A girl’s dark destiny could cause the unraveling of the world in this “shattering and transcendent” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) novel from the author of A Creature of Moonlight.Heed this warning, mortal: stay far away from the three sister Fates. For if they come to love you, they might bring about the end of the world… Chloe is the youngest. Hers are the fingers that choose the wool, that shape the thread, that begin it. The sun smiles upon her. Men love her without knowing who she is. She has lived forever and will live forever more. She and her sisters have been on their isolated Greek island for longer than any mortal can remember. They spin, measure, and slice the countless golden threads of human life. They are the three Fates, and they have stayed separate for good reason: it is dangerous for them to become involved with the humans whose lives they shape. So when a beautiful girl named Aglaia shows up on their doorstep, Chloe tries to make sure her sisters don’t become attached. But in seeking to protect them, Chloe discovers the dark power of Aglaia’s destiny. As her path unwinds, the three Fates find themselves pulled inextricably along—toward mortal pain, and mortal love, and a fate that could unravel the world.

The Shadow Behind the Stars, by Rebecca Hahn

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Chloe is the youngest of the three sisters who spin the world. Her fingers choose the wool, spin the thread, and begin each life. Motherly Serena guides the thread and marks the end. Xinot, the oldest, slices each thread with a snap of her shears. When a girl appears at their door asking to understand her disastrous fate, the sisters have nothing to say. Serena casts a spell meant to ease the girl's pain before sending her away. Instead, the spell begins a series of events that will bring about the end of the world. This sophomore novel from Hahn takes readers on a strange and wondrous course through questions of fate and free will as the narrator and her sisters embark on a journey with the potential to change the very foundation of existence. Written in second person as Chloe tells her story to us mere mortals, this evocative and descriptive novel is timeless beyond the assumed ancient Greek setting. A unique voice and mythology-tinged writing give this quiet book some punch and offer a few surprising revelations for the three sisters. Hahn expertly tackles the power of belief and choice in this thoughtful and introspective work. Strong characters and intricate prose help to mitigate a plot that is often slow and narrowly focused with insights about the human condition that may seem obvious to older readers. VERDICT This unique and often literary yarn will appeal to those interested in mythology, fate, and philosophy.—Emma Carbone, Brooklyn Public Library

Review * "From the author of the radiant A Creature of Moonlight (2014), a heartbreaking fantasy tackles life's big questions.... Chloe's narrative voice is piercing and poetic, encompassing both youthful heedlessness and eternal power, rich in minute observations, delicate metaphors, restrained accountings of atrocities, and reluctant wisdom. Alongside her sisters, she comes to sing mortals "a tune of cataclysms, of breaking points, of beautiful horrors"—but the final aching chord of helpless love becomes the unexpected triumphant resolution to every impossible question. Shattering and transcendent." (Kirkus Reviews, June 2015, STARRED REVIEW)“A strange and wondrous course through questions of fate and free will . . . Hahn expertly tackles the power of belief and choice in this thoughtful and introspective work.” (School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW July 2015)“Awell-orchestrated tale of mythical beauty, painful remembrance, and fatefulconsequences…readers will soon be entranced by her ethereal prose and will befervently turning the pages to understand the mystery surrounding Aglaia’sarrival.” (VOYA)* “This lyrical, thoughtful novel . . . is well worth the measured pace; it will likely linger with philosophical readers, particularly those familiar with the mythological Fates, long after they’ve finished.” (BCCB, starred review)

About the Author Rebecca Hahn grew up in Iowa, attended college in Minnesota, and soon afterward moved to New York City, where she worked in book publishing and wrote her first novel, A Creature of Moonlight, on the side. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a young adult mythology book unlike any other mythology story I have read in the young adult world By Michelle@Book Briefs The Shadow Behind the Stars by Rebecca Hahn is a young adult mythology book unlike any other mythology story I have read in the young adult world. It read more like a traditional Greek tale. A fictionalized play of a Greek tragedy, and there was just something about that the academic and history nerd inside of me ate right up. I loved that this story was set in ancient Greece and that it had all the sorrowful tragic elements of traditional Greek myths. Of course, that meant for a more violent and slower pace of story telling, which to me equates to a more mature target audience. I think adults will love this story perhaps more than young adults. The Shadow Behind the Stars is told from the point of view of the Fates. I have not read too many books from the three fate sisters point of view, so that was really interesting to me. It was a kinder and gentler fate than I was used to from tales. They knew they had to carry out their job, but they could just not help but get swept up in poor Aglaia‘s story and destiny. I really liked the dichotomy of voices in the this story. The book is told from the point of view of one of the Fates, but on the other hand, it is also very much Aglaia‘s tale. The interplay between narrator voice and main character played out really nicely. I am very impressed with Rebecca Hahn’s writing. The Shadow Behind the Stars is not one of those books that you can gobble up in a quick afternoon. It has a slower pace and is meant to be savored. I don’t often get to read books like this because of my limited reading time, I am drawn more towards instant gratification stories, but there is something really satisfying about digging into a book that forces you to slow down and really digest each page. If you are a fan of traditional greek mythology, you should really check out The Shadow Behind the Stars. It is a beautiful (and yes a little sad) tale. I will tell you one thing, I can’t wait to read another book by Rebecca Hahn.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not compensated for my review.

For if they come to love you, they might bring about the end of the world…Chloe is the youngest. Hers are the fingers that choose the wool, that shape the thread, that begin it. But in seeking to protect them, Chloe discovers the dark power of Aglaia’s destiny. As her path unwinds, the three Fates find themselves pulled inextricably along—toward mortal pain, and mortal love, and a fate that could unravel the world. What I Liked:This book was... strange. It's one of those mystical, magical-realism-esque novels that don't seem to be going anywhere. The plot of this book didn't make sense to me, the story didn't make sense, and yet I couldn't pull myself away. I think I enjoyed the book, though I can't see myself going through it again, and I'm not sure I'd recommend it.The Three Fates - Chloe, Serena, and Xinot - do not interact with mortals, do not live among mortal, do not interfere in the lives of mortals. They spin, mark, and cut threads. Chloe is the youngest, the one who looks like a young woman, the one whom men find irresistible. Serena is the middle-aged one, and she is the mothering type, though she will never have children of her own. Xinot is the elderly sister, the oldest one, the most intuitive. When Aglaia washes up on the sisters' island, Serena can't turn her away. But Aglaia has a dark future, and the Fates are now involved. This book is told from Chloe's first-person point-of-view, although it's also told in second person, kind of. Chloe is telling "you mortals" a story, a story of why the Fates shouldn't interfere in the lives of humans. Chloe is NOT happy with Aglaia living with them. Serena is the one that allows it, and Xinot lets it be. Chloe has a strong will and is a bit more temperamental than the other two sisters. While it might seem like she doesn't care about Aglaia at first, she grows to care about her, just like the other sisters.Aglaia's village was raided by soldiers, everyone murdered, the village burned. Aglaia survived, but the raiders wanted it so. Aglaia is filled with pain, and Serena puts a spell on her to erase her memories. But it doesn't erase the pain. Aglaia has something huge that will change the world, and the Fates are powerless to stop it. They are so powerful, yet so powerless. The story is very short, yet very dense. If you skim something or flip too quickly, you might miss something vital. It is consuming, the kind of book that confuses the heck out of you, yet you can't look away. The writing is beautiful, lyrical, yet I was totally lost at times, but I couldn't not keep reading. The world is a fantasy, Greek-influenced one, but I couldn't get a firm grasp on it.While I'm giving this book three stars, I liked the book. The story is SO intriguing (and I can't say much specifically because it gets spoilery really quickly), and the ending is strange but satisfying. I think. If I'm understand it correctly. What I Did Not Like:But therein lies my problem. This book is one of those gorgeously written book that are confusing as a Rubik's Cube (hush, Rubik's Cube solvers). A lot of fantasy novels that take on a magical realism feel are like this. They are lovely and flowy and pretty to read... but confusing. As a story, this one didn't have much structure, and didn't make sense. How in the world did Aglaia end up by the Fates? Especially when we find out that the Fates are on an island which other humans live on (this isn't quite a spoiler, I promise). Why didn't she end up there? Why didn't the Fates throw her out? Why did they follow her, why did they stay? I can't say more without spoiling things, but trust me, things don't add up in this book. There is little plot structure. It's like someone is telling a tale but veers off in one direction and attempts to come back to the tale. Or something. The climax rolls around and then I'm even more confused. The ending is also confusing, but I think I get it and I think I like it? I think there is some heavy symbolism, or maybe I'm reading into it too much. In any case, I think the ending could have been more clear. The whole story, really. This book is REALLY short. There could easily have been another 100-125 pages in this book. Maybe that would have fleshed out the plot and padded the worldbuilding. One thing that kind of bothered me - it is very OBVIOUSLY stated, both in the synopsis and in the book, that Chloe is the one that men fall for. Yet, there is NO romance in this book. None. Not even for Aglaia and some guy, or anyone. But especially not for Chloe. I was expecting it, because the author had a line in the beginning stating how men fell for Chloe all the time. Hello, foreshadowing? Likely unintentional, which is annoying!Would I Recommend It:I actually don't think I would recommend this book. It's interesting, but probably not worth the read. Initially, I was REALLY excited about it! Now I'm happy I read it, but not really singing its praises. If you have it, read it. If not, keep moving along!Rating:3 stars. Not terrible, but not amazing! But hey, it was super short, which almost makes me think I should reread it... almost. I can't quite wrap my head around this one.

I fell in love with Hahn’s writing when I read her other book A Creature of Moonlight. Again her writing is so beautiful, mystical, lyrical, Hahn is just a master at words and painting a picture so distinct and unique. This story is short but very deep which I loved. Plus I am just a sucker for mythology of just about any kind. I will ALWAYS read a book with mythology all wrapped in it.Here she has spun a very unique story of the Fates. Where they are sisters yet they are not. They are bound to each other. The three Fates are three very different women who never interact with mortals. They do what they are known for: the spinning and cutting of threads to the human life. You’ve got Xinot who is the “elderly sister” or the oldest one, she is has a gift for discernment. Then we’ve got Serena who is “middle-aged” with the more mothering nature. Then we have Chloe-the youngest who is so beautiful that men want her.I really liked that this author humanized them. Instead of having the Fates old, disgusting, and creepy. We have very gentle, strong, real characters that are relatable. This story is told in the voice of Chloe-the youngest. It’s a story of a girl named Aglaia washes up in the hands of the fate sisters; and whose life has been utterly destroyed.Aglaia’s village was destroyed by soldiers who murdered and burned her village, yet left her alive-on purpose. She is filled with so much pain that one of the sisters tries to ease her memories by putting a spell on her. However Aglaia has a dark future that the Fates are powerless to stop but become involved.Overall I loved this book it was amazing just like her first and I would recommend it to anyone!Sexual Content: mildViolence: moderate (talk of the pain from a murdered and destroyed village)Drugs/Alcohol: mild/noneLanguage: mild/none

Cinderella's Stepsister and the Big Bad Wolf, by Lorraine Carey

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—In Carey's fractured fairy tale, Cinderella is mean and lazy. She goes to the grand ball as a mouse (punishment by her fairy godmother for bad manners), and it's her kindhearted stepsister, Gertie Ugly, who marries Prince Charming after they meet at the dance. Although the story omits many aspects of Disney's Cinderella, Blanco sneaks in a few familiar scenes in his digital illustrations. Children will also enjoy seeing how Blanco changes the appearances of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wicked Queen, and the evil witches: characters who try to teach Gertie how to act more like an "Ugly." It's easy to make this book interactive by asking questions about the character crossovers or by introducing children to additional versions of the stories, which in this case include the fairy tales "Hansel and Gretel," "Snow White," and "Little Red Riding Hood." VERDICT A decidedly different take on the familiar tale.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

Review This amusing fairy tale mashup reveals that one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, Gertie, was actually the kind, helpful one...Blanco’s digital illustrations set the story in what appears to be 1930s England while infusing Gertie’s quest with a gentle humor to match Carey’s narration.—Publishers Weekly

About the Author Lorraine Carey spent her early years digging for fairies in her backyard and hoping upon hope that she'd wake up on Christmas morning to find a horse behind the couch. Lorraine Carey now lives in London with her son, Kassius; their cat, Merlin; and an amazingly invincible fish named Bob.Migy Blanco was born in Salford, England, studied in London, and then spent ten years working in advertising and editorial illustration. After marrying, he moved to Buenos Aires, where he developed a children’s-book style that is bold, magical, and eye-catching. Migy Blanco recently moved back to the U.K. and, for the first time in his life, is living outside of a mega-city, enjoying nature and exploring new sources of inspiration.

Very similar to the original story of Cinderella By BrittyMama I am a huge fan of the retelling of classic fairy tales from another character's perspective so I was very excited to read this book. It looked to be a fun mashup of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe Little Red was actually one of the step-sisters? Maybe the Fairy Godmother was actually bad and the step-sister was looking out for Cinderella the whole time? Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. We are introduced to the third Ugly stepsister, Gertie, and find out that she isn't very ugly after all. In fact, she is portrayed very much like the Cinderella we all know (except Cinderella is mean here). Gertie is super sweet and pretty, does all the housework, is shunned by her family, and isn't allowed to go to the ball until at the last minute she is helped by the Fairy Godmother. Sound familiar? There were a couple of nice cameos from some other fairy tale favorites (Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) but for the most part, it was too similar to the original Cinderella story.

However, the classic tale gets turned around and mixed up with some other fairy tales in CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF. In this story, Cinderella is not very nice and she has not two, but three stepsisters. The other two everyone has heard of before, but the third stepsister is a girl named Gertie. Gertie is not like the rest of her Ugly family (their last name really is Ugly). She's sweet, nice, and kind. She wants desperately to go to the Prince's ball, but her mother won't let her unless she learns to be as wicked and mean as the rest of the family. So, Gertie is sent from one fairy tale villain to the next in an attempt to learn how to be mean. However, Gertie just can't seem to be mean and she seems to have no way to get to the ball. Help comes in an unexpected companion. CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF has several cameos from other fairy tale characters. The story isn't as in-depth as other mashups and some readers might not like that. However, it's cute and has a certain charm and most children will probably enjoy reading it (or having it read to them).

To Have and To Hold, by Mary Johnston

About the Author Born in 1870 to prominent West Virginia family, Mary Johnston was well known as an American novelist of great talent. She was the daughter of Major John William Johnston, an officer who served with Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War. His stories became the impetus for some of her later historical novels. Although her writings at times reflected more of a fatalistic, rather than distinctively Christian worldview, her books provided readers with rich historical insights into early American history. The author of several historical novels, her most famous title was the epic story "To Have and to Hold", which attained great popularity in 1907 during its release for the celebration of the three hundredth birthday of the Jamestown settlement.

Adventure, romance, rich characters, and wry humor carry you into the forests of early colonial America, embroidered with the tragedies and intricacies of colonial/Native American relationships. The plot, at first blush simple and time-honored, is only the framework for a study in human character: the best of it, the worst of it, those in whom the base and noble are inextricably entwined. Jocelyn, the King's ward, escapes England in a bride-ship bound for the colonies and for her own reasons marries a planter who has decided--on a throw of dice--to come to Jamestown for the arrival of the brides. Their uncertain path is complicated by the arrival of the powerful suitor Jocelyn hoped to escape, by kidnapping, intrigue, arrest, shipwreck, and pirates, and the unravelling of the colony's delicate peace with the first Americans. I was captivated, not from the first page, but from the table of contents: Chapter Two "In Which I Marry in Haste," and Chapter Three "In Which I Am Like to Repent at Leisure". Read it at your leisure--you will have no reason to repent.

It starts out slowly but gets really good, really fast. It has Indians, pirates, swordfights, one of the best (worst) villains ever (& his evil cohort), betrayal, sacrifice, true love and ventriloquism. We LOVED the story then and, as adults, came to appreciate it on new levels. Same goes for my son, now grown up, to whom I gave the same privilege of great story-telling as a kid. There's a 1947(?) movie based on the book but the book itself, of course, can tell more of the story with the very best illustrations - those from your own imagination.

Suspending belief just a bit too much By Bomojaz Set in the early 1600s in Virginia, hero Ralph Percy marries Jocelyn Leigh on sight (she arrives at Jamestown on a boat full of women from England, there for the purpose of finding a husband; she is escaping a despicable suitor, Lord Carnal). At first she despises Percy, but after many adventures (some among the Indians), sword fights, pirating, and the eventual death of Carnal, who had come to America to pursue Jocelyn, true love wins out. Johnston is good at forwarding the action throughout the story, but some of the incidents are pretty far-fetched. They ate this stuff up back in 1900 when it was first published: it's one of the most popular historical novels ever published in America.

No Borders-No Boundaries is a compelling thought provoking tale of mystery, intrigue and romance. A cast of no nonsense characters, jump from the page with sparkling dialogues that compel you to feel for their predicaments. The action takes place over a three-month period during the summer of 2001. From the cruel streets of Washington D.C to the peaceful shores of the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, this action packed page-turner will have you hooked from the start. Amidst all the mayhem, there are real people and their turbulent lives that are altered and changed forever. The story thrives on deception and deceit and for some deliverance. There are new beginnings and sudden endings. The novel encompasses the shadowy lives of underworld crime figures and the innocent victims who are dragged unwillingly along with them. There are the hunters and the hunted whose roles explicitly become reversed. It is a story of life, love and death that all happen, ‘out of the blue’.

So Lloyd Jenkins flees to Canada, to a cabin belonging to his cousin, not sure what awaits or where his life will go next. There he meets a cast of characters to make any writer jealous!! Fred who is only Fred part of the time and his brother Joey.He finds new friends, loses some old friends and finds the woman of his dreams. But always, in the back of his mind, he wonders about the people looking for him. Will they find him? Will he live to tell his story? When you are dealing with the underworld there is nothing you can count on. It becomes life changing for him that he finds a wonderful woman to help him sort it out and make some hard decisions in this summer of 2001. There are many twists and turns to his story, suffice it to say it will keep you in suspense, it is one of those books that you will not be able to put down until the end which holds a startling surprise of its own. Although the writer and I share a last name we are not related, I am just one of his many fans.

The characters were realistic and interesting. I loved that the chosen setting in the Gaspe Peninsula in Eastern Quebec was so descriptive in that you felt that you were there or at the very least knew this area well. I found this book very entertaining from the first page to the last. I am looking forward to Robert C. Brewster's next novel.

Kashmir, by Francis Younghusband

About the Author Sir Francis Younghusband is universally known for his forcible entry into Lhasa in 1902. But his adventures commenced much earlier. After mountaineering in Manchuria, he began in 1887 his exciting journey through the heart of Asia, across the Gobi Desert and Chinese Turkestan to Kashgar and Yarkand, and then across the Himalayas to Srinagar. He was sent by the British to investigate Hunza raids on Kirghiz territory; he went on his famous expedition to the Pamirs, only to be summarily ordered out by the Russians; and in 1898 he was appointed political agent in the disturbed Chitral (in present-day Pakistan).

Great read to get to know the Raj Era of early twentieth century in Indian subcontinent By Punit Mehta A good read combining elements of Raj Era from a British officer's perspective (who went on playing a bigger role later on in Tibet which is another story altogether), the beautiful vale of Kashmir, appreciation of wild life (though there are tales about hunting excursions); cultural intricacies of the region etc.

The lovely paintings don't apear in the Kindle version, so I bought the paperback version as well. It was worth it.

The only confusion that was created by advertising two books by the same author on Kashmir with same year of publishing with two different prices. There was just one photo of the cover of the book given for both these books in the advertisement. But the book I got had a totally different cover than advertised. It does not look like the original binding and is an abandoned copy from some library in Spokane. I had expected a book with the cover shown on the photo in the advertisement and I got some thing else.I haven't sent it back because I just don't want any arguments. That is all I have to say. If I will be buying any more stuff from Amazon, I will have to think about it seriously first.

The book is a unique insight into life in the western Algarve. In the course of writing articles for a community magazine, Lena Strang has been privileged to speak to local people from all walks of life – from fishermen, farmers and market stallholders to artists, musicians and athletes to name but a few. She has been able to talk to people who have lived there all their lives and others who have made it their home. The rich history of the region fascinates her. She has been able to piece together the intriguing stories behind abandoned houses and researched places of interest. Time spent talking to elderly residents with their recollections of times past she has found particularly rewarding. For this book, Lena has adapted articles she has written over a period of some years and is sure that there are still many untold stories out there to be told.

  • The Man Who Would Be King" (1888) is a novella by Rudyard Kipling. It is about two British adventurers in British India who become kings of Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan. The story was inspired by the exploits of James Brooke, an Englishman who became the first White Rajah of Sarawak in Borneo; and by the travels of American adventurer Josiah Harlan, who was granted the title Prince of Ghor in perpetuity for himself and his descendants. It incorporates a number of other factual elements such as locating the story in eastern Afghanistan's Kafiristan and the European-like appearance of many of Kafiristan's Nuristani people, and an ending modelled on the return of the head of the explorer Adolf Schlagintweit to colonial administrators. The story was first published in The Phantom Rickshaw and other Eerie Tales (Volume Five of the Indian Railway Library, published by A. H. Wheeler & Co of Allahabad in 1888). It also appeared in Wee Willie Winkie and Other Child Stories in 1895, and in numerous later editions of that collection. A radio adaption was broadcast on the show Escape on 7 July 1947 and again on 1 August 1948. In 1975, it was adapted by director John Huston into a feature film of the same name, starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine as the adventurers and Christopher Plummer as Kipling. As early as 1954, Humphrey Bogart expressed the desire to star in The Man Who Would Be King and was in talks with director John Huston.

Review "An excellent collection with particularly thorough notes."--Professor M. Mackey, Ph.D., California State University, Sacramento

"A lovely little book."--James Dahl, West Georgia College

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

One of Kipling's better short stories By TS This is a story about two con men in British Imperial India who cook up a scheme to make themselves kings in Afghanistan. One of Kipling's better short stories, it was admired by writers as disparate as J.M. Barrie and H.G. Wells. It suffers a little from having had a zillion imitators in the intervening century or so, and like a lot of Kipling's works, there's an undertone of paternalistic imperialism that modern readers may find grating, but it isn't like he's showing the British in a positive light either -- this is Kipling at his best, and at his best he was too good a writer to let anyone, including the British, off the hook.Read this if you're trying to figure out whether or not you like Kipling's works that are aimed for adults -- it's very different in tone from, say, The Jungle Book or _Just So Stories_, which were written for children. If you like this, I recommend you grab Plain Tales from the Hills, his first collection of stories set in British India; it should also be available online for free.If you're interested in the historical background for this story, it was at least partially inspired by a real individual, an American named Josiah Harlan.

If you haven't read this story but have only seen the movie, you are missing out. True, you can't see Sean Connery but you easily get the flavor of the period. And it is free! This is a great short story to read on your Kindle Iphone app.

By Knut Oyangen The story of the man who would be king describes the journey of two half-mad yet determined Englishmen from obscurity in India to divine rule in far-off Kafiristan. The two men smuggle themselves into Afghanistan posing as a mad priest and his servant, steal some mules when their camels can go no further, trek over the vast mountains, and set themselves up as kings by demonstrating the power of the rifle to spear-brandishing natives (in the most murderous way, one might add). They later establish their status as gods by introducing Masonic mystery and orders to the mountain villages. Eventually, however, their humanity is exposed, thus wrecking the dream of empire. The story itself is witty and exciting, driven by the raw prose and longing for exotic adventure characteristic of Kipling. At the same time, this short tale is remarkable as a summary of imperialism and its problems. The questionable motives and courses of actions of the imperialists are exposed, yet at the same time they are shown to reflect human nature more than ideology or political purpose. The ease with which a small number of people with superior technology can subjugate much larger numbers is also demonstrated in a non-sentimental fashion (it is certainly not a politically correct story by present standards). Finally, the ending emphasizes the impossibility of maintaining authority in the long run under such circumstances - technological knowledge must be revealed to maintain order, responsibility must be shared with intermediaries, and propaganda will eventually be appropriated for subversive purposes. If only historians could be as brief and straightforward as Kipling in recognizing these simple facts about how imperialism came about and how it was doomed to failure.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ~~'Hugs are needed...'~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! Sophie is planning her birthday party and will be two years old soon. She lives in Bluebell Wood and has a lot of friends including squirrels, mice, badgers, moles and some starlings. Skipping along to deliver the invitations to her birthday, suddenly she is filled with sadness when she realizes she has never had a hug. Some of her friends try to explain the reason they can't hug her. She does realize that due to her 'prickly' skin that she could hurt someone if they got too close.Sophie gets the best birthday present from the animals in the forest. A really nice ending for an upset hedgehog. The message is clear in this short book written for ages 4 - 8... 'hugs are needed to feel close' to another. The drawings are in black and white and are well done.Highly recommended.

Legendary driver, Artimus DeVine, has received an assignment of a lifetime, and it stinks. He must traverse a dangerous mountain highway, face his past, and hunt down domestic terrorists threatening his way of life. He has 18 hours and zero second chances... It seemed a simple mistake. One Winnebago snuck through a mountain road, tourists headed for Vegas. But on this mountain road, nothing is what it seems. The cop who stops them isn't your typical cop. The route they chose, isn't your typical route. And the storm they're driving into, isn't your usual storm.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book grabbed me right away and kept me on ... By Kathryn L. Angello This book grabbed me right away and kept me on the edge of my seat. My dark, creepy, terrifying seat. The characters are so well developed you can picture every one. The character I was rooting for changed every 3 pages. As soon as I can sleep again, I will probably re-read it!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend! By Louella I read a lot, but do not write many reviews; it takes a special book for that! This novel has more twists and turns than the Money Run itself. A gripping read that sucks you in and leaves you wanting more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Like driving with a maniac -- exciting, eye-widening, and heart-racing! By Spoons I'm not much of a critic (of either literature or film), but I just finished this, and needed to jot down a review. This story is full of characters that I certainly hope are entirely fictional. Mostly unsavory folks, but most have some glimmer of redeemability in them -- but The Run is not the place to extract that sliver of goodness. There are wry bits of humor in every chapter, dark though they may be. And I found myself feeling sympathetic for various characters at different times, before learning a piece of their story that changed my mind. Or I found myself really detesting one until they pulled some trick that I just wasn't expecting. I know this is normal for fiction, but in this book, it's so easy to wrinkle your nose at a player, and it surprises you to find that your sympathies have changed.I like that this is written in very short chapters -- it made it very digestible, and helped me keep track of the many intertwining stories that make up this motley crew. By the time I got to the last 80 pages or so, I couldn't make myself close the book. Please forgive my crude review, but don't let that dissuade you from hopping into the passenger seat and taking a ride on The Money Run. Buckle up, though -- it's full of sudden turns, jolts and swerves.I'm ready for the next journey, Artimus!!!!

The book is lacking in so many areas: the illustrations are amateur, the layout is sloppy (there's little regard for how the comic sans font plays against the background) and the punctuation is a nightmare. But worst of all, both the English and Dutch texts are rife with errors and awkward constructions. Do not waste your money like we did.
