The Royal Enforcers protect the land of Saxony from pirates, vampires and the like. Their strict code of loyalty to the Crown includes executing any Night Children found within the empire. Lord Jarvis, a Royal Enforcer driven by justice, is grateful to the Crown and the Church for saving his life as a child. However, his years of service to both have left him with more blood on his hands than peace in his mind. Telos, a young feline shape shifter, is tossed on a Saxony beach by a warlock. As he hides in the cobblestone streets of the capital, he fears for his life, being what he is – a Night Child, a creature not entirely human. Discovered by Lord Jarvis, Telos is given a choice – a death to end his miserable existence or begging for mercy from a man known as a mass executioner. Faced with both Telos’s innocence of spirit and the Queen’s brutal command, Lord Jarvis must fight with more than his sword to maintain a remnant of his soul.

By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed the Amulet of Aesterus, I thought the writing was better as you progressed through the book, I enjoyed the way the fight scenes were written and as the book went on it left you wanting to know more so it was a bit hard to put down. I thought the characters were interesting too and it was not bogged down with too many new words and characters, which sometimes make books hard to read as there is too much to remember. I am looking forward to the next book.

PDF Ebook Online One way ticket to Brittany, france: Everything you didn't know you needed to know about moving to Brittany, by Jenny Lovett

Are you thinking about moving to Brittany, France? Or have you already moved? If so you are probably in the same situation we were a few years ago. Swamped by conflicting advice, living on the internet trying to find the information you need, getting more and more frustrated by the day. Sound familiar? This book was developed with hindsight. It is what we would have liked to have known in the beginning, what would’ve made our life easier, such as the fact that shops don’t open on a Sunday in rural Brittany, not good if you arrive on a Saturday night. The fact that planning permission is required to replace rotten windows (and can take 2 months over winter!) and if you are invited to French friends, taking wine is not always a good choice. This is not an in depth guide to France and does not cover the political situation, the weather or customs but an easy to read guide on the essentials.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A real gem of a book! By Susan Keefe Nothing beats experience, and Jenny Lovett, the author of this book has just that. It is a goldmine of information covering practically everything you need to know about moving and settling down in Brittany. It is quite common for house purchases in other countries to be carried out without proper research. Here in France, it is very easy for the heart to overtake the head when the opportunity to purchase a beautiful property at a cheap price becomes possible. Yet purchasing the right property is an art in itself, very often not enough thought is given as to what is really wanted, or how practical the property will be a few years down the line. However with this book as your guide you should be well prepared for all the little things which make moving to France so unique.Personally I love the way that the author has added all those little bits of information which no-one thinks to tell you, like nowhere is open on Sunday, so if you arrive late Saturday night you better have some food with you, for a start, and many more priceless little bits you need to know. The book, as the title says, is based on buying a property in Brittany, because this is where the author’s experience lies, however, I have to say, living in another part of France, that the information it contains would be useful to anyone considering moving over here.

  • Riders of the Purple Sage is a Western novel by Zane Grey, first published by Harper & Brothers in 1912. Considered by many critics[who?] to have played a significant role in shaping the formula of the popular Western genre, the novel has been called "the most popular western novel of all time." Riders of the Purple Sage tells the story of Jane Withersteen and her battle to overcome persecution by members of her polygamous Mormon fundamentalist church. A leader of the church, Elder Tull, wants to marry her. Withersteen gets help from a number of friends, including Bern Venters and Lassiter, a famous gunman and killer of Mormons. Throughout most of the novel she struggles with her "blindness" to the evil nature of her church and its leaders, and tries to keep Venters and Lassiter from killing the adversaries who are slowly ruining her. When she adopts a child, Fay, she abandons her beliefs and discovers her true love. A second plot strand tells of Venters and his escape to the wilderness with a girl named Bess, "the rustler's girl," whom he has accidentally shot. Venters falls in love with the girl while caring for her. Together they escape to the East, while Lassiter, Fay, and Jane, pursued by both Mormons and rustlers, escape into a paradise-like valley and topple a giant rock to forever close off the only way in or out.

Review ''Zane Grey epitomized the mythical West that should have been. . . The standout among them is Riders of the Purple Sage.'' --True West''Poignant in its emotional qualities.'' --New York Times''A powerful work, exceedingly well written.'' --Brooklyn Eagle

From the Publisher 7 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Inside Flap Told by a master storyteller who, according to critic Russell Nye, "combined adventure, action, violence, crisis, conflict, sentimentalism, and sex in an extremely shrewd mixture," "Riders of the Purple Sage is a classic of the Western genre. It is the story of Lassiter, a gunslinging avenger in black, who shows up in a remote Utah town just in time to save the young and beautiful rancher Jane Withersteen from having to marry a Mormon elder against her will. Lassiter is on his own quest, one that ends when he discovers a secret grave on Jane's grounds. "[Zane Grey's] popularity was neither accidental nor undeserved," wrote Nye. "Few popular novelists have possessed such a grasp of what the public wanted and few have developed Grey's skill at supplying it."

136 of 152 people found the following review helpful. More purple than sage, but worth reading By Peter Reeve If you are not an aficionado of the Western novel but would like to sample the genre, then you should try one or more of the three great classics; Jack Schaefer's "Shane", Owen Wister's "The Virginian" , and this novel by Zane Grey. Of the three, "Shane" has the most literary merit and is the only one with claims to being great literature. "The Virginian" is often regarded as the first true representative of the genre, establishing as it does many of the great archetypal characters and incidents of Western myth, and "Riders of the Purple Sage" remains the best-selling Western."Riders" has two very remarkable features. The first is the surprising complexity and mythic depth of the story. There is for example, a Garden of Eden theme, with two of the characters isolated for an extended time in a lush wilderness. This is so strikingly like the Emil Zola novel "La Faute de l'Abbe Mouret" (The Abbe Mouret's Sin) that one wonders if Grey had read and been inspired by that work. Interwoven with this is an Oedipal theme. If all of this sounds a bit much for a cowboy yarn, I can only say that it really is all there. The other remarkable thing about the book is its attitude toward the Mormon religion. The hero is an avowed "killer of Mormons". The LDS church is depicted as essentially brutal and tyrannical. This, I suppose, reflects a prejudice of the time, but I wonder how present-day members of that church regard this novel. It has to be said that Grey is not a great writer and in particular, he cannot do dialogue. In fact, the dialogue in the first few pages is so appalling that I nearly gave up on the book there and then. However, I'm glad I stuck with it. It is such a fine and strange story and has such a wonderful sense of place.

52 of 58 people found the following review helpful. one of the truly great Westerns By Orrin C. Judd Her father's death has left Jane Withersteen in possession of the richest land holding in the Cottonwoods, a Mormon village on the 1871 Utah frontier. Most importantly, Amber Spring runs through her property and so she controls the water supply that makes possible the rolling fields of purple sage. But now the Mormon church wants to gain contol of the spring by forcing an unwilling Jane to marry Elder Tull. They've been steadily increasing the pressure on her and as the novel opens, Tull and his henchmen have come to arrest Venters, the Gentile foreman on her ranch. Outnumbered and outgunned, Jane prays for deliverance. Just as Tull is about to whip Venters, a rider in black appears--Lassiter, the scourge of the Mormons.Lassiter is an archetype of the mythic Western hero. In him we see the origins of both Shane and Ethan Edwards (from The Searchers, Amos in the novel)--a lone gunmen fighting for Justice, he has descended upon Mormon Utah with a vengeance, obsessively searching for the sister who was kidnapped by a Mormon proselytizer.Jane takes him on as a ranch hand, but makes him swear to forsake violence. Inevitably (as in High Noon), events force her to release him from his oath.Despite an extremely harsh view of Mormons, this is one of the truly great Westerns; a must read.GRADE: A

51 of 59 people found the following review helpful. Classic western story By magellan This is the only western I've ever read; I'm mostly into classical literature, science writing, and non-fiction, but I asked friends for a book rec in the field, and they said read this one and the two Thomas Berger novels about Little Big Man.The novel is interesting in that it's not a stereotypical western story. The main character is a woman who owns a large cattle ranch and is basically the mainstay of the little town of Cottonwoods, a Mormon town on the Utah border, sort of like the Cartwright family was in the popular TV western series, only in this case, Lorne Green is replaced by a female lead. The novel also is unusual in that it shows her struggling against the tyranny and even criminality of her fellow Mormon ranchers, who don't like the fact of a beautiful, wealthy, but unattached woman, who wields considerable influence in the local town despite their best attempts to undermine her.One the things that sparked my interest in the novel was hearing an English prof in a radio interview on National Public Radio talk about some of the scholarship that is being devoted to genres like the western novel. She was working herself on the books of Karl May (The Legend of the Llano Estacado), Owen Wister (The Virgianian), and Zane Grey. One of the interesting things she had to say had to do with Grey's vivid prose descriptions of the western landscape. She said Grey's prose sensualized the landscape, giving it an almost masculine sensuality and almost sexuality. I'm about halfway into the book, and I can say that the rugged countryside of sheer, rock-walled canyons, arid plateaus and valleys, and wide-open spaces of this part of Utah are vividly described by Grey and serve, not just as a dramatic backdrop against which the novel's events take place, but as a palpable force for good or evil by itself.Contrary to some other reviews I've read that said the plot wandered a bit, I'm not really noticing that. I think the book has a strong plot with a lot of powerful elements going for it: interesting characters (including a dangerous and mysterious but chivalrous gunslinger), a sympathetic main character who struggles and triumphs against society's evils (not just a few western-style bad guys), beautiful and evocative descriptions of the landscape, and, as the backcover says it, "hairsbreadth escapes."One last interesting thing is that, if I remember correctly, Zane Grey was actually a Pennsylvania dentist who failed in his attempt to set up a profitable dental practice in New York. He wanted to get into writing westerns, and when his first novel was a big success, his writing career was launched and he never looked back. Riders of the Purple Sage is probably his most famous book, and despite it's not being a typical western novel, it has become a classic in its field.

"A Lovely Short Story With Excellent Narration" By Teresa "LeTour de Paris" was a neat short about Tavara Tinker who's an interesting and intriguing character. I liked this story and hope there's more to come in the chronicles. I'd really enjoy seeing where this character goes and what she does next. I also loved the subtle sound effects in the story. What I especially liked was the narration. Melanie Fraser is terrific. She has a super voice and a brilliant knack for capturing the characters persona. She also has a great accent with exquisite French."This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast."

This book is about Grace, an amazing young sensuous woman who learns how to survive this ordeal by adapting and improvising her skills to stay alive. Amazing Grace has nothing to do with religion but there are excerpt that the survivors rely on to gather their strength or faith. The Final Story of the El Nino prediction that has been linked with the arrival of the apocalyptic advent of the undead and zombies in our world. Whether you believe it or not, the havoc or chaos either one of these perfect storms brings to our society is worth reading about as the book is full with information on surviving the weather related disasters and the zombie attacks when such conflicts appear. There are no permanent solutions offered. Some is speculation, others are part of history. Much of the courageous and innovative wisdom comes from life’s experiences and those things these survivors have done in the past. Weather forecasters have predicted a severe and damp El Nino weather conditions, the extreme change in climate and the environmental impacted of the numerous flashfloods helped spread the fear and number of zombies and their lethal virus biting behaviors. We already know that in every disaster, calamity or disorder, zombies seem to appear as much as the plague does and options were given on how to defeat or defend yourself against these flesh eating undead creatures. Zombies, whether they are crawlers, creepers, walkers or mutants, thrive off adverse environmental conditions and attack the non-infected with bites that in turn infects them and multiplies their existence. Remember that victims are often created through circumstances. This storm is a serious disaster maker, which, by the implementation of martial law, causes massive evacuations and produces grave consequences related to flashfloods, mudslides etc. This novel is about numerous violent encounter with zombies under the perfect storms created by the El Nino weather phenomena predicted by forecasters to be the worst since 1998. All the prior written and released book volumes deal with individual cases that accumulatively leads up to the final story. Broken down into volumes so that the reader can break this phenomena up into chapters or series for their own pleasure. Those who believe climate change is real or pending, will be disappointed in the reality of the El Nino. Those who believe in zombies will be appreciative of the tips or hints given to survive such calamity. When all is said, this is a general fiction book with action and drama and sexually explicit scenes. This book is different as it deals with human emotions, sexual desires, violent encounters and all those chaotic events under pressure that deals with the stress, anxiety and other problems related to being attacked by a horde of walkers or water bloated zombies in Southern California during the El Nino produced flashfloods; now lasting longer than the landscape can handle and how stress, loneliness, sexual tension between the survivors impacts their behaviors while trying to find a cure or solution to the challenges at hand. In the end the book comes together as a common problem solver that gives tactics on how to cope with this disaster that destroyed and disrupted the lives of those affected by Mother Nature and the zombie virus.

I am sure this book is perfect for someone on the beginning of their awakening. That is why I bought the extra one. I thought I could give it as a gift.I was disappointed. I'm sorry. I am in the retired demographic and have read so much non-fiction on these subjects. This might attract the older Harry Potter follower. I wish you the best and hope you have a great writing career.

Sharing the Bread: An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving Story, by Pat Zietlow Miller

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Everyone helps prepare Thanksgiving dinner in this new holiday offering set in the 19th century. From fetching the cooking pot to folding pilgrim hats, each of the 10 members in this family has a job to do. Narrated by the younger brother in rhyming four-line verse, each spread highlights one aspect of the meal preparations and the relative responsible for it: sister kneads the bread dough, grandpa cooks the berries, auntie mashes the potatoes, etc. The youngster's excitement with the day is conveyed through repetition and simple rhymes and rhythm that mirror the ease with which the family works together in anticipation of their meal. McElmurry's illustrations depict a traditional middle-class family in aprons over their Sunday best. The gouache on watercolor paper affords a three-dimensional, old-fashioned quality to the setting and characters, while the ever-present family dog and cat offer relatable detail for today's digital natives. Muted tones of brown, gray, blue, and black dominate the color scheme and lend authenticity to this celebratory tribute to our national holiday. VERDICT This book captures the spirit of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner but may require hand-selling to kids to secure a trip to the circulation desk.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, MA

Delightfully illustrated and shows family working together By kimbacaffeinate Sharing the Bread by Pat Zietlow Miller and Jill McElmurry shares an old-fashion Thanksgiving story of a family working together to prepare for the feast. Delightfully illustrated it shows a classic 19th century American family at Thanksgiving. Everyone in the family participates in preparing for the big event. The children make festive placemats and grandma bakes the pies. The text is simple and geared for those four to eight years of age. There’s something about table fellowship that really brings people together and Thanksgiving fellowship especially. That’s begun to get lost in this era of Black Friday chaos and even Thanksgiving Day sales as the season to be grateful for what we have is overshadowed by the season of wanting what we don’t. McElmurry and Miller take us back to a simpler time to a simple story of a family coming together to prepare a special dinner. Each page of the book details a family member’s special contribution to the meal. Mama gets the cooking pot, Daddy makes the fire hot, Sister kneads the dough, Brother bastes the turkey…you get the idea. Though it’s never explicit, the central theme of the story is the idea of family and community. Each family member works together and therein lies the success of the meal. Heady stuff for a children’s book, but it’s couched in a simple and catchy rhyme perfect for reading aloud.Sharing the Bread is an old-fashioned Thanksgiving story that deserves to be read aloud the year round. The simple rhyme scheme—A-A-A-A-B-B-B-B—creates a lyrical pattern that relies on the syllable structure of each line to carry the rhyme’s flow forward. That makes it a unique sounding read and one that will stay in your head once it’s been read aloud. But strong mechanics only work with an underlying theme and there are a number of factors that pull the theme together. Community, family, table fellowship…all of these things make the book more than just rhyming words on a page and into a quaint little book that’ll warm your heart.

Beautiful and Entertaining Story By Aeicha @ Word Spelunking Sharing The Bread transports readers back to the 19th century and follows one family as they prepare a magnificent and yummy Thanksgiving meal!Told through sparse, lyrical rhymes, Sharing The Bread is a heartwarming and charming picture book. The simple, yet descriptive, rhymes are sweet and amusing in their sing-song flow. Little readers will easily be able to memorize their favorite lines and “read along”. From putting the turkey into the oven to making all the fixings and setting a gorgeous table, Sharing The Bread explores it all, and it does so with a lot of heart! The bright, captivating illustrations wonderfully capture the story and will engage little eyes, as young readers have fun pointing out all the clever details.Sharing The Bread is a beautiful and entertaining story that does a wonderful job of capturing the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

A soldier serving with the MIKE Force in Vietnam wakes every day knowing that it might  be his last. You don’t run with the indigenous Montagnard strikers expecting to live forever. That’s the nature of the beast that haunts American advisors serving with the tough little tribal volunteers in Vietnam’s misty, enemy-infested Central Highlands. It’s a tough, demanding duty and just the kind of thing that attracts military mavericks like former Peace Corps volunteer Galen St. Cyr, who discovers empathy and a new, mystical identity with the Jarai tribesmen of his MIKE Force unit. St. Cyr finds himself on the outskirts of the regular US military along with hand-picked American, Australian, and Vietnamese Special Forces advisors and quickly discovers that duty with Montagnard soldiers involves more than just beating the bush and killing the enemy.   The world of the Jarai is both primitive and complex, and learning to survive in it is the challenge of St. Cyr’s turbulent life. On a journey that becomes as much spiritual as military, he virtually becomes Jarai, taking a hauntingly beautiful native lover who commands a squad of assassins and listens to spirit voices, and deals with tribal separatist elements who are planning an anti-government coup.

MIKE Force: A Novel of Vietnam's Central Highlands War, by Shaun Darragh

Review Given the dearth of native characters and perspectives in books about America's Vietnam intervention, this work fills a gap: It is one of the most nuanced, even-handed novels on the conflict....it has more in common with Last of the Mohicans than Rambo or Delta Force. And that makes it far superior as a work of art-and far more fascinating as a work of fiction. -Andrew Salmon, author of To the Last Round: The Epic British Stand on the Imjin River and Scorched Earth, Black Snow: Britain and Australia in the Korean War.

About the Author Shaun Darragh enlisted in the Army in 1962 and served in Vietnam with both an A Team and the II Corps MIKE Force. He retired in 1989, after serving in a variety of Special Operations and conventional assignments, and subsequently served as a DIA Intelligence Specialist in Counterterrorism, Counternarcotics, and Special Operations at Fort Bragg, and in Mexico City, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Korea. He has authored numerous articles on special-operations history and doctrine in service journals and in ARMY and Vietnam magazines. A version of MIKE Force won the first-place prize in the 2010 Florida Writers Association Royal Palm Literary Awards for unpublished historical fiction.

Brown The Vietnam War was pretty complicated in general, but the MIKE Force (Mobile Strike Force Command) in the central highlands (a mountainous region in west central Vietnam that bidders on Laos and Cambodia) was absurdly complicated. US Special Forces plus Australian Army Training Team personnel organized and trained indigenous forces from the Degar, Bahnar, Hmong, Nung, Jarai, Khmer Krom and Montagnards ethnic groups to fight under US Army command, and later under the South Vietnamese army. It was a country wide mobile strike force battling the Viet Minh, Viet Cong, and the North Vietnamese army. Each of its constituent groups had ancient alliances and grievances with the other groups, with lowland Vietnamese of various stripes and with French, Dutch, Japanese, British and Americans who passed through. This novel does not shy away from the complexity, it faithfully chronicles the often divided and conflicting loyalties of its many characters. Moreover, there are a lot of major characters, each with his (in a few cases her) own history and ambitions. Yet it is an old-fashioned war novel in that these complexities never make the entire war seem insane or irrelevant. It is not politics or goals that are meaningful, it's what happens on the battlefield; the point is not who holds what territory, but the effect on the men who fight (plus a few key support personnel). This is Band of Brothers meets Beau Geste, not Catch-22.I know of only two other accounts of Mike Force, despite its obvious dramatic possibilities: a memoir by Lewis Burress and a bad Tom Selkeck made-for-TV movie. This book is clearly better than both in terms of accuracy and story-telling. The writing is journalistic, not embroidered, and it conveys both the complex facts as experienced by combat officers, and the feel of the place. On the negative side, it is a long book that would be easier to get through if the writing were more stylish and the focus a bit broader. And the author is not quite up to the task of guiding the reader through all the complexity, you may need to refer to maps and take notes to keep it all straight.I recommend this book as an enjoyable story that teaches some neglected history. It could be easier or more fun to read, and it doesn't break any new ground in understanding war, but it is realistic, action-packed and serious.

In Mike Force, Shaun Darragh has penned a very enjoyable read about an aspect of the Vietnam War that has received far too little attention. His novel is a story of Special Forces’ “private” army: the MIKE Force.Shaun Darragh served in Vietnam on a Special Forces Operational Detachment A (SFOD-A), and with the II Corps MIKE Force in the central highlands. Darragh has capitalized on his experiences in Vietnam and his strong historical knowledge to craft a novel that reflects the reality of working with indigenous forces in an extremely complex socio - cultural - politico environment. Consequently, his novel includes elements of a war story, a spy story, and, of course, a love story.. Of particular interest to this reader was Darragh’s reflection of the diversity that was Special Forces in the mid-Sixties. Veterans from the Korean War and the First Indochina War and members from the Australian Army soldiered alongside recent graduates from the high schools and colleges of America. Career NCOs and officers soldiered alongside “first termers.” The protagonist, Lieutenant Galen Saint Cyr, reflects that diversity having had a failed stint in the Peace Corps before enlisting in the U.S. Army. In some works, Montagnard and Vietnamese characters are often little more than caricatures. In reality, not all were good; nor were all bad and the roles Darragh has these characters play reflect that reality.Darragh’s work is ethnically, geographically, and historically accurate except for small exceptions required to lend credence to the story. Though classified as a historical novel, old MIKE Force hands should be able to identify a few of their comrades from whom Darragh drew his characters or relate to some of the actions he depicts. Vietnam veterans and veterans of MIKE Force, in particular, will find this story especially enjoyable. But, Darragh’s audience should not be limited solely to veterans; even civilians will enjoy this novel. Of import to the civilian reader, Darragh makes selective use of footnotes to assist the reader with acronyms and colloquialisms. Also of note, Darragh strikes an excellent balance with his use of ethnic colloquialisms in the dialogue. Novels have long impacted our understanding of history and the application of the military craft. The students of the Indochina wars and irregular warfare will want to put this work on the shelf next to Jean Larteguy’s The Centurions and The Praetorians.

Brooks Shaun writes from his personal knowledge of Vietnam and his time there during the Vietnam war with the 5th Special Forces group. This is not your regular war book it involves political intrigue, a Montangard separatist movement, and a love interest between the main character in the book and a female tribal leader.I thoroughly enjoyed this book

‘Would this loathsome inner creature which had poisoned his past and was now infecting the present leave its slimy traces on his future?’ The first novel in the trilogy, CALL OF FRANCE, Barfield School explores the thoughts, feelings and motivations of Michael Morgan. Disappointing academic results, a disastrous first love and a failed job experience have all gone to make Michael feel he hasn’t yet found his way in life. He decides to train to become a French teacher. But at his parents’ home the atmosphere is poisoned, school life soon becomes tedious, and his unfortunate handling of relations with two female colleagues leads to disturbing repercussions. He longs to wipe the slate of his past life clean by realizing his dream of starting afresh in France. But he’s also tempted to stay in England and develop an exciting business proposition. Which should he choose? Wouldn’t both allow him to escape from the tensions at home and school to a more fulfilling life? Or is he simply running away from himself? Barfield School is a dramatized portrayal of some of the things which led the author to become a longstanding expat in a country he’s always felt an irresistible attraction for.

Wholly Realistic By reader A charming account of a young man’s early life which, judging by the disclaimers at the beginning of the book, appears to be a thinly disguised biography. We see him in his student days when he first encounters the French language and literature and then in his first temporary job with a brewery (where I learned some interesting things about how they used to operate their franchises). Once qualified, he gets a job teaching French at a school, and we follow his ups and downs during his time there.Accustomed as one is to reading either about people on a trajectory towards important lives or about those who are sinking under the weight of poverty, squalor and abuse, this is a refreshing change. We see a young man emerging from a normal, stable, pedestrian background peopled by normal grandparents, aunts and uncles, to teach in a normal school where he adjusts to fit in with classroom discipline, common-room colleagues and difficult Deputy Heads. We also follow his weekend T-shirt making ventures, first fumbling with girls, and the ensuing relationships that peter out. It’s the sort of thing that is the fabric of every young man’s life, and as such is an interesting account. This is all our lives – and it’s admirable that the writer doesn’t try and dress it up as being something else. It’s a very good portrayal of the kind of life so many of us have lived. He even talks of the hero as a ‘plodder’ with an ‘absence of any real brilliance’ in a rather charmingly self-deprecating way. Refreshingly candid.By the end of the book, we see our hero about to embark on a teaching exchange in France – and no doubt on to greener fields. Roll on the next in the series.

The twisting story evokes the feel of the pulp Sci-Fi novels of the 50's and 60's bringing it into the 21st century. The pacing of the book never gives the reader time to catch their breath between one fantastical adventure to another. The book is an easy read at first blush, but can provide the reader some deep thoughts if they dig a little deeper. A highly enjoyable read.
