To keep the bank from repossessing her eighteen-wheeler and putting her and her daughter on the street, trucker Loretta Brennan takes a dangerous route to Wyoming with a winter storm approaching. She worries if she can make the deadline and navigate the icy roads since her driving partner husband died in an accident the year before. At a truck stop, Loretta meets handsome hitchhiker Sam Emerson, who helps her out of a bind. She feels compelled to return the favor and offers him a ride to Cheyenne. Blizzards, a series of trucker murders, and a sinister truck haunt them along their route. They grow close despite Loretta's fear that Sam may be aligned with the killer. Is Sam a good man down on his luck or is she falling in love with a murderer?

Review Note from Author: THIS IS THE NEWEST 2015 EDITION OF THIS BOOK. THIS VERSION IS THE ONE YOU WANT."Once I started reading this book I couldn't stop. This book offers romance, mystery and suspense. A great read and highly recommended." 4 Stars ROMANCING THE BOOK 5 Stars Literary Nymphs Reviews "The characters are very real, the mystery is strange but still believable, and the hazardous trip is very scary, especially since I've driven roads like that in blizzards and it is no fun. I liked Loretta and Sam, as well as the friendly policeman who enlists their help in crime solving." 5 Stars Manic Reader Reviews"A sweet and tragic story. The romance was sweet and tender and you will love both characters. The story has a good pace as well and will have you reading until you finish to find out what happens."  The Pen & Muse"I just couldn't put Winter's Journey down. The author did an amazing job creating such an atmospheric setting that I shiver now just remembering the cold and icy conditions faced by the characters. There were shivers of a different kind as people Loretta and Sam met along their journey started turning up dead. The constant "friend or foe?" vibe coming from Sam kept me on edge and helped me ride the roller coaster of emotions with Loretta as she tried to figure him out. The climax of the murder mystery was exciting and unpredictable. The romance between Loretta and Sam was slow building and let my imagination wander to all sorts of possibilities between them. If you are looking for an engaging story with twists and turns plus tender romance, I highly recommend Winter's Journey." 5 Stars  Literary Nymphs Reviews

From the Author BE SURE TO PURCHASE THE NEW 2015 EDITION OF THIS BOOK.It was February 1994 when I began two novels called Winter's Journey. At that time I still had my agent who'd sold four earlier novels for me to Zebra Books (Vampire Blood, 1991; The Last Vampire, 1992; Witches, 1993 and The Calling, 1994...after I'd sold my first three novels on my own to Leisure Books: Evil Stalks the Night, 1984: The Heart of the Rose, 1985; Blood Forge) but in 1994 I'd lost my admiring editor at Zebra and a new one had taken her place...but over the next year he didn't like anything I wrote for him. Later that year Zebra unceremoniously dropped me and my latest book (Predator, a story about a dinosaur in Crater Lake...which never came out) only six weeks away from going to the bookstore shelves. I'd begged the new editor not to call it Predator, bad title since there was a popular movie out by that name and the film had nothing to do with a dinosaur, and the cover was boring, an empty boat on a lake...what!!! Having that book, my first ever, dumped like that was a crushing experience, let me tell you. I had a stack of finished, printed covers and had already done my final edits. I got to keep my advance but the book was officially dead. The new editor-that-didn't-like-my-writing explained: "No one wants to read a book about a dinosaur." And six months later Jurassic Park came out!).To get my mind off the loss, my agent told me about a new romantic horror line that Silhouette was starting called the Shadows Line. They wanted to tap into the darker romantic paranormal market. They wanted the kind of dark atmospheric story I wrote but with more romance. It was Silhouette after all.  I'd been labeled as a horror writer from the get go, though all my novels blended genres; usually I wrote a romantic horror mixture with dashes of adventure, suspense and sometimes threw in a little history or mystery as well...but in those days the big publishers felt the need (and I think they still do) to squeeze a writer into one narrow slot. So I'd been branded a horror writer.Well, anyway, originally I'd called the first novel Shadow Road. Later, I retitled it Winter's Journey because I wanted it to more reflect the romance tales it'd become. For Winter's Journey's theme I choose to write about something that was making a mess of my once happy life at the time...out of stark necessity my husband had taken an awful over-the-road truck driving job and I ended up using some of his knowledge and experiences along the way as the basis for the book. His job took him away from me more than we'd ever been separated before and with so much lonely time on my hands I simply...wrote. Venting all my frustration out in my words. I even tried riding with him (I had a part time graphic artist job at the time where I only worked three days a week) a few times but the deadlines and the bad weather scared the bejesus out of me so that didn't last long. To make me feel better and get my mind off my unhappiness, I wrote two manuscripts for the Silhouette Shadows Line or tried to. They said my books still read like horror; not enough romance and didn't accept either one. Sheesh. After that my agent dropped me. Ah, the life of a writer. So, then life (as it has many times in my 44 year writing career), family and job problems, and my other novels (I was into murder mysteries for years and sold two to Avalon Books), got in the way and Winter's Journey went into drawer hibernation until, oh, about 2004, when I rediscovered it, dug it out, rewrote it and began trying to sell it again. Sometimes, I've found, a book left alone in a dark cubbyhole ages like good wine. (Or sometimes it just turns to vinegar.)Fast forward years to 2007 and a new e-book (e-books still being considered a risky new-fangled craze at that time.) publisher called The Wild Rose Press contracted both and eventually a third called The Ice Bridge, a ghostly romantic murder mystery set on Mackinac Island, and published them. Good publisher. They treated me well. But in 2015 when they were sold and I got all the rights back to the books (and soon after to my other 19 books)...I self-published it along with the others. So Winter's Journey has had a very long journey. The new cover for Winter's Journey is by Dawne Dominique and, I think, is hauntingly beautiful. I hope people like it and the book.

A tense, thrilling story, and one that will keep you guessing. Having recently driven the route taken by Loretta--also in winter and also by myself--I was particularly empathetic to her fears and concerns of driving a rig through that stretch of highway during a snowstorm. I also saw several eighteen-wheelers off the road during my trip, which included a blizzard, though nothing like the one Loretta and Sam face, but scary enough for a lone woman in a car. This story is reminiscent of the old made-for-TV movie Duel, starring Dennis Weaver, and I kept thinking what a taut thriller for the big screen it would make. Reading it in the wintertime with snow on the ground won't hurt a bit.

Loretta is a very strong woman, she is definitely a great character. I loved seeing her journey and her strength throughout the story.Truthfully, she has several "too stupid to live" moments. It mystified me that at every opportunity to share information with the authorities she balked. If there is a series killer out there and suddenly something strange is happening at home, you better believe I would mention it to the cops. There is no such thing as coincidence!I really liked the interactions with Sam and the progress of their relationship. The feelings come rather quickly, you can see the threads of connection and attraction developing. It is often muddled with events that make it hard to trust the feelings.I was a touch annoyed of how every time you start to trust Sam things occur to make him suspicious again. The mixed narrative helps you know what the real deal is with him. Most of the book is from Loretta's POV, but the glimpses into Sam help to move things along. I always prefer to know what everybody is thinking and feeling. The story feels more like a standard fiction than a romance. Not a lot of frills here, but it has a genuine atmosphere. This is the first book I have read with a lady trucker, it was a refreshing turn. I was fascinated with the whole culture of truckers. I never realized that it was such a small world on the road.I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kimberly Henrie, who has a very smooth read. She really has a great connection with the book and the characters feel real. She has a fabulous pace that makes the story move, even in the slower moments. Great texture in her voice and distinct characters. I will definitely look at more of her work!Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It is a slower read that takes it's time unraveling. I loved discovering this new world.Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All ratings, opinions and thoughts are my own.

I never knew what was around the corner and needed to keep flipping those pages so that I could find out.Loretta Brennan lost her husband Jed two years ago to a trucking accident. Widowed and trying to survive with a mortgage, a balloon truck payment due shortly and an eleven year old, Loretta decides to take a job with a big named trucking company. This could be her break and give her the money needed to make the payments. But the route she is to take is the same one her husband was killed on two years ago. There is a winter storm approaching and the deadline is almost impossible. She is to transport oranges from Oklahoma to Wyoming. Because she needs the money she agrees to do the run even with the dangers of the impeding storm chasing her. From the onset she faces mechanical problems, harassed by another driver, stranger steps in coming to her rescue. Loretta meets Sam Emerson who is hitchhiking his way to Wyoming. She needs the help, he can drive a truck and he needs a ride. So she agrees to get him to Wyoming in return he will help drive giving her the chance to get the shipment there on time. When truck drivers are murdered along the same route she is taking, she starts suspecting Sam. By this time he has stolen her heart and she wonders if he is the serial killer and he made her fall for him?As they continue on their route we find that this sweet tender romance, between Loretta and Sam continues, but not without doubt and problems.Ms. Griffith shows us the dangerous side to truck driving while building a romance between to souls that so desperately need each other to help them find their way.Not wanting to spoil the storyline for you as it is a compelling page turner, Ms. Griffith takes your imagination on a journey right to the end.I enjoyed the strong women making it on her own, but how the tenderness of the romance told her that she can be strong but she has needs also. This book offers romance, mystery and suspense. A great read and highly recommended.Review by RobinBook provided by Author for a reviewReview Originally Posted @ Romancing the Book.
