Complete tool that is easy to use By Ellen Rondi My husband and I both enjoy trying different wines but have not had a good way of organizing our impressions of different wines or what we paid or where we bought or tasted various wines. This simple journal provides an excellent and simple way to detail and record both our overall impression of a particular wine and the detailed information that is necessary if we want to buy a wine again or if we want to comparison shop. On our recent trip to Italy, it provided a great way to record information at wineries that we would likely not remember or find again otherwise.

By MARY.ALDEN This was bought also as a Christmas gift for my husband (along with the beer tasting journal), and it also was very educational and wonderful guide on how to attend wine tastings. We will use all the tips (S's) and the wine glass ratings, and it will help to have our wine tastings events be more the same each time. One more thing I will add to the book is a photo of the bottle and so we will be able to identify the bottle at the store. With traveling a lot we try to enjoy local wines and so this will also help us to be organized.

I wanted to record my experience in the region and its wineries as well as the wine itself." I love the philosophy about understanding that the wine we enjoy is enjoyed more so when we have stories and experiences tied to the wines we have discovered and fallen in love with. This is a great little journal with ample structures in place to be able to quickly record details about the wines, regions and the travel experiences that make each bottle more precious!

I loved the 25 secrets that the author shares in detail with the reader and a great touch to it by the added link that takes you straight to the place to get even more information. My favorite is number 17 Shop and eat at Petaling Market, it is a very long street with a glass roof, it seems that you will be able to shop till you drop day and night. What makes it even more convenient is that are delicious food as well!

In this book you will learn how to act like a local in Kuala Lumpur By Althea This is the most complete travel guidebook in Kuala Lumpur I’ve ever read. In this book you will learn how to act like a local in Kuala Lumpur; the author put a list of areas on where you can eat delicious meal in a reasonable price. I really like this advice on where to party in Kuala Lumpur because I’m planning to visit this place sometime in 2016 to have some fun. Antonio did a magnificent job on creating a very informative book like this and I commend him for that. I highly recommend this book to all the people who are visiting Kuala Lumpur for the first time.

We had been learning about it in school and I was fascinated; the culture, the environment, the people. Obviously a lot has changed since then and that means that the place is much better to visit now. The way the author has written this book is amazing because it takes the form of a list of things to do. I guess it’s a coincidence that this trip is a part of a list. All in all I’m still impressed with Kuala Lampur and I should really start planning that trip.

EDITION EXCEPTIONNELLE

TEXTE INTEGRAL

Unfortunately almost all English translations are horribly edited, mistranslated (especially the engineering calculations) and bowlderized, frequently leaving out half or more of the text! For instance, the title is not "20,000 Under.." as in "20,000 Deep", but as in "Distance Travelled" - once around the world i.e "20,000 Leagues under the Seas".Also is seems to be rarely noted that it is the first half of a two-part series. The second volume is "L'Île mystérieuse" (Mysterious Island), and it contains answers to the mysteries left hanging from the first half.

This kit features fun, crazy characters…animals, aliens and robots that anyone would love to draw and I had lots of fun doing so. The book provides a guide for drawing different shapes of eyes, noses and mouths and a reference guide of how different expressions look and then you have the characters themselves which provide an overall finished copy and then breaks each one down into simple shapes where you then add more shapes in different places and add a few lines or erase a few lines and you have a finished picture in a few easy steps. The steps are numbered, easy to follow and best of all there is no wrong way to draw these zany characters as they are all about being fun which encourages imagination as well as ensuring that no one gets discouraged. The kit provides everything needed to get started on a cool and fantastic drawing experience; pencil, paper, color pencils, markers, eraser, some cool stickers of the characters and forty colorful pages of zany cartoon fun.The kit is designed for children but I found that it I had lots of fun as well and let me tell you that I can’t draw anything at all and I was able to draw some pretty funny pictures with these characters and the more I drew them the more confident I became and then I set about changing a few things here and there and letting my imagination run wild. Then my granddaughter got in on the action and she had so much fun she took the kit away from me, but she does draw me some amusing pictures in return. So if you are looking for an entertaining way to encourage a child or even yourself to use your imagination, then this is a fun way to do so and the kit keeps everything together in a magnetically sealed book which keeps losses and clutter to a minimum.

This is the best of both worlds. They learn to draw head shapes, expressions and more in an easy step by step process! The book gives the idea of a fun, whimsical creature and the steps to draw it. The get an art lesson and get to be creative too! LOVE IT!PLUS it all comes in a neat, magnetic box that keeps everything contained.Great Gift Idea!

By Hello Happy We have some little artists in our home, and I want to encourage that, but worry that they won’t be able to transition from their doodles to serious artwork in the future. When I was young and trying to draw, I didn’t understand that most artists draw out the basic shapes and then fill in the details. This book and kit comes with an art set, and magnetic closing case. I especially like how the book shows how to draw simple cartoon-ish shapes, and then fill them out into a cute character. I think it’s a good skill for kids to learn while young, plus they are having a lot of fun making their own characters.

This time Nova was SEW, SEW, SEW By THE HOLEY ONE Having had seven back operations I can imagine how Nova might feel after having her stomach sewn-up three times, her wound, the result of being stabbed by a mobile plant with a poisonous tentacle. It should have only needed to be sewn-up once but she failed to follow the advice of her fellow Bounty Hunter to remain still and get plenty of rest. Hard to follow that advice when man sized Scorpions in large numbers are attacking in dark catacombs on a planet that doesn't permit hi-tech devices...or weapons. Following that fight they discover there are other Bounty Hunters also trapped underground with them. These were unwilling to share a promised bounty to whomever was first to retrieve a forbidden statue and tried to eliminate Nova from the competition. After teaming up with some other Bounty Hunters, who she hoped were a little less bent on killing her and a fellow Jagged Maw Bounty Hunter she discovered while fighting off the Scorpions, they find a way out of the tunnels only to run into a large band of Reapers. These Reapers seem to be a cross between Vampires and Zombies. They're strong, fast and hungry. Like Vampires and Zombies a bite (or any exchange of body fluids) is not only deadly, it will turn you into one of them. The Reapers also have the ability to quickly heal after almost any wound but are susceptible to a well placed head shot. After defeating these Reapers, by no means an easy task, (their numbers have grown by "Turning" many earlier Bounty Hunters who fell for the same Bogus Mission), our small team now confronts the ultimate obstacle to their escape. A Super Robotic Warrior with amazing weapons and the ability to mend itself promptly after sustaining any damage from return fire. I normally don't like to reveal too much of the story line, especially the ending, so I'll stop here. There's got to be more to this great series so you'll have to trust Nova and her old & new friends to "live to fight another day". You've got to wonder how much more this poor dear woman (who by her own reckoning has killed more than several hundred) can tolerate. In a desperate attempt to meet her ultimate goal we learn she is planning to break INTO a prison no one has yet to escape from in order to learn a secret that she hopes will finally free her from the oppressive Human Confederacy. In my review of Book Six I said that was the fastest I'd ever read a book [two days]. If you check the date on that review you'll see it was Jan 18th, 2016, the same as this review. I've set a new "Personal Best" by reading Book Seven and writing the review in just one day. These books are that good; I can't put them down. Review by "THE HOLEY ONE"

I'm not sure how you can continue to improve on the storyline, but you constantly surprise me with the ongoing story of the life of this beautiful person, and her adventures. Needless to say, I couldn't put it down once I got started. I am looking forward to further adventures.

From the first page to the last in the series there is NEVER a dull moment. Action! Action! Action! That's what I'm talking about! I've stayed up late trying to get thru the books. They kick bleep.

Riveting and hilarious By Montague Catway In this absorbing sequel to Doubled or Nothing, Alex and Anya, along with CIA agents and other shady types, are at it again. The action takes place in many locations: Britain, South Carolina, Arizona, Washington, DC, other part the US, and a few exotic Caribbean locales. This time, the duo battle Al Qaeda, which is creating a diabolical biological weapon of mass destruction. A fast-paced thriller, the story is laced with humor that will have you rolling on the floor--even amid the horrible deaths of enemy operatives by alligators, Glocks, drones, and many other means. One delightful heroine of the novel, is the intuitive, ferocious, and lovable dog Muffy, who saves our heroes' bacon more than once.Things really come to a head when Alex and Anya visit the secret island where Al Qaeda is manufacturing its venom...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Sequel By Hyrax Far too often, the sequel doesn't live up to the original. In this case, Esby maintains both the fast-paced excitement of his first thriller, leavened with his usual dose of unnecessary puns. And as a bonus, one can discover what Ashley Cooper and Charles Mystic have in common. (helpful hint: neither one is a nepot)

A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, by Samuel Johnson

From the Inside Flap In 1773, the great Samuel Johnson-then 63-and his young friend and future biographer, James Boswell, traveled together around the coast of Scotland, each writing his own account of the 83-day journey. Published in one volume, the very different travelogues of this unlikely duo provide a fascinating picture not only of the Scottish Highlands but also of the relationship between two men whose fame would be forever entwined. Johnson's account contains elegant descriptions and analyses of what was then a remote and rugged land. In contrast, the Scottish-born Boswell's journal of the trip focuses on the psychological landscape of his famously gruff and witty companion, and is part of the material he was already collecting for his future "Life of Samuel Johnson, the masterly biography that would make his name. Read together, the two accounts form both a unique classic of travel writing and a revelation of one of the most famous literary friendships.

Wasser In the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, Boswell successfully brought together his two worlds--that of Scotland and that of London. Samuel Johnson is a microcosm of London--with its sophistication, its mental energy, its style, and its prejudices. Boswell was able to bridge, reconcile, and even merge the two worlds by his unwavering reverence for Johnson, and his unshakable belief in the essential goodness of his native Scotland and its inhabitants. Boswell did not try to explain away Johnson's idiosyncrasies (or even his faults) as somehow the result of some misunderstanding on the part of their Scottish interlocutors, and he did not try to disguise the nature of the Scots to Johnson. Boswell also was not embarrassed by the impression Johnson made on the Scots, nor the Scots on Johnson. He simply let everyone be who they were, and assumed the best on everyone's part. Boswell clearly embodies the best of both worlds. The book is charming in the anecdotes and the reported conversations. I did have much difficulty in distinguishing many of the Scots from one another, as they almost all seemed to be named Mr. M'Leod. However, that probably could not much be helped as the clan name was (is?) so prevalent in the Western islands of Scotland. It was of much interest to see how important the concept of hospitality was in those days before instant communication. The travelers could expect to have meals and lodging provided by their social peers wherever they happened to travel. This book does not provide many descriptions of the geography or scenery of the Hebrides, but is more a memorandum of those with whom Boswell and Johnson dined, and stayed, and conversed. It would be fun while traveling in Scotland in the twenty-first century to have a companion book setting out the route and the stopping places mentioned in the Journal, with references to the particular passages referring to each place, annotated for what has happened to any landmarks that are no longer there, or are substantially modified.

M Mills They go together like a horse and carriage or Currier and Ives or Mason and Dixon., There names are enshrined in the halls of British literary immortality Most of us know the life and career of Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) through the pen of James Boswell (1740-1795) the Scottish lawyer who wrote the famous "The Life of Dr. Samuel Johnson). Now in this excellent volume by Everyman we see a new aspect of the two famous friends. This book contains two different books. The first is Dr. Johnson's ":A Tour of the Western Islands of Scotland." by Dr. Johnson. It is a somewhat dry but occasionally amusing account of the three months he and Boswell toured the islands off the western coast of Scotland. Johnson from Litchfield in the English Midlands was sixty-three at the time of the Hiberian ramble of three months in the autumn of 1773. He did not like to leave his friends and home in London where he was famous for his Dictionary and his many other literary works such as the poem ":The Vanity of Human Wishes.": Johnson gives us a tour of the various cities he visited focusing on the life of the Scottish highlands which at this time was a rough and wild landscape peopled by many folks who spoke only the Erse language. Johnson did not believe that ":Ossian" was based on an ancient work but was the creation of James McPherson. Johnson is noted for his acerbic wit, great learning especially in Latin and Greek and his strong Christian faith. He was a Tory and monarchist who was against American independence. Johnson was a bear of a man who endears himself to the reader with his vivid descriptions of men and women he met on his trip. James Boswell the young Scottish barrister's book ": The Journal of a Tour of the Hebrides": is much more readable than Johnson';s book on the Scottish tour. Boswell was a seasoned traveler who had traveled throughout Europe when he and Johnson made their trip to Scotland in 1773. He related countless anecdotes of Johnson and the interesting Scotchmen and women they met on this tour. The book is filled with colorful anecdotes such as Boswell';s amusing depiction of Johnson riding a small sheltie pony and a long section dealing with the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie following the battle of Culloden fought in 1745. This Everyman volume is a delight for those interested in Scotland, the lives of Boswell and Johnson and good written style. It serves well as an introduction to two of the most famous authors writing in the English tongue. Recommended.

Bonaveria is not what you expect By Richard Stones This fast-paced fiction, by the author, Ken Collett, is full of intrigue, peril, with twists and turns, in Bonaveria, a fairytale kingdom somewhere in Europe. The author is very creative and develops this well organized "romantic" story around not only a beautiful princess but around her brother, the prince, as well. Both grow and mature through life-threatening challenges. Kristina, the princess, and her 'danger-double' Christina, are inseparable. Hate and greed are countered with love and compassion but like Parzival, Wilhelm Meister, and Faust in German literature, "Bildungsromane", all the key characters grow and develop into responsibility citizens. The novel is both suspenseful and uplifting. Keep on writing Ken.

Every puppy hopes for a loving family and a loyal master, but not all dogs are so lucky. Some dogs are destined to come from the wrong side of the tracks, regardless of how they start out. Jack was such a dog. He was placed into a dysfunctional family, dominated by an abusive teenager. Jack remained locked in his fenceless prison for more than half his life, until his master decided he was no longer wanted. Abandoned on an isolated island, Jack figured out how to survive. He created a new life for himself, a life far different than what he had hoped for. Jack endured hunger, thirst, heat, rain, mosquitoes, and the wrath of other animals. When he became the victim of a vicious attack, he struggled for every breath, hoping to be saved before it was too late. Rescued by strangers, Jack gets a second chance. He finds his way to a forever home, to a family struggling with grief at the loss of their beloved dog. Technically, Jack is a rescue dog, but in truth, he provides a life line to his adopted family as much as they pulled him out of his own dire circumstances. Jack’s life is a story of survival and triumph, of new beginnings and redemption. Now They Call Me Jack is a tenderly written novel based on true events. Jack tells his own story, with poignant truthfulness and good humor.

Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle, by Katie Coyle

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—With the rapture predicted by the Church of America having passed, Vivian and Harpreet are two of the few who know the truth: that the rapture was staged and the believers who were chosen are either missing or dead. Can they stop Pastor Frick and the church's mad grab for power and control over society? Or will this rapture really be the beginning of the end. Vivian and Harpreet are idealistic teens who will stop at nothing to reveal the truth in this sequel to Vivian Apple at the End of the World (HMH, 2015). The characters are well rounded and believable and represent multiple personalities and ideologies. The plot is fast paced but difficult to follow for newcomers to the series. Religion—the lack of faith or unwavering belief in it—is a central component to the story line. Readers will be questioning their own belief systems and asking themselves just how far they would go to uncover the truth. Fans of the first volume will want to read this thought-provoking continuation. VERDICT A great addition to YA collections.—Elizabeth Speer, Weatherford College, Weatherford, TX

Review "Like its prequel, Katie Coyle's ostensibly YA novel Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle examines pretty heavy themes — spirituality, faith, love, and how doing the right thing can be really hard, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it."—Cosmopolitan “An utterly chilling look at what happens when a dying world so desperately wants to believe in anything to survive.”—MTV.com "The characters are well rounded and believable and represent multiple personalities and ideologies...Readers will be questioning their own belief systems and asking themselves just how far they would go to uncover the truth."—School Library Journal "Coyle adeptly handles an exceptionally multifaceted plot, easily seguing from snarky social criticism to heart-pounding action to stomach-fluttering romance, creating a breathless whirlwind that keeps the pages fying until the very end. A distinctive, complex, and thoughtful page-turner certain to leave readers clamoring for more."—Kirkus "Unpredictable and unique, this book wil leave readers in awe, aspiring to be as brave and graceful as Vivian Apple herself."—VOYA, Teen Reviewer "Nonstop twists and breathless action flirt with crossing the line into absurdity, but that's just part of this sequel's appeal. Fans shouldn't hesitate to continue Viv's quest along with her, and they'll be satisfied with how her mission to save humanity from fear-fueled delusion plays out."—Horn Book Magazine "As before, Coyle takes an intriguing premise, covers it with questions of faith and loyalty, adds a gallon of cynicism, and keeps it moving...Along with the questions about religion and consumerism that are in the forefront of the girls' quest, tucked away are important insights about human nature."—Booklist * "Coyle dials back the urgency of her debut, adopting a more languid pace while still delivering plenty of action...As Vivian and harp attempt to solve the mystery of the faked Rapture in an effort to expose the Church as a fraud, Coyle again offers searing commentary on present-day religiosity and consumerism."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Bristol Vivian Apple and her friend Harp are currently on the run, after confronting the heads of the charismatic Church of America that has a stranglehold on every aspect of American life in this dystopian novel. Since they've lost their car, most of their possessions and Vivian has sprained her hand, they seek refuge in San Francisco with Vivian's half-sister, Winnie, who has joined a radical militia movement to take down the Church, as well. The movement is headed by Amanda, a tech whiz who is now paralyzed from the waist down due to the Church, and who is eager to take violent revenge. The girls' parents are either dead or missing in action, so there's no help to be found there. Though Vivian and Harp are somewhat grudgingly allowed to stay with the rebels, they decide to take action independently: mainly sneaking into the Church compound to see Vivian's boyfriend, now a charismatic spokesman for the enemy and their friend, Dylan, the former boyfriend of Harp's brother, who's also turned pro-Church. The girls decide to publicize their knowledge via blog, and also hope to derail the rebels' plans to bomb the compound, but will they be able to do so before the apocalypse? The new reader is introduced to a dizzying array of plots and subplots about the upcoming Rapture and the New Orphans, Magdelening, the Angels, the New Messiah and for all I know, the man from Mars who likes eating cars because I stopped trying to keep up with everything that was already established in the first book. If you've already read the prequel, however, this won't faze you. However, there is minimal character development of both the primary and secondary characters in this one. Many new characters are introduced, several of which I would have liked to meet in more detail. The action seemed to follow a cycle of confront/back off/make out/escape. The subject of religious extremism would seem to be an easy one to parody, but there isn't much humor to be found here. This is the second book in a series, though, so perhaps things will change in the next one.

A Sequel That Lives Up to the First Book By Erin (The Hardcover Lover) FTC Disclaimer: I received a free galley (ARC) of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion in any way.Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle picks up right where Vivian Apple at the End of the World left off. Viv and Harp are now in San Fransisco, Viv has met her older-half sister, and she's just realized that her mother in in fact, alive. It's a lot for a seventeen-year-old to handle, but what happens next really messes with Viv and Harp. The two teenagers aren't just teenage runaways now; they are considered fugitives, and the Church will stop at nothing to find them.So does Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle live up to Vivian Apple at the End of the World? I'd say yes! It's just as fresh and strange as the first book because The Church of America is still going strong, and it's up to Viv and Harp to stop them. There's a little bit of everything in this book - flirting, romance, familial bonds, crisis, anarchy, and death. There's also a lot of action in this book, and I could see readers of series like Veronica Roth's Divergent devouring it.Yes! Some of your favorite characters from the first book are back. And some of your least favorite characters from the first book are back, but Coyle also introduces readers to a lot of new characters in Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle. There are two new groups readers will be meeting during this book, and yes... a lot of new names! I won't lie to you and say that I was able to remember all of them, but for the most part, Coyle does a good job at keeping all of the new and old characters in the book and updating readers on the events going on with them while Viv and Harp come up with a plan to take down the Church of America. So if you're looking for something different to read this fall, reach for Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle or Vivian Apple Versus America if you're in the UK. It's definitely not a book I would have read on my own if it weren't for receiving an ARC of the first book, but its action-packed sequences and real human emotions had me hooked. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the histories of religions or fans of science fiction and dystopian novels.

If you haven't, you might find yourself lost. Just about all the world building was done in book one. Now, this is a nice follow up to the first book. We rejoin all our favorite characters and add a couple not-so-favorites into the mix. Note that this one isn't so much about the rapture. It's more about getting the truth out there. There's some danger, a little mystery, and a little more from the Book of Frick. For me, Vivian wasn't very exciting in this one. She was overshadowed by her best friend Harp. I found I wanted a lot more Harp and a lot less Vivian. But over all, it was an entertaining book. Just missing a little oomph!(By the way, there's a great tease about an astronomical anomaly that is NEVER explored. It's a shame because it would have been an exciting thread to follow. Maybe in another book?)

  • Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by English author George Eliot, first published in eight instalments (volumes) during 1871–2. The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829–32, and it comprises several distinct (though intersecting) stories and a large cast of characters. Significant themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Although containing comical elements, Middlemarch is a work of realism that refers to many historical events: the 1832 Reform Act, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (the future King William IV). In addition, the work incorporates contemporary medical science and examines the deeply reactionary mindset found within a settled community facing the prospect of unwelcome change. Eliot began writing the two pieces that would eventually form Middlemarch during the years 1869–70 and completed the novel in 1871. Although the first reviews were mixed, it is now widely regarded as her best work and one of the greatest novels written in English.

From Library Journal Though not out of print, this popular title is being added to the venerable "Modern Library" line to coincide with a PBS Masterpiece Theatre miniseries. Along with the full text, this edition includes an introduction by A.S. Byatt. All that for $15 makes this a bargain.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "No Victorian novel approaches Middlemarch in its width of reference, its intellectual power, or the imperturbable spaciousness of its narrative."--V. S. Pritchett

Review "Broadview Press and editor Gregory Maertz have produced a text whose rich but judicious contextual annotation, notably highlighting Eliot's deep immersion in German culture, makes this a crucial edition of what is arguably the greatest Victorian novel of them all." (Michael McKeon )"Gregory Maertz's fine new edition of Middlemarch allows readers to consider the novel in relation to a range of documents—reviews and other writings by George Eliot, contemporary reviews of the novel, and contextual material. This additional material both enriches our reading of the novel and its concerns and expands our knowledge of the period." (Mark Turner )

Wonderful, compelling book By Shelby Miller I took up this book because it was on a booklist of the 100 best books written, and I have to agree. It took awhile to get into it because there's a great deal of expository writing at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll be introduced to some fascinating characters in the town of Middlemarch.Dorothea Brooke is a young woman about to take a much older husband, determined to find purpose in her life by assisting him with his life's work, a book which is to a definitive guide to all the mythologies of the world. When she begins to suspect her husband's work is little more than empty piffle, how will she find her way?Mr. Lydgate is a hotshot young physician determined to do great works from the small town of Middlemarch. Thwarted by small town suspicion and politics, and increasingly saddled by debt incurred by a pretty young wife, how will he cope as his life's dream slips away?Fred Vincy is the son of a town merchant determined to see him made a gentleman. He's paid for Fred to recieve a gentleman's education at Oxford with the intention that Fred will join the Church. Fred knows the Church isn't for him, but isn't sure what else to do, nor how to tell his father his education was for naught. These are just three of a huge cast of characters, all of them fascinating in their own way as their lives intersect. The book feels more like a documentary than a novel, and you grow to feel as if the characters could be your own friends and neighbors. Highly recommended, I know this is going to be one of my favorite books.

This is the greatest novel written in English By Joanna Daneman Yes, that is a strong statement, but I believe Middlemarch to be the best novel written in English. And English is a rich language, overflowing with worthy works from both sides of the Atlantic, India and beyond. The only novel as a close contender on my list is Jane Eyre, with its fearsome symmetry and romantic passion.George Eliot has been the bane of students everywhere who suffer reading Silas Marner in high school. But later on, you, like me, may develop a taste for the classics and this book will reward you richly. The story is about Dorothea, a young, idealist woman, born to a good family with a modest fortune of her own. She is a prime catch on the wife market--money, family name, good looks. Her parents are deceased and her friends and uncle seek to pair her up with a local baron as the ideal mate. But Dorothea, bookish, religious and dreamy, has other ideas. She chooses, instead, a superannuated cleric who finally decides to marry as he feels mortality and ill health upon him. Casaubon, the vicar of a nearby rural church is a good match except....he's old, ugly and what the heck is he doing marrying such a young beauty. But Dorothea, who's imagining a sort of superior father figure who could "teach you even Hebrew, if you wished it" wakes up to far less than a reality of marital bliss. And there's an added complication created by her unworthy husband that has dire consequences for the young Dorothea. The subsequent examination of marriage as a partnership in hell is written with stunning modernity. Eliot not only creates the disastrous marriage of Dorothea to Casaubon, but also pairs, as a comparison, Lydgate, a doctor and his frivolous, vain, uncaring wife. The relationship of marriage to society is never more well drawn, but the internal suffering of people trapped in loveless marriage is written with sympathy and cunning insight. Eliot herself had a live-in relationship with Henry Lewes, who could not divorce his wife. She undoubtedly wrote from personal experience. The insight into human nature, such as jealousy, disappointment, recrimination, loss of trust and a feeling of desperation are themes that anyone who has ever been in a relationship will recognize as truth. If you find classic literature hard going, watch the mini-series created based on the book. Then, knowing the general plot, you might enjoy the structure and language of the novel more.

It was so very thick, the print so small, the pages so thin! It looked dauntingly long and dull. But when I finally picked it up out of a sense of obligation (after all, I majored in English, and it is a highly acclaimed classic) I was amazed to find myself laughing out loud on the very first page!Dorothea, Eliot's heroine, is SO very earnest, SO idealistic and ardent! She would never be so tawdry as to fuss with her hair and dress, or wear (gasp!) jewelry in public! She is interested only in bettering the lives of the poor in their neighborhood (you could visualize her at the fore of a modern anti-war protest). But when her sister draws her into trying on their mother's old jewelry, the pure beauty of an emerald ring inspires her to decisively choose it as her own. And she stubbbornly ignores any inconsistency between that decision and her ideals. But her idealism traps her into marriage with a man who is not at all what she believes. She sees him as a paragon of learning, questing the seas of knowledge with fearless curiousity. In actuality, he turns out to be a cautious and small-minded scholar, drily obsessed with minor points of criticism on others works. Poor Dorothea strives to find ways to hold constant in her love in the face of ugly truth. And when she meets young Will Ladislaw, a man of similar idealism and energy, she fights to stay on her moral high ground. Thank goodness the dry old scholar dies! But even after death, he manages to poison the possibility of Dorothea and Will ever making a life together.Around this couple swarm their relatives and acquaintances, and others quests for their best lives. Each couple and each character is amusing and absorbing in their own way.Eliot's characters are introduced and drawn so very well that each personality is fully believable and real. But beyond that, Eliot looks at all of them, the best and the worst, from a viewpoint of loving and gentle amusement. Her pithy comments are hilarious, but never malicious. She draws the reader into her own frame of mind, and invites us to look at the variety of our fellow humans with compassion and laughter. In spite of its length, and several dizzy plunges into despair, this is a light and lively story, very readable and heartwarming.

The characters really stand out, the story is fast and believable, the action in overdrive and the ending is definitely not predictable, but there’s one huge, glaring error that keeps me from giving this five stars: The author left the Florida reconstruction storyline on a cliffhanger. I get that it’s a subplot and all attention is on the main story, but it’s still disappointing. I won’t add any spoilers, but the grand finale battle between all these different factions is really hyped up and then just left hanging for the next book in the series. What gets me is that the cliffhanger was completely unnecessary. It was a great story and I would have bought the next book any way. I probably still will, just to find out how it ends, but please, no more teasing!

Well-written survival story with believable characters and witty dialogue, but the description is misleading. This isn’t an EMP book. The EMP knocks out power and a few other things at the get go, but it’s basically just a mild inconvenience for the rest of the book. I don’t even think it’s mentioned again after the first chapter. There was also a scene where ammunition “cooks off” in a fire and shoots up their car. Seriously? That just can’t happen in real life. Rounds may explode, okay, but a box of burning ammo isn’t going to fire off in every direction like a Wile E Coyote cartoon.Other than that, the rest of the book seemed well researched. Definitely worth the read and I even learned a few things.

Peters. While there has been a move to do less and less book reviews, I still like a good story and definitely a good book. The main problem I have is, like most movies, there is nothing new under the sun. You know, the world ends, people struggle to get home or back to their families, and for the most part survive. Most books and movies end with them thriving and not just surviving.Maybe that is just a fact that sells books and movies. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it is just a thing. A series, even though it follows the same premise, leaves you with enough to get you hooked for the next one. Well, that is just great because that is EXACTLY what happened to me with "For Us The Living: Judgement Day".I had been looking for a decent book, not series, that features a more military format simply because I like them. I do not mind the mother/father/sister/brother getting back to their home, but I wanted a little more tactical development in a book. R.A. Peters did not disappoint."Judgement Day" started off with an apocalyptic scenario and two main story lines. The first is of SFC Danielle Walker, part of the U.S. Army SOCOM (Special Operations Command) on a rescue mission in Yemen when an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) hit. This resulted in many systems not working unless they were truly EMP hardened under Military Specifications (MILSPEC).At the same time, her husband, Peter Dixon, starts off in Jacksonville Beach, Florida with Danielle's daughter Rachel. Even though chaos ensues, Peter has been somewhat preparing for things like this scenario. The issue is, he was not prepared for what was coming and did not seemed prepared to also have his stepdaughter in tow. Both Danielle and Peter try to continue doing their task at hand regardless of the strenuous and arduous journeys they both encounter. Danielle must help her team and encounter many other military groups to aid in this endeavor. Meanwhile Peter must insure that in all things, Rachel stays safe. After all, I cannot imagine what Danielle would say if something happened to Rachel on Peter's watch. My difficult task is not to spoil anything about the book. Other than what you can read on the Amazon website and any other reviews, I will say this, the facts are fairly well researched, there are exceptions, and the story has some good tidbits of takeaway knowledge. This book should be considered both post apocalyptic and... science fiction. As I mentioned earlier, there is nothing new under the sun, the exception is the concepts used within this story and hopefully the rest of R.A. Peter's books.
