In Egypt's Thousand Days of Revolution, author Alexander Murray provides a vivid and fascinating eyewitness account of Egyptian life in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. A Scotsman and confirmed Egyptophile, Murray first arrived in Cairo just weeks before the assassination of President Anwar Sadat and has returned to the country for many extended visits since the fall of Hosni Mubarak. In his remarkable book - part travel guide, part personal memoir, part sociopolitical commentary - the author vividly recalls and illustrates with his own full-colour photographs his time spent in a nation in the throes of upheaval and political uncertainty, painting an unforgettable portrait of daily life in the troubled Middle Eastern giant during what could well be the most momentous epoch in its modern history.

Tovar After finishing the carefully-edited Kindle version, (the maps of Egypt and Cairo at the beginning are very much appreciated), I feel that I’ve just returned from a few weeks in Egypt with the author, who  transmitted to me his unconditional love for the land and  people. Alexander Murray returned to the land of the Pharaohs after a 30 year absence, and uses a travel journal to  narrate the political and social changes that took place between the summers of 2011 and 2014. He describes both his own impressions and those of the people around him with whom he interacts.Murray begins each day of the journal with a snapshot he takes himself. However, the purpose is not merely illustrative. Each image contributes to the story he tells. The book definitely helped me become more aware of the significant changes taking place in the country and how the people are living through them. At the end, Murray leaves it to the reader to draw his own conclusion. The author's style is both entertaining and readable, yet intellectually stimulating and very personal. His colorful descriptions led me through the bustling  streets and squares of Cairo in a way that I could almost feel the smells and tastes, listen to the sounds and be fascinated by its magic and mystery ... In short, a stimulus for the mind and for the senses.

Informative, thought provoking and a pleasure to read By JS Turnbull Having read this journal of events from Murray’s personal experiences within Egypt, I felt that I had actually been there with him! The author adds such detail to his journals, using a fascinating combination of actors, events and places. One can almost smell the atmosphere and feel the intense Cairo heat.To my delight there was little overlap in the journal - every day was indeed very different –each with its own new angle. I also enjoyed Murray's continuous attention to the passing of time – posing the question of whether events have or will lead to a better Egypt. The use of wonderful photographs and the occasional 'flashbacks' to the early 80's adds to the sense of nostalgia and the reality of how long it takes for a country to change. All in all a wonderful book. Informative, thought provoking and a pleasure to read.

A fascinating and engaging look at a challenging subject By NW Connections The first-person viewpoint of this fascinating book brings home, as nothing else can, the intricacies and challenges of Egyptian politics and the lives of everyday people. I found the format immensely helpful -- not long chapters, but more like a diary, with each day's entry including a photo or two, as well as first-person narrative. And oh, what photos! There are cityscapes and vistas, but more importantly, there are evocative photos of Egyptian people of all ages and conditions, many of whom author Alexander Murray has interactions with in his daily life in Cairo. His photos have verve, immediacy, and insight, and it's worth purchasing the book for them alone -- although I don't think you'll be able to resist the text. Murray writes from both head and heart, and I found myself saying "I'll just read one more entry" late at night and being unable to put the book down. I look forward to a second -- and third -- read of this remarkable book, which is rare for me. Highly recommended!
