Two middle aged American women bicycled (most of the way) across Tierra del Fuego in 1984, meeting interesting people and surviving rugged conditions. This challenging trip helped the author exorcise some demons remaining from her failed attempt to sail around Cape Horn in 1975 (see her previous book, Cape Horn, One Man's Dream, One Woman's Nightmare) for an excellent and personal survival story.

Two Women Against the Wind is a compelling true story about two women who set out to do what no other females had—cycle one of the most treacherous roads on the planet. Traversing the 300-miles across Tierra del Fuego is not for the faint of heart, especially if your mode of transportation is a bicycle. Réanne Hemingway-Douglass does a superb job in telling her and friend, Katherine Wells's, story. This inspirational memoir offers excitement, tension, and humor.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION A Hundred Miles from Manhattan keeps alive the memory of thousands of slaves who, centuries ago, took advantage of the night silence to embark on an odyssey in search of freedom. Just one hundred miles to contemplate a different, surprising America, full of anonymous heroes. With polished literary rhythm, Guillermo Fesser masterfully describes the human network that sustained one of the most powerful countries on the planet, and brings us the most personal aromas, colors, and flavors in a beautiful yet overwhelming land that rises above the circumstances as an enchanting territory full of rituals that show us its true nature.

A cien millas de Manhattan (Spanish Edition), by Guillermo Fresser

"Nick Leiber, Bloomberg Businessweek

From the Author 100milesmanhattan.com

To celebrate her 50th birthday and face the challenges of midlife, Jane Christmas joins 14 women to hike the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Despite a psychic's warning of catfights, death, and a sexy, fair-haired man, Christmas soldiers on. After a week of squabbles, the group splinters, and the real adventure begins. In vivid, witty style, she recounts her battles with loneliness, hallucinations of being joined by Steve Martin, as well as picturesque villages and even the fair-haired man. By Timecheck The author is a good storyteller, and like most storytellers, might be accused of exaggerating for the sake of a good story. Did I say drama queen? No, I wouldn't do that, but don't take this book too much to heart. As you enjoy the writing, realize that if you do this walk there will be some physically demanding moments, but most people get through them. The people you meet, both the other pilgrims and the locals, will be the best part of the entire experience. This is true for the author as well, but many stories come from the hard parts.Picture a woman at age fifty, divorced, the three kids out of the house, somewhat on a whim, plunging into the Camino de Santiago adventure. Word gets out about her plans via email and word of mouth, and women of similar vintage start contacting her, asking to go with her. In May of 2004 fourteen women meet in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, most strangers to each other, expecting Jane Christmas to lead them. The author's deft touch for describing the group dynamics are what make this book unique. Some of the time she is walking alone, but still feels the tug of the group. She writes about more negative encounters with locals and other pilgrims than matches my experience, or that of most accounts I have read. I don't know what to make of that. It is easy to read encounters wrong if there are cultural differences. Our experience in the first-class hotels was that they were unbelievably gracious to scruffy pilgrims. But even Jane's negative encounters are related with a wry humor that makes them a good addition to the book.I do recommend this book for entertaining reading, but be aware that she will trod on some toes, and there are those who may feel that some subjects deserve more respect. The author's style reminds me of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. If you enjoyed that, you are likely to enjoy this book.

Every way is valid, but I am distressed about this way By Elizabeth Shoemaker I walked the Camino, from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela, in 2003, in part to celebrate my sixtieth birthday. I spent almost every night in an albergue, or pilgrim hostel. No experience of walking the Camino is typical, and every experience is valid, but I feel very unhappy at Jane's words being given such publicity, undoubtedly giving many people the idea that if they were to do the walk, they could expect to undergo her difficulties. People who choose to walk the Camino are almost all seekers, who by releasing themselves to this experience are hoping to open themselves to new understanding, new ways of thinking, and the magnificent experience of the pilgrimage.During my six weeks on the road I found that one of the great gifts of the Camino was being with these people, from so many backgrounds all over the world, who had chosen to walk. For the most part I chose to walk alone, but it was an extraordinary privilege to be with these people, in the albergues each morning and evening. Toward the end of my time it occurred to me that not since before I had set out had I heard a word of anger or complaint spoken. It seemed that there was a Camino culture to respect and care for all others, to be open to learn from all others, and to create and maintain peace.Similarly in the albergues, one was thankful for what was given. In one albergue there may be no pillows, or in another no hot water for the showers. One night along the way there were dogs barking in a field outside the albergue, dogs that continued to bark for over an hour. It was a remarkable and joyful thing to me that I never heard complaints about such things. One was thankful for everything that was given, and one figured out how to manage without those things we expect to have at home. There was a general recognition that everyone's Camino is different, and everyone will learn something different. I may not choose to make a Blackberry or a cell phone parts of my Camino, and I may not set as my goal to complete the Camino faster than anyone else, but it is not for me to judge the value of what others may bring with them, or what they may choose to do along the way. Certainly it is not part of the culture to label anyone as "nuts."Jane says that she was uncomfortable with what she called "manufactured penury," when people with plenty of money set forth to walk the Camino. I would like to remind her that the Buddha was a prince, with every luxury, before he chose to leave his home and walk in search of his way.

Easy fun read grows tiresome by the end By Norine This is an amusing book that will make you chuckle, especially during the first 100 pages, but I grew tired of it about the time our pilgrim grew tired of her pilgrimage. It should be on the advance reading list of anyone who is thinking of walking the Camino as its unvarnished descriptions of the weather, the trail and the dorms take the romance out of the adventure, and her eloquence regarding the stunning landscapes puts it right back in. One despairs for sisterhood by the time the last page is turned.

By Bookworm Gang This beautiful little book is packed with vibrant illustrations of the plants, animals and butterflies of SriLanka. Lulu and her friends fly to Sri Lanka to visit their friend Princess Jay-Jay. Once there, they get to try lots of different activities and to have a tour from on top of an elephant's back. They also get to eat Jay-Jay's favourite Sri Lankan food. With added facts about Sri Lanka, and labelled names of local animals, this is a great way for kids to broaden their horizons and learn a bit about a different country. I hope Lulu will be travelling to more countries soon.

I agree with that but I didn't like the book as much as she did. I loved the topic of the book and that at the end of the book there are ways to help. My daughter loved the prairie dogs, Annabelle and Angus, and the couple of coloring pages at the end of the book that she made me print out for her. Overall this book was decent and I think most kids would like it.I received a free pdf copy to review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love this book By Amazon Customer Love this book! The text and illustrations are fun! The storytellers are two prairie dogs, Annabelle and Angus, telling about their wildlife challenges. It is a true story about Larry Haverfield and how he helped protect prairie dogs and other wildlife on his ranch. This book is for children but adults can enjoy it as well. It's a great lesson about how just one person can make a real difference.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Explains complex matters in a simple manner By Lynda Dickson - Books Direct "Larry Saves the Prairie" is the story of how one man, Larry Haverfield, took on "the system" to conserve native prairie wildlife. The book dispels common misconceptions and explains how prairie dogs, while considered pests by some, are actually integral to the life of the prairie. Everything must be kept in balance in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem. In fact, the endangered black-footed ferrets actually rely on the prairie dogs for their survival. This book shows children how even everyday people can be considered heroes. With its use of standard text as well as cartoon images, the author explains complex matters in a simple manner, easily understood by children. I would love to see him take on other causes and produce a series of books using the same format. This is a brilliant concept: to target children, whose thoughts can influence adults now and who will themselves be the leaders of tomorrow. The book is illustrated by Rob Peters and is recommended for children ages 4 to 8. It includes two coloring pages, information on how you can contribute to the cause, and the author's story behind the story.I received this book in return for an honest review.Full blog post: http://booksdirectonline.blogspot.com/2015/11/larry-saves-the-prairie-by-matt-bergles.html

This is about Polly who is in an Amish family that decided to move to Texas for a while to work off their house and rent their house in Ohio out. We see how Polly seems to like Cinderella a lot and wants to dress up and has a struggle with that wordly pull. She meets a guy who makes her feel beautiful. She doesn't know if this will be a good thing so she hides it behind her parents' back. So that's what the book is basically about.

Can't wait to go back to see some of the sights described here.Written in an easily readable style with a sense of humour that makes reading a pleasure. Humour can, on occasions, be a bit irreverent and could offend some. Well illustrated and informative. If you want more than the usual guide this is the book to get.

A disparate group of Londoners are brought together by Sweeney, a mysteriously charismatic man of wealth, for a luxury cruise in the South Pacific – they know not why. Sailing far from the normal shipping routes, the ship weighs anchor just off an uninhabited tropical island. Whilst its passengers are ashore exploring, the ship catches fire and sinks beneath the waves. With no means of communication with the outside world and no hope of rescue, passengers and crew must find a way to survive. In the scramble for power that ensues, the distinction between master and servant becomes meaningless as the more ruthless among them clamber to the top. The inscrutable Sweeney, meanwhile, sits alone on a hillside. Coolly aloof, he watches the veneer of civilization disintegrate as his fellows fall prey to fear, desperation, barbarity … As for Silver Island itself, with its lush vegetation and exotic fruits, it had seemed like paradise. But as the days pass, a subtle sense of unease gains momentum, and the realisation gradually dawns that all is far from well in this tropical Eden.

I recently enjoyed The White Voyage by John Christopher By Pete Barber (Author) I recently enjoyed The White Voyage by John Christopher, so I thought I’d give his latest novel a try. As with The White Voyage, this novel deals with the social interactions within a small group of marooned travelers, but unlike the previous story, the action that cuts them off from the civilized world is no accident.Once again, I enjoyed the author’s writing style, filled with fresh imagery and believable dialogue. Taken at face value, the characters could be seen as hard to believe, but the author develops their idiosyncrasies in such a gradual and believable manner that I found myself agreeing that, yes, this is exactly how they would act. I particularly enjoyed Lydia’s decent to her basest personality. The story has many similarities to Golding’s Lord of The Flies. And although the ending seemed rather rushed to me and left open questions about Sweeny’s motives that would have been interesting to explore, this was an enjoyable read, and the journey more than made up for that minor quibble. This review was originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog.

By Happy Amazon Customer I loved John Cristopher's The Tripods (3 Book Series) tripod series but I just could not get into 'Cloud on Silver.' The languaging, the plot, all of it wasn't a great read for me. I found the plot terribly, excruciatingly slow, although the writing was fine. I didn't care about the story or characters at all. Still, you may like this book and I encourage you to use the Amazon "look inside" this book feature and see if the story hooks you. I thought I would love a plot about people on a remote island (sort of like Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None) but it just did not engage. Hopefully you will love this book. Happy reading~*

Milan has always been a choice destination. What Milan has always offered is chic and so discreet that many casual visitors have initially failed to spot its charms. For those who do want to discover Milan's secrets and who are prepared to venture behind the city's somewhat austere façades, the city offers a fine experience.

Milan is culturally rich. The city is home to the world-famous La Scala opera house. There are enough museums and art galleries to keep any art lover happy - indeed the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is one of the greatest European art collections. Though Milan lost buildings during World War II, it has many fine architectural examples from the Roman period through to the 20th century: basilicas, churches, chapels, castles, palaces - even the monumental Stazione Centrale is of historical and architectural significance.

For shoppers, the city's Sunday antique markets and the bohemian villages in the south of the city present another Milan - quieter, more relaxed. The neighborhood stores - the pasticcerie, the salumerie - are a delight. At the other end of the scale, Milan is home to the world's greatest fashion houses: Versace, Fendi, Armani, Dolce e Gabbana. A great number of tourists come here solely for the fashion - to buy, to seek, and to be seen. At certain times of the year, fashion shows are the attraction, at other times the sales, where the promise of a Versace or Armani item at a fraction of the original cost entices shoppers from all over Europe.

With some careful planning, a visit to Milan can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. With art collections to rival those in any other European city and with some stunning Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, Milan will satisfy tourists in search of culture. At the other end of the scale, it is a fun city, with superb restaurants, a lively bar and nightlife scene, and excellent shopping.

A Unique Twist on Shape-Shifters with Fast-Paced Action, Thrilling Adventure, Mystery, and a Bit of RomanceFlo lives an eccentric life—she travels with a popular circus in which the main acts star orphaned children with secret shape-shifting abilities. Once Flo turns sixteen, she must perform, but she’s not ready. While practicing jumping a flaming hurdle in a clearing beside the circus, she spots a dark figure in the trees and fears he saw her shift. The news sends the circus into a panic. In Flo’s world, shifters are unknown to humans with the exception of a secret organization—the EOS, referred to as “hunters.” Hunters capture and kill. They send some shifters to labs for observation and testing—testing they don’t often survive—and deem others useless, a danger to society, and eliminate them. To avoid discovery, shifters travel in packs, constantly moving and keeping themselves hidden. Up until now, the circus was the perfect disguise.Believing she has brought attention to the group, Flo feels dread and anxiety, causing her to make a mistake during her performance in front of the audience—a mistake that triggers a violent attack from the hunters.Flo manages to flee the torched circus grounds with Jett, the bear shifter who loves her; the annoying elephant triplets; and a bratty tiger named Pru. Together they begin a new journey, alone in a world they don’t understand and don’t know how to navigate. On the run, they unravel secrets and lies that surround the circus and their lives—secrets and lies that all point to the unthinkable: Have they been betrayed by the people they trusted most?Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. The Wanderers, by Kate Ormand

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—As long as she can remember, 16-year old shape-shifter Flo has lived a life on the run, moving with the circus and hiding her ability to become a horse from humans and from the "hunters." The circus has seemed a safe, if not highly profitable, place for her and the other orphans in the pack, under the guidance and protection of a trio of middle-age lion-shifters. But now, since she has come of age, it is time for Flo to perform with the adults. Even with the support of Jett, a handsome young bear-shifter who loves her, and even after strenuous practice, Flo is nervous about jumping flaming hurdles. She is even more ill at ease after she becomes aware of the black-clothed men watching her and the other circus performers. When this anxiety causes her to make one small mistake, Flo's world explodes. The circus is destroyed, and she finds herself both prey and hunter. Along with Jett and a few survivors, she joins a small pack of itinerant shifters, running to avoid capture by the hunters, while struggling to unravel the almost unbelievable conspiracy that brought her and others to the circus in the first place. Ormand introduces readers to a large cast of characters, some more developed than others, and she makes their unusual circumstances plausible and exciting. This often-brutal tale unfolds through Flo's narration, allowing readers to experience her thoughts, fears, and developing attachment to Jett. VERDICT The preternatural circus of shifters, budding young romance, and action-packed struggle against evil will appeal to readers of paranormal fiction.—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

Review "Flo and her friends are but poor, lost circus performers—who shape-shift into animals and try to evade governmental capture. Newly turned 16, orphaned shifter Flo is dreading her first circus performance. Alas for her, it's not optional; all of the shifter children who live with the circus must perform regularly as soon as they reach that age. Flo must take a turn like all the others, so after a false start, she takes the stage—not as a girl but as a magnificent mare. Like her boyfriend, Jett the bear, or her nemesis, Pru the tiger, Flo becomes an animal at will. In a modern world of cars and DVD players, the circus shifters live almost medievally, bound under the unkind leadership of the elders, three middle-aged lion shifters. Flo knows that if she leaves, she'll be vulnerable to hunters, government-funded paramilitary forces that are the modern legacy of sworn enemies who have been murdering shifters since time immemorial. So she tolerates the cruelty of her peers, learns to jump through a flaming hoop, and almost has hope for the future when disaster strikes. In a spare first-person, present-tense narration, Flo takes readers through a swoony romance with a massive body count. Despite the potential whimsy of a circus adventure narrated by a shape-shifting mare, this more closely resembles a brutal, angst-drenched dystopia à la Veronica Roth's Divergent (2011) than anything else. (Fantasy. 13-15)" —Kirkus Reviews“The preternatural circus of shifters, budding young romance, and action-packed struggle against evil will appeal to readers of paranormal fiction.” —School Library Journal“The world of shape-shifting characters has just gotten wider with the addition of this novel . . . Fans of supernatural series like Shiver will enjoy this book, with its similar themes and strong love story.” —VOYA Magazine"Filled with excitement and whimsy, The Wanderers is an adventure story about shape-shifters, first love, and the endless search for a true home." —Suzanne Young, New York Times–bestselling author of The Program"The Wanderers is a dark, rich, and original story. I love the concept of humans with inherent shape-shifting abilities, and the circus setting is incredibly vivid—I could smell the musty, musky ring, feel the bright lights burning my skin. Kate has created an intricate and danger filled world that's both cruel and beautiful." —Melinda Salisbury, author of The Sin Eater’s Daughter"An utterly captivating big-top world filled with shape-shifters and dark secrets. I devoured this book! It was unlike anything I’ve ever read." —Amy Christine Parker, author of Gated and Astray"A fresh tale about shape-shifters that is sure to delight and astound." —Danielle L. Jensen, author of Stolen Songbird

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this seems like any normal animal circus By Joana (The Boundless Booklist) For more reviews go to: best-of-ya.blogspot.comSixteen year-old Flo’s life is anything but ordinary--she is just one of many performers in a traveling circus. On the outside, this seems like any normal animal circus, but the secret lies in the fact that there aren’t any actual animals in tow. Instead, the humans shape-shift into their animal forms when it is time to perform. Shifters are unknown to the human world, so when a human spots Flo practicing her routine, panic seizes the circus and anxiety causes Flo to accidentally shift from horse to human in front of an unsuspecting audience. Her mistake unleashes the fury of the hunters (a government run group titled EOS whose purpose is to eradicate the shifters and make sure the humans never find out about them). Luckily Flo and a few others are able to flee in time. Together they embark on a journey that reveals secrets they never thought possible and causes them to question everything they’ve been taught and, worst of all, who they can trust.I thought the entire book was very well written and well-thought out. I really liked the premise of this and the fact that the characters shape-shifted into many different types of animals because the only other books I’ve read about shape-shifters seem to focus solely on werewolves. The beginning is pretty slow, but then everything picks up and doesn’t really slow down until the very last page (it was a bit rushed in my opinion). For anyone that likes a lot of action, this is the book for you. As soon as things go wrong during Flo’s performance the fighting and killing is almost constant (some of it is kind of graphic so be aware of that if it is something you are not comfortable with). There was a lot of death which I thought was kind of excessive, but at the same time believable since it was trained hunters against a bunch of scared kids--in their animal form or not, they still weren’t warriors. The only thing I would have liked to see was a greater emphasis on the circus itself because that was something I was pretty excited about.Flo isn’t my favorite character, but she does a lot of growing throughout the story which I admired. She starts off terrified of just performing her short act in front of complete strangers, but by the end she is completely willing to put her life on the line for all of her friends. This is stemmed from the fact that she feels responsible that everyone is running for their lives and wants to help make it as right as possible, but I don’t think everyone would step up to the plate that way. She refuses to run when offered the chance mutiple times and fights until the very end.I’m not sure if this will have a sequel or not (the ending seems to be open for one), but I will most likely pick it up because I am intrigued by this shifter world and how Flo and Jett’s story continues.

Okay storyline, but atmosphere and world building just not there By Cynthia Parten I received this ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review. You wouldn't think that a book about shape shifters would bore me, but that's exactly what happened. This book took me several days to finish, mainly because I felt no urge to go back to it. One thing that I disliked was the world building. I was imagining magical descriptions of the circus and the atmosphere and what it was like to shift. I didn't get any of that. The author gave some half-hearted descriptions of the circus, but it was mainly told from backstage where Flo was observing. And there was almost no description of shifting, nor were there any distinguishing qualities between the humans and their animal selves. When they humans did shift, it seemed like it was just another skin. There was no difference in their thoughts or actions and they were aware of everything around them. It was a bit boring. This book didn't pick up until the 40% mark. It is at that point in the book that the hunters find the shifters. The scene where Flo and some of the others fled the burning circus grounds was fast paced and kept me engaged. The characters were a bit underdeveloped. There was a romance between Flo and Jett, but it was more on the back burner. Good thing because they were boring together, despite the fact that she was a horse and he was a bear. Yeah, it takes more than shifting to make a couple exciting. In the beginning, there was almost no explanation given as to what happened to the parents of the shifters. The elders simply brought children to the circus when they were as young as two or three years old and gave no explanation. Later in the book, there were a few secrets and twists regarding their parents. Flo acted like she was shocked and traumatized by this information, despite the fact that she had never questioned the location of her parents up until that point. I did not buy her sudden outpouring of emotion. The last part of this book had plenty of action and a surprisingly high body count. There were also countless secondary characters that were introduced in the last half of the book that added absolutely nothing to the story. It's such a shame about this one because it had so much potential.

The book pits President of Russia, Ivan Ivanovitch, and his reckless grab for power, against the CIA’s best operative, Sam Mountain, whose mission is to prevent World War III. The melting of ice along Russia’s northern borders and a rapidly developing new Northern Sea Route from China to the West presents an opportunity to solidify the president’s power, secure Russia’s future energy needs, and make Russia the preeminent world power. Ivan Ivanovitch proposes the Plan and entices China and four other countries to join him. He knows that if things go wrong, it could mean World War III, but if he can rule Russia as Ivan the Great, the rewards are worth the risks. It is to China’s advantage to join him in the Plan as the Northern Sea Route will save millions in fuel costs in lieu of traversing the Horn of Africa and coupled with the South China Sea becoming a new Lake Beijing would lessen if not eliminate United States influence in the region. There are additional issues for both powers in the Pacific Rim concerning islands and lands not settled by treaty as to ownership after World War II and fueled by new discoveries of oil, gas, and other minerals. Impacting the Plan are two Romania orphans with a special bond and an agenda of their own who were brutally mistreated and abandoned to the streets of Budapest as children after the fall of the communist government in 1989. Lustin Ardelean, the Russian, becomes Ivan Ivanovitch’s personal assassin in eliminating all opposition to his presidency and is later to lead the Northern Army. Anton Lupu, the Wolf, uses the assassin money to buy oil product ships and build an empire by sale of stolen oil from Nigeria bunkered in Hong Kong. Natasha Ivanov as the Russian’s lover adds further twists and turns that produce a deep but easy and exciting book to read.

The author was writing as if he were sitting in on the meetings of the CIA. He seemed to be prescient of world events that are happening in real time. This is the main idea I got from this book. The author seemed to be expressing my own anxieties of world events unfolding at a breathtaking speed.I would give this book four stars..Georgia Jean

Rayvn rather reminds me of another of Saffron's major heroines, Nova. A gripping story retold, with a science fiction slant. Keep them coming!!!

I just think there should have been a little more background of this interesting world she lived. A lot of ideas were just hinted at, like what did that powder really do for the queen or what are the dividing lines between the different levels of undesirables and desiribles. Hopefully there will be another tale to answer some of these questions.
