(Lynn the Kazak) As a member of the deadly Kazak Guardians Lynn's life is now filled to the brim with adventure and mayhem. Lynn outwits and out shoots everyone who tries to kill her assigned clients. One of the best books I have read in a long time. The first book of this series was great and this is a worthy addition.

This book seemed like a collection of short stories pieced together. While the writing was good and fluid, and very enjoyable to read in each chapetr, I had a tough time making coherent sense out of the book. Or did I miss the book before it that explained everything? At first, I thought it was a book about good body-guards fending off psychic assassins, and I expected a bit deeper explanation of the assassins and their skills. Concepts like a psionic mind control assassin who manage to convince people into believing black is white are brought up, used, and discarded in about three paragraphs. Ditto with assassins that can shape-shift. Ditto for assassins who can...I mean, really - there is the totally unanswered question about where these assassin recruiting centers are, how they work, etc. The author spends a reasonable amount of time going through the training of the protector types - assassins are just as interesting. Heck, the protectors even have an assassin ranking - i.e. how many they have killed. So doesn't that imply some sort of secret war between two groups? And there is nothing in there - not even a hint - on how society caused a group of bodyguards with an unlimited license to kill and above any law except their own internal review ever came to happen. The whole point about describing a really weird society is to at least give some hints how it happened...And what's the point of spending so much time describing the vacations? Maybe just interconnecting words between chapters? I dunno...I'm gonna try to read the first book and see if makes any sense.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding! By Shana Pare This is a worthy sequel in the Karzak series. I really like the way Daems uses a vignette style of writing because it is not burdensome and allows for the delivery of a lot of information and back story. I like the character development and the thread of humor which has been consistent. I look forward to the next book ... if there is one.

The shivering cold of winter. The fresh, new signs of spring. The toe-wiggling freedom of summer. The leaf-dropping days of fall. Each season is celebrated for many different reasons, but one never fails to roll right into the next. Jane Yolen's lilting verses and Lisel Jane Ashlock's sensitive portraits convey the cyclical nature of the seasons in this poetic tribute to the characteristics of the four periods of the year.

Sing a Season Song, by Jane Yolen

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—The prolific Yolen has written a paean to the eternal cycle of the seasons, beginning with winter and ending as fall fades into that season once again. The poetry evokes some interesting images: "Water, waves,/shimmering days./Toes wiggle,/fish wriggle/in a strange haze." And again: "Pumpkins and gourds/and the clamor/ of herds./Honking geese Vs.,/And the bare-bones of trees." However, it is Ashlock's pencil and watercolor illustrations that are the standout here. The artist focuses her attention largely on the animal world with sometimes startlingly realistic depictions of snowy owls, foxes, otters, weasels, snowshoe hares, deer, and many more. The animals peek out from hollow tree trunks and through blades of grass, and it is often necessary to spend some enjoyable time studying the pages to make sure you haven't missed that hedgehog or opossum hanging by its tail. Often the animals (particularly that magnificent snowy owl) appear to be making direct eye contact with readers. People are seen in the background, engaging in appropriate seasonal activities, as if unaware that their forest friends are so close by. VERDICT While seasonal books abound, this one is distinctive enough to be a first purchase for most collections.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

Review "A bookish experience of the seasons that is like no other." - Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews"While seasonal books abound, this one is distinctive enough to be a first purchase for most collections." - School Library Journal"This lovely book introduces young readers to the poetry of words, art, and nature." - Kirkus"In succinct, evocative poems, Yolen describes the seasons as they unfold in a forest habitat." - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

About the Author Jane Yolen has been called "the Hans Christian Andersen of America" because of her significant contributions to children's literature. She has written more than 300 books for readers of all ages, with a list of publications that includes the Caldecott Medal–winning Owl Moon.Lisel Jane Ashlock celebrates the beauty of the natural world in every project she undertakes. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pleasantly surprised By Leebo's Wife I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I usually don't read this kind of book, but I actually enjoyed it. For a SciFi book, there was fantasy, action, and comedy. The only problem I found, was numerous typos and grammatical errors. Otherwise, a good read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My son loved it!! By Donna Flynn I received this book for free through a giveaway on Goodreads. I thought my son would love it and he did. His review is below:It was a great book. I liked how the ships fought. I didn't like the captain, though. He was mean to the crew. My favorite character was Draca because she is a good fighter. I really want to read more of this series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun Read By Olaf Lutherson I truly enjoyed the story. Needs heavy editing work on the grammatical side though. Verb tense and typos were common (only reason I didn't give it a 5star rating). Hopefully, the author will have this fixed shortly. I look forward to the next installment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very cool popups By BrittyMama Illustrations: I gotta say, this book had some serious paper engineering behind it. In terms of format, it is very cool. Featuring 6 different Halloween scenes with pop-ups, they are both large and move as you open and shut the book. That being said, you have to be careful as you turn each page so as to not bend the large popups. This is more appropriate for a child who is able to be a bit more gentle with books (or a watchful adult reader)Summary: Told in a cute rhythmic poem, Mouse explores a haunted house and we are taken room by room to see what lies ahead- from witches to potions and broomsticks to skeletons, there are all the classic Halloweeny characters without being too scary.5 stars for the popups alone. The story was just an added bonus!

An excellent supplement for would-be travelers By Midwest Book Review Back To Europe With A Busy Body is more of an armchair traveler's extravaganza come alive than a practical travel guide. There are no maps, or listings of restaurants and hotels - instead, Back To Europe With A Busy Body gives the author's humorous perspective upon great people, locations steeped in tradition, historical trivia, and much more from France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Holland to Poland, Greece, and more. The colorful lives of historic figures from the 1800's to 4000 B.C. are tongue-in-cheek summarized, as are notable events and key instances of historic gestalt. Back To Europe With A Busy Body is an excellent supplement for would-be travelers in Europe curious about where they should travel and what they should see, and a most relaxing and engaging read for everyone else who would experience a slice of insight into Europe's rich history and noteworthy figures without the cost of physical travel.

Here is a bear who has nowhere to go,so he's plodding along through the cold winter snow.

In the icy-cold heart of winter, a little snowy bear wanders through the snow and searches for a home. But where can he go? Each warm place has been claimed, and there is no room for a bear, no matter how little. Suddenly he sees a flickering of light, orange and bright against the snowy ground. It's a house!

As Snowy Bear pushes open the creaking door, he feels warmth spread over him. There's a girl by the window, who's also looking for a friend, and, somehow, deep down, Snowy Bear knows that he is home.

Snowy Bear, by Tony Mitton

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—A furry little white bear, reminiscent of Peter in Ezra Jack Keats's The Snowy Day is outside on a cold winter day. "Here is a bear who has nowhere to go, so he's plodding along through the cold winter snow. Behind him his prints trace a long, weary line, but ahead the snow's waiting, unbroken and fine." He searches high and low for a warm, cozy place to sleep, but has no luck. At last he comes upon a small farmhouse, and finds a roaring fire and a lonely little girl who is happy to have the company. They play games, read stories and "snuggle down for a midwinter nap." The artwork, created with acrylic paint and colored pencil, is charming but the story is ever so slight. VERDICT There are far better books about winter, snowy days, and bears.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

Review

“An unapologetically sweet book that will engage both little and big hearts alike.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The artwork, created with acrylic paint and colored pencil, is charming.” ―School Library Journal

“Brown's soft, full-spread artwork nicely matches Prasadam-Halls's brief rhyming verse… This gentle, reassuring story is a calming tale just right for family or group sharing.” ―School Library Journal on I LOVE YOU NIGHT AND DAY

“The gender-neutral, cross-species portrait of affection gives the book the potential for broad appeal-the animals' relationship could easily be between a single or adoptive parent and his or her child, or also between two close friends.” ―Publishers Weekly on I LOVE YOU NIGHT AND DAY

It is, indeed, very fast paced and if you have not been keeping up with the series, then you will be a bit confused. I will say that I am thrilled to have many questions answered in this book and to actually be able to understand some of the characters part in the series. Fort Morgan is well written, full of suspense, some moments of grave sadness, and better moments of hope and redemption. I highly recommend that you get the first book and start catching up....this book is fabulous, as the whole series has been. Kudos to Claudia Hall Christian for another winner! I loved it!

Complete with many illustrations (woodcuts?), the book is a very detailed account of Palestine as it was then. The author was the archaeologist of the American Palestine Exploration Society, traveled in the region for several years, and wrote several well-known books on the subject.

O Pioneers!, by Willa Cather

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—This work, written in 1913, was the first in Cather's "Great Plains" trilogy, and it was followed by The Song of the Lark and My Antonia. Strong-willed, intelligent Alexandra Bergson is the daughter of Swedish immigrants. She inherits her father's farmland instead of it being left to her brothers, Emil, Oscar, and Lou, because she has the vision and foresight to try new crops, buy additional lands, and take risks in order to reap future rewards. Cather's poetic and lyrical writing captures the Nebraska prairie and rolling hills. Using a variety of voices and capturing the dialects of the various immigrants who inhabit the novel, reader Betsy Bronson is impeccable. Her melodic voice imbues Cather's words with the sentiments of love, envy, jealousy, and peace that drive the story. This recording is delightful and leaves one with the understanding and appreciation that the land is always there for those who take time to truly see and appreciate it.—Patricia Ann Owens, formerly with Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

Review The land belongs to the future... that's the way it seems to me....I might as well try to will the sunset over there to my brother's children. We come and go, but the land is always here. And the people who love it and understand it are the people who own it -- for a little while."O Pioneers! (1913) was Willa Cather's first great novel, and to many it remains her unchallenged masterpiece. No other work of fiction so faithfully conveys both the sharp physical realities and the mythic sweep of the transformation of the American frontier -- and the transformation of the people who settled it. Cather's heroine is Alexandra Bergson, who arrives on the wind-blasted prairie of Hanover, Nebraska, as a girl and grows up to make it a prosperous farm. But this archetypal success story is darkened by loss, and Alexandra's devotion to the land may come at the cost of love itself. At once a sophisticated pastoral and a prototype for later feminist novels, O Pioneers! is a work in which triumph is inextricably enmeshed with tragedy, a story of people who do not claim a land so much as they submit to it and, in the process, become greater than they were.

From the Inside Flap CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book

"This beautifully produced book is a joy to read and demonstrates the real pleasures to be derived from meticulous attention to detail and the highest standards of scholarship."—American Literary Scholarship.

"The first of the Cather Scholarly Editions sets a high standard of quality. . . . Text and context reveal the splendor of O Pioneers! and enrich both the experience and study of Cather’s extraordinary prose."—Western American Literature.

Willa Cather said that O Pioneers! was her first authentic novel, "the first time I walked off on my own feet—everything before was half real and half an imitation of writers whom I admired." Cather’s novel of life on the Nebraska frontier established her reputation as a writer of great note and marked a significant turning point in her artistic development. No longer would she let literary convention guide the form of her writing; the materials themselves would dictate the structure.

The paperback edition contains all the text and scholarly apparatus found in the original Willa Cather Scholarly Edition. Edited according to standards set by the Committee for Scholarly Editions of the Modern Language Association, this volume presents the full range of biographical, historical, and textual information on the novel.

Together with My Antonia it is the novel for which she is best known. Years after writing the book, Cather wrote of it " Since I wrote this book for myself, I ignored all the situations and accents that were then thought to be necessary."The book takes place on the plains of Nebraska in the late 19th Century as the Prairie is settled be Swedish, Bohemian, and French immigrants trying to eke out a living from what appears to be a harsh, inhospitable land. The heroine of the book is Alexandra Bergson who inherits her father's farm as a young woman, raises his three sons and stays with the farm through the harsh times to become a successful landowner and farmer. The books speaks of being wedded to the land and to place. In this sense it is an instance of the American dream of a home. It also speaks of a strong woman, not in cliched, late 20th Century terms but with a sense of ambiguity, difficulty and loss. This is a story as well of thwarted love, of the difficult nature of sexualtiy, and of human passion. There is also the beginning of what in Cather's works will become an increased sense of religion, Catholicism in particular, as a haven and a solace for the sorrow she finds at the heart of human endeavor. Above all it is a picuure of stark life in the midwest. There is almost as much blood-letting in this short book as in an Elizabethan tragedy. Cather's picture of American life on the plains, even in her earliest books, is not an easy or simple one. Some readers may quarrel with the seemingly happy ending of the book. I don't think any will deny that Alexandra's happiness is dearly bought or that it is bittersweet.I tendend to shy away from this book in favor of Cather's later novels. I feared that it would be conventional and trite. The stereotyping was mine, however. This is a thoughtful, well written story of immigrant life on the plains and of the sorrow pain, and strength of the American experience.

The writing and the story are so wholey lovely, without pomp or ceremony. An immigrant father bequeaths his land to the care of his daughter on his deathbed, rather than to his sons, because he sees that her love of the land and her family runs deep and that she has the heart and spirit necessary to survive the harsh reality of the plains. So begins one of the greatest love stories of all time. I don't use the term love story loosely; this book contains love in its many intricate, shifting, and enduring forms: the love of the land, the love of a dream, love within families, love of the past, love of tradition, love of new opportunities, love between friends, the love between men and women, and the love of living. This book gets deep under your fingernails, like the very earth that it celebrates. And though, many of the events recounted are sad, it is the kind of sadness that is rich in hope

Mazza In "O Pioneers!", her classic novel first published in 1913, Willa Cather wrote, "The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman." By revealing to us the hearts of those pioneer immigrants in this book, Cather offers a moving meditation on United States culture and history."O Pioneers!" tells the story of a community in Nebraska farm country. Her main character, Alexandra Bergson, is a Swedish immigrant. Cather creates a marvelous portrait of the community and its rich mix of European ethnic groups: Norwegian, Swedish, French, etc. It is especially fascinating to see the multicultural, multiethnic world they created in the United States. Cather also depicts the cultural and linguistic "shift" that takes place along generational lines.Cather's story deals with issues of economics, gender roles, and sexuality. In addition to the formidable Alexandra, she creates a cast of compelling characters. And her luminous prose style evokes all of the sensations of Alexandra's world: the smell of ripe wheat, the chirping of insects in the long grass, the golden play of light in an apple orchard. But this is Alexandra's book. She is a great American heroine who reminds me of such beloved characters as Zora Neale Hurston's Janie (from "Their Eyes Were Watching God") or Alice Walker's Celie (from "The Color Purple"). Like those great characters, Alexandra will break your heart, deeply touch your soul, and ultimately leave you feeling richer for having known her. Finally, as an interesting companion text to "O Pioneers!" try "Anna Christie," the 1922 play by U.S. writer Eugene O'Neill. O'Neill's life and career were contemporary with Cather's, and "Anna Christie," like "O Pioneers!", deals with a Swedish immigrant woman in the United States.

I live in the USVI and am in the BVI almost every week for 25 years. I am sad that the author has written such a partisan book and excluded many places that visitors to the island might enjoy and find useful.

In fact, some people come for years, or come and never leave at all. There's a lot here, and this book can help you get your hands around it in glorious detail. As far a travel guides go, this one has it all. Exhaustive geographic coverage, up-to-date listings, diverse attractions, pragmatic information, thematic itineraries... there's just so much good stuff here, from history to hedonism. For me, a really nice touch to this guide is that it is sensitive to the traveler who is really looking to get off the beaten track. There are many suggestions that will add authenticity to your trip. This is not just another Caribbean island group, no Sir! These islands are different. Trust this comprehensive guide to lead you in whatever direction you choose, be that into the middle of it all, or on the edge of it all.

Our Careers in the Magic Kingdom

R.J. painted Animatronic figures and "plussed" attractions. Suzanne drove monorails, marched in parades, and entertained as Sleepy the dwarf. Together, the Ogrens brought their unique skills to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom during its formative years. This is their story.

R.J. and Suzanne were indeed "together in the dream": their adventures as husband-and-wife cast members spanned the backstage areas of iconic attractions, Main Street parades, and Disney executive offices. They worked with celebrities, Disney artists like Marc and Alice Davis, and the fun-loving, creative geniuses who called the "Animation Art Studio" home.

Among the stories the Ogrens tell:

  • Working underwater at the old 20,000 Leagues attraction, aboard the pirate ship in Pirates of the Caribbean, and in the "jungle" of the Jungle Cruise
  • How Disney trains its monorail drivers, and the surprisingly rigorous tests they must pass to qualify
  • Life in the "Dwarf unit", the tight-knit group of cast members who perform as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the Magic Kingdom
  • Why some Animatronic characters don't wear pants
  • Repairing bullet holes in the Haunted Mansion, replacing Dopey's stolen head, and other examples of Disney guests gone wild

Berg This story, told in alternating chapters by each of the authors, tells of the couple’s years of employment at Walt Disney World. They tell of their experiences in being hired, and opportunities while working there. These two were high school sweethearts who married and are still together, nearly 50 years later. Both are creative people. The story is both pleasurable and easy to read. The book contains many photographs throughout. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I am sure anyone who is interested in Walt Disney World would. I would recommend it to most people.

An enjoyable trip to Disneyworld By Dennis A bright and breezy account by a husband and wife team (alternate chapters) of their life working in front of the crowds and behind the scenes at Disney world. While other Books on the world Disney may present facts, statistics, and anecdotes of behind the scenes life at the Park, this book has an added dimension. It has love. Forget the oft repeated stating of the most magical place on earth. That sounds like a manufactured saying, and a Disney enforced attitude. It goes well beyond just a saying here. You can tell these authors loved their Disney life. It shows in every chapter. Their love of the Disney life is so infectious, you’ll end up loving it too. What a world it would be if everyone enjoyed their careers as these two.

By Pam Turlow Reading this wonderful book is like sitting down with these two lovely people over a cup of tea, as their stories about their lives at Disney - and their lives as a couple - fill the room in a charming, intimate fashion. This is living Disney history. The Ogrens are expert storytellers, whose tales of early Disney World are full of wonder and love - and occasionally jaw-dropping wackiness! I won't ruin it for you, but you'll never ride the Haunted Mansion the same way again!! If you're a Disneyphile, you simply must get this book!

A ruthless Argentine mobster now has world powers unfriendly to America eager to pay exorbitant sums for this technology of terror. Shadow Cell (The Wade Hanna Series) (Volume 4), by Joseph D'Antoni

About the Author Award winning author, Joseph D’Antoni is also a true practicing forensic and economic expert having spent many years testifying in court cases throughout the world. His clients have included the FBI, Department of Justice and various Intelligence Agencies as well as some of the largest law firms in this country. He holds an undergraduate, masters and doctorate degree and has taught at three major universities. Performing technical analysis and writing legal reports were a regular part of his daily work for many years before exploring popular fiction writing. Inspired by actual case histories he successfully straddles two very different worlds of the courtroom and the suspenseful, fictional world of covert intelligence operatives. D’Antoni was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and is now living in Southern California. His fictional writing started late in his forty plus year career as a forensic expert. His first book, Silent Sanction is about a main character Wade Hanna, who grew up in a difficult home environment in the depths of a Louisiana swamp to eventually become a covert intelligence agent. The author recently received the acclaimed Irwin Award for the Best Literary Series of 2015. Currently, his writing supplements an active career as a forensic economic expert. The beauty of having been in the forensic field for such a long time is he won’t run out of interesting stories for new novels anytime soon. In addition to being a writer in the spotlight he is also a highly acclaimed fine art photographer and artist. His acclaimed photography book, Louisiana Reflections is a beautiful example of his artistic accomplishments.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ‘Megan had confidence in her ability to access confidential files at the Pentagon – perhaps overconfidence’ By Grady Harp California author Joseph D'Antoni understands crime in all its manifestations and his penetrating knowledge gained as a forensic and economic expert testifying in court cases throughout the world attests. Clients such as the FBI, Department of Justice, intelligence agencies and major law firms add to his exposure for material e is so successfully translating into his novels. As is bio states, `his fictional characters are often inspired from actual cases he has worked on and events he has investigated.' He is also a fine photographer and his works have been successfully published as well as shown widely. This book SHADOW CELL is subtitled WADE HANNA SERIES BOOK 4 - the Book 1 of the series is his successful SILENT SANCTION where he introduced his character Wade Hanna.Writing a series of books around a strong character always presents the risk of placing the reader in the position of `catching up' to the drift of the book by reading the previous volumes. In Joseph's case he very wisely provides enough information in his opening chapter to give the reader a solid image of the hero who stands at the center of the stories. ` Wade Hanna had no reason to remain in Washington, D.C. after being jolted by the surprise disappearance of his lover and former handler, Megan Winslow. As an ordinary citizen, he would have stayed to file a missing person’s report with the local police. But the disappearance of a fellow undercover operative in the same covert intelligence agency couldn’t be handled in that manner. Instead, Wade booked the first flight back home to Alabama. Sitting in the back seat of the airport cab, Wade reflected on the jumble of facts contributing to Megan’s disappearance. Nothing seemed to fit. The more he thought about Megan, the more grief and anger he felt. Staring in silence at the stream of blurry lights along the Beltway Wade tried to keep his mind clear but his focus wouldn’t hold. The unsettling facts he had learned a few hours ago continued to interrupt his concentration. His stomach tightened with each jolt of the taxi as it twisted and turned through traffic trying to make his departure gate on time. After finding that Megan’s condo had been sold, Wade was convinced that she was no longer in the D.C. area and wondered if she were even still alive. Everything seemed to point to an Agency involvement or worse, an off-line mission of the Agency’s secret command. Because of her investigation into Agency activities, she had become a target. Wade’s discovery of the secret covert group operating within U.S. Military Intelligence had occurred months earlier when he interrogated one of the group’s death squad leaders. Given the lethal methods they employed, it would not be surprising if Megan was no longer living. He wasn’t ready to conclude that quite yet, but struggled emotionally to prepare himself for the gruesome outcome.'As always Joseph provides enough information in the synopsis to pull the reader in: `The disappearance of former handler and lover Megan Winslow strikes hard at Wade Hanna’s soul. He tenaciously digs into covert operations and learns that Megan is in mortal danger. The secret laboratory she has penetrated is conducting experiments on orphans to revive a Nazi effort to modify cell structure and turn innocent children into weaponized biological agents. Megan is the only one standing between the horrific experiments and the children’s freedom. If she is discovered, torture and death will follow. Facing overwhelming odds, Wade has little time to rescue her and save the children.'Once you begin reading Joseph D'Antoni's series, you find watching for the next episode a daily pastime. He is a terrific writer who has created unforgettable characters - superb action writing! Grady Harp, November 15

By Kindle Customer This was an interesting story which takes place around the Vietnam time or just after. Wade who has been deep undercover for the US is back and his handler & girl friend, Megan is gone. Not only gone but her condo has been sold and not by her. He stat\rts to to formulate a plan to find her if she is still alive. He talks to a doctor who is working on children being adopted from Argentina who become ill and they all came from the same orphanage. The story progresses and stays right on story line through the whole book. Be sure to read and see what you think. .
