Praise for Avanaux: A Hickory Lace Adventure (Book 1 in the Prosperine Trilogy)

“Mr. McDermott is a talented writer. From characters to plots, subplots and fantasy world building, he leaves the reader with a real sense of reality. This talent, coupled with his breadth of historical facts and science technology all come to play in building the universe in which heroine Hickory Lace (what a cool name) and the entire supporting cast must live, work—survive or die.” Lex Allen Books

“Original well thought out intriguing science fiction novel. I wanted to keep reading.”AJ

Not quite a stand-alone book - but there is some great stuff in it By Mike Robbins This book does not easily stand on its own; it’s part of a series, and unfortunately I only read this volume. As a result I found bits of the storyline confusing and felt I was supposed to be more familiar with the characters than I was. This is a pity, because there is some really nice stuff in this book, and if I’d read the first volume, I think I’d have enjoyed it tremendously.P.J. McDermott's Rise of the Erlachi concerns an intergalactic crimefighter, Hickory Lace. She’s also an empath – someone who can divine the thoughts of other beings and sometimes influence them by the power of her mind. She is off to another planet with two friends and a pair of stellar smugglers to try and recover a sacred and magical sword that has been stolen in one part of the planet, and is about to be used to overthrow the rightful king of a neighbouring kingdom. I ran into problems straight away; there was a lot about Hickory, her friends and the smugglers that I would clearly have understood had I read the first book in the series. The same applied to the smugglers, and the planet and its people. But despite that, I found a lot to like in this book. It’s well-written and well-paced, and the author has a clear, literate style that is easy and pleasant to read. The descriptions of the planet, its ecosystem and its inhabitants are great fun. My favourites were the Violators: “Half as tall as a human and black as soot... The beast’s muscles rippled as it negotiated the steep gradient and its head swung slowly from side to side, low to the ground. Yellow eyes on opposite sides of its head swiveled back and forth. It snuffled the trail through a single nostril located high on its snout.” Great. And the homicidal paramour plant is one I’ll definitely avoid in Central Park. Best of all is a huge demon bird; the way this is introduced to the story is really chilling. This stuff is worthy of C.S. Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet. It’s exactly what you read good fantasy for. However, the storyline concerning the rebellion and the sacred sword didn’t grab me the way it should have done. I think it might have done if I’d read the first book in the series. Also, to judge from the blurbs for the first volume, there’s an innovative and intriguing storyline underlying the series – perhaps concerning the Teacher, one of the characters. But it doesn’t come over in this book.I’ve wound up marking this at a modest three stars, but that reflects my experience trying to read the book as a standalone story. On its own, Rise of the Erlachi didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Even so, there’s some nice stuff in it. I’d certainly give McDermott’s work another try; and I suspect that anyone who had read the first volume, Avanaux, and its prequel, The Second Coming, would enjoy this a lot.The author kindly supplied an ebook for review purposes.

We are drawn into this world from the very first paragraph, with well-drawn and believable characters. The prologue sets the reader up for what is to come – this will be an adventure book where the characters must rescue a powerful and magic sword stolen from a warring faction. As the book progresses, there are overtones of other themes found in the science fiction genre that we have come to love (think Star Wars) – father issues, a supreme teacher/leader, a corrupt/inept king, the struggle for power and how to keep it.There is excitement from the beginning of this quest, with a spaceship that almost crashes going through a meteorite storm to land on the planet where the quest will take place. The descriptions of the harsh alien natural world and the many dangers encountered by our group of heroes follow in quick succession after the landing. The “teacher” character provides a baseline philosophy for the work that turns out to be essential to the action that will end the novella.I occasionally had difficulty following the political details that were described, mostly because the names of the characters and their races/political factions/worlds are unique to this series. But, I would recommend it for those interested in the action/science fiction genre.I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

A Nice, Quick Read for Science Fiction/Fantasy Fans By Page LaRue In this quick read, Commander Hickory Lace and her group arrive on the planet Prosperine in a space ship. Their mission this time is to retrieve the stolen, magical (or not, depending on which of them you ask) Sword of Connat. The stakes grow higher as the story progresses and they are drawn into a war. This is the second book of a trilogy and I didn’t read the first one. So perhaps that accounts for the trouble I had following what was happening at first. But after a bit, I got into the swing of it and enjoyed the semi-sentient flowers, wild colorful weather, fish that required tornadoes for mating purposes, and other world building oddities. I rooted for Hickory’s team in their hardships and battles.I was given a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
