An Account of Egypt, by Herodotus

About the Author Herodotus was a Greek historian who was born in Halicarnassus, in Asia Minor, in the fifth century B.C. Called the Father of History, he wrote the first comprehensive attempt at secular narrative history, long considered the starting point of Western historical writing. The focus of his Histories is the Persian Wars, but he includes fascinating digressions on the histories of Bablyon, Egypt, and Thrace, as well as studies of the pyramids and various historical events. He was the first writer to evaluate historical, geographical, and archaeological material critically.

The original historian By Amazon Customer This book offers an amazing glimpse into how a historian thought and wrote when there was no prior example of this profession. Herodotus writes with great detail, and is always careful to point out what he saw himself vs. what he was told by others. So we have a dual insight, from reading this, into both the history of Egypt but also how someone thought about history and society 2400 years ago. The language is a bit hard to follow at times because of the style as well as the many references to old units of measurement, but this is well worth making the effort.

It's remarkable how even then, Egypt was so ancient.I didn't realize it was believed by some that the Greek gods were the Egyptian gods renamed. Herodotus had interesting views on this, the Illiad and Homer and what he saw in Egypt. He provides tons of detail (sometimes too many) on much of Egyptian history, stories, habits, embalming and animals. If you have any interest in history, give this is a try. Slightly over 1000 locations. Suggest only for older teenagers and up.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Egypt, From Cheops to the Achaemenid Empire. A Preface to The Greco-Persian Wars. By M. DeKalb Translated by GC Macaulay we are given Herodotus’ recount of his adventures through Egypt. The father of history herein tells us about the climate, geography, religion, society and people who inhabit Egypt. He also is inclined to paint a whole historical backdrop for the lands struggles and changes of power and leader, rules, practices, cultural aesthetics and accomplishments. Very confusing at times, due to the sheer number of peoples (their cultural classifications and relationships) and the geographical explanations which I couldn’t imaging (so I had to look at old maps) the most important and memorable items came to me through description of the people and practices, and though important – not so much through geographical references, which the work is wont to have a billion.Having lived during the 5th Century BC (484-425BC) and writing this work ~440BC, Herodotus has been mostly renowned as the most accurate historian of his time, and in this work he attempts to cover some of the basic tenants of Egyptian life. It is important to remember that this tiny little book (or short, if you’re reading it on Kindle) sets the tone for a much larger historical context, both before Herodotus visited and definitely afterward as we witness at the close of the work the beginning of the Acheamenid (Persian) rule in Egypt. An Account of Egypt is Herodotus’ second book in his histories, titled ‘Euterpe’. When the work is not acting as a source of descriptive information, there are actually a few comical moments as it regards the Egyptian brazenness and crude sense of honest humor. Despite my own struggles in understanding the entirety of the work, due primarily to geographic unfamiliarity, it was an altogether interesting and occasionally fun read as it regards an abbreviated history of Egypt at its beginning. It is important to remember that this tiny little book (or short, if you’re reading it on Kindle) sets the tone for a much larger historical context, both before Herodotus visited and definitely afterward, as we witness at the close of the work the beginning of the Achaemenid (Persian) rule in Egypt.Notes / SPOILERS:Egyptian priests felt they were the first group of people to accurately divide the calendar into 12 months each with 30 days and 5 inculcated days to ensure the seasons begin and end roughly where they should by the calendar.Much attention is paid to the Nile, both as a geographical barrier and as a natural marvel (recall it travels north). Of its divisions: ‘Pelusian mouth’ (eastwardly), Canobic mouth (westward) and the Sebennytic mouth which courses straight through the delta. This mouth is then divided into two others: Saitic and the Mendesian mouth. Also mentioned are two other, man-made, mouths.Humorously, Herodotus details the ‘Deserters’ of Psammetichos, warriors who were out posted and never saw reprieve. When attempted to be convinced not to abandon their people and join the Ethiopians, one of their rank states as he ‘pointed to his privy member’ – ‘that wherever this was, there would they have both children and wives.’ (247)Culturally, it is the women who pervade the market place and the men whom stay at home and weave, it is the men who represent both male & female divinity, Egyptian priests were the only whom wore their heads shaved as opposed to their hair long, the Egyptians are one of only a few whom originally practices circumcision, and they were the foremost in reading and writing left to right so that they might carry the hand rightward. The Egyptians strongly disliked the Hellenes (anybody of Greek decent), in fact, after any sacrifice they would take the head of the animal, which was weighted down with Egyptian sins, wrong-doing and curses and attempt to sell it at market to a Hellene. If there were no Hellene to sell it to, they would cast the head into the river.Regarding the Gods: only Isis and Osiris were reverently worshipped by the collective Egyptian populous. Of the Gods, there were originally eight, then were added another 12. So revered were some Gods, in this particular case – Pan, that Herodotus states ‘in my lifetime there happened in that district this marvel, that is to say a he-goat had intercourse with a woman publicly, and this was so done that all men might have evidenced of it.’ (389) Herodotus also mentions Homer and Hesiod, who proceeded him by 400 years and makes note of, respectively, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘The Theogeny’.The Dionysian festivals were celebration of the phallus. According to Herodotus, Melampus ‘set forth to the Hellenes the name of Dionysus and the manner of sacrifice and the procession of the phallus.’ (407)Animals were revered with their geographical importance. There were caretakers specified for the creatures and they collected money for its food in an interesting fashion – a father would shave a part of his sons head, if not the whole, and would then have the resultant mass of hair weighted and would then pay that amount in silver talent. The exchange would then allow the caretaker to purchase that much in food for the creatures under their care. Herodotus alludes to the Phoenix, which he states ‘I did not myself see except in painting, for in truth he comes to them very rarely, at intervals, as the people of Heliopolis say, of five hundred years.’ (547)Herodotus details the three types of embalming; this dependent upon what one could afford to pay for the service. At the high end there was removal of the brain through the nostrils and disembowelment, then a 70 day soak in nitron before being wrapped in clean linen. The middle road saw the corpse injected with cedar oil which when drained brought with it the liquefied innards. The body then was soaked in nitron for 70 days before being remitted to the individual’s family. The least expensive means of mummification was to clean out the innards by means of purge, putting the body in nitron and then, again, remitting it back to the family. Deceased women who were deemed good-looking or of a higher status were kept by their family for at least 4 days to prevent them from being sexually violated by embalmers.Herodotus also relays the leaders of Egypt, having started with Sesostris he recounts a comical story about he and his army establishing pillars which state something akin to ‘I have taken this land with my own hands.’, only when the enemies did not fight back or were easily overtaken he accompanied this phrase with a pictograph of the female genetalia. His unwarlike son, Pheros, succeeded him. Then there are the kings which now have stories surrounding them, and have been deemed mostly fictitious, embellished or altered in some fashion inconsistent with what is currently accepted:Proteus (fictitious) – the ‘old man of the sea’ whom kept Menelaus away from Helen after the battle of Troy (‘The Odyssey’).Rhampsinitos (believed to be fictitious) – who was robbed by two brothers, one who was caught in a snare and beseeched his brother to cut his head off so that he couldn’t be identified and the other was pardoned after removing his brother’s body, secretly, from public display.Cheops (Khufu, ~2566BC) – portrayed negatively and said to have shut up all of the religious temples to worship and then made the Egyptians to build the Great Pyramids of Giza.Next mentioned are: Cephren (~2570BC) then Mykerinos, Anysis, then the Ethiopian Sabacos (~707BC), Sethos. And it is mentioned that the last God amongst the Egyptians was Oros, the son of Osiris, after he had deposed Typhon (or Set), and in 11,340 years there had not been a God amongst them since. (1075) Refusing to be without rule the land was divided into 12 segments, each with their own king until Psammeticos drank from a bronze cup (his helmet) and was ousted from the land for fear that he would become the sole ruler of Egypt based upon a prophecy. Psammetichos (Psamtik I, ~610BC) became King, was then succeeded by his son, Necos (~595BC), his son Psammis (Psamtik II, ~589BC), and his son Apries (~570BC) and his son Amasis (~526) before the dictation leaves off upon Psamtik III (~525)– of who’s reign Herodotus’ work would be a fantastic recount if Psamtik III hadn’t ruled a mere six months. The position at the time of this work, I presume is held by the Persian – Cambysis II and represents Achaemenid Egypt, and recall: the histories of Herodotus conclude in the Battle of Mycale, as the Greco Empire squared off against Xerexs and the Persian Empire. One can clearly see that this historical progressing is a bit messy – filled with fictions and half-truths, missing now accepted Kings and Pharoahs and certainly unsure where to draw a line between the believable and the fantastic.

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.Jim Gough s distinctive voice is well known in the Southwest through his hundreds of commercials and radio shows. He has also appeared in such feature films as "Urban Cowboy, Places in the Heart", and "JFK". A native of Austin, Texas, he can also be found entertaining with his western swing band, the Cosmopolitan Cowboys.

I found the main characters to be beliveable and connected to another time when men were men and ethics were uncompromisable.Good read.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Texas Rangers Ride! By Charles Wheeler Written earlier in his career, and in first person, this story about the Texas Rangers is typical "western" material. Having said that, I by no means mean this is inferior stuff, but you can see, if you are a devotee of Zane Grey that this book was a model for many of the more famous works that came later, making him famous. Many of his books are interconnected with scenes and prologues that are in other stories--provided you have read them all, and have a good memory. The one thing Zane Grey did not do well, in my opinion, is tell a fiction story well in 1st person. His fishing books, and camp and trail books are superbly told this way, but his fiction lacks something when he uses this literary device. This is still a good enough book to buy and read, so if you don't have it, get it, and enjoy.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Zane Grey Renewed By Wm. Williams I am a very senior citizen, so it's been many, many years since I read any of Zane Grey's books. When I saw this listed at Amazon for my Kindle, my mind reversed, and I remembered I loved those books when I was a youngster. Now I am happy I did. The book is extremely well written, along the line of McMurtry. The descriptiveness of people, scenes and actions was worth the few hours I spent reading it. I'll go on soon reading some more Zane Gray novels and really enjoy them.

Enjoy a thoughtful, rural, and down-to-earth portrait of Maryland s Chesapeake Bay as seen by an avid fly fisherman. From isolated tidal rivers to unexpected spots beneath highway overpasses, each of the 12 stories, organized by the month of the year, offers a unique view of this diverse fishery with the straightforward sensitivity of an old country song. Along with a thorough examination of the fishery, read about struggles with the economic difficulty of creating a home on Maryland s Eastern Shore; consider an elegy for a faithful truck; and find an unexpected winter redemption in a pawnshop. Each chapter includes wood cut prints by Danielle Spradley and the vintage photography of A. Aubrey Bodine. The stories are punctuated with old wives tales and family recipes. All good fishing yarns provide anglers with insight and useful information, but these stories extend past the fishery of the Chesapeake Bay and into our daily lives.

Great, witty book with small town charm By Amazon Customer Fishing with your dad, a summer romance and a goodbye to a beloved truck, all takes place on the chesapeake bay. The author recalls fishing through 12 months of the year, mixing in detailed fly fishing stories with thoughts on life, seafood recipes and random thoughts that only solitude (or drugs) brings. At times, the detail into specific lures and fishing techniques is a bit much for non-fisherman, but these are few and far between. In addition to the descriptions of the scenic Chesapeake, which is well written, you are brought into the highs of catching fish with ease and the lows of getting skunked and sleeping on cold ground. Overall, a good book for those who love the outdoors, the Chesapeake bay and small town fishing.

The author's writing feels poetic as he keeps your interest while telling a story for each month. It's also very clever how it's set up like an old Farmer's Almanac. The recipes are a nice bonus. I'm from Maryland so it's special to me in that way, but you don't have to be from that area of the country to enjoy this book.

Some reasons because I'm a fellow fly fisherman in the same haunts described in the book, but each monthly story whether fishing or not kept my rapt interest. Each story is at a different stage of the authors life, but not chronological. One reason to keep reading is to try to learn how the authors life turns out. I liked it.

Miles Callahan is the lead singer of TornPieces and a lead cop on the Emergency Task Force in Toronto, Canada. He is seriously injured during a drug bust that goes wrong, in which he loses his best friend, Sgt. Ed "Eddy" Simmons. Preslie Summers is an ICU nurse at the main hospital in Toronto. Her best friend, Vikki knows of Preslie's love of cops and has her assigned to room 325, Miles' room. Miles is married at this time, but learns that his marriage is in jeopardy during this time. Preslie broke up with boyfriend David six months ago, after he almost hit her. He acted like he was fine with the split, but now she fears for life. Will Angie and Miles get a divorce? Will Miles and Preslie get to know one another? What is going to happen with David? I don't want to give any spoilers, but I promise you won't be disappointed by reading this book!! You will find laughter, tears, suspense, love, friendship and a whole lot more in this book!! I can't wait to read the next book in this series!!

Falling Deep into You, her new release, exceeded my already high expectations. Here is my honest opinion of her work. The beginning of the book instantly grabbed my attention. There is nothing worse than a story that starts off slowly, and I am honestly one to stop reading after a page or two. This is certainly not the case. From the first sentence, Kelly commanded me to read on, and I was eager to oblige. The circumstances surrounding how Miles and Preslie meet are less than pleasant, which makes how they came together even sweeter.I had several moments where I was blown away. Kelly did a wonderful job keeping me on the edge of my seat. Looking back on it, I’m annoyed that I couldn’t pick up the hints she dropped, but that just means that Kelly went above and beyond her job. This is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it. Whether this is your first taste of Terra Kelly’s work or you’re a huge fan, you’ll fall in deep, too.

The heartbreak they go through separately just seems to sew them together jointly. There are twists and turns throughout the book, and the emotions run high, but there's also times (only a few) that you can see certain things happening. Terra Kelly has a way with words, that keeps you entertained and on edge for hours. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

  • Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism. Originally published as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century.

I was dragged kicking and screaming to its pages and read it only because I did not want to flunk my English Literature class. I was riveted from the first page, right up to the last paragraph. It is quite simply Conrad's finest book, (yes, I read his other books after this one.) However be aware, this is not everyone's cup of tea. There will be some people who will read this book and think, "Oh God, you have to be kidding!" However if you can get passed this mentality then you are in for a real literary treat. The story is simple enough, a young Englishman; Marlow (this character appears in Conrad's story "Youth") goes out to Africa to seek his fortune. He is at first idealistic, and full of himself. However he quickly realises that Africa is full of petty bureaucrats who have no idea how to make use of this dark jewel they have acquired. Like Colonists before them, they proceed to ravage and plunder the land of its natural resources. Enter Kurtz, an Ivory Trader who has gone Native. He has become a Renegade, living with his Black mistress in the heart of Africa's interior; systematically turning his back on his supposed civilised self.Marlow meets Kurtz after an eventful trip up the Congo and finds himself curiously attracted to this strange man who is [very ill], and obviously going insane. Kurtz in turn is an embarrassment to his employers who would rather see him dead than returned to "civilization." Of course this is unspoken, and the hypocrisy of human natures sticks out like a sore thumb in this novel, especially as Kurtz is one of the best Ivory Traders on the Congo route.Marlow struggles to understand Kurtz and what makes him tick, but he only touches the surface of a man who can live in neither the Black or White world comfortably. He has been [harmed] by both worlds and therefore he is cursed. Heart of Darkness has many facets; it is a story about Imperialism, racism, and the darkness of human nature. Conrad purposely leaves the ending open to interpretation. ...This is a book that will make you think, make you want to it re-read again and again in case you have missed anything. There are also some genuinely funny moments in the book such as the Doctor who measures skulls for a hobby and the pompous Trading Post clerk who teaches his Black maid to starch his clothes. This edition, (Dover Thrift) is well worth getting as well, as it is [inexpensive] and cheerful and it definitely won't break the bank money wise.

How To Make a 75 Page Story Into a 400 Page Book By Bucherwurm I would like to address myself specifically to the Norton Critical Edition of this book. The difficulty that many readers face when they pick up a classic, pre-twentieth century novel is that they are not conversant with the history of the times in which it was written. Heart of Darkness can be enjoyed purely as a well written novella, but then you miss so much of what Conrad is trying to say not only regarding the thin veneer of man's social persona (ala Lord of the Flies) but about the evils of 19th century imperialism. What is the story of Colonialism? Do Conrad's derogatory remarks about Blacks make him a bigot? What were Conrad's overall views on life? What were Conrad's personal experiences in the Congo? What did readers think of Heart of Darkness when it was written, and what do the critics think of it today? The Norton Critical Edition gives you 325 extra pages of material written by Conrad and others that provide answers to the above questions. You don't have to read all of these many articles, of course, but a good sampling of them will make your immersion in this famous story all the more enjoyable and meaningful. This is a story that everyone should read, and the Norton Critical Edition provides the best format for the reading experience.

142 of 156 people found the following review helpful. The title has become a cliche; the book is as fresh as ever By hugh riminton No-one seriously interested in English literature can afford not to read this book. As a central device, the parallel journey into the heart of Africa and the dark centre of the human experience, remains as powerful as ever. The writing in the opening pages, depicting the men and the Thames and the wide possibilities that rise with every outgoing tide, remain as evocative as anything in English. Conrad's subject is barbarity, a theme as relevant now as then. His dark view of the colonial instinct also stands as a warning at this very hour. With "Lord Jim" a thicker, but in many ways easier book to read, Conrad poses the great existential question that was to dominate personal politics throughout the 20th Century, the taking of personal responsibility, the search for personal redemption - as one character puts it: "How to be - Ach! How to be?" With "Heart of Darkness" he articulates what Michael Ignatieff has described as "the seductiveness of moral disgust." Faced with the darkness around him, the character Kurtz advises "exterminate the brutes." His final, dread epiphany, his message from the heart of his own darkness "The Horror! The Horror!" is as chilling now as it was a century ago - a century that has seen more horror than even Conrad could have imagined.

Truly a treasure for being Indie published By Bonnie I bought this book a while ago and I am only now just getting around to reviewing it. This novel is amazing!! Truly a treasure for being Indie published. This book is done right from the cover, to the writing, and the editing. The world building is remarkable and the characters are truly the main highlight. I loved them and hated them and that can only mean one thing, great writing. The story is fluid, the plot clear, and the journey just beginning with this first book from a superb new author. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to get my hands on the second one to find out what happens next!

It's easy to get stuck in the habits and comforts of our lives. Riesa shares her "road trip" and it is both inspiring and deeply moving, but it is also fun. She listened carefully and grew immensely, and in sharing it with readers, she helps each of us remember that there is a road trip beckoning for each of us. Thank you, Riesa!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it is no easy matter for them By Norman S. Goldner Riesa J. Harris’s, “The Year of Becoming Gracia; A Necessary Adventure Exploring Dying, Living and Healing,” is remarkable in its combination of the recounting of the difficult personal journey of self-discovery by a sixty-year old woman who also has a keen eye for the excesses in our culture when it comes to materialism, and the flaws in our medical and agricultural institutions. Harris’s own personal struggles are front and center in her recounting of her journey from Colorado to her origins in California during which she seeks to answer basic questions about herself in the universe. She often references her displeasure at being taken advantage of and details how this happens to her on her journey. However, I’m left with the impression that while she’s frank about her struggles, her honesty makes her an unusual and formidable person. And a “non-ordinary” journey it is when she packs her car with her new age essentials including crystals, food, supplements, drum and camping gear and sets out in the general but wandering direction of Ventura. While she is “alone” on the road one has to be impressed with number and variety of people Riesa knows and meets and how they welcome her into their homes and lives. Riesa finds her way to a spiritual spa that includes nudity, something she is very uncomfortable with but ends up appreciating for reasons that will surprise you. This is but one of a long series adventures and misadventures that you wouldn’t expect of a college educated otherwise conservative but somewhat self-designated naïve woman. On this “learning-as-you-go” trip which is beset by her past but which shows one how to be open to the present in order to discover the future one is desirous of, Riesa fluctuates between someone with the attributes of a guileless child to a member of the cognoscenti. Riesa leads others to deep understandings through a unique combination of her own wisdom and frailties. She is a beneficiary of her own struggles and seeks to assist the reader in attaining their own insights and evolution. As a professor (psychology and sociology) I have given workshops about dying and death to medical personnel. It is no secret that while doctors, nurses and hospice workers are frequent observers and administer to the difficult deaths of others, it is no easy matter for them. Those who face the deaths of others--professionals, caregivers, and the rest of us--would do well to follow Riesa into the dying process of her friends’ loved ones and to those confined to a nursing home. Her perspective is unusual and highly personal. She administers Reiki and other physical, emotional, social, and spiritual palliatives those who are going through the process of ending their earth walk while elevating the family to a seminal and crucial role in the death process. When you read the book you may, as I did, come to wish that a “Riesa” would share her love, skills, and caring with you and your family when you or a loved one is on the way out. Her approach is humanistic, unique, open, and soothing as she utilizes a number of techniques and disciplines (most of which the ordinary person has never heard of) in making her ‘clients’ remaining life as rich and comfortable as possible. The theme of this book involves the personal challenges and growth of the author but there is gold to be mined if you are intent on your own path towards grace and gratitude. The author makes no effort to make her views yours; instead she reveals a process by which you can discover your own truths.Norman Goldner, PhD3585 Warwick DriveRochester Hills, MI 48309248 892 2433

A Healer Shares Her Holistic Journey By Cynthia Olsen Author This book drew me in because Riesa's story is filled with her spiritual travels and lessons for many of us who are seekers and wish to elevate our lives to benefit, guide and embrace our living each moment of our life. The author speaks her brutally honest truths about her past, her insecurities and her courage to push on. She has many healing practices which give her the perfect opportunities to assist others along their path. I found her journey familiar as well as dynamic. There are times finances were slim and she pushed on and managed to complete her journey from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California and places in between. As a health researcher and author, I picked up more information to add to my holistic bag. The resources she included, are valuable for the readers to explore on their own.

God's Gospel (Making Him Known), by Jill Nelson

Review "Tackling the difficulty of helping children understand the significance of the cross, Jill Nelson clearly and carefully leads her audience through their plight (the bad news of sin) and the rescue promised in the garden (the good news of salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus). God's Gospel presents the breadth of the gospel by including teaching on the Creator, sin, God's promise, sacrifice, the law, the birth of Jesus, the sufficiency of Christ, the death and payment for sin on the cross, and the resurrection and promise of eternal life to those who repent and believe. By emphasizing key biblical truths written winsomely in a style children can understand, God's Gospel is an excellent primer on the good news of salvation in Christ." --Sally Michael

By Music Teacher God's Gospel is full of Scriptural truths that I want my children to understand. I use the book in our reading time. A great addition to the Making HIM Known series By Danika Cooley God's Gospel presents 25 Bible stories in creative ways to help kids can understand the gospel message contained in the story. By moving from Genesis through the teachings of Christ, Jill Nelson explains the gospel quite well. She ends with a 26th story--an invitation from Christ. I have to say, as one who holds to a confessional theology of salvation (rather than decisional), I was really pleased to see the last chapter include verses about salvation and an explanation of what it means to repent and believe, along with an introspective question and activities, but no direct "pray this prayer and you'll be saved".I found the theology throughout the book to be quite sound. I appreciated the way that Jill Nelson (who was a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years, and now is a curriculum writer and blog director for Children Desiring God) teaches. Every story begins with direct questions to the child, and occasionally a contemporary story. Children are drawn into the narrative, and come away with a deepened understanding of some aspect of the gospel. Each of the 26 chapters in God's Gospel is four pages long. After each story, there is a "Learning to Trust God" section which contains a Bible reading, discussion questions, and an activity. The reading, discussion, and activities are easily incorporated into a family's evening or morning worship time. The stories has a great illustration by Fred Apps, and there are direct quotations from the Bible (ESV) in the text.I really appreciate the fact that the Making HIM Known series takes difficult theological concepts and makes them accessible for children over a short period of time. The books are like little unit studies. They're perfect for families, or as a homeschool devotional. God's Gospel is a great addition to this series.I want to thank P&R Publishing for providing me with a copy of God's Gospel in return for my honest opinion.

Great Tool for Discipleship By Jeanie S We must always put things in the right order, and it is Truth first…the heart is always to be influenced through the understanding –the mind, then the heart, then the will…but God forbid that anyone should think that it ends with the intellect. It starts there, but it goes on. It then moves the heart and finally the man yields his will. He obeys, not grudgingly or unwillingly, but with the whole heart. The Christian life is a glorious perfect life that takes up and captivates the entire personality.Embracing the truth of God and His will is a desire for many Christian parents for their children. This book is a tool to not only embrace that truth but how does that apply where faith can grow. Major parts of the bible from creation to the resurrection is shared in a simple terms that is applicable for a young mind to grasp. With questions, you and your child can discover truth for yourself as you learn more about the Great God that loves you together. Questions like “Why is it important for God to punish sin? These questions can develop critical thinking that can encourage their faith grow deeper. This devotion is rich in theology more so than many adult devotionals. It speaks to you and not above you.Favorite excerpts…You See Adam and Eve-people like you and me-were created to be able to enjoy God’s world in ways that rocks and plants, and animals never could. But as much as Adam and Eve could enjoy all the wonderful things God has made, God knew that these good things could not make Adam and Eve truly happy. What gave Adam and Eve the most happiness at the “super-duper, best party ever” was being in the presence of God himself!Cain and Abel were helpless sinners who could not fix their hearts. Could Dad and Mom help them? No. Only God, who is rich in mercy, could help them. But in order for them to be forgiven, God has decided that sinners must respond to His mercy in the right way. What is the right way? To answer that, we can look at Cain and Abel for an example.A tool for discipleship that reveals the deeper problem of the heart that together will turn our hearts to our greater need for a Savior. I am excited for this book as I will be a grandma in March and just the importance of building a relationship on the good news of the Gospel is something I am looking forward to. I have put the rest of the series on my wish list.A Special Thank You to P & R Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
