Our homes can become holy places that prepare children to grow up in the Lord (D&C 109:15). This children s picture book tells the story of Lily, a young girl who is helping to make her home a holy place by the things she does each day. The engaging illustrations by LDS artist Dan Burr depict Lily s family in various settings that show how children can contribute to the spiritual environment in their home as they say their prayers, work together, read the scriptures, eat dinner as a family, make good decisions, observe the Sabbath day, participate in family home evening, share the gospel, and learn to love one another. Parents will find additional helps and resources to reinforce these concepts on the author s website. These resources are designed specifically to complement the themes presented in the book.

The artwork is beautiful, realistic, and descriptive, engaging an imagination. I read this with my nine year old daughter and she related really well to what was being said and the combination of the words and pictures brought these important concepts down to her level.I love how each page talks about one way to bring the Spirit into our homes and most pages had either a scripture or quote by a General Authority at the bottom to support it.This is specific to an LDS audience, but anyone can appreciate the different ways to bring a family closer together and make the home a haven of peace.*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review*

We follow a young girl, Lily, as she shares ways her family is living the gospel in her home. These include praying, celebrating, working, scripture reading, receiving blessings, eating together, making good decisions, unplugging from the world, honoring the Sabbath, holding Family Home Evening, gathering with friends, showing love towards each other and looking to the temple.I loved the illustrations! They help bring the story to life. I also enjoyed the scriptures and quotes from General Authorities that were included throughout the book. This is a book that families can enjoy reading together and will spark discussion on ways to strengthen homes and families.I also enjoyed visiting the website (www.HomeCanBeAHolyPlace.com) and reading the ways that others have expanded on these topics, including the unique dinner schedule, Family Home Evening ideas, family motto and making Christ the center of our homes. There's more, too, and it's just getting started! I love to hear what others are doing and am grateful when they're willing to share so that I can implement their great ideas in my own home. This is a book and website definitely worth checking out!I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

The world can be such a hard and cruel place some days but our homes can be our refuge. We can make our homes a place where love prevails. This book does a fabulous job of reminding us how. As we work together, pray together, learn together and play together, our families and our homes become stronger. This book has a music album that goes along with it. Jenny Oaks Baker is an amazing violinist and her music just makes me feel. The violin is such a beautiful instrument. I love the track list on this album. This music is so soothing and peaceful and so, so beautiful. My favorite was Jesus Once Was a Little Child, I think. The world needs all the beauty it can get and this music and this book (together or separately) definitely add to the good things of the world.

Dead Men Tell No Tales, by E. W. Hornung

About the Author Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet perhaps best known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Adventure and suspense! By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Mr. Cole’s search for wealth in the 1851 gold rush in Australia leaves him dispirited and broke. Taking the next available ship back for England, the Lady Jermyn, he falls in love with Eva Denison, a beauty traveling with her exotic Portuguese stepfather. Disaster strikes when the ship catches fire, and Cole finds himself the sole survivor. Bereft after the loss of his true love, Cole seeks anonymity in London. But something is very strange; is he going mad, or is someone following him? If so, what do they want? Before the story is over, Cole with uncover a ghastly conspiracy, and propel him on an adventure that may cost him that which he loves the most.Ernest William Hornung (1866-1921) was an excellent Victorian author who is now mainly remembered for his Raffles stories (if he is remembered at all). Before Raffles, though, in 1896 Hornung wrote this wonderful story. This story is exciting, with a wonderful mixture of adventure and suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat!I must add one word of warning, though. Being such an old book, it does reflect a society with different standards than our present one. Particularly, the story does involve an African character who is repeatedly referred to by the now discredited “n-word.” So, a certain amount of forbearance is required when reading this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dated adventure By Khirul This is a mid-nineteenth century story of adventure on sea and land. It's certainly weak compared with Stevenson or Melville, but is fine for those who enjoy or study the period.

3 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely horrible!!! By J. Witmer Ok, this was the WORST book I've ever tried to read. Yes, that's right, "tried" to read. I didn't finish it because I couldn't get beyond Chapter 5 and I finally just gave up!! Good thing it was cheap. Do NOT waste your time.

“The Ephesian Artifacts” is a blend of history, action and adventure featuring the death of Cleopatra, the fall of Saigon, and the search for artifacts hidden beneath the sands of the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey. The race for the priceless artifacts pits the Black Pope ( head of the Jesuits) against modern-day Amazons and artifact seekers from Austria and the United States. The bones of the Virgin Mary, the Artemis star, and the writings of Jesus are believed to have been hidden centuries ago in Ephesus, which is visited by over a million tourists each year. Praise for The Ephesian Artifacts: “…It kept me enthralled…particularly the Knights Templar and the various machinations of the Roman Catholic Church in relation to its inception and early history….smooth, a nice balance of detail and rumination….The narrative carried me, the story was complex and provided a wonderful jigsaw puzzle on an imaginary table I found hard to leave….I would love to congratulate the writer for a work that has been so carefully conceived and structured and created.” Dan Odegard, writer, agent, editor, consultant, bookseller and publisher.

This book will command your attention from start to finish. If you are a fan of the "The Davanci Code" or similar books, I would especially recommend that you purchase Mr. Ledray's work of art.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bullseye! By Dexter Pehle Ledray has woven a page-turning spider web of mystery, intrigue, and history pitting church, mythology and greed in conflict. I could not put the book down.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dan Brown, eat you heart out By Giovanni Nocturna A story Dan Brown wished he had written, Mr Ledray know how to 'finish' a story, the day Mr Brown apparently skipped in literary class. Well rounded, with intimately authentic descriptions of the locales, it has a strong sense of adventure and tension without being overtly harsh on the existing world entities which this work entails - again unlike Mr Brown, this is fiction, not misleading propaganda. A v.good read, I look forward to a sequel.

In "India Charm Offensive" the author offers a lighthearted recount of time spent adventuring through exotic India, flying helicopters for a company contracted to its paramilitary forces.

Having no success avoiding disease, toxic moonshine and lava spiced curry, he also had to survive homicidal drivers, jungle dwelling rebels and, at times, rifle fire. Despite routine encounters with mayhem and death, he also found something approaching charm. Not in the culture of chaos, but in the dark eyes of a mahila, who called India home.

Beauty and Bedlam Collide in East India.

"Sir! Go up, go up, go up!" shouted Babeesh, my crew chief, with big saucer eyes and betel nut juice down his chin. "You need to go up!"

Lurching forward in the seat next to me, he thrust his filthy pointy-finger at the ground. His words quickly smothered by what sounded like we’d hit a sudden pelting hailstorm, though we flew through cloudless sky.

The rifle-toting troopers in back were shouting too. Although shouting in Hindi, it was clear they also wished for me to go up. Adding my vote made the count unanimous. But an Apollo rocket we were not; as the rotor blades clawed at the loose, humid air, we only gained altitude at a rate just better than a tethered balloon.

"Those buggers are shooting at us," I said. "We’re being shot at." Not that anyone onboard needed this illuminating observation.

There seemed to be no shooting from the south, so, banking the helicopter nearly on its side, I angled away in that direction, and the helicopter slowly—too slowly—climbed.

By Voracious Reader I saw this book on Fire and Ice Book Promos, and originally I thought it would just be about flying and such. However, I checked the preview and ended up reading on Kindle Unlimited, and this is such a great read! The book is about the author's experiences in India, too, and his experiences are so detailed and interesting to read, as I've never been to India. And there are some parts that are so funny I'm still chucking about it. You'll see what I mean when you get to the parts about the monkeys, and the part about the persistent bellboy that has now probably learned his lesson about knocking. Great read!

Andersen "India Charm Offensive" is a wonderful story full of the sights, sounds, and smells of the infamous subcontinent. As a writer myself and a pilot who has flown a fair bit in India, I enjoyed the stories and can say it's clearly written by a professional who has "been there." Mr. Sobotta's artful command of English, combined with his talent as a classic story teller makes this book a fine ride.Perfect for anyone looking for a good adventure story or who wants to learn more about India...Required reading for any non-Indian thinking about going to work and live in India...All in all, a GREAT book.cma

By Werner Daniel A book not only for helicopter pilots or someone considering to move to the Indian subcontinent but for everyone who likes to read an entertaining, funny and sometimes unbelievable story based on facts rather than fiction. Michael Sobotta sure knows how to make you feel part of his 'adventure' in this country so foreign to us westerners.A brilliant read from beginning to end.

This is an excellent series, especially for young readers By Manda Jane I wasn't sure what to expect when I realized that the author of this series was so young.;) I was pleasantly surprised with how well she writes and how imaginative the series is! McKenzie does a fabulous job of bringing to life her fantasy series set in the magical island of Benotripia, bringing to life the story of Roseabelle and her friends as they fight evil and look to save their island from the Darvonians. This is an excellent series, especially for young readers! (though, it can be enjoyed by all ages).I received this book from Cedar Fort in exchange for my honest review

This book is a great read (although perhaps a little dry at times when she is reviewing some of the service aboard certain ships). Definitely worth a five star rating, but the printing took it down a star. The cover picture is stretched and the print is basically a copy and paste with no formatting.

  • Kim is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author Rudyard Kipling. It was first published serially in McClure's Magazine from December 1900 to October 1901 as well as in Cassell's Magazine from January to November 1901, and first published in book form by Macmillan & Co. Ltd in October 1901. The story unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881, but before the Third, probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India, its teeming populations, religions, and superstitions, and the life of the bazaars and the road."

Kim: Illustrated Platinum Edition (Free Audiobook Included), by Rudyard Kipling

Amazon.com Review One of the particular pleasures of reading Kim is the full range of emotion, knowledge, and experience that Rudyard Kipling gives his complex hero. Kim O'Hara, the orphaned son of an Irish soldier stationed in India, is neither innocent nor victimized. Raised by an opium-addicted half-caste woman since his equally dissolute father's death, the boy has grown up in the streets of Lahore: Though he was burned black as any native; though he spoke the vernacular by preference, and his mother-tongue in a clipped uncertain sing-song; though he consorted on terms of perfect equality with the small boys of the bazar; Kim was white--a poor white of the very poorest. From his father and the woman who raised him, Kim has come to believe that a great destiny awaits him. The details, however, are a bit fuzzy, consisting as they do of the woman's addled prophecies of "'a great Red Bull on a green field, and the Colonel riding on his tall horse, yes, and'--dropping into English--'nine hundred devils.'"

In the meantime, Kim amuses himself with intrigues, executing "commissions by night on the crowded housetops for sleek and shiny young men of fashion." His peculiar heritage as a white child gone native, combined with his "love of the game for its own sake," makes him uniquely suited for a bigger game. And when, at last, the long-awaited colonel comes along, Kim is recruited as a spy in Britain's struggle to maintain its colonial grip on India. Kipling was, first and foremost, a man of his time; born and raised in India in the 19th century, he was a fervid supporter of the Raj. Nevertheless, his portrait of India and its people is remarkably sympathetic. Yes, there is the stereotypical Westernized Indian Babu Huree Chander with his atrocious English, but there is also Kim's friend and mentor, the Afghani horse trader Mahub Ali, and the gentle Tibetan lama with whom Kim travels along the Grand Trunk Road. The humanity of his characters consistently belies Kipling's private prejudices, and raises Kim above the mere ripping good yarn to the level of a timeless classic. --Alix Wilber

From Booklist Rudyard Kipling’s adventure novel is luminously visualized in this adaptation. The story line remains true to the original and follows Kim as he departs from his boyhood home with a Buddhist lama and embarks on adventures as a boy spy. Kumar’s watercolor scenes and expressions lend authentic views of Kim’s moods as well as his surroundings. However, this is more illustrated classic than graphic novel, as aside from the visual scenery, little is left for the images to convey that isn’t spoken by the text. Accessible and continuing to be a story of interest, this book nonetheless has a place in most collections serving classics. A bit of front matter sets the story’s context against the author’s own life, and a bit of back matter provides interesting details about spy tools of the era. Grades 5-8. --Francisca Goldsmith

Review "I highly recommend Campfire’s comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in  a way that excites kids about classic literature."— Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

When I finally got around to it, I first read the Amazon.com reviews and noted they seemed to divide into two camps. The first camp was overwhelmingly favorable; the other was guardedly favorable. The reviews that were guarded said, in the aggregate, that Kim was enjoyable for various reasons, but that it bore the baggage of racism and imperialism. For these and other reasons, Kim must be seen for what it really was. And there were some reviews were quite critical -- describing Kim as a plotless, meandering exercise in boredom. The Kim that I read had a plot. A common plot. Those who have read Huckleberry Finn would recognize it. It is a coming of age novel placed about 130 years ago.Imperialism and racism. Well, yes -- if you are viewing Kim from the viewpoint of a revisionist political commentator. Kim's India has a white ruling class and a darker skinned ruled class. This social structure is strikingly similar to the historical relationship between the British and the Indians during the Raj. And Kim is caught up in the Great Game, much like the historical Great Game. The British did want to continue to hold India from enemies foreign and domestic and Kim reflects that historical point of view. It was, after all, written during the Raj and within chronological shouting distance of the Game.Racism. Yes. British characters, often presented in most unsympathetic ways, do have a racial stereotype of the Indians. And, the Indians have a racial stereotype of the sahibs. But the Indians are not what they want to seem to the British -- they are much, much deeper. Babu is a Babu -- if his mask is all the reader sees. Strikingly like real life. When caught in the web of current social generalities, Kim is certainly a suspect tome. But Kim is literature. And, as literature, it is a tour de force of language and description and imagery of an India and a Raj long gone. Its main characters are all human and complex and the opposite of stereotyped. The interplay between the values and growth of the lama and the growth and experience of Kim is compelling and warming. When all is said and read, the lama has found his river in the only place it could be found. And Kim, I think, has found himself in the dust of an Indian plain ... an Indian in a Englishman's skin and an Englishman who has the gift of seeing himself as the Indian others see him.If you are interested in India, pre- or post-Raj, do yourself a favor. Settle down with Kim and travel the Great Trunk Road, winter in Simla, and seek the River of the Arrow with your lama. Don't allow modern, political generalities deny you a wonderful adventure.

Van Court 'Kim' is a work that could receive very different reviews depending on the biases of the reviewer.Any professor from the English department of my alma mater (Rutgers) would insist that 'Kim' should never under any circumstances receive any praise as it is racist, glorifies imperialism, was writen by a dead white male, and lacks a political philosophy acceptable to a modern progressive liberal. Well, I suppose that it lacks any real political philosophy (except some very general complimentary comments about democracy) and Rudyard Kipling is dead, white and male, but the first two comments are completely wrong and and this sort of review is the voice of ignorance.A staunch traditionalist, conservative would insist that it is a canonical work that should be read by every school child as a superior example of English literature and the epitomy of the written Enlish language. This is equally ill-informed and ill-considered.'Kim' is a wonderful story of an orphan in India (the part that is now Pakistan; Abid-please consider it a gesture of respect that I mention the change in geography) in the late 1800s. Kim is the son of an Irish soldier raised by locals, familiar with the customs and languages of the Hindus and Muslims of the area who gets recruited by the British to spy for them. Kim acts as a guide for a Tibetan Buddhist priest who is on a quest in India, broadening his knowledge of the cultures of his world and giving him an excuse to travel even further. He comes upon his father's regiment, and the officers of the regiment arrange for Kim to attend a 'proper' British school. Throughout the story, a British spymaster is helping Kim receive an education (both formal and in the skills needed to serve the British rule in India) and arranging for Kim to carry messages and run small but important tasks for him.Throughout the book, the only Indian group that is treated with disrespect is Hindus who have sacrificed their own culture's customs in order to get ahead in the British goverment. Frequently, the low opinion of the British held by the Indians (Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist) is mentioned, and is usually pretty funny. The other European powers that are mention in the book are not treated with respect, but that is understandable (at least to me in context; other readers will have to make up their own minds).Kipling's passion for the land he was raised in and his love for the peoples he was raised with is unmistakable, as is his love/hate relationship with the British government (N.B. he was not knighted in a time when most prominent authors were; he was entirely too candid about the British rule in India and the Crown's treatment of her soldiers). The language of the book is a little hard to follow, between regional loan words and the English of the time, but a patient and persistant reader will find the effort rewarded.A great spy novel, read it for yourself and don't trust the critics who speak based on assumptions rather than knowledge.

A captivating clasic of Indian Literature By Gerrit Ruitinga Kim is probably one of the best books ever written on India and certainly within the league of E.M.Forster and Paul Scott. This little treasure describes India with a love and power of observation that is absolutely captivating and charming at the same time.Kim is a rogue like Huck Finn and Oliver Twist. He is the man for all opportunities and is called the "Friend of all Mankind". He is neither Hindu nor Muslim, he is neither Buddhist nor Christian. Given his background as the orphan son of a Irish military man and a local girl he is a little bit of everything. In Kim Kipling personifies all the good of Inida while playing down the contrasts, in particular the religious one; he shows us what India would have been like in an ideal situation of mutual tolerance.Apart from these philosophical considerations, Kim is simply a very well written book. Every passage betrays Kiplings background as a poet and sometimes passages really need to be reread for their beauty. His observations are striking and one realises from time to time that it is not the writers imagination about a period long gone; he was actually part of that period. One thing Kim is not: a childrens book. Like Siddharta ,a child may be the main character, but the book is far to philosophical and aimed observing intricate human behaviour to be of much interest to children. I would even maintain that Kim should not be the first book to read about India. However, one of the best reads I had in a long time.

Khe and her new sisters thought defeating the lumani would make life better for everyone. Instead it brings a growing chaos--for which Khe blames herself. Returning to Chimbalay in hope of stopping civilization's collapse, she finds the lumani had been holding dangerous secrets--the kind that can destroy not only her society, but her world. Secrets that have fallen into the wrong hands. Like Khe, Ashes and Rain blends science fiction and fantasy to create an alien yet relatable world. The companion novella, Gama and Hest, reveals the secret history of Khe's world.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully written - truly enjoyable book By LLT I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Khe 2 Ashes and Rain is a wonderful continuation of book 1 Khe. Beautifully written. Alexis has a way of describing things so vividly, you see the book as you're reading it as if you're watching a movie! Imaginative and different. I felt this book was very metaphysical, allowing us to look at ourselves and others with soul colors rather than our eyes. A story of Khes journey to be herself even though that 'being' seems different than everyone else or even what she imagined for herself. I highly recommend this thought provoking and truly enjoyable book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ashes and Rain is terrific and thought provoking By Supified Ashes and Rain is Alexes Razevich's third book and I'm lucky to have had a chance to read all three, because they're all really good. If you have not read her others, do so, but especially Khe, since this is the second book in that series. You really cannot grasp this book well if you start with book two, because the author has created a completely alien world and a great deal of explanation comes in book one. There is a lot to love about this book and the world created, because while it is entirely foreign, the author successfully explains it so that you feel familiar before finishing the book ad while book one does most of the heavy lifting there, book two does expand on what book one started. Anyway, enough about book one.The thing that struck be about this book, besides shock that it was even written, is that this book really dives deep into consequence. The first book really tied things up neatly and while it seemed the story was told, this book manages to take that story and really ask, okay what would happen next. When the death star blows up you should get shrapnel on the moon with ewocks (for example, this book has nothing to do with starwars) but the point is so many stories fail to account for the consequence of actions, especially good ones that when this book actually does dive into that aspect it came as an utter surprise to me the reader. The other things this book does really well is moral ambiguity. The first book didn't touch on this subject very much because it had other themes, but in this one we revisit characters and actions which had initially been seen as rather evil and are invited to take another look at it. Sure you can simply call a character good or bad, but the book never leaves anyone so flatly defined, rather even the worst actions of any given character comes with background information and motivation which makes sense, from a certain perspective. Another thing that the story does is explore a morality that is slightly different, if not entirely foreign to our own. Sure we have some things in common when it comes to perceived right and wrong, but we also have a lot of things we would consider virtues which in this world would not be. I really hate to give anything away, but suffice to say it's extremely imaginative. The one thing about this author I've always found a little strange is her endings. They're usually hopeful, actually they're almost entirely hopeful, but they never do so without the hint of further thought and possibility. Khe ended with thirty five dots (if you've read it you know what I mean) and certainly made the story bitter sweet at best. Shadowline played with reality and gave you reason to doubt the narrators interpretation at times and question if happiness is really being achieved. Similarly Ashes and Rain focuses so heavily on consequences and in fact talks about the risks associated with the very actions they decide to take, it is hard to imagine the ending simply being a nicely tied package. You can choose to take it that way, but the author always seems to leave with enough for interpretation.I may be biased as I've followed all of the books this author has written, but I once again must highly recommend her work, you won't regret it.

Ashes and Rain Provides Fertile Ground for Khe's Continuing Tale By Robin Mattocks I thoroughly enjoyed reading the author’s advanced copy for review of Khe 2 Ashes and Rain. A generous amount of suspense and excitement kept me so engaged in the story that I finished reading it in half the time. Khe and the others became real people in my imagination and the settings were so vividly described that I could easily visualize them.A unique, understandable language and unusual communication among the characters and with their physical environment caused me to wonder whether we humans might develop the same in our future. This capability certainly enhanced some of the relationships and connectedness of the characters. The story’s social and environmental issues, quite relevant to today’s world, demonstrate just how the over use of our own natural resources can create potentially unresolvable future disasters.Although the US is slowly improving, after so many years of our own male dominated world, Khe’s female controlled population and culture is my “cup of tea.” It also leaves the question, “what happened to all the males and what is their future?” for another sequel. The plot was well developed and the ending was better than most. Often I feel rushed as a story ends, with it abruptly coming to a halt without sufficient resolution. This ending was well paced and did not leave me unpleasantly hanging, while still allowing unanswered questions for the next sequel.I highly recommend this book and believe that science fiction, mystery and adventure readers will be very pleased.Robin Mattocks
