Pricing very outdated by a ton, way more than expected in a guide book.Wish it covered more of off the main tourist path places.Found the Fodor's and Lonely planet guides much better for this area.

By SaenzMamaBear Found it extremely useful on our trip to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres... it made our trip much simpler, the maps were extremely useful, as well as recommendations of tours and restaurans and shops! We wouldn't go anywhere without it, it is a great book if you plan to visit the Mayan riviera! Highly reccomend checking out Sian Khan and the Tulum ruins!

Truett Like so many others (I presume), the Washington Monument was decided upon over a hundred years ago and then erected in all its simple majesty. With this short documentation, I learned that it took many years of planning, discarded planning and other "flies in the soup" before the majestic edifice would see fruition. This is truly a wonderful and absorbing history of one of our nation's outstanding landmarks. It's astounding that after over a hundred years, this monument is still actually operating (via elevator) to take visitors to the top for a breathtaking view of Washington DC. And this, even after a recent devastating earthquake. Truly a remarkable and thorough history of the Washington Monument, which I recommend to everyone--especially for our younger generation.

Essential reading for students in Deaf Studies programs or students in Interpreter Training Programs for the Deaf By Amazon Customer This is a story of intrigue, temptation, dysfunctional families, mystery and redemption. Of pasts being exposed and righting wrongs. This story is instructive, entertaining, and quite suspenseful in its focus on an unsolved murder of a young deaf girl and a small rural community grappling with its shameful past."Backspace" is a provocative read which invites layer upon layer of insights into the world of deafness. But, it is more than just a mystery. Foremost, it is a story that dispels many myths and shines a light on many universal truths about people who are deaf. As a baby boomer raised by deaf parents who came of age in the 1940's, I can relate to the story quite intimately--the story resonated with me in many ways as I, too, am an interpreter for the deaf. One of the characters in this story, an interpreter for the deaf, adds another dimension; having a protagonist, the intense doctoral student who is deaf and the earnest interpreter--both characters crucial to the outcome of the unsolved murder. The fabric of deaf life is one that is truly unique and this e-novella explores the issues of deafness throughout the story. The advent of hearing aids, assistive listening devices, e.g. fire alarm, nightstand clocks with lights, etc. are explored and they weave their way into the story to introduce readers to these important technological advances in the lives of persons who are deaf. "Backspace" is a term eloquently introduced by Dr. Steve Baldwin that explains how visual acuity is highly developed among deaf persons and this cannot be overstated. I will forever be impacted by this phenomenon of peripheral space magnification that deaf people naturally possess. Without reservation, I recommend this e-novella highly and would relish to see this become a movie in the Stanley Gardner tradition with all of its pivots and twists. An excellent read!Jennifer Berg, CSC, Level V Interpreter-Texas.

BaldwinAs an avid reader of novels, but a reluctant writer of such, I found Baldwin’s foray into fiction writing may easily inspire other novices to dive into the world of writing. Generally, I will read the first few pages to determine whether or not to stay with it; if there isnt a “hook” I don’t read the rest of it. This one did indeed hook me to the very end. Baldwin’s organization of the story was a clever combination of introducing common beliefs or practices within the deaf community along with a story line that manages to hold the reader’s interest throughout the book.Compared to previous deaf fiction writers’ attempts to publish their work, Baldwin has done a masterful job of setting the right examples to follow for aspiring deaf writers. Baldwin’s novella is a tapestry of a sequence of storytelling with true facts that are practiced or or observed throughout the culture of the deaf community. While the deaf reader is bound to delight in reading this novel, the true test is whether or not the non-deaf community will find it equally compelling; I believe it is. As for the final guess as to the guilty suspect in this “whodunit” novel, I blew it and guessed wrong. Author Baldwin scores big here and more power to him in his future novels. I would hope he will develop into a deaf writer who is not stuck into only a genre of deaf character-led novels, but novels that any reader would become captivated to the end of every story.I give this a 4.5 star rating, as Baldwin has to be motivated to write another book. Kudos, sir.Timothy A. Jaech, retired deaf educator and columnist

Double Ds Exposed: Sequel to “Eyes from Above”, by Howard R. Milsted Jr.

About the Author Howard R. Milsted, Jr. is a mechanical engineer who owns and operates a successful mechanical contracting business in suburban Philadelphia for over sixty years. He lives in Southern New Jersey with his fourth collie, Maeve. Howard is extremely close to his family and is a man who finds it difficult to be idle. Over the years, he's made many clocks and other intricate projects which have found their way to relatives and friends near and far. Howard initially scoffed at the prospect of becoming an author. When he started writing; however, he found that putting his life into words through two romantic novels: “A Real Love Story” and “Eyes from Above” became a passion that just wouldn't go away . . .as was his enduring love for his beloved wife, Claire. His love of his collies (he's owned four) led him to pen the richly animated children's book, “Just another Collie”. Howard's most recent novel “Double Ds Exposed” , completes the circle of his life story. He thinks he's finished writing, but you just never know!

A quick read of the first few pages betray the fact that this was clearly published by a vanity press. No self-respecting editor would allow this type of writing anywhere near a bookshelf. Forgiving the fact that the title is exploitative, the first pages are at best poorly written, but more accurately are misogynistic, describing women by their physical attributes. The author, a self-described "breast man", clearly disrespects women, as well as the literary arts. I am left to wonder why any book purveyor would offer such drivel to its distinguished customers. Shame on the author for his misguided attempt at writing, as well as his terrible attitude towards women and READERS at large.

It is a shame that one person skimmed the first few pages of this book and than makes a comment that is so far from what this book is even about or what this Author is even about....this is a must read book and really you should read all of the books the Author has written .... To the one who made thw comment without reading thw whole book and only skimming a few pages...you are nothing but a rude disgrace of a human for writting such a comment without reading the whole book or even reading any of his other books ...

Ebook PDF Online Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise, by Oscar Hijuelos

Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos, is a luminous work of fiction inspired by the real-life, 37-year friendship between two towering figures of the late 19th century, famed writer and humorist Mark Twain and legendary explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley.

Hijuelos was fascinated by the Twain-Stanley connection and eventually began researching and writing a novel that used the scant historical record of their relationship as a starting point for a more detailed fictional account. It was a labor of love for Hijuelos, who worked on the project for more than 10 years, publishing other novels along the way but always returning to Twain and Stanley; indeed, he was still revising the manuscript the day before his sudden passing in 2013.

The resulting novel is a richly woven tapestry of people and events that is unique among the author's works, both in theme and structure. Hijuelos ingeniously blends correspondence, memoir, and third-person omniscience to explore the intersection of these Victorian giants in a long-vanished world.

From their early days as journalists in the American West to their admiration and support of each other's writing, their mutual hatred of slavery, their social life together in the dazzling literary circles of the period, and even a mysterious journey to Cuba to search for Stanley's adoptive father, Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise superbly channels two vibrant but very different figures. It is also a study of Twain's complex bond with Mrs. Stanley, the bohemian portrait artist Dorothy Tennant, who introduces Twain and his wife to the world of séances and mediums after the tragic death of their daughter.

A compelling and deeply felt historical fantasia that utilizes the full range of Hijuelos' gifts, Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise stands as an unforgettable coda to a brilliant writing career.

My recent studies have been of Mark Twain and the late 1800s and early 1900s in American history. While browsing a favorite bookstore, Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise caught my attention. I purchased a copy and could not put it down. The book was published posthumously; the author died too soon to finish it after 10+ years of work. Based on a few established facts, he has expanded the story into a novel that records the friendship between Mark Twain and the famous explorer, Henry Stanley, of Stanley and Livingstone fame.In 1859 or 1860, Henry Stanley and Mark Twain met on a Mississippi River steamboat on which Twain was the pilot and Stanley a newly arrived immigrant from Wales. They struck up a friendship that lasted for life. Both shared a love of books and became famous authors. Stanley served in both the Confederate and the Union armies. After the war, Stanley's career followed in Twain's footsteps, employed by the same newspapers and viewing the same American scenes, but not at the same time.Stanley became famous as an African explorer when he found Dr. Livingstone, alive and well after a long period of no news. Stanley was employed at a handsome salary by King Leopold 2 of Belgium as his personal explorer of central Africa. Leopold mislead Stanley as to his motives in Africa. The King played on Stanley's faith to motivate him while, in fact, the King was interested in exploiting Africa to amass personal wealth. The King's double-dealing haunted Stanley for the rest of his life as did the diseases he contracted in Africa.Stanley died before Twain. The title of the book refers to their spirits entering heaven together. A very enjoyable book.

By J Moulton I was very surprised to discover in the afterword by his wife, that even the letters between Twain, Stanley and Tennant were all fabrications of the author. Hijuelos had spent many years researching these characters and the book reads as if it is all quite true. A very intriguing piece of fiction. It feels like a non fiction novel that might have been written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Twain and Stanley's lasting friendship By UpstateASB I receive advance reading copies (ARCs) from publishers for review purposes from time to time and I always make it a practice to read them in order of publication date. I do this so my reviews will be as timely as possible and roughly coincide with each book’s release. So when I finished The Early Stories of Truman Capote, I flipped to the next ARC on the list and came up with Oscar Hijuelos’ Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise. Okay . . . so . . . the book I read immediately preceding the Capote collection was Lynn Cullen’s Twain’s End. Were the book gods really going to make me read two Twain-based novels nearly right in a row? Apparently so. If I weren’t so OCD about my hard and fast publication date rule, I would have just put the Hijuelos aside for a month or so and come back to it later, but I’m a little hard-headed about these things so I hunkered down and prepared to dive back into the world of Samuel Clemens. If you read Lynn Cullen’s book, you know that her Twain was a rancorous dude not much interested in giving a rodent’s posterior about anyone but himself. So I wondered what kind of light Oscar Hijuelos was going to shine on the old coot. A radically different one as it turns out.Twain & Stanley Enter Paradise orbits around the actual, lifelong friendship of Mark Twain and Sir Henry Morton Stanley, controversial African explorer and supposed utterer of the legendary “Dr. Livingstone, I presume” line. Twain comes off more like the revered figure most of us imagine, a better family man and friend than the one Lynn Cullen would have us know. He’s a relatively considerate pal, a devoted husband and father, and just an all-around much nicer bloke to hang out with. However, Stanley, not Twain, is the real star of the show here, as his voice is the principal one Hijuelos uses to narrate his sprawling tale. The novel spans at least 50 or so years and we’re with Stanley every step of the way in his life, beginning with his arrival in New Orleans as a penniless orphan from Wales, to his first meeting with Twain on a Mississippi River steamer (Twain then being known only as Samuel Clemens and prior to his immense literary fame), to the sweltering jungles of both Cuba and Africa and finally to pastoral England. We even backtrack a little to Stanley’s childhood before his abandonment by his mother and his eventual orphandom (okay, so the jury’s still out on whether “orphandom” is actually a word).Hijuelos employs several narrative devices to relay the intertwining stories of Twain and Stanley. At times he writes in the third person, giving the novel the feel of a Stanley biography instead of a fictional interpretation, and I frankly had to remind myself on a multitude of occasions that this wasn’t a biography. Other times the epistolary voice takes over in the form of letters between Stanley and Twain and correspondence exchanged between Twain and Dorothy Tennant, Stanley’s portraitist wife. Yet other chapters are set forth in the first person as either Stanley’s or Dorothy’s journal entries. This constant tone shifting has the whole thing coming off as slightly schizophrenic, and truly the thing works best when it’s simply Stanley doing the talking from the pages of his diary. For those expecting Hijuelos’ usual exuberant, Cuban-American themed fare, Twain & Stanley is a divergence, although the two men do venture together into Cuba searching for Stanley’s potential adoptive father (NOTE: The Cuba jaunt is completely fictional, not based on any actual trip taken by the pair, although much of the book is rooted in the facts of their relationship as best could be gleaned from Hijuelos’ extensive research). In all fairness, the author died unexpectedly before he ever submitted Twain & Stanley for publication so one can only presume that he didn’t get the chance to further shape, polish and winnow down his manuscript prior to his death. According to his wife’s afterword, Hijuelos had been fascinated by Henry Morton Stanley since his teenage years, and the research and travel that form the underpinnings of this book were a labor of love that spanned more than twelve years. You have to wonder though, had Hijuelos lived, would he be completely satisfied with the rambling Twain & Stanley we’re left with or would he still have some tweaking to do?I’m torn on how to rate this one: it’s better than three stars, but not quite deserving of four, so let’s call it three and a half, then because I’m forced to, I’ll round it up to fit Amazon's format.Full Disclosure: A review copy of this book was provided to me by Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley. I would like to thank the publisher for providing me this opportunity. All opinions expressed herein are my own.

How do you fight a menace that strikes without warning - that disintegrates flesh and blood and stone to mere chemical atoms? Men flee in blind panic from the merest rumor of a new attack, and even the Spider - dodging the death blasts - can find at first no weapon with which to combat this new and devastating evil that obliterates its victims in the fraction of time between two heartbeats! This is the challenge Richard Wentworth, alias the Spider, faces as he plunges into the cauldron of crime exemplified by Satan's death blast.

Albany, New York, is the first city to face obliteration. Then the devil moves on to other cities of New York State and finally sets his diabolic sights on Manhattan, demanding a ransom of $75 million to spare the most densely populated city in the United States. The master of men faces two grim challenges: What mysterious force is so powerful that it could detonate a victim into dustlike motes unrecognizable as human? And who is his satanic majesty, the devil?

Once again, Norvell Page delivers a riveting account of the Spider's urgent crusade to crush a supercriminal who challenges the combined forces of law and order. As never before, Richard Wentworth hurls himself into a hellish cauldron, prepared to sacrifice his reputation, his life, and even his very soul to defeat a foe to whom mercy is a foreign word. When his faithful servant, Ram Singh, turns against his master, Wentworth understands that he faces an enemy who can reach into his inner circle. But how can the Spider run his quarry to Earth when he is gunned down and incapacitated while the devil and his lethal minions run unchecked?

Nick Santa Maria reads "Satan's Death Blast" with the crackling intensity you have come to expect of his superb talent. Originally published in The Spider magazine, June 1934.

If you are a fan of comics, you can see where many of the golden age creators got their ideas. I started off with the Baen Books The Spider Master of Men collection: Robot Titans of Gothlam. These inexpensive kindle books are a treat because you get a glimpse of history and you get to read quality stories from a bygone era when things like values and knowing right meant something. But I digress, on to the story. The Spider has to battle this villain dressed as Satan who is destroying the city around him. Richard Wentworth, The Spider, has to utilize all the resources available to him to take down this incredible enemy. I liked the way the story unfolded and unlike many of today's popular fiction, there's no hidden political message or preaching. It's action all the way where good has to conquer evil. It's classic storytelling and it's author knows how to make a story unfold and develop.

A tiny amount in a cigar kills an important man and leaves a massive crater behind. Cities have vital areas blown up and then an army of vagabonds move in to loot them at Satan's command. When his bullets fail to kill Satan, he handicaps The Spider with a severe bullet wound in his thigh which makes even walking difficult, and later a head wound. But it does not end there as Ram Singh tries to kill him then Nita betrays him to the police. How can Richard Wentworth rally help to fight the fiend when the forces of law are convinced he is behind these atrocities? This is The Spider at his best. Some excellent back up stories too.

I'll make that clear before I get into the nitty-gritty of my thoughts on this piece. In all honesty, I wanted to give it the full five stars, too, but I felt it was missing something. I'll get to that in a moment.First, I want to talk about the good. This is a book that proposes a future of a planet much like Earth that's unlike any science fiction I have read. It's a world built after the fall of a society much like our current civilization, one that's more in tune with Nature and consciousness. That's what makes this book a page turner. It presents a very interesting picture, and it explores the potential of what consciousness can do once it is honed and interwoven in society as something of a norm to focus on (if that makes sense).John Michael Greer's prose, as well, is top-notch. He has an eloquent manner of speaking, one that gently flutters off the page in a very conversational tone. It's the kind of prose you'd hear from a well-read buddy as the two of you are spending a warm Summer night staring at the stars, watching a meteor shower. What's holding this book back though? Characters. The characters and their motivations just aren't interesting enough. There's something too coldly "logical" about them that wrings of lacking emotion. There doesn't feel to be a sense of inner turmoil in any of these people. A great threat looms on the horizon that threatens their very way of life, and all we can get is a mild sense of worry out of these people. "Danger? Hmph. We better study this. Amery, go find an encyclopedia. I better read a passage on what we're dealing with, then go calmly contemplate."If it wasn't for my interest in this future Greer was positing, I would have put this book down and moved on to something else. These characters are just too bland. They're more like pieces of scenery or objects to move the theme along. That said, I'd recommend this book for someone deeply interested in consciousness exploration and scifi. If you're looking for something enthralling on a human level, this wouldn't be the book.

It is changing rapidly, and we will need to examine ourselves and our motivations, as we journey to possibly survive, as a people, a culture, a species. Wait - that's US... reboot...This story of a world far away, with a very simplified social system, and a linear history, is useful, reminding us that we really do need to be aware of the past as parent to the future, and respond to that understanding in adult ways; we preserve the past to enable the future, but what we preserve is limited by time, mice and silverfish, by our honesty and by our vision of what is needful. We censor the future by our choices today.Ah, well, earth abides, and this book has a bit to do with understanding patterns, recognizing oneself, and being a different kind of person at the end of the day.A good legible read, with a deep story and a surface story, and it ends a bit soon for my gustatory wishes. I would have preferred to roll around on the moss a moment longer... but how?

The Fantasy of Eridan By Ashtar Command SPOILER WARNING, THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS“The Fires of Shalsha” is a science fiction story written by John Michael Greer. The plot is set in the future on the planet Eridan. The human colonists, who have only dim memories of Earth, live in towns on the Northern continent called “shelters”. Life on Eridan turns out to be pretty unsafe. All technology above a certain threshold is strictly prohibited, as the main fear of the colonists is the return of Shalsha or The Directory, an oppressive regime which used sophisticated battle drones to enslave the population. Long after the destruction of Shalsha, unmanned drones roam the landscape, attacking colonists at random. Apart from the drones, the woods are swarming with cannibals, who seem to be human outcasts rather than aliens. The only native forms of life on Eridan are plants, a few sea creatures and a kind of insects resembling fireflies. The ban on most forms of high technology is enforced by an elite corps known as the Halka, whose revolvers are the most sophisticated weapons on the planet. The Halka use choppers to move between the shelters, while ordinary citizens apparently walk on foot. The Halka Order reminds me of the Jedi of “Star Wars”, and long chunks of the novel deal with Halka training in meditation, telepathy and mind-melding techniques. Visionaries, however, are strictly prohibited and usually shot! Despite these authoritarian tendencies, the colonists at Eridan put up with the Halka knights, since everyone sees them as their last and best defense against drones, cannibals and renegade technicians who want to restore high technology (and perhaps the dreaded Shalsha). At the end of the novel, one of the protagonists reveal the real history of Eridan. The colony was founded by mad scientists from Earth, which had been destroyed by industrial civilization. The purpose of The Directory was to develop new forms of bioengineering, with the aid of which Earth (and industrial civilization!) could be restored. However, the task required massive amounts of slave labor, leading to an oppressive regime “for the greater good”. Eventually, the enslaved colonists rebelled against the ruling caste of scientists and technicians, and created a decentralized society overseen by the Halka. The goal of returning to Earth was abandoned. The novel is easy to read, but feels tedious. The characters are one-dimensional and never really “come to life”. There are also a couple of loose ends. For instance, the cannibals are suddenly written out of the story at the very end, where it looks as if peace has been restored all over the Northern continent. What happened to them? The “shelters” have access to electricity and fuel for the helicopters, despite all high tech being verboten. It's not even clear what “the fires of Shalsha” are supposed to be – the term is given at least two different meanings.Still, I found the novel interesting. John Michael Greer is a prolific writer (mostly of non-fiction) and blogger, a profile in the peak oil community, and a practicing magician. Until recently, he headed a small Neo-Druid order, the AODA. Sometimes, “The Fires of Shalsha” clearly reflect Greer's own opinions and interests. It's safe to assume that the author really believes in the paranormal powers described in the story. The critique of modern civilization, high technology and simplistic notions of “progress” are other typical Greer themes. He, at least implicitly, also criticizes the rigid and traditional character of the Halka Order. When faced with a group of renegades who want to restore The Directory, the Halka seems strangely paralyzed by ancient customs, bureaucratic red tape and prejudice against visionaries (one of whom tries to warn the order of the impending danger). This is similar to Greer's emphasis on “dissensus” in politics and “balance between force and form” in occult work.On one point, the novel differs considerably from other works or comments by Greer. The story ends with the Halka and the colonists changing their minds about high tech, seriously considering a return to Earth themselves (the starship of the original mad scientists is still in orbit, high above Eridan's surface). Note also that the plot is set on another planet. Usually, Greer emphasizes that humans, due to peak oil, are forever doomed to remain on Earth, and that no further space exploration is possible. Technology based on fossil fuels, uranium or exotic forms of energy such as fusion, is also out of the picture. Indeed, Greer wants to launch an entirely new genre of SF, which he has provisionally dubbed “post-industrial”. It seems “The Fires of Shalsha” is therefore somewhat anomalous in the Greerian corpus.Perhaps it's the closest thing the author will ever come to a real fantasy? ;-)

After reading the first page of the introduction to my students over the intercom on the morning announcements, they were hooked! The details and factual descriptions left the students curious and anxious to hear more. Longer than Ginjer’s other books, this book greatly appealed to my upper elementary students, but would work well as a read aloud for younger children, too. The pictures were so real, it was as if they were about to jump off the page! This is a great resource for teachers when instructing on rain forests, habitats, ecosystems, and animals in general. The bonus of a map in the back of the book was great, too. Awesome book! I’m hoping this is a first in a series. Kids and teachers both delighted in this one! - M. Smith, Literacy Specialist, VA

Tess has always been tormented by waking visions that make her question her sanity. When the orphanage she lives in burns down, she decides to face her fears and find out once and for all what is wrong with her. She believes the truth must lie with her parents, and so, armed with only an address and phone number, Tess travels to a crumbling mansion in rural Quebec, where she discovers evidence of mistreatment of mental patients. She also makes an unlikely ally and gradually unearths her family’s sad history—and finally accepts the truth about her paranormal powers.    Part of the SECRETS—a series of seven linked novels that can be read in any order.

Unquiet Past, The (Secrets), by Kelley Armstrong

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—In 1964, a girls' orphanage burns to the ground and its seven oldest residents, each armed with a cryptic clue about her past, are sent out into the world to make their way. Each entry in the "Secrets" series of seven linked YA novels details a different girl's rocky start. In Walters's Innocent, Lizzy is offered a job in her hometown, where she discovers that her father, having murdered her mother, is still doing time in the local prison. Drawn to him despite warnings from her seemingly kind employer, the protagonist discovers a cover-up involving nearly the entire town. Although it gets off to a slow start, this volume delivers some tense moments as Lizzy makes her way through the local web of lies. Armstrong's The Unquiet Past features a creepy supernatural element. Tess's search for the meaning of her waking visions leads her to an abandoned mental hospital, a series of illegal experiments, and a boy who's looking for answers of his own. These installments target reluctant readers with their short sentences, plot-driven events, and light character development. VERDICT Purchase where historical fiction is popular.—Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TX

Review "The realistic landscape of racist microagressions that plague Métis Jackson is heartbreakingly matter-of-fact. A compelling mystery." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-07-15)"Tess’s spunk, determination, and sense of adventure will turn readers into allies immediately. It’s hard not to root for someone who has nothing and is ready to pursue any possible clue at all costs...Armstrong does an excellent job navigating difficult issues, including racism and mental illness...A compelling story that’s difficult to put down." (CM Magazine 2015-09-04)"Part of a series of seven linked but independent novels, The Unquiet Past can stand on its own as intended but will likely entice readers to seek out the rest of the series. This fast-paced paranormal thriller will appeal to fans of Caroline B. Cooney and Lois Duncan. Tess is inexperienced and naïve, but despite her secret visions and fear that she is going crazy, she is a strong, independent young woman who learns from her mistakes. The story is grounded in time and place, with just enough historical details on Metis, French-language rights, and psychological research to enhance the story." (VOYA 2015-10-01)"Features a creepy supernatural element. Tess’s search for the meaning of her waking visions leads her to an abandoned mental hospital, a series of illegal experiments, and a boy who’s looking for answers of his own." (School Library Journal 2015-10-01)"This would make a great read aloud as it would stimulate discussions and questions around mental health and medical ethics. Learning a little about the past in this historical fiction may help students understand the need for effective well-being initiatives today." (Ms. J's Book Reviews 4 School Libraries blog 2015-09-28)"Readers will find the mystery of what was going on at the abandoned house both intriguing and scary. That Tess and Jackson operate so independently will appeal to the age group, too. Bonus points to Armstrong for highlighting the history of mental illness in Canada and Campbell’s despicable treatment of depressed women. Settings of small-town Hope, the restrictive orphanage, the spooky mansion that holds so many scary possibilities and the McGill campus will hold readers’ interest and inspire them to reach for the other books in the series." 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bizarre more than creepy By Andrea Heltsley I am a huge fan of this author. HUGE FAN! This book . . . Hmm . . . it was one of the strangest books I've ever read. I can't say that I have an opinion good or bad about this book. It was just average, but definitely different. The author was going for creepy, but I found it more to be bizarre. Overall, a different read, but okay.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Rather Disappointing By Pamela M. Emanuel I'm a serious Kelley Armstrong fan, but this seemed rather a cheat. Tess leaves the orphanage where she was raised in search of answers based on an out-of-service phone number and an address, which turns out to be an abandoned house, apparently a psychiatric hospital or the equivalent. She finds a boy at the address who's able to explain anything psych related, and decides to help her unravel her (not much of a) mystery.Predictable, hardly any suspense, rather disappointing......

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. YA historical mystery with paranormal element! By Jennifer 3.5/5 starsI love Kelley Armstrong. So I knew that I had to read this book. It is part of the Secrets series (a bunch of authors each write a book where there is a secret involved). The Unquiet Past is a YA historical mystery with paranormal elements (ghosts/visions/psychic elements). The book is set in 1964, mostly in Montreal and rural Quebec. The narrator is almost 17 year old Tess. She is in orphan trying to uncover the truth about her parentage. When the book begins Tess is in Hope Ontario. She lives in the Benevolent Home of Necessitous Girls. It burns down. This book is definitely a mystery. But I am not sure if I would consider it a thriller. There is a mystery to figure out. but only in the last part of the book do things really happen at a faster pace. Before the halfway point I would also say that there is not much paranormal. But that does have a huge impact on the last half of the book. There is a fair amount of French in this book (since a bunch of characters speak that language). But everything is translated. And it is mostly just a line or two followed by the translation.I don't normally like historical books. But truthfully this did not really feel that historical. It was only set in the 60s. So things weren't that different. The book deals with visions, which I found very interesting. I liked how this helped move the story along. This book was unusual. it was interesting, but very different from anything the author has previously written. But I enjoyed it.
