Steve, Raised by Wolves, by Jared Chapman

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Fair-haired Steve appears to be a regular boy, but there's one thing that sets him apart—his parents are wolves. Mrs. Wolf sends her son (cub?) off on his first day of school with some good advice: to have a great day and "just be yourself." That advice backfires as Steve acts the way he normally does—growling, howling, and pouncing—much to the dismay of his fellow students and Mrs. Meadows. On the second day, his mother suggests that he be himself while also attempting to fit in a bit more, but he continues to alienate others with his behavior. It's only when the class pet disappears from its cage that one of Steve's talents earns him the admiration of his teacher and classmates. The humorous pen and ink drawings, colored digitally using bright, saturated shades, vary from spreads to smaller framed pictures. Children will get a kick out of Steve's antics, such as giving everyone fleas, drinking from the toilet, and eating questionable food for lunch. VERDICT A great storytime book, but be prepared for some howling.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

Review "Generates quite a few laughs.... Steve's wolflike behavior will have children giggling.... The story's message of the need to balance individuality with group expectations is neatly presented."―Kirkus Reviews"Children will get a kick out of Steve's antics, such as giving everyone fleas, drinking from the toilet, and eating questionable food for lunch. A great storytime book."―School Library Journal"A clever reversal story with an uplifting resolution."―Booklist"What happens when a boy who was raised by wolves goes to school? A lot of silliness, thanks to Jared Chapman's newest offering.... Young readers looking for a good laugh will enjoy this read."―School Library Connection

Definately an author I am going to watch with interest. Funny idea paired with his cool artwork=awesome book. My kids loved the playground scene where Steve marks his territory (as did I). This would be a great book to read in a new kindergarten class for sure. Keep up the excellent work Mr. Chapman.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Black Widow, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer. Nuff Said !!! By Stephen Vincent Kempton I suppose to be fair, I should have included Daredevil , Gerry Conway and San Francisco to the list of names in my review title of things that make this collection great. And make no mistake, this collection is great. This volume collects twelve issues of Daredevil from 1972 and 1973 . Daredevil #85 through #96. Printed on the finest slick heavy paper stock with beautiful art and color restoration. It features a rather rambling introduction by Gerry Conway which spends a little too much time talking about the movie Inherent Vice. Extras are very slim this time with a mere single page of original art.Gerry Conway debuted in the last Masterwork volume and his writing was not all that good. The Mr. Kline overall arc was an incoherent mess.Conway who was a mere 18 years old when he started in comics is now age 19 and has quickly become a pretty good writer. This is rapid vast improvement.Black Widow became the unbilled co-lead in the last volume and Conway puts the focus on her for most of this volume. Conway admits it in his introduction and you can feel his love of the character.Conway really shakes up the strip bringing Daredevil, Black Widow and Widow's chauffeur Ivan all to San Francisco. This all makes sense, but one after another all Daredevil's villains seem to follow him to San Francisco, which kind of tests believability. The pencils are all by the definitive DD artist Gene Colan with his photo realistic style. Tom Palmer inks the middle 10 issues . His style really adds depth to Colan's pencils. They make perfect partners. Golden Age great Syd Shores does the first issue and really is also a good match. Filipino artist Ernie Chua is poor fit when he inks the last issue in an adequate job.Daredevil #85 takes place on an airplane returning to New York and The Gladiator attacks. In DD #86 the Ox returns for their last New York adventure.Daredevil #87 brings the cast to San Francisco and introduces Conway's new long back story arc about Danny French and Project Four. It runs eight issues and is about a very early mission Natasha and a spy named Danny French go on in America. The mission goes terribly wrong. This is just hinted at in DD #87 which brings back Electro. We also meet new cast regular Commissioner "Ironguts" O'Hara. In Daredevil #88 Kilgore, The Purple Man returns. Then in DD # 89 Kilgore and Electro team up to battle Daredevil and The Black Widow.Daredevil #90 and #91 is also a two parter about Mr. Fear. Meanwhile Matt Murdoch gets an offer to join a new Law Firm in San Francisco. In Daredevil #92 the Project Four back story comes to front and we meet the man behind it all Damon Dran. In DD #92 hires a oriental mercenary named The Blue Talon to do away with our heroes. Then in Daredevil #93 and #94 Dran becomes The Indestructible Man. This closes up the Danny French saga.We close out the volume with the return of the Villain Man-Bull for DD #95 and #96.These stories have been a lot of fun to re-read and the Gene Colan art is beautiful. My Highest Recommendation.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Black Widow and Daredevil team up on the West Coast By Dan Pace (feral atom) Collects Daredevil 85-96 by Gerry Conway and Gene Colan. Only one extra, original art from #91 page 10, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer. This collection might be just below five stars in my opinion. It's close. This is some of Gene Colan's best art in the Marvel Age this side of Tomb of Dracula, especially when he's inked by Tom Palmer. Gerry Conway's writing took a big step up this issue. I liked the change of location to the Bay Area, but Horn Head goes with Hell's Kitchen like Thor goes with Asgard. I would've liked better rationale for Daredevil and his foes for choosing the Bay Area. The more these issues focus on Black Widow, the better. Between this volume and the last one, she really came into her own during this period. Colan illustrated her very nicely.Colan's rendition of the Bay Area is great, especially when he's rendering the fog with lights in it. Murky and spooky. I wish Conway had taken this hint to do more with the creepier bad guys, like the Man Bull and Mister Fear and do them a bit more monstrous. Don't get me wrong, Electro and Killgrave are fine villains, but the noir origins of the city combined with Widow and Colan's moody artwork could've made for some epic gritty tales.Daredevil and Black Widow also face the Gladiator (on an airplane) as well as the Indestructible Man and the Blue Talon (very forgettable in his only appearance). The last five issues collected here (92-96) rename the title to Daredevil and the Black Widow on the covers. Very apropos given how much "screentime" she gets.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Daredevil gets off life support By Jim Davis This is the ninth Daredevil Masterwork volume and I'm pleased to report that it is a substantial improvement over its immediate predecessors. It is not great by any means but it does show every sign of a writer and artist working hard to climb out of a deep hole. The issues included are Daredevil 85-96 originally published with cover dates from March 1972 to February 1973. Not the best of times for Marvel Comics or the industry in general. The tone is set in the first two issues. After teasing us that the tiresome Karen Page is yet again going to be the focus of the book in #85 she is shuffled off stage in #86. Daredevil disposes of two old foes, the Gladiator and the Ox along the way. Then a major shift for the book. Daredevil, the Black Widow, and Ivan relocate to San Francisco and the Black Widow becomes a permanent co-star even getting title billing on the cover before long (although I don't think the book's title officially changed). This was a standard tactic among comic book publishers in those dark days. If sales slipped and/or cancellation loomed put two struggling heroes in the same book and hope for the best. Sometimes it worked (Captain America and the Falcon, Power Man and Iron Fist, the present Daredevil and the Black Widow), sometimes not (The Atom and Hawkman, Super Villain Team-Up).The move to San Francisco is important not only for the new locale but for the new cast of supporting characters scripter Conway is building up. Commissioner O'hara, Lieutenant Paul Carson, and Jason Sloan all show promise. In the last two issues Lucretia Jones is introduced first as a white woman in #95 and then as a black woman in #96. I wonder if there was a change of plans between issues or maybe artist Colan just didn't get the memo. Danny French showed signs of settling in to the supporting cast but that was not the ultimate plan apparently.Unfortunately, the villains are mostly retreads like Electro, the Purple Man, Mr. Fear, Man-Bull, etc. Damon Dran, the heavy in the "Secret of Project Four" story arc, is the exception. His impact is diluted by Conway's need to make sure the reader knows exactly where Conway stands politically. One does have to credit Conway with facing head on the problem of Daredevil's secret identity being compromised by both Daredevil and alter ego Matt Murdock being closely associated with the Black Widow. All in all, very readable, especially when compared to previous volumes. There's another volume on the masterwork schedule and I find myself looking forward to it.

“A gripping saga of wartime survival.” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Based on a true story, this World War II novel by Scott O’Dell Award winner Graham Salisbury tells how Zenji, 17, is sent from Hawaii to the Philippines to spy on the Japanese.Zenji Watanabe was born in Hawaii. He’s an American, but the Japanese wouldn’t know it by the look of him. And that’s exactly what the US government is counting on.  Because he speaks both English and Japanese perfectly, the army recruits Zenji for a top-secret mission to spy on the Japanese. If they discover his true identity, he’ll be treated as a traitor and executed on the spot. As World War II boils over in the Pacific, Zenji is caught behind enemy lines. But even though his Japanese heritage is his death warrant, it’s also his key to outwitting the enemy and finding the strength to face the terrors of battle, the savagery of the jungle, and the unspeakable cruelty of war. The riveting Hunt for the Bamboo Rat is based on a true story and follows in the path of author Graham Salisbury’s other highly acclaimed Prisoners of the Empire titles, which began with the award-winning Under the Blood-Red Sun. "Salisbury has once again crafted a fine novel, based on an actual person, about first-generation Americans of Japanese descent and the clash of culture and national identity that World War II accentuated. . . .  The story will leave readers spellbound." —Kirkus Reviews, Starred"Fast-paced and compelling, this title will be enjoyed by voracious and reluctant readers." —SLJ"The history is fascinating, and Zenji is a fictional hero readers will long remember." —The Horn BookFrom the Hardcover edition.

Hunt for the Bamboo Rat, by Graham Salisbury

From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up—Zenji Watanabe is Nisei, an American with Japanese parents, living in Honolulu on the eve of World War II. As tensions are rising between his parents' homeland and his own, his old ROTC commander offers him secret work away from his home that will utilize his particular language skills. This title is a welcome new angle in historical fiction on the Japanese-American experience during the war, and it is based on a true story. Geared toward middle grade readers, Salisbury is careful not to linger on the more unpleasant and violent aspects of Zenji's time as a POW. Fast-paced and compelling, this title will be enjoyed by voracious and reluctant readers.—L. Lee Butler, Stoughton High School, MA

Review Kirkus Reviews starred review, September 2014: “Written in short, rapid-fire paragraphs that move the plot along at a brisk pace, the story will leave readers spellbound. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Action and adventure By Crystal Review Copy: purchasedHunt for the Bamboo Rat begins with conflict, action, and suspense. From the start, Zenji Watanabe lands in dangerous situations and uses his intelligence and sheer determination to work his way through. He faces adversity using what he has learned from his teacher priests. He thought of becoming a priest himself. He has compassion on others and many times he stands firm and peacefully faces his problems as he imagines the priests would – and there are many problems to address.Zenji runs into street thugs on more than one occasion, he spies on Japanese people, and is trapped behind enemy lines among other dangers. Salisbury keeps the action rolling in this suspenseful survival story. It is a page turner. The overall tone of the book is fairly serious, but there are a few moments of humor. Zenji’s mother writes Japanese poetry that her children translate into English. Zenji appreciates his mother’s creativity. This is a poem that was posted on the wall of the messy room that Zenji shared with his brother Henry.MessyRoom likeThis must meanMongoose came in houseThinking this placeIs garbageCan.As for the serious side of things, the “enemy,” members of the Japanese military, are generally seen in a negative light. Throughout the book though, readers can clearly see the complexity of humanity and the problem with judging someone by racial stereotypes. There are Japanese who behave honorably and those who behave otherwise. Zenji, being compassionate, tends to believe the best of others unless they give him good reason to change that opinion. One issue I had with the book was the form of English that was used on occasion. One example is a Taiwanese worker in the Philippines. “You no clean good, I whip you,” is one of the phrases he used. What surprised me though was when Zenji then thought or replied in the same manner. He said, “Spotless, I clean um good.” He is a Japanese American who speaks with standard English grammar at most other times. It didn’t really make sense for him to speak like that in those situations, but it happened multiple times. This isn’t a major problem, but it is something that can shake the reader out of the story.I had difficulty finding anything negative about Zenji. He is quite the hero. He has intelligence, courage, compassion, and strength.Recommendation: For those who enjoy war stories and adventure, this book would be a great choice and I would say get it soon. Otherwise, borrow it someday.Review originally posted at Rich in Color http://richincolor.com/2014/11/review-hunt-for-the-bamboo-rat/

He plays his part to a T, for when things get out of control he knows nothing, he has no rank in the military, he is not a soldier, he is a civilian hired by the military to translate Japanese. Being Japanese-American, Zenji can speak both Japanese and American so this is a perfect opportunity for him to help his family financially. It’s 1941 and being transported to the Philippines, Zenji’s life living amongst the military was easy in the beginning as war was just talk. It was entertaining to hear the stories that he heard at the Momo Hotel passing himself as a warehouse worker during the day, spending his spare time talking with the Japanese businessmen in the lobby. Not a political person himself, Zenji world now becomes broader as the men talk about issues he is not aware of. I love how his world expands as his knowledge of the world opens up and he makes acquaintances. His personality is a perfect fit for the job. As fear of war hangs in the air, people are leaving the island and Zenji has a seat but he gives that up. I cringed when I read this as I knew it would mean disaster but I knew from reading that this is the kind of person Zenji was. I don’t think I walked away from the book after this point. Days, weeks and months pass by, it seems like forever since he gave up that seat but I am only the person reading the details of his life after he made that decision and not the one living out the long days that he’s now living. It’s more than I expected, and when I read that it’s based on a true story, I was surprised. The Bamboo Rat, he was more than a spy, much more. I can’t wait to read more of the Prisoner’s of the Empire books.

Courage, honor, and loyalty in the adversities of World War II By Jane Murphy Romjue Hunt for the Bamboo Rat is the fourth book in Graham Salisbury’s Prisoners of the Empire series, which includes his popular Under the Blood-Red Sun (recently released as a movie), House of the Red Fish, and Eyes of the Emperor. Salisbury’s newest and impressively researched historical novel is a fast-paced, suspenseful page-turner suitable for readers in grades seven and above. Hunt for the Bamboo Rat focuses on seventeen-year old Zenji Watanabe, a young Nisei (American-born Japanese), during four critical years of World War II, August 1941 through August 1945. When the story opens, seventeen-year-old Zenji has just finished high school, where he excelled in languages, aspired to become a Buddhist priest, and participated in JROTC.Zenji lives in Hawaii with his mother, older brother, and younger sister. His father was killed in an accident several years earlier, and Zenji works at Honolulu Harbor to help support the family. Soon, Zenji’s JROTC leader, who recognizes both Zenji’s “gift of language” and his integrity, approaches him to set up a special interview with American military personnel. The result is Zenji’s recruitment to work under cover for the United States Army as a member of CIP, the Corps of Intelligence Police. Zenji’s mother is reluctant to let him join the army. Nevertheless, before he leaves home, his mother tells Zenji: “Your father and his brothers all served in the Japanese Army. You must be like them. Wherever you go and whatever you do, serve your country with courage and honor.” This is a tall order, but Zenji’s strong values, innate kindness, and unflagging loyalty help him meet the challenges ahead.Shortly after signing up with the United States Army, Zenji is sent to the Phillipines. Fluent in both Japanese and English, Zenji works to translate documents and other communications from Japanese to English or vice-versa. Eventually, he is even assigned to interrogate POWs for the CIP.After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Manila, Zenji sees firsthand the Japanese militaristic leaders who believe they are superior to all other races; he suffers when he is imprisoned but refuses to confess even when he is humiliated and enraged by his captors; and when given the chance to escape with General Mac Arthur’s company the “terrifying uncertainty” of the Japanese occupation, Zenji nobly relinquishes his place to a young American businessman he befriended and who has a wife and child. Ultimately, Zenji must live by his wits in the jungles of the Philippines after he flees his latest captor. Even when he is imprisoned, fed worm-infested food, and accused of treason, Zenji endures his physical and emotional suffering by mentally going home for comfort and strength. He thinks of his family and friends back in Hawaii to keep his spirits up and to see something good when he is surrounded by bad. Toward the end of the novel, Salisbury verbalizes a key theme of the novel in the following words spoken to Zenji by an American major: “In war you see the best and the worst in people.” As young as he is, Zenji certainly sees both during the war but, more important, he manages to maintain his positive frame of mind and loyalty to his country despite the adversity he encounters. As a teacher, I see Hunt for the Bamboo Rat as a rich source for discussions about values such as courage, loyalty, integrity, responsibility, kindness, and honor. In addition to writing essays on these values, students could certainly enjoy writing poems using the clever seven-line form Ma invented to write to and about her family members. I highly recommend this book for use as a classroom text or for action-packed leisure reading.

Winner of the 2012 Randolph Caldecott MedalThis New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Best Illustrated Book relates a story about love and loss as only Chris Rashcka can tell it. Any child who has ever had a beloved toy break will relate to Daisy's anguish when her favorite ball is destroyed by a bigger dog. In the tradition of his nearly wordless picture book Yo! Yes?, Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka explores in pictures the joy and sadness that having a special toy can bring. Raschka's signature swirling, impressionistic illustrations and his affectionate story will particularly appeal to young dog lovers and teachers and parents who have children dealing with the loss of something special.

I need to have some text in order to enjoy a picture book and to help kids enjoy it too. This book is an exception. Raschka is a brilliant picture book illustrator. He works magic with his squiggly bold lines and his thick strokes of the brush. The depth of emotion he can portray and his expressive charm and humor are on full display in this short little story.Daisy is a puppy who loves her ball. She loves playing with it and when one day her owner takes her to the park, the ball comes along. A playful romp with another dog turns disastrous when Daisy's ball pops and she is heartbroken. I say heartbroken because this dog is SAD. Raschka's illustrations are sure to touch the heart of any young child who has ever lost his favorite toy. This is all about Daisy, since we only see her owner's face at the very end. It's a feel good ending when Daisy goes back to the park only to meet up with the same dog and her owner. The good news is that they have brought a new ball to play with and Daisy gets to take it home. This book is sure to elicit lots of smiles and teaches a good lesson about being considerate with other peoples toys. Mainly though, it's just a fun little story to share with your child and a good pick for any toddler or preschoolers personal collection. Recommended.

Attention Caldecott Committee: By Isaac Police Okay, I need a place to vent.To all those on the Caldecott Selection Committee, you have GOT to GET OVER your OBSESSION with wordless picture books. Just because a book utilizes pictures alone to tell the story, that does not automatically make it worthy of the Medal. Seriously, it is getting out of hand. In the past 10 years, you have given it to wordless picture books 4 TIMES. It is starting to become a cheap gimmick, but you continue to suffer knee-jerk reactions to validate them.Don't get me wrong. Tuesday is brilliant. Flotsam is also very good. The Three Pigs first showed your googly lovestruck eyes for this genre, even when the book wasn't that great. The Lion and the Mouse, I could forgive that one since Jerry Pinkney was long overdue. But now, A Ball for Daisy, and Chris Raschka receives his SECOND Medal!!?!?! No, no, no, no.A Ball for Daisy does not deserve the Caldecott. I know that Raschka's style is unconventional, but I enjoyed Hello Goodbye Window, so it is not as if I am completely opposed to his art. The problem is that in A Ball for Daisy, the art is not clear enough to stand alone without words. Worse, the LAYOUT of the pictures does not provide a clear path for children to follow the story. The only way this story will make sense to a young child is for an adult to ADD words. I have read this book to third grade and kindergarten, and neither class was impressed or even engaged by this story. For all the rest of you that don't follow the history of the Caldecott, and are checking out this book because it won the Medal, I have a recommendation for you. If you really want the best picture book of the year with the most outstanding illustrations, I recommend Grandpa Green by Lane Smith. It is gorgeous and children are enthralled by it. It puts tears in my eyes. Somehow, the same committee that picked A Ball for Daisy for the Medal had enough good taste to also give Grandpa Green an Honor.

Certainly part of my enthusiasm for the text has to do with my own ball-loving pup, but the layers of emotion that the illustrator creates are incredible. The simple story - dog loses and ultimately reclaims a beloved toy - is altered into a deeper text about how profound loss can be, even if the loss seems small to those around you. The book is wordless, but truthfully, I think words would be superfluous to the book as a whole. I see this as a definite Caldecott option this year.

It takes the spooky fairy tale and turns it into a beautiful love story. Tabi's writing skill is impressive and you can't help but love the characters. This is the first time I have read this author's work, but it definitely will not be the last. Great story!!

Over the next three years, all the prisons in New Earth were emptied, and the inmates sent to the moon. Only 63% of the inmates survived the voyage. The decision to move New Earth's prison system to the moon was made for two reasons: first, it freed up critical space on the planet's surface for housing developments and industrial facilities; second, moving dangerous criminals to the moon would keep the population of New Earth safer. In 2139, The New World Order passed a law designed to deter criminals from ever committing a crime. Not only would the criminal be sent to the Moon Penitentiary, but their entire family - parents, and siblings, or spouse and children, depending on the age of the convicted person - would be sent along with them.Fugitive Dirk Haston has managed to rescue his wife and daughter from the lunar prison his family was forced into when their son, Garth, committed a crime on earth. Though he has mixed feelings toward his son, he's won't leave the moon without him.Stuck in the biodome without many resources, Dirk decides to reach out to a guard who has come through for him before. Unsure of her willingness, Dirk's family breaks into Hanri's house and take her hostage out of desperation.Though she faces the ruthless director's torture and her own jail sentence, Hanri agrees to help the Hastons in return for a favor. Unfortunately, she has already drawn suspicion and aiding the family won't be easy. It may be impossible, but it will be worth it if she gets what she wants in the end.The Hastons and Hanri devise a way to free Garth, and themselves, from the clutches of a merciless administration and the unforgiving boundaries of the moon. Once their plan is put in motion, complications hit them from every angle. Now the question isn't whether they will succeed, it is whether their freedom will cost one-¬or all-of their lives.Set in the not-too-distant future, full of sympathetic characters rife with tangible emotions, Fugitives is the third book in an original science fiction dystopian series entitled "The Moon Penitentiary" by author Nick Langenberg. The first three books are available now.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another 5 Star Beauty From David Litwack By Awesome Indies Reviews The Stuff of Stars is the second book in David Litwacks The Seekers series’, and it’s as unique, unpredictable and well-written as the first book. This story takes place after Orah and Nathanial arrive on the other side of the ocean. They’re seeking the descendants of the Keepers, those who left the Keep—a receptacle for advanced knowledge now forbidden. They find them, but they’re not as they expected. Their world is falling into disrepair, their advanced technology able to be used by only one aging man. The other adults are trapped in the dream—a mental state where they leave their bodies to become pure mind. Only children inhabit the city, and others have joined the Earth Mother and her Greenies—those who have eschewed technology and left the city to live off the land. Orah had hoped to find technology to take home that would help her people, instead she and Nathaniel find themselves teaching the Greenies the basic skills they grew up with: how to weave and die fabric, and how to sew and reap grain to make bread. They also become the first to attempt to talk to the dreamers since an earthquake upset their machines and trapped them in the dream. These are not light books; the mood is dark in this well-rendered and somewhat dour fantasy world, and yet I never once wanted to put the book down. The story kept me highly engaged and the prose was a delight to read. The overriding theme is the conflict between those who see technology as a god and those who see it as a demon. The author shows that the truth is in neither of the extremes. This book, though a sequel, could be read as a standalone or the previous book could be read afterwards, because the story stands well on its own and anything important from the previous book is mentioned where its needed.Another 5 star beauty from David Litwack.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Great Book By Jo-Von First, let me start by saying that if you come across a copy of this book, or are given it and you never read the first one, don’t be dismayed. Though this is the second in the series, it is written in a way that you don’t have to have read the first to fully enjoy it. Yes, to fully understand what a seeker, the keep and keep masters are you would have had to read the first book, but it is such a small part in this book that you won’t get lost. Now to the book. Once again Orah and Nathaniel go out to help their side of the world learn and grow passed the “darkness” that the leaders have drilled into their brains for 1000 years. Crossing the ocean, they find more and less than what they wanted. Wondrous machines that can mend bones, read brain waves and replicate food. But they also find that the people that built these wonders, wanted more and in the process lost all of the adults in the city. Since the machines depended on the brain waves of the people to run, the city was facing disaster. They didn’t know how to live without the machines, and they were failing one by one as the last adult grew older. If they want the knowledge that the city has to offer, they have to find a way to free the minds of the “dreamers,” the adults lost years ago.The book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and you never know where it is going to go or what is going to happen. I have and would recommend this series to anyone who has an open mind to dystopian books. I was lucky enough to receive this book for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Long In this second novel, Nathaniel and Orah travel across the sea in search of the descendents of the Keep, in hope that they will be able to assist their people in recovering from the times of darkness. This was a really great book, perhaps excelling even the first. There is a great mystery here about two types of people that Nathaniel and Orah discover... I don't want to give too much away but it was an excellent book about what it means to be human, what humanity can strive for, and ultimately the balance between technology and nature, dreams and reality. Orah and Nathaniel are tasked with determining the fate of 4 different societies, so the stakes are very high. It was a great page turner and a ton of fun to read. I don't have anything bad to say about this except perhaps Nathaniel could have featured a little bit more as Orah tended to overshadow him. This one is 5 stars for me and one of my new favorites.NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

  • Grimm's Fairy Tales was first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The first volume of the first edition was published in 1812, containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1815. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by German illustrator Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions – such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel (shown in original Grimm stories as Hänsel and Grethel) to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references—such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naïvely revealing to her stepmother her pregnancy and the prince's visits—but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825, the Brothers published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition", a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858.

There were so many positive reviews for the Calla Edition that I began feeling swayed but ultimately I went ahead with purchasing this edition because it is the complete works of Grimms Fairy Tales whereas the Calla Edition is not the complete works. I'm not aware of how many tales are in the Calla Edition but this one contains over 200 tales. For $16 I wasn't expecting it to be beautiful, I was mistaken. Between the thick leather cover, the owl gracing the inside cover, the gold pages and ribbon book mark, I was mesmerized. It is just so stunning and simple plus it will look marvelous on any book shelve.Very much recommended: beautiful and stunning.

Taylor Born in the late 1700s in Hanau, Germany, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were noted scholars celebrated for the documentation of German folklore--and most particularly for the documentation of folk tales that had been previously passed from generation to generation by oral tradition. The Brothers Grimm began to publish these tales 1812 under the title Children's and Household Tales, a collection which went a then unheard of six editions during their lifetimes and a posthumous edition shortly after their deaths. In its final form, the collection contained two hundred folk tales and ten "Children's Legends," and they would have a tremendous impact on both European and American popular culture. It is here that we find such figures as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretle, Tom Thumb, Rapunzel, and the Bremen Town Musicians--to name but a few. But be forewarned: these are not the tales as presented in such venues as The Little Golden Book series or on the big screen by Walt Disney. True enough, there is magic, wonder, and a world in which good triumphs... but there is also savage retribution, revenge, brutality, torture, and the occasional flourish of anti-semetism as well."Cinderella" offers a good example of the violence one often finds in these stories. Modern versions typically punish the wicked step-sisters with comic humiliation, but in the original tale their eyes are picked out by birds--and this is actually one of the less extreme retributions offered. The evil queen in the classic "Snow White" is forced to dance at Snow White's wedding... in red-hot iron shoes until she dies. Perhaps most disconcerting is the fate of the wicked servant in "The Goose Girl," who is thrown naked into a barrel driven through with spikes that is dragged by horses through the town!Although children typically adore such gruesome details, modern parents will likely be less enthusiastic--and I myself wouldn't recommend The Brothers Grimm as bedtime story material for the very young and impressionable. They are perhaps best left to older children, especially if their taste leans to the Gothic. That said, however, the Pantheon edition is quite good, for it offers both the original German texts and English translations; it would make an excellent gift for a young language student. And the stories themselves, so often dark and brooding, deserve to be read for the long shadow they have cast re literary tradition.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

A Treasure for Pleasure & Scholarly Readers Alike By A Customer Even if your not a scholar, this tremendous read-aloud reaches all the way back to the voices of the oral tradition, whose rich language and images will transport you to a magical state of being. The Frog King begins "In olden times when wishing still helped one, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun itself, which has seen so much, was astonished whenever it shone in her face." Try that at dusk or by candle light, and see if an awed hush doesn't fall over your listener(s)!For those with a more serious bent, this is perhaps the most accurate English translation of the Grimm's recordings of the oral tales. The complete collection lets you compare the patterns and rhythms of language and story line. The introduction by Padraic Colum and end commentary by Joseph Campbell (some 30 pages) are an added treasure. This version is frequently used by Waldorf teachers, and is "must have" for all primary teachers and families with children.

"Where Goodman's book shines is the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crew ... When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand." --School Library Journal

Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson takes readers into a land of impenetrable fog and crushing ice, a mysterious place where lie the dreams of kings, merchants and learned geographers--a passage to the Orient.

Sailing small wooden boats well above the Arctic Circle, guided by maps and charts that were based on rumor and hope as much as fact, and surrounded by crews that shared neither his belief nor his commitment, Henry Hudson searched again and again for what was not there. In 1611, his mutinous crew set him adrift on the freezing waters of the bay that would one day bear his name.

Beyond the Sea of Ice is the story of Henry Hudson's four harrowing voyages of discovery. Bringing the skills of an experienced novelist, Goodman creates an epic narrative of Henry Hudson's passionate quest. Fernando Rangel's paintings capture the icy beauty of the North Atlantic, the lushness of the new world and the cruelty and death that accompanied a doomed voyage of discovery.

Actual entries from the journals of each voyage bring the reader directly into life at sea in the 17th century, and Mikaya Press' exclusive gatefold Read-Along Map™ allows the reader to read about the explorer's travels while following them on a map at the same time.

Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson (Great Explorers), by Joan Goodman

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-The English explorer who searched in vain for a "speedy" route to China is brought to light. Readers will learn about Hudson the man, some details about each of his four voyages to North America, and what traveling by sea in the 17th century entailed. The prevailing cruelty inflicted on Native Americans may be upsetting to some readers, but Goodman has reported faithfully the encounters of the English with them. In an appended note, she explains that she used the word "Indian" to refer to the people of North America because that is the word the explorer used. Rangel's full-page, sometimes somber paintings are reminiscent of Marcia Sewall's work in the Pilgrims of Plimoth (Atheneum, 1986). Where Goodman's book shines is in the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crews. The endpapers, borders, and details such as the page numbers encapsulated in a rising sun symbol add to the book's visual appeal. When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand.Mollie Bynum, formerly at Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage, AK Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist This attractive volume from the Great Explorers Books series begins with an introduction that sets the stage for the Age of Exploration and Hudson's part in it. A foldout map indicating the routes of Hudson's four voyages of exploration extends beyond the pages, making it accessible to readers as they follow his story through the text. Each chapter focuses on one voyage, including its sponsors, purpose, difficulties (sometimes calamities), and its outcome. Full-page, bordered paintings provide dramatic visions of events, while small ink drawings and maps are also effective. An introduction to Hudson's voyages that will spark readers' interest. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Nicely illustrated. Good text, but more advanced than most illustrated books By HeatherHH The main thing that I want to make clear in this review is the target audience. This is a nicely illustrated account of Hudson's voyages, but the fact that it is illustrated may mislead some into thinking it is for younger children. The reading level of this book is middle school; a Flesch-Kincaid grade level based on four paragraphs rated it as a 7th grade reading level. It's a very well-written text, with rich, descriptive language, but it is for more advanced readers. In fact, it is in-depth enough for high school students, as long as they won't be offended by the illustrations. The illustrations make the text more engaging, especially for the visual learner. My 9-year-old reads on a high school level and enjoys non-fiction. He said that he would rate this book as 4 1/2 stars.Elementary children, especially upper elementary students, may be interested in this book as a read-aloud. I read it with my 7 1/2-year-old and 6-year-old in two parts, providing plenty of explanations as we went along. They were able to learn some from it, but it was definitely somewhat over their heads. I'm sure they will get much more from it in a few years, but we were studying the explorers now.The text begins with a few pages of background, explaining the reason for searching for an ocean part to the Far East, the demand for spices, etc. There's a nice map of all of Hudson's Voyages. It folds out, and if left unfolded, it sticks out to the side and is a handy reference as you read through each of Hudson's voyages. Most 2-page spreads have several paragraphs of text and 1 full page color illustration, though some spreads only have a partial page map.I would highly recommend this book for homeschooling families or parents of school children studying the explorers. For independent reading, it's best suited for middle school and high school age. For elementary students, it may be appropriate as a read-aloud.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. As Much A Story of Folly as Exploration By Marco Antonio Abarca Henry Hudson falls into the second rank of great explorers. We know his name today principally because his last name graces the Hudson River and Hudson's Bay. Yet unlike the first tier of great explorers, Henry Hudson never really experienced success. The Northwest passage to Asia was not discovered until the Twentieth Century. Indeed Hudson ended his last expedition abandoned by his crew along the desolate shores of Hudson's Bay. "Beyond the Bay" is as much a story of folly as it is a tale of exploration. The book is well written and gives the reader a good sense of just how large and unknown America was at the time of Hudson's expeditions. Also of note, the author does not sugar coat Hudson's story. He is presented warts and all to young readers. In the final analysis this is a good book about a second tier explorer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very High Quality By Lisa Munson Crews This is a well written, engaging and thorough account of Henry Hudson's travels. The art is a good as the writing. We used it to lay the groundwork for our study of the history of Dutch influence on American civics and the colonies in North America. It's definitely worth spending part of your homeschooling budget on this book.
