0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An ancient Aboriginal travel route in southeast Australia is brought to light By J. Weissel I very poetic approach to the rediscovery of an ancient Aboriginal travel route between the Mt Kosciuszko high country and the coast at Eden. Blay, an experienced bushwalker, is your guide to the Bundian Way. Through his perambulations, he uncovers evidence from artifacts which define the route. Over the past 230 years, activities such and land clearing for sheep and cattle grazing and the timber industry, have heavily overprinted the landscape making such evidence obscure. He ruminates on the role played by aboriginals in showing early white settlers and surveyors the route between the mountains and the sea. As a scientist, I pondered the question of why the Aboriginals chose the Bundian Way as the "best" way for them to travel between the coast and the high mountains. The Bundian way crosses some difficult terrain which I thought should be avoided by parties traveling on foot. In all, an intriguing if not totally convincing thesis on a key point of Aboriginal heritage in southeast Australia.

Excerpt from Intra MurosI felt that he was right, said in a few words, and we started slowly up the street. He had drawn my hand within his arm, and endeavored to interest me, as we walked. But my heart clung to the dear ones whom I felt I was not to see again on earth, and several times I stopped and looked wistfully back the way we had come. He was very patient and gentle with me, waiting always till I was ready to proceed again; but at last my hesitation became so great that he said pleasantly:"You are so weak I think I had better carry you;" and without waiting for a reply, he stooped and lifted me in his arms, as though I had been a little child; and, like a child, I yielded, resting my head upon his shoulder, and laying my arm about his neck. I felt so safe, so content, to be thus in his care. It seemed so sweet, after the long, lonely struggle, to have some one assume the responsibility of caring thus tenderly for me.He walked on with firm, swift steps, and I think I must have slept; for the next I knew, I was sitting in a sheltered nook, made by flowering shrubs, upon the softest and most beautiful turf of grass, thickly studded with fragrant flowers, many of them the flowers I had known and loved on earth. I remember noticing heliotrope, violets, lilies of the valley, and mignonette, with many others of like nature wholly unfamiliar to me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I've purchased several copies to share with others facing death of their loved ones!

An 1800’s Perspective of Visiting A Heavenly/Celestial World By Stella Carrier This kindlebook of Intra Muros by Rebecca Ruter Springer caught my attention due to my intuitive understand of why I must be open to both new age and Christian views on the afterlife (for personal spiritual reasons I would rather avoid going into for now). Additionally, I unintentionally found out about the late author and this book and felt that there was a spiritual reason for this especially when I noticed that Rebecca Springer (the author) shared the same birthday as me. Springer begins her writing by admitting that she had been ill for many weeks and sharing the details of wearing a robe similar to the other residents of the place that her soul traveled to. Springer also mentioned the elaborate detail of the houses she visited in this new heavenly world that were made of the finest marbles, broad verandas, and were unlike any architecture that she has seen on earth. The good news is that there is more details to Intra Muros by Rebecca Springer.

The Scottish border is steeped in history. “Exploring History in the Scottish Borders” provides an overview of the history of this turbulent area. This didn't produce Robin Hood characters, it produced a tough and often violent people, the border reivers. In the 16th century the Scottish borderland made the American wild west of the 19th century look like a kindergarten. But its past has also left its mark in splendid castles, beautiful ruined abbeys, and a depth of history few other areas can match. From the time of the Romans the borderland was the crossroads between the north and south of Britain. The often fraught relationship between England and Scotland left its mark on the area and the people. This book tells the story of the of the English/Scottish borderland from the time of the Romans, though the Scottish wars of independence, the turbulent 16th century and Henry VIII’s “rough wooing”, up until the reopening of part of the Waverley Line by Queen Elizabeth in 2015. Illustrated by many full colour photographs, Exploring History in the Scottish Borders provides an overview of Border history, and a guide to key historical sites in the borderland.

The price was right, and I was curious enough to initially decide to give the first few chapters a read, even if just to appease my friend and cure the boredom the frequent JFK-to-Heathrow travel warriors among us know all too well.I was not disappointed. What followed was an unexpected thrill ride that kept me on the edge of my seat and had me pondering our place in the universe and the seemingly limitless potential and challenges an interstellar existence would bring our species. The author paints a vivid picture of an alternative reality that truly captures the imagination. Brilliantly written, extraordinarily creative and certainly thought provoking, "Other Than Human" was one of my most enjoyable reads in recent memory, and I've since passed along the favor and recommended to friends and family. Thanks, Mr. Quinn, and God Bless America.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed this novel By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed this novel. I found it easy to read, and not because the language was elementary. The author's prose struck a terrific balance between painting a vivid picture and allowing the reader to navigate the pages without having to slow down due to dense language. As for the plot, I don't want to give too much away but the story was fantastic. The characters were flawed but real and I found myself quite engrossed at times not wanting to put it down. I would definitely recommend this novel to a friend. At the low price its listed at, it is an absolute steal.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Chris Sinclair This book is very easy to read. The clean and tight prose move along the excellent story and the characters grow throughout the progress of the book. But by the end of the novel, I found myself reading it, not as some beach book, but as a really deep experience that made me think about my own life. I can relate to the main character in that I feel like I've experienced the same things he did. I can sense the heart of the book. The author took a lot of real feelings and injected them into a sci-fi story. Other than Human gets 5 stars.

Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember meets Louis Sachar's Holes in this imaginative and hilarious middle grade novel from New York Times bestselling author Michael Perry.

When the world started to fall apart, the government gave everyone two choices: move into the Bubble Cities…or take their chances outside. Maggie's family chose to live in the world that was left behind. Deciding it's time to grow up and grow tough, Maggie rechristens herself "Ford Falcon"—a name inspired by the beat-up car she finds at a nearby junkyard. Ford's family goes to this junkyard to scavenge for things they can use or barter with the other people who live OutBubble. Her family has been able to survive this brave new world by working together. But when Ford comes home one day to discover her home ransacked and her family missing, she must find the strength to rescue her loved ones with the help of some unlikely friends.

The Scavengers is a wholly original tween novel that combines an action-packed adventure, a heartfelt family story, and a triumphant journey of self-discovery in a world where one person's junk is another person's key to survival. Katherine Applegate, author of the Newbery Medal winner The One and Only Ivan, raves "Michael Perry pulls out all the stops in this colorful tale."

The Scavengers, by Michael Perry

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Perry creates a version of the future where climate change and the threat of terrorism are wreaking havoc on the world. The government has partnered with the CornVivia Corporation to control corn production after seizing all the farmland in the country through eminent domain. Yet citizens beg the government to do something to protect everyone. The government responds by creating Bubble Cities—domed, protected cities. The corn that the CornVivia Corporation grows is called URCorn and is genetically modified to cure "cancer and diabetes and baldness and bad skin and arthritis and pretty much whatever ails you." For those families, like Maggie's, that chose to live "Out Bubble," they work very hard to survive off of the less-desirable land. Maggie's family is lucky—when they finally find a place to settle after drifting for a few years, they end up with Toad and Arlinda as neighbors. Toad and Arlinda take Maggie, her parents, and her little brother Henry under their wing teaching them about gardening, wild plants, pig latin, and spoonerisms. Both jargons are explained in the book, and for the most part, decoding the words isn't difficult; struggling readers may get distracted. One day Maggie comes home to find it ransacked and her entire family missing. She makes it her mission to find them. The unique and interesting cast of multidimensional primary and secondary characters are the narrative's strength. The portrayal of the government and corporations is not flattering, and at times the political message overwhelms the plot. However, this was an enjoyable read and Maggie is a strong, brave, adventurous, and resourceful role model for younger readers.—Amy Commers, South St. Paul Public Library, MN

Review “Michael Perry pulls out all the stops in this colorful tale. You gotta love Ford Falcon, an intrepid heroine who can pepper-bomb a solar bear while quoting Emily Dickinson. As her friend Toad might say: Le-dightful.” (Katherine Applegate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Newbery Medal book The One and Only Ivan)“This brave, smart, funny, independent young hero is totally unlike anyone I’ve seen before, and she uses her wits to survive in a world unlike anything I could have dreamt up.” (Wendy Mass, New York Times bestselling author of The Candymakers)“Gifted and gritty, Ford Falcon is a heroine with heart. She grabs you by both arms and hauls you into her world—a haunting futurescape where you have to be inventive to survive, where every decision has a price. Michael Perry’s writing is exquisite, humorous and thrilling.” (Leslie Connor, author of Waiting for Normal)“A fast-paced, post-apocalyptic Laura Ingalls Wilder wilderness story. Comparisons to other gritty, engaging tough-girl-with-a-strong-moral-compass stories are inevitable, but Maggie has originality and grit to spare.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Ford Falcon capably demonstrates how a smart, determined kid might handle the end of the world and her place in it.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Unique and interesting cast of characters. Maggie is a strong, brave, adventurous, and resourceful role model for younger readers.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

I wedged my fists on my hips and I announced that Maggie was yesterday, and from this day forward I would answer only to Ford Falcon.

When the world fell apart, most people moved into the Bubble Cities. After her parents chose to live OutBubble, Maggie decided it was time to grow up and grow tough. She's renamed herself Ford Falcon, and she spends her days scavenging in a junkyard while fending off occasional attacks from solar bears and GreyDevils.

Although times are hard, Ford's family has been making do. But when she returns from a bartering trip to find her home ransacked and her family gone, Ford must prove she is brave enough to face this wild world alone and overcome whatever obstacles stand in the way of rescuing her loved ones.

I was a bit skeptical about how his children's book might turn out since a majority of his books geared toward adults arise from his own life. I was not disappointed. I liked this book because, although it follows the dystopian genre, it remains hopeful. There is very little violence, likable characters and an underlying positive message not only for child readers but adult readers as well. For those readers who like violence, darkness and despair, this is not your book. It is instead for those readers who enjoy a bit of Laura Ingalls Wilder mixed with some Emily Dickenson and that no nonsense girl everyone knew when growing up. Your child will learn a lot from this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A titillating novel By Night Owl Reviews Scavengers, by Michael Perry, is a titillating novel. ‘Ford Falcon’ is a favorite character of mine. It’s amazing how this young adult copes with the things going on in her life. Survival is a hot topic these days and this depiction of life in the future will surely make one think. What would I do? The journey this story takes is just far out there enough to be real, and that’s what makes it scary. We all like to think we’d protect the younger generation, but in a sense we’d need them to protect us. Ford Falcon’s reaction to her environment is not only interesting, but fun. The fact that she named herself after a car she found is one of the many incidents I love. From start to finish and young to old, all will love how the characters interact with one another. How they adapt to their surroundings is ingenious. This one will grab you from page one…and keep you ‘til the end.Review by: Pamela RobinsonDisclosure: Review copy from the publisher for an honest review.

Brantley Bookworm SpeaksThe Scavenger’s by Michael Perry****The Story: When the world started to fall apart, the government gave everyone two choices: move into the Bubble Cities . . . or take their chances outside. Maggie's family chose to live in the world that was left behind. Deciding it's time to grow up and grow tough, Maggie rechristens herself "Ford Falcon"—a name inspired by the beat-up car she finds at a nearby junkyard. The same junkyard where Ford's family goes to scavenge for things they can use and barter with the other people who live OutBubble. Her family has been able to survive this brave new world by working together. But when Ford comes home one day to discover her home ransacked and her family missing, she must find the strength to rescue her loved ones with the help of some friends. The Good: What sets this book apart from the endless myriad of dystopia fiction up for grabs is the setting. The world outside doesn't feel like a barren wasteland. It is an abandoned world that has returned to nature but not the same nature as before. What many writers tend to forget is that nature is more resilient than we think. Everyone though Hiroshima and Chernobyl would be lifeless wastelands but soon the grass grew back. The nature of humanity is well done too. The contrast between the bubble cities and guarded corn fields and the life of the outsiders can draw parallels to contemporary society. The world Ford Falcon lives in is constructed beautifully. It is a secondhand world but it lives and breathes in a way that seems very tangible. The characters that Ford Falcon encounter are well-written and seem like the kind of character’s one would encounter in a post-apocalyptic world when the societal pressures to conform have fallen away. It’s also to the book’s credit that Ford Falcon has her whole family with her. All too often the cliche is that the main character is an orphan or comes from a single parent household. Ford Falcon is with her mother and father and younger brother. All of them are fully realized characters or at least realized enough for the protagonist of that age. The mother is a particularly compelling character, whose sense of loss of the world she knew is quite tangible within the narrative. Her love of books is a very nice touch as well.Ford Falcon’s younger brother is really more of a side character than anything else, but he is unique in how he seems to be autistic. That’s fairly rare in this kind of fiction and serves as another level of challenge for the main character. No spoilers but the books ending is definitely not what most would expect. It is almost shocking and completely different from books in this genre. It may be setting up the possibility for sequels but the unorthodox ending alone is why fans of all ages should read this book. The Flaws: While the setting is very strong, the background on the other hand is lacking. The exact nature of what exactly caused the world to fall apart is somewhat vague. Throughout the book there are mentions of global warming, terrorism, genetically altered food and paranoia run amok but no concrete explanation. While it is to the author’s credit that he doesn’t utilize exposition, a more clear story of how the world came to be would be preferred. Again perhaps it is being saved for sequels. The villains are kind of weak. We get no real sense of their motivations and they are given names by the character which fit, but frankly are too childish to really take seriously. Perhaps that is the point. This book is good for breaking several tropes found in this genre but it falls into one that is very common and frankly overdone: the zombie trope. Throughout the book there is this lingering threat of mutated beasts that were once human and could overrun them at anytime. Done to death is what that is. The sad reality is, humanity doesn’t need zombies, gangs of normal humans could do exactly what happens in the book easily. Even the “science” explaining how they came to be is kind of flimsy. The author seemed to make an attempt to explain how they mutated in a somewhat realistic fashion but fell short and was not even vague enough to utilize handwavium. It wasn’t needed in the beginning anyway.Final Verdict: The Scavenger’s is a unique take on popular genre that is worth a read no matter the age group.Four out Five Starsthecultureworm.blogspot.com

Home can suck the life out of you. And Andrew would know. After graduating from one of those fancy, elite American colleges, he spent the next year and a half thrashing about in a call centre in his hometown in Canada. Then in a moment of impulsive boldness, he moved to South Korea.

The average person talking about the expat life won’t shut up about how amazing it is. And that’s a lie. Living in another country can be really hard. And coming back can be even harder. But that’s no reason not to go.

Through his own story as well as the narratives of thirteen average-extraordinary expats, Andrew presents the ups and downs of living abroad in an honest, punchy, humourous tone. Living abroad isn’t all sunshine and smiles, but because of the hardships—not in spite of them—it’s an adventure worth pursuing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic. By KathLDK Literogo I received this from the author in exchange for an honest review.South Korea is a unique place in which to live, especially when you’re an expat, in the prime of your life, with limited responsibilities. Most people come here to pay off student loans; some come to travel for a bit while they decide what they want to be when they grow up. A few come to jump-start their teaching career. Some come here with the apparent intention to destroy their livers. A lot of them end up writing memoirs about their time in Korea. And a lot of the time, those memoirs are truly awful. Andrew Gillmore’s memoir of his time spent in Korea breaks away from the deluge of one-sided, cliched and narcissistic drivel. The Red Fish Project stands apart, showing a kaleidoscope of experiences with unapologetic honesty and a dry sense of humour."There’s a t-shirt in my top drawer that features a bunch of green and blue fish all swimming in the same direction. Battling in the opposite direction, sporting something of a grimace, is a tiny red fish determined to go against the flow. At the top of the shirt are the words Think Different."The thing that sets this memoir apart from such “gems” as First Contact In Korea by Brian Ward and Seoul Searching by Al Williams is that The Red Fish Project is not just the story of Andrew Gillmore’s experiences as an expat in Korea, but a collection of stories from other expats who have left the soul-sucking drudgery of everyday life to forge adventure in other countries. Gillmore interviewed fourteen expats whose adventures range from cycling through South America to cross-cultural marriage. Each story gives voice to a different aspect of expat life, some of which may be entirely unexpected, and which, at times, were incredibly emotional. Furthermore, the blunt honesty of the novel lends itself to some pretty racy stories, and some quite revolting poop incidents."Completely nude and resembling the chiselled gods of an ancient tribe, Pete and I strutted into the bathhouse area, a room with maybe a dozen hot and cold tubs and a ceiling stretching up to Olympus.“Those kids over there are laughing at me,” said Pete.“You think so?”“What are the chances a group of fourteen-year-old Korean boys has seen red pubic hair before?”"Having already inflicted some truly awful expat memoirs upon myself, but with the willingness to give this one the benefit of the doubt nonetheless, I went into this one with low expectations. I steeled myself for the standard fare: first jaunt in a nude Korean spa, first soju hangover, something about being a celebrity because of being an ethnic minority in a homogenous country… As far as expat memoirs go, there’s a certain selection of experiences that are known to be crowd pleasers with the folks back home, but which tend to feel a bit tired after you’ve read fifty travel blogs on the subject. While some of them did make it into The Red Fish Project, however, I was pleasantly surprised with the refreshingly different way in which Gillmore tells them. These “commonplace” anecdotes are a sparse sprinkling in between some truly gut-wrenchingly sad, hilarious, confusing and inspirational stories from the 13 interviewees."At twenty-eight, he felt too young to get married, and Yun Hong also had a dream of moving to the West where life would be grand and perfect. Bill felt that if they were to move somewhere outside Korea, the burden would be on him, and that wasn’t the kind of responsibility he was prepared to assume."The stories told by the other expats are the true meat of this book, and their depiction of the reality of packing up your life and starting over in a new country resonated with my own experiences. I feel that they would be worthwhile reading for anyone planning to expatriate. Meanwhile, Gillmore’s personal anecdotes serve as illustrations for a series of essays ranging in topic from the failings of modern education to how comfort and convenience lead us to waste our lives away instead of contributing to the world. When you put Gillmore’s thoughts together with the experiences of people he met along the way, this book becomes so much more than a memoir."Comfort breeds apathy, and if there is something we have a lot of -those of us with college diplomas and brown loafers – it’s comfort… Imagine the changes we could effect if we used our time and resources a little better, if we pushed ourselves out of the comfort we’ve been blessed with and into a world that forces dirt on our hands."Although at first I was a little put off by the humour, feeling that it was maybe a touch overdone in some places, I was glad of it when the book became more serious, as it created a strong balance to the tragedy of some of the stories, and the philosophy and discussion in the essay-like sections. Gillmore is frank and self-confident without coming across as a narcissist, and his approachability makes him an instantly sympathetic narrator through whom the stories of the other expats can be told. Furthermore, he is a culturally aware observer without being imperial about it: instead of imposing his own culture on Korea, or holding his own country as a standard that Korea must live up to, Gillmore compares and contrasts while making a concerted effort to understand the thinking behind the cultural differences. He tries to find a context for the culture clash, through empathetic imagination and compassion, and this balanced view allows him to be critical without being unfair."Living abroad should be a rite of passage. It’s so invaluable that there’s no reason to not do it for at least a while. And it’s not enough to just visit another place. You need to live there. And to take it one step further, you need to become a part of that country. What you gain from the experience is something you can’t learn in a book. You can read about it all you want. Someone can tell you about it like in this interview, but the changes it makes – well, you need to do it to really understand… Pushing yourself should be an everyday thing for everyone."The Red Fish Project goes beyond memoir to become an inspirational book that tells it as it is. It examines why we are driven to leave our comfort zone and seek out new lives in places that are difficult to live in. Gillmore tells his own tale, but by going beyond his own experiences through his interviews with fellow travelers, he has created a collection of stories that give a very real picture of what it’s like to go against the flow, and why breaking out of your box can be a life-changing choice. This is an excellent book.Read more of my reviews at Literogo.com.

A Great Read By Amazon Customer In the book, The Red Fish Project, Andrew Gillmore shares his own living abroad experience in Korea, along with many others he meets on his way around Southeast Asia who dared to leave the comfort of their “home.” Gillmore offers insight into the beauty of living abroad, while sharing the scary, unpredictable parts too. Gillmore discusses raw, personal stories from language barrier love stories, cultural shock (massage) experiences, to his teaching English days where sure he creates genuine friendships, but also gets spit on. Balancing between dry humor and cheerful pragmatism, he encourages us to get out of our comfort zones and not only go abroad, but live abroad. Whether we long to embark on a personal journey, travel, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more surprises and unpredictability, The Red Fish Project cracks open a world of wonder. Gillmore is extremely persuasive and now has me saying: “I’m going to live abroad.”

Through his writing, Andrew unveils a new perspective on life away from home and why one should consider such a path. For anyone who has lived abroad, reading this book will bring back nostalgic memories of ones own experiences through the experiences of others. For those considering a life abroad, this book will give you the assurance, and possibly courage, you will need to take that final step. The unique quality of this book, which sets it apart from many others, is that it is not merely one man's perspective but a multitude of perspectives coming together as one. The characters in this memoir are unique and Andrew skillfully portrays their differences with tactful nuance. Truly a delightful read!

DO you reckon Tom Sawyer was satisfied after all them adventures? I mean the adventures we had down the river, and the time we set the darky Jim free and Tom got shot in the leg. No, he wasn't. It only just p'isoned him for more. That was all the effect it had. You see, when we three came back up the river in glory, as you may say, from that long travel, and the village received us with a torchlight procession and speeches, and everybody hurrah'd and shouted, it made us heroes, and that was what Tom Sawyer had always been hankering to be.

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

By Daren Henry Wilkerson If you really want to sink your teeth into three of Mark Twain's greatest characters, read this book. I actually prefer it over Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain went much deeper in defining the characters; Tom thinks he knows everything and loves to argue, Huck takes everything literally and loves to argue back, and Jim is well. . . Jim! I will say this: If anyone has ever found the portrayal of Jim offensive, it's no different here, but I'm assuming that if you're considering reading this, you must have enjoyed the other two books. So, what are you waiting for, read it!

Tom kinda craves notoriety as he competes for the unofficial title of Hannibal's First Traveler. Then Tom, Huck and Jim are accidentally kidnapped by a mad inventor and go sailing off in a hot-air balloon. They eventually find themselves adrift over the Atlantic Ocean but when they sight land, it is not Europe! This book is told with youthful zest and slangy vocabulary by an admiring Huck in the first person, so that he can praise Tom's leadership skills and powers of argument! The three unintentional argonauts finally realize that they are sailing over the Sahara Desert, where they have a variety of adventures, interspersed with juvenile deductions and debates. Their adventures are right out of Arabian Nights: no magic lamp or genies, but caravans, lions, mirages, warring Bedouin tribes, devastating sand storms! All interspersed with Tawin's wry humor as he slips in some snide remarks about more serious social issues (spoken through the mouths of babes). Not much of a plot, but plenty of lively dialogue as the boys try to argue using logic and indulge in youthful dreams of sudden fortune. A fun read with sly social criticism. But really, Mark Twain, Tigers--in Africa???

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A real treat By Ian T. Healy What a treat this book was! I'm surprised that I wasn't made to read it back in junior high or high school, when I undoubtedly wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. It's not nearly as in-depth a tale as Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, but nevertheless it's an enjoyable, light read about three friends going on an amazing journey. There are strong elements of steampunk in this, which is doubly wonderful because it was actually written during that very same period. The best part of all are the stories, discussions, and arguments between Tom, Huck, and Jim over the course of their travels.

By Turnaround365 This is a fun book for kids who are transitioning into chapter books or for reluctant readers, or kids who just plain like to read and like Batman. The idea is pretty fun: It's chapter book, but every so often a page full of action will be done as a comic book page instead of a prose page. And when it's appropriate, big sound effects like SWOOSH! or FWIP! are run across the middle of the page in fun fonts. The story is fun, too: While Bruce Wayne is visiting Brazil for a business conference to try to help the rainforest, he hears about workers getting kidnapped by a huge bat monster. Batman heads off into the jungle in search of answers. As for who he finds, well, let's just say sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.Best of all, the book isn't written in a "kiddie" way, with simple vocabulary or "Dick and Jane" sentence structure, like so many books of this type often are. I remember having a problem with condescending books as a kid. This book won't rankle any kids that way. Also, the art is done in the style of the Batman Animated series so it's a welcome return to the world of that show.

Bruce is in Brazil for an economic environment conference and who should be there causing trouble but Poison Ivy. Plus she's got Man-Bat under her control as well! There's more story than action, but these three characters take centre stage throughout the whole book so there are plenty of costumed capers. I liked the environmental story for the most part as its message was not extremist but rather showed how Poison Ivy herself took her beliefs beyond radical preferring to erase humans to protect the plants. Bruce Wayne's end solution was more politically correct than economically sound but otherwise an entirely enjoyable escapade. Poison Ivy is one of my favourite villains!

Not only that, it is smart and introduces complex environmental concepts that do not disparage young readers but honor their curiosity and address what's at stake for humanity. Frankly, I was quite pleasantly surprised at the depth of coverage for such a book filled with some animated pages, sound effects interspersed through plain text, and the completeness of the story (obvious beginning, middle, end). Definitely highly recommended for the early reader into action heroes, art appreciation and environmental protection!

“Don’t look back,” Ganyo whispered. “If you do, everything will turn bad.” The voice of my drum teacher echoed in my mind as we made the midnight trek up the path. I was scared by what he said, yet strangely tempted to look back at the lake where we had conducted the juju ceremony… ____ In this novel of self-discovery, Boston percussionist Dale Jackson travels to Ghana to study two music traditions. He unwittingly becomes involved in ancient juju ceremonies that directly impact not only his sojourn to Africa, but also affect his life back home. Dale’s musical, cultural, and spiritual journey takes him from the tropical coast where the rituals occur, to the arid northern city of Tamale, where strange events threaten to overwhelm him. The dry Sahara winds of the harmattan are the least of Dale’s worries as he confronts psychic attacks, haunting spirits, and visions of the dark events that he must face upon his return home. Divided into three distinct sections, Sand and Ceremony places the reader into Dale’s unique world, where unknown aspects of the natural and supernatural are fully revealed.

Gripping, adventurous tale of West African spirituality, music, and self-discovery By karaokepoet I absolutely love West African music and spent some time over there, so I had very high expectations for this novel. I was not disappointed! What a wonderfully nuanced, rich story with so many angles and hooks, and unexpected plot twists and turns that kept me guessing. The writing is very evocative and really took me back in my mind to the sights, sounds and smells of West African life. The characters are well fleshed-out, with many interesting, whimsical details about village life and culture in coastal and northern Ghana. There are moments of humor, darkness and at times, magical reality that weave effortlessly through the entire story, which spans two continents and explores ideas of family, faith (in a broad/spiritual sense), and music, especially the importance of percussion in ritual and life. While my description probably sounds a bit academic, the story is anything but... it is full of life and almost pulsating with the rhythms and music it describes. I know almost nothing about percussion and musical theory in general, and yet the narrator manages to include many passages about these subjects for the reader's benefit that, in the hands of a less capable writer, would seem tediously pedantic. Jerry Leake, on the other hand, manages to make even the descriptions of rhythmic patterns and structures seem fascinating, sacred and deeply symbolic of "stuff" in our unconscious and life that we take for granted. He makes the details of percussion seem almost poetic and Jungian... just enough is left unsaid that it creates an aura of mystique that adds to the suspense. He also describes the sounds so clearly that I could hear them in my mind. Not just the percussion of drumming (the narrator spends a great deal of time learning, and later teaching percussion), but of life and nature interacting with humans. The story is so alive!I also like the vulnerability of the main character, Dale Jackson. He is not a macho Heart of Darkness/conquer the wilderness type. He approaches his studies and travel in West Africa with tremendous humility and reverence that is appealing. He is sensitive, at times a bit naive and idealistic, but extremely sincere; without spoilers, the story is (in a nutshell) a description of his quest to always do the right thing, and sometimes finding his efforts unexpectedly and catastrophically backfiring. But his authenticity and vulnerability as a character was, for me, part of what I loved best about the story. He is not heroic, though he tries, sometimes fumblingly, to be. He is human. He is in a constant state of negotiating and facing his fears, making allies along the way in assorted unfamiliar situations, and the constant struggle is both painful and delightful to read. He struggles to understand the cultural mindset and differences behind the music he has spent his life studying, and he struggles to understand the people in his life around him on both continents, as well as the various twists and turns fate sends his way. He struggles to be a good person and to give back to others, even if his efforts are not always received as he expects. Through it all, Dale evolves, and the realness and depth of his evolution is what is most moving of all about the story to me. It's a story about the "dark night of the soul," on many levels (again, no spoilers!), and about how one man's quest to learn about music turned into a sort of initiation into his own heart and spiritual maturity. If you love travel stories, stories about the arts or music, if you love African culture or have traveled to West Africa, you will love this story. If you simply want a gripping suspense read with a shimmery sprinkle of spirituality and magical reality, you'll love it too. If you love stories about faith, healing and personal growth, there's something for you here too. There's something here for everyone, it's such an incredibly rich and alive story! Definitely read this one!!!

Jerry Leake obviously has a vast knowledge of the subject matter within the pages of his book, and dedicated a lot of time and effort into developing his story in a way that the reader can almost feel themselves there with him, in the mysterious, and often rather scary, African villages that he visits. This book helped me to learn things that I had never thought of before, and took some twists that I never would have expected, and what is the art of reading for, if not to take adventures you can't take in person and learn things you haven't experienced firsthand.I would definitely classify this book as a must-read, and I have recommended it to friends and family.

By KSM Having traveled to this region of Ghana many years ago, Sand and Ceremony brought me back with a wonderful sense of nostalgia for the culture and people of Ghana. The story also rings true with the somewhat unavoidable cognitive dissonance that I experienced at times living among the people and with other temporary expats. Jerry Leake's story reveals insights into the nature and motivations that such an experience provides and has lasting impact, even as it plays out back at home.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Promising New Author By Jack Anderson The author of this book is a friend of a friend of a friend, so when I heard he had published a short science fiction novel for three dollars I thought I would give a chance (thanks to the kindle I consume a constant stream of new science fiction). The setting is well developed and reminiscent of Ursula Le Guin with just enough details to keep the story interesting while retaining some mystery. The author clearly has a lot of ideas and while the world building and plot are slightly derivative (in the world of sci-fi it is rare to encounter a truly new idea with the hundreds of thousands of books on Amazon alone) there are enough original aspects to maintain interest. What keeps Holindrian from being a four or five star novel, in my opinion, is lack of character development and inconsistent timeline. I don't want to spoil anything, but aside from the titular protagonist and his viceroy (whose witty banter provides most of the books comedy) most of the characters are static science fiction archetypes or simply underdeveloped. While it may have added another 20 pages to the novel, it would have made the conflict much more engaging if I actually cared about the participants by knowing their history and personality. Additionally, thrown in with the main plot are flashbacks and references to secondary characters (including Panayiotis) which could have really helped flesh out the setting and conflict, but I found them to have either not enough context or were too brief to provide meaningful information. Overall, lots of potential and good ideas with an enjoyable writing style, the vocabulary employed is diverse but obviously the work of a budding author just starting to cut his teeth. For less than the cost of a latte, I recommend it to fans of the genre and I hope the author continues to write, I would gladly read future work.
