Suddenly Samantha and Eric find themselves caught up in a chain of events that will force them to face the truth: Earth is but a new battle ground in an old war. A war that humanity is losing. Familiar friends and new allies. Alien technology at the bleeding edge of science and soldiers of legend. It may take more than that to survive an enemy older than mankind itself. Then again…it may not.

By Ben Echoes of the Fallen is an exciting and surprisingly strong first novel. Mr. Horvath shows himself to be a dazzling new talent as he deftly creates a blistering page-turner with multiple strong, sympathetic out point-of-view characters, a bright and engaging emotional core, and brilliant, engaging, and high-stakes action sequences. That, in itself would be good enough for many, but the fact that he does all of this while slowly unveiling a fully fleshed-out and complex yet coherent and relatable mythology makes it all the more impressive.Echoes of the Fallen grabbed me from the first chapter and wouldn't let go (despite it's impressive length, I powered through it in just a couple of days). It's one of those rare novels that is able to create a fictional world that is so real and so engaging and characters that are so believable and so likable that I was sad to leave it behind when it ended and had to take a few days before picking something else up because I was still haunted by the world Mr. Horvath created.I can't recommend this book highly enough and promise that if you like sci-fi or fantasy, you'll love this book. I've told friends that if a William Gibson (who is obviously brilliant, but whose writing I find kind of dry at times) story was written by George R.R. Martin, it would probably be a lot like Echoes of the Fallen. I can't wait for a sequel.

This is modern day sci-fi at its best. The writing is very well done and the characters are so real that you start wondering what each character will do next. From the first page, the action and characters jump out of the book into your head. The battle scenes are hard core and very real. The science aspects of the plot are very well explained and never get in the way of a great story. I’ve read many sci-fi books over the years and this book ranks near the top of the “I can’t put it down” group.

So when I say that I have never read this story before, I speak with the weight of that experience. Tony Horvath isn’t content with a far-flung universe. He develops a porous multiverse that pulls both foes and unexpected allies together. Sure, a lot of familiar tropes are there—we’d miss them if they weren’t. Readers will recognize Eric and Samantha’s trajectories. But even where Horvath cites his predecessors in the genre, he develops the material in new ways—including one of the most interesting systems of “magic” (telekinetic power) I’ve encountered. The beginning grabs the reader and doesn’t let go for hundreds of pages. You start this book at bedtime at your own peril! (May others learn from my mistakes…) The action scenes are intense, and the dialogue peppered with great one-liners. (My personal favorite: “I think you’re full of it, Kent, but I’ll still accept the compliment because my ovaries have decreed that I must.”)This is a truly excellent first novel. That said, it is a first book and falls prey to a common problem in the genre, a slower paced middle, but the ending proves more than worth the wait. So give it a try. You won’t regret it.
