A good first book with fresh tech ideas and an interesting future landscape By Catherine Mackay Kodiak: Infinity Verge 1 is a fairly good book, but the writing is somewhat uneven with a tendency to sway too much to the melodramatic. The main character, Abel Cain is almost borderline unpleasant - while I like my characters to have flaws, too many leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth, so to speak. For me, Cain's temper tantrums and out-bursts just make me roll my eyes and think: 'there is nothing about this character I like.' Then to, the main female lead, Echo Shade (love the name) refers to Cain as 'boy' which is a bit rich since he is a good ten years or more older than her and makes her sound condescending. Then to, the story does somewhat suffer from uneven pacing which slows the story - the author keeps back tracking into the past and I have to say I sometimes lost the thread of the story in 'real time'. Morand also has a tendency to use words out of context, for example he uses the word 'hiraeth' which has no english equivalent; I had to go on the internet to find out if it was an actual word. Wikipedia cites the word as Welsh and generally thought as perhaps meaning homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed in relation to nostalgic feelings for the Wales of old. The author uses the word hiraeth to encapsulate Cain's feelings as he is trying to do CPR on Echo after retrieving her pod from space - not really anything to do with nostalgic feelings for the Wales of old? Ok, now that my gripes are out, overall the author has some fresh ideas around the technology of the future and it is an integral part of the back-drop of the story. The story's bones are good and over time I think the author will create exceptional stories. A big shout out to the author for pulling together a reasonably good first book - your courage to put your stories out there for the public to review and critique - kudos to you, man!
