Enjoy a thoughtful, rural, and down-to-earth portrait of Maryland s Chesapeake Bay as seen by an avid fly fisherman. From isolated tidal rivers to unexpected spots beneath highway overpasses, each of the 12 stories, organized by the month of the year, offers a unique view of this diverse fishery with the straightforward sensitivity of an old country song. Along with a thorough examination of the fishery, read about struggles with the economic difficulty of creating a home on Maryland s Eastern Shore; consider an elegy for a faithful truck; and find an unexpected winter redemption in a pawnshop. Each chapter includes wood cut prints by Danielle Spradley and the vintage photography of A. Aubrey Bodine. The stories are punctuated with old wives tales and family recipes. All good fishing yarns provide anglers with insight and useful information, but these stories extend past the fishery of the Chesapeake Bay and into our daily lives.

Great, witty book with small town charm By Amazon Customer Fishing with your dad, a summer romance and a goodbye to a beloved truck, all takes place on the chesapeake bay. The author recalls fishing through 12 months of the year, mixing in detailed fly fishing stories with thoughts on life, seafood recipes and random thoughts that only solitude (or drugs) brings. At times, the detail into specific lures and fishing techniques is a bit much for non-fisherman, but these are few and far between. In addition to the descriptions of the scenic Chesapeake, which is well written, you are brought into the highs of catching fish with ease and the lows of getting skunked and sleeping on cold ground. Overall, a good book for those who love the outdoors, the Chesapeake bay and small town fishing.

The author's writing feels poetic as he keeps your interest while telling a story for each month. It's also very clever how it's set up like an old Farmer's Almanac. The recipes are a nice bonus. I'm from Maryland so it's special to me in that way, but you don't have to be from that area of the country to enjoy this book.

Some reasons because I'm a fellow fly fisherman in the same haunts described in the book, but each monthly story whether fishing or not kept my rapt interest. Each story is at a different stage of the authors life, but not chronological. One reason to keep reading is to try to learn how the authors life turns out. I liked it.
