It is impossible to describe this book without giving away the plot. Nor is it possible to describe the content, for that might seriously interfere with your enjoyment of the roller-coaster ride upon which you are about to embark. No, a somewhat oblique approach is needed to give you, the reader, some flavour of this narrative. "All power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" (Lord Acton 1834-1902). History is a frequent witness to this simple truth. But what if someone is corrupted even before they have acquired power? If they were born with their brain wired up differently, completely bypassing available connections to the repositories of basic human traits such as understanding and empathy, pity and mercy, guilt and remorse, kindness and generosity? Do we have a name for such a creature? Yes, we do. A psychopath. Someone who will never hesitate for even a moment in their pursuit of power, self gratification and self aggrandisement. Someone who is utterly ruthless and cold-blooded in every way. And there are many in society. You probably passed a half-dozen on your way to work today. They are reported to particularly thrive in corporate environments and the legal profession. Determined and single-minded, their vaulting ambition invites fear and awe. But this is not as alarming as it may first appear. Because by and large society and its conventions manage to keep psychopaths at least somewhat under control. And then again, there are degrees to which someone may be psychopathic. Indeed, many regard some degree of psychopathy as desirable, for it provides a spur to significant achievement of any kind. However, what if a psychopath at the worst extreme end of the spectrum had virtually nothing to fear, and hardly any consideration to keep him under control? If he had power of life and death over any of those whom he drove past in his armour-plated car? So, in this book, are we then talking about Saddam Hussein in terms of what happened in Iraq? Are we really? The answer to this question may surprise you. So prepare yourself to be surprised……be very surprised.

Gripping, exciting, and action packed By Tracam This is my second John Smith book and I described the first, An Unlawful Act in Libya as easily the best 103 pages I have ever read.A Murderous Act in Iraq follows in the same vein and I smiled when Amazon asked me to choose the pace and gave me three options: Slow, Steady and Fast. I ticked "fast" but it wasn't true....frenetic would be closer to the truth. The author spends a little time developing the main character at the start of the novella and then it's full on action. I defy any reader to ever describe John Smith's writing as boring. Reading his books is like being on a roller coaster without the safety harness.Brilliant and captivating.

HOOD The thing I best like about this author is that he keeps me enough "off kilter" that I truly pay attention to his writing so I don't miss anything. He did the same in this latest book. I started this in an evening and just had to keep reading until my eyes could no longer stay open.Just as his previous book in this series " Unlawful in Libya" the book cover draws the reader into thinking the tale will be about one thing and it turns out not to be true. I really tried to out think John in this book but I failed.Since this is a book less than 150 pages, I will not give you a book report that might contain spoilers. Instead I will encourage you to take a leap of faith that I would not steer you wrong, and read a really good book. Then if I am correct, you might want to try other of John M W Smith's books to assure yourself that this is not a fluke.

By Amazon Customer Once I began reading this book I couldn't put it down and read it all through the night, then I picked it up and finished it the next day. I had already read the first book, ‘An Unlawful Act In Libya’, the first book in The Dictatorship Thriller Series by John M W Smith, and I also couldn't put that one down until I finished it. In this story, ‘A Murderous Act In Iraq’, the story begins with John sitting in a bar in Penzance while waiting for his lady friend to turn up for a planned naughty weekend. However, when she sends him a message to say she has to work back and won’t be arriving for hours, John loses his appetite because he was looking forward to having dinner with her. Disappointed, he ponders on whether to have a stiff drink, but changes his mind as he doesn't want to be drunk and grumpy and end up missing out on what could turn out to be a romantic night. Then as he orders a lime and soda, an elderly man in a wheelchair notices the miserable look on his face and asks him if he'd like to join him for a chat. With nothing else better to do to while away the hours while waiting for his rendezvous, John sits down with the old man who introduces himself as Harry Ramshaw.Harry says that worrying about trivial things like being stood up are pointless when much worse things in life can happen, then he begins telling John the horror story of how he nearly lost his life twenty-eight years earlier. Harry Ramshaw explains how he was a junior minister in The Foreign Office and how he had access to information about important people in most countries and that he knew the degree of power they had, and their vices. He explains how when his party was defeated in the elections, and therefore lost his job, he then set himself up as an agent for the supply of high-end performance and luxury cars to the rulers of oil-rich countries in the Middle East, the dictators, and their cronies. He explains how he had a good reputation as a middleman between customers and manufacturers, but then one day he had made the big mistake of doing business with two Middle Eastern men for his services to have a custom made car for a well-known monster and cruel psychopath who happens to have a lot of power. Though Harry tries to get out of his greedy dilemma, what happens next will have you sitting on the edge of your seat as the story takes you on a ride of intrigue and horror right to the very end. I have read many books by John M W Smith and they are all different, but extremely well written. The author writes from the heart and obviously from his own experiences, and at the moment he is my favourite author. I have already begun reading another one of his books and I look forward to reading the next one in this series. I highly recommend this book and I certainly learnt things I never knew.An Unlawful Act In Libya (Based on a true story)
