An Interesting Tale By Awesome Indies Reviews Amy Spahn’s Preferred Dead is an interesting tale, a sort of tongue-in-cheek parody of interstellar exploration and alien invasion. The crew of the United Earth Law Enforcement (UELE) starship, Endurance, is exploring a hitherto unknown planet. On the surface, first officer, Lieutenant Viktor Ivanokoff reports ‘dead bodies that are drunk and disorderly.’ With this strange report, an even stranger chain of events is set off as the ship’s captain must make split second decisions with inspectors from headquarters, who are determined to remove Endurance from the roster of ships exploring interstellar space, breathe down his neck.Captain Thomas and his oddball crew find themselves facing off against a planet of undead—he doesn’t like calling them zombies—who are, in fact, a species that infected themselves with a toxin that killed all but their brain’s lower motor functions in order to escape death from a virus introduced into their atmosphere by the dreaded Haxozin Sovereignty—knights of the blood armor—who also happen to be at war with UELE.Despite the occasional data dump, explaining this or that technology, the book is funny throughout, until the rather chilling final chapter when the reader is finally given a firsthand look at the Haxozin. The author does a magnificent job with the interaction between and among the characters, achieving maximum comedic effect as their various eccentricities are played off against each other. The starship has the usual cast of characters, an insecure captain, a brooding hulk of a first officer devoid of emotion, an insecure security officer, a medic who got her training online, and an idiot-savant engineer who is forever tinkering with things. All of their skills somehow kludge together to solve the problem of the zombies on the planet Thassis—only initially. An enjoyable read but for a few wordsmithing issues that forced me on more than one occasion to stop and go back to make sure I understood what was happening and who was involved. The author mixes up character naming conventions to a point that readers are apt to get mixed up as well. For instance, Ivanokoff is ‘Ivanokoff’ at the beginning, and then suddenly he starts to alternate between being called Viktor and Ivanokoff in the same section of the narrative, which took me two read-throughs to sort out. A few of the other characters go through similar changes, and in the introduction of the ship’s captain, he’s listed by his first name, while everyone else is listed by last name—and, since his name’s Thomas, that, too, was confusing. The book also had a few wording oddities, such as ‘. . . it wrenched his attention behind himself. . .” which evokes an image of a near physical impossibility, if not improbability.Other than that the book was well-written and well-edited. It just squeezes into 4 stars.

As with the previous episodes, while there is action, humour and science none of that is more important than the characters. There are two point of view characters in this book, Thomas Withers and Viktor Ivanokoff. Thomas was the POV character in the first book and Viktor in the second. In revisiting these points of view the author is able to reveal more of their hopes and dreams, most especially for Viktor. This book opens a short time after the previous episode which ended with Areva’s decision to resign. Viktor desperately wants her to change her mind, but finds it just about impossible to tell Areva exactly how he feels. These moments of introspection deepen Viktor’s character, and show pathos as well as humour for his situation. The author uses the genre tropes well even down to the characters discussing their situation in this way. The book opens with Viktor, Areva and Chris Fish on a planet of zombies. Chris Fish, in his comically fearful fashion makes the point that Areva will likely die because she has resigned and doesn’t have much time left working on Endurance. Viktor obviously scoffs at this, but it becomes another of his worries.Things aren’t much easier for Thomas on board the Endurance as the ship and crew are being evaluated by two Oversight and Investigations ‘suits’.Up to now I haven't been a particular fan of zombie stories, but Amy Spahn has written a very different take on the usual zombie story, playing with it in her own humourous way. I won’t give away any spoilers, but the ending left me eager for the next episode.

By Tahlia Newland Amy Spahn has delivered another delightful installment of her Endurance series about the crew of a space ship sent to explore the far reaches of the universe because their bosses wanted to get them out of the way. The crew members are all there because they have failed in some way at other postings, and their captain’s aim is to prove that his team is not a bunch of no-hopers, but a useful part of the starship fleet. In Preferred Dead, the ship lands on a planet where the inhabitants are all zombies and the Endurance’s crew sets about the task of curing the populous of their affliction. Of course, all does not go according to plan, and though it looks very hopeful at one stage, a last moment twist delivers an unexpected outcome. Throughout the story two ‘suits’ hover around, evaluating the crew’s performance and adding another level of tension to the plot.Unlike Spahn’s previous books in this series, Preferred Dead really does need the background from the other books to be fully appreciated. This is because the themes of Victor’s relationship with the head of security and Thomas’s struggle with head command is an ongoing theme that has its roots in previous books. Preferred Dead is very much a mid-series book in that it relies on the previous books and sets up for a following book. I didn’t find the story as exciting as those in the earlier books and that is often the case with mid-series books. In summary, if you like light-weight space opera style series, then I recommend this one. The books are short, and I think best read in close succession.I received this book free of charge from the author for the purposes of an honest review.
