist, he understands the importance of the eyes, and in each of his drawings that have characters in them, you are immediately drawn to them. It's so reflective of silent films, in which the performers told the stories with their eyes. Secondly, he starts Ben's and Rose's stories in two different ways: Ben uses words, Rose uses pictures. While the stories are occurring in different decades, he skillfully blends the end of one part of the first story, and seemingly starts the second one at a similar spot. I didn't notice he was doing this until halfway through the book, and by then, I was sold on his brilliance.Wonderstruck manages to take some more of my interests and blends them together: New York City, museums, dioramas, and Minnesota (that's where I was born). In fact, as I was reading this book, on my coffee table sits a book about the dioramas in the American Museum of Natural History: Windows on Nature: The Great Habitat Dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History. It's odd how life arranges itself to coincide with stories. Finally, a friendship forms between Ben and another boy (details not to be revealed here!) that so touched me, that it brought out the theme that Selznick always dwells on: relationships.I can't recommend this book highly enough; it's filled with honest people, real emotions, and at its heart, the human relationships we all strive to thrive upon. This is the book of the year.

Ben has to share a room with his annoying cousin who makes fun of him for being born deaf in one ear even though his old house--the cottage he shared with his mom--is right down the road. Ben is drawn back to the cottage as strongly as he is to the wolves that chase him in his dreams. When a clue about the father he's never met points to New York City, Ben knows he has to follow it.In 1927, Rose is suffocating at home with her father in Hoboken, New Jersey. All Rose wants is to be able to go out by herself, like the other kids, and to watch Lillian Mayhew in silent films. When Rose learns that sound is coming to the movies and that Lillian Mayhew is starring in a play right across the river in New York City, how can she stay away? Will New York City reveal its secrets for Ben and Rose? Will either of them find what they're searching for in Wonderstruck (2011) by Brian Selznick?Wonderstruck is Selznick's second book told in words and pictures like his Caldecott winning The Invention of Hugo Cabret. In this book Ben's story in words intertwines in surprising ways with Rose's story told through pictures.Although the format is still brilliant and the story is once again clever and utterly original Wonderstruck lacks some of the verve and guileless charm of Hugo Cabret. The story is messier with a more immediate sense of loss and details that never tie together quite as neatly as they did in Selznick's earlier novel.*New York's American Museum of Natural History plays a prominent role in this story adding a nice to dimension to the story that will make it especially appealing for some readers** but Wonderstruck felt very busy as though it was tackling too much in one book. That is not to say that Brian Selznick is not a genius. He is--that fact is beyond debate. He combines words and pictures in a new way reinventing the whole idea of printed stories and blurring the line between prose fiction and picture books. His books are also always filled with historical details and facts that are well documented in a bibliography at the end of the story. Wonderstruck is a particularly find pick for anyone with an interest in New York City or museums.*I'm thinking particularly of Jamie's behavior in the book. Also the fact that Ben never felt much of a loss after the lightning strike. Did anyone else find that odd?**Like everyone who went to my grade school in 1993. Our building had asbestos so for a few months while it was being removed my entire school was bussed to the AMNH and we had classes there. We ate lunch under the whale every day. True story.Possible Pairings: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler by E. L. Konigsburg, Holes by Louis Sachar, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

Waterford, home to two rivers and three canals, conjures up images of and involvement in water by its very name. The native population enjoyed the bounty of the waters for subsidy and transportation. Europeans arrived by boat, seeking a passageway to the West, and their journey ended in Waterford. Early settlers realized the ability to ford the rivers and found the soil bountiful from frequent overflow. As land was farmed and developed, rivers were dammed for transport and harnessed for power, and canals were channeled. Water was being utilized but never truly controlled, as the floods of many seasons have demonstrated. The water in this area is a gift, but it can at times create great devastation. Waterfordians, from the pre-Columbian era to the present day, have learned to respect the power of the rivers.

  • Great Expectations is Charles Dickens's thirteenth novel and his penultimate completed novel; a bildungsroman which depicts the personal growth and personal development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. It is Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. The novel was first published as a serial in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes. It is set among marshes in Kent, and in London, in the early to mid-1800s,and contains some of Dickens' most memorable scenes, including the opening, in a graveyard, where the young Pip is accosted by the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch. Great Expectations is full of extreme imagery – poverty; prison ships and chains, and fights to the death – and has a colourful cast of characters who have entered popular culture. These include the eccentric Miss Havisham, the beautiful but cold Estella, and Joe, the kind and generous blacksmith. Dickens's themes include wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil. Great Expectations is popular both with readers and literary critics, and has been translated into many languages, and adapted numerous times into various media. Upon its release, the novel received near universal acclaim.Thomas Carlyle spoke disparagingly of "all that Pip's nonsense". Later, George Bernard Shaw praised the novel, as "All of one piece and consistently truthfull." During the serial publication, Dickens was pleased with public response to Great Expectations and its sales; when the plot first formed in his mind, he called it "a very fine, new and grotesque idea".

Amazon.com Review Dickens considered Great Expectations one of his "little pieces," and indeed, it is slim compared to such weighty novels as David Copperfield or Nicholas Nickleby. But what this cautionary tale of a young man raised high above his station by a mysterious benefactor lacks in length, it more than makes up for in its remarkable characters and compelling story. The novel begins with young orphaned Philip Pirrip--Pip--running afoul of an escaped convict in a cemetery. This terrifying personage bullies Pip into stealing food and a file for him, threatening that if he tells a soul "your heart and your liver shall be tore out, roasted and ate." The boy does as he's asked, but the convict is captured anyway, and transported to the penal colonies in Australia. Having started his novel in a cemetery, Dickens then ups the stakes and introduces his hero into the decaying household of Miss Havisham, a wealthy, half-mad woman who was jilted on her wedding day many years before and has never recovered. Pip is brought there to play with Miss Havisham's ward, Estella, a little girl who delights in tormenting Pip about his rough hands and future as a blacksmith's apprentice. I had never thought of being ashamed of my hands before; but I began to consider them a very indifferent pair. Her contempt for me was so strong, that it became infectious, and I caught it. It is an infection that Pip never quite recovers from; as he spends more time with Miss Havisham and the tantalizing Estella, he becomes more and more discontented with his guardian, the kindhearted blacksmith, Joe, and his childhood friend Biddy. When, after several years, Pip becomes the heir of an unknown benefactor, he leaps at the chance to leave his home and friends behind to go to London and become a gentleman. But having expectations, as Pip soon learns, is a two-edged sword, and nothing is as he thought it would be. Like that other "little piece," A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations is different from the usual Dickensian fare: the story is dark, almost surreal at times, and you'll find few of the author's patented comic characters and no comic set pieces. And yet this is arguably the most compelling of Dickens's novels for, unlike David Copperfield or Martin Chuzzlewit, the reader can never be sure that things will work out for Pip. Even Dickens apparently had his doubts--he wrote two endings for this novel. --Alix Wilber

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—A young man's burning desire to fulfill his "great expectations" of fame and fortune is presented in Charles Dickens's classic tale of love, madness, forgiveness, and redemption. Simon Vance's masterful narration brings to life such diverse personalities as Miss Havisham, the old woman who was abandoned on her wedding day and is determined to wreak revenge through her beautiful adopted daughter Estella; Joe, Pip's lumbering and slow-witted, but emotionally wise and faithful friend; the mysterious Magwitch, a convict who turns out to be Pip's financial benefactor; and Pip, the boy who longs for a destiny greater than that of living out his days as a blacksmith's apprentice. The companion ebook features automatic start-up, keyword searching, PDF printable format, and table of contents. An exceptionally skilled rendering of this classic.—Cindy Lombardo, Cleveland Public Library, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Although I don't think it should be "forced" on schoolchildren (they will only hate it) I read this novel when I was a child and I loved it. I have just re-read it now and I enjoy it all the more. This is my favorite novel by Dickens. It is from his later period and is criticized for being too dark - which, however, makes it more perfect for today's sensibilities. Stephen King cites this work as one of his favorites: he believes that it is this book that brought the gothic novel mainstream. Was there ever a novelist who created more memorable characters than Dickens? Here, we meet perhaps his most intriguing - Miss Havisham. For anyone unfamiliar with the story, I will not spoil it by describing her. The story is similar to parable about the prodigal son - good Pip inexplicably comes into some money and goes off to the corrupting city.AN IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE: Dickens wrote two ending for this book. His friends thought that the original ending was too downbeat and they asked him to come up with a different one. It is the upbeat ending that is the official ending of the novel. However, most critics agree that the original unpublished ending is better. Most modern editions feature the unpublished ending in an appendix. MAKE SURE YOU BUY A COPY THAT CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL ENDING!

132 of 142 people found the following review helpful. One of the Greatest Novels Ever Written By Anne Rice Why do I come here to "review" this? It isn't anyone's book club selection, no. But tonight I want to talk about this incomparably rich and wonderful book, and how as a fourteen year old kid I simply sank into it, taking it slowly week by week, glorying in its mysteries, its great grotesque portrait of Miss Havisham in her rotting bridal finery, its often painful recounting of a young boy's awakening to a seductive world beyond the blacksmith's forge to which destiny has condemned him. This book was about me. It was about wanting to learn, wanting to transcend, wanting to achieve while anything and everything seems hopelessly beyond one's dreams. Of course life changes for Pip. And the world Pip enters was a world that dazzled me and only made my adolescent ambitions burn all the more hurtfully. I think this book is about all who've ever tried for more, ever reached for the gold ring -- and it's about some, of course, who've gotten it. It's also a wondrous piece of storytelling, a wondrous example of how in the first person ("I am, etc." ) a character can tell you more about himself than he himself knows. What a feat. And a very strange thing about this book, too, was the fact that Dickens said more about Pip and Pip's dreams than Dickens knew he was doing. Dickens himself didn't quite realize, I don't think, the full humanity of the character he created. Yet the character is there -- alive, captivating, engaging us throughout with full sympathy. Go for it. If you never read anything else by Charles Dickens, read and experience this book. Afterwards, David Copperfield will be a ride in the sunshine, I assure you. And both books will stand by you forever. For whom am I writing this? For myself perhaps just because Pip meant and still means so much. For some one perhaps who's unsure about this book and needs a push to dive into a classic. Oh, is this book ever worth the effort. -. Enough. Read it, know it.

    From the Back Cover

In his classic espionage thriller The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan introduced Richard Hannay, an appealing antihero with the intelligence and daring to thwart a conspiracy involving British secrets and German spies. Greenmantle, the second in Buchan's five-part series of spy novels, reintroduces the intrepid secret agent Hannay. Tasked by the Foreign Office with investigating a rumored uprising in the Muslim world, Hannay and his associates must prevent Germany and its Turkish partners from turning the tide of World War I by launching a jihad against the Allies.Buchan's fast-paced tale of pursuits and escapes takes readers across war-torn Europe and behind enemy lines from Vienna to Constantinople and the Russian front. Written in lean, contemporary prose, this gripping novel offers an action-packed and remarkably topical tale of Middle Eastern politics and intrigue.Dover (2015) republication of the edition originally published by the George H. 47 of 48 people found the following review helpful. Racy espionage thriller By TheIrrationalMan "Greenmantle", by John Buchan, is actually based on a remarkable, if little-known, aspect of German propaganda during World War I. It involved Kaiser Wilhelm declaring himself a convert to Islam, a leader of "jihad", as a tactic for winning the support of the Muslim territories under British control and thus fomenting an anti-British revolution. Richard Hannay, Buchan's intrepid hero from "The Thirty-Nine Steps", is the man entrusted to stop this plan from being carried out, and his adventure takes him from London, to Holland and Turkey and finally to the Russian border for a spectacular climax. Complaints have been made about Buchan's racist and jingo-imperialist biases, as the novel easily betrays the sentiments of a la "dominion over palm and pine." However, a fiction-writer may, under a certain poetic license, attack creeds, doctrines, persons and institutions with impunity; moreover, a writer must be seen as a product of his age. This racy, lively, energetic novel is best appreciated as an excellent work of light literature. The conclusion is an undeniably exciting confrontation, including the charge of Cossack cavalry, as Hannay engages in the final showdown between the two German villains, the gross Stumm and the evil beauty, Hilda von Einem.

Rabideau ...and a harmless read (recommended for train trips through particularly tedious or repetitive countryside, or long plane flights spent wedged into economy class). "Greenmantle" is another of Buchan's Richard Hannay novels (the same protagonist as in "The Thirty-Nine Steps"); in it Hannay must track and foil a plot by the Kaiser to foment Jihad. I confess to being particularly drawn to this book as, well, an example of WWI-era pulp. It is sufficiently plot-driven, and entertaining enough to while happily away a few hours. Decidedly fun.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A great little spy novel By A Customer This story is a strange one if you do not understand the world as it was during the confusing times of World War One. However, if you are reading this book simply for enjoyment, you picked a good one. It is a little rascist, but if only you consider the time it was written and the beliefs then, I don't think you can consider it a bad book. It is not proper to judge a book written in the early twentieth century by our current standards of political correctness. It is simply a good indicator of past views of various people. If you don't mind the little rascism this book has and remember that it was written when that was perfectly normal, you should enjoy it immensely.

Amulet II: The Gallic War is the second installment of Fredrik Naths Roman Empire Series and further follows the life of the soldier Aulus Veridius Scapula who not only has now become a strong warrior in his own right but still knows vasts secrets about Romans elite ruling class and has further plans to profit off of them. While he has been living comfortably from the life that he has made for himself he discovers that true power, wealth, and freedom is a single amulet away. The amulet stolen by his cousin Marcus.Once more we are delivered into a world under siege and while Aulus is in the invading party he soon fails in his mission for Caesar and has to return home in disgrace. Without the full vestiges of his office Aulus has more problems thrown in front of him and the suspense quickly builds as he is in a race against the clock to find his cousin before its too late. While I usually pickup alternate historical fiction that adds a huge science fiction element that changes the past, this was a well written read that was truly fun to dive into. From the intrigue of Roman politics to the war that Aulus finds himself in to the drama of dealing with his brother there is something constantly going on which will give you a nonstop adventure to read through.A fantastic piece of historical fiction!Disclaimer: I received a digital copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An engaging, historical book with a science fiction twist. By Shannon Luster Amulet II, written by author Fredrik Nath, centers around a warrior, Anulus. He wants to retrieve the amulet that once belonged to him before his cousin, Marcus, claimed it for his very own by stealing it. That special amulet has powers that could make Anulus a wealthy man and could very well help him with the relationship with his love interest, the lovely Aripele. But at the risk of revealing too much about the story, I will say no more about that.Set in the backdrop of ancient Rome along with a surprising science fiction twist, Amulet II transports this reader to that era that Nath creates by his use of vivid description throughout the book.Although this is the second book that Nath wrote in this series, it was also easy enough for me to follow along with the story. In other words, I did not have to first read the first of the books in this series to understand Amulet II.Overall, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for the reasons above.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. With beautiful Aripele waiting for him By nannaleigh1110 This historical adventure is full of action. It takes place during the height of Rome. 25 year old Anulus is a soldier who is trying to get his amulet back. His evil cousin has stolen it from him after almost killing him, but Anulus is back. The amulet holds the key to much wealth. With beautiful Aripele waiting for him, the possibility of riches and much desired revenge he has much to fight for. This is the second book in the series but you will not feel lost in the story if you begin reading here. This is an enjoyable book to peruse. It will keep you reading.

It's definitely a novel. But novels can be predictive: this one is predictive. While this reviewer does not agree with the premise of mankind's demise, the prediction that man will be eliminated via war, (conventional and nonconventional) is agreeable with ancient theological writings, as near as 2000 years ago. The Book of Revelation describes mankind's demise, as well as the Old Testament descriptions of the Middle East as being the setting and origin of the world's worst "annihilation" imaginable, or non-imaginable. Read it. Enjoy the dark side, but remember, this book is a gut feeling about mankind's demise, not all it predicts is true in the strictest sense.

  • The Rainbow Trail, also known as The Desert Crucible, is Western author Zane Grey's sequel to Riders of the Purple Sage. Originally published under the title The Rainbow Trail in 1915, it was re-edited and re-released in recent years as The Desert Crucible with the original manuscript that Grey submitted to publishers. The novel takes place ten years after events of Riders of the Purple Sage. The wall to Surprise Valley has broken, and Jane Withersteen is forced to choose between Lassiter's life and Fay Larkin's marriage to a Mormon. Both novels are notable for their protagonists' mild opposition to Mormon polygamy, but in The Rainbow Trail this theme is treated more explicitly. The plots of both books revolve around the victimization of women in the Mormon culture: events in Riders of the Purple Sage are centered on the struggle of a Mormon woman who sacrifices her wealth and social status to avoid becoming a junior wife of the head of a local church, while The Rainbow Trail contrasts the older Mormons with the rising generation of Mormon women who will not tolerate polygamy and Mormon men who do not seek it.

Review "Poignant in its emotional qualities." --The New York Times

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

From AudioFile In the hands of reader Ian Esmo, this introspective early Western involving Utah and the Mormons is slow and methodical. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

It is the author's description of Red Lake, Kayenta, and Tsegi among others that makes this book so interesting. My Doctor told me about it, I bought it and have been passing it around to other people in town. Sorry Amazon. Sometimes the story drags a bit but that is Zane Grey. Sometimes his treatement of the Navajo is a bit stereotyped. Come to the four corners, stay awhile. Hike among the canyons and mesas. Get to know the people. Than read the book. You'll get much more out of it. There's an isolated cliff dwelling out here (somewhere near Tsegi Canyon, no more hints) where Zane Grey carved his name into the sandstone. He writes a pretty good description of the area and its people.

Vaughan This is a sequel to the classic "Riders of the Purple Sage," though the main characters from that book do not enter the plot till very near the end. Like the first book, this book is also a romance set in the west, but much of the time the characters and the plot are subordinate to the setting, and even when the characters and their actions take center stage, they have been changed through their experiences in the "crucible of the desert." Zane Grey wrote of the land through which he traveled and the people he met. Though much of the characterization is out of step with modern expectations and sensibilities, there is yet a strong sense of verisimilitude to them. The characters tend to fall into three categories -- Mormons, Gentiles (any white who is not Mormon), and Indians, and among those three groups we have characters who range from very noble and self-sacrificing to extremely evil and destructive. John Shefford has come from the East, wide-eyed and naive, and very quickly discovers that the sensibilities of his cultivated upbringing are definite detriments to his survival in the Canyon Country of the West. Having heard the story of Lassiter, one of the protagonists in "Riders of the Purple Sage," he is searching for the man, as well as young Fay Larkin. That search exposes him to experiences that burn away the chaff of his former life and reveal his true character, teaching him the meaning of truth, friendship, loyalty, honor and love, traits he thought he understood, but really did not. This is an extremely enjoyable book, and those who come to it expecting nothing more than a standard Western or "horse opera" will be pleasantly surprised.

Classic sequel to the great Zane Grey Western Riders of the Purple Sage By 49sim67 Classic sequel to the great Zane Grey Western Riders of the Purple Sage. This book closes the loop holes left open at the end of the initial book of this two book series. These two books are not only some of the best in the genre but also just great literature in their own right. Grey is a fantastic writer, and he paints a vivid picture in the minds eye concerning the countryside he is describing - in this case the canyon country of southwest Utah and northwest Arizona. If you have a Kindle you can't beat the price and even if you don't this book is well worth getting your hands on a paper copy. Good reading; be happy and stay young.

It shines light upon two aspects of slavery largely overlooked in modern writing: the vast difference between slavery in the colonial era versus slavery in the Antebellum South, as well as the experiences of the thousands of white, Catholic Irish slaves brought over during and immediately after the English Civil War. Historically accurate in the events surrounding the characters, Dees writes a story that is entertaining, engaging to young readers, and historically accurate. It is a great beginning to what should be a terrific and educational series regarding not just slavery in the colonial South, but life in the colonies in general.

Only in the Bayou State do Louisianans travel door to door on horseback collecting gumbo ingredients for Mardi Gras gatherings. Residents compete in egg pâquer contests to see who can crack their opponent’s Easter egg first. Louisiana is a place where frequent collisions with natural disasters can inspire a drink like Pat O’Brien’s famous hurricane. And the state’s history is filled with colorful figures like Governor Earl K. Long, whose wife committed him to a mental institution—only for him to use his political pull to inspire his own release. Elsewhere these accounts may seem odd or farfetched, but it all happens in Louisiana. Join author Sam Irwin as he details these intriguing Pelican State stories with pithy observations, humorous asides and droll determinations.

About the Author D. P. Brown is Dan Brown, a 30-year veteran of newspaper and radio. He is not THAT Dan Brown, even though he was born first. A three-time humor columnist of the year, four-time sports columnist of the year, and multi-award winning writer and photographer, Dan is the consummate storyteller. BLINK! is his sixth novel, a suspense thriller, joining Locked Hearts, The Lunch Box, Broken, Rain King and A Faerie's Tear on D. P. Brown's ever growing list of published novels. He has been called, “The most romantic man on the face of the Earth," and paints pictures with a pen for a brush and a Thesaurus for a palette. Readers "see" Dan's stories come alive off the page. While not writing novels, Dan is an award winning humor, sports columnist and photographer. A lifelong newspaper man, his stories can be found in the Aiken Standard these days. His stories are love stories, each with their own Happily Ever After. While Yankee by birth, Dan is Southern by the grace of God, and his stories are woven with the rich fabric of classic Southern fiction.

BLINK! was the result of a bad dream I had one night about 8 months ago where everyone I made eye contact wanted to kill me with extreme prejudice. It was one of those great pursuit dreams. I stewed on the dream for a few months, adding a little light Sci-Fi to it in how this anomaly happened and what other side effects happened with it, and then started writing the first of August. Six weeks later a 353 page story was finished, the end result what you see here. I liked writing it, and reading it, about 20 times during revisions. It still sounded fresh, and plausible.I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.And I apologize for the gratuitous self-plug.

A mystery, a love story. Jackie Lee is a German Shepherd and his handler is Casey Lane. Together they have a detective agency and trying to do a favor for a friend might cause them to lose their lives. This is Jackie Lee's story, told my a German Shepherd Dog. Does Casey also lose the one she loves? "Casey!" "Yes, Steve?" "You're beautiful, I love you, it's true. Since the first time, I saw your face. I don't know if we will ever be together again, it's true, but just know that you're beautiful and you will go far in life. I will always and forever love you and Jackie Lee, Captain too." Then Steve turned around with tears in his eyes. I looked at Casey and she was crying so hard she couldn't say anything back to him right away. Then she said, "Steve we are going to make it, hang in there. I'm not losing you yet." The roof ripped off and Casey and I were blown out!
