Every December, The Nutcracker comes to life in theaters all across the United States. But how did this 19th-century Russian ballet become such a big part of the holidays in 21st-century America? Meet William, Harold, and Lew Christensen, three small-town Utah boys who caught the ballet bug in the early 1900s. They performed on vaudeville and took part in the New York City dance scene. Russian immigrants shared the story of The Nutcracker with them, and during World War II, they staged their own Christmastime production in San Francisco. It was America's first full-length version and the beginning of a delightful holiday tradition.

The Nutcracker Comes to America: How Three Ballet-loving Brothers Created a Holiday Tradition (Millbrook Picture Books), by Chris Barton

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—This well-researched history tells how three brothers from a small town in Utah came together to present the first full-length version of The Nutcracker in America. That performance on Christmas Eve, 1944, at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco started a holiday tradition that continues to this day in cities across the United States. Gendron's colorful illustrations capture the historical setting and the action and drama onstage and off. Back matter includes a time line with black-and-white photos, a summary of the story line, and suggestions for further reading. VERDICTA terrific choice for fans of The Nutcracker and all things ballet.—Virginia Walter UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies

By Janet Hamilton Summary: Although the Nutcracker ballet seems like a timeless holiday tradition, it’s only been around since the second half of the twentieth century. Three brothers from Utah, Willam, Harold, and Lew Christensen were responsible for bringing the Russian ballet to the U.S. The Christensens came from a dancing family and grew up to become dancers, vaudevillians, and eventually, teachers and producers. During World War II, money and dancers were both in short supply. The brothers were working in San Francisco and needed a hit to keep ballet alive in that city. When Willam heard someone whistling Tschaikovsky on a city street, he was reminded of a production of the Nutcracker he had been involved with years before. The brothers’ low-budget production premiered on Christmas Eve and was a huge hit. Over the next several years, the show spread to other cities across the country, so that by the 1960’s, the Nutcracker tradition had taken hold. Back matter includes notes from the author and illustrator about their research, a timeline, a summary of the story of the Nutrcracker, and suggestions for further reading. Grades 2-5.Pros: I was surprised to learn how recently the Nutcracker came to America. The history was interesting, and the illustrations, inspired by Edgar Degas, capture the grace and beauty of ballet. The conversational tone of the text keeps the story moving along.Cons: Some of the details of the brothers’ lives seemed extraneous to the main story. A little editing would have made this a better read-aloud for younger readers.

By Amaran Does any American child forget the wonder and magic of seeing The Nutcracker for the first time? I was five, and my older sister had taken me to the local university to see a live production. The music! The pageantry! The costumes! The lights! I was completely enthralled! I was in love! This was back in the day of phonographs, and as a follow-up Christmas present, my sister gave me the album and an accompanying book. Here I sit, decades late, and I can see every page of that book and hear every pop and skip of the album. And I've now had the joy of introducing my own two daughters to the Nutcracker and to ballet itself. Because of this love, I was eager to read The Nutcracker Comes to America. I enjoyed learning how these three brothers brought The Nutcracker to America. I've always been interested in vaudeville. The illustrations of the book were sweet and enchanting. I can't wait for my girls to unwrap this book for Christmas this year!

It's very informative while staying on a level that even young children can understand. I believe it would be particularly enjoyed with a viewing of The Nutcracker, but even without that, this is the type of book that can become a Christmas tradition to read for both children and adults alike. This review is unbiased and based upon a copy won through the Goodreads First Reads program.

The characters lives involve them in more than the romance as real life does. What I really liked is that the villain did not take over the story as they do in so many of the books I've read over the past few months.

  • An Ideal Husband is an 1895 comedic stage play by Oscar Wilde which revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on the themes of public and private honour. The action is set in London, in "the present", and takes place over the course of twenty-four hours. "Sooner or later," Wilde notes, "we shall all have to pay for what we do." But he adds that, "No one should be entirely judged by their past." Together with The Importance of Being Earnest, it is often considered Wilde's dramatic masterpiece. After Earnest, it is his most popularly produced play.

From Publishers Weekly Chapman, author of the bestselling The Five Love Languages, teams up with psychologist Thomas for thoughtful dissection of another tricky subject. Chapman and Thomas choose to tackle the apology because, as with love, understanding it is essential for developing, maintaining and repairing relationships. Apology, however, covers a much broader scope, applying to all varieties of relationships, from the deeply personal connection between intimate partners to the formal relationships between nations. Chapman and Thomas's basic observation that we don't all agree on what constitutes a sincere apology is perhaps not surprising, but it may, as they show, help couples who can't resolve arguments because their apologies aren't accepted. The authors stress that you need to learn the "language" of the person you are apologizing to: for one person, it may be expressing regret, while for another it's accepting responsibility or making restitution. Especially useful is the chapter that helps readers learn which language of apology feels most sincere to them. Chapman and Thomas are most apt when they seek to repair relationships not with large ideas but with simple basics that are too often taken for granted. (Sept.) From the Inside Flap When our granddaughter Davy Grace was five years old, her mother and father allowed her to spend a special week with her grandparents. Karolyn and I were elated. The week was great fun. But one experience is indelibly printed in my memory. Karolyn has a special drawer where she keeps “stickers” for the grandchildren. Davy Grace, of course, knew about this special drawer and asked her grandmother if she could have some stickers. Karolyn told her that she could have three; any three she chose. An hour or two later, we began to see stickers all over the house. Davy Grace had taken the entire sheet of stickers and placed them randomly. Karolyn said to her, “I thought I told you to take only three stickers, but you have taken the whole sheet.”Davy Grace stood in silence as her grandmother continued. “You disobeyed Grandmother.”Tears cascaded down Davy Grace’s face as she said, “I need somebody to forgive me.”I shall never forget those words nor the pain which I saw in her young face. My tears joined her tears as I embraced her and said, “Honey, all of us need somebody to forgive us.” —From The Five Languages of Apology

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a quick read like a splash of cold water By Varsha It was a quick read like a splash of cold water on the face!! May be because the title `An ideal husband' is an irony in itself compared to the kind of story Oscar Wilde has portrayed here in this book, because the truth he unfolds throughout and the insight that he gives in this play clearly challenges the existence of a `ideal husband' or rather an `ideal person'.Lady Chiltern thinks highly of her husband Sir Robert Chiltern. But as soon as she gets to know that the money and the status that he has earned was by being dishonest once in his past when he was young.. at that moment her idea of he being an `ideal gentleman' is shattered. Because her theory is"If people are dishonest once, they will be dishonest a second time."Yes may be... but not all ways. I almost agreed with her when she said that but Sir Robert Chiltern words made me consider his perspective as well when he quoted the below lines.."The error all women commit. Why can't you women love us, faults and all? Why do you place us on monstrous pedestals? We have all feet of clay, women as well as men; but when we men love women, we love them knowing their weaknesses, their follies, their imperfections, love them all the more, it may be, for that reason. It is not the perfect, but the imperfect, who have need of love. It is when we are wounded by our own hands, or by the hands of others, that love should come to cure us - else what use is love at all? All sins, except a sin against itself, Love should forgive. All lives, save loveless lives, true Love should pardon. A man's love is like that.It is wider, larger, more human than a woman's. Women think that they are making ideals of men. What they are making of us are false idols merely. You made your false idol of me, and I had not the courage to come down, show you my wounds, tell you my weaknesses. I was afraid that I might lose your love, as I have lost it now."This was indeed a splash of cold water that hit Lady Chiltern before it was too late and of course some of Lord Goring's (one of the smartest character in the play) friendly advice that she considered in a right way! Thus, Oscar Wilde does succeed in showing `imperfection' as a rectifiable flaw not a dreadful disease!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wilde, as always made me laugh. By Gina Hott 'An Ideal Husband' while funny wasn't quite as easy as many of his other books. You had to pay attention and follow the by-play in order to get it. There were always quite a few characters introduced right away and it was a bit difficult to keep them straight as I read.

I worked at a club on the strip during the 80's, and spent a fair amount of time at many of the local haunts mentioned. Reading the book, brought back a lot of memories. It's a page turning mystery, that introduces us to the world of exploitive label executives, music makers and a cast of interesting characters. I'm giving the other copies to my brother, a musician who played many of the clubs mentioned, and a friend who loves noir novels. I also just discovered that the soundtrack to the novel is available on Spotify. How cool is that! I'm looking forward to the next one. Once Upon a Time in LA

This book is everything that I want in a novel, it has sex, drugs, rock and roll, and By Paul Stewart This book is everything that I want in a novel, it has sex, drugs, rock and roll, and mystery, depth, wit, intrigue, and the most vivid descriptions that put me deep in the story unable to put it down until I finished it. Any fans of great mystery, noir, rock and roll, hollywood. suspense, thrillers will love this book! The joy derived from imagining LA during the flashback era's was Ecstasy for a lover of Los Angeles and the great literature that has been an ode to it. This book adds to the legacy of great written works that have been based in the city of Angels with a fresh yet so classic feel. This book gripped me, I can't recommend it enough!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mystery, Mayhem, Music. By Bruce Duff I really enjoyed this book. I'm a lazy reader in general, but this one hooked me and I spent my spare end-of-nights in succession reading until I finished it. The story is great, based enough on reality to be believable but with enough imagination to take it to some cool, weird places. The characters were well developed--anyone who has been in the music biz will be able to draw a number of parallels, anyone who hasn't will get a good vibe on what its denizens are like. The locations described make you feel very much that you are there in the midst of the action. The casting of the film version should be interesting!

In 1968, with Franco still in power, 21-year-old Ana M. Briongos left her native city of Barcelona for the first time and went to Afghanistan. Staying first in Kandahar, then in Kabul, it was not long before she fell in love with this fascinating country. Between 1968 and 1977, she would return there many times. In her quest for self-discovery, she encountered a cast of characters worthy of a novel, from street vendors in the bazaar to members of the country's ruling class and relatives of the Afghan royal family. Ana M. Briongos was also very privileged to be given a rare and intriguing glimpse behind the veil into the hidden world of Afghan women. "Winter in Kandahar" offers a personal recollection of an Afghanistan that no longer exists: that of the final years of a forty-year-old monarchy on the verge of collapse. The book provides an insight into Afghanistan's complex system of clans and tribes, as well as a compelling account of the country's troubled history. The friendships Ana Briongos cemented during those years are still very much alive; this book represents a tribute to the survival of friendship through adversity against a backdrop of adventure and intrigue.

It was extremely interesting to read about the experiences of a young Spanish woman traveling by herself in Afghanistan during the 1960s. The book struck a perfect balance between narrating the author's personal experiences in Afghanistan and providing the reader with information about the country. The book effectively describes Afghan history, geography, tribal structure, political organization, and culture without being too academic. In this way, the book is very accessible for anyone interested in this part of the world. In short, A Winter in Kandahar provides an informative and entertaining look at Afghanistan from the perspective of a woman that quite literally takes the road less traveled and seeks out the unconventional. A foreign woman, alone, forty years ago in Afghanistan.

A European woman in Afghanistan By jm Whether or not you have read "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns", you should not miss this fascinating book in which the turbulence of Afghanistan between 1969-1977 is brought to us through the eyes of a young European woman. "Winter in Kandahar" is rich in personal experience, historical fact and humanity.

By Aaron Farmer The story of Drake and Delilah was a quick and fun read! I don't have a lot of free time, but I found myself wanting to keep turning the page to see what would happen next. The story was also engaging to me, because of its obvious influence from Lord of the Rings, the Narnia series, and even biblical narratives.Yet, McClane never outright borrows from these sources. Instead, he takes the best elements of these influences and crafts a masterful saga about a unique realm. I have already recommended this to several of my friends, and I hope you will enjoy too!

By Jacob S A story of good vs evil in a fantasy realm with clear Christian themes. Contains dragons, centaurs, gnomes, philosophizing, people sticking each other with swords, and people refraining from sticking each other with swords as is appropriate. Over all a fun book, and definitely worth a read.
