The drug wars have left 160,000 dead in the past six years. But the war is no closer to an end. . Each time the Mexican police make some headway, the cartels gain more sophisticated arms and tactics. While the federales vastly outnumber them, the cartels seem to anticipate their every move. Into that maelstrom walks Paul Decker and his new family. Paul has retired from the CIA and desires no more than to raise his family, regain his peace of mind, and fulfill the promises he has made to Lydia and the children…promises he failed to complete with his first family. But all that comes to a violent end on the streets of Ciudad Juarez. Paul goes after the killers, however, what he learns makes his revenge seem small and personal in perspective. The Cartels are being armed and provided intelligence by the ATF and DEA who desire to foment violence in order to build their organizations and become indispensable. The U.S. Administration is seeking to use the violence as an excuse to pass gun legislation in the U.S. and will go even further – declaring Mexico a failed state and take over the country. Even with all his training, Paul is no match for the cartels. And so he teams up with Gabriella - a brave female Mexican Federale – and an elite team of Spetnaz troops from Russia. Together, they are intent on taking down the cartels, restoring the rule of law to Mexico and bringing peace to the country. The war on drugs is really a war to maintain the drug trade…even if the cost is another one hundred thousand lives. As Paul and his team close in on the rogue forces in the U.S. government and the cartels, the forces aligned against them grow stronger and more determined.

War on Drugs - Corruption By DeJaan LaFleur There is something so real and intense about this book, the war on drugs is really a war to maintain the drug trade at the cost of human lives. This book is the story about Paul Decker, who is a retired CIA. He was vacationing in Mexico with his wife Lydia and their two children, it was the family’s yearly visit to Lydia’s parents. For the kids, it meant Christmas in July. For Paul, it was the culmination of things, a life’s wish, to have a second chance to be a good husband, to raise his children without excuses. But all that came to a violent end on the streets of Ciudad Juarez where his wife was killed senselessly, by a narcotraficantes. Looks like the bad guys had superior weapons compared to the Federales.Later to find out that these Drug Cartels were being armed by the ATF and DEA who desire to foment violence in order to build their organizations and become indispensable.I personally love that the author view on the war on drugs. The reader got to feel this situation from the point of view of the importance of family and friendship to the responsibility we have as citizens of our world to protect. This is a must read.

Well, "To Live and Die in Juarez" brings this to a whole other level. You will immediately be taken into the story, and I think a lot of that has to do with the author using Spanish words so that you feel like you are really there. The story centers around Paul Decker, who is a retired CIA agent. I think he is a good choice for the main character because is immediately likable and a family man. But he is a complicated character because it is clear he used to put work before family time. Well, while he is on vacation, things come to a head. Unfortunately, violence finds Decker and, without giving anything away, Decker gets pulled back in.To what extent will Decker get pulled back in? Will he ultimately be successful? It is so intense that you will not put the book down until you get these questions answered.

By Nelly We have all heard stories of Juarez Mexico, some of us have even seen the movies but nothing will prepare you for the intense action taking place in this story. I was a bit taken aback by the story and the creative way the author decided to write it. Usually I can expect a predictable chain of events in stories like these but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself being taken on a journey into the life of Paul Decker. The vivid descriptions further sold the story to me and I must confess that I will never think of Juarez the same again. This action packed book is great for those who like to live a little on the edge. It will keep you wide awake and like myself, you won't be able to stop reading until the book is finished.

He wanted me to read it to him 3 times. We had to stop to eat dinner, otherwise I would probably still be reading it. I could tell from my grandson's comments that he understood how street sweepers work. I'm looking forward to the next time a street sweeper comes through the neighborhood and my grandson sees it.

  • Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. The pamphlet explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence in clear, simple language. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution, and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time were surrounding the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history. As of 2006, it remains the all-time best selling American title. Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in an easily understood style. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, relying on biblical references to make his case. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era".

Amazon.com Review "These are the times that try men's souls," begins Thomas Paine's first Crisis paper, the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing equality of rights among citizens. Paine fanned a flame that was already burning, but many historians argue that his work unified dissenting voices and persuaded patriots that the American Revolution was not only necessary, but an epochal step in world history.

Review “No writer has exceeded Paine in ease and familiarity of style; in perspicuity of expression, happiness of elucidation, and in simple unassuming language.” —Thomas Jefferson

Review "Edward Larkin's new edition of Common Sense will be welcomed by readers. With a lively and detailed introduction, thorough scholarly notes, and a representative selection of the contemporaneous responses it provoked, this should become the definitive new edition of Paine's classic tract." (Richard Boyd )"The big problem with Paine is that current readers have trouble seeing why his ideas did not seem so common-sensical to eighteenth-century people. Larkin addresses this problem with supplementary texts that focus on the debate over independence in America; along with his interesting and approachable introduction, the combination makes for the best edition of Paine's Common Sense available." (Daniel Vickers )"There are many fine editions of this indispensable American text. But this one is richer and more rewarding than the others. It invites readers to encounter Common Sense in the fullness of its historical setting. And as it does, it makes plain how utterly Tom Paine towered above all other Revolutionary writers." (Michael W. Zuckerman )"Edward Larkin's new edition of Tom Paine's Common Sense will be a boon to teachers and students. It thoughtfully contextualizes Paine's pamphlet while highlighting the singularity of his voice. Most importantly, it will aid students in placing Common Sense in that absolutely central eighteenth-century culture war: the beginning of the unfinished argument over modern democracy." (Michael Meranze )

332 of 340 people found the following review helpful. Uncommon Sense By William Brennan Common Sense is one of the greatest articles of argumentation ever written. Paine was the finest pamphleteer of his age and was able to turn the discontents of the colonists and, especially, the intellectual leaders of the revolutionary movement into arguments that were easily understood by ordinary colonials and which inspired them to rally to the cause of independence.I first read Common Sense more than fifty years ago and remember well being impressed with Paine's ability to carry arguments and to anticipate those of his opponents before his tract even hit the street. Over the course of my lifetime, I was inspired by the author and became a pamphleteer of sorts myself. I always told my colleagues that I wanted to become a poor man's Tom Paine. But after reading the piece once again, I realize that almost all who aspire to follow in his footsteps, if not fill his shoes, are doomed to become but very poor copies of the original.Other reviewers have noted the fluidity of his writing; it reads as simply, directly and forcefully today as it must have nearly a quarter of a millennium ago. Obviously, one did not have to be a great reader to be swayed by the force of Paine's words or to be inspired to the side of those wishing to throw off the English yoke.I was struck by echoes of Paine in many great American speeches that were running through my mind as I read. A number of quotes from Robert F. Kennedy seemed to have been directly inspired by Common Sense, and I hastily looked them up and offer these two for your consideration:"It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.""All of us might wish at times that we lived in a more tranquil world, but we don't. And if our times are difficult and perplexing, so are they challenging and filled with opportunity."The Declaration of Independence itself is a direct offspring of this great tract. Jefferson and the others charged with developing the document were well aware of Paine and had the opportunity to evaluate his words and to use his methods in creating our declaration, and this takes nothing away from their genius. This is a document that can be read in short order, and it is free at the Kindle Store. How can you say no to giving it a try?

145 of 150 people found the following review helpful. Enlightening, Revolutionary, and Worth a Read By R. DelParto In an unrelenting quest to understanding the history of the United States, one obscure name comes to mind, Thomas Paine. Paine helped establish the meaning of democracy and the "united" in United States. His two monumental works, COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN, provided the philosophical and rhetorical building blocks that the founding fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, et al., would emulate with the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Many take for granted the origins of freedom and democracy in the United States, and as with many school history textbooks depict, Paine merely appears in a paragraph or two, and quickly disappears to historical oblivion.Nevertheless, when one reads COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN: AND OTHER ESSENTIAL WRITINGS OF THOMAS PAINE, there will be no doubt how significant his philosophical and political writings transformed the political structure of the colonies. Although this may sound somewhat romanticized, Paine's words ignited the energy for the colonists to free themselves from the tyrannical-monarchical leadership of England's King George III. With all the talk of Paine being a founding father, he may also be considered the father of revolution, American Revolution and French Revolution, and human rights. Without the inspiration from his friend Edmund Burke, author of REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, Paine may not have been able to write the pamphlet Rights of Man. Indeed, his power of the written word translated to revolutionary action, and Jeffersonian ideology. In clear and no nonsense language, Paine's perspective of the state of the colonies are elaborately told in COMMON SENSE. He adamantly shows his opposition toward hereditary rule and limitations imposed on individuals by George III and his vehement disdain towards aristocrats and kings. For RIGHTS OF MAN, he proposed possible solutions toward poverty, and created a blueprint towards achieving social and political institutions through his written abstracts. The other essential writings include the pamphlets, THE CRISIS, part one of THE AGE OF REASON, and selections of AGRARIAN JUSTICE. These writings gives readers an idea the political and religious atmosphere in which Paine lived, and how "breaking ties" with the so-called "motherland" was necessary towards forging a free nation.COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN is indeed accessible with its pocketbook size form. After reading the book, readers may have a better understanding of what it takes to build a nation. Paine's words are lessons of history and humanity, and is definitely recommendable reading.

104 of 110 people found the following review helpful. more than history By A Customer I read the other reviews and while I agree with them, I must add that this book is more than history. I remember reading Paine's critique of the English government being "so exceedingly complex" that when a problem developed, politicians would fight for years deciding whose fault it was. Finally, when they would try to solve the problem, everyone had a different solution. I thought I was reading an editorial from USNews. I was amazed that many problems that incited the colonies to revolt are now present in our new government. Read this as more than great history. Read it as political science, and public commentary.

Unless they are hellenium flowers, worn in the lapels of suitjackets. Run, Tex, run!!"Tex" Charles Ravenscroft is an Indiana Jones sort of guy, with much of his luck, skill, and tenacity in looking for long-disappeared artifacts or civilizations. His job this time is to find the "Tears of Poseidon," hoping they will unlock the secrets to the long lost city of Atlantis. The more adventures Tex has, the more he realizes just how advanced, even beyond today's knowledge, the Atlanteans were.Unfortunately, Tex has to fight human and supernatural enemies at every turn. I was dizzy just trying to keep up with him. I desperately wanted to figure out before him who the real friends/enemies are:Jeannette, former lover and escaped from dead; tantalizing Lena, who can read Atlantean, but is certain to leave Tex without his treasure once they are found; the Knights of Solomon; or even Tex's boss, Dr. Reid.Just as I thought Tex and I had endured every curve and cliff the Viguiés could toss our way, and the answer was sure to come, bam! Typical of Debbie Viguié, the book stops on a cliffhanger, and I am left begging for more. You will be too, if you get involved in Tex's clandestine mission!! Not to be missed!!

The characters seem one dimensional, there is action and constant movement, but it still didn't seem to matter. I guess the action was told rather than described in a way to involve the reader, but it didn't create any concern in the reader for the characters in the story.

Watching the news, we may think that Muslims are cruel, blood-thirsty fanatics, but Muslims come in many different persuasions. The welding apprentices studying English with Elaine in Bangladesh were suspicious at first (Are you going convert us?), the men at Dhaka University and her hotel were craving American green cards (Beautiful lady, you marry me, yes?) but she soon won their hearts as she taught English and shared their lives. Over five years, she learned that, like any other culture, there are many variations. You'll be right with her, waking at 5 am as many mosques call you to prayer, then sweating in rickshaws, hiking in tea plantations, closing your eyes at four-lanes of traffic on two-lane highways, choking on thick air pollution. Also attending an opulent, quarrelsome Muslim wedding and a simple friendly Christian wedding, getting your hands decorated with henna, delighted with surprise birthday cakes from students and friends, and weeping over street urchins and maimed beggars. You'll be amazed at how many people can be stuffed into such a small geographic area, probably the most crowded country in the world after Singapore. How does a Christian woman stay true to her faith in a country that forbids proselytizing? She tells of her own experiences with God. Planting seeds.

However, this was my first time to publish with Create Space. Comparing working with them as compared to other publishers I've published with (this was my 20th book) I found them easy to deal with, quick to answer their "help" line, and quickly producing a quality product. I'm disappointed that they no longer have an option to place it on e-readers other than their own, Kindle. I personally own a Nook. I am pleased to get the story out to the world, however. It tells of my experiences during almost five years in the Muslim country of Bangladesh. I had already lived in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, so it was interesting for me to compare how Muslim cultural practices vary in different places. MINGLING WITH MUSLIMS tells the good and the bad, the wonderful and the woeful events of a foreigner living in a Muslim culture. I found that some Muslims are extremists, some are peaceful, and some just follow whatever their friends say, not really knowing what is in their holy book. That's probably true of most religions in other countries! Friends are telling me it's a great read!

By Amazoncustomer I very much enjoyed this story about Elaine Master's travels and travails in Bangladesh. After the tragedy of 9/11, Elaine hears a calling to go live amongst Muslims and show them that Westerners are not the enemy. She uses gentle methods, such as teaching English using fun exercises that transform the stodgy approach to learning taken by other teachers in the past. Imagine her instructing a group of Bangladeshi men to sing "Old MacDonald Had A Farm". She asks herself "Would they feel demeaned?" In actuality, it turns out that, "They vied with each other to name new animals and figure out their sounds." Her offbeat methods endear her students to her, and we watch as the perspectives of those around her begin to shift. While I say Elaine's methods are gentle, there is still a stubborn streak running through her that makes the book fun to read. She tells of horrifying pollution, and power outages, and having to boil her water for 30 minutes to make it drinkable. She tells of riding through treacherous traffic in rickshaws that shake your teeth and bones, and of floods rising halfway up the wheels. She suffers bouts of serious food poisoning, both awful and dangerous. Her award-winning writing style comes out in some of her lovely descriptions: "Houses at the edge of the waterways stood on stilts, looking like big crouching spiders" and, "groups of women looked like flower gardens undulating in a breeze".I really like reading travel fiction, but sometimes it can get bogged down in minutia. Not so here. The story moved along at a good clip, keeping my interest the whole time. Perhaps because Elaine faced so many challenges that I kept wondering how she was going to make it through! This is a story of Christian faith, but also one that could appeal to a reader of any faith--or simply one interested in a good travel book. I got to learn all sorts of things about Bangladesh I never would have otherwise. I feel that I've entered the homes of many kind people, and have visited both big cities and the smallest of villages. I've learned about their culture, their food, and their traditions. I enjoyed every moment of it, and I was sad when I reached the end.Highly recommended.*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All views are my own.*

Travel to Bangladesh - Unusual and interesting experience By Rabid Reader After 9/11, the author decides to head to Bangladesh on a quest to learn more about Muslims and also to show Muslims what Americans really are like. Many people might come up with this worthy idea, but few would actually do it. But this is one determined lady and if anyone can do it, she can. She finds a country with many problems and a hard way of life that directly affects her health. She also finds that she loves the people there and her love is reciprocated. Descriptions of the country are interesting and eye-opening. The parts of the book that I enjoyed most were the author's warm relationships with the Muslim people. Although the author kept all missionary work low key, I imagine this book would be an excellent source of information for all missionaries and others traveling in Muslim countries.

It brought out a side of life that we often forget in our fast paced world, that of a hot summer day at the pond and a beloved grandparent or even parent by our side teaching us how to fish. I think that Greer did a wonderful job of narrating this story and it was fascinating and wonderful that it came to a happy ending. Teaches the hard part of us growing up and moving away from the way things were.

Diaries, Dragons, and Star-crossed Lovers By Rachel Steffan Let me say right off the bat that if you are after a light, straightforward story you can skim through using half your attention, Geoffrey's Queen is probably not for you. The novel is written wholly in the epistolary style, using the diary entries of the two main characters to tell a twisting tale of time travel and inter-dimensional intrigue that spans modern-day Chicago and Colorado, as well as the mysterious land of Kaveg, where two moons grace the night sky and the mountains are actually huge, sleeping dragons. There's a hint of The Time Traveler's Wife here in the star-crossed romance between the two leads, which makes it necessary to trust in the author's eventual ability to tie together the disparate threads into a cohesive tapestry by the end of the book. In this regard, Gwendolyn Druyor succeeds admirably, and the final quarter of the book is rich with "A-ha!" and "Oh, wow!" moments as the puzzle pieces begin to fall into place. The ending is satisfying but makes it very obvious that more is to come in the series... not a cliffhanger by any means, but rather open-ended.Well worth a read for lovers of fantasy, dragons, and strong female protagonists.

I decided to get the kindle version to go along with the audiobook. I was having a hard time keeping up with this twisted tale at first but once I gave my full attention to it, things started making a little bit more sense. Each chapter starts with diary entries from one of the two main characters Nanda and Geoffrey. Geoffrey shows up in modern day Chicago/Colorado with memories from his time spent with Nanda in Kaveg, but she does not know him. Nanda time travels to the kingdom called Kaveg where she finds Geoffery but he does not know her then! Although Nada has memories of their time in modern day America together. It is a well woven tale that needs our full attention. It was quite frustrating at times trying to understand what was going on and I'm not too happy with Mobious. He has some serious explaining to do.I love Annie! I wonder where I can get a dragon like her. She is so sweet :)I was not ready for the book to end when it did. I was actually quite shocked with how things ended up. I'm looking forward to the next book so everything can be straighten out.It is an amazing story with adventure, drama and romance.I received this book from the Author in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

You love, you are loved and this passion is worth a life to you. Either your life or anybody else's. It's not about aggression, it's about being evil for good's sake. Seems so. You wish good upon everybody. Yourself first, of course. At any cost. Live fast, die young. Stagnation USSR of the 80s, a crazy gang of friends burning though life. Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. Parties, psych ward, army service. Crazy patchwork of events, jokes, stories, anecdotes. And death, always walking nearby. Just reach out to it. This novel is a combination of cynical realism and weightless nostalgia. Memories of crazy years, few subplots - all with the irony of a bystander or the main character of the strangest evens. This is macho literature: adult language, erotic scenes, violence of everyday life... and subconscious desire of love. Reader's discretion is advised. Not for those of weak hearts or minds.

I loved how realistically, but at the same time charmingly the author discribed everyday life of young rebellious adults in a Soviet town during late 80-s. Read this book to remember how you were 19, reckless and in love, no matter where you grew up

    Captains Courageous, by Rudyard Kipling

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-When Rudyard Kipling took up residence in the U.S., he found intriguing characters in the sailing men of New England. This dramatization of his classic novel focuses on a good-humored, hard-working Gloucester fisherman who rescues a spoiled rich boy, Harvey Cheynen, when he falls off a passing steamship. Unconvinced by Harvey's story that his father is a millionaire, Captain Disko Troop and the crew of the We're Here teach the boy the value of a job well done. When the ship returns to port several months later, Harvey is reunited with his exultant parents and there are happy surprises for everyone. Toni Jourdan's adaptation uses key elements of the original text, and the story is presented with enough gusto to give young listeners a taste of Kipling's style. Though some accents lack authenticity and a few performances are uneven, the use of appropriate sound effects enhances this generally well done production by the St. Charles Players. Repeating the last line on the next side of the cassette interrupts the flow of the story but may help youngsters keep their place. The cover art has eye appeal, but the box is made of lightweight cardboard. Playing portions of this dramatization would make an excellent book talk; using it as a whole would give upper elementary and middle school students additional exposure to the works of Kipling.Barbara S. Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CT Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Throughout the world his voice commanded more respect than any citizen other than heads of state."The most complete man of genius I have ever known (Henry James)

From the Publisher The only one of Kipling's novels to be cast in an American setting, Captains Courageous endures as one of literature's most cherished and memorable sea adventures. Harvey Cheyne, spoiled millionaire's son, tumbles overboard from a luxury liner--only to be rescued by the crew of a Gloucester schooner. Thus begins the boy's second voyage into the rugged rites and ways of sailors. Like all Kipling's masterworks, Captains Courageous is an interweaving of art and moral purpose. Angus Wilson has said that it shows "delicacy of craft and violence of feeling, exactitude and wile impressionism, subtlety and true innocence." A popular favorite since its first publication in 1897, the novel remains a classic story of youthful initiation--and a lively tribute to the author's famous code of bravery, loyalty, an honor among men.

50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. grand tale of adventure and human nature By jeanne-scott Captains Courageous is a wonderful story of a pampered and indulged boy, the son of a millionaire, named Harvey Cheyne. He has no responsibilities and is given anything he wants. He lacks respect for anyone and that includes himself. He is washed overboard from a luxury liner while on a trip with his mother and is picked up by a fisherman. The fishing boat can not return him immediately because they have a crew that needs to earn a living. Harvey's family presumes that he is dead, drowned at sea. The story of Harvey's growing up involves responsibilty, hard work, trust and honor. Rudyard Kipling tells the story marvelously. The story is brilliantly crafted and a pure delight to read. The language of the story gives it the feel of the times and helps illustrate the rough lifestyles involved. This is a grand morality tale of adventure, human nature and the value of real love. I read this as a young teenager, but now (many years later!!) I see what an awesome author Kipling truly was!!!! This is a book to be read again!

The book "Captains Courageous", written by Rudyard Kipling is the struggle of a young, immature boy learning what it is to be a real man through different hardships and ordeals he encounters. The young boys name is Harvey Cheyne. The book is an adventure story take takes place on the ocean. The struggle that Harvey goes through could be argued that it is similar to Kipling's life in a way. Harvey is a fifteen-year-old boy whose parents are extremely rich. He has a very demanding and strong personality that shows up early in the novel. Harvey is thrown into a situation where he has to learn to become a man so he can survive. In the beginning Harvey falls of his ship into the ocean where he is then rescued by a small New England fishing boat. He demands that the captain returns him to his home with his parents and wealth, but the captain and crew do not listen. If they were to turn around they would lose several hundred dollars. Instead the captain makes a deal with Harvey. He tells him, that they will feed and clothe him if he helps on the ship. Harvey has no other choice so he accepts the deal. When he first begins work he is clumsy and slow at getting it done. He has never really had to do physical work before, so this is all new to him. Harvey works for months on the fishing vessel and some changes finally become apparent. His hands are rough and covered in work calluses, unlike the soft and smooth hands he use to have. He also begins to realize what it is like to be a real man. He has to work not only for himself, but for others as well. He also learns that everyone has to put their best effort into everything they do so everyone benefits. Later in the book Harvey witnesses a death of a Frenchman. While watching the funeral he realizes how important life and death really is. At the end of the story Harvey is returned to his family, but not as an immature boy, but as a strong and stable man with a new look at life. Throughout the novel Harvey goes through different hardships that shape him into a new person. Kipling also went through different events that changed him into a different person. At an early age Kipling was put into a foster home where another family then took him to the South Sea where he was beaten and bullied. He was left with psychological scars and a sense of betrayal. Kipling was taken away from his family where he had no control, just like Harvey when he fell into the ocean and then had to stay on the fishing boat for several months. Kipling was also bullied in a way just like Harvey was. Harvey had to do things he wasn't use to and it wasn't his choice. He had to do this to survive and Kipling had to do things to keep progressing through his life. Kipling was also reunited with his family after some his life changing events took place. Kipling also experienced a death like Harvey, but it was a bit different. Kipling had to experience dealing with the death of his son John. His son was killed in action during World War 1. This death was different then the one Harvey saw, but it still left a huge impact on his life. After facing his childhood events and going through a war and the death of his son, Kipling had many ideas he could use in his writings. The events might not have been good ones from his life, but they stuck with him for his whole life. Throughout the novel Kipling used many descriptive words to help give me the whole idea of what was going on. At times it was like I was there and was experiencing it in first person. Kipling did a good job at keeping me interested throughout the book. He didn't leave the story hanging, or have many slow and boring points in the book. There was always something to keep my interest. I also like how it was easy to understand and I didn't have to analyze everything to make sure I knew what was happening. I like how he seemed to base some of his ideas for this story on his own life. I think in doing this he gave the story extra thought into how it was wrote. I also think because he bases some of it on his own real life experiences he knew how to describe the events in the story better. The book, "Captains Courageous", is a well-written adventure story about boy and how he changes through part of his life. With well describe scenes and a good story line; Kipling keeps the reader interested through the whole book. If you are a person that likes a good adventure story or likes to read about opinions on how some people change throughout their lives then I recommend this book. I think that the story would have been a bit better if at the end the story had continued a bit into Harvey's life once he was back with his family with his new knowledge. Overall, I think that Kipling did a good job with the descriptions and whole idea of the story.

Arrogance Overboard By bo jones The main character of this book,15-year-old Harvey, is one year older than I am, so I am in a unique position to know that he was very fortunate to be taught the life lesson he learned. I know some people who would benefit from this lesson. This book tells of a story where arrogance must be tossed overboard to survive the challenges of life. Harvey learned about that the hard way. It paid off tremendously. He finally appreciated his parents instead of torturing them emotionally. He learned how to fish and to earn his keep. Harvey became a genuine person to his father, to his mother, to the crew on the We're Here, and to himself. Perhaps you should read Captains Courageous, too.

I enjoyed the first one so much, I was worried that the second wouldn't stand up. Silly me, Mr. Sutter has a talent that can't be denied, and I should have known there would be no worry about any other book to come. The Defenders is a fast-paced, and action-packed book that will have the reader riveted. I was enthralled by the archeological aspect as well as the paranormal. The wonderfully descriptive and knowledgeable story brings to life, and a vibrantly thrilling plot that had me wondering what possibly could happen next.Alec is a fabulous character that sticks with the reader long after the book is finished. He seems like he is your typical teenager, but he is anything but that. He has depth that will make it hard to remember he is so young, while at the same time he has that randomness that is exactly what a teenager is.The supporting characters add a fabulous dimension to the book, and I find them just as memorable. They are an eclectic group with individual characteristics that make each of them unique while tying in together well.Mr. Sutter is on my "must read" list, and I hope he keeps The Magic Shop series going. I look forward to anything he might come up with.Love it!

By Jennifer I travel a lot and even though I have learned a lot of tips and tricks over the years, I know that continuing to learn and improve it the best way to save money and have more fun while on the road. Right away I was introduced to some new last minute fare sites for flights that I hadn’t heard of before. I’m pretty excited to try these out since I need to get to Malaysia from the USA in a couple of months and that can be a pretty tricky route to figure out cheaply. The rest of the book offers great information for people who are looking to start backpacking. It can be very overwhelming to try to research and gather all the information you need, but this book does a great job of covering what type of backpack to buy, how to pack it, where to stay and how to stay on the road. Although I have to disagree with the author Howie Junkie when he tells girls that make-up is a waste of space and weight, the rest of the packing advice is solid. Good basic how-to backpack book.

Great resource for a traveler By Hanny Traveling is quite expensive, so it is quite refreshing to read a book that offers content that helps minimize the cost of travel. I am always traveling, so reading Howie Junkie’s book on how to backpack around the world is extremely helpful. Not only does he go through picking your backpack for your travels, but he also goes through cheap transportation and lodging options. Many of the lodging options he recommended I was aware about, but the options are some of the best lodging options out there. As a traveler, I also recommend using CouchSurfing and Hostels, which he explains more in depth. He also mentioned Travel Cards, which are very useful when traveling and will save you a lot of money. I really enjoyed this book because it goes through the important aspects of travel, which is great because not everyone knows how to travel hack and this can really save you money during your travels.
