Buck and Ned Oliver are twin brothers who, in their younger years, have a goal to set up a ranch in southwest Texas. This, the final book in the Diamond Bar-B Trilogy takes you, with the brothers, on their last mission as Texas Rangers. Lacking the necessary financial resources to develop a ranch on their own, Buck and Ned sign on with the Texas Rangers. Good plan? It was, as far as providing income, but the down side was this: They were on extended missions that didn't allow them the time they needed for making plans to even start up a ranch. The culmination of the brothers' frustration comes when after returning from their last mission, they have no sooner hung up their hats, they are summoned once more by their boss, Col. Tabor. It was this call to report that sent them into Mexico on a secret mission to either capture, or kill, the infamous bandit known as El Savage. If caught on the Mexican side of the border they, and the five Rangers they led, would be stood against a wall and gunned down by the Mexican Federal troops. Should they succeed, however, a rather large reward was there to split among the seven Rangers. Incentive enough, I reckon.

By mjobarnes I think it should have been the first in the series instead of the last as the others would have made clearer to understand. Now I have to reread the others to get all the facts right and finish the puzzle. I enjoyed the serIes.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. OMG! Thrilling! By Kindle Customer A heart pounding, breathtaking, roller coaster of emotions book. Agent Ward's daring, heroics keep me in the edge. And Adam makes me fall in love with him over and over again. This cliffhanger was so unexpected. So unfair. I hate it, but I will be looking for Book 6. So glad Ben, Jack, and Mike are back. Would love to see the demise of Parker. Tired of him. The series is the best of romance suspense. Kate Mathis is a genius writer, even if her cliffhangers are evil.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wow. Just wow. By Shelby Welch Wow. Just wow. I just finished the fifth Agent Melanie Ward novel, and I'm still a little numb. I should have finished reading a day ago, but the intensity of the book required me to step away from time to time. Melanie has returned to health from her kidnapping, but her life never slows. Even in her "retirement," she gets involved in and solves several cases that fall in her lap. The agency is reinvented, and life is more stable. Or is it?? I believe the characters in this series are as well drawn as I've ever read, and I've become so invested in them that I feel all of their ups and downs. The plots are always exciting and suspenseful. But . . . I did feel Shock Wave was a little disjointed and confusing at times, more so than the other books in the series. And why, oh, why can't Mel and Adam catch a break?? Just when I think they're going to be really happy, wham! Oh, another thing--Marie?? Really?? I truly feel heart palpitations when she shows up, and not in a good way. I'm really worried about Adam's feelings for her. Kate Mathis, you are a master of the cliffhanger, but it's REALLY hard on us readers when the next book often takes more than a year to appear. I love this series, but maybe it's time for some positive resolutions before the suspense eats us alive! I really shouldn't give five stars because there were problems in the book, but the overall story wins the five-star rating.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kate is a magical writer with an amazing imagination. Wishing her all the best for future ... By Traveler I don't usually go in for this kind of genre, but after the first book in the series I was hooked. It doesn't seem to matter what Adam does, I'm loving him and hope he comes out on top in the final book. The ending of Book 5 was a shocker and it took me a few days to get over it. Kate is a magical writer with an amazing imagination. Wishing her all the best for future books.

The Penny and The Prayer, by Robert Reeve

About the Author I am a child, animal, poet and saint – with a very small ‘s’. The child laughs. He enjoys life in all its simplicity and innocence, longing to share the joy with those he loves. The animal embraces the gift of natural instinct, running to survive, blissfully at home in the gift of creation. The poet savours intimate words of the divine and delights in writing. The saint thrives on the intimacy of Christ which thrusts him out to find meaning and purpose in the world. He encourages through preaching the whispers of heaven he has faintly overheard.

It allows the reader to travel through time and various cultures as the author witnesses the evolution of the three main characters, desperately hoping to find their own identity in life. Robert Reeve's writing is great and I particularly enjoyed the accuracy of various literary/historical references in the book as well as some philosophical thoughts. I found some bits a bit violent as a sensitive person, so be aware of this. Great first novel and I'm looking forward to see what will come next from this author.

By Colin reeve This lovely book traces the mythic restitution of family from the brokeness of war and poverty to a final epiphany of hope. Any reader will enjoy the mixture of finely crafted detail and philosophical thought contained in the plot. As the story unfolds the author skilfully weaves together a number of strands to produce a tale that is both moving and shocking but which also grasps at a future unity of humanity beyond the page.

Bayou folk, by Kate Chopin

About the Author Kate Chopin was an American author whose works include two novels and nearly one hundred short stories. Chopin s close relationships with her female relativesher mother, grandmother, and great-grandmotherprovided inspiration for her strong female characters. Although some of her works were controversial at the time of publication, Chopin is now considered to have been ahead of her time and a precursor to the wave of feminist writing in the twentieth century. Chopin s most notable works include The Awakening, At Fault, and the short story Desiree s Baby, which explores race relations in antebellum Louisiana. Chopin died in 1904.

They provide a snapshot of life in Louisiana in the late 19th century, and truly fulfill this reader's desire to be transported to a different time and place. In each story, often only a few pages long, the author paints a vivid picture a the characters, their circumstances, and motivations. The theme of all the stories is change. Although the turns of events described are generally not monumental, they are often the catalyst for a significant change in a character. And sometimes the point is that there is no change.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Classic- Buy/read this book, it's worth it! By R. Knapp Kate Chopin is one of the best writers ever. She is worth reading for that fact alone. (Period)Chopin's stories are culturally significant for a diverse and stirred up post Civil War Louisiana society. They are humanly sigificant. She is sensitive and fair-minded.Chopin has been criticized for not holding 21st Century values and criticizing the racist/sexist/elitist world she lived in. However, she has done better. She has reported things 'as they were'. That's what makes these stories important. (If she were to be editorial, I'd wonder what she has to say about us. I doubt she'd see social improvement.)Chopin was lost in obscurity following her novella, The Awakening. Rediscovery, awareness, and interest came in the '70's, catalyzed by the feminist movement.I discovered Chopin in an anthology, Forms of the Novella (David H. Richter, 1981, Knopf), which contains The Awakening. (Buy Forms of the Novella next.) My reaction was interesting. Despite recognizing the greatness of Chopin as a writer, I was deeply disturbed by this story and doubted whether I wanted to read more. Learning of the feminist connection also made me uneasy. It made me think she had an 'agenda'. Curiosity prevailed. My trepidation was inappropriate. Chopin is the least sexist writer I can think of. She laughs at men & women, and cries with them, equally. These stories are delightful! If you can read, read them! Even the ones that are fluffy and predictable are worth the read (see my first sentence).

Riveting and intimate insight into the Bering Straight Swim By SibirTigr28 Jack Bright - the consummate adventurer, explorer and extreme winter swimmer - shares his beautifully composed memoirs from the tumultuous years leading up to the finally successful first-ever swim crossing of the entire Bering Strait from Cape Dezhnev (Chukotka, Russia) to Cape Prince of Wales, (Alaska, America) by a team of international cold water swimmers. Involved in the Bering Strait Swim project from its conception many years ago, Bright's notes provide a riveting and intimate insight into all the events surrounding the record-setting swim that many of the swimmers (most likely) are still not privy to. Jack's prose is akin to his cold water swimming style: well-thought-out and bravely honest from his vantage point. An educating and interesting read that leaves you with the impression that Bright may very well be the English-speaking authority on the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the currents that cut through the Bering Strait and ex-pat life in Prague. Looking forward to reading more of Bright's adventures.

Moon Over Cabarete is a travel memoir of the Dominican Republic and a personal journey of discovery, written with a sense of romance and filled with dramatic incidents, colorful stories, laughter and tears. Julie and Bill Veazey first vacationed in Cabarete, a small fishing village in the Dominican Republic, in 1987. The breathtaking natural beauty of the country and their affection for the people they met there brought them back time and again over the next 20 years, during which Cabarete transitioned from a rural economy into a world-class water sports and vacation destination. This memoir recounts a series of events and adventures that run the gamut from funny to achingly sad and captures the Veazeys' attempts to live harmoniously in a new environment, along with observations of the unpretentious Dominican people and their country.

By Susan Tremblay I SO enjoyed this warm, witty, touching travelogue, and felt instantly transported to the sunny "DR" and, specifically, quaint Cabarete. Veazey captures, with charm and care, the sights, sounds, smells and experiences shared with her husband, as well the unpretentious Dominican people whom they befriended. A must-read for those seeking refuge from the cold of winter...or anyone who wishes to travel vicariously!

Invitation to a voyage By Elizabeth Storm I had the good fortune to be one of the many guests invited to Los Alisios, Bill and Julie Veazey's hand-crafted home and garden in Cabarete, a small town in the Dominican Republic. Although I visited three times and learned quite a bit about their adventures over the years, Moon Over Cabarete filled in significant details. This beautifully crafted memoir is, in fact, a page turner. I couldn't put it down.

Bestselling and award-winning author, Sharon G. Flake, delivers a mystery set in the 1950s that eerily blends history, race, culture, and family.Octobia May is girl filled with questions. Her heart condition makes her special - and, some folks would argue, gives this ten-year-old powers that make her a "wise soul." Thank goodness for Auntie, who convinces Octobia's parents to let her live in her boarding house that is filled with old folks. That's when trouble, and excitement, and wonder begin. Auntie is non-traditional. She's unmarried and has plans to purchase other boarding homes and hotels. At a time when children, and especially girls, are "seen, not heard," Auntie allows Octobia May the freedom and expression of an adult. When Octobia starts to question the folks in her world, an adventure and a mystery unfold that beg some troubling questions: Who is black and who is "passing" for white? What happens when a vibrant African American community must face its own racism? And, perhaps most important: Do vampires really exist? In her most and probing novel yet, Sharon G. Flake takes us on a heart-pumping journey.

Unstoppable Octobia May, by Sharon Flake

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Octobia May has an untamed imagination. When she moves in with her Auntie Shuma, Octobia spends her days doing chores with her pretend servant friends, talking to the graves of the Before Girls at the nearby cemetery, and trying to unveil one of Auntie's boarders, Mr. Davenport, as the vampire he is. With the help of her friends, Jonah and Bessie, Octobia uncovers the dastardly deeds of Mr. Davenport, although the deeds have more to do with bank robbery and murder than with drinking blood. This story paints a realistic portrait of life for an African American girl in the 1950s, but the characterization and plot are marred by unclear writing. While the plot meanders, little information is offered about Octobia's (or any other character's) backstory, leaving readers ungrounded throughout the tale. Awkward quote attributions and murky action may have been meant to add to the mysterious nature of the plot, but fall short as one passage may take several examinations to comprehend. The way the adults, especially police officer O'Malley, in this story inexplicably flounder about with a cold-blooded murderer on the loose is unbelievable. Short chapters begin with a thick, black border, and a selected bibliography of relevant history ends the novel. While Octobia and other well-rounded characters were enjoyable and the overall plot was exciting, a less complicated writing style would have better highlighted the good this story offered.—Brittany Staszak, Glencoe Public Library, IL

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining. By Heidi Grange There were many things I liked about this book and a few things I did not. On the positive side, I really enjoyed Octobia May and her friend Jonah. Octobia May is a girl full of spunk and curiosity who relishes the freedom living with her aunt gives her after being smothered by her parents after nearly dying. Unfortunately, she tends to misuse her freedom to spy on one of her aunt's boarders, Mr. Davenport and she drags her friend Jonah into her misadventures. Her determination to prove Mr. Davenport is a vampire exasperates her aunt and everyone else around her. And her neighbors highly disapprove of her behavior as it is 1953 and she is expected to behave with more decorum. But slowly she starts to realize that what she thought was going on isn't what is going on at all and she better figure things out in a hurry before she finds herself losing all her new found freedom.I enjoyed the look at a time period I am not overly familiar with and what life was like for many African Americans. The twist that Flake adds to the story is an intriguing one and one that I don't think most middle grade readers will have spent much time pondering. Octobia May also finds herself confronting the whole 'don't rock the boat' ideology that many people find themselves sitting in as she listens to her aunt and others talk about changes that would like to see but who are unwilling for the most part to help seek those changes. The problems I had with the book revolve around the style of writing and the occasional use of dialect. At first I thought these were just errors but they kept happening so I then assumed that it was supposed to be a way of speaking, which I found a bit irritating. I have no idea how realistic this is for the time (1953) and place (African American community in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) but it rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Not enough to stop me from reading the book, but enough to make it a much less smooth read. The use of present tense didn't really bother me as it works to keep the reader knowing only what Octobia May knows which adds tension. But the short often incomplete sentences were sometimes hard to follow and I didn't always know who was talking or to whom.Overall, the story was enjoyable with plenty of action and tension, great characters, and an interesting setting. But the style and writing could have been smoother.

The issues of race and gender are wonderfully addressed. Octobia is the narrator and her voice is delightful. Not a childish book at all.

I mean come on look at it. Then I want to go on and say that when you pick up this book to remember that it is a children's book.I read this book thinking that it was going to be about a young girl on a supernatural mystery thrill ride. While it was a book about a young girl and an adventure, the supernatural part was not all that present, and for spoiler reason I won't say why. I read this book for #MarchMysteryMadness, and I'm not disappointing with what I read, but to be honest with myself, due to the way that it was written, (I thought the sentence structure was very choppy) it took me about 100 pages into the book, and to get a hang of the rhythm of the book and how it would read from the mind of a little girl btw the ages of 7-10 in 1953.The book was filled with historical references (Thurgood Marshall, Korean War is mentioned and even goes into explaining how it was for a Negro soldier to be with the ranks of whites who didn't even want them around and belittle them, and they even mention Satchel Paige) and I think it can definitely will show you a small slice of what the world was like in 1953 in a small town, in a boarding house with two rambunctious kids running around during the summer time. It even touched on what it was like for women in those days, especially a black woman, owning her own business and wanting that business to grow, and to see so much hate for that (coming from both blacks and white), as if the only "real" role for women in that day, especially being black, was in a subservient manner or nothing more than a house wife waiting to cook, clean, or iron her husbands shirts. Was this book for me? No, but I don't regret reading it. It set out in my mind being one thing, but absolutely took the first right hand turn on the left and went in another direction. It showed a young girl with an unquestionable amount of curiosity in her, and the eagerness and strong will to keep on fighting, searching and asking questions of the world around her. And an never ending quest to be as free as she could. You go Octobia May, I see you girl.

Calabasas is located in the hills west of the San Fernando Valley in the northwest Santa Monica Mountains. The Chumash Indians were the first to settle in this picturesque region, abundant with wildlife, water, and shady oak trees. The early years of Calabasas offer a colorful history full of buried treasure, cattle and sheep ranches, stagecoaching, ghost sightings, and some of Southern California’s roughest and toughest residents. Between the 1920s and 1970s, countless films and television episodes were filmed in the west San Fernando Valley area alone. It was a time when Westerns ruled the scene, and the studios bought up huge tracts of underdeveloped acreage in the hills around Calabasas to serve as movie ranches. Today, Calabasas is primarily a city of master-planned communities that are home to over 23,000 residents, including many of Hollywood’s rich and famous. In banning secondhand smoke, plastic bags, and Styrofoam, Calabasas has been on the forefront of enacting environmental stewardship to preserve its historical roots and protect its open spaces.

Loving Japan By Jorge Arias Again, after "Glimpses on unfamiliar Japan" and "Out of the East" Lafcadio Hearn does his best for the comprehension of Japan. His love for Japan is infectious. It is impossible do not love Japan after any Hearn reading. Besides, he is very clear, sometimes elegant, always sober and intelligent. A side remark: I am interested, after "Japan, an attempt..." in reading Mr. Herbert Spencer!
