It is a travel diary, and is considered the best source for information about the locations of Jewish populations and the conditions of life in their communities from the Mediterranean basin and all of Europe at that time. At times it is a tedious read but nevertheless a unique remarkable document.

David I think Budapest is one of the most inexpensive but unique place to visit which made it very ideal for travellers to add on their list of places to go to. “Budapest Travel Guide” recommended the best spots in Budapest to have the most unforgettable travel experience. It provided the ‘must-haves’ and ‘must-do’ before and while travelling. It also gave lists of the best places in Budapest which you can add to your itinerary while in the city, there actually plenty of beautiful sites to choose from which will also suit your budget. Two interesting things I have learned from this guide is that the Budapest main areas are on either side of the Danube River and their currency is Hungarian Forint. This book shared good information that can help you familiarize and prepare yourself for your trip. A must have for people who are planning to visit Budapest.

Arthur Frommer's Europe (Color Complete Guide), by Arthur Frommer, Stephen Brewer, Jason Cochran, Teresa Fisher, Lucy Gillmore, Patricia Harris, Stephen Keeling, David Lyon, John Newcombe, Margie Rynn, Donald Strachan

About the Author The son of a Polish-born mother and an Austrian-born father, Arthur Frommer was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, but was stationed in Europe because of his fluency in German and Russian. During his service, he wrote and self-published a guidebook called The GI's Guide to Traveling in Europe in 1955 that was an immediate hit among his fellow soldiers. In 1957, Frommer created a civilian version called Europe on 5 Dollars a Day, which became an overnight best seller. He subsequently published guidebooks covering all parts of the globe. Frommer licensed his travel guide book business to Simon & Schuster in 1977. Eventually, the Frommer's series was purchased by John Wiley & Sons, and in August 2012, Google purchased the travel guides. Through all the exchanges, Arthur Frommer was always deeply involved with the guide books. In 2013, Frommer reacquired control of the guidebooks bearing his name and has come full circle, now self-publishing his iconic travel books again. Additionally, Arthur Frommer writes a travel column syndicated through King Features with his daughter Pauline Frommer, with whom he also co-hosts a weekly syndicated radio show, "The Travel Show with Arthur & Pauline Frommer." Arthur resides in New York City.Stephen Brewer has been writing travel guides for almost three decades. As an editor and writer, he has focused on European coverage for such magazines as Esquire, Connoisseur and Geo. He has written several previous guides for Frommer's and Insight, as well as authoring Beautiful Small Coastal Towns for Rizzoli. Stephen resides in New York City.Jason Cochran was twice awarded Guide Book of the Year by the Lowell Thomas Awards (Society of American Travel Writers) and once by the North American Travel Journalists Association. His writing has appeared in the New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, Travel + Leisure, USA Today, and Budget Travel, among many others. Jason has appeared as a host and commentator on CBS, Fox and AOL, to name a few. He currently edits Frommers.com. Jason resides in New York City.Author, photographer and travel writer Teresa Fisher has had a life-long love affair with Switzerland, since her first visits to the ski slopes as a young child. Since then she has written extensively on the country for a variety of publishers including Frommer’s, National Geographic and Thomas Cook. She is National Geographic Expeditions’ Switzerland expert and lecturer. She has also penned over thirty guidebooks and children’s travel reference books on a wide variety of destinations worldwide, and features periodically on BBC local radio as a travel adviser. Her travel features have appeared in such British publications as The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Times. For seven years, she lived in the Alps. Now, a mother of two, a fluent French and German speaker and a graduate in classical music, she is based in Gosport in the UK, but still spends much of her time skiing, sight-seeing or hiking in the Swiss Alps.Lucy Gillmore was the deputy travel editor at The Independent, but after eight years on the travel desk left London to move to Scotland. She specializes in travel and food and writes for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Independent and The Times and magazines including Food and Travel, Olive, House & Garden and Conde Nast Traveller. She also updated the Wallpaper City Guide to Edinburgh. After a couple of years in Edinburgh she headed even further north and now lives in the hills above Loch Ness in the Highlands.Patricia Harris and David Lyon drove almost every twisting mountain road as they researched three previous Frommer's guidebooks about Spain. As much as they enjoy the countryside, they find themselves inexorably drawn to the great cities of Madrid and Barcelona, where Spanish life and culture are writ large. Founders of HungryTravelers.com, they have a deep appreciation for the perfect codfish croqueta, an honest plate of patatas bravas, or a heap of peel-and-eat-garlic shrimp, ideally consumed at an outdoor table in one of Barcelona's ancient squares or at the crowded bar in a Madrid taberna. They write about travel, food, wine, spirits and contemporary art for journals as varied as the Robb Report, the Boston Globe and Westways. They reside in Boston, MA.Stephen Keeling has written for Frommer's for two decades. He has also written for the Independent, Daily Telegraph, various travel magazines, and numerous travel guides as well as authored the award-winning Frommer's Family Travel Guide to Tuscany and Umbria. Stephen resides in New York City.John Newcombe is a veteran travel journalist residing in Vienna, Austria.Margie Rynn has been living and writing about France for over 13 years. The author of Pauline Frommer's Paris, she has also written features for several travel magazines, as well as Time Out New York and Yoga Journal. In a previous New York life, she acted in a Broadway play and performed her own one-woman show. Margie is married to a kind and understanding Frenchman and they have a lovely twelve year old son. She lives in Paris.Donald Strachan is a writer and journalist who has written about Italy for publications worldwide, including National Geographic Traveler, the Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, and the Independent. He resides in London, England.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR EUROPEAN TRAVEL!!! By Carmelita This is an extremely important book for anyone planning a trip to Europe. It contains the current thinking of the famous Arthur Frommer regarding the ten major western European countries to which Americans travel. The preeminent authority on world travel, Arthur Frommer sets forth the pros and cons of each country, the major reason why each would be chosen or disregarded, and the key attractions and activities to consider. It also contains a lengthy preface by him dealing with western Europe as a whole, summing up the reasons why we travel there and what we should not miss. It is centered around what I find to be valuable, lengthy excerpts from the key Frommer travel guides dealing with each nation or region, including the top selections of hotels, restaurants, shops and sights by Frommer's foremost authors--all people who actually live in the areas being covered. Just recently the New York Times featured "Arthur Frommer's Europe" in their list of potential gifts to a Europe-bound Americans, which is excellent advice! If you or anyone you know plans on traveling to Europe this is an absolute must! If you haven't planned on traveling to Europe, this book will make you cash in those points and pack your bags! Absolutely inspiring!

Offering specifics on selecting your best lodgings in each country By Shelley Price-Geiger I really found this book very helpful as I explore a trip to Europe. It is clear while reading Mr Frommer's book, that he knows of what he writes, that his lifelong travelling experiences translate into well written commentaries of the ten most heavily visited European nations. I particularly found helpful his comments when he offers specific advice from the recent guidebooks he has published to these nations. Offering specifics on selecting your best lodgings in each country, the places where you are best off dining, the activites and the itinerary that you should follow are invaluably helpful in considering my options.I also found extremely valuable and provocative his well written preface to the book's specific advice, including some though provoking arguments as to why Americans go there. I imagine that this book will set off some very heated discussions and I would think this book is absolutely indispensable for anyone presently considering a trip to Europe.Frommer's Europe is a colorful book, beautifully illustrated. Highly recommend.

Arthur Frommer is the person who set off a torrent of American travel to Europe, and here he is again, summarizing for a modern reader the key elements of travel to the most popular European places. I have given a copy to friends planning to go there in April, and they have already responded that they plan to use it to create their itineraries and their daily activities. And of course, I will be briging along my own copy on a trip that I hope to make soon.

It's 1932, the Age of Flight, and twelve year old American John, with his mother and sister, is flying round the world in a plane piloted by his father. But problems beset them when their plane, a Sikorsky Amphibian, is forced to land on an iceberg off the shores of Greenland. How will they survive? But help comes from a Scottish deepsea fishing boat on the North Sea, pursuing its catch. On the boat is Colin, also twelve, a boy who has had to join the crew to upport his family after his own father died at sea. As the captain steers the boat through the perils of Icebeerg Alley, Colin learns his new job. This is a story about planes and boats, boys and families, and life on the high seas and in the air, a period of adventure and hardship. The story was inspired by the real life adventures of the American Flying Family and their rescue by the crew of the Scottish fishing vessel, The Lord Talbot.

Crowl This is a great yarn for intermediate age kids, both boys and girls. There are two narrators John and Colin. Initially I found that a bit disorientating, until I worked out how the second narrator fitted into the story. John and his family (father, mother and sister) are making a flight in a flying boat, one that will set a record. They have another adult on board who's primarily in charge of the radio and so on.The second narrator is Colin, a young Scottish lad whose fisherman father has recently been drowned at sea. Colin, being the oldest in the family - though he's not very old - has to become the income earner, and when we meet him he's signed up on a large fishing boat which is heading into Scandinavian waters for a long fishing trip.Things don't go well on the flying adventure, and the subsequent rescue takes up most of the book. The story whizzes along at a great pace, and even though it's full of detail of life on both the plane and the boat, it never gets bogged down in these things.

When New York brush manufacturer James Bradley founded Asbury Park in the late 1800s, he could hardly have imagined the course his seaside resort would take. Named for Methodist Episcopal bishop Francis Asbury, it was originally a Christian resort awash in Victorian architecture. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Asbury Park’s beach, boardwalk, restaurants, theaters, hotels, and amusements attracted thousands of vacationers every year. Later, the town gained a reputation as a gritty music mecca, known for the clubs where Bruce Springsteen got his start. All along, Asbury Park has had a unique ability to draw people to it, evidenced by the thousands of postcards sent home from the town each year.

Gryphons Aren't So Great (Adventures in Cartooning), by James Sturm, Alexis Frederick-Frost, Andrew Arnold

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—The Knight and his horse, Edward, enjoy jumping from great heights into the lake below, but the Knight is soon entranced with the idea of flying after a chance encounter with a gryphon. The "Adventures in Cartooning" cast returns in a medieval story told through sequential art, reminding readers of the loyalty of a good friend and that sometimes taking a ride on a gryphon isn't all it's cracked up to be. Much of the art is composed of simple shapes drawn in a thick line, producing characters that stand out and can be easily drawn or replicated by young readers. The story progresses quickly through the paneled art and the speech bubbles are illustrated to emphasize the emotion conveyed in the dialogue. The character design is great and the art works hand-in-hand with the text to move the story forward. VERDICT The memorable tale will be enjoyed by a wide range of readers time and again.—Matthew C. Winner, Ducketts Lane Elementary School, Elkridge, MD

Haagen This is a sweet little book with simple yet ingenious drawings and a short but telling story. Mr. Sturm has a real knack for cartooning, all the pages are a feast for little eyes and his characters are very likeable and very true, even if you never really meet a gryphon of your own. As the book points out, sometimes your best friends are the ones closest to you !

PSA: Gryphons aren't so Great By Melaina Lara I have not seen a Adventures in Cartooning book before, but I could not resist picking this up because of the title alone. Gryphons aren't so Great, just sounds like the perfect public service announcement for kids. (And it kinda is, haha!)The cartoon/graphic novel styling is perfect for my younger reader who is always looking into to taking his older brothers graphic novels. It's easy to read, with bold words and easy to follow panels. The story was cute, and our main character learns that being friends with Gryphons comes with some unique challenges. What really reels you in is the great illustrations, simple yet super expressive graphics had my son laughing.Highly recommend, this is great for reading aloud, great for reluctant readers, and great for avid readers. I would say this is perfect for the 5 year old age range.

Sweet, fun story for budding young graphic novel fans By Bookphile We're all big fans of this series in this house, after having been enchanted by the sweet and funny Sleepless Knight, so we were very excited to see this new installment was imminent. This time around, the brave knight and faithful steed Edward face a new problem when a gryphon shows up on the scene and threatens their stalwart friendship. The knight is thrilled by the novelty of this new companion, and Edward can't help but feel jealous and left behind. As you can probably tell from that summary, this is at heart a story about learning how to navigate the ever-changing tapestry of social lives, which is a great topic for young children. My six-year-old son liked talking about the story and how Edward felt badly because the knight was so excited to spend time with the gryphon. In the end, the knight learns that true friendship is to be protected and not taken for granted. If I have one slight critique with this book it's that I would also have liked to see the gryphon become part of the circle, with the three learning that enlarging your circle of friends can be a good thing. Still, I liked that the book has a gentle message about how real friends are the ones who stick by you, even when they're nursing hurt feelings as a result of your actions. The art is very bright, colorful, and playful, as with previous books. Each page is divided up into multiple panels, so it's a great starter graphic novel for budding readers. My son especially liked this aspect of the book, as his dad and sister are very into graphic novels, but the books they read are typically too mature for him. This series offers him a nice go-to, with storylines that work really well for kids his age, and language that's simple enough for most kids to be able to handle reading it independently. If they need help, it also makes for a great read for Mom, Dad, or another loved one to share. As with previous books in this series, the insides of both the front and back cover contain simple examples of how to draw various characters from the book, which just adds to the overall enjoyment of the story. I really like how these books both encourage a love of reading comics while also making the idea of drawing your own comics accessible. We look forward to more!

The Naughty List, by Michael Fry, Bradley Jackson

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—When the abandoned, zombie-eyed inflatable Santa that Dad left on the roof for an entire year (while he was off in North Dakota working in the oil fields) deflates and attacks Bobbie Mendoza, leaving her with a broken wrist and an epic case of angst, Bobbie decides that Christmas stinks and she is going to ignore it entirely. Then she realizes that her little brother's happiness depends on his belief in Christmas and Santa Claus. Her attempt to get him the gift of his dreams lands them both on Santa's Naughty List, which turns out to be a lot more serious than she could have imagined. Cinematic mayhem includes the evil Watcher, a depressed Santa, Larry the Red-Antlered Reindeer, a helpful whale, lots of refried beans, murderous snow angels, Seal Team Nine (made up of actual marine mammals with helicopter beanies), and an entire contingent of blow dryer-wielding snowmen. Bobbie and her maybe not-so-crazy uncle Dale are tasked with taking down the Watcher and ending the Naughty List for good, and both learn Important Things about courage, family, and the holiday spirit. VERDICT This graphic novel/fantasy hybrid should appeal to graduates of Captain Underpants.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

Review "Bobbie embarks on a whirlwind North Pole adventure that involves robo-narwhals, angry snow angels, and the Naughtiest Child in the World. Like Fry's Odd Squad books, the series unfolds through a mix of text, comics sequences, and illustrated gags that will keep kids laughing from start to finish, even as the authors balance the wackiness with some touching family moments." - Publishers Weekly"The copious illustrations, black-and-white cartoons reminiscent of Fry's comic strip, "Over the Hedge," add fun, clarity, and (oddly enough) believability to the text. Despite the female main focus, boys will enjoy the story too. References to butts, farts, and lead reindeer Larry's incontinence will cause mirth and the occasional guffaw. Readers of both genders will take to this original and hilarious story--so long as they do not still believe in Santa." - Kirkus Reviews"A great story, lively drawings, and a cast of unforgettable characters. What else could you want for Christmas? The Naughty List is a book for all seasons!" --Lincoln Peirce, bestselling author of the Big Nate series "If you are like me you normally don't read Christmas books because there aren't enough robo-narwhals, submarines, refried beans, and Ninja Santas in them. Fry and Jackson just fixed that." --Tom Angleberger, bestselling author of the Origami Yoda series

The plot is smartly crafted, developing from a zany, compelling beginning into a sweet, unexpected conclusion. The characters are hysterical and so smartly illustrated that I laughed out loud (and I'm a grown up), yet the message delivered is such a positive one. This is a book that appeals to all ages, with many different levels of writing and humor, but it especially fills a need for Christmas books for 9 yo and up. It will become a Christmas classic around our house.

To do that she must go to other side to disable the Watcher while dealing with Ninja Santa, Larry the Reindeer, and "crazy" Uncle who lives in their basement.I loved the story and characters. I laughed out loud. The drawings are as much a part of the story as the words. A perfect story for the Christmas season. Just like Bobbie, you'll never see Christmas the same way again.

A Boy and His Dog

MY NAME IS BILLY SURE. I’m an inventor. I’m also the CEO of my very own company: SURE THINGS, INC. You might have heard of our products. You might even have some of them. The ALL BALL that changes into different sports balls with the touch of a button? That’s us. The SIBLING SILENCER that, well, silences siblings? Yep, us too. DISAPPEARING REAPPEARING MAKEUP and STINK SPECTACULAR? Well, you get the picture. Sure Things, Inc. has had one success after another. The best part of being in business is my business partner. Get it? Manny Reyes is my best friend and Chief Financial Officer (CFO for short), which is a fancy way of saying that he takes care of money while I create inventions. Manny’s a genius when it comes to marketing, numbers, planning, selling, advertising, computers. . . . I could go on. But basically, I invent our products and Manny figures out how to make them into hits. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but in a nutshell, that’s our story. It’s a Tuesday evening. I’m home after a full day at school, followed by a full day at work. It’s not easy juggling two lives. My typical day is: Get up (I suppose you could have guessed that part, right?); shower; go to school; come home and pick up my dog, Philo; then go with Philo to the World Headquarters of Sure Things, Inc. (also known as Manny’s garage). Then I come home, eat dinner, do my homework, maybe read a book or watch TV, and then go to sleep. And you thought you were busy with soccer and school plays and—well, I guess you’re busy too. I don’t mean to complain—it’s just that sometimes all this gets a bit overwhelming. That’s when I have to remember how much I enjoy inventing stuff. At this moment, I’m in the “finished school, finished work, finished dinner, finished homework” portion of my day. I’m hanging out in the living room playing with Philo. “You want this, boy?” I ask, leaning forward in my seat, waving Philo’s favorite chew toy at him. It’s a thick rope made up of colored strands all woven together. Or at least they used to be woven together. Months of chewing and pulling have taken their toll. Philo jumps up from his doggy bed on the other side of the room, dashes over to where I’m sitting, and grabs one end of the toy in his teeth. I yank my end back. Philo bares his teeth and growls, a low growl that’s as much a moan or a whine as a true growl. “Who’s a FIERCE BEAST?” I ask, moving the toy—and Philo’s head along with it—from side to side. Philo tugs hard, pulling me from my chair. I tumble to the rug and start laughing. Letting go of my end of the toy, I rub Philo’s belly. This always makes him go a little crazy. I roll over, and then Philo jumps on top of me. We tumble across the room, me laughing, Philo growling and barking. “What’s going on down there?!” shouts a voice from upstairs. “Some of us have homework to do, y’know!” That would be Emily, my sister. Last week, Emily only spoke in a British accent. Before that, she only wore black. Who knows what she’ll be into next? “Just playing with Philo,” I call back up the stairs. “Well, do it quietly!” she screams down. I pick up Philo’s chew toy and hold it over my head. “Do you want this, boy?” I say in an excited whisper, waving the colorful, floppy rope back and forth. Philo’s head follows the moving rope, as if he were watching a Ping-Pong match. “Ready?” I ask. Philo backs up a few steps. “Go get it!” I shout, tossing the rope over his head. Philo turns and dashes after the rope. He snatches it up in his mouth, then trots contentedly back toward me, dropping it at my feet. “Again?” I ask. “RUUFFF!” he replies. Sometimes I can almost understand what Philo is saying. I pick up the rope and waggle it back and forth, then fling it past him. This time Philo turns his head casually and watches the rope zoom by, then he turns back to look at me. So much for understanding what Philo says. “I thought you wanted to play, boy?” I say. Philo stares at me like he’s never seen me before. “Go get it!” I say again. Philo continues staring. Oh well. I walk to the other side of the room, pick up the toy, and come back. “One more time.” I toss the rope back over Philo’s head. It bounces a couple of times, then disappears into the dining room. This time Philo turns and chases after it. He speeds from the living room into the dining room. And then doesn’t come back. “Get the toy, Philo!” I shout. No Philo. No toy. “Bring me the toy, Philo!” I yell again. “Go get the stupid toy yourself!” Emily shouts from upstairs. She totally does not get the point of this game. But she may be right. I’m beginning to wonder where Philo went. As I step from the living room into the dining room, I find the chew toy sitting on the floor. Looking up, I see that Philo is all the way on the other side of the room. “It’s right here, boy,” I say, pointing down at the toy. Philo paces back and forth across the floor on the far side of the dining room. He stops, sniffs under some furniture, then turns and walks back to the other side of the room, where he repeats the sniffing, then the pacing, then the sniffing, and on and on. As he paces and sniffs, Philo lets out a series of low moans and short yelps. “URRRR . . . YIP-YIP!” he says. “What is it, boy?” I ask. “URRRR . . . YIP-YIP!” he repeats. Now I really wish I could understand what Philo is saying. In fact, there have been many times when I’ve wished I could understand him. Things would be so much easier. I could just give him what he wants and he’d be happy. And then I wouldn’t spend so much time wondering what he’s trying to say. And that’s when it hits me. I know what Sure Things, Inc.’s next product should be! I will make a translator for dogs! This isn’t the first time this invention idea has come up. The first time I ever thought of it, I had just discovered the blueprints for the Sibling Silencer on my desk, but I didn’t know where they had come from. Let me explain. . . . You see, I always have trouble figuring out how to make my inventions work . . . at least when I’m awake. When I finally give up and go to sleep, the completed blueprints MAGICALLY appear on my desk the next morning. You may be wondering who so kindly and quietly draws the blueprints for me in the middle of the night. I wondered the same thing at first. It turns out that I do! In my sleep! Here’s how we found out. My first invention, the All Ball, was a hit, but I didn’t know where the working blueprints came from. They had appeared on my desk one morning, and I didn’t recognize the handwriting. So when I was struggling to come up with the working blueprints for Sure Things, Inc.’s next invention, the Sibling Silencer, Manny rigged an alarm system so that whoever was sneaking into my room to leave the blueprints would get caught. Except the only one who tripped the alarm was Philo. When he did, I discovered new blueprints on my desk, which meant that Philo saw who put them there. What I didn’t know was that Manny also set up a webcam and watched me work on the blueprints in my sleep. That’s right. Some people talk in their sleep; some people walk in their sleep; but me, I invent things in my sleep! But before I knew that, I remember wishing at that moment for a device that could translate what Philo was saying through his barks. And that’s when the idea for the DOG TRANSLATOR first came into my head. I have to tell Manny about this! The time has arrived for the Dog Translator! I start to head up to my room to send Manny an e-mail, when I hear Philo scraping his paw against the floor. Turning back, I see him reach under a cabinet and drag out a doggy treat. A dust-covered, stale treat. That thing must have been under there for weeks! Philo happily munches away. Yuck! Dogs can be really gross sometimes. See, if I had a Dog Translator, Philo could have just told me he wanted a treat. Of course, Philo doesn’t need a translator for that. Like most dogs, he always wants a treat! I dash up the stairs. I have to pass Emily’s room in order to get to mine. “What? You’re done making noise downstairs, so you decided to come here and make noise upstairs?” she asks in her usual warm, loving tone. “The lightbulb just went off!” I say, pointing to my head, hardly able to contain my excitement. Emily shrugs without looking up from her desk. “So ask Dad to replace it, genius.” “No, I mean I just came up with the idea for my next invention,” I say, smiling. “Uh-huh,” she replies, tapping away on her phone, her thumbs blazing. “I’ll alert the media.” “Actually, that’s Manny’s job,” I point out. Emily just shakes her head and rolls her eyes. “Oh, you were being sarcastic, right?” With Emily, sometimes it’s hard to tell. I head into my room, flip open my laptop, and shoot off a quick e-mail to Manny. Hey, Manny. I just came up with an idea for Sure Things, Inc.’s next invention! Billy A few seconds later I get a reply. And this is so Manny: Great! I’ve got the marketing strategy all planned! I write back: But wait, you don’t even know what the invention is! Manny writes back: Right, right. Whatcha got? I write back: The Dog Translator! I hold my breath waiting for a reply. A few seconds later it comes: LOVE IT! We’ll talk tomorrow. That’s my partner!
