1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Short reads with a lot of action. By Vanessa Bettencourt Although this is a very short and quick story to read, the characters have distinct personalities and presence during the entire story.I couldn’t stop imagining the dialogue or action scenes like I was reading a graphic novel, where the cool characters have dark humor and snarky answers - especially the car chase scene, or when we picture his little daughter coming downstairs to meet her fate.I would prefer to have a bit more description and feel for the world, but this story almost feels like an introduction to a larger one. I can see Eron and Jacques becoming a series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ~~ A trip to the park for this family ~~ By Richard and Liz Book 3 in the series finds Ben, Zach and Chelsea sharing breakfast with their parents on a Sunday morning. Mom suggests they go to the park so with picnic in hand they all walk to the park. When called for lunch, the boys each grab one of their sister's hands and walk with her to the picnic. Chelsea takes a nap after lunch on Mom's lap whilst Dad plays Frisbee with the boys. Once awake, Chelsea and her mom also join in. Who or what interrupts their game? The family values promoted in this story is TREMENDOUS teaching young children how to treat each other. The illustrations are mostly good and definitely colorful but not as high quality as some books. Whilst readable on my Kindle Paperwhite the font is a little on the small side and is in fixed format so cannot be enlarged. A larger device or Cloud makes for a much better read. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Family adventures to be read to youngsters By Charles A. Ray In the charming little Kids Book: Let’s Go to the Park, written by Mae Segeti and Nic Monty, three children go to the park with their parents. This is part of the Family Fun bedtime stories for kids series, a series of family stories for children age 2 – 8. While some of the words are probably a bit advanced for younger children, my own experience with my grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, have shown me that they quickly get it, often with just a bit of explanation. The illustrations are quite cute, and the adventures, especially the part where a dog grabs the Frisbee they’re playing with and runs away with it, will entertain youngsters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful and Colourful By Deborah Let's Go to the Park by Mae Segeti is a delightful and colourful. What stands out is the simplistic outing the family had which wasn’t reliant upon spending money or being caught up inside on technology. It takes the reader into the park outing where the family spends time together, sharing play-time, caring for each other and touches on family pet’s and the responsibility associated with having one.I enjoyed the illustrations, which are colourful and certainly capture the essence of the story and would appeal to a young person’s imagination.I would suggest it is perfect for children 2 – 6 years

Over the course of six years, she will instruct university-aged Muslim women, earn her students' trust, and learn the consequences of freedom of expression, taken for granted in one culture but not granted in another. Despite obstacles set by her detractors, she persists, and her students and life in Kuwait flourish. Cortell A suitcase filled with Nails is the amazing story of a devoted teacher who with grace and determination taught her students in Kuwait the power of art. In spite of teaching in a hostile environment, Yvonne Wakefield triumphed because of her love for her students and her determination to have them see the power of their work. This is a very heartfelt story not to be missed.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Timely, Inspiring and Thought Provoking By S. Dean Ms. Pepin-Wakefield's account of her art teaching experience in another culture is well-written, timely, humorous, chilling and completely thought provoking. Bravo to her for having the tenacity to continue reaching out to and inspiring the inner lives of her somewhat cloistered women art students, despite the indifference and hostility of the existing school power hierarchy. This is a "must read" for every artist or educator who has experienced, in even a small way, the all-too-familiar challenges and triumphs she describes.I see a great movie here, with Tilda Swinton as the blunt, determined but inspirational art teacher!

The books only shows one side of the society By Basma While the author's writing and storytelling skills are captivating, I often found myself shocked by the level of exaggeration that the book depicts. I was one of the authors students and her classes were just like the book says; fun.As i am 20 pages away from finishing the book, i feel inclined to explain some of the things mentioned in the book to get the full picture which the author may not have known after living in my country for 4 years.1- the department was placed in a segregated college and because of that, most of the students came from more conservative families. Not all the women in kuwait wear black covering themselves from head to toe, not all of them follow the old traditions and not all liberals are frowned upon. Looking at the kuwaiti culture from one perspective doesn't give the reader a true sense of how kuwaitis live, but i understand why the author mostly focused on the conservatives because she was exposed to them on a daily basis. Simply visiting a different college like the one right next to the faculty housing which is where she lived would show her a completely different view of our culture.2- although the Kuwaiti Airport is relatively small, all the wayfinding signs are bilingual. Nothing is written in just arabic like the author have mentioned.3- a lot of the traditions were not shown correctly because of the author's exposure to only 1 side of the society.Situations in Kuwait can be frustrating if you are not used to it and don't know how one should react in certain situations.

Why do prominent modern Indonesian sultans continue love affairs with the Mermaid Queen? Why is the island of Flores Ground Zero for Hobbit sightings? How does a Papuan hunter juggle the four religions which want a piece of his soul? Why did a now-neglected spice cause historic mayhem among greedy Europeans? Why does it make good business sense to make friends with the dragon princess? Why is discovering a new species almost as good as sex? What is the allure of Waltzing Banana Island? Can an elderly village woman armed with just a broom and gumption kill giant mosquitoes ‘til they’re dead?

This is Indonesia as you’ve probably never imagined, full of curious people, startling happenings, and unexpected moments of humanity and introspection, giddiness and solemnity, avarice and ambition.

Curious Encounters of the Human Kind - Indonesia: True Asian Tales of Folly, Greed, Ambition and Dreams, by Paul Spencer Sochaczewski

Review "Sochaczewski is a world-class searcher, reporter, and observer who has criss-crossed Asia for forty years, pausing in the most unlikely places and finding extraordinary people. The essays in this insightful and witty chronicle present a rich tapestry of eccentric nobles, self-serving naturalists, scoundrels who will make your teeth ache, celebrity monks, and memorable folks whose stories are too good to be true. But they are." -Christopher G. Moore, author of the Vincent Calvino novels and Heart Talk "All the personal traveler's tales in these volumes are captivating, all filled with humor, drama, and insight, with an edgy take-no-prisoners voice. You won't find anything else like this on the bookshelf." -Jeff McNeely, chief scientist, International Union for Conservation of Nature "Most of Paul Sochaczewski's curious encounters start out as intelligent travel writing, exploring hidden corners of Asia and characters very much out of the ordinary. But this series works on a more complex level ... I read each story feeling refreshed, enlightened, and curious to see what the next stage of Sochaczewski's journey would bring." -Judith M. Heimann, author of The Most Offending Soul Alive: Tom Harrisson and His Remarkable Life and The Airmen and the Headhunters: A True Story of Lost Soldiers, Heroic Tribesmen and the Unlikeliest Rescue of World War II "A book for everyone who knows that the Mysterious East is alive and well, and more how-about-that-wonderful than you perhaps imagined." -Harry Rolnick, author of The Chinese Gourmet, The Complete Book of Coffee, and Spice Chronicles: Exotic Tales of a Hungry Traveler "Paul Sochaczewski skips about Asia like a Monkey God hopping from mountain to mountain, bringing back life-prolonging peaches while annoying the gatekeepers. Whatever you do, follow him on this journey!" -Lee Chor Lin, director of the National Museum of Singapore; former curator of Asian Civilizations Museum - Singapore; author of Batik: Creating an Identity "The Curious Encounters of the Human Kind series is a delicious stew of improbable characters and intriguing stories, served up in thoroughly pithy style, and with a hearty dash of irreverent humour." -Tim Hannigan, author of Raffles and the British Invasion of Java and Brief History of Indonesia: Sultans, Spices, and Tsunamis: The Incredible Story of Southeast Asia's Largest Nation "Constructed on a base of strange but true personal travel adventures, Curious Encounters adds elements of history, an edgy sense of humour, mysticism, political incorrectness, current affairs, and memorable characters you'll wish you had the pleasure to meet on your travels." -Jason Brooke, director of The Brooke Trust "The Curious Encounters series is proof positive that a writer/traveler can immerse himself in Asian cultures and yet remain objective enough to write extremely entertaining and often irreverent articles and colorful stories about what he has experienced. You won't regret a moment spent reading these tales, which perfectly capture the allure and spice of the places visited." -Dean Barrett, author of Memoirs of a Bangkok Warrior

The Case of the Stolen Sixpence: The Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins Book 1, by Holly Webb

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins lives with her grandmother, the owner of a respectable boardinghouse, in London. Maisie spends her days helping with the dusting and sweeping of guest rooms while daydreaming of becoming a great and famous detective. When Maisie finds a wriggling sack by the river with a tiny puppy inside, she decides that her first case will be finding the cruel person who would cast away a defenseless animal—and convincing her no-nonsense grandmother that Eddie the puppy must come to live with them. Eddie becomes Maisie's partner in crime when a second mystery falls into her lap: money has gone missing from the butcher shop, and classmate George is blamed. Narrator Anna Bentinck does a wonderful job giving Maisie spunk and substance, though her voices for male characters are a bit harder to appreciate. The story is very short, yet owing to references to the Victorian era and the use of old-fashioned British English, it may be too complex for many struggling readers. While this offers a quick, enjoyable listen, it would seem that the series hasn't quite identified its audience. VERDICT Recommended with reservations for upper elementary libraries.—Suzanne Dix, The Seven Hills School Library, Cincinnati, OH

From Booklist Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins, who helps her grandmother run a Victorian boarding house, idolizes dashing detective Gilbert Carrington and hopes one day to solve cases of her own. When her friend George is accused of stealing money from the butcher shop where he works, Maisie and her faithful canine assistant, Eddie, are on the case, ready to right this terrible wrong. The young sleuth acquires tools (a notebook and a magnifying glass), perfects her disguises (with help from a thespian boarder), and uses her observational powers to sift through the clues and crack the case. Maisie is sure to charm beginning chapter-book readers new to the mystery genre. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her systematic methods concerning the rules of evidence and deduction will enlighten would-be investigators. Lindsay’s black-line drawings add to the appeal and break up the text for younger readers. This makes a perfect choice for graduates of David A. Adler’s Cam Jansen series who are not quite ready for Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes Mysteries. Grades 3-6. --Kay Weisman

Review "Maisie is sure to charm beginning chapter-book readers new to the mystery genre."—Booklist "Readers will eagerly await this spunky, saucy new amateur detective's next caper."—Kirkus "Emerging chapter book readers who enjoy mystery and historical fiction will find much to like here."—School Library Journal "Lindsay's humorous b&w line drawings are in step with the light atmosphere Webb creates as she lays the groundwork for future cases."—Publishers Weekly "Mystery-loving kids who have moved beyond Cam Jansen and kids who prefer their historical fiction on the light side may find Maisie's escapades to their liking."—Bulletin

By delicateflower152 "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is the first in a new mystery series targeted at the 9 - 12 year old group. Holly Webb has created a spunky young would-be detective, Maisie Hitchens.Maisie lives in her grandmother's London boarding house. She admires the famous detective Gilbert Carrington and wants nothing more than to become a famous detective herself. Maisie finds a wet sack containing a puppy that she names Eddie and, even though her grandmother does not allow pets in the boarding house, takes him home and hides him in her room. When Eddie steals some sausages from the butcher's delivery boy, Maisie later learns George has been fired for allegedly stealing from his employer. Maisie, who thinks the missing sausages are the reason for George's dismissal, feels responsible. She then learns it is the theft of shillings from the cash box that butcher blames on George; Maisie sets out to discover the truth."The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is an easy to read book that is very appropriate for younger readers. The vocabulary and sentence structure of "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are not complex. Many children in the target age group - 9 - 12-years old - may be too sophisticated to enjoy this simple story. However, younger readers in the 6 - 8-year old age range may enjoy the story; it is also quite appropriate for a bedtime read-aloud for preschoolers. The characters in "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are relatable and there are humorous situations that will satisfy younger children's desire that their books have a fun-factor. Marion Lindsay's simple, cartoon-like illustrations are cute and there were enough of them to fulfill my grandson's demand for books having "pictures".If you are looking for an easy to read, simple mystery for your young reader or to use as a bedtime read aloud, you may want to consider Holly Webb's "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence".

MULLIGAN Set in London, England 12 year old Maisie lives in her Grandmother's boardinghouse and aspires to be a detective like her idol, Gilbert Carrington. In her first success she rescues a puppy someone has tried to drown - right there you are either going to want your tiny tot to be exposed to the cruelties of the world or not. I chose yes and my 9 year old had a lot of questions. Like Maisie, she thought the sociopath should be locked away forever. Her rescue she names Eddie and immediately he is breaking the law by stealing from George who is the butcher's delivery boy. Maisie has a series of adventures with a cast of characters - my 9 year old was thoroughly entertained - however she did need a bit of translating from English to American slang. The illustrations are black-and-white illustrations and the time period probably 100 years ago.Readers will eagerly await this spunky, saucy new amateur detective's next caper

Luck have it, two mysteries end up plopping themselves in her lap. First, she finds a drowning puppy, who soon becomes her best pal. Eddie, the puppy, needs to figure out who tried to drown him. Then, Maisie's friend is fired for stealing. This leads Maisie on her second mystery (the one that covers the whole book). What actually happened to the money and how can she restore her friend's good name?My thoughts:This is a very fun book to read. For children that are moving a little past the Nate the Great series and looking for a beginning chapter book, The Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins is sure to be a new favorite. Maisie is a wonderful character with a big personality. Eddie is adorable and just as much a part of the story. Between the two of them, you get some laughs, but also a true mystery solving duo. Maisie is very specific with evidence and how to handle herself. With her trusty notebook, she jots down notes and keeps her thoughts going towards what may have happened. Beginning readers will easily follow along without losing track of clues that have already been found. I read this with my oldest, who is not quite at chapter book reading yet, and she adored it. I'd say that it will hit the 2nd-3rd grade readers best.

A mixture of Asimov, Bradbury, with a little Matheson thrown in for some mystery. I'd recommend strongly for any fans of science fiction, weird fiction, or fantasy. Fast read and hard to put down until the climactic end. Waiting for the next book! Exciting, daring adventure with an entire galaxy of characters, each with their own fascinating stories, and their impact on Bruce Opin, just another injured soldier.
