Kings, queens, witches and warriors, Renegades, mystics, wise men and fools, All play their part in A DANCE CALLED AFRICA When the ancient powers of Africa meet the thrusting forces of change, will will be the outcome? When he is threatened by a group of thugs, a 10-year-old boy appeals to his ancestors for help. The response is immediate - and terrifying. Some years later, after publicly defying the powerful father who had sent his family into exile, again the heavens respond. Coincidence, natural phenomona -or something else? One person, however, shows no fear, either of the storm or its apparent instigator. LANGANI, the 4-year-old who loves to dance, meets the rebellious youth, SHAKA KA SENZANGAKHONA. During the trial of a notorious witch, they meet again. By now, Shaka is a powerful warrior King, creator of the Zulu kingdom, while Langani is of high intellect, a mystical prophet, and a man of peace. The sinister world of the occult is always close. Both Shaka and Langani oppose it, although they sometimes use it for their own ends. The diviner begins to be haunted by dreams of the white men who are scheming to enter the Kingdom in search of its ivory, and greatly fears what will follow in their wake. HENRY FRANCIS FYNN:young hunter and intrepid explorer, he is also known as 'the man who can raise the dead.' JAMES KING and FRANCIS FAREWELL: ex-naval officers whose bitter rivalry will threaten to bring destruction on those around them. JAKOT MSIMBITHI: the handsome Xhosa with the 'magical eye' and the luck of the devil. Cattle rustler, spy, and freedom fighter-even the prison on Robben island cannot hold him. But there is something else Langani cannot explain -his electrifying visions of the young boy with red hair and blue eyes who is also destined to play a part in the dangerous game about to unfold in Zululand. Who is he? And just what is his powerful connection to King Shaka?

A Dance called Africa (The 'John Ross' Trilogy) (Volume 1), by Isabella Bleszynski

About the Author Isabella Bleszynski, author. Born in a small fishing village in the north-east of Scotland, 'the descendant of sea-farers, Jacobites and others of that ilk', she has absolutely no doubt that her later sense of adventure was fostered by her sea-faring Macpherson grandfather, the great storyteller and historian of her young life. A few years after entering the teaching profession, she took up a contract with the Ministry of Overseas Development, London and left for Ndola, Zambia with her sons, then aged 6 and 4. Several years later she moved to Lilongwe, Malawi, a country with strong historical links to her native land. Her final tour in Africa took her north, to Libya where she worked for Sirte Oil Company in Marsa el Brega. The year after the US bombing of Tripoli and Benghazi, she finally returned to Scotland, almost 25 years later. Isabella now writes full time. She has two sons, four grandchildren and spends part of each year in Australia. 'For better or for worse - Scotland and Africa were the two great continuums of my life, Whatever I've written so far, or will write in the future, these places will no doubt continue to be both my source and my inspiration.'

Artist William W. Steidel has brought some of his fantasy paintings to life, with the telling of the story behind them, in "Whose Move," his beautifully illustrated children's book. Each fall after harvest, the dragon would storm into the village of Falorn. The people would hide in fear as the beast ransacked the town, eating anything and everything in sight—corn, wheat, flower boxes, and wagon wheels—and breathed fire and smoke as it thundered through the streets. The poor people were always left with nothing but scraps to live on, and more damage to repair. This continued year after year after year, until one day, a young, homeless orphan boy named Timothy confronted the dragon, and everything changed.

Whose Move, by Willam W. Steidel

About the Author In the window of a small, rustic gallery on the corner of First and Hemlock Street in the village of Cannon Beach, Oregon, the artist, William Steidel can often be found. He sits behind a simple but ingenious swing-out easel, surrounded by a hodgepodge of artistic tools and paraphernalia. Here Bill produces his particular brand of magic. He creates works of art, spins yarns, makes music, watches the passing parade of people, and delights in the view of the lush green mountains that lie in the distance. The passions of artistic philosophy emerged very early in Bill’s life on a small farm in Newburgh, New York. His work has progressed through the years from his time spent as a student at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Oregon, to his ensuing life experiences. Bill’s journey inspired him to open his first independent gallery and studio in Cannon Beach in the 1950s. Inside the present-day gallery is a touch of whimsy and wonder, and if you are fortunate, you are apt to find a bit of yourself present on the gallery’s walls. "Art, I find, is an emotional food. It gives us nourishment. We feed on its many forms, and if at times it jars too roughly, tickles too uncomfortably, or soothes too frequently, it would, if not available, be sorely missed. If we were unfortunate enough to lose it, we would once more create it so we could debate why it is so very necessary."

What can be done to stop madness from sweeping the world when political indecision is the norm? When the nation's leaders lack the backbone to stand up to them, what can stop an enemy that knows no rules? Charity.

Charity Styles is a former Olympian and US Army helicopter pilot. Captured and tortured by terrorists in Afghanistan after the opening blows of the War on Terror, she has a score to settle. Now working for the Department of Homeland Security, she is offered the opportunity to make a real difference.

Critical memories of her ordeal are buried deep in Charity's subconscious. When the director of Homeland Security's vaunted Caribbean Counterterrorism Command discovers the key to unlocking Charity's past, he unleashes a tempest, the fury of which no enemy can prepare for.

Already a martial arts instructor and pilot, Director Stockwell guides her training in marksmanship and spycraft, making Charity the most dangerous asset in America's covert arsenal. Charity then sets her sails, crossing the sea in an antique sloop. A single-minded, all-encompassing determination stays her course...to confront the enemy and play by their rules.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not great By marc haunz I like Wayne's books but not this one. The plot is just not sound. The US discovers a wanted afghan terrorist who is training fighters in Mexico to attack the US. Faced with this problem the US decides their best idea is to put single woman with PTSD on an old slow sailboat and make a long slow journey with a sniper rifle to take on fifteen armed terrorists. If that's how we fight the war on terror then God help us. I can think of hundreds of better ideas. Also, the book contains needless details about sailing or even what the lead character eats for breakfast or her choice of underwear. Cut out the filler stuff Wayne and get to the action.

By Kenny Treger If I wanted to learn about sailing I would have bought a book about sailing.I thought I bought an action adventure. Maybe like the first Jesse McDermitt book,Mr.Stinnett, please put some action back in your books. Are you out of ideas?I think you sold out and have been reading your reviews from the first Jesse McDermitt books.I got the book on kindle unlimited and read about half. learned a lot about sailing.NO ACTIONMr. Stinnett, I think we are done. But, thanks for the ride.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. New Series By D. Greene Not really what I was expecting based on the previous series... I am not a writer, so hard to explain, but involving primarily a one person storyline seemed to require too much detail around the day to day activities versus a constantly moving/evolving plot with multiple personalities involved...I will probably stick to just reading about Jessie... please keep those coming!

Barns nostalgically dot the rolling Southern hills of Indiana's farmland. With changing farm industry dynamics, barns are less in use. Even more unique; however, are round barns. During a boom-building era from 1890-1930, over 225 round barns were built in Indiana, the most of any state. Today only 20 round barns remain in Southern Indiana. Photojournalist, Kevin Douglas West has traveled his self-created Southern Indiana Round Barn Trail and captured all 20 of the round barns in stunning color and black and white. His stories of the history, current owners, and his personal experiences are alive with a deep passion for Indiana history and its contemporary beauty.

Not only were we pleasantly surprised by the historical content, but the photos made this history a reality for my kids aged 5 to 12. We find ourselves reaching for this book several times a week to read and re-read about these great barns in the Midwest. Definitely recommend to anyone as an educational book or a great coffee book table. Can't wait to follow the directions and find these barns next summer as we travel thru the Midwest.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Long Walk Through the Roman Ruins of Algeria By Lawrence J. Dugan This is a remarkable travel book/autobiography by Hilaire Belloc, about a solitary walking trip that he took (Belloc almost always travelled on foot, alone)through Algeria in the first decade of the last century. Covering between fifteen and thirty miles a day, Belloc describes the remnants of the Roman Empire in the North African mountains and desert. He moves along the coast and then into the Atlas mountains, encountering the Bedouin culture flourishing amidst the architectural ruins of the old imperial province of Muritania. Although an Englishman and a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, Belloc was not an insular Edwardian; he was dedicated to the idea of Roman Europe as the continual basis of Western civilization, and his reflections on the haunting ruins of the once great pagan, and then Christian civilization are fascinating. The ruins, the mountains, the long daily hikes, meeting native Algerians, drinking Algerian red wine, are all bound together in a beautifully written account that is accompanied in most editions by Belloc's drawings.

By Kayhold I have gotten several Kindle books from Baby Professor and most of them I have really enjoyed. This particular product is meant for first graders and it is about the early Pilgrims of America. The book starts off with short, simple explanations of what a pilgrim is and who the Pilgrims are that we always talk about. There are very cool illustrations in this book. The book also explains why they were called “Separatists” and how they left on their journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The book goes over the Mayflower Compact and what it meant to the Pilgrims. Then it talks about the first Thanksgiving feast – although it glosses over a lot of details with that. I have a child in kindergarten and a child in first grade. I think this is a cute book to start a discussion, but it’s pretty simplified for a first grader. Of course this book isn’t meant to be an entire history book or anything like that. When the Thanksgiving season comes around you could easily use this as a supplement to talk about the Pilgrims and look at some of the pictures. There are pictures of the homes they probably lived in and pictures of ships, and drawings of the Pilgrims and the Indians that are very interesting. I wish the pictures told more details. I wish that the drawing of the Pilgrims would say who the artist was. Then we could go more into detail and look up more by that artist. I wish that the picture of the boat would tell where that picture was taken. Was that the actual ship that the Pilgrims took? Is it just a random ship in a harbor? I have no idea, so don’t know what to tell my children. All in all this is a cute supplemental book but you will have to add a lot to it to make it worth it for a first grader or above, in my opinion. I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review.

It is an good introductory book with plain, simple and basic knowledge for any small children to learn either at home or school. These kind of books can spark an interest that may continue on for several days or weeks. This particular book deals about America's first pilgrims as a short and concise book pertaining to our earliest settlers. It has lovely illustrations and photos that can be discussed with children while reading this book. The concepts included about the Pilgrims, their reasons to travel to American Soil and the following is something to consider and to discuss with children as well.Great book, I did like it a lot and I do recommend to anyone. Please note that I have received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. If this review is helpful for you, then please click the “yes” button below. I have been doing extra things for them here at home because at public schools they do not get that one on one attention they need in any subjects they may need. I try and find books and learning equipment via the Kindle app or books. I like the Kindle books because you do not have to worry about what page you were on all your tablets, phones, etc can all be synced so you can see where your child is at. This book is super easy to read and has even some information my daughter who is in 3rd grade didn't know. I like how detailed it is as well.

Rory Armstrong is in trouble. The ship she pilots, The Foxfire Five, moon freighter, family business, home, has been badly damaged in a meteor storm. She's forced to abandon ship. With her younger brother Dash in tow, she crash-lands on the surface of the moon. Supplies are running out and the two are far from help. Worse yet, she finds herself embroiled in a plot by the villainous Janke Van Hoek, who has one aim: to become the Pirate King Of The Moon. It's a plan in which Rory, although she doesn't know it, has a part to play. And there is something else on the unforgiving deserts of the moon with an interest in the young space pilot. Something ancient, and very far from human... Pirates Of The Moon is a bold, fast-moving adventure in the tradition of classic SF yarns, starring a heroine with the tenacity and courage of Katniss Everdene and Tris Prior.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable easy reading By Mr. Robert Billing This is a delightful romp through a near future on the Moon. Aurora is bright, resourceful and above all likeable. Surrounded by a supporting cast of her long-suffering father, obnoxious brother, a whacky old chap and Arty (one of the most likeable aliens in the whole SF canon) she succeeds against the odds in defeating the ghastly crew of pirates and their really repulsive robot. The book is really a character study of Aurora and her relationships with friends and enemies, told against a background of fast paced, believable, action. It is a jolly good yarn, well spun and enjoyable to read. The unfolding of the story is so well handled that most readers will forgive a few technical mistakes- spaceships in vacuum just don't turn like that. What does matter is the way in which the juvenile characters are handled, and in that respect it succeeds completely. If you enjoyed Heinlein's "Have Space Suit, Will Travel", you'll get a lot out of this.

This is a reproduction of a 1960s book and Ipcar is a fantastic children's illustrator with a distinct style from that era. A pure pleasure to look at. The text, however, is not so great. I'm no expert, but I don't believe the part where she says once all cats were wild then we tamed them to become house cats. The illustration would have you believe Mittens is descended from lions and tigers. What about the Egyptian house cats? Doesn't bother me but I can tell you animal activists are *not* going to like all the pages about how animals work for the good of humankind. Just saying .... Pretty illustration thoug

There was a time, not long ago, when I thought things like giants, monsters, devils, and reluctant heroes on epic quests to faraway lands were all things of fiction. But then came that dreadful day when everything in my painfully ordinary life was confronted by an extraordinary realization—a realization that changed everything. Who would have thought opening the door to that small study in that modest South Carolina home would crack open a portal and unleash the fury of a forgotten kingdom? Who would have dreamed solving that seemingly innocent riddle would have set in motion a series of events that would forever solve an ageless puzzle about the struggle between good and evil? Who would have believed the things usually confined to the world of children’s book and low budget movies could actually be true? I didn’t—not then. But I do now.

In the aftermath of the horrifying attacks of September 11, 2001, a second wave of attacks is expected to hit the U.S. mainland. The year is 2002. A Cabal of elite "one world" proponents, in conspiracy with members of the Chinese government, has developed an operation to spark the birth of their new world order. John Powers, ex-Delta Force sniper and CIA operative and the Alpha Team, must act now. Joey Valentine, a 22 year-old African-American computer whiz and master hacker, Melissa Harrington, 21 year-old ex-con, convicted of killing her tormentor and child molesting step-father, and Jackie Allison, a 31 year-old ex-DEA undercover agent, together with John Powers, are the Alpha Team. Their employer is Sect-Intel, a private intelligence firm owned by Alex Cardenas, and under contract to the Department of Defense and the CIA. Following standard operating procedures is not the norm for John and the Alpha Team. They must do what it takes to prevent the horrifying multiple- pronged attack that is about to be unleashed on the United States. An author is an explorer and a teacher. If well done, a book presents facts, theories and psychology wrapped in a story-line so that the lessons are retained in whatever memory compartment excitement occupies. Operation Black Swan is just such a thrilling Master Lesson. John Powers and his team may be the swashbuckling operatives, but Owen Parr is the lecturer. With his considerable Wall Street experience, Parr reminds us of the vulnerability of our complicated, sensitive and interrelated global financial systems. He eloquently uses rich and colorful settings, fictional characters and dialogue to produce a riveting, fast- paced canvass. It is a fun and educational ride. Real historical events, people and facts are interspersed with probable fiction to teach us that we are under a real threat--- and we had better do something about it. Warriors and tyrants used to starve the enemy, deprive it of the means to live , drive it to submission. Today, cyber-criminals and their shadow State conspirators can bring America to its knees in a matter of days. Powers and Parr are warning us. Enjoy the Read ! Learn. Teach others. The Barbarians are at the Gates! Powers can not do it all.

Operation Black Swan: A John Powers Novel (John Powers Novels) (Volume 1), by Owen Parr

About the Author They always say, “Write what you know.” My multiple-plotted international political suspense thrillers come from what I know, what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard and what I shouldn’t repeat. I love writing them; I trust you’ll love reading them. When I read fiction, I want to be entertained. I want to be transplanted to the world that the characters are in. Through my writing, I want to take you away and have you join my characters and be part of the action and suspense world, that they are in. I was born in Havana, Cuba. Grew up in Miami during the 60’s, the so-called “drug-war” years and the rapid growth of “money laundering.” It was during those years, that the CIA was actively recruiting students at the campus of the University of Miami. I studied engineering and later owned and operated a multi-branch real estate company. In 1986, just prior to the stock market crash of 1987, I became a financial advisor with a major Wall Street firm. Proud to say, almost thirty years later, I am still at it and enjoying it tremendously. Many things have happened in Miami and my experiences have been varied. I draw from all of it to enrich my plots. You’re asking; when did you start writing? Right? All through my careers I wrote. Newsletters at the jobs, advertising campaigns, and articles for trade magazines and so on. In the 1990’s I developed an itch to write screenplays. I wrote two screenplays and outlined three others. Actually pitched “Due Diligence” the screenplay, personally to Oliver Stone. He loved the name, but did not care for the screenplay or the politics within it. I enjoyed the learning experience. In 2014, I began writing and converting my screenplays into action, suspense, fictional novels. “Due Diligence”, was released in January 2015. “Operation Black Swan,” released date, November 2015. “The Dead Have Secrets” and “States United” are to follow. I enjoy creating a veil of fiction around factual events. I call it, a fusion of facts and fiction. If you see me out and about, you’ll see me asking for a table for ten, to accommodate my lovely wife, whom I married 48 years ago, my daughters; Ingrid and Astrid, my beautiful grandchildren; Robbie, Logan, Dylan and Cameron. Did I say ‘ten’? I did, need room for my two best friends, Jose and Todd, the son in laws.

Just those few words are enough to shake democratic countries to their corp. A World order where all of mankind is subservient to the whims of a few powerful. Men that would decide every facet of our lives, what we read, see, hear, eat, but more importantly what we don't see or hear, or read. Free people would be brought to heel, told what to do, where to work, what to say. Just the thought of a world controlled by a few men reeks of gulags, labor gangs, hunger, starvation, and death. When the Islamic terrorists attacked the United States on 9/11 the world fell into fear and turmoil. It was in this period of mass confusion the cabal to form a new world order put Operation Black Swan into motion along with their partners, the Chinese.Owen Parr's exhaustive research into this time period has resulted in one of the most chilling accounts of what followed. Basing his facts in a fictional setting has given him leverage to push the truth of what happened and how the outcome will be hidden forever from the common man on the street. His Alpha Team led by John Powers takes us on a bullet ride to find out who is behind the efforts to collapse our financial, Military, and government system before it is too late. The suspense is palpable, the danger chilling, the outcome unpredictable. This is a white knuckler of a political thriller that must be told... and read.

The characters are interesting and diverse and you will be cheering for John Powers and his team during their dangerous rescue mission to Cuba. Parr deftly weaves current world events into the book's plot...one would think he has the inside track on what America's enemies are planning. I highly recommend this book...have read it twice...the second time as exciting as the first. More John Powers and his friends, please, Mr. Parr.

Herland is a utopian novel from 1915, written by feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The book describes an isolated society composed entirely of women, who reproduce via parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction). The result is an ideal social order: free of war, conflict, and domination. It first appeared as a serial in The Forerunner, a magazine edited and written by Gilman between 1909 and 1916. The book is the middle volume in her utopian trilogy; it was preceded by Moving the Mountain (1911), and followed with a sequel, With Her in Ourland (1916).

Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Review “Herland is utopia with a smile, a gently, witty version of what women can be. As fascinating to women for what it omits entirely as for what it discovers and invents for us, it is a fast and invigorating read. Herland’s real power now, as when it was published over sixty years ago, lies in its openness to what can still happen to us. Probably the most exciting portrayal is the strength of motherhood divorced from the nuclear family.” —Marge Piercy   “Cheers to Ann Lane for rescuing this delightful fantasy from obscurity. Gilman not only presents a charming/rational vision, but she exposes the absurdities of sexism in a way that still stings after half a century. If the utopias a society produced are any index of its ills, then Herland nails our own.” —Alix Kates Shulman   “Herland is pure delight. Those who know “The Yellow Wallpaper” but little else of Gilman’s life will be thrilled. What a serendipitous discovery!” —Susan Brownmiller   “It’s delightful to have Herland out in book form at last (after a sixty-five-year wait)! It’s a lovely, funny book. There is a wonderful flavor of Golden Age science fiction, which adds to the fun and doesn’t in the least spoil the argument, which is still fresh and very much of today.” —Joanna Russ   “Herland has always been the most endearing of utopian fantasies. It has also been, like that exploration of equality between the sexes that it projected, unavailable to the general reader. It is a joy to have it now in print. Generations of young women and men will be happier for the reading—and perhaps acting out—of some of its scenes.” —Eve Merriam   “An astonishingly readable proto—Ectopian novel, presaging themes of resurgent matriarchy that are getting much attention these days—a good-humored and thought-provoking look at what a literally Amazonian society might be like if no members of ‘the violent sex’ had been around for 2,000 years.” —Ernest Callenbach   “In Herland, Charlotte Perkins Gilman leaves the brooding spirit of “The Yellow Wallpaper” behind and gives us a robust vision of a feminist utopia—merrily exposing and exploding the conventions of patriarchy all along the way.” —Pamela Daniels

From the Inside Flap On the eve of World War I, an all-female society is discovered somewhere in the distant reaches of the earth by three male explorers who are now forced to re-examine their assumptions about women's roles in society.

About the Author Charlotte Perkins Gilman (July 3, 1860 – August 17, 1935) was a prominent American sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and non fiction, and a lecturer for social reform. She was a utopian feminist during a time when her accomplishments were exceptional for women, and she served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of post-partum depression.

Misunderstood By Melissa Boone Obviously, many people who read this book -- including most of the reviewers here -- clearly misunderstood Gilman's tone and objective in writing "Herland." The purpose of the book is NOT to say that women are better than men in every aspect of life, or that women can survive without men. Indeed, the inhabitants of Herland realize that without males, their society is incomplete, which is why the three young women are encouraged to court the three male visitors. Gilman portrays two of her three male characters sympathetically and intelligently, and even the chauvinistic one is portrayed as intelligent, just misguided.Gilman has two purposes, neither of which is to show the 'inferiority' of men. One, she wishes to show what a society would be like if everyone were treated equally. Two, and related, she wishes to show what society were like if people put the greater good above their individual goals. In that sense, Gilman's society is not socialism but more like anarchism -- there IS no central government; Herland operates like a large utopian family, in which everyone's role is equal and everyone has a very important role in society. No one's role is more important than any others, be they male or female. The reason for the Herlandians' physical besting of the men is to show that women are only 'weak' because they are sheltered, and in turn are sheltered because they are weak; also, while the Herlandians were natural women living in the natural world, the men are essentially 'sheltered' by technology (all of them being specialists in an area) and thus are not physically trained as the women are. It's like a female Olympic runner beating a male who runs for his college in his spare time.Of course, the book has flaws -- the utopian society of course, is without chink or problem, and Gilman ironically venerates traditional aspects of women, casting them into the stereotype of communal, compassionate, sacrificial mothers. The veneration of 'motherhood' almost religiously is hypocritical, as if every woman desires to be a mother. Predictably, no woman in the history of Herland seems to have a problem with denying self for the greater good, or the lack of tradition, or the taking away of her own children for communal rearing. For that, I have to say that Gilman -- while trying to deconstruct the typical notion of a woman -- inadvertently BUILDS it by assuming that all women have these characteristics naturally.

The novel is described as a feminist novel. Yet, this is not exactly acurate. The absence of men in the utopian society may seem extreme to some, and it is. This is how Gilman makes her point. She does not create a world without men because men are terrible creatures who have corrupted the world. The utopia which lacks men is a clean peaceful place, excelling in every way American society fails. But, it is neither the absence of men nor the presence of women that faciliates this. Gender, in this novel, is symbolic for the most part. Gilman does separate the two genders to destroy steroetypes, but also to establish a concrete difference between the two worlds. The male world is not bad, and the female good. The world in which people are defined by others and limited to these defined roles is bad, while the world in which people are free to grow without being defined or compared to others, and are able to see the oneness of all people is good. Comparing Herland to the reader's own world, Gilman begins destroying gender based stereotypes. Because there are no distinctions of gender in Herland, nor any superficial characteristics which accompany gender, Herland women take on the roles of all people without considering any limitations. These women are strong, agile, nurturing, intelligent, cooperative, and able to rely on themselves. They are not "typical" females. As Gilman explains through the male character Van, "Those 'feminie charms' we are so fond of are not feminine at all, but mere reflected masculinity--developed to please us because they had to please us, and in no way essential to the real fulfillment of their great process" (59). In the same way, stereotypes about men can be discredited. Such ideas have been made up to help people deal with the differences between men and women. Gilman shows the reader that if people stop basing their identities on what others want, they will no longer be slaves to limitations. They will be free to discover their true selves and will allow others to do the same. Gilman shows readers that men and women are distinct people, but reminds us that they are people first. This can be seen when Somel, a woman of Herland, innocently questions a male visitor, "But surely there are characteristics enough which belong to People, aren't there?" (89). Focusing more on these characteristics, those belonging to "People," allows humans to fulfill their personal potential without fear of jealousy. The women of Herland are able to live in "such universal peace and good will and mutual affection" (99) because "they lacked the sex motive and, with it, jealousy" (99). The women of Herland are free and equal because they are secure enough in themselves to offer and accept help for a joint cause, the betterment of their world. All readers, men and women alike, can learn a great deal from this humanist utopian novel.

Gilman's biting 1915 social satire on an all-female utopia By Lawrance Bernabo Charlotte Perkins Gilman was arguably the most important American author of the women's movement in the early 20th-century. In addition to editing a newspaper, "The Forerunner," she wrote "Women and Economics," one of the first studies of the role of women in the economic system. Gilman also wrote a number of utopias: "Moving the Mountain" in 1911, "With Her in Ourland" (1916), and her best-known, "Herstory" in 1915. In "Herstory" Gilman creates a homosocial (one-sex) utopian society made up entirely of women in which the culture, political system, and families are the result of having women as the basis (instead of merely stemming from the absence of men). However, while other American utopian novels, most notably Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward 2000-1888," were standard reading for decades, Gilman's "Herland" was pretty much forgotten until it was rediscovered in the 1970s. Even after four decades Gilman's satire was seen as still speaking to the conditions faced by American women.Following the conceit first used by Sir Thomas More in writing his "Utopia," Gilman's "Herstory" tells of three American explorers (male, of course), stumbling upon an all-female society in an isolated mountain valley in a land far away on the even of the first World War. Since they find this strange land to be civilized the explorers are convinced there must be some men hiding someplace, and set out to find them. As they search high and low for the male of the species they learn about the history of the country, the religion of motherhood, and the other unique customs, while trying to seduce its inhabitants. Many generations earlier the women had found themselves separated from the human race, with the men dying off. The society evolved, organizing itself around raising children and living in harmony with their surroundings. In the end, the three mail visitors end up falling in love with three of the women and are essentially converted as naturalized aliens."Herstory" is less science fiction than many of the utopian novels written during this period, and clearly its primary value is in terms of its provocative commentary on gender roles in the United States in the early 20th-century. Not surprisingly, Gilman questions the roles assumed by men and women in the "bi-sexual" society by showing the relative perfection achieved in Herland with its uni-sexual society. What Gilman sidesteps, of course, are the issues of sexuality: the women of "Herstory" are asexual beings, although they are capable of parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction). Also, by talking about these women as being descended from good Aryan stock she raises the specter of racism as well. But clearly Gilman's purpose is to provide a critique of the social order of the day, using humor as a way to mask her telling barbs and to provide her unorthodox views of gender roles, motherhood, individuality, privacy, and other issues. Then there are the parts where the inhabitants of "Herstory" are amused and horrified to learn about the conventional aspects of courtship, marriage, families, warfare, labor relations and even animal husbandry in the "real" world.Because "Herland" is essentially a novella, running only 124 pages in this unabridged Dover Thrift Edition, it is fairly easy to work it into a class looking at 20th century American utopian literature or the women's movement. In many ways, although it is not as well written, "Herland" is a much more provocative critique of women in American society than Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" or Marge Piercy's "Woman on the Edge of Time." "Herstory" also stands out because it is a true utopian novel, written at a time when the dystopian emphasis was about to redefine the genre of utopian literature.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: Adventure thriller. A freakish disaster at sea on an icebreaker left Damey locked in the bowels of the ship with no electricity, water, or heat. The rest of the ship suffered the same conditions with outdoor temperatures ranging in the vicinity of twenty below zero. They, however, were not locked into their rooms. The US Navy had discovered a mysterious flow of oil seeping out from under the ice shelf in the Antarctic. As a fifty year international ban went into effect in 1988 regarding any oil or mineral exploration in that area of the world, the discovery was automatically suspicious. For some reason, unknown to Dewline Robotics Engineering, the National Security Administration and Department of Defense were aware of the nuclear powered, oil-sniffing, underwater robot that Damey and his crew had been developing. The NSA contacted the company and asked for help. As the vice president of Dewline, Dr. Damarian Williams, PhD, AKA Damey, is considered one of the top, if not THE top robotics scientist/engineer “Geek” in the country. Therefore, Sam Wardwell, owner of Dewline, always left all emergency troubleshooting operations up to him, much to the chagrin of his wife, Zandy, and children, Zack, Zaiden, and Zane. The boys hated having Dad gone for extended periods.

Color my reading genre all of those...and author Larry Webb colors using a full box of Crayolas. A huge dose of heart tints the background. Three young brothers propel Webb's heart-touching tale forward by exhibiting that zest and zeal we Boomers recall and cherish. Two loving, dedicated parents keep their three sons a notch above their very successful careers in the computerized, robot-obeying world that's right around the corner, at least according to the 'Z' Team. And, this author skillfully describes a mind-boggling, high-tech creation coming to a place nearby...soon...so even this low-tech reader could learn and understand. "Nice work, Larry."Now, every story needs a vehicle to move if forward, so, Webb assigns Hector with that task, and he performs it flawlessly. He also uses two parents, Damey and Zandy, who take the upbringing of their boys seriously. And daily, they splash it with love.Strange, Webb's story caused this reader to see a deeper meaning; Hector represents the future of things to come; and these parents' love and raising of their children sadly represents the present breakdown of the American family. However, Webb's suspenseful tale is also splashed with hope. The reader watches a family planting positive seeds in every aspect of living to every person they come into contact with, and so, the 'Z' Team is doing their part to keep this country and its people, the best in the world.I enjoyed Webb's 'dream sequences' with Damey. They added the backstory perfectly. Supporting characters also fulfilled their tasks, nicely. And every well-told story needs that exzzziting and exzzzeptional ending, and Webb delivers. At completion, this reader closed the book and smiled, releasing a sigh of contentment. "Thank you, Larry, for a top-shelf, page-turning, and uplifting read. You knocked it out of the park. Keep writin'...and smilin'..."LeeCarey-author.com

Hathaway I have read all of Larry Webb's books and have enjoyedall of them. I always end up wondering what the charactersare doing after I finish reading them. Larry has a way ofmaking them feel like real people that you have come to knowand like. Thankfully, after Grandpa Tutor passed away ,wewere invited into the lawyer's office for the reading of his willand to his great surprise Damey was given a considerable amountof money to buy a “nice home” and continue his education. Now, 26yrs later he has attained his PHD in science and Roboticsand is married to Zandy, an accomplished project engineer at DewlineRobotics and three sons, Zachary, Zane, and Zaiden....thus the “Z team.”This book is full of excitement and adventure and some highly techni-cal complications which have been researched by the author and areaccurate as we do actually have robots in the oceans which have theability to search for oil leaks as Hector did. As Damey is lockedin a brig cell for privacy, he spends his time in dreams revealinga loving, caring relationship within his family and a lot of emotionfrom the boys who aren't happy when dad is gone for very longand at the age of puberty... it doesn't help much. How this all isresolved is very exciting but one would have to read the book tofind out. It is well worth it! Thanks Larry for another winner.Grandpa Tutor would be proud.Mary Hathaway, Battle Creek,Mi

He's a good writer getting better with each book. This book follows up on a character, Damey, that Larry introduced in one of his earlier books, Damey & Grandpa Tutor. The great novelist Anthony Trollope said that a book's plot is not all that important; a book is good if the characters in it have life in them. Larry is a good writer because his characters do have life in them, there is a sense that you are reading about real people rather than cardboard characters. The appeal of Damey & The Z Team is not so much in the plot (although that's pretty good, too) as in the characters Larry created. You are shown a lot of decent people, and a loving family interacting with one another. This book does not have a villain, as so many of Larry's other books do, and maybe that's one of the reasons why I like this book; Larry does a good job of creating mean, nasty villains, too, so to not have a mean, nasty character in this book was kind of a relief for me. I think the natural audience for this book is teenagers (teenage boys in particular), although many people of all ages would enjoy this book as well. Excellent job, Larry, can't wait to read your next book!
