Paramedic Killer - Medic 7 First Responders Series: The only way two people can keep a secret is if one of them dies (First Responder Fiction Book 2), by Pat Patterson

About the Author Pat sails, runs, mountain bikes, and hikes...He saves lives, and he writes. Like many novelists, he writes about what he knows, and if that includes a little blood and grit, it's because he's been there, on the street with dying people in his arms. At the end of the day he's just a paramedic with a lot of stories to tell. Answering the Call is a collection of short stories written as devotionals to encourage Pat's first responder friends. He writes the Medic 7 series in the hopes that others will understand the pain and sacrifice of those who race towards danger.

The only issue that I had was the occasional over detailed descriptions. I really liked how the story line spread out and then came back together at the end. I wish that the book had spent more time on the culmination of events. I felt that it wrapped everything in up in very short order. I am known to harp on that with many books and many of the very well known authors on the bestseller lists as well. I find the main character a fun cross between a Cussler character and a Clancy character.

First Responders By katrina Epperson Pat Patterson brings us a suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page is turned. This story revolves around paramedic, Jim Stockbridge, from Core Creek, North Carolina.6 years ago his unit respond to a horrific head on crash and being the first on the scene he knew he should wait for heavy rescue ( a firefighter with specialized equipment ), but his training propelled him to try to help anyway. He assessed the first vehicle and realized it was to late to help the three occupants. At the other vehicle there was a lot of confusion as family members are trying to extricate other family from the carnage. With the smell of gas permeating the air everyone knew it was only a matter of time until an explosion. Of course no one foresaw how the explosion would rock their small tight knit community.Fast forward 6 years and Jim is still working as a paramedic on East Beach in North Carolina. He's been dealing with depression, but also a lot of anger since the death of his best friend 6 months ago. The next 24 hours will be very intense for him and show the true make of the man.Called to respond to shots fired with casualty on Reservoir Street, the scariest place in town. The victim he and his partner found was unfortunately his ex partner and fellow paramedic who had very grave wounds. While trying to package him for transport two masked figures step out of the shadows armed and suddenly he's fighting for his very life. This is a fast paced story packed with lots of action and suspense. It showcases a paramedics job and the fact that they never know what they are facing when they leave on a call. The author brings strong, well developed characters and a plot that will keep you guessing until the last page is turned.Pat Patterson is a new author for me, but not for long. This story has an intriguing title and cover. I really enjoyed this book.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense.I received this book from the Publisher for a honest review without bias or outside influence. I was not required to write a positive review.

When you are out saving people on the street, saving yourself shouldn't have to be a thought. What is going on? Non-stop action will keep you guessing in this thriller. This book is hard to put down once you get started. I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.

Two years previously, in a book titled Smoky Bacon Crisps: Finding the Edge of Life, three men in their sixties, Roy Fox, Donnie Anderson and Henry Doncaster, challenged the social order of the nation by taking a stand against an errant authority. They fight pervasive terrorism legislation and the illicit force of law to take their case to the people, resulting in The Pensioners’ March on Glasgow. In the present book the three men are drawn into something much darker. Their elderly friend, Sidney Plunkett, had been CEO of three multinationals and in the early nineties he was one of the first to see the potential that was to become the World Wide Web. Now, at eighty-six years of age, he lives in a home for the elderly. His hobby is hacking and he delights in directing networks that breech the security of the MI5, SIS, CIA and NSA websites. But surely what he is uncovering cannot be true? Surely the recent terrorist incidents: the bombs in a hospital and the destructive sabotage of a nuclear reactor, were not orchestrated from within the British Establishment? He detects a secret organisation, Erebus, which gets its funding from various government departments. Erebus appears to be connected to an infamous university club whose members include the Prime Minister. Sidney’s friends Henry, Roy and Donnie try to help, but who will believe them in the face of a government that is intent on racking up the terror agenda. Almost daily television pronouncements by the Prime Minister stoke up a terrorist fearing reality for the British public, even labelling Roy, Donnie and Henry as terrorists and putting a price on their heads. As the three go on the run in beautiful parts of the northwest coast of Scotland they are chased by special forces agents in scenes reminiscent of Buchan’s Thirty Nine Steps. Yet the fugitives also have help from a disparate collection of ‘dissidents’, including bar manager friends, Maureen and Rosie; Nadira Khan, Oxford Don and Master of the Bench of Middle Temple; Glasgow gangster ‘Finn’ and his bodyguard, Adonis; and London gang leader Calvin Campbell who runs Newham. Other ‘insurgents’ include computer experts Mohsin and Amjad, as well as the kilt-wearing Moroccan chef Hamza Hassan, not to mention the Russian dive boat skipper, Dmitry Kovalev who falls foul of the sadistic torturer, Major Roger Winchester. Flora Campbell from Gairloch, not unlike her namesake Flora MacDonald, also plays her part, as does the community of Knoydart, north of Mallaig. Throughout Britain many others try to help, only to be thwarted by little known legislation such as the Civil Contingencies Act, akin to the USA’s ‘Patriot Act’, and equally adept at closing down ‘terrorist supporting’ newspapers as well as silencing traitorous policemen, including the enigmatic Chief Inspector Aldo Perretti. We will not disclose the plot, but mention must be given to some of the superheroes of the unfolding story, such as Lord Glendinning of Dougalston, Astraea the mysterious Goddess of Purity, and…a cuckoo.

Shadow State, by Dave Mearns

About the Author In his working life as a British university professor Dave Mearns authored seven books in the area of psychotherapy. With sales approaching half a million copies and translations into twelve languages, his work is popular because he was able to bring out the humanity of the therapeutic relationship and the ways in which people struggled to escape from the life experiences, such as emotional abuse and trauma, that had imprisoned them. He has taken that same feel for the people and their development into two novels, Smoky Bacon Crisps: Finding the Edge of Life and Shadow State. An unusual feature of these books is that they are Action/Adventure novels where the three central characters are so-called ‘senior citizens’. Perhaps it is about time that literary fiction provided action hero models for their ‘senior’ readers! These are heroes who do not drift quietly towards old age but decide to take a stand against the abuses of political authority. Dave lives in a cottage in Scotland with his wife, Elke. Much of their time is devoted to touring the Scottish highlands in their motorhome and taking advantage of the Scottish ‘right to roam’ legislation that encourages trekking in any of its wilderness areas. They also find many reasons to visit their daughters and granddaughters in Surrey and Holland as well as following the fascinating current development of Scottish politics.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exciting suspense novel By Charles J. Oleary This exciting suspense novel shows three friends discovering a massive plot by a shadow government to create terrorist events in order to increase government control. After hospital and nuclear facilities are bombed, three elderly men, falsely accused, go on the run throughout Great Britain. Each has particular talents, as well as weaknesses, but all possess the kind of decency that attracts friendship and aid from ordinary and highly placed folks as well as very likeable criminals. Written with humor and rich description of adventures on sea, on trains, on mountains, prisons, pubs and city streets an ingenious plot unfolds that keeps the reader worried and engaged. I liked the impossible odds the heroes faced, the surprising ways they managed to keep going and, most of all, the many odd human meetings that outsmarted the very clever and very respectable villains.

After reading Smoky Bacon Crisps by the same author, I was happy to reconnect with its main characters: Roy, Henry and Donnie. In this story, these elderly men get involved in an exciting thriller escaping from British secret service throughout the most varied Scottish landscapes. The plot is captivating. And it beautifully describes the friendship between courageous, openminded, and sensitive folks. What I liked best though are its dialogues, which I think express Scottish wit at its best. I strongly recommend this novel.

Secrets Of The Serpent's Heart: Arkana Mysteries #6, by N S Wikarski

Review UNANIMOUS PRAISE FROM INDIE BOOK REVIEWERS: I was completely swept away... this is SO different from anything I've read, and I loved it! Ms. Wikarski has a natural gift for creating a haunting suspense, dynamic characters, and then throwing in some history and mystery for good measure... Makes me want to start the series from the beginning, and if the other books are even half as good as this one I know I'm in for a real treat! Recommend this one for fans of mystery/adventure who'd like a new twist. (Sherri Warner)I loved the creative and strong characters and interweaving sub-plots that continued to build and shock and surprise. Just when you think you know what's happening, something comes along to throw a wrench in it... I've read a ton of thrillers and mysteries over the years so I'm rarely surprised by anything anymore but I can say that this author managed to do it. I appreciated the brisk pace and the descriptive details that really brought the story to life - world building is absolutely crucial in 'selling' a story and it is done quite nicely here. (Laura Clarke) I didn't want to put it back down until I'd finished the whole thing! First off, this book was just so much "bigger" than I'd expected it to be, in terms of characters, overarching plots, times lines, character POV's, worldview and the different cultures and the history, etc... Took me by surprise, but in a good way!.. I like that Ms. Wikarski doesn't stick to the same old beaten-to-death tropes but instead carves her own path that we are eager follow down. Recommend for fans of historical/adventure thrillers. (Brenda Maxwell) This book was amazing!... one of the most just flat out interesting novels I've read in a long time... the writing was stellar. The strong word choice and fluid prose makes it a very easy book to sink into... It just felt more "intelligent" than a lot of books (like maybe I learned something), but was very easy to read at the same time. (Steph Coleman) It felt unique and unpredictable, always a nice experience, especially in a genre that is fraught with copycats. If you like mystery, suspense, and some global flavor, this is a great book for you. (Tabitha Parks) "Secrets of the Serpent's Heart" by N.S. Wikarski was awesome! I haven't read anything like that in a long time, if ever... it all came together to create a fresh-feeling novel that was out of the ordinary and kept me hooked throughout. (Essie Harmon)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great installment By Roger A Ward N.S. Wikarski has done it again. The latest installment in The Arkana Series is the best yet, filled with griping and suspenseful plot twists and a treasure trove of archaeological, historical and anthropological information.Every story line in the series gets its fair share of time and plot twists. Each of the major characters is spotlighted—plus, we are introduced to two new characters who not only advance the action, but whose talents, knowledge and eccentricities seem to ensure their characters have even more to contribute in the seventh and final volume of the series.By the end of _Secrets Of The Serpent's Heart_ the Arkana and the Blessed Nephilim are poised for a final showdown. All of which ratchet up the delicious agony that is waiting until December of 2016 to find out how the story ends. The only drawback is waiting another 363 days for the final volume to be available to read.

Scales This is book 6 of a proposed 7 book series, and extends the Arkana team's search for clues leading to the "Sage Stone". Exotic locations, cryptic clues, and constant interference by the Nephilim, a group of religious zealots, have been the hallmarks of the first five books in this series. Book 6 does not disappoint, and the author continues to develop the thought processes of both the antagonists and protagonists in their quest for the final relic, The Sage Stone. There are a lot of twists and turns, and even a couple of surprises. SECRETS OF THE SERPENT'S HEART rates a solid 4.5 stars, but book 7 will not be out until December, 2016. I may have to reread the whole series to get back up to speed for book 7.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another good one! I like how the author writes so ... By Laurie Another good one! I like how the author writes so that even with a year in between the books you feel like you are back with old friends ready to go on another adventure. I won't say more about the ins and outs with the characters as I would need to post a "spoiler" alert. It was well done. The search was a bit easier this time and that was okay. They needed that. The history was great and new characters added to the suspense. Even if you have not read the first five you can read this one and get the story and eagerly await #7!

A good first book with fresh tech ideas and an interesting future landscape By Catherine Mackay Kodiak: Infinity Verge 1 is a fairly good book, but the writing is somewhat uneven with a tendency to sway too much to the melodramatic. The main character, Abel Cain is almost borderline unpleasant - while I like my characters to have flaws, too many leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth, so to speak. For me, Cain's temper tantrums and out-bursts just make me roll my eyes and think: 'there is nothing about this character I like.' Then to, the main female lead, Echo Shade (love the name) refers to Cain as 'boy' which is a bit rich since he is a good ten years or more older than her and makes her sound condescending. Then to, the story does somewhat suffer from uneven pacing which slows the story - the author keeps back tracking into the past and I have to say I sometimes lost the thread of the story in 'real time'. Morand also has a tendency to use words out of context, for example he uses the word 'hiraeth' which has no english equivalent; I had to go on the internet to find out if it was an actual word. Wikipedia cites the word as Welsh and generally thought as perhaps meaning homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed in relation to nostalgic feelings for the Wales of old. The author uses the word hiraeth to encapsulate Cain's feelings as he is trying to do CPR on Echo after retrieving her pod from space - not really anything to do with nostalgic feelings for the Wales of old? Ok, now that my gripes are out, overall the author has some fresh ideas around the technology of the future and it is an integral part of the back-drop of the story. The story's bones are good and over time I think the author will create exceptional stories. A big shout out to the author for pulling together a reasonably good first book - your courage to put your stories out there for the public to review and critique - kudos to you, man!

The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American novelist Jack London about a literary critic, survivor of an ocean collision, who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediately sold out before publication on the strength of London’s previous The Call of the Wild. Ambrose Bierce wrote, ”The great thing—and it is among the greatest of things—is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen... the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime... The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieties, is awful.” Like The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf tells the story of a soft, domesticated protagonist, in this novel’s case an intellectual man named Humphrey van Weyden, forced to become tough and self-reliant by exposure to cruelty and brutality. The story starts with him aboard a San Francisco ferry, called Martinez, which collides with another ship in the fog and sinks. He is set adrift in the Bay, eventually being picked up by Wolf Larsen. Larsen is the captain of a seal-hunting schooner, the Ghost. Brutal and cynical, yet also highly intelligent and intellectual (though highly biased in his opinions, as he was self-taught), he rules over his ship and terrorizes the crew with the aid of his exceptionally great physical strength. Van Weyden adequately describes him as an individualist, hedonist, and materialist. Larsen does not believe in the immortality of the soul, he finds no meaning in his life save for survival and pleasure and has come to despise all human life and deny its value. Being interested in someone capable of intellectual disputes, he somewhat takes care of Van Weyden, whom he calls ‘Hump’, while forcing him to become a cabin boy, do menial work, and learn to fight to protect himself from a brutal crew.

From the Inside Flap A thrilling epic of a sea voyage and a complex novel of ideas, The Sea-Wolf is a standard-bearer of its genre. It is the vivid story of a gentleman scholar, Humphrey Van Weyden, who is rescued by a seal-hunting schooner after a ferryboat accident in San Francisco Bay. London uses Van Weyden's ordeal at the hands of a schooner's devious crew to explore powerful themes of ambition, courage, and the innate will to survive. The Sea-Wolf also introduces Jack London's most memorable, fully realized character, Wolf Larsen, the schooner's brutal captain, who ruthlessly crushes anyone standing in his way. As Gary Kinder states in his Introduction, "Wolf Larsen is one of the most carefully carved characters in American literature....London, himself, seems as fascinated as the reader with his own creation."

This is one of them. It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming. Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down. It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

47 of 52 people found the following review helpful. A philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure. By Dave Schwinghammer When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew. Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally. The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult. Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage. I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

I had never read Jack London before but after visiting his burnt down estate in Northern California I became interested in his writing. This book is excellent, entertaining and fast paced. The kindle edition seems not to be missing any pages. Great Free Download.
