I love how she has been able to take older tales and reshapes them into something remarkable. I personally cannot wait to take this book off the shelf and read it to my children on Christmas Eve this year.The Knights Before Christmas is just as the title suggests. It is a book that it based on the tale The Night Before Christmas. However, in this story it is about the Knights in a castle that are trying to protect the castle from Santa whom they believe is trying to invade. I really enjoyed how all the lines ran so smoothly and how it was so well put together, illustrations included that I could almost imagine it as being the original story. It was written in a way that it kept the rhythm and the familiarity of the original story for the readers to have the opportunity to be drown into each page as the story progressed. I smiled, I giggled and I laughed as I was reading through it. I enjoyed looking at the illustrations and the added phrases within the speech bubbles that helped to give humor as well as context to some of the pages.I strongly believe that this could become one of the next loved Christmas stories in modern day.

Santa has a list and wants to deliver gifts to the chivalrous brave knight, silent knight, & polite knight. But they think he’s trying to invade their castle. After some tossing of bounty back and forth, both sides think they’ve won (which is nice). The knights enjoy their bounty of gifts and Santa wishes us all a Merry Christmas and a good knighty night. (One of the knights turns out to be a girl when her helmet comes off.)

By Deb It was the night before Christmas and all was quiet as three knights stood watch over the king's realm. Two up in the towers and one in front of the drawbridge as they guarded the castle under the dark starry night. Nothing could possibly get by Brave Knight or Polite Knight, but just maybe they could get by Silent Knight who was getting ready for his "long winter's nap." But wait, what was that noise?Everyone soon sprang into action, including that sleepyhead, Silent. Up the tower stairs they ran, swords drawn and at the ready. "The out on the drawbridge / there arose such a clatter, / those knights sprang to the tower / to see what was the matter." There was a red sleigh in the distance with footprints in the snow. Someone was heading to the castle, but who could it be?"Moldy minstrals!" shouted Polite. It was none other than Santa Claus and his reindeer ... make that dragons ... looking for a chimney. "Castles lack chimneys!" / Polite Knight told the lout. / "So dash away, dash away! / Invader, get out!" No way was Santa going to leave and 'round and 'round the castle he went looking for a way in. The three dutiful knights began to pore over Chapter 17 in their "So You Want to Repel Invaders" book. Were they going to be able to get rid of that pesky Santa without having to do battle?This is a fa la la la funny tale of a trio of knights who try to fend off Santa and his dragons. Of course all young readers will know what Santa is up to and will be cheering him on. Joan Holub's inimitable rhyming scheme doesn't miss a beat (as usual) as she taps out her knightish parody of Santa's visit a la Clement Clarke Moore style. The artwork meshes well and adds to the hilarity of the tale. The "Knights of the Iron Underwear" vs. Santa and his eight prancing dancing dragons is not to be missed!This book courtesy of the publisher.

113 of 124 people found the following review helpful. Mind bender anyone? By A Customer Although it isn't very long, Flatland does take a long time to read. This isn't because it is boring, or because it is hard to read, but because of the large amount of digestion one need's to fully comprehend (and to fully enjoy) this book. Even this book contains only 82 pages, it is by no means light reading. The book was originally released in 1884 under Abbott's pseudonym A Square. In the story we follow the journey of a square who lives in a land of two dimensions--a flat land. In it class, and ultimately intelligence, is determined by the amount of sides that a shape has. As the amount of sides a shape has decreases, we find that it also is more emotional and apt to cause destruction through their pointed corners. Women are depicted as straight lines, but one has to take into account the time that this book was published. One can also disregard the story as having any relations to anything in our society and enjoy it for what it is, a mind bending social criticism. In this tale we follow the aforementioned square through his everyday life. we learn what it is like to exist in only two dimensions. We learn of how rain falls form the north and disappears to the south and how gravity is a minute force that pulls to the south ever so slightly. We follow him through the government and through social classes, and the discrimination that comes with them. When his son talks of geometric impossibilities such as 23 (cubed) he has a dream of a lesser land than his, a land called line land. IN it there is not two but only one dimension of being. Through discussion with the kind of lineland, we are offered insight into why our hero the square cannot conceive of the third dimension. Later our hero is visited by a great being, a sphere that appears to him seemingly out of nowhere. This confuses the square very much, and even more when the sphere tries to explain how he passed into his dimension from the third. After heated debate, the sphere takes him and shows him the third dimension, turning our hero into an evolved form of him self, a cube. Form his higher vantage point the square is able to see the innards of those who reside in flatland. He receives tutoring from the sphere about this new dimension and all that it entails. He learns of how limited the field of vision is for those living in flatland, both literally and figuratively. With his previous limits of reality stripped and with his eye opened to the truth, the square quickly follows logic and asks to see the insides of the sphere, and wishes to ascend further into greater dimensions, fourth dimensions and fifth and onward and upward. The sphere is appalled by this heresy and send our hero back to the limited realm of flatland. Here he tries to convince others to be enlightened, but cannot find success. He has a second dream involving the dimension of pointland, no dimensions. The being inhabiting this land is of nothing and knows nothing but itself, which is nothing. There fore this being cannot be disappointed by anything, because it cannot conceive of anything other than itself. We can see the religious parallels to Hinduism and Buddhism here. The completely content creature is of nothingness, much like the state that Buddhists try to achieve, and the outward ranking by dimension not sides can be seen in Hinduism in the spiral path towards God that the Hindu believe they travel along passing from one point on the spiral to another with each passing life. In this land of math all of the lands are contained within each other, much like the rings of the spiral. Finally after this dream the square realizes the futility of trying to convince others through speech, and he feels he must do it through demonstration. Folks hear of his heresy and bring him to the court for the climax of the book. Whether or not the plot of the novel itself is very entertaining, the ability to get your head around concepts that can only be experienced through the mind is challenged thoroughly by this novel. It is a must read for anyone who thinks that they are well educated, as it will quickly tell you just where you stand, theologically, philosophically and mathematically.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. Unimaginable Dimensions By Jon Linden Flatland is a unique and brilliant treatise on a trifurcated level. It is a sociological statement, a mathematical statement and a religious statement all rolled into an incredibly astute 82 pages. The book centers mostly on the differences between a two dimensional world and a three dimensional world; but comments on society, law, prejudice, religion, and proselytizing. The book especially points out the difficulty in envisioning a greater reality and a greater vision than is commonly observed by any individual in any dimension or society. The author's premise relates to things existing in a "plane geometry" world as opposed to a "Euclidian Geometric" three dimensional figure universe. The book carefully illustrates to one denizen of Flatland how the three dimensional world of space works and/or exists. Upon finally understanding the "Gospel of Three Dimensions" our protagonist goes on to try and apply the same arithmetic logic and geometric analogs to a fourth dimensional universe. Shouldn't there exist a fourth dimensional universe that allows an entity to look down upon the three dimensional universe with as much transparency as one can from three dimensions to two?Alas, things become different in dimensions other than the first, a world of lines, the second, a world of shapes and the third, a world of objects. In the zero dimension, all things are a point. Mathematically we know that any number raised to the "0" power equals 1 and therefore, all things in the zero dimension resolve into one single omnipotent point. This condition would also exist in the fourth dimension; as those of us in the third dimension have no model to compare it to. Envisioning a fourth dimension, even with time as the fourth dimension is truly difficult or impossible for us in the third dimension.Interspersed with this witty and intellectual dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles. This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his writing.Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.

It's printed directly from the digitized (and free) copy from Google Books and has clearly had NO editing work done. The book is filled with references to figures that were not included, mangled words, and seemingly random breaks and markings in some spots. This would be fine for a free digitized text online, but is entirely unacceptable for a paid-for product, especially a short book that would be similarly priced in a physical store.

A load of highly dangerous weapons is in transit from the Arizona manufacturer to Fort Hood, Texas. A very sophisticated hijack plot interrupts their journey and the President, his Cabinet, and the U.S. military have to figure out how to get them out of the wrong hands. Early in his first of three tours in Vietnam, Detective Hunter Morgan learned never to say the following: “Well, things can’t get any worse than this!” They can and do when a sniper starts shooting in Baltimore. Railroad catastrophes take place on both sides of the country and terrorists strike two major American airports, driving the elections news into the background temporarily, until one of the primary candidates turns up missing . . . last seen with a Secret Service Agent. The Vietnam Veterans of America Veteran newspaper reviewed Primary Candidates and said the following: "Mike Sutton’s experiences in the Vietnam War are the basis for his first novel, No Survivors (2004). Henry Small Deer was a primary character in No Survivors and returns in Primary Candidates (War Zone Press, 308 pp), as an authority on armaments. All of the characters of Sutton’s second novel, High Order (2009), also have returned. The author informs us that the novel is inspired by historical events. As the title implies, this novel is about politicians who want to be president. Three senators are featured doing what senators do when they think they should have their party’s nomination to the nation’s highest office. The poisonous worm in this political apple is a shipment of Stinger missiles from Arizona to Fort Hood, Texas. At this point the book becomes a hijack novel in which law enforcement agencies scramble to retrieve the missiles and kill the hijacking criminals. Something serious always goes wrong in a scenario of this sort. If it doesn’t, there is no story to hold our attention. Detective Hunter Morgan is one of the law enforcement people who goes after the missiles. Naturally, he did three tours in Vietnam. One is never enough for a character of this sort. He’s a glutton for punishment. Many more things go awry in this thriller: snipers in Baltimore, railroad catastrophes, terrorist strikes on major American airports. Then one of the senators “turns up missing.” That’s one of my favorite all-time clichés. This book is a rouser, though. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy thrillers and to those who enjoyed Sutton’s previous novels. Sutton, a witty author, also provides my favorite Jane Fonda quote out of many hundreds I’ve read in Vietnam War books. In this case the words come from a senator speaking to the President: 'Jane Fonda,” the senator says, 'has a better chance of becoming the National Commander of the Vietnam Veterans of America than the Desert Fox does winning in November.' This caught me by surprise so late in the book, and caused me to laugh aloud, something I rarely do when I read Vietnam War thrillers. Congrats to Sutton for his wit and wisdom." — David Willson

"Primary Candidates" by Mike Sutton By Mary Deremer I would like to commend Mike Sutton on yet another rip roaring, bomb blasting, enemy seeking, target hitting ride in "Primary Candidates". And , dare I say, if he had planned the initial attack on Vietnam, instead of the pen pushing polititions in Washington, there would have been NO war there. That would have been all of the "advice" they would have needed.With all of Mike's personal experience, his vast knowledge in tactics, weaponsry, munitions, logistics, etc., added to his very likable and capable charactors from previous books, "Primary Candidates" is another WINNER!!!I can hardly wait for the next one.

The main character is the type of man who we all wish were defending us. It is a must read for anyone who likes thrillers, action and suspense. It was hard to put down

By Richard Gregory Distant Challenges is a fast reading novel that keeps you hanging on from chapter to chapter. I especially enjoyed theclever new language Gregory Hewitt brought into the story; although at times it was slightly taxing to read. Surprisingly, the storyhas an old fashion feel to it and builds slowly until its dramatic ending. I enjoyed the short chapters, mainly because of my attentionspan, and look forward to any of his new books. Hope he continues this as a series.

I rather enjoyed every scene here. This story has built up around One Eye, Ashlie, Milo, Ludwig, Snowball, Winston, Scratch and others. They are the members of the Bully Boys gang. Story reveals how they have engaged in defeating their main enemy called the Marauders led by tyrannous Nicodemus. I wish I could see this enjoyable narrative in an animated movie or a cartoon. I read this story with my 8 years old niece and I could see that she was counting fingers to know about the fate of these cats. The E Street Bully Boys is a combination of curiosity, fear, applause, harmony and all. Dennis Stamey has done a marvelous job because this is very simple and easy to understand for every child. Most importantly this is not only for children but also for the elders. The core of this plot is truly interesting and highly enjoyable. Personally I love to read these kinds of fantasy stories. So dear author, I’m in a hurry to read more and more creatively written stories from you. I heartily recommend this novel creation for everyone including both children and adults. Believe me; Dennis impressed me through this recherché narrative. Don’t miss it. I’m giving huge five stars plus for her wonderful writings.

They still keep with the basic story of Violet, Jesse, Henry and Benny living with their grandfather and solving mysteries so they fit well with the original books. In this particular story, the Aldens find themselves at the Calgary Stampede (reminds me of the Grand Old Opry tradition) with a famous singer (Judy Simon) and her niece (Daisy). Judy has a pin from when she performed as a young unknown at the Stampede and gives it to Daisy to have during her first performance. The pin is an important part of Calgary history but also a family heirloom and it goes missing just before Daisy takes the stage. Will the irreplaceable good luck charm be found? Can the Aldens discover the thief before Daisy's next performance?Read The Mystery at the Calgary Stampede to find out!

I've read over a hundred of the boxcar series. The Aldens Grandfather takes them on a surprise trip to Canada to see his friend, a famous singer. She gives her niece a pin which is very valuable to their family, but when it gets stolen right before the concert, the boxcar children only have two days to find out! Edward Whymper ( 1840 – 1911) was an English mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865; four members of his party were killed during the descent. Whymper also made important first ascents on the Mont Blanc massif and in the Pennine Alps, South America, and the Canadian Rockies. His exploration of Greenland contributed an important advance to Arctic exploration. Whymper wrote several books on mountaineering, including Scrambles Amongst the Alps. Since Mr. Whymper published his "Scramble! among the Alps," his name has been a household word among his countrymen. The quality of the man is again shown in his new book of ‘ Travels among the ‘ Great Andes of the Equator.’ From the rocky island of Diego Ramirez, south of Cape Horn, nearly to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, which opens into the Arctic Ocean, the Cordilleras of the Andes form a sort of gigantic backbone to the two American continents, following the western coastline for almost three thousand leagues. For reasons which he explains, Mr. Whymper determined to explore the summits of this chain, which occur in the republic of the Equator, or Ecuador. Though weapons and ammunition of war were neither taken nor needed, these natural fortresses were not to be stormed, for any useful purpose, without the preparation, forethought, and expense that are suggestive of a military campaign. Had Mr. Whymper’s ambition only been to set foot on the tiptop of Chimborazo, an attempt in which Humboldt and Boussingault had successively failed, he might probably have gratified his desire at far less cost and with far less trouble than that which he, in fact, expended upon that lordly mountain and some of its peers. But he was bent upon surveying the country, ascertaining the true heights of its chief eminences, comparing the accuracy of the aneroid with that of the mercurial barometer, bringing home specimens of the rocks and of the flora and fauna of the elevated regions, and determining the range of altitude within which various species of plants and animals can live and flourish. The chemistry between the characters, the descriptive way that the author give us a view into her characters lives and hearts, the dry sense of humor that permeates her book make me want to keep reading even after the last page! I didn't want the story to end! Thank you for this treasure.

The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. His notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work. The Importance of Being Earnest has been revived many times since its premiere. It has been adapted for the cinema on three occasions. In The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), Dame Edith Evans reprised her celebrated interpretation of Lady Bracknell; The Importance of Being Earnest (1992) by Kurt Baker used an all-black cast; and Oliver Parker's The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) incorporated some of Wilde's original material cut during the preparation of the original stage production.

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

The characters are all aristocratic British so full of folly I was rolling with laughter. They bungle everything with witty humor and sharp remarks. It is worth reading for the English alone, the language that is, not to knock the people though. I can't really sum it up without ruining the plot, but, think Shakespeare comedy. I can say no more.

While the school year has barely started we've already read The Power of One, Invisible Man, Fountianhead, Beowulf, Dubliners, that satire about eating children, and a couple poems. Of these, only the satire wasn't ridiculously serious and philosophical (well, it was still critical, but funny and weird in its own right). While I really enjoy the novels and stories we've read so far (except Fountainhead, which has become a sort of trigger word for me...just mention Howard Roark and I go off like a smoking gun) I don't think I've ever had so much fun reading a classic piece of literature.Honestly, AP English Aside and coming from an avid reader and 17 year old, this drama is HILARIOUS. I was practically dying of laughter during class hearing my classmates read the snarky, biting quips of 1895 british aristocrats lying and deceiving each other. The plot is absolutely hilarious, the characters all dreadful in the best ways, and the social critisism well executed and scathing in its farce-driven shell. And for those expecting a drawn out, boring play that only disappoints compared to the glorious promises of some Amazon reviewers...DON'T. The pacing of the play is very fast-paced and witty, moving from one scene to the next with an easy to follow but fast speed, and even to a modern audience it's sure to get a chuckle out of the most firm unbeliever. Reading through the first two acts, the whole class was cracking up laughing and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves thouroughly. It was a nice break between satires about eating babies and old English epics, that's for sure, and I'm definitely going to order my own copy, it was so good.So overall, 10/10 would read again.

I preview all the books I let my kids read up to a certain age. Some I just check for content. This book I really got into. It was an enjoyable read, that I will be letting my older kids read. I loved the charters and I loved many of the lines. They are thought provoking, which is something I hope to find in books for my kids. I really want my children to think for themselves. This book teaches you that is OK to be different and find your own way. Its a real treat when an adult writes a kids book, with a deep lesson (or in this case lessons) to be learned. I can't wait to see what happens next! I believe the kid's and I will enjoy the whole series.

By Chris Dailey Ever since I had first heard about Hank Hudson on Clark’s daily podcast The Write Life, I was more than excited to read it. Now that I have finally read it, that excitement was more than justified. I loved getting to know Hank, his trusty companion Dog, and I really enjoyed every step of his journey as he searched for the family that had left him behind. This book was full of action, adventure, colorful characters, (I really liked Misha) and a surprise twist that caught me very off guard, which has made me very excited for when the next chapter in the Hank Hudson series is released! I very much enjoyed this book, and I can’t wait to share it with my family. This is definitely a must read that will be enjoyed by all ages.

About the Author Poul Anderson (1926–2001) grew up bilingual in a Danish American family. After discovering science fiction fandom and earning a physics degree at the University of Minnesota, he found writing science fiction more satisfactory. Admired for his “hard” science fiction, mysteries, historical novels, and “fantasy with rivets,” he also excelled in humor. He was the guest of honor at the 1959 World Science Fiction Convention and at many similar events, including the 1998 Contact Japan 3 and the 1999 Strannik Conference in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Besides winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards, he has received the Gandalf, Seiun, and Strannik, or “Wanderer,” Awards. A founder of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, he became a Grand Master, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.   In 1952 he met Karen Kruse; they married in Berkeley, California, where their daughter, Astrid, was born, and they later lived in Orinda, California. Astrid and her husband, science fiction author Greg Bear, now live with their family outside Seattle.

Kufahl "Fire Time" is a 1974 novel by Poul Anderson, a prolific and pretty consistent SF author. No one of his best books (like Tau Zero, The Broken Sword or Brain Wave) but better than a handful of others that I've read (e.g. Operation Chaos, Mirkheim). Its typical Anderson: there's some flaws, but its readable and a good break from say, Victor Davis Hanson or Barry Malzberg. It takes place on another planet, with an alien race (the Ishtarians) described compellingly enough to be featured in Barlowe's Guide to Aliens, which is a Hall of Fame of sorts in SF literature.There's a lack of internet discussion about "Fire Time," that I could find today, despite the fact that 1.) it did get nominated for a Hugo back when it was published (1974) and 2.) it was written during the ugly concluding years of the Vietnam War, a time unfortunately more and more relevant to our current situation. Books like "Star Fox" made Anderson a pretty popular SF writer, but one who drew criticism for his supposedly pro-war attitude. I read somewhere that "Fire Time" was a kind of response to this criticism, even mentioning the main character of "Star Fox" in its pages.It would be a mistake to view "Fire Time" as an anti-war book. There are two wars going on here: one is between the nomadic barbarians desperate to avoid the devastating effects of climate change (the "Fire Time" of the title) and their semi-nomadic semi-civilized counterparts that interact with human colonists, and the other is an interstellar war between the huamns and another technologically advanced race. The human colonists on the planet in question contend with local sympathies and bureaucratic thumb-twiddling, and leave some time to explore their (ugh) feelings for each other. The larger human war receives the criticism in this story, while the Ishtarians' war is mostly described in heroic terms. Anderson shows that the technology and complexity take the honor and soul out of battle, and that war by proxy is poison to civilization.The story is complex, multithemed but readable in a way that all Anderson novels are. Briefly, here are some of the typical Anderson themes at play.- Tragic heroism. The Ishtarian leaders that oppose each other are depicted are given rich characterization, and they both have their noble aspects. This is an important feature of Anderson's work, where the honor is usually found in what would be the biggest villian of the tale.- Distrust of remote government. The human colonists are constantly at odds with the Earth hands that feed them, especially when an overarching war bleeds their resources. A Libertarian theme that also runs though "Star Fox" and the van Rijn series.- Aliens shaped by physics. Anderson paid a lot of attention to the environmental consequences of the astronomical setup of the planets, carrying on the tradition of writers like Hal Clement. Discovery of and interaction with the alien races make up some of the best parts of this and many other Anderson books.- Characters with moral struggles. 1974 was the year the celebrated Robert Stone novel Dog Soldiers was published. That book featured Vietnam veterans returning home to deal heroin, and featured a collection of truly repulsive and amoral characters. Books like "Fire Time" and "Dog Soldiers" may represent the polar opposites of viewpoints regarding how much moral control people could be expected to have over their actions. I've read only one of Stone's books and over 20 of Anderson's. There are multipile shortcomings (the 1950's era coyness when describing the human relationships, stretches of boring narration at the beginning, internal dialogue that's overused), that keep this from being a classic. He appears to handle the stoic characters better then the emotional ones. However, this novel is worth finding and reading, and it's nice to see that Baen reprinted it some time ago.

Paxton This book is about what happens on a planet with three suns (the main sun, a dwarf sun, and a wandering sun), when the wandering sun comes too close. On this planet, called Ishtar, humans and the indigenous centauroid aliens co-exist. "Firetime" is coming, as it does at intervals, and civilization has always collapsed at these times, due in large part to the "barbarian" Ishtarians whose lands are the hardest hit when the rogue sun comes around. They leave their baked homelands and go rampaging into the more "civilized" lands elsewhere on the planet. This time around, humans are there (this is their first Firetime), and they want to stop civilization from being destroyed again.Several thought-provoking ideas come out in this book. For one thing, we are made to wonder whether the "barbarian" or the "civilized" Ishtarians are in the right. We sympathize with the "barbarian" desire to escape their unliveable homeland, but also with the "civilized" desire to keep civilization intact. This book isn't simply about one group (the good guys) fighting another group (the bad guys).It takes a bit of time to get enough into the story that you can understand what's going on. However, once you do, it's worth it.

Totally gripping By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson The planet of Ishtar orbits a Sun-like star in a system that includes three stars that orbit each other in complicated dance. And every thousand years, the third star, a red giant, passes close enough to Ishtar to throw the planet's environment into an uproar, and cause the migration of its inhabitants causing the downfall of its civilization. The new "fire time" approaches, but this time there is a difference, strangely-shaped people have come from the stars, and the Ishtarians the human's intervention will make all of the difference this time around.But, the seemingly all-powerful humans are now powerless to help their friends of the Gathering. Earth is locked in an interstellar war with another alien people, and they have forbidden the humans on Ishtar from doing anything to help their friends. Such a waste. It seems that everyone is powerless in this drama - but might the actors not abandon their script a make a difference?Poul Anderson (1926-2001) is remembered as one of the giants of the sci-fi industry, and this book shows off why. This book "works" in so many ways. As a piece of scientific fiction it is a tour de force, with a fascinating world (Ishtar and its suns), and a fascinating set of aliens (the centauroid Ishtarians and the other creatures of their world). As an anti-war morality play, the story is also a triumph, showing the waste of war, its unintended consequences, and indeed its inevitability. And, as just plain a good story, it has an interesting storyline with action and romance.I found this to be a totally gripping story. I first read it when I was young, and I never forgot the story. Now, reading it all of these years later, I still find it to be a spellbinding read. If you like great science-fiction, then get Poul Anderson's FireTime - you won't be disappointed!

About the Author John F. Mullins joined the U.S. Army in 1960 and served three tours in Vietnam with the Special Forces, initially as a medic and then as an "A" Team XO and CO, and as a SOG Operative after being commissioned in 1964. After retiring in 1981, he has worked as a "for-hire soldier," conducting security and antiterrorism operations in such hot spots as Bogota, Colombia, Beirut, and Belfast. He lives in Oklahoma.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding cap to an equally outstanding trilogy By Kevin C. Rohrer Great novel about a Vietnam from someone who was there. This story, along with the previous two in the series held my attention from beginning to end. The details were spot-on, and the pacing such that the storyline progressed without becoming boring.The ending was such that it could be the end, but could also be the start of a fourth novel, which I would really like to see.
