Excerpt from Over the Border: Acadia, the Home of EvangelineHe said also of the unhappy people at that time, It hurts me to hear their weeping and wailing. So we conclude that the pleasant face did not belie the heart which it mirrored. It is a singular coincidence that, for being hostile to their country at the time of the Revolution, his own family were driven into exile twenty years after the deportation of the unhappy French people.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An adventurous rail exploration By Rick Mills Here is a charming little book which details the travels of a group of 8 people on an adventure by rail to Acadia (Nova Scotia, Canada), apparently in the late 1930's or early 1940's.The tale begins with a chronology of the history of Acadia, the expulsion of the Acadians during the French and Indian War (1755), and the return of the exiles - as told in the poem "Evangeline" by Maine native Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1847 - also available as a Kindle eBook). The trip is loosely planned by perusing rail schedules obtained by mail. The group departs from Bangor, Maine. It is not clear whether they took the steamboat across the Bay of Fundy or went the long way around by rail. They describe the Bay of Fundy and the Basin of Minas in detail, with their great tides and discuss their history. They stop in Port Royal, Annapolis, Digby, Halifax, Grand Pre, Clare and Mount Desert Island [Maine]. At each stop they explore with a favorite activity being reading epitaphs in cemeteries (many quoted), attempting conversation with the locals - especially children - in French, learning local history, and generally wandering around. The rail system gets more primitive as they get far into the countryside during their adventure, portions in a converted baggage car tacked onto a local freight train. The book conveys the quaint and quiet essence which is Acadia. Great preparation for a trip to the area. Occasional passages in French. 1203 locations.

It would probably be of interest to people no living in Northeastern America. It soon became boring for me - having never lived in that part ofthe woods
