By Ezekiel's Corner I'm not really sure what to say.The book is great, the only one I didn't like here is the 2nd book, I was not impressed with Nicks' story. Now with Arden, there is something in him, you would like him, despite of what he is.I don't even know what was special with Lia so I guess, it's fine. Now with Alina. I guess they are both a broken soul that's why they clicked together.I can't put it down.I love the story and was sad that the story is finished.

The only things that keep his nightmares away are sex & having a woman in bed with him. But when he left the military, he realized that he had no real skills that transitioned into everyday life as a citizen. That’s when he gets connected with the Moretti mafia family in Chicago and becomes the hitman/sniper for them. But his life is still in complete disarray.Evan makes progress, but also suffers major setbacks. There are people around who are a great help to him, and some who just use him which hinders his progress and hurts him in the long run. He has a difficult life, but there are some things/people who make it all better.I really didn’t want Shay Savage to end this series with the last book. Mainly, I’m greedy, love her writing and love how she writes from the male perspective, even if I want to smack the men at certain times and tell them to pull their head out. So even though the series is complete, it will go on in my mind!

By MissDenmark 4 stars! The complete box set of the Evan Arden series. The story was a series of perfectly executed loops and twirls that left me dizzy yet craving more.Evan Arden is a military vet suffering from PTSD. That in itself is a bad thing but coupled together with him being a hitman for the mob, and you have a recipe for disaster.Evans mental situation deteriorates throughout the story and Evan could have ended up becoming the villain but luckily, the author did an excellent job, building his character in a way that made me love him despite everything else. This is not a traditional love story. BUT don’t let that discourage you from reading it.It is an amazing tale of overcoming your inner demons.I would definitely recommend that you pick up a copy of this series TODAY!!

James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 – September 14, 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William on property he owned. Cooper was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and in his later years contributed generously to it. He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Society, but was expelled for misbehavior. Before embarking on his career as a writer he served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War and published in 1821. He also wrote numerous sea stories and his best known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians Cooper’s works on the early U.S. Navy have been well received, but they were sometimes criticized by his contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. America's first novel of American manners by an American author By T. Patrick Killough How do you review a long, 29-chapter book with nearly 70 named characters, a dozen or more of whom are reasonably central to the tale? And of those dozen "biggies", nine are carryovers from a previous novel. That is the nature of James Fenimore Cooper's 1838 HOME AS FOUND, the continuation and completion of the same year's HOMEWARD BOUND.HOMEWARD BOUND was a sea adventure tale, of the sort pioneered by Cooper in 1823 with THE PILOT, featuring John Paul Jones and the American Revolution in British waters. HOMEWARD BOUND also launched an entirely new genre of novel: the passenger vessel as microcosm of a society or societies. The societies in question were mid-1830s England and the USA, and their 27 named characters represented national strengths and weaknesses. For mysterious causes, the luxurious 700-ton American sailing packet Montauk was chased from London and Portsmouth by a British warship clear across the Atlantic. The Montauk was dismasted in a severe storm. It took refuge in protected coastl waters off North Africa where it was seized by Arabs and then recovered by its own crew and most of the men passengers. It then refitted its rigging from a cannibalized Danish freighter and limped safely into Manhattan harbor, lightened by deaths of several men through combat and after the removal of two passengers by the British corvette.HOME AS FOUND begins in Manhattan the day the Montauk arrives and its passengers disembark. Our focus throughout is on three members of the wealthy, refined Effingham family on their way home to their (fictional) ancestral New York village, Templeton (today's Cooperstown), after a dozen years in Europe and elsewhere. The UK edition of this novel was named EVE EFFINGHAM and that 20-year old heiress is even less central to the story named for her than Sir Walter Scott's Wilfred of Ivanhoe had been in IVANHOE. Eve was only eight when she sailed for Europe with her recently widowed father, Edward, and with her nanny. In France they acquired and still have in New York Mlle Viefville, Eve's governess, and a chambermaid, Annette. From time to time they were joined by Edward's first cousin (brother's sons they were, born on the same day) John ("Cousin Jack") Effingham.Aboard the Montauk Eve had fallen in love with a young man met years earlier in Vienna. He was taken off the Montauk by the British warship's captain. By novel's end, when they and another couple wed in a double ceremony in Templeton, we will have known this young hero under four names, Mr. Blunt, Paul Powis, Paul Assheton and, finally, after identity unraveling, Paul Effington, legitimate son of immensely wealthy Jack Effington. The plot is weak and through its false identities, Gothic. The Effington party spends the winter in Edward's town house in Manhattan. It then moves by steamboat up the Hudson, then by canal and carriages on to the "the Wigwam," the restored family mansion in Templeton on Lake Otsego.Cooper was quite clear that the point of HOME AS FOUND was not adventure but satire: poking fun at American pretensions in the 1830s. Americans are seen as greatly declined after even the mere dozen years the Effinghams had spent learning languages, hobnobbing with a Czar, an Emperor and the great ones of Europe. They had ranged from London to Paris to Rome to Jerusalem and then went back home to New York. And what did the proud Effinghams find at home? Americans are provincial. They do not think for themselves. They take their ideas primarily from England and secondarily from France. In religion they are demand-side levellers. The returned Effinghams meet and resist a strong popular movement to convert the venerable Episcopalian church in Templeton into an amphitheater with no pulpit, opened up pews and with all future emphasis on preaching rather than praying. Templeton has five churches and even more sects and most local Christians disapprove of Eve because she dances, plays cards and reads her prayers from a book.During their winter season in Manhattan, the Effinghams and Mlle Viefville had attended a series of entertainments. Only one evening passed Effingham muster: an hour with an old-line hostess open to quiet, un-pushy, educated, creative old-line friends. Other parties are built either around nouveaux social climbers or pseudo-intellectuals and artists."Hajjis" are in great demand. By this term is meant returned Americans who have spent at least a week or two "doing" Paris. It is the custom in Manhattan "society" for women to move about a hall on the arm of a man. Eve and Mlle Viefville follow French fashion and move around unescorted. Horrors! Most of these people are scorned by the proud Effinghams and are disliked in turn. Are these Effinghams clones of Jane Austen's haughty Mr. Darcy? In HOME AS FOUND we deepen our acquaintance with off-putting American Steadfast Dodge, introduced to us on the decks of the Montauk in October 1835 (or thereabouts) in Portsmouth. He is a newspaper publisher returning from a couple of months in Europe whence he filed reports on the "true" state of affairs for a coterie of ignorant American readers. in HOMEWARD BOUND he ran from combat with the Arabs, but now unabashedly presents himself to readers as a hero.We also renew acquaintance with grizzled 60-year old Captain John Truck of the Montauk, invited to Templeton after another voyage to and from London. He becomes chums with a local fisherman dubbed "the Commodore." They spend many happy hours together on the lake, philosophize about the merits of salt water sailing v. fresh water sailing, drink together and admire the Effinghams together. Captain Truck had been lionized in Manhattan parties, where he was once mistaken for an Episcopalian clergyman. But the better people of Manhattan society recognize the Captain as a diamond in the rough. He even falls in love with a 70-year old American lady of true high society. And so it goes.America, argues Cooper, began extraordinarily well with Washington, Franklin and the Founders. But just look at it now! Men live to get rich quick, especially through creating speculative bubbles in western lands and the expanding frontier. Americans are provincial, levellers, jealous of their betters (better by virtue of inherited estates, education and demonstrated merit). Templeton is unrecognizable after a twelve year absence abroad. "Birds of passage" make up half New York's population. They come to an older settlement, pause a year or two for a breather before moving on westward, and try to change the good old settled ways of yore. Cynical Cousin Jack Effingham argues that 18 months in America is the equivalent of a generation in Europe. Things change very fast in Templeton, as elsewhere in the USA, and usually for the worse.HOME AS FOUND has been called America's first novel of American manners written by an American. Cooper held up a mirror to show his provincial countrymen how they might look to a family returning after a dozen educational years abroad. It was not a pretty picture.HOME AS FOUND has considerable humor. I found myself chuckling aloud a couple of dozen times. But its humor is sarcastic, obvious humor. James Fenimore Cooper attempted something important. His brain teemed with insights. But he often failed to find the right words or a light touch to make his point. He argued that it was almost impossible to write a novel of manners about America. For America had little history no hereditary social classes. And yet ..... HOME AS FOUND grows on you. I was confused, lost in detail and bored after a first reading. I greatly enjoyed the second. I now rate this book Three and a Half Stars, rounding upward to Four Stars: * * * *.-OOO-

1 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Mediocore Social Criticism By bit_kilnit If you are searching for a distinctly British aristocratic view on life, read this book. if you are an American, as this author is, flee from the terrible grip of "Home as Found" as the book slowly entraps one into delving further into the pages, when suddenly one finds the very culture that he/she has come to love has many loopholes of stupidity. If you wish to remain in ignorance of the benefits of aristocratic society, and the down points of American democracy, do not read this book. I give this work a 3 as it contains no real content for a storyline, but holds to the teaching principle of repetition to pass a point across.

Great idea for keeping track of your faovrite microbrews By Cori Macnaughton My husband and I are both craft beer afficionadoes, and having kept an informal account of many of the brews we've tried over the years, I loved the idea of a journal to keep all the information in one place. The author has done a great job of combining useful information, ideas for what information to include, and enough room for ample note-taking, making this a worthy addition to the library of anyone serious about scouting out and keeping track of the best possible brews. This would also make a great gift for the beer snob in your life. ;-)

She helps at the family inn and enjoys working there. Her father wants her to marry and he's already chosen someone suitable. His name is Taran and his parents own a nearby hotel. There isn't much choice when it comes to potential husbands, but Catrin is convinced she will meet her true love and she isn't sure if Taran is that person.Judith is determined to bring the first picture of the Snowdon Lily to London and she's staying at the inn together with her brother Phillip who is a photographer. Catrin and her father will take them to the mountains to show them the precious flower, but will they be on time? The competition is fierce...Finding the Snowdon Lily is a heartwarming story about the Snowdon mountains. I love the setting and Heather Pardoe's descriptions of the mountains themselves, nature and the weather. I could picture everything that happened in the story very well. I greatly admire the vivid way she writes. It makes the whole story come to life. I wanted to visit the inn and climb the mountains. The setting is both volatile and romantic and it's absolutely perfect for the story.I love how Heather Pardoe describes the past. It was fun to read what kind of photography equipment people needed in the earlier days. I also liked that Judith is so strong and that she stands up for what she believes. Catrin is brave and kind, a great combination. Phillips has such a good heart. Everything in this story is exactly right. I highly recommend this fantastic novella.

The beautiful, atmospheric descriptions transported me to the Snowdon area of Wales with its perilously changeable weather, and I was on the edge of my seat, wanting to know if the characters would manage to overcome all the obstacles set in their path. I especially liked the main character, Catrin, an endearing and feisty young heroine battling against the social pressures of her time, determined to make her own choices in life. This is a tender, exciting story, beautifully written, with a cast of engaging characters. Lovely!

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a novel by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Set some six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Through the Looking-Glass includes such celebrated verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Amazon.com Review "And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

Taking to heart his charming, insatiably curious heroine's words, Lewis Carroll worked many long hours (days, months...) with illustrator Sir John Tenniel to create the most perfect pictures imaginable for what were to become instant classics: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When thinking about Alice and her dreamy surrealistic adventures down the rabbit hole and behind the looking-glass, who can help picturing the golden-haired girl in her lilac dress and striped stockings, gazing up at the Cheshire Cat or arguing with Tweedledum and Tweedledee? Tenniel's drawings remained black and white for over 40 years until 1911, when eight prints in each book were hand colored. Now, for the first time, every remaining illustration has been colored, making these the first editions to feature all of the original art in full color. Traditionalists need not worry: colorist Diz Wallis colored proofs taken from Tenniel's carefully preserved woodblocks, remaining faithful to his original drawings. The beautiful tones of these new hardcover editions look as natural as can be; they could just as easily be from the 19th century. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly wonderland revisited Spanish illustrator Angel Dominguez fills an unabridged edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with 75 watercolors, most of them closely packed with lush oversized flowers, strange creatures and winding vines reminiscent of Art Nouveau-often against bizarrely serene pastoral backgrounds. Exotic birds and animals, such as peacocks and zebras, wander through the picture frame. While the illustrations bring out the text's absurdity, pretty-in-pink Alice provides a counterpoint not of normalcy but of sentimentality.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up-- Edens has compiled and arranged illustrations from 25 editions of Alice in Wonderland published in the early to mid-1900s. The result is a fascinating look at a variety of illustrative styles. This is far less jarring than one might expect because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, has so strongly influenced his successors that their interpretations are often similar in design. In fact, the fascination in these pictures is the differing details--Alice's dress, her hairstyle, and her expressions tell much about the time period and the artist's viewpoint. Edens has also done a fine job of integrating the pictures with the text. He varies interest by utilizing full-page plates, half plates, vignettes, and even reducing some illustrations to fit the design so the book flows fairly well and these myriad illustrations blend into a whole rather than distract the eye. The reproduction is excellent. A must for collections with historical interest in children's literature and large libraries. --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public LibraryCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

By Monika My first exposure to Lewis Carroll's classic children's story was through the 1951 Disney film adaptation "Alice in Wonderland," which I watched repeatedly as a child. The creative quality of the story never failed to fascinate me, and I kept going back despite my deep-rooted terror of the frightful Queen of Hearts, who always gave me nightmares! However, it was not until recently, as an adult, that I ever picked up the book/s upon which that film was based. In some ways I wish I had read it when I was younger, as the book certainly makes a great deal more sense than the movie does (as much sense as a story of this sort can, anyhow), but thankfully this book is unique in that it is just as enjoyable for adults as for children. The story is actually spread across two books, here contained in a single volume. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was first published in 1865 and relates the events that take place after young Alice falls asleep during her lessons and dreams of following a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. Alice encounters all manner of strange creatures in her dream, and finds herself in all sorts of curious predicaments where common sense fails and the nonsensical comes to be expected. There is no central, concrete storyline, but rather Alice moves rapidly from one bizarre situation to the next before waking once more and relating the whole adventure to her sister. The second of the two books, "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There," appeared in 1871 and is very similar in nature to the first, though having a slightly different plot. Here Alice steps through an ordinary looking-glass one day, only to find herself in a world where, if you wish to get anywhere, you must walk in the opposite direction! Walking toward your desired destination only gets you further and further away. Also, interestingly, the land which Alice has entered is essentially a giant chessboard, and she must move through the different squares to reach the other side if she wishes to become a queen (which she does). The characters Carroll created in these two stories are some of the most strikingly unique and unforgettable in the world of literature. Alice herself, based largely on Alice Liddell, a real-life child of whom Carroll was very fond, is a wonderful heroine that you can't help admiring. Throughout all of her backwards and upside-down adventures, she remains ever sensible and analytical, always trying to reason her way out of the most unreasonable situations. Other characters a reader won't soon forget include the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat, Bill the Lizard, the Caterpillar, the Duchess and her peppery cook, the aforementioned Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Red and White Queens, the talking flowers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Sheep, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red and White Knights. Carroll also created many fascinating new creatures in his stories, including bread-and-butterflies, rocking-horseflies, "slithy toves," "mome raths" and more. What I find most intriguing, as an adult reader of these books, is Carroll's brilliant use of wordplay and symbolism throughout the stories. Nearly everything has some sort of double meaning. There are hidden messags and subtle witticisms on every page. Carroll also includes several parodies of what were well-known songs and rhymes in England at the time. Young children will love the books for their fantastic qualities and imaginative inspiration, but most readers will not pick up on the many puns and jokes until they are a little older, so these stories really do have something to offer to anyone, no matter what age. I'd highly recommend the book to any reader - and be sure to get an edition that includes the original illustrations. This review refers to the 2004 Barnes & Noble Classics printing, with introduction and notes by Tan Lin.

Kauffmann There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view. This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.

Whispers of Honduras: A Peace Corps Experience is a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) account of living in Olancho, Honduras from September 1997-December 1999. Manto was a quiet, little mountain town surrounded by pine-forested hills then. As a PCV, I was treated well, laughed a lot, learned to slow down, and developed a deeper understanding of international relations, environmental protection, poverty, and friendship, among countless other words that could be listed here. The pages of the book depict small parts of me that serve as experiences not only of my life in Olancho, but also other areas of Honduras during my time as a PCV. The sections before “Return to Hondo” were written while as a PCV and the chapters after it were written during a return trip in December 2007/January 2008. With that, I give you words and photos that may illuminate my understanding of Honduras.

People were moving west and the wild times of robbers and thieves taking advantage of the less fortunate, farmers trying to eke By Royal Wilkinson Having shared many of the same experiences as Jim, I can attest that he give a very realistic idea of life in rural Honduras. His way of writing brings out the innocence of a country struggling to become self-sustaining while in the grips of mass corruption and poverty. There is a lawlessness in the land of Olancho that reminds me of a time in our country's history. People were moving west and the wild times of robbers and thieves taking advantage of the less fortunate, farmers trying to eke out a life when nature isn't always favorable, and no laws or people available to enforce the law. Honduras is a beautiful country and the people we got to know during our two years of Peace Corps service are beautiful as well. Whispers of Honduras: A Peace Corps Perspective is a display of how humanity has touched others and how those others have touched humanity.

Honduras: The "Real Deal" By Amazon Customer I've been to Honduras and the places that Murren writes about are places that most people who go to Honduras will never experience. This is not your Costa Rica travel guide for tourists from the States going down for a week to 'experience Central America'. It's a real account of someone who spent a couple of years living and working with the campesinos in one of the most tragically beautiful and poor countries in our hemisphere. I highly recommend this for any prospective Peace Corps Volunteer or anyone else who is curious about life outside of the United States.

In a classroom setting, this book would be an excellent supplement to any social science curriculum especially when opening students eyes to opportunities for service that are open to them around the world. I would recommend this book for middle school and high school teachers looking for engaging, real world content.

WELL, it was the next spring after me and Tom Sawyer set our old nigger Jim free, the time he was chained up for a runaway slave down there on Tom's uncle Silas's farm in Arkansaw. The frost was working out of the ground, and out of the air, too, and it was getting closer and closer onto barefoot time every day; and next it would be marble time, and next mumbletypeg, and next tops and hoops, and next kites, and then right away it would be summer and going in a-swimming

TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE (annotated), by Mark Twain

Review Filled with the folk humor and storytelling charm that have made Tom and Huck so popular for so many decades. -- Audiobook News Service, Spring-Summer 2005

From the Publisher Hesperus Press, as suggested by their Latin motto, Et remotissima prope, is dedicated to bringing near what is far—far both in space and time. Works by illustrious authors, often unjustly neglected or simply little known in the English–speaking world, are made accessible through a completely fresh editorial approach and new translations.

Through these classic works, which feature forewords by leading contemporary authors, the modern reader will be introduced to the greatest writers of Europe and America. An elegantly designed series of genuine rediscoveries.

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Minor Twain but Quite Good By Bill R. Moore Mark Twain's 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its 1884 follow-up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are two of American literature's most famous works and the latter one of its most acclaimed. It may thus seem strange that this 1896 sequel - like Tom Sawyer Abroad, its 1894 predecessor - is now almost obscure. The truth is that this is not entirely undeserved. Huck Finn is a masterpiece of world literature, and anyone expecting this to be anywhere near its level will be sorely disappointed. It lacks the more famous work's seriousness and ambitiousness, making it inevitably minor. However, it is quite interesting on its own minor terms; this means it is not great literature or even pretending to be. However, like nearly everything else Twain wrote, it is eminently readable, very entertaining, and sometimes funny. Fans of Twain's lighter work will love it, and there is something for all to appreciate it. The book is notable for taking the series and its characters in surprising new directions, bringing in some rather dark events and making Tom an unlikely detective hero. Though not a great literary work in other respects, it performs surprisingly well in the latter area. Those eager for more adventures from Tom, Huck, and Jim will certainly warm to it. Like the book that bears his name, this is narrated by Huck with all his delightfully provincial grammar and spelling; "prostitution" for "prosecution" in the court scene is my laugh aloud favorite. His naïveté and ignorance also come into play in skillfully unprecedented ways.Like most of Twain, this book can be read and enjoyed on several levels. Most simply and obviously, it is a rollicking, picaresque adventure of the sort later classed as Young Adult or Juvenile. It is notably entertaining and quite humorous even in this limited sense. While far from politically correct by current standards, it can easily be enjoyed by the very young as well as those of all ages who will take it on its own terms. In this sense it is very much like Tom Sawyer Abroad and, indeed, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, not least in returning to the latter's rural South. It also differs significantly from Tom Sawyer Abroad in obvious ways. First and most clearly, as the title shows, it is a detective story of the kind then wildly popular; this was after all when Sherlock Holmes was a sensation. Those who, like me, love such stories can appreciate it simply on this level. It is set up like a typical one with a murder mystery and has exciting elements such as a false confession, a dramatic courtroom scene, a climactic discovery, etc. - and, of course, eventual justice. Seeing all this play out is exciting, and Twain milks it for all it is worth. Unlike most of his works, this is filled with literary devices conventionally used for entertainment value, especially in modern popular fiction: foreshadowing, suspense, dramatic irony, etc. The revelation and ending are in particular highly wrought. Anyone who likes blazing stories of this sort, particularly detective ones, will enjoy and appreciate this and find the book well worth reading for it alone. The discerning can see more, even if no one can see greatness. Though less savagely biting than later work, this is vintage Twain satire in many ways. Detective fiction itself is the target, but Twain's burlesque is gentle; we feel he lightly pokes fun at something he himself enjoys - not least because his satire could be far more bitter. He has some fun at the expense of the genre's conventions, using them in slightly exaggerated fashion to show how superficial they can sometimes be. What may seem exaggeration if read straight comes into play here: melodrama, implausibility, clichés, etc. This is where Huck's naïveté and ignorance are important. Many, perhaps even most, readers will be able to deduce some - or even all - of the ostensibly revelatory events, turning what would normally be suspense into dramatic irony. Those who miss the satire may think of these as defects, but those who see what Twain is doing will know they are intentional knocks at a) provincial Southern ignorance, and b) detective fiction conventions. Even simply moving from popular detective settings - i.e., Victorian England - to Twain's rural South makes the genre seem slightly ridiculous. However, that the book itself it can still be enjoyable with shows that the genre can as well. Indeed, Twain's satire is so subtle that many, perhaps especially detective fiction fans, will not even notice it - with whatever ambiguous result. As for those who dislike the genre, they may well like the book significantly more - indeed, may think it a riot. Twain at any rate did not cut off his satirical take on the genre here, returning several years later with the novella "A Double-Barreled Detective Story," which drops Tom and Huck but actually has Holmes(!) and is significantly more biting.Tom Sawyer, Detective is thus quite a strange book - a light-hearted satire that most will not get and that many will likely enjoy for the very reasons Twain tries to mock. Its canonical status depends on how well one thinks he succeeds here. No one could put it with his great work. It is quite short - about one hundred pages - and can be read quickly and easily. That said, it will certainly delight fans of the associated stories and characters. The story itself is better than Tom Sawyer Abroad, arguably even better than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; it has more plot than either, and characterization is strong. Conversely, there is significantly less humor, especially in the dialogue, except for those unusually alive to the satire. All told, it is a worthy edition to the series and to Twain generally even if only hard-core fans, especially those who treasure the associated works, should read it in the end. He hardly wrote anything not worth reading, but this should be one of the last stops. It is a pleasant read even if the fact that it has survived more than a century has more to do with Twain's name and his better works than inherent quality. This is surprisingly enjoyable proof that he was ever-readable even when far from this best.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. we enjoyed it By Wayne S. Walker Most people are familiar with Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but did you know that there were a couple of other sequels? One was Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and the other is this short novel in which Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder, as narrated by Huck Finn. It is a satire of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Tom's Uncle Silas, a preacher in Arkansas, is doing poorly because a rich neighbor, Brace Dunlap, wants to marry Tom's cousin Benny, and she said no, so Brace is trying to stir up trouble for Silas, who hires Brace's no account brother Jubiter to work for him in an attempt to smooth things out, although Silas and Jubiter are constantly arguing. Aunt Polly sends Tom and Huck on a steamboat down the Mississippi to help cheer Silas and his family up. On the boat, they meet Jake Dunlap, Jubiter's long lost twin brother who had become a criminal and was assumed to have been killed many years before. He and two other men have robbed a diamond store in St. Louis, and he has sneaked off with the diamonds, but the other two men followed him on to the boat, so he is now trying to escape them. His plan is to go home to his brothers and pretend to be a deaf-mute. On the day Tom and Huck arrive, Jubiter Dunlap disappears. He later turns up dead, Uncle Silas is accused of killing him, and there is a trial. Will Tom be able to save his uncle from hanging? We did this as a family read aloud, and everyone enjoyed it. In the "Dover Evergreen Classics" edition, the word "nig*er" is replaced by "Negro." I had to do a little further editing because of some common euphemisms and a few instances of taking the Lord's name in vain. There are also several references to tobacco and smoking. Otherwise, this is a fun book. In 1938, the story was made into a movie directed by Louis King, with Billy Cook as Tom and Donald O'Connor as Huckleberry Finn.

Twain's descriptions through the eyes of Huck Finn are rich and believable. The adventure takes twists and is fun to read. I especially enjoyed the boys' perspective and the influence of the supernatural and the macabre on the mystery--as only boys with keen imaginations can bring to an adventure. Also, the story's basis on a true event made it the more entertaining. Just as satisfying as Tom Sawyer or the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this is a short and pleasant read.

Review 'The first edition of a new guidebook to this fascinating, if lately overlooked, part of West Africa.' National Geographic Traveller

About the Author Sean Connolly has been an English teacher in Somaliland, a student in Ghana, a writer in Mozambique, and a backpacker across much of the African continent. When he's not discussing verb tenses, diplomatic recognition, or the merits of camel meat, you may find him riding in the back of a grain truck, sampling questionable local delicacies, or seeking out a country's funkiest records―a distinct pleasure in as music-mad of a country as Senegal. Raised in Chicago and educated in New York, Sean is a full-time culture fiend (read: anthropology graduate) and stays on the move whenever possible.

Yes. One would. But they might be just the teensiest bit mistaken. The more we learn and experience, the more we realize there's a a lot more to learn and experience!Flipping through the newly published Bradt Travel Guide for Senegal, we both came to the same conclusion: we gotta do more of this stuff. And armed with this comprehensive and handy little guide, we just might.5 things I learned, thanks to this guidebook:- how to cross the borders into our five neighboring countries and what to expect at each one- things to be aware of when traveling during Ramadan (brilliant topic!)- the scoop on the most popular dailies and weeklies in Senegal, as well as glossy fashion mags to look for- how to travel in a way that stimulates and develops local economy and also a great list of charities open to short-term international volunteers
