Bear and Squirrel Are Friends . . . Yes, Really!, by Deb Pilutti

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrel are unusual friends who help each other out. Bear shakes trees so that acorns fall down for Squirrel, and Squirrel helps Bear with some household dusting, but they also play games and have fun together. The other bears and squirrels don't get it—the other bears think Squirrel would be a great snack, and Squirrel's friends worry he'll get eaten. After a long winter of hibernation, Bear awakens and sees Squirrel as a cupcake, and tells Squirrel how delicious he looks. After a few ambiguous and terrifying moments where Bear declares that he can't resist, readers learn that Bear has eaten the blueberry pancakes Squirrel has made without saving any. Bear and Squirrel's friendship is sweet and endearing, but their story is also full of humor, such as when Bear uses Squirrel's tail as a feather duster, Bear's dream bubbles show sandwiches and pizza, and he literally sees Squirrel as a cupcake. The clear, simple illustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story and perhaps even learn about being a good friend. VERDICT A general purchase for most library collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Review They might look very different, but Bear and Squirrel are friends. They both like to gather blueberries and acorns for supper. Bear helps Squirrel build his home in a tree. Squirrel helps Bear keep his den clean (fluffy tails make great dusters). And both of them enjoy playing games. Squirrel's squirrel friends ask Squirrel if he is worried Bear might eat him for a snack. "Don't be silly!" Squirrel scoffs. Bear's friends suggest that Bear might find Squirrel a tasty snack. "That's ridiculous!" Then Bear settles in for a long winter nap, and his friend settles in to wait, knitting a prodigious scarf as he does so. When Bear finally wakes up, they're glad to see each other…but they seem different. Bear looks very toothy, and Squirrel—well, Squirrel looks delicious. To the starved Bear, Squirrel actually looks rather a lot like a cupcake. Bear just can't help himself. There's much chomping and chewing, and Bear apologizes…for eating all the pancakes. Whew. Graphic designer Pilutti presents an unconventional friendship tale in a mix of full-bleed and spot illustrations with a smattering of dialogue bubbles that fit seamlessly into the story. The muted palette and flat, cartoon style work well with the silly, affirmative tale. A nifty, expectation-defying read-aloud. (Kirkus July 15, 2015)Given the title, there’s no chance Bear would ever want to eat Squirrel, right? Just look at the way that Bear shakes acorns out of trees for Squirrel, and how Squirrel lets Bear use his bushy tail for a dust mop. Their friends, however, remain unconvinced. Squirrel’s fellow squirrels are horrified, while Bear’s pals savor fantasies of eating Squirrel in popcorn, in soup, or even in a sundae. Then comes the ultimate test: Bear goes into hibernation (Squirrel patiently knits a scarf that gets longer and longer) and wakes up feeling as hungry as, well, a bear. Can the friendship—and Squirrel—survive? With toylike drawings, sophisticated characterizations, and sly visual jokes, this very funny story tests and tickles readers’ faith in unlikely friendships before ending up right where it should, thanks to a little narrative misdirection and a Squirrel who knows his friend all too well. Yes, Pilutti (Ten Rules of Being a Superhero) is messing with her audience’s minds, but they won’t mind one bit. (Publishers Weekly July 6, 2015)In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrelare unusual friends who help each other out. The clear, simpleillustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story andperhaps even learn about being a good friend. (School Library Journal September 2015)This comical take on an unusual friendship offers lessons in resisting peer pressure and temptation. The story starts by acknowledging that bears will sometimes eat squirrels. But this particular Bear and Squirrel, first shown exchanging a blueberry and an acorn, are friends. They have fun together, chatting on tree trunks or playing hide-and-seek in the forest (though Bear is pretty easy to spot). They help each other out—Squirrel uses his tail to sweep Bear’s den; Bear shakes trees till acorns fall down. But the other bears think Bear is missing out on a tasty snack, and the squirrels think Squirrel is playing around with a killer. The big test comes after Bear wakes up from hibernation and sees Squirrel as a delicious cupcake. Gouache illustrations in gentle colors soften the somewhat scary premise and keep humor at the fore. Readers will love the suspense of the final pages, the resolution of which is a resounding endorsement for friendship through thick and thin (and hunger). (Booklist Online August 31, 2015)

The author uses a rather muted color palette, smart design choices and cartoon-like characters to tell a story that is filled with moments of sly humor. I've been reading this story to various groups of preschoolers all week with great success. The author builds suspense as she leads us through a description of this rather unorthodox friendship, bear's hibernation, and bear's great hunger when he wakes. Will he eat his friend? That's the question that will engage any story time audience, as they can see where this is going from early on. I heard whispered questions as they eagerly waited for me to turn the page. That's great story time stuff! This picture book is wonderfully paced, very well written and filled with enough small details to guarantee lots of requests for repeat reads. No worries, all ends well and the power of friendship is once again reinforced. A surprisingly light and whimsical take on the typical hibernation theme and an enthusiastic recommend.

This classic from science fiction’s Golden Age envisions a primitive future where only the forbidden technology of the past can save an endangered tribe from violent extinction Five centuries into the future, America is no longer what it used to be. Many generations after the old civilization was consumed in a nuclear firestorm, the few survivors have returned to a simple, agrarian lifestyle and eschew the malevolent “magic” of science that brought about “the Doom.” When the Dalesmen of the Alleghenies are threatened by the hostile Lann descending from the North, their chieftain’s son, Carl, is dispatched to the blasted ruins of an ancient city to trade for metal and weapons.   However, something extraordinary awaits him in this feared and forbidden place: a time capsule from the twentieth century containing the essential scientific and technological information of a lost society. Carl knows his discovery can help rescue the Dalesmen’s homes and farms. But the law is unbending in this age of superstition—and if the chieftain’s son returns this forbidden knowledge to his people, the tribal Doctors will surely put him to death. One of Poul Anderson’s earliest science fiction masterworks, Vault of the Ages is at once a riveting tale of adventure and a deeply human story of duty and destiny offering a stunning vision of an all-too-possible future.

Review “Enthralling.” —The New York Times Praise for Poul Anderson “One of the field’s greatest writers.” —Orlando Sentinel “One of the towering figures of modern science fiction and fantasy.” —Publishers Weekly

About the Author Poul Anderson (1926–2001) grew up bilingual in a Danish American family. After discovering science fiction fandom and earning a physics degree at the University of Minnesota, he found writing science fiction more satisfactory. Admired for his “hard” science fiction, mysteries, historical novels, and “fantasy with rivets,” he also excelled in humor. He was the guest of honor at the 1959 World Science Fiction Convention and at many similar events, including the 1998 Contact Japan 3 and the 1999 Strannik Conference in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Besides winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards, he has received the Gandalf, Seiun, and Strannik, or “Wanderer,” Awards. A founder of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, he became a Grand Master, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.   In 1952 he met Karen Kruse; they married in Berkeley, California, where their daughter, Astrid, was born, and they later lived in Orinda, California. Astrid and her husband, science fiction author Greg Bear, now live with their family outside Seattle.

By Ed Sharpe Archivist for SMECC When I first read "Vault of the Ages" it was an exciting book; in reviewing it as an adult close to 40 years later as an adult I find it still an enjoyable read. Looking back on the stories I read in my youth this had to be the first in the series of this genre of post doomsday chronicles that I continued to enjoy...This book emphasizes messages about human responsibility and the importance of using science only for good almost as though accentuated with a bright yellow Hi-Lighter Pen.The story is set in the Alleghenies roughly 500 years after a nuclear holocaust, Vault of the Ages tells the story peaceful farming tribes vs. fierce warriors. Carl, our lead hero and son of the village Chief is responsible for trading with the people from the ruined city to obtain metal and other needed materials form the remains of skyscrapers etc... Carl and his companions discover a "time vault," basically a large time capsule remaining from the pre-holocaust civilization, containing numerous tools, books, models of apparatus and more depicting the sciences that have since been lost. With the aid of the newly discovered sciences and much common sense he is able to help his people. In rereading the description of the 'VAULT' it brings a smile to my face when I look around our office, library and museum facilities here at the Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communications and Computation here in Glendale Arizona.... I can imagine a facility such as this being the 'VAULT' spoken of in this story. I wonder what the world will be like in 500 years and what part the material preserved by the museum here will play in it....Ed Sharpe, Archivist for SMECC[...]

Vault of the Ages, quality early Poul Anderson By Mithridates VI of Pontus Vault of the Ages (1952), one of Poul Anderson's earliest novels, should not be missed. Although Vault of the Ages is at its core a simplistic juvenile (50s sci-fi for younger readers), Anderson's budding storytelling skills make it engaging and a joy to read. If only I had read it when I was younger! Suggested for any fans of 50s sci-fi, early post-apocalyptical sci-fi, and Poul Anderson completests.Brief Plot SummarySometime in the future the "Doom" (caused by atomic weapons) wipes out civilization -- all that remains are intensely superstitious loosely confederated tribes who live in wooden houses and tend livestock. Five hundred years after the Doom somewhere in the Alleghenies a boy named Carl, the son of the chief of the Dalesmen, dares to defy taboos and seek out the City (the ruins of a pre-Doom settlement). The plot concerns an invasion of fierce northern peoples called the Lann. Driven by a cooling climate and attacks from other unnamed peoples, the Lann desire to occupy the lands of the Dalesmen. Unlike other authors who are content to leave the "barbarian" enemy a nameless force of evil, Anderson tries give a rational for their actions and even introduces a character in parallel to Carl, Lenard, the son of the chief of the Lann. Like Carl, Lenard also does not fear the taboos and supposed curses and demons associated with ancient technology and the City.Carl is sent to the City to acquire metal (yanked from old skyscrapers) from the "witches" (various people who eek out an existence in the ruins). Here Carl finds a time vault with instructions to resurrect ancient technology (including simplistic mechanical technology -- windmills, sailboats, etc). The Dalesmen are suspicious of the time vault and its contents and condemn Carl to death. It's up to him and his few trusted friends to rescue his own people (despite their suspicion of him), raise the taboos on the technology which can deliver his people, and obtain the secrets of the vault before Lenard and the Lann!Final ThoughtsThe plot itself pulls no punches -- it's predictable and free of frills/twists etc. However, Anderson infuses his narrative with energy and excitement. Despite knowing the outcome I found myself rooting for Carl nevertheless! Vault of the Ages is characterized by unbridled optimism and obvious morals -- technology is beneficial if used by the right people and the right people are the idealistic young who push against the boundaries imposed by their elders with the good of society at heart. In frustrating 1950s fashion, the "idealistic young" are men... Women are nowhere to be seen.

Set 500 years after a nuclear disaster, a tribe in what is now the Alleghanies tries desparately to keep an invader from taking over. The son of a chiefian seeks shelter in a place that the others in his tribe are afraid of, and finds a very large time capsule in which the technology of our day is preserved in record. The rest deals with the invading horde which desparately needs fertile land or it'll strave and the fears of the tribe. Anderson showed his good writing from the beginning

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun and Sickening By Hydra M. Star I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of my life studying and thinking about alien abduction/visitation and UFO conspiracy theories. No, really. I almost daily read first person accounts, listen to podcasts, or watch online videos about the “UFO reality”. Naturally, I have my own opinions and, dare I say, beliefs (or dis-beliefs) regarding it all, but it’s very safe to say that when it comes to this topic I know the lore well...and so does Casper Jean Rimbaud. So, I really appreciated Rimbaud’s attention to detail in regards to incorporating UFO lore into his book, but I appreciated even more just how much of a psychopath his character Samuel California is. This character has no compassion. None. Unlike a lot of the “friendly psychopaths” in literature, movies, and television today, he is not punishing the bad. He is doing what needs to be done, but he is not grappling with guilt afterward. In fact, the distinct impression is given that he regards torturing and killing basically innocent people to be a really good time. The violence and hurt he causes is treated as a sort of game by him. This makes his character both fun and sickening and his actions gut-wrenching and disturbing. I’d advise readers to not go into this book expecting to like the villain, unless you utterly hate all of humanity. The rest of the book’s characters, with the exception of Mr. G, are more or less normal, even run of the mill, examples of humanity. The Pattersons, who are the main focus of California’s attention, are an average middle class Australian family with average middle class family values and problems. Or at least they were until seventeen year old Sarah Patterson saw a UFO. This sighting prompts two men in black (California and G) to visit the family. They are seeking the information the UFO downloaded and hid away inside young Sarah’s mind and they are ready to use all of their advanced mental abilities and physical violence in order to get it.I was expecting there to be a bit more sex in this story. It is published by an operation named Fiction Terrifica, after all, and there was what seemed like a bit of erotic foreshadowing, but there wasn’t really any of that here...*sigh* But, the powerful writing style of the author more than made up for this.I very much look forward to his future releases.

I was not disappointed in the slightest. Post Encounter had me wanting to keep turning the pages, and at the same time actually had me questioning if there was any truth in any of this. Well written, and great cover art. Can't wait to see what else this author has to offer.

The final book of the Apertures trilogy! The dream of a different alternity where Americans can begin anew has been a goal of Jan and Jani Jenkins almost since the first of the Apertures Era. Now they are working against time and selfish politicians to see it happen before the whole world goes up in flames. They are urgently ferrying colonists and equipment to a new earth that only they can reach, but often it seems as if the fates are conspiring against them and all they hold dear. But when the going gets tough, real Americans will always buckle down and try even harder. Yet this time, the twins may lose all they have worked for. War, unethical politicians, a mass movement aimed at controlling all aperture formation and the terrible loss of loved ones will test them in ways they never dreamed possible. If they can persevere, though, the reward may be worth it. Barely. Read all three books of this unusual saga of alternate earths, written in Darrell Bain’s own inimitable style that his fans have come to love.

The ride itself is quite fun. However, not too believable, and the religious backdrop in terms of beliefs and actions of the characters was a bit much. Is anyone really this incredulous in this day and age? I had an issue with that part. Other people might not.

By Terry A Eddy Las adventuras de Jaime Azcarate son siempre interesante, y este no es una excepcion. No se de donde Magnano encuentra sus argumentos, pero todos son diferentes. Si de vez en cuando los no son complemente creibles, que mas da. Me gusta.

This is one of those books you loose sleep over because you just need to read the next chapter...then the next chapter...instead of going to sleep and saving the next chapter for tomorrow. The twists and turns keep you guessing throughout. An excellent read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The next Dan Brown? By Oregon Art Lover I’ve just put down Charles O’Donnell’s new book, Moment of Conception. What a wild ride it was! Set largely in Italy, the novel evokes Dan Brown’s work in the mystery-thriller genre. Though O’Donnell is just beginning his writing career, this second book in the saga of Matt Bugatti hints that this new author may become a better craftsman than Brown.Bugatti is an engaging hero: extremely smart, generous of spirit, and an uncommonly decent human being. In this second tale of his adventures, Bugatti is set with a mystery: what is the cause of the untimely deaths of 49 young women, all of whom have taken a tainted morning-after pill. A parallel story, equally filled with tension, is a bombing conspiracy by religious zealots aimed at abortion clinics.Lest you think this book is a platform for the author to advocate abortion, it is not. He does not take this easy road: abortion is a morally complex issue with no unequivocal answer, likely more so for the women facing this difficult choice. However, O’Donnell does make a clear argument against violent extremism. His poisoner and clinic bombers are ruthlessly evil, never plagued with qualms nor second thoughts.Bugatti prevails over the bad guys and, at the end, reminds us that reason and decency are his guiding principles. He also donates to a female anti-abortion political candidate—possibly the author’s way of keeping the conception scales in balance. This novel isn’t perfect in plot or pacing, but it is very, very good. I look forward to reading more by Charles O’Donnell.

Just because we haven’t made contact doesn’t mean we’re alone. Just because we know some things doesn’t mean we’re smart. And just because we feel safe doesn’t mean we are. Nothing in Gregory Samson’s life could have prepared him for the shock of waking up with a sentient alien warship growing out of his neck, but that life is over now. In his new one, Greg will have to find a way to balance budding romance and a dead-end job with the reality of a galaxy united in a million year-old war against a race of genocidal insects, all while asking himself the most terrifying question any millennial can ever face: Is it finally time to leave home?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Come for the lasers, stay for the existential crisis of adulthood By Matt Menzenski The best way I can summarize my feelings on "The Origami Man" is that this book really shouldn't be as enjoyable as it is. Any one element of this novel, taken out of context, seems utterly random and ridiculous—spaceships grown from seeds! whales turned into spaceships! an insect backpack/exoskeleton/supersuit! Humphrey Bogart in space!—and yet, combined into a novel, everything works, and works successfully. "The Origami Man" is a quick read, riotously funny in parts, and often felt to me like a pictureless graphic novel in its pacing and visceral style of description. It's not all flash bang pow shoot-em-up sci-fi, though. The inner monologues of the protagonist, Greg Samson, will be familiar to al twenty-somethings who are struggling to decide for themselves just what 'adulthood' means, and whether they've reached that threshold yet. Read this book. You'll enjoy it, and it'll stick with you in a way that might surprise you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I haven't had so much fun reading a book in a long time By Meredith Clarke The Origami Man hardly ever left my side while I was reading it. It kept my cereal bowl company in the morning, waited patiently for me between shifts in the early afternoon, and put me to sleep at night (not because it was awful, I'm just a very busy, tired person). I haven't had so much fun reading a book in a long time. The storyline is absolutely ridiculous in the best ways possible and the dialogue has a wit that's only believable in the cooky spacetime that The Origami Man exists, and it works. Between face-palming my forehead at the wonderfully punchy back-and-forth between Cab and Greg, I found my wrists trembling with a sense of overwhelming smallness at my own humanity in the face of intergalactic terrorism. Mumford-Zisk somehow manages to make you cringe, laugh, and cower all at once. Easy five stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful By Me A great read, and everything a sci-fi book should be. Extremely funny and existing in a detailed world full of new concepts and ideas that I haven't seen before, "The Origami Man" felt like someone blended "The Hitchicker's Guide to The Galaxy" with "Iron Man," and the "Iron Giant," but made someone like David Sedaris tell the story. The voice of Greg Samson is strong, and the reader will surely want to follow him wherever he goes--and he goes all over. Space feels realistically massive rather than something that a sci-fi action hero can carelessly dart through. It has scope. Humorous scope, and delightful pop culture observations. Surreally real. Can't wait to see the second installment.

Brilliant and Engrossing By Amazon Customer Taking a series like Doublesight and doing something different with it is not easy, but K.S. has succeeded beyond my expectations. Written in the point of view of a human-only, the book explored shape-shifting in a new way. I could not put the book down, and at the end when I had to, I wanted more. On the edge of my seat, mad as hell, and eventually horrified by some of the scenes is what kept me tied to this book until the end. I want to see more from K.S. Lougher.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must read! By Jessica Karbowiak I offered to edit this novella because I believe in both the boldness of the message and the loveliness of the writing. A powerful look at a dystopian world in which animals are considered even less than they are in our own world. Lougher approaches the subject with a scathing condemnation of how power corrupts. The piece is direct and sharp, the characters memorable, and it will leave you reflecting on the perils of BSL through its dark humor and strong storyline.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An intriguing story for any pet lover By Clark Mcguffie K.S. Lougher has written an intricate and multifaceted novella. I was drawn into his story that never went where I thought it was going and amused with his character development. Chock full of loveable (and Hateable) people, mysterious shift changers and of course the pets, this story of a government controlled system for licensing and training pets is a most enjoyable rollercoaster of a read

Yes, the villains are a perennial pulp favorite (Nazis, or the secret power behind the Nazis). Yes, their are plenty of battle scenes ranging from death magics to knife fights (the good guys win in the end). Yes, the terrible twosome of Eliza and Asami continue their banter regardless of situation (both score a couple of notable zingers). Yes, you can count on major characters never ever really dying once and for all (they return and thirst for revenge). Yes, the world as we know is saved once again (until next time with strong hints as to what the impending doom holds). If you accept the standard pulp values going in, you are in for a treat and a great ride. If your tastes run beyond classic pulp stereotypes, this may not be for you. If you have yet to experience classic pulp methods and writing, take a bite and see how it grabs you.As a note, while I received an ARC copy in return for a review, this review is based upon a final copy which I purchased on my own. I wanted to base my review upon a final edit.

Lambright I was worried that the Myth Hunter series might turn too episodic after finishing the first three books. Those fears were assuaged by this entry in the series. Elisa Hill and company get back to the overarching plotline that started in the first book, and it was really exciting to see the threads that had been woven in the books so far come together into the overall narrative of the series. We get a lot of interesting tidbits that point toward an even bigger crescendo coming in the future. The return of some characters from previous books was a huge plus for me, and I really liked the direction the series looks like it'll be taking from here! Definitely the best book of the series so far!

As with all his books, there are plenty of twists, plenty of action and memorable characters. I am so glad I stumbled upon his stories. It has lead to many hours of fun reading. Can't wait for the next installment in this series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A quick and interesting read. By DJD I chose this book because I could enjoy a Special Ops adventure without having to endure curse words every two or three sentences and the Lord's name being used in vain. As I read on I realized this was for young people not necessarily for adults. I found the plot and main character to be very interesting. The only problem I saw was the set up for the book. i've never come across that before. Its like the proof reader made the changes and no one ever set up the book for printing. Still will read more of Mr. Patrick's books and recommend them to those who don't have to curse every breath. By the way I am a female retired Police Officer with 24 1/2 years of service including working in the Emerency Response Unit.

Walter is a person with Cystic Fibrosis. This book is the slightly edited version of the blog he maintained whilst walking 900 kilometers across Spain, doing the El Camino de Santiago de Compostella. Also known as the Way of St James he called the walk the Way of CF and with his small team of friends collected $10k for CF as well as inspiring countless people along the way.

  • Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (French: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers: Tour du monde sous-marin, literally Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas: An Underwater Tour of the World) is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. The novel was originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's periodical, the Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation. The deluxe illustrated edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou. The book was highly acclaimed when released and still is now; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The description of Nemo's ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Thus, the book has been able to age well because of its scientific theories, unlike some of Verne's other works, like Journey to the Center of the Earth, which are not scientifically accurate and serve more simply as adventure novels.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea: Illustrated Platinum Edition (Free Audiobook Included), by Jules Verne

From School Library Journal Gr 4-8-Performed in radio theatre style, this audio version is a fine retelling of the Jules Verne classic. The St. Charles Players, composed of four actors, play a variety of roles with hammy gusto, although the dialogue is a bit rushed in the opening sections. This adaptation by Jeff Rack does a good job of capturing the feel of Verne's sprawling epic tale. The story is told by Professor Aronnax, who agrees to investigate a series of attacks by a mysterious sea monster. He joins the crew of the ship Abraham Lincoln. The men encounter what they believe is the monster, but turns out to be a large, state-of-the-art submarine, the Nautilus. Aronnax and a hot tempered harpoonist, Ned Land, are imprisoned on this vessel, captained by the misanthropic recluse, Nemo. Nemo takes them around the world. Verne's descriptions of the underwater world, with its exotic creatures and sunken ships, shine thanks to clear narration and evocative sound effects. As the journey continues, becoming monotonous, the program's midsection sags a bit. It picks up steam again with sequences involving a monstrous octopus and a storm. While not an essential purchase, this is an impressive attempt to adapt a classic.

Review Novel by Jules Verne, first published in French as Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers in 1869-70. It is perhaps the most popular book of his science-fiction series Voyages extraordinaires (1863-1910). Professor Pierre Aronnax, the narrator of the story, boards an American frigate commissioned to investigate a rash of attacks on international shipping by what is thought to be an amphibious monster. The supposed sea creature, which is actually the submarine Nautilus, sinks Aronnax's vessel and imprisons him along with his devoted servant Conseil and Ned Land, a temperamental harpooner. The survivors meet Captain Nemo, an enigmatic misanthrope who leads them on a worldwide, yearlong underwater adventure. The novel is noted for its exotic situations, the technological innovations it describes, and the tense interplay of the three captives and Nemo (who reappears in The Mysterious Island). -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

READ REVIEW FOR ***CORRECT TRANSLATION*** By coolhand There are three significant translations of this book, and amazon's lacklustre book-sorting system creates nothing but chaos when searching for the correct format / translation of this book. I'm here to help!note: (find the version you are looking for with the ISBN numbers I've provided at the bottom of this review, you can just copy and paste them into the amazon search field and hit GO).Here are excerpts from the three most common translations:Paragraph one, translated by Mercier Lewis -THE YEAR 1866 WAS signalized by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and inexplicable phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Not to mention rumors which agitated the maritime population, and excited the public mind, even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited. Merchants, common sailors, captains of vessels, skippers, both of Europe and America, naval officers of all countries, and the governments of several states on the two continents, were deeply interested in the matter.Paragraph one, translated by Walter James Miller and Frederick Paul Walter (1996) -THE YEAR 1866 was marked by a bizarre development, an unexplained and downright inexplicable phenomenon that surely no one has forgotten. Without getting into those rumors that upset civilians in the seaports and deranged the public mind even far inland, it must be said that professional seamen were especially alarmed. Traders, shipowners, captains of vessels, skippers, and master mariners from Europe and America, naval officers from every country, and at their heels the various national governments on these two continents, were all extremely disturbed by the business.Paragraph one, translated by William Butcher -The year 1866 was marked by a strange event, an unexplained and inexplicable occurrence that doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Without mentioning the rumours which agitated the denizens of the ports and whipped up the public's imagination on every continent, seafaring men felt particularly disturbed. The merchants, shipowners, sea-captains, skippers, and master-mariners of Europe and America, the naval officers of every country, and eventually the various nationals governments on both continents--all became extremely worried about this matter.------------------------------------------------------------------------------WHAT a difference! And who to trust? From wikipedia:"Many of Mercier's errors were corrected in a from-the-ground-up re-examination of the sources and an entirely new translation by Walter James Miller and Frederick Paul Walter."So, the modern translation to seek is either the Walter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walter edition, or the William Butcher edition, depending on your preference for the above excerpts.------------------------------------------------------------------------------And here is how to find them:USA - amazon.comWalter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walterkindle edition ASIN: B004DNWRPQpaper edition ISBN:1440414262William Butcherkindle edition ASIN: (appears to be unavailable at the moment)paper edition ISBN: 0199539278------------------------------------------------------------------------------UK - amazon.co.ukWalter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walterkindle edition ASIN: B00BIFLLV8 or B00BSK24HIpaper edition ISBN: 1438446640William Butcherkindle edition ASIN: (appears to be unavailable at the moment)paper edition ISBN: 0199539278

83 of 85 people found the following review helpful. DREADFUL TRANSLATION, UNRELIABLE NOTES By F. P. Walter A sorry example of the laziness and irresponsibility of many trade editors today -- and it's especially shameful in a publication targeted to students and youngsters.First, the basic text is dreadful: though unidentified, it's the long-discredited translation signed by "Mercier Lewis" and rushed into print in 1872 by the London firm of Sampson, Low. As modern scholars have documented on numerous occasions, Verne's original French was politically censored, drastically abridged, couched in stilted Victorian prose, and riddled with hundreds of inane translating errors. Its clunky, antiquated English is something no American student could possibly enjoy ("I own my heart beat," says the narrator, who actually means, "I admit my heart was pounding"). As for the translating blunders, some are asinine beyond belief -- Verne's characters start a fire with a lentil (Verne: lens) . . . loosen bolts with a key (Verne: wrench) . . . and claim iron is lighter than water (Verne: the opposite, of course). Are these obscure facts? Anything but. Over the past four decades, this translation's inadequacy has been bemoaned repeatedly in basic reference works (Taves & Michaluk's JULES VERNE ENCYCLOPEDIA), online (the Jules Verne Forum at jv.gilead.org.il), and in readily available MODERN translations of this novel (e.g., the paperback editions from Signet, Oxford, and the U.S. Naval Institute). What's more, not only has Simon & Schuster's current editorial staff shirked the most rudimentary homework, they're apparently too lazy even to double-check their OWN publishing files: as long ago as 1966, S & S issued a revised edition of the Mercier Lewis translation; they hired NYU expert Walter James Miller to correct and reword Lewis's text -- which, in a specially written preface, Miller denounced as a "botched up translation . . . slashed and slapdash." Lewis's renderings, he said, "bristle with technical errors and omit whole passages vital to the technical integrity, the character development, even the humor of the story."In short, Simon & Schuster could easily have reprinted their own 1966 version, not ideal but vastly better than Lewis's original. Or, alternatively, they could have reprinted either of the other two English translations in the public domain, both superior in accuracy and completeness. But, these days, indolence and ignorance apparently rule in the halls of S & S.So, though this Enriched Classics series boasts on its back covers about its "practical scholarship," the said scholarship, not surprisingly, often works out to be dismally unreliable. The "helpful notes" and "insightful commentary" can range from the useless to the ridiculous. On p. 425, the explanatory notes can only tell us that such sea creatures as tubipores, gorgones, and spondyles are "various kinds of marine life." Big help. (They're corals, sea fans, and oysters, folks.) On the other hand, when the notes attempt more, they're often worse: on p. 426, for instance, I was amazed to learn that porphitae and asterophytons are "igneous outcrops." Nooo!!! These aren't rocks, people, they're animals! (Jellyfish and starfish, for Lord's sake.)If you're as astonished as I am that such bluff and nonsense is being palmed off on our kids as "scholarship," write S & S this week.Meantime, what edition of 20,000 LEAGUES should you acquire? First, in addition to this Enriched Classics version, also avoid those other student editions (!) published by Scholastic, Tor, and Apple -- they don't identify it either, but they all blindly reprint this same hopeless 1872 Mercier Lewis translation. Fortunately, however, there are four sound paperback texts of 20,000 LEAGUES, all readily available, all immeasurably superior in accuracy, completeness, and readablility. For general readers the Bonner (Bantam) and Brunetti (Signet) translations are both worthwhile. For readers wanting an annotated edition, there are two good ones: Butcher's (Oxford), which is strong on the novel's genesis and manuscript record, and Miller's own illustrated retranslation (U.S. Naval Institute), which is strong on the marine biology -- and on which I myself collaborated. All are competitively priced, so there's no need to settle for something inferior.By the way, the above-cited deficiencies may well be typical of this Enriched Classics collection as a whole -- I note that their edition of Dumas' MONTE CRISTO also features a seriously inadequate text. Students, parents, and teachers are warned to proceed with caution vis-à-vis the entire series.

512 of 560 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy this book! By J. M. Margot If you're going to read one of the great classics of literature-and you should-don't pick up this edition. It is a reprint of a version that dates back to the 1870s and was exposed more than 40 years ago for cutting nearly one-quarter of Verne's story and mistranslating much of the remainder. Its reappearance in this edition is all the more amazing considering Tor's status as a leading science fiction publisher, and the company's willingness to perpetrate this fraud on is many readers is truly stunning. If you want to truly get to know Verne's novel, pick up the elegant Naval Institute Press edition, in a modern, complete, updated translation, with commentary by the leading American Verne expert today, Walter James Miller. That book also comes with many of the artistic engravings that illustrated the original French first edition (no illustrations are to be found in the B&N Mercier reprint). Less attractive but more academic is the Oxford Classics version of Twenty Thousand Leagues. This review is posted on behalf of the North American Jules Verne Society by Jean-Michel Margot, president NAJVS.
