The first novel in the Dreams of Youth Series. "From vindicated actions to twisted hearts, the shooting stars form our destiny." It’s a sickening feeling in ones core when ones life cannot be defined. Dusk Hollow, a young man living on the planet known as Eryu, experiences this first hand. When someone precious to him is taken, Dusk must face the trials and tribulations of that undeniable truth. He will do all that he can to get her back. He will journey through landscapes he could only picture in his head. He will defy the odds against those who wish to crush him. He will deny death. ------- There sits a girl who always gazes at the stars, wishing they would take her someplace far away. Her mother disappears one afternoon and her story unfolds thereafter. Through blank pages and close friends, Essa Starlight begins to understand who she is. She learns sometimes that harsh words are said with good intentions. This is a story where a dream can shape everything. This is a story, where what’s inside matters most.

This is a story of exploration and discovery, both on a personal level as well as on a societal level. The world presented in this book is interesting and more than what it lets on initially. As the story progresses, more and more of the world is introduced to the reader and some strange and yet fantastical elements are revealed that keep the user interested into what more the world can offer. It's a mix of both fantasy and science fiction and written in a way in which the combination keeps you curious and wondering as to how the world actually functions. After finishing the book, there's a bit of a yearning to understand more about the history and details of the world. It's interesting, but this book merely scratches the surface of what the world is.The cast of characters is large. Dozens of names appear throughout the book and quite honestly it got a bit overwhelming at times and as such became a bit difficult keeping track of the characters sometimes. This is especially apparent when the characters are conversing; it feels like sometimes the personalities of some of the characters start to blend together and they lose a bit of their identity. However, each character has their own unique fighting traits and show this off very well when the action gets going. But some of the characters are written in a way that occasionally their actions or words seem a bit forced or cliche and many of them seem like they are more powerful or durable than they should be. However, the author took a somewhat bold direction in writing some of the characters which I can appreciate. The structure of the book is generally fine, but there are a few points where the pacing felt a bit off. There are moments in the book where I felt like I just wanted to know more. Additional details and world building would have fleshed out the story a bit more and build a larger emotional connection with the characters and the events that take place. On the other hand, there are a few points in the book where it seemed to drag on longer than it should have. Overall the writing style isn't perfect, but as the first book released by this author and as the first book in the series, improvements can, and will probably, be made for future releases. In conclusion, this was a fine book to read. If you are interested in fantastical worlds with characters and events shrouded in mysteries, I would recommend this book to you. I didn't have many expectations going in, and despite starting off a bit slow, it ends in a fun way that is surprisingly dark and a bit gruesome. The setting is interesting and one of the stronger aspects of the book. Quite frankly, I'm looking forward to reading the next few entries in the series just to explore more about the world of Eryu that we were introduced in this book.I've waited five years for this book and I think it was worth it. I'm looking forward to the future releases as well.

I felt like the author could have scaled this down big time. The writing seemed amateur - textbook, even. Some grammatical and punctuation errors were present - needs to go through editing a second time or through an editor that will pick up on the issues.

The Samoa Seduction, by Alan L. Moss

About the Author Alan L Moss is a unique and emerging voice in the thriller genre. His published novels spin sophisticated tales of conspiracy, love, sex, revenge, and subterfuge. Two distinguishing features of Alan’s novels are involvement with significant national and international issues and remarkable settings. The Samoa Seduction tells the story of two strong willed individuals haunted by their love for one another while manipulated by a deadly conspiracy. Efforts to head off minimum wage increases and corrupt pharmaceutical company research form the backdrop for this exciting adventure. Exotic settings include locations in the South Pacific’s American Samoa, Hawaii, and New Zealand. This novel draws upon Alan’s experience in American Samoa administering federal wage hearings and getting to know the Samoan people and their lush island of Tutuila. His Ph. D. research capabilities provided entry to the wage and drug issues involved. Alan has been a federal Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Labor, Congressional Fellow in the U.S. Senate for the late Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, and Adjunct Instructor at the University of Virginia's Northern Virginia Center. In 2002, he put his government career aside and moved to the Jersey Shore to pursue his writing. Two previous novels published in 2012 and 2014, Insidious Deception and its sequel, Surviving The Endgame involve conflict in the Middle East and U.S. presidential elections. The Middle East peace plan introduced in Insidious Deception was developed by Dr. Moss through his participation in a Washington, D.C. Dialogue conducted by the Policy Studies Organization of the American Political Science Association. Alan’s non-fiction offerings include Selling-Out America’s Democracy (Praeger 2008) and Employment Opportunity (Prentice-Hall 2000). An entertaining thriller By Bruce King If you're looking for an entertaining light read with a mix of mystery, murder, sex, conspiracy and corruption, I enthusiastically recommend "The Samoa Seduction." Alan Moss has done an excellent job of using his own personal experience to help create a story that not only pulls you in quickly, but, as the plot unfolds, provides interesting insights about politics, policy and the realities of a remote tropical island territory.Without giving too much away, The Samoa Seduction tells the story of a government economist who is committed to public service and who seeks to help the workers of American Samoa by facilitating an increase in the territory's minimum wage. But while he believes the need for an increase to be clear and undeniable, he runs into strong resistance from a local tuna corporation and its allies. Before long, he must wrestle not only with a conspiracy and political corruption but his own personal conflicts between loyalty, love and lust. The Samoa Seduction is told in fragments that bounce back and forth in time. But the writing generally is clear and straightforward. And it is strengthened by the author's obvious knowledge of American Samoa, Washington, and labor policy. Many of the details ring true because they are true.In the interests of full disclosure, Alan Moss is a friend and former colleague of mine. I always knew that, like the lead character, Michael Bloom, he was a serious and dedicated public servant. But "The Samoa Seduction" proves that he also is a talented and compelling writer.

Seduction By Donald Sciarrotta Using the technique of jumping to-and fro in time in order to develop the details of the plot, the author actually moves the story along rapidly with increasing levels of suspense and interest. He incorporates his personal knowledge of Samoan scenery to add realism to the story line.Moss, a former government economist, shows how excessive greed in government and industry can negatively impact lives, and as his characters fall to the temptations of money and lust, he intertwines their individual seductions into Samoan Seduction.

From Moroccan hashish dens to the coffee shops of Amsterdam, The Old Head takes readers along on his 50-year journey as a recreational drug user. Rather than a cautionary tale, however, this is an unabashed celebration of life enhanced by the use of various mind-altering substances. Part travelogue, part memoir, Travels With Mary Jane is actually the story of the birth of the drug culture and its ongoing aftermath as seen through the eyes and mind of an ordinary man who went along for the extraordinary ride. Whether it's a weekend in a Mexican bordello or a couple of months in London during the Swinging Sixties, readers will climb aboard the magic carpet, their tickets punched for a "trip" that started five decades ago and is still traveling on. Stoners will identify with the common cultural history they share with the author, non-users to a colorful world they’ve never known or understood. Rather than the archetypal story of a life ruined by drugs, it is a story of how drugs, particularly cannabis, can enrich one’s everyday experiences and open their mind to new realms of possibilities. And some downright amazing times. An eye-opener for those who do not get high, an affirmation for those that do, Travels With Mary Jane starts with the premise that the high life is the best life and never looks back.

"Travels With Mary Jane" a Refreshing New Look from an Old Head By Amazon Customer Had enough of bios that crow unabashedly about the subject's glorious achievements while debasing the rest of us by comparison? Fed up with sanitized travelogues that paint monuments and the distant past over gritty modern reality like makeup on an old whore? Want no more of fantastic novels that play fast & loose with the reader's suspension of disbelief, and even basic common sense?"Travels W/MJ" provides none of the tried-&-sanctified marketing formulae of the best seller list. The Old Head offers no pretenses about his own majesty. He walks side-by-side with the reader on a guided tour through disparate and contrasting countries and social strata, across a lifetime of historical eras and their impact on the lives of us all, one way or other. TWMJ affords a street-level view of history, politics, the social order, war and peace, crime and honest endeavor, sex and lasting friendship...all expounded and expanded through the prism of a dedicated drug enthusiast's altered state of consciousness. No weasel-worded treachery of a smarmy superior author out to enslave the readers' minds, TWMJ is relentlessly honest. You may disagree, but you will not fail to comprehend. The work is an open and eminently readable odyssey through time, space, and ideas, focusing on what American society was, is, and possibly most important, may become.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it might do some good. A must-read for anyone who has ever gotten ... By J. Russell Peltz Some of us see the world through rose-colored glasses. The Old Head sees the world through the other end of his pipe and what a delightful world he sees. Perhaps he is right, perhaps marijuana should be legalized worldwide. Alcohol is legal. We should sprinkle marijuana over the Middle East; it might do some good. A must-read for anyone who has ever gotten high and a must-read for those who haven't; perhaps they'll learn something.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If only everyone were as open-minded as is the author of this book. By Amazon Reader You don't have to be a pothead (or a "stoner," in the parlance of the book) to really enjoy this fun, breezy, well written book by "The Old Head." It's a shame the author doesn't reveal his real name because he deserves accolades for taking readers on an adventurous, cannabis-filled ride through London, Tangier, Amsterdam, a stint in the US Army, Mexico and more. This book isn't trying to sell you on the benefits of marijuana; rather, it shares the author's life-experiences that happen to include, and are enhanced by, prodigious cannabis use. If you were taught that pot is dangerous and "'bad for you," you should read this book. If you are a dedicated smoker and appreciate thoughtful prose in favor the herb (and other consciousness-altering treats), you should read this book. If you are on the fence over whether pot should be completely decriminalized, you should read this book. If that's not enough, "Travels with Mary Jane" doubles nicely as a travelogue and features interesting takes on art history, music, and some of civilization's oldest cities. It's enjoyable from beginning to end.

Lorillard, have endevored to get much past the first 5 chapters. The woodcut or tin prints are incredibly detailed, each with a world of information to those willing to take the time to study them. Although Mr.Charnay occasionally wonders from his original train of thought, the book is an incredible piece of work, for its time and the effort that went into researching the subject covered. The significance of the signed cover page is the two names mentioned funded his expiditions to Central America.

Candide (Inti Classics): by Voltaire, by Voltaire

Amazon.com Review Political satire doesn't age well, but occasionally a diatribe contains enough art and universal mirth to survive long after its timeliness has passed. Candide is such a book. Penned by that Renaissance man of the Enlightenment, Voltaire, Candide is steeped in the political and philosophical controversies of the 1750s. But for the general reader, the novel's driving principle is clear enough: the idea (endemic in Voltaire's day) that we live in the best of all possible worlds, and apparent folly, misery and strife are actually harbingers of a greater good we cannot perceive, is hogwash.

Telling the tale of the good-natured but star-crossed Candide (think Mr. Magoo armed with deadly force), as he travels the world struggling to be reunited with his love, Lady Cunegonde, the novel smashes such ill-conceived optimism to splinters. Candide's tutor, Dr. Pangloss, is steadfast in his philosophical good cheer, in the face of more and more fantastic misfortune; Candide's other companions always supply good sense in the nick of time. Still, as he demolishes optimism, Voltaire pays tribute to human resilience, and in doing so gives the book a pleasant indomitability common to farce. Says one character, a princess turned one-buttocked hag by unkind Fate: "I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our most melancholy propensities; for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one's very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?"--Michael Gerber

Review Satirical novel published in 1759 that is the best-known work by Voltaire. It is a savage denunciation of metaphysical optimism--as espoused by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz--that reveals a world of horrors and folly. In this philosophical fantasy, naive Candide sees and suffers such misfortune that he ultimately rejects the philosophy of his tutor Doctor Pangloss, who claims that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds." Candide and his companions--Pangloss, his beloved Cunegonde, and his servant Cacambo--display an instinct for survival that provides them hope in an otherwise somber setting. When they all retire together to a simple life on a small farm, they discover that the secret of happiness is "to cultivate one's garden," a practical philosophy that excludes excessive idealism and nebulous metaphysics. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

Delicious Irony Amidst Swift-Like Satire By Donald Mitchell Ever since philosophers began thinking about the meaning of life, a favorite question has been "Why do bad things happen to good people?". In Voltaire's day, this issue was primarily pursued either from the perspective of faith (everything that happens is God's will and must be for Divine purpose) or of reason (What do these events mean to you, as you interpret them subjectively?). Infuriated by the reaction by some members of the church to a horrible loss of life from an earthquake in Lisbon, Voltaire wrote this hard-biting satire of the human condition to explore these questions. Before reading further, let me share a word of caution. This book is filled with human atrocities of the most gruesome sort. Anything that you can imagine could occur in war, an Inquisition, or during piracy happens in this book. If you find such matters distressing (as many will, and more should), this book will be unpleasant reading. You should find another book to read. The book begins as Candide is raised in the household of a minor noble family in Westphalia, where he is educated by Dr. Pangloss, a student of metaphysical questions. Pangloss believes that this is the best of all possible worlds and deeply ingrains that view into his pupil. Candide is buoyed by that thought as he encounters many setbacks in the course of the book as he travels through many parts of Europe, Turkey, and South America. All is well for Candide until he falls in love with the Baron's daughter and is caught kissing her hand by the Baron. The Baron immediately kicks Candide out of the castle (literally on the backside), and Candide's wanderings begin. Think of this as being like expulsion from the Garden of Eden for Adam. Soon the penniless Candide finds himself in the Bulgarian army, and receiving lots of beatings while he learns to drill. The story grows more far-fetched with each subsequent incident. To the casual reader, this exaggeration can seem unnecessary and annoying. It will remind you of the most extreme parts of Swift in Gulliver's Travels and Rabelais in Gargantua and Pantagruel. But subtly, Voltaire is using the exaggeration to lure the reader into making complacent judgments about complacency itself that Voltaire wants to challenge. The result is a deliciously ironical work that undermines complacency at a more fundamental level than I have seen done elsewhere. Basically, Candide challenges any view you have about complacency that is defined in terms of the world-view of those who are complacent.Significant changes of circumstances (good and ill) occur to all of the members of the Baron's household over the course of the story. Throughout, there is much comparing of who has had the worst luck, with much feeling sorry for oneself. That is the surface story. Voltaire is, however, a master of misdirection. Beneath the surface, Voltaire has another purpose for the book. He also wants to expose the reader to questioning the many bad habits that people have that make matters worse for everyone. The major themes of these undercurrents are (1) competing rather than to cooperating, (2) employing inhumane means to accomplish worldly (and many spiritual) ends, (3) following expected rules of behavior to show one's superiority over others that harm and degrade others, (4) focusing on money and power rather than creating rich human relationships, (5) hypocritical behavior, and (6) pursuing ends that society approves of rather than ends that please oneself.By the end of the story, the focus shifts again to a totally different question: How can humans achieve happiness? Then, you have to reassess what you thought about the book and what was going on in Voltaire's story. Many readers will choose to reread the book to better capture Voltaire's perspective on that final question, having been surprised by it.Candide is one of my favorite books because it treats important philosophical questions in such an unusual way. Such unaccustomed matching of treatment and subject matters leaves an indelible impression that normal philosophical arguments can never match. Voltaire also has an amazing imagination. Few could concoct such a story (even by using illegal substances to stimulate the subconscious mind). I constantly find myself wondering what he will come up with next. The story is so absurd that it penetrates the consciousness at a very fundamental level, almost like doing improvisation. In so doing, Voltaire taps into that feeling of "what else can happen?" that overcomes us when we are at our most pessimistic. So, gradually you will find yourself identifying with the story -- even though nothing like this could ever happen to you. Like a good horror story, you are also relieved that you can read about others' troubles and can put your own into perspective. This last point is the fundamental humanity of the story. You see what a wonderful thing a kind word, a meal, or a helping hand can be. That will probably inspire you to offer those empathic actions more often. After you have finished Candide, I suggest that you ask yourself where complacency about your life and circumstances is costing you and those you care about the potential for more health, happiness, peace, and prosperity. Then take Voltaire's solution, and look around you for those who enjoy the most of those four wonderful attributes. What do those people think and do differently from you?

Some Candides Are Better Than Others By Bucherwurm No the story doesn't change from edition to edition, but the supplementary material provided does change. Candide isn't just some hectic adventure story. It really fails as literature in this regard, and certainly Voltaire's purpose was not to make you chuckle while you whiled away a few empty hours. He would weep to think that you missed out on what he was really trying to tell you. Rest easy. I am not going to launch into a stuffy monologue on Leibnitz and 18th century French Catholicism, but in essence you should know that this is the essence of the story. The philosopher Leibnitz (who with Isaac Newton independently invented Calculus) explained the existence of evil in the world thusly: God, in his infinite wisdom, thought of all possible worlds that he could create, and he chose this one; therefore this must be the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire was also continually chastising the Catholic Church for it's lack of tolerance of other beliefs, and for its aristocratic pomp.Enter now the Norton Critical Edition of Candide. This book presents the 75 page story along with 130 additional pages of various articles and essays on the times in which it was written; commentary by Voltaire and by his contemporaries; and critiques of the story by modern writers. Sure there are always a few dull, academic essays making their mandatory appearance in a book like this, but my suggestion is just to skip them. After all there are a lot of them to choose from.Learn the story behind the story so to speak. After all it is the background of Candide that makes Candide the forceful satire that it is.

By A Customer It is probably fair to say that there is no book that is quite like Voltaire's 'Candide'. This is a venomous satire of the 'Optimistic' philosophy and outlook of enlightenment thinkers such as Leibniz and Alexander Pope. As such, it is served well by the unique combination of repeated brutality and a deft, light touch. If that last comment doesn't make sense, then you'll just have to READ THE BOOK.At a mere 144 pages (in this edition), this is a classic that is a breeze to read. As to the charge that this book is too "violent" or "in bad taste", I would only ask you to remember that Voltaire was furious that learned members of a "civilized" society (like Leibniz, Pope, and even Rousseau)could claim that the apparent senseless violence and mayhem wrought by disasters, war, disease, man's cruelty, etc. was actually only a part of some 'greater good' - after all, God (being perfect) could not 'logically' created anything but the 'best of all possible' universes.Voltaire's touch is so light and understated that I defy anyone to write anything that contains a third of the violence in 'Candide' and still manages to read as breezily and somehow be genuinely funny. But dark satire must be funny - otherwise it lapses into pedantry.Read it - even if you do not like it, I guarantee you that it will disturb you and make you think. And for that, we can thank Voltaire.

This is the story of how my wife and I began with our first RV trailer. The story captures our enjoyment in the processes and the work we did on our used camping trailer. The book explains that we did a lot of work. We also made some basic mistakes - especially in the purchase of the trailer. But please don’t let those mistakes and the hard work confuse the reader. We throughly enjoyed the process of bringing this trailer back from a run down state.

From the Kalahari to the Limpopo, from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park, and from the Karoo to the Garden Route, this book follows the author's journey through 12 national parks in South Africa, meeting fascinating people and having exciting adventures. This is no dry catalogue of the topography and ecology of South Africa's national parks, no boring list of their facilities. Instead, it's a dynamic string of experiences both inside and outside the parks. On the menu are activities, people, cultural heritage and food, all peppered with interesting facts and liberally spiced with gentle humour. "This is a delicious book. It evokes things we love about the country around us. It conjures up places that soothe the soul. Its huge fault is that ... well, people are going to read it. And then where will all our best-kept secrets be?" (Denis Beckett, author and TV presenter) The book has two aims. The first is to inform and entertain the average armchair traveller who wants to live vicariously. That’s why you’ll find answers to some intriguing questions, such as why your partner is potentially more dangerous than a black mamba, why hippos are vegetarians and vultures need a spin doctor, and why a barnacle has a penis that’s 20 times longer than its body. The second aim is to provide inspiration and practical ideas for people who want to get up out of their armchairs to visit South Africa and do things for themselves. There are nearly 300 ideas to choose from, so almost everyone should find at least a handful to wrap a holiday around – where to catch up on some cultural history, enjoy good food or a relaxing sundowner, and of course some more extreme adventures like paragliding or skydiving. And lots of stuff in between – a horse trail, a wilderness hike among lions, elephants and creepy crawlies, a Tarzan-and-Jane swing among the treetops, a 4x4 trail, even a walk in the Kalahari desert with a San tracker who has a gazillion-gigabyte memory of fascinating stuff. "Part nature guide, part travelogue, it can be read like a story book because Reid writes in a chatty and accessible way. Her candour and self-deprecating humour is disarming. A well-priced, helpful, fun guide for adventurous spirits." (Sawubona magazine) "Through the characters she meets, Reid endeavours to turn her readers into travellers, soaking up the wisdom and outlook of people in different settings. Get your own copy of this highly entertaining book. It’s packed with ‘joy diary moments’." (Getaway magazine)

An inspiring and delightful visit to great places By Janice A Walk in the Park is a great read - and very useful for planning trips to one or more of South Africa's wonderful game parks. The author has a gift for describing the detail and the entertaining anecdotes inspire one to book the next visit and track down the characters and creatures so delightfully portrayed. The hints and suggestions are excellent and can add value and enjoyment to any trip to one of the parks covered in the book. Of course, if trips are out of the question, this is an excellent travel book that makes for fabulous vicarious visits to game reserves, offering a new appreciation of the country's rich fauna and flora.

How can "delightful" and "guide book" belong to the same sentence? Because we all know, that 90% of the guide books are just plain boring. Not this one. Roxanne has done a wonderful job transforming what could have been a dry guide book into an adventurous, entertaining, and hilarious recount of her own experiences at those parks. The result is a memoir that transports you to the South African parks before you get there and it also gives you all the information you need to plan your own adventure.

Excelente....

In this clever picture book, six different shapes attend Shapeston Elementary School along with the children: Triangle, Square, Circle, Rectangle, Rhombus (or ?Diamond? to her friends) and Oval. As the story begins, the big news at school is the upcoming play. Everyone is looking forward to auditioning, especially the shapes. One by one they are introduced, with descriptions of their unique personalities and interests, along with the roles they've played before (Triangle as a tortilla chip, Oval as a skating rink, Diamond as a kite and the like). Happily, after all the wonderful auditions, the drama teacher decides everyone gets to be in the play! This fresh and playful idea for a concept book, written and illustrated by Tania Howells, makes shapes and early geometry fun. Each shape gets its own two-page spread. On the left is a large picture of the shape, with a simple and expressive face and limbs set in a jaunty pose, along with the explanatory text. On the right are boxes containing smaller illustrations of objects made out of the shape. The art, simply drawn in bright, bold colors, is charming and engaging. These spreads could easily work on their own for a lesson on shapes, and the book could be used to spark a variety of ?I spy? activities with young children, in the classroom, in the playground or anywhere out in the world. Also, the ending spread showing the play's performance offers a terrific opportunity to search for the different shapes on the stage.

Starring Shapes!, by Tania Howells

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Personified shapes and children alike attend Shapeton Elementary School and they are excited about auditions for the upcoming school play Hansel and Gretel. Luckily, this play includes parts for everyone! Each shape (triangle, square, circle, rectangle, rhombus, and oval) is introduced to readers on a spread. One page illustrates the shape in various objects such as kites and baseball fields, while the other describes the different things a shape can be. For instance, "Diamond soars high as a kite, finds her perfect fit in puzzles and dazzles in patterns." The language is a bit confusing at times, as Howells breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to readers. "Square is a swell guy to be around—but you probably knew that already!" This happens throughout different shape introductions, but not in all of them, and makes the text feel choppy and unrefined. While the childlike Photoshop illustrations are bright and clear, the wavy lines make the book feel rushed and do not work with the text. VERDICT While the Shapeton Elementary's play is a big hit, this picture book misses its mark.—Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Cute book better suited for K-1 By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: The shapes at Shapeston Elementary School are very excited about the upcoming auditions for the school play. The story lists many of the roles each shape has played in the past such as the triangle as a flag and the square as a postage stamp. Everyone gets a part in the play and they all get a chance to be a star.ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were digitally rendered. They are very colorful and cute, but have an underdeveloped feel.THE GOOD: The concept as a whole was good. The shapes are getting ready to audition and are explaining their previous experience in different roles. Many of th pictures are appealing to the youngest crowd.THE NOT AS GOOD: The paragraphs explaining each shape's roles are far too long for preschool age. It would have been better to break the paragraphs up and put short sentences under the pictures of the different roles of each shape. This would require a different and more pleasing layout. Some of the vocabulary was also too mature for preschoolers. On one page, there is even a combination of verb tenses in the same paragraph. Ouch!AGE RECOMMENDATION: K-1NOTE: I was given a free ARC copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All of my reviews are 100% honest based on preset criteria.

A Cute Shape Book with a Story By Grateful Grandma In this cute picture book, Shapeston Elementary School is hosting a play and all the students want to audition for a part, especially the Shapes. Each shape gets an opportunity in the book to tell about its attributes accompanied by a set of pictures showing them in a particular "role". Of course, all the students and shapes get an opportunity to appear in the play. As the book is read, children will get a chance to see the various shapes as they are used and seen regularly. The illustrations are bright, colourful and very kid-friendly. The shapes highlighted are triangle, square, circle, rectangle, rhombus and oval. An educational book that is fun for children. A definite to use in a Math class while learning about shapes.Lots of follow up opportunities after the story is read. Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Amazon.com Review When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gables with a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy. We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Adapter M.C. Helldorfer includes only a few of Anne's mirthful and poignant adventures, yet manages to capture the freshness of one of children's literature's spunkiest, most beloved characters. There's just enough to make beginning readers want more--luckily, there's a lot more in the originals! Illustrator Ellen Beier creates vibrant pictures to portray the beauty of the land around Green Gables and the spirited nature of Anne herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal Grade 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.Jane P. Fenn, Corning-Painted Post West High School, NYCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This version of Mongomery's classic is illustrated with 14 beautiful color prints by artist Gabriella Dellosso. Though many cheaper editions are available, this is really quite nice for the price.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

184 of 189 people found the following review helpful. who woulda thunk By wayner41 Two years ago I would have bet a bazillion dollars I would never read a "girls" book. But at 71 years of age I found myself in a house full of books only one of which I had not read. I am terrribly addicted to reading so, in desperation, I started "Anne of Green Gables". It is a marvelous book with a main character I wish I could meet every day in real life. Again to feed my addiction I bought the "Anne of Green Gables" series. Each book was a delight and I soon forgot that they were "girls" books. Maud created a character we all need in our life. She turns the mundane magical and believable. Reading them all in nearly a continous setting makes Anne "wearying" to quote Marilla since unbounded child-like wonder is hard to maintain. I wish I had read these books decades ago so Anne could have helped me through some less than happy times.

Great collection By Amanda Oster I think it goes without saying that I love the Anne books, so I will keep my review to one strictly of this Kindle edition. While I am only about half through the first book (and will certainly update my review if it changes), I'm pretty thrilled with this collection. It's exactly as the description claims: it's easy to jump from one book to another using the Table of Contents. Once you reach the desired book, it is easy to jump from chapter to chapter. I'm giving this only four stars, because the editing isn't perfect; I've noticed a couple odd words and phrases. (Example: "Parthian shot" became "Parthian shaft.") Thus far, however, they are minor and have not significantly impacted my enjoyment. And for the price (I paid $0.99), it's certainly not a big deal.Over all, I highly recommend this collection. As I stated, if my opinion changes as I read further, I will certainly update my review.

I chose this edition after sampling various other less quality versions on Amazon. The eBook is very well formatted and reads like a charm on my Kindle 2. As a long-time Anne of Green Gables reader, having this compilation is great for when I feel like revisiting Anne of Avonlea or Anne's House of Dreams. These are truly wonderful stories and you just get lost in the world of Green Gables thanks to Lucy Maud Montgomery's fantastic use of imagery.Just get this edition and let Anne take you on a wonderful journey!

The Invisible City by Brian LoweYears ago I read almost everything written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, so I must admit I really enjoyed this book. Brian Lowe has done such a super job mimicking ERB that this could pass as a “lost book” recently discovered in an attic in Tarzana, California. If you enjoy a rollicking adventure, a rollercoaster ride packed with heroic gentlemen, beautiful (but smart and resourceful) damsels in distress, multiple odd species (good and bad), lost cities, strange cultures, and badder than bad dastardly villains, then this is definitely the book for you.

This voice is more polite, circumspect and yet vibriant and vital. His story has all the elements one could wish for. There is action, adventure, unusual characters, not to mention time-travel, and a quest to bereunited with his true love. A very well written, compelling read.
