In this fast-paced, action-packed, historical novel on the early campaigns of the American Revolution, history buff and Revolutionary War re-enactor John Koopman tells the stories of the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Harlem Heights from the soldier’s point of view. Koopman skillfully portrays the crucial maneuvers of the battles while providing insight into the thoughts and emotions of the participants, from the foot soldier to General George Washington himself. The book gives readers a close look at George Washington’s character and his skills as a military strategist, battlefield general, and equestrian. The Washington portrayed here is not the gray-haired figure so familiar to many Americans but a vital, athletic man at the height of his powers. Readers will also learn of Washington’s great affection for horses — his favorite warhorse, Nelson, in particular — and the crucial role horses and horsemanship played in the war. The exploits of three groups of Continental soldiers in Washington’s Army are also featured. The Abbot brothers of Andover, Massachusetts, joined the fight to avenge the death of their older brother, who was killed at the battle of Bunker Hill. Sergeant Justus Bellamy of Cheshire, Connecticut, shows bold leadership to the men of his company and also suffers a great personal loss. Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Knowlton of Ashford, Connecticut, leads his Rangers on dangerous missions. The men who made up the Continental army were not the professional equivalent of their British counterparts, who often referred to the Patriots as Rabble. As Koopman’s story shows, however, they honed their own unique fighting style as they became soldiers. Although George Washington at War — 1776 does not read like a history book, its contents are authenticated by the author’s careful, clearly documented research. Extensive footnotes are provided for those wishing to dig deeper into the period. The book will be an engaging, informative read for both general readers and history buffs.

By SaraK I'm thankful to have been given a paperback copy of this book just prior to the official release. I've been blessed with a four-year friendship with the author, during which time I've seen him ride expertly in reenacted battles (both as Washington and as a private), portray a dignified Washington at a Ball, slog through deep mud to care for his horse in camp during Hurricane Irene, and share a kettle of salted beef around a camp fire on a stormy night on Saratoga Battlefield while he read aloud from a letter that was written by a soldier on that spot in 1777. I mention this to illustrate the fact that the author brings to this book not only his solid research on the American War of Independence, but his own personal experience recreating those moments in time when the history pages disappear and you can imagine what it felt like to be there, in that moment. That experience carries over into the pages of this book. By focusing on specific moments and individuals, the author shares that "in the moment" experience, when you can see yourself setting up fascines on Dorchester Heights, racing beside General Washington as he outrode the British 17th Dragoons, going on a risky reconnaissance mission with Knowlton's rangers, and feeling the despair and then elation of the troops when they force their enemy to withdraw. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope for a second installment.

By Susan A Johnson I typically would not read a book about war, however, I found the book was not only informative but engaging. Many of the details of 18th century terms were well explained. The story line really kept my interest.

By Amazon Customerjerr John KoopmanGeorge Washington at War, 1776A mixture of fact with in-sites gained from an excellent horseman. The author has portrayed George Washington for several years both in reenactments in towns and cities and in several documentaries. In Red Badge of Courage is a depiction of a soldier charging where he explains how time seems to expand. In a like manner of immediacy, when Washington is escaping from his pursuers, you can feel the saddle under you and hear the leather moving. As a history buff myself, I found the visualizing of the varied scenes of battle clearer than if I had been there. The book “Diary of an early American Farm Boy” takes a real diary and expands on it. Hear facts from a pension appeal are laid out as the base and expanded in a like manner while also being original.Recommended reading for history buffs and in particular those that have visited the sites depicted in the book.Jerry Cross
